"Unknown" Yonkers Highlight.

By Weekend W |

For most people outside of Yonkers Untermyer Gardens is an unknown entity. Driving by the tall concrete wall on North Broadway hides all that this wonderful garden has to offer. The spring flowers and the Christmas light display get better every year.

Restoration has been ongoing and slowly but surely its former beauty is coming back to life. The combination of water features and statuary add additional interest to the compound. The summer concert series also is a nice treat!

There are no food stalls or gift shops and that's a good thing. Simply enjoy the seasonal flora and special events as nature intended.

Its worth a ride for the Holiday Lights so put it on your calendar. Free hot chocolate too!

Secret Walled Gardens...possibly haunted

By NoSleepFromBrooklyn |

One step onto these grounds gets your instincts screaming there's a lot of history that's gone down here. Untermyer Gardens is a public park, just 20 minutes north of Manhattan. While parts of the gardens are perfectly manicured, they are surrounded by a crumbling facade. Cross-crossing canals with clean flowing water are surrounded by gorgeous blooming tulips but it all leads to a drained pool with a cracked mosaic bottom, one that even in ruins is quite stunning.

This bizarre and wonderful 40+acre park is nestled on the banks of the Hudson River in Yonkers, right next to Saint John's Riverside Hospital. It's been dubbed as 'American's Greatest Forgotten Garden' and it's easy to see why as it's hidden by a giant wall. These grounds are a real gem for both garden and history lovers. As someone who loves exploring, especially when it involves a touch of spooky, this park truly captured my heart .

Untermyer Gardens was created by Samuel Untermyer with his wife Minnie Untermyer around 1915. With their shared passions for exotic plants and green thumbs their intention was to build the finest garden in the word on their estate. The results were an eclectic mix of ancient Greek and Indo-Persian designs which has been hailed as one of the 'most celebrated gardens in America' during the 1920's. The grounds now belong to the City of Yonkers and are fortunately being restored back to their glory.

The most popular area in the park is the Walled Garden. Inside the walls you see cross-crossing canals symbolizing the four ancient rivers. The quadrants represent the elements: earth, air, fire and water. The flowing canals are lined with rows of flowers and lush landscaping. Facing North, at the end of the Walled Garden, is an open-air amphitheater. It's decorated with two sphinxes on top of marble columns with the amphitheater behind it. The floor of the amphitheater is made up of a gorgeous mosaic.

On the west side of the Walled Garden is a roofless gazebo called Temple of the Sky which is made up of Corinthian columns. This area has fantastic views of a sprawling lawn, the Hudson River and the Palisades. A terrace below the temple leads you to what once was a large reflecting pool, unfortunately it's currently drained and in need of major repairs.

Right next to the amphitheater, heading west towards the Hudson River, is an area called The Vista. This is accessible via an inconspicuous doorway leading out of the Walled Garden which opens to a long descending stairway. The Vista is said to be modeled after the well-known Villa D'Este originally found in Lake Como, Italy. At the bottom of the stairs is the Overlook, which is a circular area flanked by two monolithic ancient Roman Columns.

Another well known area is the Temple of Love. This area is currently under renovation and not accessible to the public. I will definitely be coming back to see this. It looks like a tower built of rocks with a four-columned gazebo on top.

My four year old daughter and I had a great morning exploring these gardens. There were just a few other people there during our visit, which was surprising considering how remarkable these grounds are. When I got home I started doing some research on this park, that's when I came across its spooky history! It's rumored that the Son of Sam's Devil Cave is located in the park and that he used to spend his time there. There are also stories told about occults hanging out on the grounds at night. So, is this garden haunted? I'm not so sure but I wouldn't go there at night. After all, the garden's silence seemed so...loud.

Tips:
The park is free and open to the public, it even has free parking. Hours 7am - sunset daily.

Best time to visit is during the summer when the gardens are in full bloom.

The Temple of Love, which features waterworks that haven't functioned in 75 years, is in the middle of a major renovation with plans for it to be back in working order by late spring 2016.

Visit untermyergardens.org for more information and a full schedule on history and horticulture tours (small fee). The grounds are open year-round for free, self-guided tours.

Samuel Untermyers and Minnie Untermyer are fascinating people. I'm not a history buff but really enjoyed learning about their contributions to society, be sure to google them.

Strollers are allowed but there are areas not accessible via wheels.

There are no food vendors although there are picnic tables if you bring your own food.

Dogs are not allowed.

Restrooms, water fountains & pamphlets with a park map are available at the community center (which is in the parking lot).

Parking: There are two small lots with spaces for about twenty cars next to the community center at Untermyer. In addition, there is street parking along North Broadway which is both metered (coin operated) and unmetered.

I was amazed at how beautiful this place is. Definitely a must see. You have an option to take a guided tour or explore on your own.

Relaxing and Peaceful

By Phil A. Marshall II |

The Untermeyer Garden is a great place to go during a lunch break, if you have time. I frequently grab a sandwich and eat there. They have different sections that provide varying feels and modes, all of which are pleasant.

The view from the Overlook is my favorite. It oversees the Hudson.

Historic Park of Grandeur - Yonkers Hidden Secret

By Gina M |

Untermyer Gardens is Yonkers, hidden secret. Once you enter the Walled Gardens, you are going back in time... perhaps the Great Gatsby days will come to mind. The sculptures, ponds w/ gold fish, along with the amazing plants, trees, & view of the Hudson River & the Palisades will simply take your breathe away! The landscaping changes w/ the Seasons.

Walking on the grounds (outside the Walled Gardens) you will see at first sight the 9/11 Memorial. In the Summer, there is a stage for their FREE Summer Concerts that are held on Saturdays from May - Sept.

To the Right and farther down the path you will come across the Vista Steps. Do not be surprised if you come across the majestic wildlife that make their home at Untermyer. Once you are down the Vista Steps your breathe will be taken away yet again from the view & the Roman Marble columns that make the 'frame.'

The "Temple of Love" is on the opposite of the Gardens. It is directly behind the 9/11 Memorial.
Once there, you get the feeling of being in Lord of the Rings. It transcends to a Fantasy-like atmosphere.

Be even MORE adventurous & go for a hike along the Croton Reserve Trail. You will come across the abandoned Carriage House. Turn OFF that cell phone & just enjoy the sounds of nature.

Make it a point to bring a camera or have your cell phone fully charged because you will not be able to control yourself - you will become an instant 'photo bug!"

ADMISSION:
Is Free, but you can donate for the park's upkeep.

TOURS: Available on either Saturdays or Sundays from Spring to Fall - check online for upcoming events.

PARKING: Is Free but the lot is small. You can park to the left of the parking lot & if that is full, then park on NORTH BROADWAY in front of Untermyer.

OPEN: All year round

PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a playground. There are no swings, etc. Also, NO DOGS ALLOWED!

Lovely place and amazing views of the Hudson River

Untermyer's park awesome

By Dukeofearl1553 |

I use to go to this park when I was a kid and there was lots of stories about this place, as a kid stories make it that much more fun. We use to go there at night and walk to the gazebo in the back and I guess they were into Greek Mythology so you could imagine the stories. Where the garden is there was a wall around it with those things with wings overlooking the garden and I kind of remember a sign where it said "wedding photos prohibited" so the story was that people that took their wedding pictures there died a few weeks after, when your kids it made it more interesting. I have to say the place is really pretty if you are around it is nice to go there, you will enjoy it

The Garden of Love

By Stephen F |

I visited these beautiful gardens yesterday with a friend, my second visit, and it's a hidden gem, off the beaten path, and a must see, if you are visiting in the Yonkers area. Admission is free, although donations are accepted. The gardens were built in the 1920's and recently restored. The walled gardens are beautifully landscaped with pools and fountains and statuary, all overlooking the majestic Hudson River.

A Hidden Gem

By debbie t |

Untermyer Gardens is an incredibly beautiful spot overlooking the Hudson. The park has exquisite landscaping and sweeping views of the Hudson River. The park is free and is a spectacular place to walk the grounds and take pictures. I am a lifelong Yonkers resident and for a number of years the park was not open to the public. Now that it is, I have brought my husband and daughters there to see just how beautiful Yonkers can be. If you would like to step into the past, while enjoying the present, this park is the ideal place to visit. You won't be sorry!

So pretty

By Karen M |

We went here on a recommendation of a lady we met in a store in Sleepy Hollow. It was so beautiful. Part of the gardens is under construction but the parts we did see were still really lovely. It was a nice place to stop and take pictures.

Hidden Gem

By Reese_Happywanderer |

I discovered this place by a "happy accident". Located next to the hospital in North Yonkers, Untermyer Gardens is a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle. It's truly magnificent. Great place to read a book, unwind or pack a lunch.

A Jewel in Yonkers

By Elaine H |

Untermeyer Park has undergone a recent facelift. It is a beautiful park with gorgeous views of the Hudson River and the majestic Palisades. Admission is free and it is a restful lovely garden to relax and reflect. Just lovely.

Good for a short visit

By Pavithra M |

This place is hidden within plain sight, right down the street from a bunch of hotels on Executive Boulevard. The kids and I set out not quite sure what we would find, but ended up in this lovely walled garden, reminiscent of an older, more peaceful time. I had to remind myself that it wasn't really that old. The gardens are lovely to walk through and the stairs leading down to a pleasant view of the Hudson are worth the walk. A word of advice if you are with young children, the climb up is likely to be filled with whines. The gardens have a disheveled look, and some additions to prop up columns, which looks tacky. Also the inspiration for this garden is Persian, Indian and Italian - I think the wild look doesn't quite match the design. Nice enough on a cool summer or Spring or Fall day.

One of those places you might never find except for Trip Advisor and/or Atlas Obscura

By 1852house |

I never knew this existed until I chanced upon a listing on the Atlas Obscura website. Beautiful views of the Hudson, amazing stonework and history. When I visited, there was a lot of work going on - so the water features were not operational (except for the Temple of Love waterfall). Places to sit and observe the beauty of the area. Maps are available with information on the history of the gardens as well as the different paths to the gardens. All free, but I believe there is a charge for tours on Sundays--check their website or call for information.

Beautiful

By John K |

This is an amazing place. Its beautiful, quiet and just a lovely place to hangout. Lots of things to see and it is a nice beautiful walk. The views are amazing.

Historic Restoration

By gemswinc |

Before I visited these gardens, I read other reviews. Yes, the garden is small if you are comparing it to other public gardens, but this is an ongoing historic restoration. If you are a fan of gardens, ruins, history, you will enjoy these gardens.. to enhance your appreciation I highly recommend checking their website and taking their tour. It is free, but a donation is requested. That would cure the "it is a small garden" blues. The tour takes 90 minutes and you see the entire property and are privy to their restoration plans as well..

Beautiful hidden treasure in Yonkers

By JudyMetroNYCarea |

A beautiful garden that was once part of a large estate known as Greystone. The original house is gone and the garden is the only remaining part of the estate.

A wonderful group of volunteers help maintain the grounds and they do a wonderful job. We visited here late Fall and there were 4 wedding parties on the grounds taking photos. And if you time it right, beautiful sunsets of on the Hudson.

I believe the offer concerts and other events on the grounds as well.

