Unlike the French Riviera , you must check Parks Dept daily bacterial count before entering the water.

Nice beach for a family outing! Clean and lots to see with lots of sailboats to see in the distance. $7 to enter and park but plenty of parking.

Recently traveled by boat from Chicago to Michigan City to spend a night gambling at the Blue Chip. We decided to dock the boat at Washington Park Marina and sleep onboard.
This marina is one of the nicest, safest, and most convenient that I've ever seen. 24 hour gas dock. Gates around the marina are secured 24 hours a day and only boaters who are staying at the marina have a fob to open the gates. Great staff, great facility.

Friends in Texas laugh when I say I'm going to the beach in Indiana; that's fine, we'll keep it a secret. I grew up here and return as often as possible. Soft sandy beach, clean water (unless it's stormy), reasonable entry fee, easy parking, new "street food" beach bar added this year, didn't try it but great upstairs view overlooking the lake. Picnic areas, walk the pier out to the lighthouse, take little kids to nearby zoo or splash pad, perfect place for a day in the sun. Or the rain. Just remember it's mine.

Nice area to visit - great beach. Try to go when the Sports Boats are running. Refreshments are cheap as well on the beach. $10 parking

Review written after Saturday visit in August 2015. Few minutes driving from Lighthouse Outlet shopping - exit the beach parking area then go STRAIGHT through the light. Turn right to 6th Street.
Enjoy!

The lighthouse and beach on the lake was nice. I wasn't too impressed as I just came back from the UP.😎
This could be a nice place if:
1. People walking dogs would bend down and pick up after them...
Next time you are going take shoes you won't mind getting in dog poo.💩

There are a number of activities to do in this area. It is a great spot if you’re visiting Michigan city. The pier and lighthouse is highly recommended, fishing out on the pier, splash pad, the park. Great place to take Family for the day.

The waves coming in was so relaxing just lets your mind clear and the sunsets was just amazing would love to be able to do all the time

Overall great park. We only did the beach and the zoo but it was nice and clean. $7 to park but there is a lot available once in the park.

We were here memorial day weekend and had a blast! Clean, beautiful beaches and all around fun time! We visited a good truck festival in the park and ate delicious food!

What a surprise! Beach is beautiful and not crowded! It is $7 a day to use it, but definitely worth it! Walked the pier. Bonus, you can see Chicago action the lake!

We were driving from Notre Dame back to Minnesota. We stopped at Washington Park in Michigan city for a little break. My kids are 11 and 13 years old and we all loved it! We felt like we were at the ocean! The beach has fine soft sand and the water is So blue!! We would all go back and we definitely recommend it!

We went to the beach on a beautiful day. Took a walk out to the lighthouse, enjoyed a cool lake breeze, sand was clean and the water was clear. It does cost 8 dollars to park. There is Volleyball courts, concessions and even a Zoo and splash park for the kids. Enjoyed it.

Cost $8 to park. But if you go after dark it’s free! The water is beautiful and so clear! It looks just like the ocean! The pier is pretty cool to walk out on. It seemed like it’s kinda the hang out spot for the teenagers. Just be aware!

Beautiful, peaceful views of Lake Michigan and the Lighthouse; parking for the zoo..new bar on top floor w Lake views. The fairly new concrete boardwalk gives you a beautiful walking path just be care near the lighthouse when waves are high as there are no guard rails closer to lighthouse but walk along the lake has guard rails and is beautiful

We just went to see the water and the waves were fairly high the day we went there. That's what we wanted.

Loved being able to park and walk so close to the beach. We didn't have to pay for parking but I'm not sure if there is a charge or not...this park is right next to the Zoo and Lighthouse Museum.

Parking admission is $8, which isn't too bad. Nice white sand, a few pretty dunes, & crystal clear blue Lake Michigan water. It's a fairly busy, but clean beach. Great for individuals, families, or groups.

This was our first trip to Michigan City and we will definitely be back! Loved everything about this park and the beach is so clean!

This is one of the cleanest and best maintained beaches in the area. Access to the beach is easy and the scenery is incredible!

The park is near the zoo, marina and beach. Big trees to picnic under. You can walk around the marina and I think to the beach

Great beach- clean , spacious - NO PETS . You can bring coolers - no glass. Pavilion that is huge with picnic tables and grills for cooking. Parking is now 20.00 - you may have to walk a mile on the weekends. Bring a cart to haul your things. You can bring tents. There is a public restroom - pretty far from the water though. Beach restaurant. Life guards on duty. Sand volleyball nets, a lot of fun things on the weekend to watch. The town surrounding the beach is a beautiful little town. Casino a lot of boats and cool restaurants.

It's a warm weather destination. Love the beach and lake. One of the few beaches in the world with Singing Sands. The fresh water of Lake Michigan is a more enjoyable upper 70's by mid-late July. Nice clarity for splashing/swimming/snorkeling. Walk/jog the hard packed shoreline. Sometimes quite crowded, but always plenty of room for everyone enjoying blue sky and bright sun. Daily parking fee. Season pass available.
Whether by accident or by choice, visits to Washington Park may coincide with fishing tournaments, zoo events, band concerts, parades, volleyball, fireworks, car cruises, cardboard boat race, fun days, runs, soccer, superboats, triathlon, boat show, art festival, labor day festival, or Oktoberfest. Ever changing arrays of sunset colors across the water from the beach. Boat launch for those with watercraft. Grassy, shaded picnic areas, or party in the sand. Playground. Splash Pad (fees). Zoo (fee). Museum (fee). Lighthouse. Restrooms/port-a-pots. New concession stand. Plenty of SeaGulls to entertain or annoy you. Winter guests get to see icebergs, and the park is aglow with the holiday Festival of Lights, beautiful after a fresh snow. But the warmer seasons are much more fun, on a superb beach.

We went over to MC to use their Freedom Boat Club. The boats were very clean. This is a very nice and secure marina facility. There is a little boat store with food and ice and ice cream. The dock staff was very nice. This is a great Freedom Boat Club location.

My husband and I decided to visit this beach during our weekend getaway instead of Indiana Dunes. We had heard that the parking there was less expensive, more spots available, and the scenery was beautiful. They were right! There seemed to be volleyball tournaments going on and still there were spots available.
We weren't sure what to expect with the beach as this was our first trip to the lake. I loved the lighthouse! We enjoyed walking out there and exploring. There's a really beautiful view from the lighthouse. It made for some pretty pictures!
My only complaint was that there was what seemed like a lot of garbage in the sand, which I found sad because there are trash cans everywhere. I don't know how often the beach is cleaned. The water was refreshing and we were able to walk pretty far out before it got deep. Everyone around us seemed to be having a great time as well.
Would definitely visit again. CASH ONLY ($7) AT ENTRANCE! We learned that the hard way. There is a lifeguard on duty.

Beautiful sand, clean beach. Small playground for the kids. In season there are lifeguards and a bath house. Right across the street is a delightful, small zoo.

Fantastic Beach!!! Lake swimming is wonderful in good weather! Sun block is a must and careful attention to lifeguard instructions, rip currents and good water safety habits are intelligent! ENJOY SAFELY!!

