Favorite beach.

By kbbohio |

This is one of my favorite vacation spots. During the week it's not real busy. The beach and boardwalk area are always clean. Plenty of great places to eat.

Great Day at the Beach

By William98 |

Had a great time at the beach. Stayed at the Marriott Va Beach Oceanfront. Beach is clean and very wide.

Clean and Pristine beach

By Pradeep S |

Virginia beach is one of the clean, safe and pristine beaches I have visited in the US. The beach is almost flat for nearly 50 yards. Kids and Adults can wander into the water almost 25-40 feet into the water and will still feel safe and secure. The currents are not that strong unless you visit during high tide.

We visited VA beach in mid Sept. and the water was still warm and fun to play with. Our 9 year old son thoroughly enjoyed playing in the water since the currents are not that strong. I will definitely visit this beach again next summer.

A pleasure

By GoingPlacesWanderlust |

Even though there still a pandemic Virginia Beach is a pleasure to be at and very pleasant as always! The beach is plenty big to social distance yourself and everyone was very good about doing that - most people on the boardwalk kept distance or wore masks so you didn’t have to have issues with that and restaurants require it as well as do the hotels. Really like Virginia Beach as opposed to Atlantic City or Wildwood. Like that the beach is not your typical wooden boards but cement which makes it easier to walk or bike on and speaking of biking - there’s a separate biking path which you can use all day not just certain hours in the morning. The whole boardwalk from one into the other I think is only a little over 5 miles so great walking or riding a bike.

Not the good all American family beach it once was

By Tour23704259947 |

I have been going there 40 years and have always enjoyed it. I raised my kids on that beach. Now it is ridiculously crowded with 85+ % non-English speakers. They are rude, very loud and loud music, invasive to the point we had to say get back, they were on out blanket, they shake there sandy stuff to where it blows on you. And the smell of pot passed by often. Last time I will be going there.

It was alright

By 4qqqq |

NOT the most scenic or prettiest, but still a nice visit. Tear down all the hotels and it would be better.

Love the beach

By Lori M |

Very clean! Need to bring your chair, tent or umbrella, some towels, drinks and the kids. All will have fun.

first timer amazing

By Megan L |

This is a nice beach, first time actually being on a beach, I must say very clean and very warm water. I loved swimming at this beach even though it can get very crowded very fast. Most people have spots before 8am, so if you wanna get a good spot and a good time try to go as early as you can. But no matter this beach is an icon for Virginia and I must say it lives up to the title! Will be back!

Virginia beach

By Sade8021 |

It was ok. They got a strip with a bunch of stores and things to do. The bordwalk was boarning kind of bland. But getting in the water at the beach is always fun when your being safe

#1 on my List

By JustCho |

Great place to jog or walk, separate path for bikes etc. I like how they comb the beach and ensure it is always clean. It is well planned, from the lights, benches, showers, even the entertainment for different age groups (horseback, sport/health enthusiast, rides, events) Hats off VA Beach! That is why I keep coming back!

Great place

By Claudia F |

What a great place to stay Great employees, friendly and helpful will stay here again. Clean tools whenever needed and great advice from all

Big beach, geared more towards adults

By Jessica C |

The beach is pretty clean and very large. The kids had a lot of fun. We rented a cabana for $25 which served us quite well with an infant. There were trash and recycle cans available. There was also a shower and foot rinse at each beach entrance. The average rating is mostly because we came as a family with young kids and atmosphere isn’t really focused on families. Seemed to be more of an adult/party crowd in the location where we set up. Might be different in another area.

Awesome beach

By Dunn1012 |

Busy but plenty of room for everyone. You can see dolphins from the beach. Miles of beach to walk. The sand is clean but hot! The water is clean and refreshing. It’s a great beach and close to many things to do.

Great day at the beach!

By Kimberly S |

We spent a day at the beach. The sand is fine and the beach is well maintained. I would recommend going on a weekday when things are less busy. We were there on a Thursday in July. We parked at the 2nd street lot on the south side of the beach. Parking was $7 for the entire day. The beach had a playground, bathrooms, and showers. There was a nice sandbar which allowed our kids to go pretty far out into the ocean. The lifeguards were great. There were some kids that had to be saved from the water after getting into a deep area. We ate at Waterman's Grille which is very close by.

Overall - Virginia Beach is

By Greg |

a nice vacation spot to visit with the family. Or even a romantic couples getaway.

The boardwalk and beaches themselves are kept clean. And there are a lot of stores, restaurants, bars, ice cream shops, etc. along Atlantic/Pacific Ave. You can walk for miles just on this street only!

Cheers!

Beautiful even in February

By Sienna's Mom |

We went here a few times in the days we visited the Virginia Beach area. The beach is so lovely with calming water. And it had a few things for the kids to see and do as there was also a play ground.

Book Ahead

By Lee F |

Hotels can get pricey unless you book months ahead but most the restaurants are inexpensive. Must stay on the beach! One of the best beaches on the Mid-Atlantic with a matching concrete 40 block boardwalk. They should allow electric bike rentals and maybe scooters.

Fun beach experience!

By bakerm2290 |

Beach was very clean. Not many shells. Wear shoes- the sand is very hot and it has a long stretch before you get to the water. Neptune and the boardwalk were a lot of fun!

Very Nice Town

By ShannonTravers |

I’m from Maryland and I prefer Virginia Beach over Ocean City any day. Every one there is friendly, polite and helpful. We walked from 28 th street down to the beginning of the board walk. There were absolutely 0 bars on the boardwalk unlike Ocean City which has bars every two or three store fronts. All the bars, restaurants and shops where on the street behind the hotels, not on the boardwalk. We will definitely go back again.

Loved the beach..

By Rajagopal S |

Who doesnt like Virgina beach.. its such an awesome place to visit with family.. So many restaurants in boardwalk.. kids love everything .. love cycling , walking/ running in the beach.. the only issue is travelling to the beach from Richmond or up north. its crowded on the weekends and other public holidays.. if not for the travel, its an awesome place to spend quality time with family.. Will go again when we visit..

Always a pleasant visit

By Kelly C |

Whether in season or out of season, the beach is lovely. Clean, well kept, safe. This time was a little chilly but still a great place to be.

Clean Beach, Great Area

By Thecatlvt |

VA Beach never disappoints. Well taken care of during the early hours and by the beach crew well before 7 am. Space for everyone and great lifeguards.

Great Family Destination

By Luigi |

No need to search for a friendlier vacation spot than the Virginia Beach oceanfront. From the Neptune statue to the fishing pier, the boardwalk provides a variety of attractions and great exercise (it's over 30 blocks long). My favorite time to walk along the beach is during our many festivals and music concerts. Virginia Beach is music icon Pharrell Williams hometown and you don't want to miss when many of his friends come to visit for the annual "Something In The Water" music/cultural festival. Enjoy.

Beautiful beaches

By marcogliese |

Beautiful beach, clean. We walked along a beach surrounded by sand dunes. In May not many tourists.

My Happy Place

By Teresa M |

Love the beaches, so open and always clean. So much to do in the surrounding area from biking and beach walking brewery tours, Naval base and food tours. People are friendly and love their city.

Sea... Sky...Sand...

By Sue and Bill |

Very clean and well kept. Not for seashell collecting though. Surf is nice. Not too rough. People were swimming....brrrr!

Beautiful Place to Live and Visit

By TCB |

Not enough things to say about this beautiful place! Love Va Beach, the ocean, the vibe! It is a great town!

Disappointing Labor Day

By notmark |

The beach was beautiful, on the bad side ,homeless took over every bench every cubby hole on the boardwalk and main street...couldnt even sit down with a cup to watch the sunrise

Awesome Beach!

By Jacob T |

Virginia Beach was an awesome five day family vacation spot. We spent all five days on the beach which was absolutely beautiful. The beach was very clean. I suggest getting there early and finding your spot as it starts to get busy around 10am. It was nice having life guards especially with the kids.

Releasing Dad Ashes June 9, 2025

By Donita M |

Beautiful place to visit.. The people was nice and friendly.. The water was wonderful.. Food places were great.. I’d the pleasure of releasing my dad ashes!

Beautiful Clean Beach with Dolphins and Entertainment

By A.Traveler |

No matter when you vacation in Virginia Beach there is always something going on. From Monster Trucks on the Beach, The Patriotic Festival with free beach concerts, Beer Festivals, The Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend with International Sandsculpture Competition, Christmas Lights on the Boardwalk, not to mention the many fabulous restaurants located here, there is definitely Something for everyone.

I could live at this beach!

By leahr129 |

I grew up here as a Navy Bratt. I just helped move my oldest here to be with her Navy husband. It was so great to be back and the peaceful feeling of just sitting on the sand and watching the waves did wonders for my anxieties during quarantine. The beach is clean and people are doing their part to wear masks and social distance. Being October, there was plenty of parking and no crowds. Perfect for rejuvenation and finding peace of mind.

Clean up Virginia Beach too much smoking and too much nudity

By brendaboo h |

I go to the beach to have a good time with my fiancé
And all you see is naked women running around on Atlantic Avenue on the boardwalk in the restaurants they’re high and showing their breastare showing everything’s hanging out now if we would’ve had kids with us that would’ve been an awful experience and you smell weed all over the boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue. I don’t know what happened to
Indecent exposure they need to cover up I don’t know why a man would walk with a woman and all of her breast hanging out. That’s disgusting to be in a restaurant and see someone sitting beside you looking like that and their butt hanging out they need to clean up Virginia Beach don’t take your children. Don’t go as a family. It’s terrible.
Now Rubee inlet fishing boat was nice really nice and Pocahontas pancakes always a great place to eat, but the beach is getting terrible

It's how u want to remember it.

By William B |

Walking on the beach at night listening to the ocean, to strolling down the boardwalk. Many storefronts with variety of shops.

Drive past 83rd Street and up Shore Drive.

By Michael F |

My favorite drive in Virginia Beach is to drive along Atlantic Ave. and then on Pacific Ave. past 83rd Street. Keep going all the way up Shore Drive (4 miles) till you pass the area surrounded by forests. You soon come to a large Food Lion on your left. Very convenient for anything you need.

Clean beach

By yogamama40 |

Lovely beach that is well maintained. The sand is soft, beach is very clean and it is also nice and wide.

Beautiful!

By Wendy F |

We love this beach normally it is very clean however this year they are dredging the beach during the height of tourist season other than that it is gorgeous!

VA Beach

By A P |

Second time at Virginia Beach and the weather was great, the The water what is marvelous. Definitely will return

Virginia Beach is for lover's of mariuana.

By Geraldine H |

I was highly disappointed by this place. If you enjoy walking in a place where 90% of people is high and smell like marijuana, or cigars, then this is the place for you.
I personally found it ghetto and low class.
Do not go there with kids or family. I honestly won't even go alone. I can't believe this is even an attraction.

Very Clean

By DaniNYC |

The beach is very clean. My only disappointment was that it was brown and looks likes artificial sand though of course it isn’t and it did not feel like it. Again, it’s very clean. The water looks like New York ocean color-wise. Thought it would be a little more blue…

Ando

By Annette C |

Wonderful Beach, food, shops and activities to partake in. This is a beautiful destination place for family or single

Great place, clean, hotels are great, public works are great. The marijuana epidemic is real though.

By david a |

The place would get 5 stars from me if it weren't for the fact you get a second hand high from all the weed being smoked everywhere you go! The place was clean. It felt safe for the family to go and wonder the main avenue at dark. The shops are nice but repetitive merchandise. Again clean as could be. Lots of public employees hard at work keeping everything nice and the live entertainment is all around! As I said to start with, if you are coming as a family vacation, maybe the earlier you are out and about, the better experience you'll have. As the sun starts to set, it seems like everyone is smoking around and there's no designated smoking areas.