The one downside is parking. Very limited on the grounds so street parking is the only real option on busy weekends.

No Support Dogs Allowed

By carlobanchelli |

Although in the official site it is clearly written that access to service dogs is allowed, I was denied access even before approaching the entrance with my support dogs.

A woman with abrupt behavior, through the perimeter gate, reached me promptly, ordering me not to try to approach the entrance with the dogs. After showing her the support dog certificate, she confirmed to me with the security guy who had arrived in the meantime, that absolutely no entry is allowed to any support dog. I believe that in this country there is still a very backward mentality, and that it has remained in the 1800's way of thinking.
Externally the walls seem shabby and I gave up visiting the park.

Tucked away gem of Yonkers

By Donavan M |

From the street, the gardens inside a hidden behind brick walls. But take a stroll inside and wow.... you forget there is a hospital and executive park up the road loaded with businesses. Perfect for a break from work or even an afternoon of relaxation.

Hidden Gem

By Des O |

After leaving the hospital/ doctors office I noticed this hidden place in the winter time and made it my business to stop by!. I could just imagine how wonderful it would look during the Summer and Spring time. If you love nature make sure you go and visit. There are even deers that may make an appearance.

Untermyer Park and Gardens: A Unique and Magnificent Treasurer in Northwest Yonkers

By JODY M |

Crenellated walls and cornered towers surround this beautiful park and gardens on North Broadway. The Greek goddess, Artemis, goddess of the hunt, welcomes visitors into the Persian Walled Garden featuring four intersecting canals, on a north-south axis, representing the four ancient rivers and the four elements:air, earth, water and fire. An amphitheater at the end on one of the canals is flanked by two sphinxes set on cipolino marble columns. On the western side of the walled garden is a large Grecian temple and beneath it is the remains of a marble swimming pool. Dorian, Iconian and Corinthian columns and mosaics throughout the garden complement the lushly planted landscape. Benches within vine covered pergolas offer quiet places to read, rest or just enjoy nature and views of the Hudson River and the Palisades. Outside the walled gardens walking trails lead to the cantilevered Temple of Love, the Vista Overlook, a color garden, remains of a large circular fountain and a gatehouse adjacent to the Old Croton Aqueduct trail. At the gate house are two sculptures of a lion and a horse.

The 43 acre property was given to the City of Yonkers in 1948 as a public park. The mission of the Untermyer Park Conservancy is to restore the gardens to their former glory and they were in the 1920s and 1930s.

The park holds free concerts on Saturday evenings during the summer on one of its wide lawns.

Admission and parking is free to the gardens and park. There are public restrooms in the Cola Community Center near the entrance. Guided tours for $10 are offered on Sundays at 11 am and 4 pm. The schedule is on the website.

Lovely Gardens with a view of the Hudson in a setting of Rome. shows through out the spring and summer.

Yonkers Gold Coast of a century ago

By Alan S |

A fantastic devotion by its current caretakers has made Untermeyer Garden a gem on the Hudson. Take the time to explore it as fully as possible. Just up the Road is their neighbor, Alder Manor. The St. John's Hospital between these properties, south of Executive Boulevard, was built on land taken from either estate.

Forgotten GEM of Yonkers

By Emma R |

I think most have forgotten about these beautiful gardens and ruins. We took family photos here and they came out amazing. I would take my wedding photos there.

Beautiful!

By H R |

I had not visited Untermeyer Park in years. The last time I saw it the park was a mess, it looked like Roman ruins. My father suggested visiting last week. It is gorgeous! We spent about two hours walking around and enjoyed a lovely afternoon.

The Gardens

By Antoinette J |

We've visited in the Summer and it was beautiful. There was a wedding party having photos taken and a mother to be also posing for photos in the gardens. Very scenic and peaceful. During Christmas season the gardens are decorated with lights and there's hot beverages are available. It is worth a visit.

Untermyer -The Great Gardens Melting Hearts

By TMarshay |

UNTERMYER GARDENS CONSERVANCY…is a unique, tranquil and absolutely breathtaking garden to visit. It is worth the journey whether by car or train. Only about 55mins from NYC depending on your location and 1hr30-45mins via train.
If you drive, it’s best to head out early to get parking on property. If you take the train, it is about 26-30mins trek from the Greystone Station. Either way in order to enjoy the vast landscape I would recommend going from it opens that way you will capture the beauty around without many people in the background.

That being said UGC “Samuel Untermyer’s gardens in Yonkers, New York. Untermyer Park and Gardens is a City of Yonkers public park. He transformed the gardens and greenhouses into some of the most celebrated gardens in America. “

There are so many gardens/designated areas to wonder off into and enjoy nature at it ms best such as : WALLED GARDEN, THE VISTA, COLOR GARDENS, VEGETABLE GARDENS, RUIN GARDEN, TEMPLE OF LOVE to name a few.

During my trip there I was fortunate to meet a Yonkers local who shared a wealth of information re the property and advised me how to get to the cascading waterfalls by the temple of love. A must see when you visit. This trip was just to check it out… and take pictures but I will be back to enjoy the gardens to the fullest. There are designated areas for picnics. It also seems to be a popular location for newly weds. Prior Permission has to be received for professional photography, but leisure photography is permitted.

I have pinned this place as one of my new favorites to just relax and become one with nature. Check out their website for more details and their concert series.

A TMarshay endorsed location ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Hidden Jewel

By ShannonLeeGilstad |

Untermyer Park is not the type of place that draws big crowds. And you'll find that's just how you'll like it.

The park is a mix of a botanical garden, wooded trails, Greek/Roman architecture, and a colorful, albeit spooky, history. If you are a Yonkers or Hastings person or just a regular on the 6 bus, you've probably driven past here a million times and just assumed it was some kind of summer camp or daycare for kids because of the typical parks-style building that leads to the main property.

Walk a bit down the hill or to the right and you're met with what looks like a walled fortress. Inside there's a goldfish pond (well, more of a cross-shaped fountain), an amphitheater that looks like it's out of ancient Greece, flowers (while they're in season), and steps leading down to sweeping Hudson River views.

The story of the property starts with a wealthy Samuel Untermyer, who's home was on the site of the current park. Scars and relics of what once was, including crumbling columns and an abandoned relics, and an but forgotten gatehouse complete with lions adorning it. It's a really interesting place on so many levels. Anybody I've ever taken always wanted to return.

If you decide to go (and you will), I'd suggest a car as getting there, especially on weekends and if you're not a great walker, can be a bitty tricky if you're not from the area. Bringing a camera is a must and in fair weather you can bet that you'll see at least one wedding procession taking photos on the grounds (that can be beautiful to see on its own.) If you are a hiker (and have good balance), I suggest walking down the hill and milling around the trails, which are remnants of the Old Croton Aqueduct, just to see what you'll find (you'll often find yourself staring face to face with deer on the property.)

Hidden piece of history

By SmartAudreyM |

I suggest reading a little about this property before visiting. The gardens at their prime must have been jaw-dropping. The sections that are left are still unbelievable. Strap on your hiking shoes and really explore the park. If you can get down to "lion's gate" you will discover a cousin of the New York City Library lions. This park also connects to the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail which follows the hudson up from Central Park.

Fantastic outdoor space

By ML01001 |

Stunning gardens, lovely stroll, and free!
I am not even sure what else to say… this once-private property is a masterwork of garden design. The walled garden was my favorite, but the entire area is full of beauty and views that don’t stop.

Take a lovely stroll, let your imagination roam

By Suzanne_W34_13 |

A worth while place to visit..especially when the flowers are in bloom...one can just imagine the lavish festivities that took place here..glad the structures and gardens are being taken care of....

really great walk in a park... interesting design and architecture

By barry m |

This is a hidden gem not far from New York City.
Best of all it is free. Be sure to read about the history
of the park and its benefactor. More than adequate parking at
the site and nearby streets. The architecture is a fantasy of Persia
and ancient worlds.

Park and Garden with an excellent Vista!

Excellent Park and Garden with beautiful view of Palisade cliffs and Hudson river! Visited the park for Father's Day outing and had a great time with family. Visit during fall season will also reward with beautiful color of leaves.

Across the street from an office I was visiting. I decided to stop and take a stroll and am so happy I did. The view and grounds were breathe taking. This would be a perfect spot to bring the kiddos or your loved one for a date.

Atypical, serene garden in the Persian style

By bonnileu |

I've stopped here with friends a couple of times after several hours at the NY Botanical Gardens. It's a real 'palate-cleanser' after the bounteous fervor of Everything You Could Wish For in the Bronx. The classic Persian style with its symmetrical water channels are offset by the near over-the-top temples and sphynx on columns. The summer plantings were tropical and lush but they change with the seasons so there's always something new to see. The views overlooking the Hudson are amazing. Can't wait to see further renovations! Plants are thoughtfully labeled.

Jewel on the Hudson

By Navylicious |

I just love visiting gardens around the country and the world. Last week I saw a very beautiful one close to home--Untermyer Gardens on the Hudson in Yonkers, New York.

The gardens are named for Samuel Untermyer, a prominent New York lawyer who had a strong passion for horticulture and beauty.

In 1899 he purchased Greystone (Untermyer), the former estate of New York governor Samuel Tilden, and for the next forty years, with the help of landscape artist Welles Bosworth, he transformed Untermeyer gardens into one of the most celebrated in America.

Today, the gardens has been partially restored by the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy.

It's a stunning place and I encourage you to visit and wander about if you can! And I think it's a perfect backdrop for wedding photos.

Another Hidden Gem of Westchester

By Joe V |

Stunning views of the Hudson River and Jersey Palisades, great hiking trails - eclectic architecture reminiscent of ancient Persian and Greek.
It was under construction when we visited in Nov 2017, and parts could certainly use a face lift, but the abandoned, crumbling buildings in the woods (below the main section) added to the sense of adventure, especially for young kids.

Short drive for lunch afterwards in downtown Yonkers. This is an easy 5 stars!

A bit of Europe in Yonkers...

This is a jewel along Route 9 in Yonkers. It is undergoing restoration and has some beautiful old mosaics in disrepair. The gardens of the main area have been restored and are gorgeous.
A wonderful place to go and enjoy. A music and events calendar is on their web site.

AMAZING! BEAUTIFUL! LIFECHANGING!?!

By kanyesmemepalace |

In short; truly the most difficult place to narrow down into 1 instagram post. I had all of NYC covered in 1 post, but this was harder.

Truly the best place we visited in NY. So much more than I expected. Constantly stunning, everywhere you turn, every path you go down is just amazing. I went there without really knowing what it would be and was just completely blown away. I'm so happy places like this exist. The gardeners do an amazing job, not sure how they keep up with this place but it's phenomenal!! I will not allow anyone I know to skip this on a trip to New York.
"Awe-inspiring. Would not have thought that a garden like that would exist in Yonkers. It felt like it wasn't real." - quote by my partner (who I made come with me and is not particularly a 'gardens person').

Beautiful and free

Don't miss the pathway down the hill with a lovely view of the Hudson. The gardener was very helpful and seemed knowledgeable about various plants there.