It was our first trip to the area. The entrance was not well marked and we almost turned down the wrong way where there were spikes in the road to block access. We wanted to try to walk around the park to see what was there but the parking in the area is so restrictive that we had no choice but to use the beach entrance and pay the fee. Once we got in we were disappointed. There isn't really much of a part area to walk in, the beach area is relatively small and the walk out to the lighthouse was boring. The view from the lighthouse leaves much to be desired as there is a huge power plant and smokestack built right on the waters edge in the harbor. After leaving the beach we thought we would drive around a little but there are No-Access signs everywhere and the only roads are one way out over the spikes. Don't back up! We found the whole atmosphere of this park unpleasant and would not return again, especially since there are much nicer and friendlier places a few miles up the road in Michigan.

We spent a few days here over the Labor day weekend. Very nice wide beach. Parking is close by and felt very safe.

Our family stayed overnight in Michigan City during our vacation. We specifically chose a hotel close to Lake Michigan (and specifically this park) so we could have a little evening beach time. The beach was busy but there was ample parking (we, however, walked there). We only spent time on the beach, but it looked like there were many other features that we could have checked out with more time. There is also a beautiful concession stand with restrooms on site.

Family attraction something for everyone to enjoy from jet skiing, to boating to sunbathing. You won't be disappointed

We had to pay $7.00 for daily pass just to go to the park and the beach. We would have went again but didn't want to pay another fee.

Washington park was a nice park. Clean and the sandy beach was nice. Busy with the super boat races but was very well managed. Nice place on the water

Being from Michigan originally, I would take anyone to this beach and show off Lake Michigan. We met family from out of state here and they were very impressed. Clean, very large sandy area. Nice changing area with bathrooms. Long sidewalk area along water to the pier with lighthouse. Lighthouse walk was awesome, a little nerve wracking with little ones as there is no railing. Great place for pictures. Kids enjoyed the big waves too. Parking was a little crazy and a long walk but there was plenty of it.

Was unsure after reading some of he reviews, but am glad we went! We found it to be very clean and family friendly. Like being at the ocean :)

We visited on July 3, 2017. They were getting ready for the 4th celebration. Everything was groomed and clean. It was very least to see the many boats - yachts and the beach and lighthouse pier was wonderful. Many folks were fishing on the pier, but I did not see anyone catching any fish. The is a small zoo across the street and a lighthouse museum. Combine that with the outlet shops and the casino, makes for a good day.

Beautiful and well kept. Definite must stop if you are in the area. Felt like you were on the ocean.

I had business to transact so I met my client at Washington Park. The park is beautiful year round and parking is convenient. We enjoyed the fresh air and view of beautiful Lake Michigan. What a great place to meet for business or family picnic. This is a place that visitors should visit at least once while in Michigan City.
Dr. Watson

beautiful park and beach, very windy day so lots of kiteboarders to watch! We came after labor day so water park was closed

Really nice sand and beach. It does get crowded during events but overall it’s the best attraction in Michigan City

nice view of the lake. Near the zoo and waterpark. many places to eat with in a 5 min drive. Must pay for parking during season. But now no parking fee required..

The beach had Washington Park is absolutely beautiful. The pier as well as the zoo are also great things to go explore with the family

For sure worth stopping by for a good view of the Lake . Be sure to stop at shoreline Brewery near by

Loved this beach! Very clean, not as busy as Indiana Dunes state park beach, beautiful view of lighthouse and boats, volleyball nets, life guards, water is super clear! There are some rocky areas but if you go down the beach closer to the lighthouse there arent as many rocks. $7 for a days parking.

take your family and go to this park, several blocks of white sandy beach, restaurants, and even a zoo to explore.

Went to beach...very clean...bath house could be better shape... only 1 outside shower and was freezing cold...didn't get to do anything else... was told by locals zoo wasn't worth the price to get in... maybe in the future but we will go back.

The park has many things to enjoy for families. The zoo, beach, pier walk to lighthouse, play area and best of all a free, large splash pad area. Our grandkids really enjoyed the splash pad.

Nice well kept city park and lake view. Enjoyed the Michigan City Community Band concert. Grandkids liked the play areas, and the mini dunes, since Mt Baldy is closed. Nice walk along the lake and out to the lighthouse. Wish we had tome to visit the zoo and perhaps do that next trip.

We stayed several hours with small children to play on playground and have a picnic lunch. Nice for small children.

The park is right on Lake Michigan so the view is greeat. The park was okay. We do enjoy seeing the holiday decorations at
Christmas time.

Flew kites for hours. Great area for flying. Almost ready to hit the waves for some exciting kite surfing. Clean beach. Beautiful views of light house, pier and sunset.

We stopped here on our travels this week. The water was cool, but it was nice to walk on the beach and dip out toes into Lake Michigan. The Lighthouse is so cute, we didn't walk out to it but enjoyed the view. We tried to stop on our way back through, but the weather prevented it. I'm sure it is much busier in the prime season, but I would go back. Two sand volleyball courts and restaurants right there. Also a zoo was at the park which we did not have time to visit.

Walking through Washington Park was very pretty! When we went I thought it was clean and felt safe! The marina also had a very nice path to walk on!

Nice, clean beach. Walk on the pier to the lighthouse Wonderful views walking distance to the zoo also

I did so enjoy taking time out of my visit with my family to walk around Washington park & see a lot of people from town this is an enjoyable time for me

There are not many things to do or places to eat in the park (and they mostly work o summertime), but if you decide to visit Michigan city, you should definitely stop by and try one of the boat tours. I took the boat for one hour and a half and there was a lot to see and the lake is really astonishing. Relaxing, at least.

We enjoyed the animals and the zoo being quite unique. It's a small zoo but some of the animals were cool. The bobcat, bears, and tiger were awesome. Downfall is $7.00 parking.

Fantastic beach with plenty to do. We only went to the beach but there is a bar and a splash pad. Lifeguards on the beach.

Lived here my entire life. The lakefront draws people to Michigan City. There are fees to park between Memorial Day & Labor Day. Otherwise parking is free. We have a BEAUTIFUL lighthouse and a great view of the Chicago skyline most nights. Marina and condos available. So close to major outdoor shopping mall and casino. Could use more attractions like other local beaches in Michiana. But beautiful nevertheless! Pokémon Go locations right in the vicinity!

Nice park. close to a lot of food choices. Good facilities and very clean. This was extremely relaxing.

THere were 15 of us who were there for about 3 hours. The children really enjoyed the beach and the water. Had lots of room to play ball in the water and have inflatables to play with. The younger children enjoyed being in the water as well as playing in the sand. Grandparents were very grateful for the "flatness" of the beach in comparison to other beaches that are accessed by walking on dunes.

Michigan City has a real gem in the beautiful beachfront and lighthouse. There are not many beaches with the beautiful "singing sand" that is here on this beach. On a clear day you have a view of Chicago just beyond the Lighthouse.
One thing to be alert to is Rip Currerts. The Life Guards will post information and flags if there are Rip Current conditions.
Parking Fee in 2015 is $7.00
It is well worth it!