We just wanna have Sun ☀️

By Lorrie D |

Wonderful Beach! Clean, beautiful, serene... We selected the Park & Swim garage for $10 on 25th Street. The others were $20 & up. We stayed at the beach for an hour or so, just for the experience (I can’t swim 🏊🏽‍♀️ Lol). We then walked along the pier & went browsing through the many shops. It was a Great Day!

Love the free air show

By Tansy2015 |

They really care about the beach, every morning they’re cleaning the lamp posts, tidying up the sand with huge equipment and making sure the trash is all picked up. It’s clean, it’s safe, and you get to watch a free air show from the local F 18 fighter jet pilots as the train. What could be better than that!

We love VA beach!

By boxturtle |

Great beach, even during the pandemic!
Most people respected the mask order when indoors. Not very many people had masks on outside (including us). It was almost like off season which was nice in some ways but you really feel for the restaurants and stores that aren’t making the summer revenue they depend on for survival. The beach didn’t start getting crowded until the afternoon and the streets didn’t start getting crowded until evening. You can still avoid restaurants by getting take-out if you prefer.

Great low key trip

By kMichelle78 |

My fiancé and I came to celebrate a birthday and it was a great decision. The beach is beautiful and even with an event, it wasn’t overly crowded at all. The weather is still amazing. Get an Oceanside room and enjoy the sound of the waves!

Serenity

By 575virginiatraveler |

A nice clean beach that caters to everyone’s needs. Family friends and solo - I’ve done it all. The evening summer entertainment is a delight and so appealing. I like how they clean the beach and animals aren’t allowed on the beach during the summer when most visitors are there. You can catch a great quiet early morning walk on jog.

Fighter jet noise

By Jen J |

The beach is very clean! We thought it was very noisy during the day/evening on the beach and the boardwalk because of the fighter jets practicing flight patterns. Sometimes I felt like I needed earplugs...it was loud.

Beautiful, Clean, and Family Friendly

By BostonWhirlwind |

Grew up in Virginia and VA Beach has come a LONG WAY. It is so beautiful, I don’t understand why a Virginian would seek a beach anywhere else.

Great beach

By Scott J |

We laid on the beach at 20th. Rented a cabana and 2 loungers all day for 52.00. Big wide beach. Was able to swim in the ocean. Will be back.

Amazing Beach

By Smitty502 |

Very well groomed every morning water was like glass when we where there:) a lot of people there but plenty of room for all loved it there

Be aware of fighter jets SUPER LOUD

By Meredith D |

Wonderful beach, as everyone says. I'm just here to post that if you have kiddos with SPD the continual stream of fighter jets roaring overhead might be an issue! Other than that it's great.

Waste of time. Beach closes at 5:00pm and had no idea

By Charity P |

Completely unaware that the beaches close at 5:00 p.m. and you are completely prohibited from even going near them during this time of year. A complete waste of time, money, and a lifelong dream of spending the New Year at this beach.

Never Coming Back

By 2Hap |

What a shocker!! Younger than us were hanging out along Atlantic Ave. Loitering everywhere. Obscene hand gestures. Louder than normal voices. Yes, we are white. Yes, we are in our mid-sixties. But we grew up with the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin. Vietnam. We are not racists. I must say, this was the first time EVER we did not feel safe while traveling. We didn’t even step foot on the beach. No one would let us through even though we said “excuse me” only to be met with glares. We didn’t leave our rooms after that. Even when we finally decided to leave - we didn’t unpack - we were flipped off at the stop light. The beach was littered. What we could see between the groups of young people - Atlantic Ave looked dirty. When did kids start hanging in the streets of beach towns?? This place is definitely not Destin, Florida or Hilton Head.

Virginia Beach is good but not for kids.

By Oliver |

Virginia Beach is beautiful. They’re are a few problems though. Firstly, there are a lot of homeless people on the boardwalk. Next there is a strong smell of weed almost everywhere on the boardwalk and the beach. Lastly, the current is very strong. There are lots of times when a wave will pull in and new ones push out, creating cross currents. The waves can also be very aggressive. A wave at waist height went over my head.

Great family beach with plenty to do nearby.

By LodiWineBob |

Have always enjoyed VA beach because it has a large beach. Warm water in summer feels good on these old bones. Always have felt safe there. Plenty of boardwalk attractions. Winter months are great for beach walkers and runners. Have stayed at a number of the nicer hotels and all have been nice a reasonably priced with lots of special rates.

Fun but overpriced place

By Bob G |

Stayed here for our 30th Anniversary. Came at the right time and had a lot of fun. Found the prices for everything to be around 20% higher than I thought was warranted.

Still no Metro rail service

By Scott |

As oceanfront areas go, Virginia Beach makes the cut. There's plenty of sand and some good restaurants. I visited on a very quiet late September weekday afternoon. The beach and boardwalk were being set up for the Neptune festival. After pricing some of the beachfront hotels for a short 2-day stay, I'm of the opinion that they are way overpriced given the popularity of the area this time of year.

The Virginia Beach oceanfront area can be a bit rough at times. Criminal activity is way up in the area. During my 4-day stay in Virginia Beach, there were nightly reports of hardcore police activity around the beach.

My number one reason for only giving Virginia Beach three stars Is the complete failure of the city of Virginia Beach to provide good public transportation to the waterfront. There is absolutely no logic behind a light rail service that only reaches as far as the border of Virginia Beach and Norfolk. During my 4-days I stayed at a brand new hotel in Virginia Beach is Town center. That area is completely devoid of good easy public transportation, and there is no quick way to get to the beach unless you have a car or take a very expensive Uber ride. Virginia Beach will never again be a world-class tourist attraction unless the light rail transportation is extended to the waterfront and run parallel to the waterfront.

Beautiful well kept beaches

By h0ylandm |

Our hotel was on the beach and during the day to walk out and be on the nice sandy beaches which are well maintained made this a great treat. Chairs and umbrellas were available to rent at about $30/day. Fortunately didn't need that but it is available. Lifeguards are on hand as the water has great waves.

Great Boardwalk and Beach !!

By DannyWasserman |

We love to go the expansive beach and peruse the boardwalk. Lots of shop and fun places to shop. They have a trolley to take you up and down the main strip.

Wonderful October Days

By Kim H |

Had a lot of charm in an unseasonably warm October -- felt like summer but well less crowded. Wide strands and fun boardwalk. End of the hotel strip near King Neptune statue had several nice properties. Relaxing pace with most nearby restaurants open in the off season.

Good beach

By Michelle H |

We spent a day at the beach here in July. We got down to the beach about 9:30 (the kids were very eager). It's not my favorite beach I've ever been to but it was nice. The high tide line left a very steep cut in the beach so you kinda have to stumble up and down that to get to the water which (at least where we set up it looked less extreme at other points along the beach). It wasn't overly littered (all beaches are a bit now because people are rude) but there were plenty of trash cans plus there were lifeguards on duty. The part we were at had a sandbar about 20 yards into the water which meant you could be a bit further out but still only in waist deep water. The water wasn't super clear but that could be due to storms further out (we got caught up in thunderstorms in the late afternoon/evening). By early afternoon the beach was full but not super crowded and at no point did I or my stuff feel unsafe. Over all it was a fine beach experience.

Not impressed

By Angela N |

My family and I visited VA Beach for 5 days a few weeks ago. I have visited many beaches but they have all been in FL. But, have visited both Atlantic and Gulf sides and been pleased. The first thing that we noticed was the jets flying over. I guess the locals call it the "sound of freedom".... Yeah... No... It was the sound of annoyance. Every 5-15 minutes the ear piercing sounds of jets. I've never heard something so loud. The second, very disappointing, thing was that there is NO free parking. Oh, they call it public parking but it's not free... We paid $30 for 3 days of parking. I couldn't believe it. I've never had to worry about paying for parking at any beach I've visited in FL. The beach was lovely, but void of shells, which my grandaughter was sad about. But, even though there were a lot of down sides, we had a beautiful time in the ocean and sand. Memories of my grandbabies that I will cherish. However, I have learned my lesson... I won't be back to VA Beach.

VA Beach...IS....for LOVERS!

By Marius S |

Have been coming down here from PA for over 20 years (Off/On) Next to Cape May/Wildwood NJ, is probably my most favorite vacation places within a 1 days driving distance! If you LOVE miles of clean beach and water, if you LOVE history, LOVE layed-back people, Fresh Seafood, Fishing, Bike Riding, Boogie Boarding and LOVE sharing all this with your mate/family....You'll LOVE VA Beach!!!

lemon9s

By lemon9s |

Everyone practice social distance. The beach was clean and very serene. Lifeguards were on duty. The water appears to be somewhat clean.

Awsome

By samtrip12345 |

While cold in January to be out on the beach, you can really appreciate the wonder of the eastern shore and how the location is being lost as the urban is slowly taking it over.

Great Beach

By Lynette C |

Have not been to Virginia Beach for 40 years and was pleasantly surprised when I returned. Nice sand and not as wide as other beaches so do not have to walk a mile to get near the water. My only complaint is cabanas, lounge chairs, etc. to rent were not near our Hampton North hotel.

Clean and soft sand

By V9225BXmariap |

Best beach on the east coast. Area is well maintained and pleasant atmosphere. Great for families. We even saw dolphins on our beach walks

Great beach

By Vicki A |

We found this beach to be beautiful and very inviting. Even though there were a lot of people, everyone seemed to be spaced out. We enjoyed our time here!

Beautiful beach

By Brenda S |

Stayed in an Airbnb on Virginia Beach in off season, Thanksgiving. The weather was ever changing but the beautiful beach was constant. Loved it.

Miles of Pristine Sand and Ocean

By dorotheah121 |

We love this beach. It's wide and clean and the sand is raked with machines every couple of days. We usually stay here in the spring and fall and it's never crowded. There are lots of historical markers and several fun playground areas for children.

Depends on the time of day & location.

By TravelingDad_PTFC |

During the day this place is way too crowded, especially with a pandemic going on, but we took a stroll in the evening & it was beautiful and not busy at all. Great place to visit if off the main drag for an after-dinner hangout.

Great Beach for the Family

By rgbedrosi |

Excellent family vacation to Virginia Beach. Many hotels to choose from right on the water. Most with suites and ocean view rooms. The water and sandy beaches were great. Just enough waves to go body surfing. The boys really enjoyed it. Showers available right on the boardwalk to clean off. Many places to eat and shop nearby. Entertainment at the band stands on the boardwalk.

Not worth it. Miserable experience.

By Amy B |

This is one of the worst vacations I have been on. The streets are dangerous for walking, sidewalks too narrow and no hawk lights at crosswalks. There is a 11.5% food tax when dining out and homeless people who yell at you. In my case it was about my children dying. I've never been so miserable at a beach and despite Ocean city's MD issues would prefer to go there over here. I do not plan on returning.

Beautiful Beach

By KC Gypsy Explorer |

Had a wonderful evening stroll on this beautiful beach. Woke up early the next morning to catch the sunrise and play in the surf a while.

Not too crowded

By Anna W |

My first time visiting a beach in the summer and I was surprised at how uncrowded it was. The beach was clean and very quiet. A little more surf than I like to wade in but that's Mother Nature. Hands off to the vendors providing lounge chairs and umbrellas. Greatly appreciated.

Great place to vacation

By rallensr |

Virginia Beach is one of the great places to vacation because it offers something for every age group. The boardwalk is second to none. The beach is well kept and clean. The variety of food places covers from inexpensive to the expensive. It has variety of fun things to do during the day and offers some nightlife things to do. You are able to walk, rent a bike or scooter and take a ride on the tram to move from one end of the beach to the other.