Unknown Gem

I’ve lived in Westchester my whole life and never knew this park existed. I’m not sure what that says about me but the important thing is I know it exists now :) What a beautiful, peaceful gem of a park. The flowers, fountains, architectural details and especially the view are all FANTASTIC. Just go, you won’t be disappointed. Pictures taken by me.

A True Urban Oasis

By WFR |

Untermyer is an oasis; a beautiful garden offering peace and tranquility. One feels transported to faraway exotic lands. It has been slowly restored to its past grandeur. I have been visiting often through the years and am happy to say that it only gets better and better.

Hidden gem

By Ange516 |

This is a unique, stunningly beautiful hidden historical garden in Yonkers with a perfect balance of planned and wild parts, open spaces and hidden corners. It's on a slope above the Hudson with beautiful views on the water. No entrance fee is charged and it's open from 8am until sunset. Perfect for picnics, walks, reading a book or just sitting and enjoying the beauty and peace. Apparently not too many people know of it. Friends recommended it to us. They have varied Saturday evening performances throughout the summer. We came for a beautiful open-air ballet performance on a Saturday evening and will be back many times!

Shameful need extensive repairs

By LAFAMILLEG11231 |

What a wonderful place. Too bad Mr. Untermyer handed it over to the City.
He must be rolling in his grave.

Beautiful place. Very unfriendly staff. Guards are very rude and got very close to me when speaking to me.

Hidden treasure in heart of Yonkers

By Crowski1 |

We visited on a whim to this free garden, not quite sure what to expect since no one we know had heard of it. Located right off Broadway, in the shadow of a local hospital, this 42 acre garden is the best kept secret of Yonkers. Compared to the more well-known southern neighbor, Wave Hill, Untermyer Gardens is superior on many fronts. Free of charge, no crowds, sprawling grounds, literal ruins, sweeping views of the Palisades, deer, fountains, rock gardens, hiking paths, formal gardens.....the list goes on and on. I visited with my five year old on Friday and she loved climbing the rocks so much we went back the very next day. Take a few steps away from the parking lot and you'll find it hard to remember that you're still in Yonkers.

Gorgeous vistas for weddings and everyone

By locavoregal |

The Untermyer Gardens is undergoing renovations and is now free to the public, although they require a permit for commercial photography. There were five wedding parties getting their official photos during our visit on a Sunday evening. Stunning vistas on the former estate of Zionist philanthropist and activist Samuel Untermyer. In its heyday in the 1920s and 30s (hailed as "America's Most Spectatcular Garden"), it encompassed 150 acres. While it's now down to 43 acres, the stunning vistas complement the lovely architecture, with Persian, Renaissance, and Roman influences.

Beautiful place not what it once was.

By Paul C |

Untermeyer park is a great Yonkers park. It’s a true park in every sense of the word. It used to be much larger but St. John’s got some of the land. It’s a great place to just walk around with a special person, bring the kids or just go for some alone time.
It’s a Yonkers treasure given to the City by Untermeyer who was a famous lawyer who lived here but worked in NYC.

Most Scenic Park in Westchester

With spectacular Hudson River views, and beautifully maintained gardens and hiking trails, the former estate property in NW Yonkers is now part of the Yonkers parks system. We go there often, and it is one of the best-kept secrets in Westchester.

Beautiful and Serene

By FLBFive |

Weather you spend 30 minutes or 2 hours here, you will enjoy the peaceful setting it has to offer and views of the water. These gardens are free, and don't be surprised when you visit if there are people taking professional photos throughout. If you have trouble walking or with stairs, there will be many areas you won't be able to access. We enjoyed walking down the stairs to view the water and walking the trails around the perimeter.

Just love this place for tranquil ME times. Bring your camera, and your girl or boyfriend. It's a great background.

SENSATIONAL

By Monica C |

This place is beautiful and nature is showing you all of its wonders.
The flowers and the waterfall is tranquil . The path throughout the grounds becomes silent as if you can hears the voices of the plants and trees..

this is a hidden treasure in Westchester--a great place to stroll on a grey morning, and also to walk dogs.

By Laura C |

Recent restoration has removed some of the more mysterious and ruined aspects of this lovely park/estate. But it has been well done and is now a much more generally appealing place to visit. Perfect for a long walk after breakfast or a picnic in the summer with the kids. There are also some summer theater programs here that are fun to attend. Mostly though it is beautiful with great views of the river and lovely more formally arranged garden areas. Best in spring and summer but mysterious in the fog and snow in other months.

Amazing! A must see

By Emilia M |

This park must be the most beautiful I've ever seen. It's clean, very quiet, has like a pond with orange and yellow fish and a mini waterfall. The Hudson view is spectacular! We took a lot of pics but to be honest, they dont show not even half of the beauty. You must see it "live" to be wowed. Is no entrance fee, no parking fee. There are no bars or restaurants around so make sure you take some water/soda (and even some food) with you. The park is huge and you'll be walking! There are restrooms tho :)

This place is being upgraded but is beautiful. The gardens and entire property is nice to walk around.

Came here with a Meetup Group of about 30 people. Loved the views and walk. Highly recommended not really for young children as may not be of interest

Beautiful public park with an auspicious history

By Lindsey M |

A wonderful, almost fantastical place to explore. I love that this garden is free and open to the public. And it was fascinating to learn about the history of the place, and I felt good knowing that Samuel Untermyer was an early anti-fascist, known as "Hitler's bitterest foe."

😍

By llanastefani |

I didn’t realize how close this was to me. Glad I stumbled upon this place on TripAdvisor. Beautiful and relaxing! I loved taking pictures of the scenery. Unfortunately the fountain was being repaired the day I visited but overall I was still very happy to be there. I would go back and visit again!

Hidden Jewel

By diazuc |

I love the water fountain and red flowers. Its not a big garden. It's hidden next to a community center/park. There are limited parking spaces inside the park before walking a few steps to the garden.

Beautiful with great views

By Dobbstraveler |

This used to be a privately owned estate with fabulous gardens overlooking the Hudson River. It has fallen into disrepair but over the last few years it has undergone extensive restoration, with some work obviously still needed. Now open to the public free of charge, it is definitely worth a visit, especially when the weather is good. It is apparently popular as a spot for wedding party photos. While we were there, two different wedding parties were being photographed. We weren't there when the gardens were in full flower, but the autumn leaves were showing off and there were still some flowers blooming. There are various structures worth visiting, including a Temple of Love. There is also a long downhill path with some steps leading down close to the river.

Surprise hidden gem

I was not aware of this garden until recently when our alumni group planned a work project to help cleanup this Garden. What a gorgeous place. You ought to get a group together to go help renovate/revive/preserve this beautiful place is incredible architecture, view, and gardens

Great for wedding pictures

By phyllism258 |

This park sits next to St. John's hospital. While waiting for a sick friend or spending a lot of time at the hospital this park provides a peaceful retreat. They plant beautiful flowers in the spring and summer.

Ideal for wedding pics and family entertainment in the summer

By DENISE C |

Untermeyer Park is a beautiful place filled with amazing architecture, tranquility and history. Who would've known the beauty that lies behind the gates. They hold entertaining family events and concerts during the warmer summer seasons, I enjoy going there to think and take in the scenic views of the Hudson River from the gazebo. I cant wait to request to take my wedding pictures there.

Fantastic...and free!

By Aviron |

I have lived in the area all my life and only discovered it with a random Google search on things to do. What a fabulous and surprising discovery! So many pretty sections and hidden surprises. The waterfalls and the Persian gardens are a particular delight. Picnic grounds, restrooms, parking...what more can you ask for on a sunny summer afternoon?

This is such a great park. You would never believe the landscape that hides behind the tall walls. The views of the Hudson are magnificent. Very quiet. You will not regret visiting this Yonkers rare gem...

Unknown Gem

This beautiful spot is a hidden gem. I took some cousins from Europe there last year and they were speechless. It's beautiful and peaceful.
This past holiday season the park was decorated with lights. It was worth freezing to see it. It was magical.

Nice and free garden

We love gardens and were pleased to learn of this place. It has a beautiful view of the Hudson river and the NJ Palisades. It is meticulous, with few weeds. The Persian influence is very unique.

Ghosts of grand elegance brought back to life

By Ed H |

An historic jewel that was rescued from being forgotten, the gardens are being granted a new life through the painstaking work of the current team. The once-grand vision of a Persian garden are being restored in a loving way. The restoration work has made great progress and each new step is thrilling to see. A must-see glimpse into the glamorous past of the Hudson Valley.

Step Back in Time

By Agnes C |

Untermyer Gardens is a fascinating slice of Yonkers history and a lovely oasis of half wild/half cultivated natural beauty right off busy North Broadway. The formal gardens and koi pools are stunning and a popular site for wedding photos. If you want to explore the rest of the property, wear good walking shoes and be prepared for the unexpected. It's a cross between a walk in the woods and discovering the ruins of the Guilded Age! It's a great way to spend a Spring or Summer day.

Beautifully Serene

By Harriet M |

I so enjoyed my first visit. I arrived when the park opened and basically had the place to myself. It was wonderful with my camera as a companion. The walled garden did not open until 9am so I had 2 hours to explore the other features in the park. That gave me just enough time to arrive at the gardens my 9am. I only spent an hour because they were fixing the canal so no water was flowing. However, they said it should be running by June 20th 2018. I will definitely come back.

Really cool place

By jtimson |

They've been doing alot of renovations and the place looks a lot better. The trails have been cleared from Sandy damage and it seems like new ones have been added.

Hidden Gem

By Shanie J |

A beautiful little gem on the Hudson! It has amazing architecture, style, and is the perfect place for a walk or photography. There are so many wonderful areas in the Gardens. I love this place and highly recommend a visit. You won't be disappointed. The view of the Hudson is amazing. The stairs are exuberant... the history is worth googling. But the beauty is irrefutable...love the waterfall! Garden of love...

A Hidden Gem

By Jim R |

For someone who lives in Virginia but is is Yonkers a few times a year, this was an extremely pleasant surprise. My wife and I (both amateur photographers) visited the gardens early one morning and each took scores of photos of this beautiful, tranquil setting. Well worth a visit.

we visited last Saturday and found the place very relaxing. We can see the fall foliage of the hudson, awesome. the garden itself is very tranquil, good vibes is in the air. Highly recommended to visit and enjoy the scenery and the tranquility this place can offer.

Untemeyer Gardens ---A Delight in Yonkers

By ArtsyGalBaltimore |

An unexpected delight with a European-villa feel and many visitors on a Saturday afternoon, including couples just engaged with a photographer. While undergoing renovation, as a park the walled garden and the vista are worth a visit. Perhaps joining a tour would have further heightened the appreciation. Parking when busy leaves much to be desired.

Secret Garden

By Tracy M |

Wow...what a gorgeous place to spend an hour while my son was interviewing one mile down the road!! Thanks Trip Advisor for pointing me in this direction!!

I parked on the street, unmetered, and walked into the entrance. I was greeted by the grounds keepers, who found me a map and pointed to the best walking path for the time I had.

The entrance was like something I read about in fairytales, like the Secret Garden for adults. Although I just missed the tulips, the greens were lush and the trickling water relaxing. This was just what I needed after a long time behind the wheel.