Has all you could want, beach, splash park, playground, grills and across the street is the zoo which is very nice.

Very nice big and clean beach, has volleyball courts, and bathroom, small restaurant with second level has food and beer. Can bring own beer to beach if in cans. $15 dollar entry fee non-residents for all day

My husband and I both loved the shore line and being able to walk the clean beaches. Lots of things around in the area to which is nice and keeps you entertained. The parking lot can be confusing for tourist so just pay attention to what the signs say.

Great waterfront park area and marina. Lots of great outdoor spaces to enjoy and pretty flowers. Multiple dining choices, the Lighthouse Museum, and more.

Very nice beach and Lake Michigan waterfront. There is a lot of space to enjoy the water. There are also sand volleyball courts and a regular park to use and enjoy. There is also a pier with a lighthouse. I recommend taking a walk to the lighthouse and enjoy the view. There is a small daily parking fee of $8, but it's well worth it. It is also close to the Michigan City zoo. It's approximately an hour and 15 minutes from Chicago and 45 minutes to an hour from the south suburbs.

Most people know Washington Park for its summer concerts, kids park, zoo, and beach. They do a fun "old school" Christmas light show that you can drive through. Young kids absolutely love it.

We stopped by here on our mini-vacation to Michigan City. Great park with beach access. The gate had closed for the season, so we got in for free (in October), which was a welcome surprise. Great beach view.

We love this beach on Lake Michigan. The water is beautiful. The beach is clean and parking is only 7$. It was easy to get to and watching the boats come in and out of the marina from the pier was fun. I have 2 young children and they loved it too. The only suggestion I have is to spruce up the bath house and get more outside showers.

We went on a very hot weekend so the cool water of the lake was awesome. Sand was soft reminded me of gulf side of Florida. Peaceful looking out at the lake however when you look back at landside all you see us the huge power plant kinda an eyesore otherwise had a good time

Washington Park is a beautiful beach. It is clean and suitable for families. There are benches and ledges throughout that are perfect for sitting and enjoying the pretty atmosphere. There is even a cute lighthouse that sets the scene and is great for photo ops. Spend a day at the beach! This one's a great choice.

We had a great time here. The beach is very nice and lively. There is a lot to do but we just went to the beach. I wish we could have walked to the lighthouse. Everyone looked like they were having a good time.

The grounds aren’t kept us as well as they should. The beach is beautiful and large enough to have some privacy, however charging $15 to park is insane. I parked downtown and took the long walk over the drawbridge.

This area was very fun to walk around. Me, my husband and son went to Fish Camp Restaurant and it was pretty good, we visited the Old Lighthouse Museum which was cool and provides a ton of history of the area. We walked around by the fountain and attempted to see the pier Lighthouse but the waves were too high. Overall a good experience.

We decided to go to this park, because we wanted to go to the lake for a little bit and get some lunch. The restaurants nearby were all a bar type of setting and did not seem to be very kid friendly. You need to pay to park, which is annoying, but not terribly expensive if you plan to stay there for awhile. Unfortunately, we had planned to just walk the beach and eat, but ended up not doing much of either. In order to even get close to the water we had to walk all the way down to the lighthouse. The water there was not very clean, but it was good enough for what we wanted to do. The beach was incredibly crowded. I would say that the walk along the lighthouse was really nice and it was fun for the kids to just hang out by the water down there. The views of some of the dunes was pretty nice and the water was so blue! I think if we'd go there again, we would plan to bring our own food and plan to get there before all of the crowds.

We traveled here for a family getaway before school starts and this park is beautiful. So many things to do here (playground, zoo, splash pad, picnic, beach) and you pay $7 to park and that's all day. You can come and go as you please. We will most definitely be back.

Great beach for families. Gets pretty crowded on the weekends, but everyone seemed very friendly. Beaches were clean and plenty of trash receptacles to empty your waste. Lifeguard station close by and beach seemed to be patrolled regularly to keep everyone in check. The lighthouse is neat to see and walk up to. Amazing sunsets!!!!!

We visited the beach on our vacation to Michigan City. It was clean and very nice. We had a perfect day, not a cloud in the sky. It was not very crowded as it was a Tuesday. I would imagine the weekends are busier.

If you like to take pictures, and the beach...
And if you are very, very lucky, you can get a sunset with the Chicago skyline for a backdrop!

This park has one of the best beaches along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. In most areas the beach is at least 200 yards deep in spite of the fact that the lake is at a high level this year. There is a nominal entry fee if you are not a citizen of Michigan City. There is plenty of parking and the beach is easily accessible for most people. There is the Sunset Grill which has a walk up food service during the day and features a top level restaurant and bar during the evening hours. There are also five restaurants within a block of the park exit.

We went as a small get away! And what a getaway it was! The park and the beach were inviting and clean! It was packed with people, but everyone was having a great time! I would definitely recommend it!

On shore of Lake Michigan, my happy place! Love the sand and plenty of shore to walk. Life guards in some areas, for family swimmjng. But please read warnings and obey warnings signs, the waters can be dangerous. Amazing place to see sunset! There is a small zoo that is good for the little children.

Try to find parking away from the zoo area! You can get lucky with parking along a side street. Friendly visitors and police presence and lots of fun in the sand! Great time!!

Just wanted to stop by and see the lake..... Cost me $7 to park my car so that I could get to see the LAKE. boy oh boy the isn't anything for free in this world anymore. very disappointing.

This such a great place for everyone to spend a day there. Fine sand beach with a long lake shore. Life guard on duty to gave us security. $7:00 for entry is worth it.
You will have fun with your family there like swim; BBQ and sun bathing.

This beautiful park has a marina, beach, zoo, and a Civil War memorial. I have included pictures of the beach, which is one of the best remaining in this area (along with that at Indiana Dunes State Park). There is a daily fee for entering Washington Park and a fee for parking.
This area's river (Trail Creek, previously called "Portage River") was used for rowing canoes upstream to portage to rivers that flowed ultimately to the Mississippi. Michigan City, Indiana was also the crossroads of many Indian trails: North-South trails along the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan and East-West trails (to clear the South edge of Lake Michigan). There were also many diagonal trails, say to Detroit and other centers. Those Indian trails became settler roads and railroads were built next to them, so Michigan City was a fur trading center and was once seen as a rival to Chicago which had the same sort of geographical advantages.

It's Indiana! Never would have thought I could have gotten beaches such as this here. We fished on the pier and swam for hours. The water is really clear and clean.

The concerts on Thursday night are a great way for the local people to get together for an evening of entertainment.

We had a great 2 days at the beach. Well groomed. Relatively inexpensive parking. Life guards on duty. Bathrooms could use a bit of upgrading.

Beautiful location off of Lake Michigan and though it a bit warm we enjoyed walking down the boardwalk. The kids loved watching the fisherman with his catch of salmon.

We were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of this beach, the large expanse of beach and the very beautiful walkway that runs alongside it. Benches to just sit and look or actually go onto the beach. In this same area, is a Lighthouse Museum, which is a wonderful look into the past of this entire area and the lifestyle of the inhabitants. A very informative docent will explain any questions you may have and describe in detail what is contained there.