Standard east coast beach

By TheTravelAddiction |

The beach is clean and well maintained with a very nice boardwalk along it. It’s a little crowded but not to the point it’s an issue. While it’s a nice beach, there isn’t anything special about it.

Beautiful

By donna l |

Very clean, family friendly. In the Fall it is dog friendly. Great way to relax! Have been here before and will definitely come again!

Clean & safe & relaxing, beautiful beach!

By carolannsm |

The beach is very clean and big. They are out there every morning cleaning the beach and emptying all trash cans. The boardwalk has an area just for walking or another area to for bicycles. No dogs are permitted on the beach or boardwalk during the summer months & I watched as that was enforced by Animal Control. Beautiful beach!!

Long and clean

By Don Niznik |

Impressive beach in both scope and cleanliness. Every morning half a dozen tractors are at work leveling the sand and removing any debris from the preceding day. Almost every weekend there is one or more events taking place. The beach is some seven miles long with a cement boardwalk of three miles running alongside.

very clean

By Big Mike |

The beach itself is well maintained, looks to be cleared every day. not a lot of people this time of year.

Lovely days at the beach

By kelliwho |

Very clean beaches. Life Guard on duty. Disappointing no chairs and umbrellas rented until Memorial Day. They were there. Why not use?

Jets

By Peter H |

Virginia Beach is a great place for activities, and you can always get away from the tourist crush to Back Bay Wildlife Reserve or First Landing. But vacationers should be aware that fighter jets fly over regularly and they can be extremely loud. Best to know before you go.

Virginia Beach

By Louise A |

We go to Virginia Beach every year. Our time share is right in the middle of the boardwalk. The beach is always clean and well groomed. There is always plenty of room. We also like to walk the 3 miles of the boardwalk in the morning. Another nice thing is that the entertainment venues like Jungle golf are away from the beach on Atlantic and Pacific. We also like the free entertainment that is available all summer. Great place to go.

Fighter Jets, cigarettes and pot smoke

By JD-NotForMe |

I am glad the fighter pilots train, and we NEED military bases, but because of this, Virginia Beach should not be considered a vacation town. Barely mentioned in reviews, and locals say “you will get use to it” is not something you want to hear on an expensive vacation. And add in the chain smokers and pot smokers, you never get to actually breathe in the fresh ocean air, they light their next cigarette off the last one. My addictions only affect my health, I don't blow my high cholesterol and high blood pressure in other peoples faces, oh, and then throw it on the ground when i’m done.

If you haven't been here, your missing out

By Nolamommyof4 |

This is such an amazing place to visit. Virginia is not just for Lovers, it's also a great place for families. This was my second time here and I absolutely love it.

Don't think I stay again

By Amy W |

I guess I had high hopes. But I don't think I would choose to stay here again. The only awesome part was seeing all the jets fly over on a regular basis and a chance to see Navy ships.. Other than that too many obnoxious people in this area. If you stay, I recommend actually staying above 30th street and it will probably be quieter. Stayed at Hilton Oceanfront. Def not worth the money they charge. I felt like I was staying in a motel 6. And hard to find good coffee. The only good coffee joints we found were down around 17th/18th street near convention center. If you are older 40 and can't stand obnoxious people.. I recommend somewhere else.

Best trip ever

By Nolamommyof4 |

I cant say enough great and wonderful things about Virginia Beach. There is tons of things to do for all ages, lots if entertainment on every street, plenty of places to shop, the beach and sand is CLEAN, and everyone is happy and hospitable. My stay was too short but I will definitely be back.

By Johnusds |

The main beach in oceanfront was crowded, but this would obviously be typical for the summer. We also tried the bayside beach. Biggest complaint, like many beaches, is the cigarette butts. All over the sand. It’s like walking in an ashtray. It was particularly bad at the bayside beach, which probably doesn’t get cleaned as much as the oceanfront. Lots of restaurants, and tourism things, but typically bad traffic. It’s a rather congested area, but the area is a tourist Mecca, so no surprises there.

Pleasantly surprised!

By danifisher |

First time to VB with family if 5. Beach is nice and well maintained. Public access in multiple locations along shore with plenty of parking. Boardwalk is nice to walk, shop, and eat. There are chair rental places at several points. Waves are plenty and strong. Lifeguards are present. There were dolphins off shore daily. Oddly, there were not many seagulls or pelicans (abundant on other beaches)- the few we saw were late arrivers during the day. Many options for activities and fun along the beach. Got a little crowded mid-day with a lot of umbrellas.

Sonmuch more

By Kimberly McLaughlin |

The stores along Atlantic Aveune, along with the local carnivals for the children and adults , made our trip worth while.

Great Beach

By Renee M |

My husband & I wanted to try another shore town & decided on Virginia Beach. Our first stop in town was to get a new beach chair for me & we found a local hardware store that had the type of chair I was looking for. We spent 4 days on the beach & enjoyed it. The beach was clean & not too busy. We'll definitely visit again.

Sanctuary at False Cape - Condos. The unit we rented was great buuuuut we brought our dog , rental agent did not say it was against the rules . We were harassed by owners and management. So BEWARE ONLY OWNERS CAN HAVE THEIR DOGS.

Always a Great Time!

By kenobusek |

We visit Virginia Beach between Christmas and New Year's every year. There is always something to do, Someplace to go and fun to have. The weather is always perfect. THe water (Ocean) is a little chilly to cold but we still enjoy the wavers, hunting for sea glass and sea shells. We bring two teenage boys with us and they put their reservations in for the next year always before we leave. The Boardwalk Christmas Light display is out of this world and for $10 a car you can see an amazing one mile display of lights.

Stay Away!!!

By mmpk43 |

One of the most boring beach towns I have ever visited. This place can't hold a candle to Myrtle Beach. No entertainment at all. Nearly all the shops and stores close around 7:00 and 8:00. Nothing to do but walk along the boardwalk and listen to noise (rap music).

Other Dog Owners Not Keeping their Dogs away from my Leashed Dog

By Laura M |

I loved Virginia Beach for the most part. We chose to go before Memorial Day so we would not be restricted as to when we could bring our dog into the beach.

However our experience was tainted by other dog owners who allowed their unleashed dog to run up to our leashed dog. Our dog was attacked once. Thankfully it was brief and no one was hurt.

The locals here are aware that they don’t have to leash their dogs on the beach but don’t care about the rest of the rules of dogs in the beach - namely to not allow their dogs to run up to strangers and leashed dogs.

I’m bringing bear spray next time.

We visit every year!

By Ereina |

We absolutely love visiting every year. The beach is very wide and clean. The boardwalk is great for walking, riding scooters/bikes, running. Plenty for our entire family to enjoy!

Nice, clean beach with amenities

By wahoowa1213 |

Virginia Beach has really improved in the past few years. It is a very nice, free beach with chairs and umbrella rentals. There are clean restroom facilities and a nice wide sandy beach. At night in the summer, they have live on Atlantic - free music and entertainment all along Atlantic Avenue. A very fun festive street party.

Just walked over and looked at ocean

By ztd1989 |

We didn’t spend any time on the actual beach but we did walk over and look out into the ocean. The beach seemed clean but has very course sand. This beach has. A lot of activities close by it seemed as well. Not sure if I would spend time on the beach here but can see why others like it:

Great vacation spot!

By msfitz66 |

We had not visited since 2006. We had a great time! The beach is really clean and I LOVE how they have recycling containers at the beach and at every block on the boardwalk. I would like to see more recycling at the restaurants and bars. It appears all of the bottles and cans are just tossed in the trash. Virginia Beach is a walkable city. We got so much more exercise than we normally do on vacation because we walked everywhere. The Wave Trolley was nice as well when we wanted to go further. The views from balconies at the condos and hotels are lovely! In June the water was a little cold, but the beach was not very crowded.

A really good beach

By tbarkerRVA |

We found the oceanfront area near boardwalk and south of fishing pier very nice. Clean, lots of family, good lifeguards on duty. Waves were pretty active so lifeguards kept folks close in to be safe. The boardwalk is also nice and lots of biking opportunities.

Cleanest, nicest beach in the northeast / Mid-Atlantic

By Michael S |

Virginia Beach is by far the cleanest & nicest beach in the region. My family lives in the Poconos, PA & we would much rather make the longer drive to Virginia Beach than anywhere on the Jersey shore or Maryland.

Best beach on the East Coast.

By Lori B Davis |

We enjoy VA Beach the best because it is not as dangerous as some of the other tourist hot spots. I feel completely safe going walking or riding bikes. The beach is very clean and has plenty of trash receptacles. Not very many shells but a clean beach it is!

Nice but crowded.

By Sally S |

We went labor day weekend and because they were having an event we paid 10 dollars to park. It was super busy. All the stores had 50% off sales. The surf seemed a little rough. We stayed near the surfers only portion of the beach so it was a little less crowded. We walked down to the middle of the boardwalk and it wasnt possible to swim without bumping into someone. So we went back to our end by the inlet just short of the surfing only area.

Beautiful beach

By Shannon M |

We went to the beach for the day. Very nice beach with light brown soft sand. Good to walk on. They have mini boardwalks toward the shore every now and then so you can take a stroller and park it at the end closer to the water. They also have showers every so often to wash the sand off of your feet and body. It’s set up very good for families. The water was pretty warm this time of year too.

Great place!

By carol s |

Virginia Beach has one of the cleanest beaches & boardwalks. You can walk the boardwalk any time, & there's always lights & other people walking. If you want to exercise, there's no better place than the boardwalk. Lots of restaurants. Everything is walking distance.

Crowded. So many people smoking.

By R3020UBdb |

I wish I could rate this higher but it's very frustrating and hard to relax when most of the beach goers around you are smoking. I was looking forward to the salt air but instead it's polluted by cigarettes. This is the only beach in the Maryland/Delaware/Virginia area that I've noticed so many people smoking. Not for me or my children. Last visit here.... which is a shame since it's convenient to where I live.

Great Beach

By AMYM |

Beach was across from the hotel - check out the guy with the Chairs and umbrella - he'll hook you up. Get an umbrella for $10-15 if you forgot yours. Water was Luke warm, waves were huge. Kids had a blast. Just watched out for the jelly fish and small crabs in the water.

Clean, expansive beach, fine sand/no foot sprayers in sight

By 645marciaa |

Most of my former beach days have been in Florida. This is by far a cleaner beach - no jellyfish or other stingers on the beach - no flies or spiders . Maybe because I went mid-October? Easy to socially distance this time of year. The beach was delightful. My only complaint is that there were not body/foot sprayers to use to wash off sand. Maybe that's a seasonal thing, IDK

NEVER AGAIN!!

By Amanda L |

Never again! We were there for a day trip visiting family before heading to Williamsburg the next day. We were on the beach and no matter we sat or walked or looked, the sand was CLUTTERED in trash (masks, bottles, cans, broken boogie boards, broken chairs, ect…) It was like trash cans didn’t exist and they were in plain sight. We wanted somewhere new to explore and visit other than Ocean City, MD. It will NEVER be VA Beach again.

Trip at VA Beach in many years

By WildcatMom2014 |

we had not been to VA Beach since the late 80s. We had a great time. We will plan to visit again in September. Less crowded and enjoyed the Neptune Festival.

Everything we hoped for!