When you go, wear decent walking shoes- would not recommend flip flops and comfortable clothes. I had fun running up stairs, walking a wooded path, going to the chapel of love (alone haha). I felt complete peace while I was here.

There is a great view of the Hudson, hawks and eagles circling above, the sounds of nature, taking you away to a place that I'm afraid, has not been visited by myself in a long time.

If you looking for peace, or a place to catch up with your friends, bring a blanket to sit on, a picnic lunch, or a bottle of water and your walking shoes, Untermyer Gardens is the place!! I'll post pics later- breathtaking.

Beautiful gardens in Yonkers?? YES.
Be advised that during the pandemic, free, timed tickets are required (easy)
The gardens, sculptures and fountains are to be seen.
One pathway leads to an outstanding view of the Hudson River with the Palisades in the background.
We were disappointed that we were unable to see the mosaics but they are in process of being restored.

Beautiful park and garden. Wedding pictures were done here. I suggest coming with your loved one or family and enjoying a play in the summer time.

Magical place overlooking the Hudson

By luv2travel19941953 |

Still being rescued from decades of neglect, the Untermyer Estate retains its loveliness and some of its magic. Overlooking the Hudson, with stunning views, a really pretty walled garden with Moorish influences, and a lovely path down to the lowest level of the estate, this is an oasis created in another era, once again open to the public. GO. It's only 25 minutes from mid-town Manhattan, close to most towns in Westchester, and makes for a lovely 1-2 hour ramble in a setting that is hard to find anymore near the city.

Beautiful Garden for all seasons

By diazuc |

If you drive fast, you'll miss its location. I love the seclusion and privacy of the gardens. The main water fountain hasn't work in years but you can still appreciate its beautiful tiles. Simple; a beautiful garden.

Off the beaten path.

By Ladybug |

It was open on a Tuesday. Parked and planned to just walk along. What a fun place to discover! Walked on a wood chip path down the hill to the back. There was a huge fence with a small door to go through. Now you’re talking! Flowers, trees, birds! The temple of love has granite steps to the top. A waterfall pours over the edge. Great view. Plus more to explore! A staircase, a Roman pool, a Greek circle of marble columns. The whole hillside down to the river.

Classical beauty

By JogNy |

Untermyer Gardens, the former estate of Samuel Untermyer, is the most beautiful park in Yonkers, perhaps in all of Westchester. It reminds me a little of the grounds of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, Calif., though on a smaller scale. As you stand amid the flowers, overhanging trees and fountains, looking at the Persian-style sphinxes, Greek columns and the Hudson River, it's easy to feel yourself transported to a land of elegant, timeless, classical beauty. You can almost imagine Keats or Shelley reciting here (John Masefield, the poet laureate of England, lived and worked nearby around 1895), or imagine nymphs and satyrs cavorting in the pastoral scene. (OK, I shouldn't get carried away.) Descend the steep steps to get a closer look at the river. In the summer, concerts and the occasional play are presented. There is no better place around for these shows, and even when there's nothing going on, it's a quiet, idyllic spot. If you were to see nothing else in Yonkers, you would be advised to see this. It's on the National Register of Historic Places.

What a gem!

I live an hour away and never heard of this place. So worth the trip if you like nature and flowers. Absolutely beautiful. And free other than leaving a donation.

Beautiful Gardens

By Skater |

The gardens are beautiful with spectacular views of the Hudson, a real oasis in Yonkers. Parking is free! As for directions, use the address on the website. GPS takes you the the Hudson River instead. The Temple of Love is renovated and is spectacular. The Walled Garden is in need of work. The map is at the entrance to the Walled Garden. Get it because many paths do not have signs. Dogs are not allowed. We visited on April 2 and the fountains were not working. The gardens are smaller than I expected and we were done in less than an hour.

An historic garden in restoration!

A must see treasure

By christmas152 |

I am a life long resident of Yonkers and have seen this garden slowly emerge from a dark past but thanks to the dedication of the City and Garden committee it is now a showplace.....It is no longer a tucked away spot for residents - it is a worthy destination for garden lovers from all over......The quiet and beauty are rare in this hectic world.....if you want a picture of anyone, bring them....this is the spot.....every year there are new improvements, all done with an eye both to the past and the future....I have not been here all seasons but am told at Christmas it is out of this world, as well as spring...so.locals, come home and visitors find us! we are worth the time to visit!

Great place to walk of Thanksgiving dinner.
Park is going though a renovation but you can see how its going to be by the work in progress ,The fountains area reminds me of the Taj Mahal.
The rest of the park has some great views of the Hudson river and the overall feel of the countryside right in the city is delightful.I would recommend this 100%

Beautiful and recently restored. In the summer, flowers are awesome. In the winter, the views are spectacular.

A little bit of paradise

By happytraveller914 |

We have lived in southern Westchester for 30 years and never knew this place existed, but a friend found out about it through the Yonkers Historical Society and took us there on a splendid spring day. What a treat! The walled Persian garden is aptly named. It reminded us of the peaceful beautifully-maintained gardens of Shiraz in Iran - especially with the inviting jube of cool water and the many low and sparkly bubbling fountains that welcome you into the space. A real treat that is difficult to find and easy to miss, but well worth looking for. Thank you, Mr. Untermyer. . .

A True Gem

By zionarubin1 |

My first visit to this gem. I wish I knew about this lovely garden! There are amazing views of the Hudson and Palisades. The garden is specially designed to instill peace and appreciation to landscape design.
I’m definitely going back with a picnic bag, book and camera.
I recommend to discover this beautiful gem and read about its creator, Untermyer, who was an outstanding citizen and attorney.

Hidden Gem Along The Hudson

By HelenFla |

Untermeyer Gardens makes for a lovely stop as you wind your way up the Hudson from the Bronx towards the river town of Hastings.

Admission is free, and at 40 something acres, it is an easily walkable feast for the eyes. The fact that it has been only partially restored works in its favor. The beautiful gardens, set among semi-dilapidated but charming Persian architecture truly takes you out of yourself and is a real respite.

There are lovely views of the Hudson and the Palisades beyond, and you are close enough to Hastings-on-Hudson to enjoy the Gardens and grab a tasty lunch.

This park can be something special with the right investment and care. Presently, it is average eat best with signs of decay. Great view of the hudson.

Yonkers business

By Brandon P |

Nice park with many of the plants in bloom. Water features were nice along with the views of the river. Free! I discovered by accident making a wrong turn, when a ask the local office staff many did not know it was there. If you enjoy a walk in the park and have an hour take the time to walk around enjoy the views as well as the monument to the fallen police and firemen. The park is not pristine, a major water feature is broken and looks in disrepair, I choose not to let this ruin the rest of the wonderful views. There was a wedding party taking pictures there and I'm sure they will be great due to the wonderful views.

Gorgeous Gardens!!!

By Linda D |

Everyone should take a stroll here to see the beautiful fountains, gardens and grounds. It really is so lovely and peaceful. We enjoyed a fantastic afternoon here on a sunlit Sunday! A wedding was just starting and it was a perfect day ☀️😊

This place is incredible!

Beautiful views, gardens, sculptures and it's in Yonkers!

By Felecia B |

Easy to find, right on North Broadway and plenty of parking either in the lot or on the street. Free!!! We went a few weeks ago and the gardens weren't in bloom yet, but it was a beautiful February day, 60 degrees and we walked through the park. The view is magnificent of the Palisades and the Hudson River. The stairs down to the lookout point are all stone and the walk along the trail to the Temple of Love was great. The temple in the spring and summer must be gorgeous with the waterfall and flowers so we are definitely going back. The sculptures are amazing - Persian the brochure says but looked Greek to me. Family friendly and a great day trip you can do in a few hours.

Art Deco Style Gardens by the River

By mpiturro |

A trip to Untermeyer Park is always fun and relaxing but the best time to visit is for the July and August summer concerts. Ranging from opera to salsa, symphonic and everything else in between, these free concerts in this beautiful park hugging the Hudson River are a pleasant musical diversion. Come early and prepare to picnic on the lawn because parking is limited. Prepare to park on Broadway and walk several or more blocks to the venue.

Such a wonderful place to visit, totally different from my last visit 30 years ago!

By DS574 |

This is a nice little place to visit and read about. I never knew that Yonkers had such a jewel of a place just a few minutes from my childhood home. Most of the park has been cleaned up and many of the gardens have been reborn. It's a great place to take a walk. There were many dear and rabbits throughout the park. Beautiful views of the Hudson as well.

A Beautiful Spot Overlooking the Hudson

By MaryAnne O |

Untermyer Park is a historic place to visit and admire the beauty of the park which overlooks the Hudson River. It covers about 43 acres filled with flowers, trees, plants, rock gardens and terraces. There is a large Grecian temple and a beautiful waterfall beneath the Temple of Love. “ The Vista” opens to a long staircase leading to the Hudson. It’s a beautiful descend to the Vista Overlook but be prepared to walk back up the long gently sloping staircase. Part of the walled garden is flanked by two sphinxes on top of columns above a pool surrounded by flowers. This is a free park/garden with some parking available or you can find a spot on the street. Donations are accepted which help the to maintain the Gardens Conservatory. Such beauty in the midst of the fourth largest city in New York. Remember NO entrance fee! Opens at 7am to one hour before sunset.

A lovely way spend an afternoon!

By Colleen H |

Well-tended gardens and lovely stonework from another era. Wonderful place for photography. It's mostly quiet, even with groups around. Easy walking and a beautiful sight around every turn.

Hidden gem

By Fshah |

This is a hidden gem that I am so glad we visited. The gardens are gorgeous and have so many different things to see. It doesn’t feel so big that it’s overwhelming, you need maybe 2-4 hours depending on if you’re trying to take a lot of pictures. They also have a small hiking trail there if you’re looking to do something a bit more. I really liked the way they have designed the different areas of the garden and the waterfall is very soothing to watch.

Inside the gardens there is no area to picnic but they have spots where you could sit and hangout. They have a separate picnic area outside of the gardens, the view isn’t the greatest but it’s nice and relaxing and not too crowded. They only have a few picnic tables so make sure to bring your picnic set up so you can sit in the grass.

The earlier you go the better. We got there around 10am and it was only slightly crowded, parking was manageable and there was no traffic to get inside. However, as we left around 1ish, it was very crowded and it was getting a little too congested in the gardens. The parking situation also wasn’t great at this point and there were long lines for cars to get into the garden.

By Ann B |

A combination of a wonderful and beautiful architecture. It's a great place to retreat to. You wouldn't imagine this classical gem to be in Yonkers.

Lovely

By dnvpaul |

The Untermyer Gardens are lovely, but it is a shame that they were allowed to deteriorate. I applaud the society working to restore them. New York lost a gem when it could not maintain the house and grounds. The walled garden has the most magnificent weeping beech trees (at lest that is what I believe them to be). The views to the Hudson River are stunning. I hope in the future the gardens can be further restored.

woow

By Auras S |

the gardens are soo cool and very old, a lot of history, very old Italian tiles and also creepy cult thing(look it up on google). Worth seeing.