Loved this place!! I simply cannot wait to go back. The water was crystal clear, and so relaxing. I would highly recommend a visit to this place.

tried Beach on Saturday-somewhat crowded, but beach is large and we had plenty of room. Beach is sandy, nice light blue water and you can go out for approx. 50 yds. Plenty of room in water for activities. Worse thing was the lines for the rest rooms.

This is a public beach. $7 parking fee is what you pay to get in. There are restrooms but they are dirty and walls have lots of graffiti. Life guards were on duty when we were there. The lake is beautiful with calming scenery. The beach is littered with cigarette butts and debris. This beach has so much potential but could use a good cleaning on a daily basis.

My gosh what's not to like about Washington Park. The beach, zoo, marina, restaurants and the excursion boat ride. Visit the Lighthouse Museum and enjoy a short walk out to the lighthouse. You will not be disappointed!

It's a nice beach but a lot of smokers. We enjoyed sitting and watching parasailers and jet skiers. Cold day but still nice.

Every year when my nephews come to town, we head up here. They love the lake and love walking the pier to the lighthouse. Great memories

This park is truly a gem within the city limits of Michigan City. We were staying at the Blue Chip Casino, which was only a couple minute drive from the park. The $7.00 to park all day was well worth every penny of it. The beach was clean. The water was beautiful. The views were great. Not very crowded and plenty of space. Definitely worth a stop in to see this gem in the city.

Even though it was super windy and cold on my recent visit (4.22), I enjoyed my walk along the beach and Lake Michigan. I will have to return this summer.

It was such a shame and sadden me to see how the city is allowing such an asset go way side. I grew up in Michigan City and this was my first time returning home for a visit in over 10 years.
The park and it's history needs to be protected and kept up or soon it will be gone.

We were just there for the power boat races. The park is very nice, and the beach was clean. There is tons of parking, that you have to pay for. You can walk out to the lighthouse. There is a really nice pavilion with a concession stand. The food was above a normal concession stand for sure. Really great summer vibe all around.

We take a family trip to Washington Park every year! This year we went two weekends in a row. The park is beautiful. The beach is clean, and very nice. The beach is large enough that both times it was fairly crowded but not so much that you wanted to leave. we also love taking walks and fishing on the light house pier. The only thing I think could be made better is a larger bath house with more showers closer to the beach.

We were staying nearby for football weekend and I wanted to see the lake as I had never had the opportunity before. I was amazed, the beach was so clean, we sat at a picnic table and ate lunch with a terrific view. Will definitely come back here!!

This zoo is small and is very walkable with small children. Alot of inside areas to view the animals, they don't have Giraffes and Elephants.
Exotic peacocks walking around loose, lion, bear, gator, and tiger cages here. Tickets are $8 bucks for adults and children ages under 2 are FREE!

I call this view my happy place ! It's so beautiful . There where a lot of people when we where there but it didn't take anything away from just how majestic the water is . Go ! Stay ! And play ....

I grew up in Michigan City, but moved away many years ago. Recently we came back to MC for a visit and spent several hours in the Park and on the beach. I really miss the beautiful area and magnificent beach. Well worth a visit!
I would definitely come back again when in MC.

The beach here is in excellent shape. The boat show was a big disappointment not very many boats and very few booths the visit. Will write this off my things to do list every August.

The beach was beautiful, the water was cold but it was still a nice time. We did not find any bathrooms or porta potties on the beach which was an inconvenience but we still had a good time. We visited the zoo on another day, it's a small zoo, good for younger children.

Used to live here, visit with my kids every few years. Had a very nice picnic lunch in the park before hitting the zoo and then the beach. Fantastic gem of a park and the people who live here are so lucky to have it!

There is a small zoo and across the street the beach, and a lighthouse. Will visit again, Parking was $7.00, I thought a bit pricey, but it helps maintain the zoo. LLamas, miniature horses, a small zebra, lots of birds, and you can feed the goats.

Stop after lunch on Monday, September 29th. Nothing much going on. It was well kept. It was appropriate for us to be able to socialize a bit before returning home.

Did an overnight really had a nice time. Love the Outlet Mall and didn't go to the Zoo but stopped into the Casino which was a little smoky but had good entertainment at night.

Visiting on a cool September evening, swimming at Washington Park’s well known sandy Lake Michigan beach was not an option but I nevertheless enjoyed walking about, viewing the lakefront, marina, pier and picturesque lighthouse in the late evening sun.
I particularly liked the Art Deco features of the Washington Park Historic District that were built in the 1930s and include gardens, stone benches, the Naval Armory, a Civil War memorial monument and the Washington Bicentennial Drawbridge.

One of the best beaches we visited in the area. Huge. Many volleyball nets and clean. Plenty of parking. Restrooms and very nice concession area with a bar upstairs

Love the beach, zoo, marina. A great family place. Walk on the pier to the lighthouse for the beautiful view

We spent an afternoon here after touring the lighthouse museum. It has a very nice trail and flowers and shrubs. We saw several hummingbirds and butterflies by the memorial garden close to the bridge. This was the former site of the Smith Brothers cough drop factory, which was donated to the city. Good place to relax on a bench and enjoy the scenery.

While I enjoyed my visit to Washington Park (especially to see the Lighthouse), the $7 flat rate parking fee is frustrating when you only want to visit for 1-2 hours. I've always been a fan of hourly parking rates for this reason. I eventually found some Free Parking near the Old Lighthouse Museum and walked all the way over to Washington Park (through the Marina parking lot).
I still prefer the waterfront in St. Joseph (MI). Between Silver Beach County Park and Tiscornia Park (location of their Lighthouse), I feel the view of Lake Michigan is better up there. Plus, it's a little less crowded and Downtown St. Joe is wonderful! However, Washington Park is definitely worth visiting and 45 minutes closer to Chicago and much of North Central Indiana for those that don't want to make the extra drive.

No need for a lengthy review here. Grab your camera on a sunny day and go. Lots of good photo opportunities at this location.
Enjoy
J.

Washington Park celebrates the history of Michigan City and although a fee must be paid to enter the waterfront and park a car, it is so well worth it. Walking out on the pier to the lighthouse is pleasurable, especially the fresh air from the lake and watching the fishermen catch one of the delicious Lake Michigan perch. (These are better than Maine lobster) The zoo is yet another adventure: Old and a bit dated, it fits in with the historical aspects of this town that is in the process of redefining itself. Don't miss First Friday events, the bands, sidewalk vendors and plethora of unique shops. Of special note was a Mexican restaurant just across Hwy 20 on 421. I can't remember it's name, El Br . . ., but it is located in front of Michigan City Sports. They had the BEST Mexican food and the BEST margarita I've had since my visit to San Diego.

Marina life on a dime. You can't get away with living for less on an honest living and have access to more. Power sports, volleyball tourneys, a very quaint zoo, and at a fraction of the cost of Chicago prices.