By chunter10 |

If you can stand the prices, we particularly enjoyed our beachfront room with a view of the ocean. Sunrises were stunning. The early morning commotion with workers picking up trash and smoothing the sand was a “little loud,” but not so bad that we would consider any other location. It was actually interesting to watch them, along with the early morning beachcombers, walkers and runners. The area between the boardwalk and the ocean is huge and CLEAN. We really appreciated the family atmosphere.

Love the beach but the planes are VERY loud

By Roberta H |

We
Love the wide beach which is kept immaculate. The boardwalk is wonderful as bikes are in a separate place from the walkers. The planes on non-stop and so loud they hurt your ears.

Best Beach

By Thomas B |

I’ve been to a ton of beaches from Hawaii to the East Coast and VB is one of the finest. We particularly like the Sandbridge area for its family friendly vibe and five miles of the cleanest, sparely populated beach anywhere

Pretty strong current

By mgnelu |

This was not my first time on Virginia Beach and I really enjoyed fighting the waves every time. The sand is soft and you hit rocks on the bottom very rarely. This was the first time I noticed a strong current pulling North. I am not sure if this is seasonal or just happened for the few days we were there. It was quite difficult to stay in place, especially for the kids. At some point we just gave up fighting the current and started drifting. Then got out of the water and walked on the beach back to where we entered the water.

One of the best beaches on the east coast!

By Tari |

My family and I have been vacationing on Virginia Beach for 25 years or more and it gets better with time. We love the hotel direct access to the beach and I have never experienced a boardwalk that is so vast with many activities for the entire family to enjoy.

I Always come back to VA Beach!

By Kingdomite |

I decided to visit Ocean City instead of VA beach because I go to VA every year. I found myself wishing I had stayed in VA! VA is light-years ahead of OC, the hotels are more upscale, there is something for everyone 5 dollar pizza or a $150 date night meal.

The palm trees, the grass, the trash being kept to a minimum and the fact that there is always a NEW hotel or NEW attraction. There aren't a zillion aggressive seagulls on the boardwalk because the trash isn't being maintained properly. The people are friendlier, they smile easier.

I cant wait to return.

Treasure of the Coast

By jpalkewicz |

A very fun and clean place to visit. Beach is well maintained. The boardwalk and bike paths area must see.

Family Beach

By smw1971931 |

Very clean beach, beautiful boardwalk without the typical souvenir shops, draws families, not a party beach

Yearly tradition

By EFM217 |

Every year, my family and I take the trip to Virginia Beach. Honestly, we never really went beyond ATLANTIC Ave, with the exception of a few stores, restaurants, and a doctor! Overall, Virginia Beach is very clean and safe. It has a lot of things to do, but is great to just go to the beach and veg. The prices of restaurants can be a bit pricey, but it is a tourist area!

beautiful

By ladyslade |

the boardwalk was awesome the stores are great the water was cold but loved every bit of my stay i will be back

Why is this beach so famous?

By Danuza |

Except for some nice restaurants and a nice free shower on the sidewalk, there is not much to appreciate here. The stores on the fisherman boardwalk were nice. That might be the only good thing now that the amusement park is not open. They charge $2 to get through and see the view (basically the same view you can see from the beach). The sand was super dirty and there was no shade anywhere. No trees, umbrellas to rent, nothing! Not safe for young children and super hard to find parking, unless you pay $20. I am only giving 3 stars because of the entertainment around the shore line and free showers. For the beach itself I would give one star.

Great Beach!

By Scomus11 |

Enjoy the beach, surf and Sun! DQ right at 17th Street. Lots of restaurants and tacky shops. Boardwalk stretches from 5th Street to at least 38th Street. Lots of walkers, runners and bicyclists.

A wonderful seaside rendezvous.

By Terry C |

We went to the beach during summer 2025, so it was understandably hot. There was a slight breeze coming in, so it made it ok. There are dual and family sized bikes that you can rent. People are so accommodating and courteous when you are walking with a quad cane. People literally opened doors for me and held it until I was safely through.

The water is warm between 11:30 a.m. through 1 p.m. lots of people on the beach, but there are public toilets, and the boardwalk is big and wide enough for dual and family bikes. Lots of shops and restaurants along the boardwalk.

If you are eating in one of the restaurants, they can give you a parking pass for 1 1/2 hours. There is a lot of paid parking. But you can also park free along 24th Street from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

If you are in the area, you have got to stop by!

We had a blast

By robert b |

The only reason I didn't give it a 5 was parking was limited we did find a place right across from Neptune park $15 for 10-5pm parking. Restrooms right across the street and behind those is the statue and the beach.
Life guards were on duty and let you have fun but would call you back in if you started to go to far out.
The beach was clean and we'll kept.
The US fighter plans helicopters and boats regularly coming by made for a cool view.
We even saw dolphins from the boardwalk.
The water was chilly but after a few minutes it was fine.
Bring a shade a cooler of drinks and food and make a day of it cheap fun for those that love the water.

An adventure in parking

By Reindrop |

As a Great Neck resident I seldom adventure to the northern beach front unless I am dining at a restaurant there. The parking issues along the north end are frustrating. Homes will “claim” whole sections of street parking by creating oversized driveways to their homes and put illegal signs prohibiting parking, or large planters street side etc. The problem is, the city does not enforce these violations and so there is little chance of knowing where it is ok to park. Like so many I circle a bit, then go back home.

Awesome

By Michelle W |

The beach is very clean. They keep trash out of the sand. The sand is almost powdery. I was amazed at the cleanliness at the beach and boardwalk. There are many life guard stations throughout.

Pleasant vacay destination

By jln1992 |

Camped outside of downtown Virginia Beach for one week which was long enough to see and do all the attrations in the area. Checked out the beach, aquarium, zoo, lighthouse, pier and other attractions.

Beach was clean and well kept. Not alot of broken shells all over the place on your walk down to the water which was nice. A little crowded, but expected as any other beach. Life guards on duty which was a plus, shows concern for safety. Feet washing stations. Only downfall was porta potties instead of public restrooms and as far as finding public restrooms on Atlantic Avenue while shopping, good luck. Most places either don't have public restrooms or have signs stating you can only use their bathrooms If you are a paying customer.

As for shopping, Atlantic Avenue has a lot of shops even though some are chain stores and you find the same thing in each one. There are some stores that are inexpensive and you can find other items than you find in the chain stores.

And if you like entertainment they have arcades and other familiy entertainment. While I was there the arcades were not the greatest as some were only half open or very small arcades. They have fun land, mini golf and water parks.

I would say Virginia Beach is a smaller version of OCMD, OCNJ, Wildwood, Rehobeth. Nice place just scaled down a little compared to some of the other beaches I have visited.

Year round beach fun

By livingtinybig |

With a positive yet mild intensity, VA beach
experience was truly remarkable. The sandy shores were clean and well-maintained, providing the perfect relaxation point. It is cold weather beach so we didn't go in the water. There were few surfers, though. Given the wonderful time we had, overall, it was peaceful beach day.
I definitely recommend this beach for its great
experience any time of the season.

One of the best beaches in Virginia

By NVLAAL |

We visited Virginia Beach after visiting Buckroe beach the day before and Virginia Beach is definitely better. It wasn’t as crazy and Virginia Beach was much nicer. Although more touristy, the surrounding area had plenty of bars and restaurants. The waves were bigger here which was fun for older kids but made it harder to get in the water with the younger ones. Definitely the best beach I’ve been to in Virginia though.

Great experience

By Doug B |

Great waves. Great people watching. Great surf watching. Very clean. Attentive life guards. Well maintained and managed

Visiting Va beach again!

By Jeff S. |

Went to VA beach 30 years ago on our honeymoon and decided to relive the memories with a reunion visit for our anniversary. VA Beach has a lot to offer. The beach is well kept and large. Lots of chain style hotels more than independent ones and condos. Large 3mile long concrete boardwalk is definitely a plus, we brought our bikes, but there are lots of rentals around. Fishing pier was fun to watch from our hotel balcony. We were there on Columbus Day weekend and it was kind of slow. Some people but definitely not the large crowds in summer. Shops and restaurants were open but many closed early. Played golf, took a brunch cruise, and played on the beach. Fun vacation. Not as much nightlife, shows, places to go as some other popular beach towns, but plenty to do.

Wonderful visit!! Stayed an extra day!!

By Bobbie W |

Only planned on visiting for one evening after doing some tours in the Norfolk area - but once we saw the beautiful ocean and super clean beach area — we booked another night!! When I want a beach town - this is now my go to.....sorry Daytona....

Best beach on the East Coast

By Bigfoot62 |

It is not a Pacific Ocean beach, but it is a very pleasant beach. Virginia Beach is probably the best East Coast beach based on my experience with a great deal of beaches on the Atlantic Seaboard.

Nice beach but seems to be trending downwards

By Malarky1212 |

Love the Virginia Beach area. Huge nice beach, ocean is great with just the right amount of waves. Have been coming down twice a year for 3 years now. Always lots of pot smoke but mostly just ignore it.
What I can’t ignore is the growing amount of inconsiderate people who set up their large tents literally on top of you and then blare their 3 foot “portable” speaker.
I’m all for people listening to music on the beach but it should be at a respectable level so you’re not disturbing others. Unfortunately that’s not what you get here anymore.
I wish they would make some rules governing volume or make areas of beach “speaker free”

So Beutifull and Clean.

By siglerk76 |

Loved it. It was clean, nice and the kids loved it. Played in the sand all day long and had a blast!
Definitely recommended to all who are coming to VB ( is there any other reason?).

Good Off-season Visit

By Bob L |

We spent a day going up and down the streets (Pacific and Atlantic) visited the Vibe district. Walked and drove to visit all the small art opportunities. It was a great time when you dont have to worry about parking, lines, other people. February is wonderful if you arent in it for swimming or sun bathing.

Fun in the sun

By Rebecca S |

My husband three children and I spent a few day's here on the beach. We really enjoyed the waves crashing into us. The beach was clean and doesn't close so if you really want to take a dip in under the moonlight feel free! After the kids would go to sleep our oldest would stay back at the room and my husband and I would stroll along the edge of the beach for a while. So relaxing!

YUK! This was the dirtiest beach i have ever seen.

By BRBE001 |

There is a great sandy area you walk through and then go over a pipe that has sand on it to go onto the "beach" area. YUK!!! it was literally wall to wall people and very little area to the beach and you couldn't see the beach for tents - literally tents of people. Felt disgusting.

Love this beach

By bornin1954 |

Great for couples or families. Life guards on duty and the beach is clean. Love the boardwalk as you can stroll along the beach without the sand. Great place to visit.

Vacation

By Chefsabina719 |

As Always its a pleasure to Enjoy the ocean. The life guards were observant and helpful. the shore was clean and well kept.

Roomy Beach- Virginia Beach

By Selfsb |

Virginia Beach is a very large beach able to accommodate many people. It is a very clean beach, with trash cans and recycle cans every so many feet. Life guards are ready to help and you can rent the lounge chairs and umbrellas daily. Family friendly beach. It also have public restrooms with attendants in them every so many blocks. Very nice place to vacation.

It was OK for an East coast beach

By John P |

Not as peaceful and relaxing as I was expecting. A little crowded I thought and not a great variety of shops and the like. The military air traffic was pretty cool at first, but later became a loud annoyance since it is almost constant.

Beautiful beaches. Great time of the year to visit. Not very crowded, weather still nice. Some places closed, but not an issue.

VA trip Hilton Garden Inn Oceanfront Sherita

By Rita R |

The Hotel Garden Inn was awesome comfy large room. Excellent staff at the front desk. But I will put the spotlight on the valee services those guys were quick and professional. One gentleman by the name of Ronnie helpful and very knowledgeable I appreciate the service. And upon my return I will surely return to this hotel and will gladly refer this hotel.