Tulip splendor

By bwburnap |

At the end of April I happened to be in the area and decided to check out the gardens. A few weeks previously the beds were all dug up, but to my amazement, I timed it perfectly and feasted my eyes on the beautiful displays of tulips and grape hyacinths! The color combinations were particularly glorious this spring.....I am so proud to have Untermyer Garden in my home town. No need to worry if yo miss the tulips.....the flower displays are changed seasonally so you will be sure to find picture taking opportunities whenever you visit!

Just found out about this place. Went on a Sunday and surprisingly was not too crowded. Lots of interesting buildings and grounds. Will need to go back when things are in bloom and pools are filled. Picnic tables and some nice trails to follow and lots of steps if you want some exercise. Beautiful views of the Hudson and Palisades across the river. Well worth a visit.

This is amazing park with rich history, different trails, beautiful statues, ruins and gardens. Lots of music and arts events happening here. a Must see place when you visit Westchester , NY. Even mr.Lennon been here once...

Persian Design

By NooYoka |

Untermeyer is among the few gardens to incorporate Persian design. Although a sad shell of its former glory, it is a unique site incorporating lavish use of water features and repetitive circular, square and scalloped design elements to create an aesthetically pleasing semi-formal ambiance. Absolutely breathtaking views of the Hudson are visible throughout.

Marco Polo Stufano, the master-gardener and design genius of Wavehill, is involved in this project as well and his genius is visible throughout.

Beautiful

We had to get a permit to photograph here for my wedding a couple weeks ago. It was worth every penny. The gardens and scenery were breathtaking. My photographers were thrilled to be taking pictures here! I have seen a preview of some of the pictures they took that day and they are stunning. You totally forget your in Yonkers. Great time great views if you ever get the chance to go visit and walk around do so.

As you wander thru breathtaking gardens with unique historical architecture, you feel like you're walking in another country. Pond has unique lily pads surrounded by many pretty flowers. Temple of Love is on a hilltop with cascading rock waterfalls with great view of Hudson River. Wonderful walking down descending stone steps to another overlook of Hudson. Along the dirt path you discover huge lion and headless unicorn cement statues. Untermyer Gardens is a photography paradise.

Absolutely beautiful gardens, ponds, structions.

Magnificent Garden Overlooking the Hudson River

By Globe_trotter_100 |

Spectacular beautiful garden, well maintained and just magnificent. And I don't like gardens at all. But this one is very special.

It is a large rambling property in Yonkers overlooking the Hudson River. On a clear day, you can see all the way to New Jersey, There is a famous staircase almost all the way down to the river. If you are in good shape, it is easily doable.

There are many beautiful trees, bushes, and flowers in the garden. If you are visiting New York City and are really into magnificent gardens, this is worth a side trip up to Yonkers. And is free, although they ask for a voluntary donation if you can afford it.

Was likely spectacular in its heyday....

By gojushiho |

But is a bit of an over-rated dump now. We came here during the Christmas holiday to see the gardens in particular. While any garden is not in its fullest glory during winter, this place was disappointing in ways that had nothing to do with plantings or shrubbery. Although being a bit expensive for what it was, the entire place seemed rather unkempt. On our walk, we came across half-full bags of garden debris, a few abandoned rakes and other kind of weird things that suggested that the folks who take care of this place just got up one day and left.

When we finally got to the middle east garden to get some hot chocolate and take some pictures, things got even more absurd. While the garden was alright, the hot chocolate they served was at best a cup of over-priced brown water that didn't taste like much of anything. and the most odd thing of all was a woman wearing a burka at the exit who appeared to be trying to solicit money for completely unknown reasons.

If you look at my other reviews here, you will see that I tend to err on the more generous side of my ratings. But this was downright strange and disappointing. maybe they had a bad day...maybe I had a bad day. Who knows but this was, in my opinion, nothing more than an abandoned garden that is hanging in by a thread and is trying to desperately hold onto what must have been a glorious place at a time a long while ago.

Great place to be!!

Great pictures online with the history but the park wasn't nearly as pretty in person unfortunately. Hard to get around between things on the path so we cut through the wooded areas.

Untermyer Gardens is Very beautiful place

By Lillian H |

Last month, as a photographer with the group a tour of the Untermyer Garden, I loved the garden, especially the stone staircase, the sea view, the memorial, but not enough time. I hope I can come back again next month.

Fantastic Free Find!

By JMS18 |

My 75-year old mother, 11-year old son and I went here yesterday. We thought it was really great, especially for the price (free). It's beautiful, really scenic. My only complaint is that (1) although I saw 2 tour guides, I didn't see anything indicating whether they arrived with their groups or whether they picked up groups on site; and (2) I wanted to make a small donation, and saw no place where I could do that! For a free site, it's really great. You could definitely spend 1.5 hours there.

Untermeyer Gardens is a lovely respite and a hidden gem. Take a book and find a bench, take a walk or watch the sunset. It's glorious in the spring and throughout the summer. It's also a great place for photographers to practice their art with ruins and an abundance of flowers. If you're lucky, you'll also see deer families on the grounds. Add to this, it's free parking and entry!

Outstanding!

Walked the whole grounds- what a treat in the fall. Can’t begin to describe how wonderful this place is. Spent about 2 hours here and would love to come visit again in future.

Great place to visit on a budget

Beautiful place to visit. Very quiet. We really enjoyed visiting here. Pretty views and some wildlife around. We had a great time!

I had no idea this place existed. Was a wonderful place for a picnic overlooking the Hudson. An added bounds was live jazz that day.

Beautiful and FREE

Wife took me here after she found this gem. It is in my backyard and is now part of my walking trails. They have great views and amazing backdrops for pictures, wedding or special event. My wife wants to take professional pictures here for our anniversary.

Like a garden of a villa in Italy

By ginocivale |

Some visitors from Canada were getting bored in our backyard in Yonkers.

In view of the limited time left in their travel and the limited sunlight available before the end of the day, I remembered the beauty of this place right here in Yonkers.

Lovely

By kitty567 |

The history of the place adds spiritual beauty to the physical beauty of the gardens. It is a great place to get away from the rush of the city and spend a few hours (have a picnic) in the surrounding beauty. The flowers blooming around fountain of the walled garden are absolutely gorgeous. THe vista view is incredible. Bring your camera.

From the Gardens' pamphlet:

Samuel Untermyer has left us a garden that truly reflects the diversity of our world.
The fact that Untermyer, wan American born Jew, and his Christian wife, Minnie, built a Persian garden, carries a powerful message. The them of the Garden of Eden, a concept shared by the three Abrahamic religions, stands as a symbol of peace between different cultures.

The Secret Garden

By Giulia C |

I'm almost reluctant to review this place, it is so magical and infrequently used. Formerly the garden of a private estate, it was abandoned, rehabilitated and now offers incredible beauty and peace to its few and fortunate visitors.

Beautifully serene

Untermyer Gardens is beautiful. Its a great place to visit. Whether you'd like to take a quiet walk surrounded by natural beauty or a place to sit in quiet reflection, I strongly recommend a visit to Untermyer Gardens.

My Photo Shoot

By Chrissy |

Did a photoshoot here with my photographer friend. It was the dead of winter and I was freezing but the backdrop was so beautiful that I had to tough it out. This is the perfect place to take photos for your wedding, shower, etc. it overlooks the Hudson River, has a beautiful garden of flowers and even a gazebo. I believe for a big photoshoot you have to get a permit which is about $100 and make a reservation. I went in the Winter when no one else was there so I didn't have to but I believe Summer is probably their busy time.

Beauty at its best

By Tralel |

If you need a place to get away and contemplate life by yourself or with someone you love, this is the place to go! With absolutely spectacular, and well tended, gardens and wonderful fountains this is one of Yonkers treasures.

Located high above the Hidson river if offers stunning views of the river and the Palisades.

A must visit Hudson valley wonder!!!

Photos, Concerts and the Son of Sam

By astchick |

We have lived in Yonkers all our lives so we used to sneak into Untermeyer as teens at night and look for signs of satanic worship. The stories were that the Son of Sam and other cults participated in some rituals here. Fast forward ten to fifteen year when it came time for a location for our wedding photos, we chose to come here. Its absolutely beautiful during the day. The gardens are themed and change from year to year. The history is pretty fascinating and once you get behind the wall you forget you are in Yonkers NY. They host summer concerts here in the evenings in July and perhaps August. Though we have never been, we have heard great things. Parking is free and pretty ample. Wear your sneakers and explore!

Nice garden

By Cèsar L |

No flowers, but still beautiful! Nice Yonkers landmark. Good for wedding pictures once the garden is in full bloom. Fun for the nature lovers

i love this place....a little hidden gem......and in the summer the gardens are magnificent......a lovely place to stroll before the evenings performance of free cultural events...

Beautiful NY Experience

By tda1990 |

A staycation brought me to a gem in my own backyard. There is an antiquated feel to the park and the grounds make you feel like you have gone back to a royal time in NY. It is a little haunting which is nice as well. There is a lot of walking and many hills - be sure to have comfortable gear on. The day we went, luckily it was an overcast rainy day and so it was not packed with people and that allowed us opportunities to sit down on the few benches throughout.
We took seemingly hundreds of pictures. These grounds look like the perfect wedding location or renewal location. They offer a pamphlet with a cool map and information of the grounds. We drove but I think Metronorth and the Yonkers bus are nearby.
I will return.

A Hidden Gem

By Abhilash M |

Right on North Broadway, next to St. John's Hospital lies the Untermeyer gardens. For years I did not know where it was, only seeing pictures of the garden online and in my friends photo albums. Finding this place is real easy and if you are coming in car. there is parking available. There is halal food truck right outside the park. An ideal trip would be to get here before 6:20pm, get food for the truck and go enjoy the garden before it closes!

Peaceful and Lovely

By Vinny46 |

This is indeed a serence and beautiful place. It is great to see what was a ruin restored. The other reviews describe so I will not repeat. However, all that is here is the garden and it does not take very much time to see it all. There are no other facilities, not even open restrooms, at least as of this past May. I would think small children are likely to have little patience with the gardens. That said, Untermeyer is lovely and most people will find it well worth the detour if in the vicinity, and for those into restored gardens, it is probably worth a much longer journey.

This park is excellent!

By Lori P |

I went with a group of photographers and what a wonderful experience I had. The gardens are vast and beautiful the architecture was spectacular. I highly recommend this wonderful place. Bring your kids, your family and enjoy this wonderful park!

A nice garden

By WTan |

It's a very nice well maintained garden. It's a popular place for wedding photos. When we were there, few couples/studios were taking wedding photos there. Great view to the Hudson river. If you go with kids, don't let them run/sit on the grass, otherwise, security will come over. No food or drink allowed either, even there wasn't any sign. But It's free and donation type admission.

Beautiful....It will stun you

By Sheri M |

This is a place people do not even realize exists. Take the time to visit this local attraction and admire the gardeners beautiful talent. It is so worth the time.

Don't Forget the Gazebo

By DONNY S |

And it's free. On a weekday afternoon not very busy except for the police reception that was setting up on one of the terraces. Parking could be a problem though. Well maintained gardens but not much in bloom. Did go down one trail to see the Temple of Love gazebo. Beautiful views of the Hudson river. Lovely, peaceful park to spend hours walking, sitting and reading. Just go and enjoy.