Washington Park is a local gem in Michigan City. It is on the lakeshore with access to the beach. There is room to relax, walk or have a family day. Most of the shoreline around the area is private so this is a place where the public can go to the lake. The area is well maintained. There are some restaurants in the area by the Marina where you can get a bite to eat. This park is right downtown. Parking is available by the marina and you will have a walk to the ends of the park. A good!time on a warm day

Great beach! You can walk out to the lighthouse and enjoy the view of Chicago on a clear day. Great white sand beach. Lots of parking

We had a great time at the beach here. It was clean. The bath house was disgusting and they really need a bathroom attendant checking that. The parking was $8. The view was beautiful on the beach at night watching the sunset by the lighthouse.

Great park, lots to do and on a clear day you can see the tall buildings of Chicago. Make sure you stay and watch the sunset

I went to the beach and it was super clean. The sound of the waves was so relaxing. The bathrooms along with the parking are very close to the beach. The sand was being cleaned around us by machinery. The sand is soft and not hot to walk on during the hot summer. I will be going back again!!!

I visited Washington Park on a weekday so it wasn't crowded at all. The zoo is nice for a smallish municipal park. Nice collection of animals displayed well. The downside is that the zoo is not very handicapped and/or elderly friendly. Most of the paths and stairways are uneven cobblestone with no handrails. I would not recommend it for anyone with mobility problems. They have a nice little gift shop where I bought some cute little mugs.
The beach is wonderful. It stays shallow for a distance making it nice for toddlers. The walk out on the pier to the lighthouse has some good views although I don't know if the lighthouse is actually open to the public. They had a covered shelter at the beach with a lot of room if someone wanted to stay out of the sun and the beach itself is huge. I'm sure that you can find a place even on the busiest days.
The restroom nearest the zoo was extremely nasty that day but the bathhouse at the beach was less so.
If I lived closer I would go frequently!

Eight bucks to park to us was outrageous. However if you plan on making a day of it then the value might be better. We went to beach area and was fine. No showers to rinse off sand which was very disapppointing. So it was okay but I wouldn't go back.

Parking is $8 and only good for the day. I would recommend visiting the zoo & the park the same day so you don’t pay twice like we did. Or park somewhere safe if you can find a spot & walk over. We loved walking on the beach at sunset. The pier is wonderful not suitable for small kids though. A big wave did come over and land on the ladies behind us dumping six live fish on them. I found that really funny they did not. But seriously what are the chances of that happening.
It was cooler and later in the evening so not many people were about. We loved it and Lake Michigan has always been one of our favorite places. I noticed when we were leaving some questionable looking people coming to the beach & there were actually a few cop cars around so I figured it must be a local thing they are aware of. We would go back here on a warm afternoon.

This beach offers an amazing view which includes lighthouses. It is $8 to park but you have in and out privileges all day long until the park closes. There is a nice path to the beach so you don't have to walk in sand the whole way to the water. There were not that many people here when we visited on a Monday morning around 10:30am. The water was a bit cold but swimmable. The sand was very soft and there were not a lot of rocks. Michigan City has quickly become one of most favorite vacation spots.

This is a great beach. I was raised in Coco beach, FL and I prefer this beach over it or any other beach in florida! My kids love that the water is fresh and there is nothing that will sting or bite them! This is our go-to beach vacation from Indianapolis every July before school.

Love the lighthouse. Great sunset watching. We were there in off-season, crowds very light!
Neat walk to the lighthouse.

This park is pretty big and is in a really nice location (right by the water). There were geese everywhere so if you don't like them, be careful.

I went to the park this week on a breezy warm and sunny August day with a friend who lives in Michigan City. This is a really nice, clean, and friendly park!
We drove in and easily found a place to park. We sat on a picnic type bench between the cement wall and Lake Michigan proper for a good 1 1/2 hours.
We were able to see the Chicago skyline since it was a fairly clear day.
There were 8 or 9 patrons wind surfing and it was perfect for relaxing and taking a few photos. Families were there with children and it was a great opportunity to "people watch" and just enjoy a lazy afternoon.

Great place to visit. Great beach with lots of room and lifeguards on duty in the summer months. Spend the day at the beach or walk across the park to the zoo. Lots to there

A great place to spend the day. There is so much to do right there: the zoo, the beach, the splash park and the marina. There is plenty of picnic area so plan on packing a lunch and spending the day.

Beautiful, big sandy beach. When all the other beaches nearby have shrunk due to rising waters, Washington Park still has a great beach. No rocks either.

$20 for parking! Restrooms say "bath house" but it's only bathrooms with the stall door locks broken in the men's and women's restrooms. One shower head outside of the "bath house" just to rinse off. It's a nice beach but you would expect paying more than any other beach that the restrooms would be nicer with the stall door locks repaired. They had 3 port-a-potties near the "bath house" but I didn't check them out.

We were walking around the park, and all agree that Michigan City should invest more into this area. The lighthouse walk could benefit from an update. I'm glad the old rock benches are still in the actual park. Yes, they set up a decent Christmas lights display, but aside from the LaPorte County Symphony Orchestra renting the shell venue there, the place is otherwise dead. It's such a jewel...do more to bring it to life please.

We were amazed at the size and cleanliness of this beach with beautiful sand. $7 car admission quite reasonable.

Drove over to Michigan City from Joliet. I have been before, but my mother never had. Just as pleased this visit, as I was with my last. I'm sure with it being the "off season", the park wasn't charging their normal parking fee. The park was very clean and well maintained. The beach was beautiful. The amenities were well cared for. The park wasn't very crowded, but there were still several people enjoying the views. The walkway out to the Lighthouse is a must and provides some fascinating views. Be sure to bring a camera to capture some memories. I would without a doubt add this to your list of stops, if you are in the area.

Once you are inside it's really nice. The beach area is really nice with the lighthouse. Fun to watch the boats come and go. Downside is you have a huge power plant towering over it all. And avoid the zoo, it's the worst zoo I've ever been to.

We visited here on Saturday of a July 4th holiday weekend. It was busy as expected. Walking out to the lighthouse was fun (of course, do this as your own risk as all the signs will tell you - be careful of the slippery algae-covered edge - we saw a man fall in - he was fine by the way). We weren't there to actually sit on the beach - we mainly wanted to see the lighthouse. The layout of the entire park adjacent to the marina is a bit confusing. There are parking passes required for each new parking lot it seems. We ended up having a picnic in the grassy area of the park, which was nice. I'm glad we were there for several hours, otherwise the entrance fee of $8 would have been a bit steep just to see the lighthouse.

My wife and I sat out at the end of the pier right by the lighthouse for about 30 minutes. As long as you're facing away from the nuclear power plant the view is beautiful. Was perfect weather, clear sky and 78 degrees. Just sat and enjoyed watching the boats go by, and the breeze. Lighthouse looked great, although you can't go inside, was still worth the walk!

I would say after visiting the Indiana dunes National park and here, I would only ever go to the dunes. This beach is okay. We have visited a few times in the past. It's 20.00 to get in and park, not okay ! Compared to the 7.00 it is to enter the National Park, which is far more clean and beautiful.
The bathroom facilities here suck !! They are so run down and gross. The beach was littered even though there are trash cans everywhere so I did pick up some trash. I don't see why I would ever return when the National Park is about 15 mins from here.