Vacation.

By Dan F |

Nice, clean, family friendly. Lots of activities for families within walking distance. Some things unavailable due to Covid pandemic.

Family Vacay

By Melanie B |

Always a fun place to visit. We were able to social distance on the beach in the middle of the week, no problem. The beach was clean and well maintained. And now they have a playground ON the beach, it was the cutest thing! The foot and shower space to clean off when you come off of the beach is fabulous. I love the boardwalk and the separate bike path!

Virginia is a very nice beach

By John L |

We moved to Virginia Beach 14 months ago North End 81st str. and so far mostly good, for me nicer in the winter for obvious reasons, noise, trash.
The noise from motorcycles and very loud mufflers, we are sort of getting used to it.
The complete disrespect with out of towners trashing the beach particulalry the young folks drinking and leaving everything on beach, usually more partying on beach at night. Fireworks, nice but big mess left behind, and I find if good hearted people like myself and others didn't clean up who does?

Our Favorite Family Vacation

By Eugene F |

Recently visited the week of August 12 with family and friends. We try to come every year. We always stay at a beach hotel with an ocean view and direct access to the beach. We love the sunrise over the ocean, the family -friendly atmosphere and activities on the boardwalk. We love the restaurants in the area and attractions and shopping on the strip. No complaints! One suggestion would be to have disability scooters for rent near the beaches. I have osteoarthritis in my knee and I tried to rent a scooter from a rental company for a month in advance and they were all booked!

Virginia beach

By moonbeamster |

We actually went to the monster trucks on the beach which was absolutely awesome fun great family day out then a couple of days passed sun was out so to the beach for just s lazy day so much room sea was cool but nice enough it's a really lovely place to go out for a picnic or one of thd restaurants close by awesome .

Its your average beach

By TLJade |

Too many panhandlers for us! We live in the area and we really have to make our out of town guests aware of all the begging and panhandling that occurs here. Don't even get me started on the public bathrooms that they hang out in. VB really needs to get a handle on this. I am afraid to take my kids in there we have had several bad experiences where when you say NO they keep bugging you. I had one woman bagging on the stall door while I was going to the bathroom. Beach is nice and there are all the "beach" stores and restaurants you would expect. I still prefer Delaware over VB.

Va beach smells like Marijuana

By Getaway11082099538 |

Beach was clean, but over crowded. The whole area smells like weed constantly, everywhere. I don't care that people smoke, however I don't and after 3 days of smelling it I find it offensive. I will not be returning. My family will look for a more private beach area that is less crowded.

Clean and uncrowded

By Lindsay G |

The beach was uncrowded and clean. Other than the fact that the police were bothering people because of covid, it was nice. We had a fishing pole in the water so they left us alone.

2019 Vacation

Clean Beach
Lifeguards were on site
Nice Boardwalk and Bike path
Nice town not to crowded when we were there
Lots of things to do

Beautiful and clean

By WeezieL |

It's a beautiful and clean beach. The water is warm but the winds can be ferocious!! Second stay in VA Beach. Lifeguards on duty 9-5 or 6. A lot of them too. Please pay attention to your kids when there are big waves!

Laid back and easy

By TannyWand |

Virginia Beach is Laid back and mostly quiet place to vacation. The beach has no waves and definitely needs to clean the sand. It's definitely overcrowded with a fishy smell.

Beautiful, Clean Well Attended Beach

By A.Traveler |

Virginia Beach is a very clean, family friendly area. The Oceanfront has lots to offer in the way of entertainment, such as stages, with different types of music being played. There are nice restaurants and bars all within walking distance from the 3 miles of Boardwalk. They also have a huge , ADA compliant playground.

Clean and People Behave

I have been here about 5 years ago and it was a hot mess. But during the Covid people kept apart and were respectful to distancing from other people. I felt safe.

Amazing!

Wasn't a planned experience & whoa baby ! My family & myself truly blown away from ocean, waves, affordability, & most of all FUN! Waves were amazing ,parking cheap ($5) , family memories = PRICELESS!

Relaxing

By Blanca R |

I was here for a week with most of our senior class on their senior trip. The beach is beautiful. There is a small drop about two feet in. A few feet out there is a sand dune. The water was a bit chilly in May but once you acclimate to it you are fine. The water was so clear. The sand was nice and clean. I Would definitely recommend a visit.

Highly recommend

By awesomnesssam |

Virginia Beach is an amazing place, it’s one of the few beaches I like. Clean water with no algae. Parasailing, motor sports and nice board walk and hotel by the beach. Enjoyed better than Florida or some of the east and west coast beaches

Beautiful Beach

By Judy from NC |

The water was cold but to be expected in April. Beach was hilly but still beautiful and loads of fun with the big waves coming in.

Fun Atmosphere

By fahyth2018 |

Love Virginia Beach! The boardwalk is beautiful and the bike paths are awesome! The only downfall to the view is the construction on the beach. Somewhat of an eyesore, but I know its only temporary so still giving it 5 stars.

Great Beach on East Coast

By Jason |

Great beach for vacationing with family and friends. So much to do with a massive boardwalk which has plenty of restaurants/bars and lots of shopping. Definitely recommend Virginia Beach when visiting Virginia or when on the East Coast

Wonderful getaway

By Michael W |

Well maintained beaches. Great local food and fun. A variety of places to stay. Many activities to do.

Excellent beach but COVID-19 Corona Virus

By Hiwad |

Disappointed. Not enough mask wearing or social distancing on the beach, boardwalk, hotels, restaurants, stores. There are clear signs and guidelines everywhere but many people seem to ignore them. There is nothing more the Virginia Beach area can do other than use force for virus guidelines. The virus cases and hospitalization current daily rates are higher in Virginia Beach than in other parts of Virginia. Look it up yourself. This beach destination is acting like a virus spreading mechanism unfortunately. It is not the fault of Virginia Beach. I would not bring my family here or anywhere similar due to the COVID-19 Corona virus. Also, the hotel lobbies and elevators are crowded and not enough mask wearing. The nice beach stores and restaurants are the same. I left Virginia Beach early. It’s a pity because it’s one of the best beaches I’ve ever seen, but I could not comfortably enjoy it. The only exception is if a solo person leaves the car and goes directly to the beach sand and sits or swims away from other people. But is this normal? I would also question going to other similar destinations for the same reasons.

CLEAN CITY

By sctrice |

We have traveled to numerous beaches on the east coast and VA beach has to be one of the most clean cities. Their parking system is easy and you can add time while seated at a restaurant, shopping or on the beach! All the visitors are friendly and have polite drivers that allow others to enter the road from side streets, etc. No aggressive drivers seen on this trip! I can't say enough about how positive our trip was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyone wore masks when it applied!

clean and not too crowded

By ssusanw210 |

Spent a week there with my older teens. The south end has lots to do, the north end with some more expensive hotels is quieter. We did see some homeless people but did not feel threatened or uneasy. There was police presence and we felt safe at night. Favorite part is the street performers paid by the city. We saw a mini circus, countless musicians, balloon animal artists, jugglers, etc. Always something new. Love the "Bird" scooters for rent. Pick them up and drop off anywhere near Atlantic. If visiting between July - Aug 2019, they are rebuilding the beach in 1000 ft sections working north. On July 10 they were around 25th st. You cannot go to the beach in this area with the equipment.

Va Beach

By Diane M |

The beach is well maintained and they are currently working on widening it so some construction happening. At night you can see the construction ships pumping in the sand.

Clean Beach!!

By Carmien R |

It's been over 15 years and the one thing I remembered was the beaches were the CLEANEST I've ever been too! This time didn't dissapoint and I've been to many beaches on the East/West Coast and even some Carribean!! Love It and will return!!

Virginia Beach

By Rosemary C |

Have the Navy Jets fly at specific times, not from 8am to almost 11pm during the week. I thought it was cool for the first few fly overs, but damn. It is so loud and difficult to enjoy the ocean view and can't relax on the beach and read a book. Don't bother trying to talk, you can't hear the person next to you. If I knew about how loud the jets were, I would have gone to Myrtle Beach or Florida.

VB has changed for the.worse.

By John R |

Complete.fail. Rampant drug use. Homeless people sleeping on the boardwalk. Many restaurants are closed and replaced with drug paraphernalia.stores and seedy bars.

One of the Cleanest of Beaches on the Atlantic

By Bob and Joan |

Visited the area in early October, 2019 and woke up early each morning to view the most beautiful sunrises and dolphins splashing 20 yards offshore. I was quite impressed with the well groomed beach area in front of our stay at the Hampton Inn North. A large crew were raking, and manicuring the sands leading to the ocean. The beach area is rather flat and easy to get to, right off the boardwalk. Easy to navigate, even a 70 year old couple.

Very Beautiful and Clean Beach

By RLWOrangePark |

This is a very long and wide beach which is separated from the many hotels and restaurants that line it by a very wide and attractive concrete boardwalk. Very easy and pleasant to walk. While we were there they had a big Neptune Festival going on. Huge crowds taking advantage of the many food stalls, art exhibits and sand sculptures. They also had a very large volleyball areas set up on the beach for a Virginia Volleyball Tournament. Everything was very well put together and very clean. The beach itself is also very well maintained with lots of well-placed trash and recycling containers (that were actually emptied daily) and a tractor going by each morning to clean and rake the beach sand.

Our favorite destination

By FElizabeth |

The beach is very big, well kept and is very family friendly. The sand is always clean and nice to walk on.

Beautiful beach

By fishinjim65 |

The city does a great job keeping the beach and boardwalk clean and safe. We felt comfortable there. A few homeless people that are kind of depressing, but they didn’t approach us.

Our stay at VA Beach

By Linda Z |

This was our first trip to VA Beach since 2018! It was wonderful - refreshing and relaxing. We stayed at the Hilton Oceanfront Hotel and it was wonderful! The staff is so nice and helpful and the rooms are sooo clean!
The beach is well kept and lovely. The free street entertainment is high quality. And it is so family oriented!

Plenty of space and great sand.

By Tiziano D |

This beach is enormous and it's quite funny how it can be filled to the brink anyway on weekends! The sand is soft and the beach is kept immaculate by the City staff. The boardwalk makes it even more attractive. The water is not too deep for quite a long stretch and allows for safe bathing.

Nice wide clean beach

By Mary F |

Nice wide clean beach. Pretty steep slope to the water. Beach umbrellas and chairs readily available for rent.

Very family friendly

By Don N |

Very good activities during summertime . Convenient locations to all attractions A lot of very good restaurants conveniently located.

Disappointed

By Jen C |

Overcrowded dirty beach. I saw cigerette butts every couple steps. No shells on the beach to collect. No bathrooms or changing rooms only a few portal potties. Every store said no public bathrooms. Similar stores with same stuff and junky food along the street. Hotels are very expensive. Sandbridge was much cleaner and not crowded..still no bathrooms to change. Not going back.

Clean, family friendly beaxh

By Jen K |

Virginia Beach is a great getaway for our family. Due to Covid-19, there were not many people. But those that were there set up their things much further than 6 ft apart (please note that I was there on a Thursday and Friday, and both days were overcast). The beach was so clean and I NEVER saw any trash laying about. There is also plenty of plaques along the boardwalk to read and memorials to see. Also, please note that there isn’t many shops or restaurants along the actual boardwalk, they are located off of Route 60. There are some restaurants along the boardwalk attached to restaurants.

Nice Clean well Maintained Beaches overrun by Mexicans!!!

By jabiii64 |

The beaches are best early in the morning before the umbrella cities of Mexican families start over taking the beach and leaving a pile of trash and waste in their wake! I use to come to VB to relax and get away from it all but not anymore it's a out of control place with little to no police presence and apparently anything goes here!!!