Spectacular Hudson River Views

By Barbara A |

Today was a perfect day to see the gardens . A wedding party was taking pictures...everyone was , it was so perfect. The fountains were splashing, the koi were swimming, the sun was shining, and the birds were chirping . The view of the Hudson was spectacular ...go there...you will love it any season of the year

Nice relaxing walk

By Brandon P |

My wife stumbled across this place and I'm glad see did. The gardens offer nice views of the gardens and the river. I'm not saying that there is nothing wrong, there are some places that look run down but I did not feel that it took away from the beauty of the park. If you go take time to see the memorial for fallen first responders of and in Yonkers. This was a place that many of the people that worked in Yonkers did not even know was here. If you have an hour or two take time to stroll the grounds and enjoy the views.

Scenic Park

By et11482 |

This park is absolutely beautiful and excellent for picture taking due to all of the stunning views. Only downside is that there are not many activities for children such as swings slides etc. Perfect for walks, running, picture taking (weddings and large events require a permit from the City of Yonkers I believe), and sun bathing.

Best Kept Secret

By Mauricio R |

This park is amazing and photos do not do it justice. Its not very known and it is really a magical place. There's the main gardens, then there's a waterfall section, and some fantastic views of the Hudson. If you need a cheap date make it a picnic. There's also some poke stops if you're into that sort of thing. Please note that there is quite a bit of walking and I wouldn't recommend if you can't walk more than 15 minutes at a clip.

Relaxing

By Paloma B |

Last summer someone recommend me to go to untermyer park and i didnt know that i would fall in love with this place. Since then when the weather is warm i buy some food and go with my girls to have a picnic! , beautiful flowers! Water fountains and very quiet. If you want a professional photo shoot thats the place to go!

Excellent revitalization of the gardens

By lawtonjl2002 |

I was staying nearby and decided to walk to the park. I was able to discover all the features in about an hour and half. The revitalization is still in progress but what has been completed is stunning and visually pleasing.

Paradise in Yonkers New York

By Peter |

I have visited many gardens and conservatories without the world. Untermyer Gardens is truly a gem! There are few other examples of Persian gardens within US borders. It gives me great pleasure to see the restoration projects (which are epic) to return this oasis to it's past glory. In fact, the staff has the good taste and appreciation to improve the beautiful garden areas while respecting the architectural marvels through out this site.
If you want a unique garden experience, see something new and old, and the intention & dedication of the garden staff, you must see Untermyer Gardens. I guarantee that it worth a visit!!! Guaranteed!

Wow what a great place to visit.

By Dante-Donna |

Wow, what a great place to spend some time in Yonkers, NY. beautiful gardens and water ponds. walkways and flowers to beat the band. stop by and enjoy nature , you will not be sorry

Beautiful place, but closed early without warning.

By chins01 |

This place is beautiful but we did not get any time to enjoy it. We requested a ticket for the 3:30 - 4 pm time slot. The website said they closed at 6pm, as did our ticket. We arrived just before 4pm and were told the gardens were closing at 4:30p.m. We drove over an hour to get to these gardens and would have requested an earlier timed entry had we known they were closing early for a ticketed outdoor concert. This was a planned early closing so there's really no excuse for not letting people know. The gardens should not have even offer a time entry at 4pm if they were closing at 4:30p.m.. Once we got inside the gardens were crowded with people doing photoshoots so it was hard to navigate without getting in the way. The views inside the garden were beautiful but we were only inside a few minutes when the staff started rushing everyone to head towards the exits. If you come here maybe try a weekday or a morning instead. If you're coming from a distance definitely call ahead to make sure the hours on your ticket are accurate.

We ended up walking the Croton Aqueduct Trail instead as there was an entrance nearby. It's not as pretty but was accessible and a very pleasant, long walk.

Bizarre Remnant of a Once Grand Estate

By John K |

The Untermeyer Estate is long, long gone, but what remains are the sprawling gardens. Fallen into decayed ruins, the gardens have been (and continue to be) lovingly restored by conservators and a phalanx of volunteers, and their work is glorious. "Temples," pathways, winding staircases up and down various terraces, all overlooking the beautiful Hudson River. The spectacular Persian Garden is a sight to behold and truly transportive to a different time and culture that held Untermeyer in its thrall. Spring and summer are the best times to visit, when the blooms are out and the fountains are functioning. But, really, anytime is worth a visit just to catch a glimpse of the long lost Gilded Age of New York. There are always friendly and knowledgeable docents present to answer any questions. For a peaceful, contemplative visit that is far from the madding crowd.

Beautiful

I've been different times of the year and best in the summer and fall. Free entry a must see if you are in the area. Hidden treasure for sure.

Often Overlooked Gem

By APerlman |

Untermyer Garden combines the ruins of what was with the flowering of what will be. This garden certainly isn't (yet) up to the standards of Wave Hill to the south, it is in gritty Yonkers not well heeled Riverdale, but where else are you going to find a walled Persian Garden with Corinthian columns, decorative canals, fountains and mosiacs? And, unlike Wave Hill, it is free! (look for free admission at Wave Hill sponsored by Target) The once grand gardens had fallen into ruin but in recent years they have been restored and are now beautiful again. Once you've experienced the garden, stroll down the promenade to a lovely overlook with views of the Hudson framed by real Roman columns. Climb up the Temple of Love for more views and be sure to check out the remains of the grotto underneath. The long sinuous carriage road brings you down to the Croton Aqueduct Trail. There, you will find the remains of the grand gatehouse with two lions in relief guarding the entrance. The graffiti testifies to the hard times suffered over the years but the new fence is testament to the dedication of the volunteers and employees who are working so hard to restore Untermyer.

Interesting nearby place to visit.....

By SandF2012 |

It was a beautiful Friday afternoon in the beginning of August so we decided to visit the Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers NY; which were recommended by some friends. The entrance to the gardens is on North Broadway and you could miss it if you’re not observant. There is no charge to enter the gardens or to park so we drove in and found a parking place immediately. (The lot on the right is small and there’s room for about 12 cars.) After parking we walked past the community center and went directly to the walled (Persian) gardens. The gardens are magnificent. There are many varieties of large beautiful plants with many fountains, columns and mosaics. Unfortunately some of the mosaics are in need of repair; perhaps because of a severe winter? Towards the back left side of the gardens is a long walkway down to the vista outlook which provides a good view of the Hudson River. Finally after leaving the walled garden we went back to the community center and walked over to the Temple of Love.

If you have some time, the gardens are an interesting place to visit, go during the week, bring your camera and get there a few hours before sunset. Take your time and wear comfortable shoes.

A Jewel in Yonkers is Being Polished

By EasyTraveller12345 |

One of the many surprises in Yonkers is the wonderful Untermyer Gardens located on North Broadway. With great views of the Hudson and the Palisades, the Gardens have a distinguished historical pedigree, but years of neglect were taking their toll. Happily, a conservancy and an enlightened city administration are finding ways to restore the gardens. Although more remains to be done, there has been much progress, and a visit is a treat. Open seven days a week, there is no admission charge and parking is available Definitely worth a visit..

Hidden Gem in Westchester

By pancakesisters9 |

After living nearby for over 25 years, it was a wonderful surprise to finally visit this lovely site. The walled Persian Garden is stunning and peaceful. But the Grotto and the Temple of Love are wonderful in a very different way. Wherever you go, there's wonderful plants to see. It's free, with contribution recommended. Add this to your bucket list.

At the holidays, the Garden is open in the evenings for a completely different experience.

The Conservancy has made great strides in rebuilding and replanting this large property with stunning views and an amazing range of spaces to experience. They deserve continued support and volunteer efforts.

This urban oasis is a wonderful place to visit, relax, and enjoy a beautiful cultivated garden along with great Hudson views. The flower beds were beautiful but the huge, unusual trees are breathtaking. We would love to come back at different seasons to see the variety of flowers and tree blooms. Comfortable to walk through for 30 minutes or relax for much longer.

Greg & Kat’s Untermeyer Garden Experience.

By Greg Harris |

he Untermeyer Park & Gardens is an absolute gorgeous and stunning attraction based in Yonkers, New York.

The garden was designed by architect, William W. Bosworth, and built and developed in 1916, by Samuel Untermeyer, a prominent attorney and civic leader.

Today, the garden is open to the public and hosts many cultural and social events.

In December of 2021, I brought my wife and myself to the garden to view and take pictures of the Grand Holiday Illumination, which first began in 2015, and has now become an annual holiday attraction in Yonkers, New York.

The Grand Holiday Illumination features hundreds of thousands of well decorated lights, a beautiful Christmas tree, and the playing of classic and timeless Christmas music.

In addition to the beauty that’s displayed at the Grand Holiday Illumination, my wife and I enjoy munching down on the complimentary cookies and hot delicious chocolate that is provided by the community volunteers.

During the holiday season, both my wife and I highly recommend for everyone to visit the Grand Holiday Illumination at the Untermeyer Park & Garden to explore and sightsee the amazing Christmas decorations.

Great wedding pic destination

By Torres8174 |

I was part of a wedding party and this was the place to go for great pics. It is very popular for all occasions, but in particular weddings. There is a fee of I believe $150 for a permit. The trees and flowers, water fountains are very beautiful. Also nice for a romantic Sunday stroll.

Lovely afternoon visit

By jenknits |

Spent several hours strolling around the gardens in the afternoon. It was lovely and peaceful. The lilacs were in bloom which were delightful and fragrant! We meandered to the rock garden (forgot the name — sorry), which is a series of rock formations with various waterfalls. The tulips were in bloom in the walled gardens — white, pink & deep purple. Just magnificent! Walking under the massive weeping willows as when entering the walled gardens makes me feel like I am be transported to another time & place. With each step there are new details to discover and beauty to behold! At various places the Hudson River is the backdrop, adding to the magnificent views! And best of all, it’s free and open to all! Love that!!! There are typically volunteers just inside the walled gardens who share tidbits & have maps. The walk to the bottom of the rock garden is steep and it is a mulched pathway (hard for anyone with mobility issues). Also, it can be quite busy depending on the day and time. However, one can usually find a quiet place to take in the beauty!

Hidden Yonkers Gem

By Tuesday247 |

The Untermeyer Gardens is beautiful place to visit, no entrance fee and two small parking lots. The garden is beautifully appointed with flowers, statues, and trellises. It’s a beautiful backdrop for photographers/artists. There’s The Temple of Love, a quaint structure, looks like a gazebo overlooking a waterfall cascade through a series of rock gardens to a pool below. There were a number of families and couples around the grounds enjoying their surroundings either lounging on the grass, taking pictures, taking a nap under a tree or simply overlooking the Hudson river. The garden reminded me of the Roman Boboli Gardens as well as The Acropolis of Greece. This place is worth a repeat visit!

Awesum weather during Springtime 2018 but to be honest, the trip seen here happened in Spring of 2017!...

By Katvr84 |

Hi. Untermeyer park has been in North Yonkers ever since I was a kid and long before then, too! And the time era i am talking about is the 1990s
when I already a growing little kid. Ok, this post is NOT about me. It’s about Untermeyer park, located off of North Broadway avenue, and is adjacent or beside St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, NY.
Lovely views of the Hudson River and the Palisades can be seen after you continue to walk past the first built garden near the Charles Community Center at entrance of Untermeyer Park. In Summertime, years back, there were concerts and dance performances in the Untermeyer fields and it was awesome, fun and was a great way to grow up—an invest in the diverse city of Yonkers, NY—complete with a Ukrainian festival further on north Broadway.