This is a wonderful place to visit to relax. The weather was perfect for us. A clean park and plenty of space.Wear comfortable shoes so you can walk and enjoy the lighthouse and the sunset or sunrise. it was July but it cooled down a bit and a nice breeze made it great time. bring a camera to take pictures. something about the water relaxes me calms me down to enjoy nature,

nice beach, nothing spectacular but you are there at Lake Michigan so it's all good! Clean sand & swimming area.

We had a wonderful time looking at all the boats and visiting our friends and making new friends. Will go again.

The Christmas lights in the park are beautiful. If you are there in the evening make sure you go see.

Very nice city park with a beautiful beach. All the beaches along this stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline are crowded on a hot and sunny weekend in June, but we didn't have any trouble finding parking our our own turf on the beach.

Cool little lake town area. I have never been to Michigan city before be we will be back for sure. Many cool things to check out in the immediate area especially for little ones. Zoo, Park, Marina, Lake beach and open space. Be prepared to pay to park, that caught me off guard. Not far from the Heston Steam Museum which is a must see for little ones (and big ones) who like trains.

I have lived in Indiana for fifteen years and never knew I was so close to stick a nice beach. Doesn't even feel like I am in Indiana, I will be coming to visit more often

Okay it used to be my favorite place the bumper car Pavilion then they tore it down and built fire and ice on top of a take out BT type restaurant you have to be 21 to go up above but it is worth it the views are fantastic and the drinks and music and the dunes the lake it's really something to experience get there

Yuck, Nasty, polluted, Creepy Lake Michigan, Power Plant, Selfish ignorant Snobs and Slobs. YUCK, it is a NASTY place.

Wonderful park to visit. There is boating, swimming in a wonderful big beach, Fishing, Z00, Playground, Spash pad, & restaurant
or you can have a picnic.

Because of lack of parking etc, you have to go in through park pay its $8... To be able to access beach, lighthouse etc

Great park for the family to come and enjoy Lake Michigan. There is a fee per car or you can buy a sticker for multiple visits.

Very nice Beach..water was nice..beach was clean.. lighthouse looked beautiful... bathhouse was in need of some tender loving care...but it was functional and served its purpose. We had a pretty good time and enjoyed the sun and water.

This is a great park with access to the beach and pleasant picnic areas. The beach is very clean and the majority of the beach is very fine sand. The further you walk down the beach the closer you get to private beaches with less people.

People coming to our beach/lake front for the first time are impressed....our natural wonder. Many great restaurants located within walking distance as well as the zoo and splash pad.

Beautiful beach. Visited for a family weekend with adult children. Weather was great. Lodging limited. Fairly easy to find your way around, small town.

Beautiful location and very clean beach. Alot of parking.. Went to zoo in the AM and then hit the beach. Surprised how friendly everyone around was us making our time here even better.

The park is great. There is the beach, light house, picnic areas, restaurant with bar, bathrooms, playgrounds and a zoo. They do charge for parking in the summer. Really a great place to spend a summer day, and only a block from the outlet mall, and casino.

Great place to go for the day! Went and spent some time at the beach. Had a nice new area with bathrooms and a place to get food and a bar that looked fun. Beach was awesome and the water blew me away! Price to park was $7 so not too bad especially if you staying a while. Plenty of playgrounds and places to park.

3 visits to the lighthouse, each a different experience. The first two times were free, the third - 7.00 well spent. This place is great to watch the waves, and see the sun setting over Chicago. Sandy beaches are nice to see as well.

Pleasant place to walk, bike or fish. Clean & well maintained. It is a short walk from parking to lighthouse and beach. A few blocks to outlet mall.

The view of the sunset from here is beautiful. There’s a long concrete walkway from the beach all the way to the pier that has the lighthouse. We did not go to the beach but it is big and appeared to be nice and clean. There was a building for changing and port a pots

Except for the local population, visitors really don't realize the how huge Lake Michigan is. The water is on the cool side until around the 4th of July, but when the warm weather of June comes rolling in, well, the water is refreshing. The yellow sand is hot on the way to the shore of Lake Michigan, but the rewards are great. This is a place to bring your family, come for a day and stay for a week.
An evening walking on the pier and watching the boats coming in and going out, and don't forget, some of the most beautiful sunsets anywhere is a perfect end to a perfect day.
Coming to Washington Park in the first week of August and enjjoy a treat, watching the Gran Prix Boat races, which are quite the spectacle.
One piece of advice, when the wind is out of the north and the waves are churning up the water, make sure to watch your children, and for that matter be careful yourself. Lake Michigan is not to be taken lightly. There are rip currents that can be treacherous. A little common sense can keep your visit to this amazing place, a safe visit, and one you will remember far into the winter.

As well as the best kept secret. Washington Park beach is great. Lotsa parking, fee to get in, but we'll worth it. Only three hours from Indy, and you can't tell you're not at the ocean. The lighthouse is a nice walk along the lake and is beautiful. Large open areas for activities, cook outs, just plain fun. The zoo is across the street, too.

The beach and Washington Park Zoo are both located within Washington Park. $8/car to get in, but worth it to have access to the beach, pier and other amenities.

Large open beach, beautiful lighthouse, cute little affordable zoo. Great picnic area near play ground, zoo and splash pad.

Very clean park with loads to do in the summer. Every weekend between Memorial day and Labor day there is always something going on. Park is even home to the Great Lakes Grand Prix, which is an awesome event to be able to host on Lake Michigan.

An amazing walk along the beach watching the kite boarders, walked out to the lighthouse, very fun, we go every trip.

This park have a lot to do from swimming to walk the pier . And splash pad too. Every walk the beach. It cost $7.00 to get In park. This one of good beach in area .

Michigan City is known for there park, beach and lighthouse. I picked to stay in this city for that reason. Highly disappointed!! Was not able to get any pictures I planned to get. I will never stay in this city. Not to mention the city is very unkept most things are shut down. It is like they don’t want anyone’s business. I will go to LaPorte or one of the near by City next time. Life is somewhat normal there. Beach at Indiana Sand Dunes was great along with the other close by places. Michigan City 👎

Lighthouse was awesome and a. Nice walk. Beach was very crowded and noisy. Beautiful views but not a quiet place for couples.

We stopped here on our way through town to check out the lighthouse. While I felt a fee of $7 per car was quite pricey for our needs, there was plenty on parking available. The beach was clean with ample sand space, a nice cement boardwalk that leads to the light house. Walking down the lighthouse pier was a treat and the view of the sand dunes and Chicago was an added bonus. The kids enjoyed dodging the waves and spending time exploring the lighthouse grounds. Overall a great beach atmosphere with bathhouse. (Bathhouse shower did not work and very few food choices available).

I love this beach! I wish they were a little stricter with littering and the loitering in weekends by many undesirables... but what can you do?
Move down closer to condos... but at condonis part central. Park area is a bunch a trouble makers.