Will return

By JudyH2007 |

We have never been here, but really want to return. Was really nice having an ocean view. We were really lucky to see dolphins!!! I have been waiting a long time for that. Made my day. You can walk to alot of places from shops, food, mimi Mart. A lot of fighter jets during the day. Took a couple days to get used to the noise. Took a sunset dinner cruise, toured the battleship. So much to do. The beach is long and wide. Not good for shelling. You can rent chairs and umbrellas. A lot of people were here. We had good weather, which made it nicer. Some nice restaurants too. We will return!

Ok

By Donald F |

Virginia Beach is similar to many other resorts - busy - lots to do - noisy. If that’s what you’re looking for you’ll not be disappointed.

Great Fall Weekend!

By Tonya H |

We had a fabulous time and have already booked our stay for next year! The beach is clean and quiet and there is plenty to do. We had gorgeous weather on our Fall weekend!

Sand!

By DAVID U |

The beach is long long long and beautiful yellow sand. It has a shallow walk into the ocean and is great for swimming.

warm water , clean beach

By Matt Marshall |

No social distancing but the water was warm and the beach was clean for the most part .Some people had beer bottles on the beach so be careful when you walk , could be glass in the sand

LOTS of souvenir shops

By Mark D |

As one would expect in any beach town, there are countless boardwalk-type attractions, including believe it or nots and cheap tourist retail shops. Having said that, there are also plenty of places to eat, ranging from cheap stands to expensive bars. If you like miniature golf, there are a couple of those a block away as well.

Well maintained beach, dog friendly

By Dale S |

We walk along the beach and enjoy the edge of the ocean. It is kept clean and raked as needed . It is all sand and is dog friendly

One of our Favorites

By John M |

The beach is spacious and great for kids. They can shell and play in the surf. People were friendly and it was a relaxing place

Great beach!

By zanner |

This is a very nice beach to just relax on or enjoy the waves. Lifeguards are present and very watchful. The boardwalk next to it has plenty of activity as well and places to go grab some food to bring back to your spot.

Not worth it.

By Nina L |

I won’t be back. I haven’t been to Virginia Beach in decades. While the beach itself is beautiful, there is nothing unique here. Most of the tourist stores are the same ripoff crap. The food was decent but not worth the price. If you are traveling with kids or teens, don’t walk at night below 27th Street on Atlantic. As a whole experience, every day and night people are openly smoking marijuana. It’s annoying.

Family wedding

By Simmie W |

Beautiful, quiet section of the beach. The sand was soft and warm you have to warm up to the water lol. It was just a pleasure to relax in the sun with friends and family.

Great family beach

By ArmyMom |

Overall great place. The city employees who manage the beach do a phenomenal job of dealing with trash - plenty of receptacles so honestly saw very little trash on the beach which may also be related to lack of crowds - but they were up and down the beach emptying the trash. Lifeguards are super responsive as we watched them alert a few times for folks swimming when the water was dangerous. Plenty of sand to spread out and stay away from everyone else. Weather in August was stormy but that isn’t VA Beach’s fault! The aquarium was smaller than expected but still entertaining to the kids and perfect on a wet day. They had a water park but for the price you really need to stay ALL day to make it worthwhile. Plenty of shopping, mini golf, and other options in and around the area. Overall great place. Definitely will plan another visit.

A great long wide sandy beach

By GenotheViking |

What a great long sandy beach for walking or loafing. Lots to see here including the great fishing pier. Not crowded in the off season. great waves. Everything one needs is close by. Lots of paid parking available.

A typical mid-Atlantic beach town

By Rob |

Full disclosure - I grew up on the West coast of Florida, so I'm used to white powdery sand. If that's what you're looking for, Virginia Beach ain't the place - you'll need to head South. Sure, it's nice being on the ocean, but the beach just isn't comparable to other places. That being said ,there are bright spots - it's on the ocean, so there's nice wave action. It's clean and seems to be well-maintained.The boardwalk (between the hotels and the beach) is wide and well-maintained. The main street is a mixture of charming and seedy that you see in a lot of beach towns. Plenty of places to stay, eat, and park (municipal parking is like $10 for non-residents).

Beautiful Beach

By elaine c |

This was our first time here. It was pretty. We had plenty of room to “social distance”. We could walk a long way on the beach or boardwalk. They had lifeguards all day. You could rent chairs, umbrellas and sun shades.

vacation

By lorimbs |

Very clean. We saw them rake the beach early every morning. Plenty of space for people. Great walking along the water.

Crime experience unfortunately

By MominOC |

this is more about the town not necessarily about "on the beach". We experienced a broken into car with items stolen. Broke windows on the rental car and popped the trunk and stole a backpack. So...be careful and aware.

Nice town

By Paul C |

I really like Virginia Beach but I always go off season.
I find it too crazy busy with tourists during the summer.
Sure off season I’m not jumping in the water at the beach but I can walk down the beach in peace. I can get into restaurants without waiting on line with a reservation.
It’s really enjoyable but please don’t come then and make it a crowd.

Beautiful

By SpyderWitch |

Large beach. Appeared very clean. We were there during off-season; but it was still great to walk along the beach.

Best on the east coast

By RRDC2016 |

wide, open, lovely. Plenty of room, further north the better. beach kept very clean. we return at least once a year.

Lots of beach and sand

By high valley |

I know the beach here has been coming and going. The beachfront here is the Goose that makes the golden egg. Thanks for the steady and solid beach replenishment here. It is worth every penny! I hope it rewards the leadership for having a great beach with some room to enjoy the coast. We certainly will return.

Nice boardwalk, lots to do, but high waves and rough water

By BeccaB |

This was our first trip to Virginia Beach. We went there after a trip to Williamsburg. The beach was very crowded but not unlike most beaches in the summer months. The beach was clean. The water was cold and rough. The waves were high and I would not recommend this beach for young children. There were many lifeguards though and they were making sure that people did not venture very far from the shore. The beach is wide and the boardwalk was nice. Many free events along the boardwalk. Bike rentals available at many locations and the boardwalk is perfect for that purpose. Overall we had a good visit but not sure that we will go back.

Great weekend getaway

By melodytaylor81 |

Due to pandemic was unable to enjoy the full beach, but it is awesome whenever I go, its only a 2 hour drive for me, and its worth every second of it

Beautiful

By CountryGurlOnTheGo |

The beach is gorgeous and very clean. Also, there is an entrance/exit to the sand from the boardwalk that corresponds with each city block. These exits have the street number chiseled in the cement adjacent to the stairs. In other words, it's impossible to lose your location after a long day of fun in the sun. Lol

Beautiful Weather at Virginia Beach a awesome expierence!

By Expedition499694 |

I was suprised they happened to have a 2 day free funk fest. I enjoyed the beach it was rough water, and sand was slanted down not even, therefore first wave to hit you i watched people falling. They were still having fun. I did not fall. I standed in the beggining, where all kids were at. I cannot swim. I got some good sun. I enjoyed all the food. I went to the stores. I always buy a hoodie, whenever we are on vacation. We had all beautiful days over there. We stayed at Costa Azul. Full Breakfast was included. Pool had a shallow end 8 ft it was great for all that can swim, it was divided by rope so you know what area to go in that meets your needs.

I actually stayed at hotel one day, and used their gym, pool, and pool. They had beach towels, loungers, and chairs.

I always go to the carribean, but i went twice this year, and due to weather, and issues with flights. We did a road trip. A beach is a beach, and i had a great time in Virginia Beach.

Very nice beach

By Lauren S |

The water, The beaches were clean and had plenty of lifeguards. It is great that they are free (no beach tags required). Not too crowded end of June. Surprised to see more pigeons than seagulls but they were actually less annoying so that’s a plus. Pigeons don’t squawk and try to steal food from you. There were barely any seashells at all. That was strange. The water was nice. Not too rough but plenty of big waves for jumping. Not great for boogie boards. There were a lot of small jelly-like creatures in the water which I believe are called salps. They were harmless, just felt weird. Overall, above average beaches for beauty, warm enough water, and cleanliness.

Very clean & well maintaned

By harryatkck |

My wife & I stayed overnight in a hotel overlooking the beach so we were able to observe it late in the day & early in the morning. We walked on he beach late in the day & observed that the sand was very clean & there were trash bins at numerous spots. There are several public access points, so there were quite a few people on the beach late in the day. The next morning we watched tractors & other heavy equipment clean the beach & put it in pristine condition for the day. If you love the ocean, come here.

First time visit

By Paulette K |

This was our first time visiting Virginia Beach! Very clean! We were a little bunned at th lack of shells, but the beautiful sunrises made up for it! If you planning on staying they e tore day het there early before the umbrellas start taking over. We were able to find small areas for the 2 if is, but if you are with a larger group be prepared for limited space. There are very few quick food options on the beach, so bring your snacks/lunch with you.

89th Street hideaway

By Renae n |

This is a great public spot off the main hub. Located near the military base. Great public wooden walkway through trees. Sand dunes, volleyball, perfect spot for laying in the sun without the crowds from oceanfront. Locals are not real keen on public being there, parking is a hassle but free. The walkway is hidden from view. You really have to search to find this gem of an area. No public bathroom, no lifeguard.

Nice beach

By Mary P |

We went to Virginia beach for a long weekend. We really enjoyed the beach. It's very pretty and clean. Really liked the walking and bike path.

Typical resort/beach town

By EFW2014 |

Lots of the same kinda shops selling the same stuff up and down the avenue. The boardwalk is nice, it’s great that bikers have separate lanes. There is no free parking! $2.05 an hour metered max of 3 hours, lots are either $5 $7 or $10.

My Favorite Beach

By Just_Me_Bernie |

Always a good time at Virginia Beach. It's clean and relaxing, very popular like most beaches, plenty of fun things to do.

Nice Beach

By Gayle E |

Not many people here and the beach is pretty good. Beach access often and facilities available all along the beach because there are restaurants everywhere. There are jets flying over frequently due to the navy presence. But that is the sound of freedom!

Visits to VA Beach only!

By Anony |

Pros: The Beaches, Much to see & do, Close to Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Newport News, Suffolk…, Some great stores & Wonderful Libraries!
Great to explore!

Cons: Some fast impatient drivers, cityish/urbanish feel, good hotels all price ranges,

Wouldn’t live here but wonderful to visit!

Vacation

By Connie P |

Great trip for vacation. Visited ocean Breeze Water park and the air and space museum in Hampton. Definitely at trip to remember.

Unpleasant

By JDAutoTints |

There is an Navy Airforce base stationed here! It makes for very uncomfortable noises that are very loud and similar to the sound of a missle strike! This is 24 hours 7 days a week and it dove me nuts! Had i known i would not have stayed here! Its 10 mins from my hotel

Big, broad, and clean. Dog friendly.

By GRSHonolulu |

Great beach. Clean and dog friendly. Not many amenities beyond the boardwalk, but a good place for families.

Family friendly beach fun

By Mike J |

The beach itself is nice, not too far to walk to the water but ample space, gets busy but wasn’t overcrowded. It is groomed and kept clean, waves a little rough at times when we were there but kids had fun with boogie boarding. There is also a section just for surfers on the southern end which is cool. The area overall was very family friendly, lots of activities, music and art, food and spirits, etc. Great vacation spot.

I see old people

By Buckminister B |

Nice clean beach if you like old people and chain hotels. The hotels are extremely overpriced. You could easily have a luxury vacation in Mexico for the price the price with better beaches. Sandbridge or North beach is much better.

Beautiful beach

By Jhon |

Absolutely a beautiful beach that can be enjoyed by families and friends. The beach is clean and the area has a lot of activities to enjoy.