As soon as you step through the doors its like you entered a different town completely. Its got a beautiful vista with a view of the river. Great place to take pictures too.

Lovely gardens. Beautiful plantings. You can see the top gardens in an easy 45 minutes. It was too hot to head down towards the Hudson. Stunning view of the Palisades.

It was fun!!

By Josh D |

I enjoy nature!! I don’t like being emerged fully in trees because then I feel like Walter White or Daniel Day Lewis (meaning I want to hide or not be in public viewing)!! I enjoy cities and trees and plants!! I got fake plants for my dorm because I thought I wouldn’t care for a real one and it would die!! Anyway I went here with my grandma and it is very calming!! We walked around and saw the views!! We were there for 10 or 15 minutes!!

Doesn't get much better than this...

By Jemlnlx |

A lovely experience. The gardens are beautiful and well kept. There are a bunch of scenic overlooks and even hiking trails. You can easily spend a few hours there. The main area (walled garden) is what you see in most of the photos that people post, from there the garden branches off into some overlooks, including that of the Hudson river. There are two small parking lots that hold a total of about 25 cars or so, but I noticed coming in that there is a lot of street parking. I went there on a Sunday afternoon (1pm) and was able to get a spot inside the private lot. One of the best things about this place is that its free!! The closest thing I can compare this place to is Wave Hill, which is in the Riverdale area I believe and also overlooks the Hudson, but there is a small fee of about $8ish, if I remember correctly. I saw that there was a tour guide that was explaining to a group about the history behind this place. I recommend this place to anyone, you'll have a great time!!

Hidden Gem! Stunning Gardens!

By OlTaNY |

The gardens are absolutely beautiful. Design, view, ponds, flowers .. everything. You will not spend there more than an hour, but it is better than many botanical gardens. If you are in the area, you should definitely visit them.

I grew up going to Untermyers inYonkers. My brother took me often and he went his entire life. We recently donated a bench in his honor and made the trip to visit the gardens. great find in Yonkers

By joyce a |

Beautiful day in December, looking for a place to take a walk... Came across Untermeyre Gardens and loved every minute of it. Walked through the garden area to down to the Aquaduct Path. Walked about an hour on the trails then came back up to the Untermeyer property. Loved being along the Hudson as well as seeing some very old ruins up close and personal
Great little getaway right here in our own Westchester backyard

Wow!

By travelingrm |

Untermeyer Garden is a beautiful place. Walking into the walled garden reminded me of Alhambra in Grenada, Spain. This was our first visit and unfortunately there were no tours which means we have to go back in the Spring. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with Persian, Greek and Roman structures. The trees and shrubs and fountains were amazing on this sunny day. The views of the Hudson River and the NJ Palisades are breathtaking.

Beautiful and peaceful place to wonder around.

By Laurie G |

A wonderful place to wander around. Very pretty and relaxing. Hopefully they will be able to keep working on the gardens to get them back to their original beauty.

Stunning garden

By Sarah M |

Enter into the walled garden and be amazed at the layout. .the mixture of stone ornament, water, shrubs and flowers combined with a view across the Hudson is stunning and not what you expect. Walk down to the lower viewing point too. Yes work continues to complete the rennovations but its worth a visit now

Nice place for a short visit

By flashlightout |

Fun to see the gardens and walk the grounds. Saturday afternoons could be fun if you like to see a parade of bridal party photos shoots. Enjoy the Hudson river views, the gardens, ponds an fountains. Don't forget to walk the long walk down the North-East corner for a closer look at the river (Vista Overlook, restored 2017) and follow the path back up to the Temple of Love!

Great Gardens

By Brian C. |

This is a beautiful park right in Yonkers. I have not been in the summer when everything is in bloom and I am sure gorgeous. Be sure to check out the loooong staircase the leads to the Hudson River. Supposedly the Son of San spent some time here.

Disappointing

By cary s |

My group of 3 were unimpressed. It may be a good place for the concerts others have mentioned or for a quiet period of sitting in the outdoors. However, it is not very interesting from the standpoint of a stroll through beautiful gardens. This is a small garden that can be walked in a few minutes and was not worth our 20 minute drive from a nearby town.

Not the Untermyer's Garden you ay remember as a kid

Grew up in Yonkers, used to go the Untermyers to drink beer. The place looked like it was bombed. NO MORE. Although work still needs to be done with the renovation (which has been in progress for years) you can see firsthand the beauty of the park that once was. The restoration plan is in full motion! Don't miss it.

Magnificence personified.

Spring- Summer-Fall a true sight to see. A Garden Park from a Age Of Innocence Estate. The Manor Home has been raised but the park remains. Views of the Hudson and Palisades a added plus. Enjoy, Enjoy, and Enjoy.

Beautiful Gardens

By Richard D |

Took the chairmen's tour this past Sunday ( 7/12/15) and it was well worth it. The amount of background information that was shared opened up a new level of understanding of this local treasure. We have been to Untermeyer's many times below to just walk and take in the gardens, we have seen this property in many states of repair & decay over the years. Now it is being transformed back to its original grandeur. Of course it will take time and money to fully accomplish this, but it is well on it's way. Everyone in the tri-state area should make it a point to visit . Highly recommend taking one of the many tours offered.

A Must See

By Siobhan O |

One of my new favorite places to visit. Free to get in and free parking. Many beautiful gardens to walk and see overlooking the Hudson River. I highly recommend this garden to all my friends. A nice day trip out of Brooklyn.

Urban Oasis

By Cinns |

We felt like we discovered hidden treasure! Untermyer Gardens has, apparently, been around since the 1800s, but has fallen into disrepair and been restored several times through the years. This latest restoration was well worth the effort the Conservancy put into it. It is a unique, beautiful, interesting, unexpected oasis in the middle of Yonkers!
We particularly loved the Rock and Stream Garden below "The Temple of Love" and the urban character retained in the Gate House. There was a philharmonic concert at the Walled Garden so we didn't get to see the whole thing, but what a lovely place for a concert!
We cannot wait to go back to explore some more.

A few things to note:
- Only the upper part of the property is stroller/wheelchair friendly, unless you are prepared to use the bumpy, mulch-covered paths that take the long way through the property. I felt terrible for the man carrying a stroller back up the dozens of steps of "The Vista," as well as for his wife carrying their young chid!
-The property is built on a hill that goes down via steps or paths; I'd venture to say it's not ideal for those who have trouble with stairs or uneven surfaces.
- There is one restroom at the top. (There was a line for the men's room, but none for the women's - definitely a first!)
- It is free (yes, really!) to visit and there was no gift shop and no places to purchase water or food, so bring your own - blankets are allowed in several areas and there are picnic tables when you walk in.
- The parking lot is tiny, so bring a few quarters for metered street parking,

I love this place. The gardens are beautiful, the view of the river is beautiful. This is a magical place.

Unexpected surprise

By TheDoor_isopen |

This must have been a revelation in its time so I was surprised to learn that it was now known as the US's most forgotten garden. With some stunning vistas it must be difficult to maintain on its unusual site which in some places is quite steep - some of the constructions such as the Temple of Love are really unusual and photogenic. It was sad to see a beautiful mosaic pool left cracked and empty. Nevertheless it's a worthwhile visit for those interested in unusual gardens. I would definitely recommend parking on the street - there aren't many spaces in the small car park.

HIDDEN GEM IN YONKERS

By naika_kb |

My friend and i found this beautiful Gem by mistake. It is great for a picnic with friends or a love one. The park is kept clean which i appreciate. The hiking trail leads to another beautiful spot ( croton gorge aqueduct ). Sunset here is beautiful !!!! Peaceful !!!! Do plan accordingly because the garden close down by sunset as well ! You don’t pay the get in but parking is seemingly limited.

Hidden gem

By KTBNY |

This site has beautiful gardens and some ruins (columns, walls, pool). There is a structure built on a stone outcropping called the Temple of Love; don't miss it! There are also some easy hiking trails around the grounds and overlooks of the Hudson River. It is easily accessible by car, train, and bike. The grounds are accessible from the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail by foot or bike. There's a carriage trail that winds its way up to the gardens from the Trail. They also have free concerts on Saturday nights on the big lawn. There is limited parking. During the week, there were not a lot of people. There are paid tours on Sundays but otherwise, it's free.

Beautiful gardens that make you forget all else

By Sierra |

Truly lovely gardens, particularly the water gardens with some of the most unique water plants I've ever seen. Composition is wonderful! A place of beautiful respite. Lived for 18 years in Riverdale and never knew this garden was so close by. Wonderful discovery.

Hidden treasure north of nyc

A beautiful historic walled garden. Short easy walking among beautiful gardens with architectural backdrops and views of the Hudson River. Great for all ages and I would imagine for all seasons.

Beautiful destination

By Rob C |

Although I live in New York City I almost never go to Yonkers. Nevertheless, we made Untermeyer Gardens our bike ride destination and were not disappointed. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained with numerous unusual structures overlooking the Hudson. If you drive on a beautiful summer or fall weekend parking might be a challenge but it was easy to secure our bikes

See what Old Money can create

By robert c |

What a gorgeous garden and park once owned by the wealthy untimeyer family and left to run down by the city of yonkers. a past mayor Phil Amicone put great effort to restore the many fountains and gardens and make it a very desired spot for movie crews to film many major movies.

One of my favorites locations in Weschester.

By Anna Bak |

Beautiful place....I love to go there during the week. It is not very crowded...
Sunset is amazing ♥️♥️♥️

Beautiful and relaxing

Even on a dark winter day, the grounds are impressive. I actually enjoyed seeing some left over snow from the recent storms. It made for some excellent black and white photos!

Breath Taking

This is a beautiful park with awesome views. There are concerts and plays performed here for free during the summer. The park is undergoing major renovations. Many of the statues and columns are being restored. Just walking by the gardens is so relaxing.

Inspiration at its finest

By ktbeenthere2015 |

The grounds, created at a time when historic art, bubbling pools and gardens wove a haven for respite, have a stunning vista of the Hudson. Decorative objects, grottos, wandering trails, and views give pause for contemplation, conversation and candid shots. You just need a love of the outdoors to appreciate. Visitors ranged in ages from infants to their great grandparents. Everyone can find fulfillment of one (or more) of the senses.

At first daunted by the descent on the regal staircase to the Hudson viewpoint realizing the return uphill, but by utilizing the trails with more gradual slopes and by taking my time, I experienced not a single pant at the end. I even descended to the lowest trail. The temple of love is heavenly and - in September- swarming with the migrating monarch butterflies.

Riding a combination of the 1 subway and the BeeLine bus 2 from Manhattan to Tudor House (last stop) was quite straightforward taking almost 2 hours. I tried to return by the 6 beeline bus and the MetroNorth from Yonkers but the bus did not arrive as scheduled. Not wanting to wait another hour, I returned the same route. Both the beeline buses are steps from the entrance. The Greystone Manor stop on the MetroNorth line was closed the day I visited- check the schedule to ensure it has re-opened if you prefer that option.