Great beach views and lake access. Lots of things to see and do. Fishing, boating, swimming, kids splash pad. Wide variety of year round events.

Came to Washington Beach to watch the sunset this week. Wow, what a beautiful beach and view! We truly had a wonderful time and can't wait to visit again for an entire day.

We went in July and the first day we got there, the sky turned black and it was COLD! We stayed though because we thought it was such a beautiful area! A couple of days later, the weather cleared (still cold) and we went back. Spent the whole afternoon, walked out to the lighthouse, enjoyed the beach, and just had a great time relaxing and enjoying the beautiful view!!

There is a fee to park on site here, but there are restaurants and the beach is beautiful and very clean. Not at all crowded and life guards were on duty. Sunset was beautiful!

This beach is absolutely beautiful. Very clean. Many trash receptacles available. Convenient parking. There are paved walk ways to the pier, a great playground and picnic area and an adjacent zoo. We did not visit the zoo.

Nice clean beach, great for relaxing in the sun or swimming. The lighthouse has been restored and looks great once again! Great place to spend the day!!!

This was the highlight of our trip to Michigan City. The beach was stunning, clean, not over crowded, lifeguards present & attentive, there was a zoo across the road, dunes, lighthouse/pier, boats to see, all around a great day spent here. I think it was $8 to park. I highly recommend this beach. Oh and a restaurant with roof top seating right off the shore.

We enjoy this park, especially the Thursday night free concert. The park has always been clean, safe, and family friendly.

This park is connected to a beautiful beach with a view at the pier with a lighthouse at the end. Also next door there is a zoo and Old Lighthouse Museum (both open from April to September). But unlike during the summer season in the winter parking by this park and the Lake Michigan is free and almost always empty. I recommend for winter walks and sunsets over the pier.

Enjoyed the beach on a Tuesday afternoon. Beautiful, calm water. Very relaxing. Sand that was perfect for relaxing on. One thing to keep in mind: it is 7 dollars to get in the park, and they only take cash.

Beautiful beach access for a family beach day! Great lighthouse walk and access. Fish on the pier or play on the playground. They have something for everyone! Oh and even have a zoo nearby.

This park is located right off the beaches of Lake Michigan. Clean playground, bathroom, and splash pad. During the summer they offer free movies and fireworks. This park also shares the parking lot with the zoo.

You must go to Washington Park to see the Christmas lights! It is a very large park and there is a lot to see.

We visited the beach after the zoo and had a blast. Water was clear! Very clean! Will come back! Bring sunscreen!

Nice beach, It was pretty clean. Festival was going on, so prolly a little more crowded than normal. Nice place to relax and play in water.

We went here to visit a beach. I have been to beaches in Florida, Maine, and San Diego but in the midwest we are missing a big part needed for a nice beach (an ocean). My youngest child doesn't remember her trips to the beaches and a friend offered this as a suggestion. It had everything i would expect from a beach. The kids had fun playing in the sand, the water was cold but clear. They had a lot of fun. Being in season it did cost $7 to cost but I would expect something to keep up the park. We will definitely visit again. So if you are looking for a beach in the midwest, I would give this a try.

Washington Park has been here for as long as I remember..60+years & then some, very expansive park for the general public to use, they have all types of festivities going on all thru the spring, summer, & fall..music, the outdoor/in water boat show, art festivals, the Zoo across the street, & marina's also nearby, plus Lake Michigan itself..need more food concession stands, & public washrooms would be welcomed for many who come to visit.
Clean Park, well maintained, good for the whole family to enjoy,a quiet picnic, or just play frisbee..lot's of trees & grass, & the sandy beaches !!

Spent the day at the beach. Laid back crowd. Clean sand. Well worth the $7 parking. Little bit chilly for August, but the views were amazing, especially if you have the energy to climb the dunes.

We ranged from grandparents to 3 year olds and everyone have a great time. Easy walking with no hills for the grandparents and plenty of space for the kids to play. Great beach!

Great beach plenty of room to find your own spot. Nice play grounds a splash pad , an a zoo ,for the kids. A awesome place to spend the day ,or wkend . Ther is a very nice rooftop bar an dinning right on the beach. Super place.

Beautiful beach. Nice place to swim in summer. Great fireworks on the 4th. Beautiful marina. Great restaurants. Zoo nearby. Spray park. Concert shell with summer concerts within walking distance. Lots to do there all summer. Lots of events there, too.

It's a large city park next to the waters edge. It's rather plain but there are areas for children to run and play. The park is kept clean and it would be a nice place for a pic nic and a dip in Lake Michigan. (An hour after eating, of course).

Very clean and expansive coast line as well as a park. The beach is well kept and has volleyball nets pre setup for fun. Had a blast with family and friends.

For years the Michigan City lakefront was a seedy mess. Not true anymore. Wow. Beautiful beaches. Plenty of parking. Modern, clean facilities. Perfect for families and sun worshipers.

Nice beach, pretty lake. Water was too cold for me but there were people getting in. Plenty of parking! Beautiful scenery with pier, lighthouse, and marina. The kids enjoyed collecting rocks and watching seagulls!

Large beach area with a lighthouse and walkway along beach and marina area. There is a restaurant and lounge with an upper deck area located in the park itself (I think it is only open during the summer season). Great sunset views and when it is clear you can see the Chicago skyline across Lake Michigan. Be careful as it becomes dark it becomes a little less family friendly (in one visit groups of teenagers generally goofing off and some not so desirable folks hustling a craps game on the boardwalk). It did not seem dangerous but I would advise be safe never sorry. I have never witnessed any of that type of activity during the day in many visits over the years and only the one evening. Large picnic areas are available, a good place to enjoy a day in the sun at the big lake. Also a beautiful spot to check out the ice buildup around the lake in the winter season.

Parkin is $7.00 for an all day pass. The beach is REALY nice and clean. The sand has a higher rock content, however the water is fairly shallow. The attractions in the part (zoo and water park) close at 4pm so plan accordingly.

The beach had nice sand. Not rocky like some of the beaches. You can walk to the lighthouse on the sidewalk all the way. We had 9 people in our group. We took lots of family pictures.

The $8 fee for parking included the park and the zoo and could be used for the entire day even if you left. Parking was really close to the beach. There's a lot of sand in it actually goes pretty deep! The tides are not near as high as about quarter mile down near Mount Baldy. Those tides were dangerous! The only complaint I have is that there was floating garbage in the water. Is this normal for Lake Michigan? This is only the second time I've been to the lake and the first time was in Wisconsin.

Went to the Oasis Splash Pad, our 3-year-old grandson loved it.
Also went to the zoo, it was the perfect size for young children.

I have always lived in the region, but the best time to visit the beach is this time a year, before all the kids get out of school, when the water is so clear, and the sky is blue. Had a blast with a friend and will come back again before summer hits. Always a great place to visit, but always so busy in the summer!

The "Festival of Lights" is very impressive. The whole park is decked out in lights and beautiful to drive through it.

The place is nice but the price of parking is really exaggerated! $20 to park during the visit of the zoo, that is 2 hours, and no benefits related to this parking... a tip: park at the marina, certainly you have to walk 200 meters but at least it is free!!!