Family Vacation

By Eileen V |

The beaches are beautiful and well kept. Travel to the North End for a quieter beach experience away from the hotels. The city is safe and clean with much to do. The City does however have a major homeless and vagrant problem. Some are quite aggressive and confrontational.

Vacation 2020

By partygirl602 |

One of my favorite places in the world. I love the atmosphere. I love the restaurants. I love the vibe. Walking from store to store. Ice cream on every corner. Great place.

Clean brach

By Felicia H |

Clean beach and sand is well maintained. Ppl social distanced and didn’t leave trash out. Lifeguards on duty were attentive to ppl in water.

Beautiful beach, warm ocean water

By Traveler8901 |

It was our first time to the ocean. Beach was crowded but not terrible. We didn't see any of the garbage other reviewers talk about. Steep slope into the water with lifeguards on duty. Water was warmer than we anticipated which was great! Sand is hard to get off afterwards. One area in front of Best Western Sandcastle hotel with shower head and foot sprayer. Was not prepared for the noise of the navy jets being sent out over the ocean every 10-20 minutes. Super loud

It's a beach

By Witty name |

I wouldn't go on my own dime. It's a urban cesspool on the ocean. Panhandlers everywhere and even worse, hipsters

Clean but busy beach

By YorkTravelGirl |

My friends and I went to Virginia Beach for a long girls' weekend recently and were impressed with the cleanliness of the beach! It was exceptionally crowded while we were there, and the waves were rough and high. But that didn't seem to bother anyone. We had a great time, and the hard-working lifeguards were busy doing their job, keeping people from straying too far in the rough waves.

Day and Night

By AndyRay |

We went to the beach and found the water warmer than any California beach. Great Sand. Porta potties, and a few fresh water showers. Went back later at night, after 10, and was a little sketchy, but not bad.

Huge place stretches for a long while

By riva9129 |

So currently staying at the VBeach Hilton Oceanfront which is good. The beaches here are huge..stretching for a long while and very wide.
Clean beaches, safe, a lil surf here and there. Definitely a family friendly place.
Theres a "boardwalk" that's actually concrete but its neat. Great place to run or walk. A ton of typical beach stores restaurants..ton of hotels and motels. All good.

Homeless abound

By pixiekansas |

We had scheduled ten days beachfront at Virginia Beach. We left after three days. Homeless all over the boardwalk daily, asking for food, cigarettes, money. At night they bunk down in the doorways of the businesses across from the beach. We were heckled by a homeless man on a bench by the Neptune statue and by another at the fishing pier. We were pestered by Walgreens and as we walked over to CP Shuckers for supper (twice). Our final straw was when we sat eating our lunch out on the boardwalk, watched by a young homeless man. When we threw away our trash, he dug it out, ate our leftovers, drank our leftover soda. It was so sad and stressful to witness this on our vacation. We do not downplay the plight of these people, but we needed to have some stress free vacation time. We took our tourist dollars to Williamsburg and the Outer Banks instead. Wake up, Virginia Beach, you have a real problem. Help find a solution for these people.

Great summer outing, even during Covid-19

By Sevenohio |

The beach itself is pristine, no seaweed or sharp rocks, waves are calm and it’s a pretty large area with lifeguards at the very station diligently keeping watch. The area is uncrowded so it’s very possible to social distancing comfortably.

However on the boardwalk , in the hotels , shops and restaurants not many tourists are adhering to mask wearing or social distancing

Great Visit

By Sanjeev_Sharma |

Neat and clean. Well maintained

Enjoy the view and water here. It is just next to the boardwalk

Also has a pier for fishing

Amazing Place

By Ashley Lakose |

We took our kids to the ocean for the first time for a birthday. They absolutely loved the beach and the amenities and options of things to do. We did a dolphin tour and it was well worth it. Loved it all

What Can I Say

By Timmy Dreams |

Well there’s some incredible homes on the right side of the road but the Beach is just ok let me tell you why the beach sand is brown and course that in turn makes the water brown the waves churn it up, it’s really a shame they have this sand they should dig it up and pump in some white powder sand! I give them props for allowing dogs on the beach am/ pm. Down town is like philly with a beach but what this place really gets a negative is meter parking, It’s not that great to want to visit and every time you go somewhere your paying for parking. It Don’t make you want to come back! More Dog Friendly Places to stay are needed that are clean! For God Sake We Love Our Pets!

Beautiful

By Carmen B |

Nice, clean & big beach. Great place to be for the celebration of the 4th of July. We come here every year. Since 2014

Disgusting

By R F |

A total dump, avoid at all costs. Not worth it. Weed everywhere. Shady people up and down Atlantic Ave. Vacation elsewhere.

Friendly East Coast Beach

By hvu2000 |

We went out to VA beach for the annual East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC). The weather was nice and not so warm during the last two days of the event. The beach was very clean and with walking distance to rest rooms, drinking water and public shower. There are many people visited the beach and attending this annual event. There are so many good places for lunch and dinner. Highly recommended.

Wow, the town and the beach are huge!

By Annaline |

I was impressed by the size of the town and the beach....enormously large/long. A lot of different restaurants. A lot of free parking near the beaches. Great for families and group pf firends.

Beautiful

By BillandKrisReap |

Clean relaxing well maintained!! No litter Excellent place to walk swim and visit! Highly recommend!

Great place to enjoy and search

By Linda B |

We loved all the murals that you can see between Atlantic and Pacific. There were statues along the boardwalk, had to look for some. Neptune was pretty easy to find as well. Plenty of ice cream shops around too.

Chris Stapleton Concert

By DJM |

Virginia Beach sucks! They have no idea how to control traffic for an event. The whole layout is awful. Would never come back here. One of the worst places ever!

Beautiful Beach -lots of fun

By Atlantis20 |

We spent a week at this beach and loved it. Very clean, nice restaurants nearby. Water was a little chilly but refreshing with high temps. Dolphins swim pretty close to the shoreline. Nighlty fireworks were entertaining too.

Haven't been here in 35 years. Wow, have things changed!

By Patricia Y |

First of all let me say that when I still worked the beach was not the best option for me because I could only get time off during the Mid Summer and I really dislike crowds. Thirty five years ago we did take our Daughter there were she was young in combination with a visit to King's Dominion and Busch Gardens. There really weren't many motels at all and they were motels at the beach at that time and the beach itself wasn't very nice either.

I couldn't even recognize it. They have done a really incredible job of building, improving and cleaning up VA Beach. The beach is now bigger, much cleaner and better. We loved it and hated to leave.

Beautiful beach, families having fun

By 99cooks111 |

The beach is beautiful, the boardwalk is great, King Neptune on the boardwalk is a cool connection to the sea. Good people watching. This place is crazy busy, plan for traffic delays traveling around. The town is a tired tourist pit. Bring your platinum card, choose your hotel well, and good luck finding a great restaurant.

Slap on the sunscreen!

By SycamoreSue |

Nice, well maintained, sandy beach. Very breezy which is a fooler in the sun. Slap on the sunscreen! Lots to watch.

Nice beach, quite, and that's pretty much it.

By LAC |

Virginia Beach is a nice, laid back area with miles of beautiful sand, a nice long boardwalk, and tons of hotels, ice cream, souvenir shops, eateries, and the like. Not a lot of activities, and mostly quite, at least when we went in mid August. Temps were in the 80's but dropped into the low 70's at night, so you could get chilled if still in your beachwear. Water was very rough when we went, but pretty warm. Lifeguards scattered throughout. They have small groups of musicians playing up and down Atlantic avenue at night, and some bigger groups at the larger pavilions off the beach.

I love the beach, but only for so long, and not day after day. Unfortunately, there isn't a heck of a lot to do in the area, other than a small aquarium and zoo. It's a laid back vibe, not busy like Myrtle Beach or Ocean City.

Beach vacation

By Suzanne J |

The beach is clean with easy access. Great place to take the kids. Recommend boogie boards for the kids, it was hours of entertainment for my 6, 10 and 14 year olds.

Nice Beach

By rambo4567 |

This beach is very nice and clean. Also a nice outside fitness area on the beach for anyone to use. Easily accessible from my hotel room.

Stay anywhere except here

By Camper51638816560 |

From the moment my wife and I arrived, we wanted our vacation back. Virginia beach is trash! I've never stayed somewhere where I couldn't find a single redeeming feature about a place until I stayed here. I can't even begin to describe how disappointed we were with this place. If you're planning to visit here, don't.

Winter vacation getaway

By Butch B |

Who goes to the oceanfront in the middle of winter? We did and had a blast. Fortunate to have a few days here with food weather on December. This is the best time to visit, it’s not crowded and off season prices are the rule. And, it’s just as beautiful. Some amazing local restaurants, don’t miss Pocahontas pancakes for breakfast, Pelon’s for tacos at lunch, and finish the day with seafood at Big Sam’s.

Pre-hurricane Dorian experience was wonderful!

By Danimals |

Had to leave the Outer Banks early in September as Dorian was tracking up the coast so my wife and I landed at a hotel on Virginia Beach beach. I head heard that earlier in the summer a beach restitution project was taking place and I saw that they recovered a vast majority of the oceanfront from the water to create a much larger and attractive beachfront. Money well spent. We did not rent a Cabana (too expensive) but got to spend time roaming the beach and the boardwalk wasn't too busy either. Also, saw the Navy move their Atlantic Fleet off-shore 2 full days and a day later see the fighter jets leave to escape the hurricane. Worth another future trip.

Beautiful walkway & beach

By Connie S |

Quiet mornings watching the sunrise. Busy as the day goes on and more so in the evening. A 3 mile boardwalk. Sandy beach well cared for.

Fall vacation.

By Tambree Y |

As always Virginia Beach does not disappoint! Clean beach, friendly business workers. Wonderful getaway!

Call me Sandy

By William S |

There are closer beaches, but we keep coming back here for the really wide beach and the very smart layout. For 33 blocks it's sand, boardwalk, bike path, bars, bistros and restaurants, and hotels. We never have to cross the street. This summer, the water was warm, with zero seaweed, no jellyfish, and manageable crowds. We had a splendid vacation, as we usually do; about 15 visits.

Beach corrosion imminent

By Valveron W |

Virginia Beach oceanfront is going to loose the beach pretty soon due to poor City Management. Since 2023 the City of Virginia Beach has failed to combat beach corrosion. As a matter of fact zero for the entire year 2024, and for 2025 they have done just 5% probably just for defalcation of funds. Who knows….something fishy there. I can tell the first hurricane or major storm would washout the entire beach. Time certainly would tell if I’m right.

Fall vacation

By lovestotravel428 |

Beach is absolutely gorgeous. We learned that the waves were larger than usually due to hurricane Lorenzo. Surfers were very happy. Beaches extremely clean and maintained.

Didn't get to fish

By K Butler |

Scheduled fishing trip cancelled by the Captain due to the weather.
Fishing peirs all close in October, Ruedees Inlet was being dreched and rock shores footing to unstable.

Still had a good time with the other visitors and hotel guest.

Beautiful...

By Paul M |

Gorgeous beach! Wide, as well! Keep a sharp eye out for schools of dolphins often swimming in threes and fours!

Road trip

By Vacationer76760 |

Nice clean beach. Beautiful water and a great fishing pier. Will definitely try to make it back again.

North end clean, uncrowded

By Ryan D |

North end was quiet, clean, uncrowded. Could often see the dolphins just off the beach. Wide concrete boardwalk, steady flow of people, walking, biking, riding weird little pedal carts they rented farther down the boardwalk. Good people-watching.

Anniversary Trip to VB!