I recommend bringing a book, a snack or a drink for an excuse to spend more time soaking up the beauty and to lose oneself in the homage to serenity.

Gardens with a View

By Kathy S |

While traveling to the area for a wedding we chose to spend some time at Untermyer Gardens. I'm a flower lover and at first glance I knew we made the right choice. The gardens are filled with species you do not see every day along with water fountains, walled gardens, cascading stairways leads you to the Hudson River. Rock Garden nearby is Tower of Love rocks with cascading waterfall, the adventure thru the pools into an amphitheater with tropical plants in the water and flowering trees scattered along the grounds. Lilac and hydrangea gardens, full of color thru the seasons.

Always beautiful

By Joan P |

If you are expecting world class formal gardens , you will be disappointed . If you want to uncover a gem , a bit dilapidated but loved by many try this secret garden . Interesting romantic whimsical architecture . Stunning Husdon River views . Great place for waking contemplating enjoying .
Old croton aqueduct trail is nearby for a jog .
I was here in May and in December and both times it was a pleasure .

Waiting to be discovered

Wife found a Gem in Yonkers NY

By Thomas S |

The other good reviews are right on the money . Although i have been going to and passing through the area for years i have never known about this park . My wife was sure we had gone or that i knew about it and never took her . We decided to go one weekend and walk a while . We found the grounds and garden to be well cared of . We drove down from N White Plains and took the back roads . If you hike all the way to the back of the park you are rewarded with views of the Palisades of New Jersey and the river from a high elevation . Plan on wearing hiking shoes or boots but trails are not difficult . Parking and entry are free .

All that remains of a grand Estate

By jtonthego |

Bring a friend and wander the garden and what remains including an outdoor theater near ra shackled pool. Volunteer have been lovingly attempting to restore thee gardens with sandal favorites such as tulips in he spring and mums in the fall. A peak at what used to a grand garden of a now missing home of a huge estate that is no longer.mworth a short visit.

Wow what a surprise!

By schmutaki |

Grew up in the north Bronx not too far and had never been or heard of it before. The place is so nice. The Temple of Love is just beautiful with the waterfalls and landscaping. The walled garden and vista overlook are beautiful as well. They are doing a nice job of renovating. The tiled pool in the walled garden is dilapidated but interesting. One day it will be magnificent. Entry is free and parking can be tight on a nice day. This place is a real treat.

Beautiful in Any Season

By Barbara M |

We chanced upon this treasure, with its ancient Roman columns, Persian tiled pool, and Mycenaean atriums — not to mention magnificent Hudson River views — many ago when time and vandals had done their work. We return a few times a year, and always there is improvement. This past year, Untermyer Garden was a showplace. From the wisteria to the roses and the tall specimen trees, breathtaking in autumn, to the waterfall and gate house with its stone lions, it heartens back to a different world. There is more to be done, but — because it is also a very human place — you can almost see Untermyer’s collies frisking around, not to mention Isadora Duncan dancing on the outdoor stage, flanked by two columns topped by Naxian sphinxes.

More recently, we visited the Untermyer Garden to see the Christmas and Chanukah lights. It was an icy-cold night, but Untermyer volunteers were cheerful as they handed out hot apple cider, and we were glad to pepper them with questions which they readily and knowledgeably answered.

It’s that sort of place — where those who visit and those who are so enthusiastically and painstakingly reviving and, for lack of a better word, curating this most charming of gardens really love the place. Bit by bit, new areas are being brought out of their weedy tangles, cleaned of graffiti, and stabilized, and replanted according to old plans.

Untermyer was quite a fellow — one of the good men of his era. After he died and the estate was closed up and given to Yonkers, his family donated the dancing girls fountain to the Conservatory Garden in Central Park. Its joyous whimsy is exactly what Untermyer Garden is all about.

Yonkers is fortunate to have this

Few people know the history of Untermeyer gardens. Once upon a time it was the home of a wealthy lawyer. The property included St. John's hospital also. The lawyer and house are long gone but the beautiful gardens remain. It is a beautiful tranquil place to visit and enjoy.

Stroll through time

By Missy G |

It’s no wonder that Untermeyer Park is a favorite for wedding photos. Its neoclassical style garden sculpture and fountains are like those seen in Middle Eastern pleasure gardens. The gardens themselves are walled and you almost can’t believe you are steps from busy North Broadway. Below the gardens are 43 acres of grassy park with steps and old ruins of the Greystone estate which the park is a remnant of. There are so many urban legends related to this space, it’s hard not to let the imagination wander. Excellent view of the Hudson River and the Palisade formations from the sculpture gardens. Come see the hidden beauty in Yonkers.

Fascinating

By MS06 |

The Untermyer Gardens must have been spectacular in thier heyday, as part of a grand estate. A large portion was sold off to a hospital, and the rest fell into disrepair for many years, but the beautiful walled Persain garden has been restored. A popular place for bridal photos, with ponds borders of shrubs and a view over the Hudson.

It's very badly signposted - look for a driveway just after the hospital.

A gorgeous gem in Yonkers...who knew !

By trra |

We were visiting our daughter in Hartsdale, and she found this garden online. It is absolutely gorgeous! Yes there are parts that are in disrepair (which is a pity) but there is so much beauty still there it is worth it. The Walled garden reminded me a bit of Alhambra Palace in Granada Spain, but was based on the Garden of Eden as described in Genesis. I am sure the now ruined mosaic tile pool was stunning in it's Heyday. We even stumbled upon a Firefighters memorial that my Firefighter Husband loved. But my absolute favorite was the Temple of Love. The Cantilevered temple is fabulous, with lots of hidden passages. And the view is just breathtaking. If in this general area I would highly recommend not missing this beauty of a place.

Spectacular

By Rylee |

Entering this property transports you to a magical place.. the unique trees and shrubs, colorful annuals and even the hanging gardens. Do not miss the waterfall garden on the other side of the property. I wish we left a bigger window of time as I did not want to leave. I hope to return someday..we were lucky to get parking, but it was a misty rainy day. Thank you Mr.Untermyer and everyone's hard work that has gone into this Amazing place.

A Yonkers Gem

By KAB3075 |

This gem is one of my favorite places in Yonkers. From the beautifully kept gardens, to the trails and slightly spooky remains of the carriage house below; you could spend hours here taking in the Hudson river views and enjoying the peace and tranquility of the grounds.

Hard to pick a favorite - the walled garden? the Temple of Love? the staircase to the river? the gatehouse plantings?

A spectacular rescue and preserve mission of one of America's most celebrated gardens.

A landmark brought back to life

You must see this beautiful gem of a Gilded Age garden which has been lovingly restored with period details. Isadora Duncan danced here, and now one can envision how lovely it must have been.

Beautiful Gardens in easy reach

By jtravels11 |

We were pleasantly surprised. The garden was only a short drive from our hotel and was a slice of heaven. We went into the Walled Garden area. Everyone in our family found it beautiful and relaxing. There were a lot of great places for photos (there were groups there taking wedding pictures but I think permits are required). You could also download digital tour guide that gave background information on some parts of the garden (a few were audio). We went around 9:30 on a Sunday so it wasn't too hot yet and parking was abundant (when we left around 11:30, some people were circling the lot. There were some places to relax in the shade, but we all had bottled water and I had an umbrella for additional shade.

The park is located int the north Yonkers area adjacent to the Hospital. It's been a fixture in the community for decades. There is a community center located in the park for seniors and parking is available. If your looking for a peaceful place to enjoy a a bagged lunch this is the place to go.

Beautiful green spot in Yonkers, about half an hour outside the city. Pretty panoramic views, gorgeous expansive gardens, intriguing architecture that makes you think maybe this is a little Greek oasis. Walking paths. Very peaceful for the most part (aside from the typical selfie taking groups). Picnic areas. Free entry! I’m going to stop by again when traveling outside NYC.

Untermyer Gardens is a lovely, quiet place to walk outdoors. Admission is free. The gardens are in the process of being refurbished from years of neglect, and a wonderful job is being done. The grounds have a couple of nice walking paths, some incredible Hudson River views, and some nice sculptures and structures. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, and it is worth a visit.

Absolutely gem

By Ed W |

Untermeyer Park is a TREASURE. Great to visit any time. April-October the gardens are beautiful. We went to the holiday light display this time. Only a few weeks from early December through New Years Day..
Stunning, peaceful, and beautiful.
Gets crowded and you may have to park on the street, if lot is full.
You can visit numerous times a year and see the gardens differently. Paths to walk on, incredible views, overlooking the Hudson River. My favorite place to visit in Westchester County, if not entire area.

Beautiful Park--Better than expected!

Went for an afternoon in the Spring and can't wait to go back. Garden is beautiful and peaceful. My kids loved to explore the walks and paths in the woods. Looking forward to returning.

One of a Kind

By NJ_Diver79 |

From the majestic weeping beech trees that frame the entrance to the carefully cultivated local cactus species tucked into the rocks around the waterfall, Untermeyer Gardens Conservancy is a destination that has hidden gems around every corner and deserves multiple visits until you can fully appreciate its breath and width.

Remarkably, there is no entrance fee although donations are accepted. The scale of labor and resources it must take to upkeep the gardens throughout the year is most certainly significant and shows in the meticulous attention to detail evident throughout.

Depending on the day and the season you can have a vastly different experience in terms of crowding. Some days it's difficult to find parking and hard not to walk through a wedding party or quinceañera photo session. Other days you can roam freely without seeing many people at all.

I particularly like the stroll through the forest where the tree canopy provides shade and cool temperatures as you walk up from the river overlook to the waterfall. There are very few restrictions on what you can do or bring. It's not uncommon to see people have a picnic lunch and lay out on a blanket in one of the grassy knolls.

The sheer variety of flora is also amazing. And if you happen to run into one of the caretakers they can add excellent commentary about the history and variety of plant life around you.

Whether you're a gardener, photographer, naturalist or just looking for a beautiful place to relax, Untermeyer Gardens has something for everybody.

Untermyer Gardens

By kaye Kaye |

This is a historical site, which used to be a mess for a long time, but is being revitalized quite nicely. They have tours there and events, especially in the spring and summer time, which is the best time to go. I love the fountains and it is a beautiful place when the flowers are all in bloom. However the fall is also nice, the grounds still have greenery and overlook the Hudson river.

By Natali M |

Was in the area with a friend who recommended to visit. What a wonderful experience, get away from reality!! Will definitely come back!

Lots of Potential

I went for the holiday light display and a walk around the garden on a cold winter night. It was beautiful and a nice thing to do in the evening since I live nearby. I wouldn't recommend driving too far to see this until the restorations are more advanced.

A surprising oasis

By laurenceb284 |

The Untermyer gardens are part of an estate that was donated to Yonkers. For years it was rundown, but they've done a lot of work on it recently, this year adding a new waterfall and redoing a lot of the tiles in the Roman garden.

You could easily drive by this place (it's on rte 9 a little south of Executive Blvd and the hospital) and have no idea it's there. It is spectacular, and worth a half hour stroll.

They also have musical shows in the summer.