By Sherie N |

We are so impressed with Virginia Beach. It is clean and well maintained. We love the Boardwalk and the separate bike trail, although there are people that rode on the boardwalk and you are not supposed to. The Sculptures were beautiful all along the Boardwalk. The Music on the weekend along the Boardwalk was so great. King Neptune’s Sculpture was incredible. The sand on the beach was kept clean. Lifeguards were around to keep people out of water due to rip currents. We would love to return!

Beautiful Beach

By EPM3 |

Traveled with a group of 13 friends and family. I found the beach and water to be very clean. We stayed on the North end of the beach which tends to be less crowded. I found the crowd at the beach to be mostly families. Every one was respectful and well behaved on the beach...unlike some other beaches I have been to. We enjoyed watching the dolphins swim by everyday and we even liked watching the Navy jets fly by all day. It was like getting a free airshow! I would highly recommend visiting Virginia Beach.

Great beach!

By Marcy K |

I haven't been here since my brother was in the navy in the 80's. It's so much more than I expected and so VERY pretty and well maintained.

Kids loved the beach

By Keep Life Simple Allan |

We spent a day at Virginia Beach. The beach was virtually empty on a Saturday at noon . Probably safer than your local grocery store. Me and Joyce walked the boardwalk and many restaurants and business were closed . Our son and his family enjoyed the people free beach and had a good time. We did not see any of the jellyfish others mentioned and beach was spotless.

Clean beach

By hokie728 |

Nice clean beach, we usually go to Myrtle Beach but changed it up this time, we enjoyed the beach very clean

nice clean beach

By jeanettelamm |

large beach front and water is so calm most of the time lots of motels to stay on beachfront its like a mini myrtle beach lots of stuff to do

Jets are deafening

By Ghozttraveller |

I must have come on the wrong day or something, 1 to 2 fighter jets were taking off or flying nearby every 30 minutes and they are absolutely deafening. Could not hold a conversation until they had passed, definitely not relaxing and we ended up leaving the beach after an hour and a half of this.

I understand supporting the military and being patriotic, but listening to the sound of these jets constantly has nothing to do with patriotism. I understand this is a big jet fighter hub. Bad location choice for a vacation area next to it. Speaking with locals it apparently sorta ruined parts of a music festival that was held here a few days ago.

If you don't mind loud planes all the time, then this is a nice beach and well kept. Lots of restaurants and things to do. Personally I'll just stick to vacation areas that don't have this problem.

Lifeguard!

By allifromWI |

This was a nice, clean beach. Not great for shelling, but it had a very nice boardwalk and a few restaurants close by. What I thought was great was that they had a lifeguard. They had everyone leave the water when a storm was close by. I felt it was done a little prematurely, but she was doing her job and trying to keep people safe, so I appreciated that.

Early Morning Visit

By Dean_Amy-2004 |

We took advantage of stay at a beachfront hotel and hit the beach early on a Saturday morning. It got more crowded as the morning went, along with the heat. We stayed for about 2 1/2-3 hours and our granddaughter enjoyed the ocean and sand time. Waves were not as bad as the last visit, so we have more time in the water and biggie boarding.

Beautiful beach

By Lillian A |

The beach was beautiful and clean. I went with two young children and we had a great time. Very safe!

AVERAGE VACAY

By Marian M |

We stayed at the north end where there were fewer people and not as crowded with over priced tourist shops. However, we were not prepared for the loud jets flying over every 10 minutes until 10 30 or 11 pm. Saw the lighthouse, pier, skipped aquarium. So
me of the bus drivers were just there to fill the seats and take your money. Buy a 3 day pass from someone who knows how to tell you where to get them. Glad we only stayed a few days. Not a bad vacation but average. Older hotels and high rises are off the list after Florida's tragedy.

Our first time at Virginia Beach and it was beautiful. We stayed at the South End during “Covid” and still had a wonderful time. People thankfully did a great job at Social Distancing and wearing masks in the congested areas of our hotel.
The boardwalk is VERY nice and we enjoyed the bike path also.

Beach Construction

By Michael B |

If you are traveling to Virginia Beach in the near future be advised to that a large portion on the beach is under construction. The area affected starts around 20th Street and extends north. Due to the construction about an eight block area is fenced off which makes the adjacent open areas very crowded. The construction is also making the water very muddy with a bad smell.

Beautiful beach

The town of Virginia Beach does a terrific job of maintaining their beach. They run equipment over it early each morning to pick up debris and smooth the sand. We thoroughly enjoyed our three days there.

Nice Beach Area with Things to Do

By pacimovic |

We had a great time in VA Beach, its a real beach community with lots of restaurants and activities. The Boardwalk is nicely kept with well maintained landscaping. It seems to offer something for everyone and I wold definitely come back here again.

Central point for tidewater area

By Dennis S |

We spent time here while exploring the local area. Prices are lower than summer, the crowds are gone, and there is much to see within a half hour drive. The city beach is first class. They keep it clean, the boardwalk and bike paths run the length of the resort area, and there are showers conveniently located at most of the entrances. The only hindrance might be parking. If you stay at a beachfront hotel, it's not an issue, but if you're off Atlantic Ave, then parking is at a premium. Oceanfront hotel prices are a bargain right now, so go for it and enjoy the view. The boardwalk appears to be very safe at night. We didn't see anyone who looked like they might be looking for trouble. The beach itself was uncrowded and very wide, so social distancing is a breeze.

Great time for my birthday

I really enjoyed my visit here. First time here. I was surprised by the jets flying over the beach all day. F-18 super hornets. Lots of great places to eat. Chesapeake has really good seafood.some of the best you'll ever have. Very clean with lots of flowers

Felt safe in evenings along the boardwalk. Well kept shoreline. Stayed at the dirt landing state park. Convenient to all sites visited around town and Further inland

They nickel and dime you for parking....20.00 is outrageous....and hotels are filthy.. And the locals are rude..our families won't be coming back

Beautiful Place

I loved the relaxed pace of Virginia Beach. There are so many things to do and see. If you want to you can just sit and people watch. A lot of great restaurants too.

Just Loving It

By PaleoGypsy |

I love Virginia and Virginia Beach. If you are interested in birding, you will see many species of birds throughout the year. Look for the pelicans, herons, gulls, and MORE.There is a lot to do in this area. Per your fitness level, take a hike along the beach. Or, look for shells. Fly a kite. Watch the boats. Read a book. Nearby, are many conveniences and creature-comforts. Retail, restaurants, hotels, et cetera abound. Stay for 1-2 days, or an entire week or more. When you leave to boardwalk, check out the gorgeous murals.

Good Beach

They were doing a beach renourishment project during our stay but the machines were super quiet and it seems they did a good job reshaping the beach. The beach is well maintained and pretty clean. I think its nicer than Myrtle Beach personally.

Safe, Family-Friendly Atmosphere

By Mar'n'Me |

We took our son and two grandchildren (ages 13 & 8) to Virginia Beach for four days at the end of July. Because we were traveling with young children, we wanted somewhere safe with a family-friendly atmosphere. (Check out Virginia Beach's website for "Know Before You Go".) Our hotel was on Atlantic at 18th Street, a block away from the 17th St music stage. We spent most of our time in the ocean and on the beach. There is a beach replenishment project this summer; they are working their way from south to north and were above 31st St when we were there. Lifeguards are on the beach during the day. Street performers (we saw acrobats, magicians, singers, musicians, artists) start at 7:30 each evening up and down Atlantic Avenue. Some eateries we can personally recommend: Waterman's Surfside Grille, 415 Atlantic Avenue; Il Giardino, 910 Atlantic Avenue; Cancun Fiesta, 1516 Atlantic Avenue; Harvest, 1718 Atlantic Avenue. The Wave trolley is a great (and economical) way to get around. Be sure to pick up a copy of the Virginia Beach Official Destination Lookbook and stop at the Visitor Center.

Clean large beach

By Katie Iris |

This beach is kept very clean which is remarkable considering the amount of people on it every day. It is large and they rake the sand daily. Has lifeguards. It is a bit nebulous as to how to rent chairs though. Most people bring their own chairs and umbrellas, though we saw a few that appeared to be rentals, didn't see a rental attendant though.

Lovely place for a vacation

Virginia Beach surprised me.
I was expecting a barrier-island summer resort, like Ocean City or Stone Harbor in New Jersey.
This isn't on a barrier island at all, but a city at the tip of a peninsula.
It has a long history and a well-established residential section that most visitors will never see.
What visitors *will* see is the long beach, with its lovely three-mile long promenade ("boardwalk" that has no boards), a separate bike path, and pretty landscaping.
I imagine the city planners keep tight control on esthetics, as this is a lovely place to walk.
I didn't see many people on the beach or swimming - a puzzlement in August. I didn't go swimming, either, as I was in town for a different reason.

Hotel prices were the highest I've *ever* paid, and that includes London and Paris.
High season, undoubtedly.

I might come back in the off-season except for one thing -
It is so miserable getting here.
I averaged 30 mph on I-64, for forever. It was excrutiating.
And then I-95 in Virginia is a parking lot. I was grateful to reach the Capital Beltway (I-495) around DC, because, compared to Virginia traffic, the DC Beltway was a breeze.
Getting here was just awful. Will I come back to this event next year? Not if I can help it.

Dirty and stinky water

By Fabio |

Many days the water was infested with jellyfish than on last few days color changed to brown with a strong fish smell. It was probably because of pollution as there were many dead small fish one morning.

Murky Water

By dhayem |

We always visit Virginia beach every summer. They have wonderful board walk. Although some bike riders do not follow the bike lane and they use the pedestrian strip. Also lots of skaters even there are lots of No skate boards signs. They also have a wonderful beach. Word of warning, they have the "Renourishment". The process can make the water murky. If you can swim a little further from the shore, it is less murky.
I will visit again next year hoping the project is finished.

Nice beach

We have been in Virginia Beach a couple of times. It’s a good place for families to enjoy their time. Lots of good restaurants, good seafood, good beers. You can walk around in downtown and at the beach on the walking trail.

Disappointing Restaurant Experience After Years of Visitin

By Terry C |

I’ve been visiting the Virginia Beach Boardwalk since 1990 and have always enjoyed the atmosphere, views, and local attractions. However, on my most recent trip, I was extremely disappointed with the overall restaurant experience.

Unfortunately, the service at several of the restaurants we visited was far below expectations. Four of them, in particular, had staff who lacked basic people skills and professionalism. What made the situation worse was that each of these establishments automatically added a tip to the bill—despite the poor service. While I don't mind an automatic gratuity when service warrants it, in these cases, the added tip did not reflect the quality of the experience.

The only restaurants where we received decent service were those that allowed us to decide the tip ourselves. This trip, sadly, marked the worst dining experience I’ve ever had at Virginia Beach.

I moved to the area from SC/Charlotte for work, so I thought I'd take the family to check out VB and the oceanfront. Total barf. Garbage everywhere. Super ghetto. Not worth the trip. Better beaches in the area and in the country. Yorktown and Williamsburg have nicer beaches. Most certainly even crowded Myrtle Beach is classier than VB with more amenities. Hampton roads makes me I miss SC/NC. It's like they peaked in the 90s and stayed there.

mini vacation

the only reason for 3 stars is we went to look for sea shells and their wasn't any unless you want broken one that are mixed in with the sand other than that it's some what a clean beach.

We return 2-3x a year

By Ereina |

Our family of 7 returns to VA Beach several times a year. It’s a beautiful, wide beach with plenty of room to play. There is a nice boardwalk, good restaurants, and beautiful balcony views from the hotels. The beaches have several playgrounds on the beach too.