We payed the $20 to park because we were on vacation and “thought”we did not care. We were staying in Michigan City and figured we would not venture Far on 4th of July to avoid traffic. It was unfortunately not that impressive to us especially in comparison to other beaches we visited this trip. We did witness a beautiful sunset there which may have been the best part of visit to this particular beach. Not saying I would not return but it is not my first choice of beaches in the area.

Excellent beach! Close parking, clean bath-house. Clean beach. The water was a bright blue and very clear and the water was warm.

The Beach gets busy but the views are worth it. The daily admission cost to enter the park was reasonable. If you are unable to be away on a long vacation, I recommend this short drive for a night or even the weekend. Pack fun things to go enjoy the day at the beach and at sunset enjoy the Chicago skyline in the distance.

This beach is very clean & quiet during the week. I've been here with my family on a weekend also. It was still very clean & kid friendly. Everyone is respectful of others . The beach & lighthouse is beautiful. If you stay later , the sunset is breathtaking.

Stopped at the beach after a visit to the zoo across the street. Was quite impressed with sand, cleanliness, and water shelf. Not near as rocky as some of the beaches up the coast to the north.

The lighthouse is beautiful. The beach and Lake Michigan was beautiful. You can walk up to the lighthouse and look out over Lake Michigan. The lighthouse was worth the trip.

We enjoyed watching the sunset on the beach while we were in Michigan City. The light house is fun to walk to. We sat on the pier and watched the sunset and the boats come and go from the harbor. One boat had a guy playing bagpipes as he returned to the harbor for the night, very cool! The beach is large and the sand is very nice. Lots of walking trails nearby and parking was close. There is a changing room and bathrooms as you enter the beach, which is free. Very nice.

We stopped here on our way back to Iowa and we were so glad we did. Clean beach, great views, plenty of parking. We spent a few hours here and walked out to the lighthouse as well. Wish there was parking closer to the bathhouse. Grabbed lunch right by the marina before leaving town. Will definitely be back.

Sun, surf, sand. It’s like a little touch of the ocean right here in the Midwest. Can’t beat that-what’s not to like? Totally recommend.

There is a lot going on in the Washington Park area. There is, of course, the nice clean beach as well as a zoo, restaurants, lighthouse, and so on. Plenty to do and lots of photo ops.

We arrived late in the morning and had no problem finding a spot for our blanket. The water is so clear and cool. The sand was warm and even though I didn't like the feeling of walking barefoot on the rocks in the sand, the beauty of the entire area made it a minor inconvenience.
My daughters loved looking through the rocks to make a pile of 'pretty' ones. You have to pay $7 to park, but we are from California, so we are used to paying to get into the beach. They even had a lifeguard on duty.
The beach was clean and the seagulls are friendly. There is a grassy dune nearby and a restroom to change in. The lighthouse can be seen from the beach and there is a cement walk out to it if you are in the mood for a short stroll. There are two restaurants nearby, as well as a zoo and a lighthouse museum.
It was a lovely way to spend part of our day during our first trip to Michigan City.

We have always considered this beach our favorite! But, the fireworks show was not a family friendly event! Too many vagrants, fights (amongst adults), drunk people and unsupervised teens! My small children were terrified of all the activity in the parking lot (loud music, speeding cars, cursing, heckling). It took one hour to exit after the event. The police and lifeguards were clearly overwhelmed. We will not be going back for a while.

What a wonderful Christmas wonderland of lights and shapes, a REAL JOY. Lots of hard work and man hours to make this Christmas light show. Enjoyment for kids and adults THANK YOU..

Great Zoo experience, Great views, Good food available.
Wonderful walking paths and boating available.

Great beach! Parking easy, long stretch of beach to select spot from. Enjoyed watching boats and the sunset. The light house is lovely too.

I loved this beach. We were able to walk all the way out to the lighthouse. Wasn't quite clear enough to see Chicago very well but still very neat. Great place to take family pictures.

This park had a little bit of everything.
You had the water park that would be open in the summer months. The lighthouse and catwalk for your selfies. A very nice beach complete with the baywatch lifeguard towers. To the far side you had a grass traditional park area with the little BBQ pits and a few of those kid toys you find in many parks around the country. All of this area had stunning views whether looking to the lake or Chicago in the far distance. I can only imagine this must be hopping in the middle of summer with kids out of school.
We managed to take a number of good photos while in the area before the wind almost blew us away. This really is a magnificent public park. Easily one of the better I have seen in the midwest. They do offer parking, although I am sure there is a charge in the summer months.

We were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the beach was...you would never know you weren't at the ocean! The zoo was nice also.

We rented a slip in the city marina for almost 20 years (while we lived in Illinois) and now we have retired in Michigan City. So we are very familiar with Washington Park (which is where the marina is, as well as public beach and access to the lake. We think this is one of the best beaches on Lake Michigan - great fine sand - and there are plenty of restrooms for the public, which is always nice! Now there are a couple new restaurants and also a place to rent paddle boards, and other beach "toys". You can also walk to the Zoo which is next door. There is SO much to do here - and we are really happy that we moved here!

It was a lovely park! Many sights to see. Beach was very clean and it was a lovely day. Parking fee of $7 seemed a little steep, but all in all worth the trip .

The beach was clean. There was plenty of trash cans close by. The marina bathroom could use some updating. The new beachside restaurant looked very nice but we didn't have a change to eat there.

We visited Washington Park on our way to Chicago to spend a day at the beach. It's a very nice park with a good beach and a scenic lighthouse to explore. I'm not a huge fan of the power plant located directly behind the beach, though...

I love to visit this beach. It is well maintained and has bathrooms available. The sand is super soft and lots of room to spread out. There are sand dunes for the kids to run up and down as well.

The Michigan City Lighthouse is just beautiful. Perfectly located for the most beautiful sunset pictures with Chicago in the backdrop. Perfect for everyone to visit. Splash park, local zoo, outlet mall in walking distance.

Every summer the family and I do a lot of camping. Michiana is one of our favorite camping destinations due to the proximity to Indy and to Lake Michigan. We found the beach at IN Dunes State Park/National Park to be rocky and dirty. We decided to give the beach at Washington Park a try (over 5 summers ago) and have never returned to IN Dunes beach. The water is clear, the sand is fine, and the dunes at Washington park offer a nature made playground. No glass bottles! It is enforced (we found out by CO working beach) but the officers nicely asked us to put in trash (luckily we had cans too). When we go, in August, the water is a good temp for swimming. Be sure to bring shoes/flip flops as the walk to the beach will burn your feet w/out shoes. There is a zoo at Washington Park, but we've not been there (yet). We have taken the train from MI City to the Cubs game, and then camped at MI City Campground. The whole experience makes for an affordable family "beach" vacation without the ocean price tag.

This is my first visit to this beach. I love how close the parking is to the beach and how close you are to the water. It costs $8 to park but your ticket allows in and out privledges all day. The same parking area also gets you to the zoo. I went in the morning and then came back for the sunset. While at the beach all you see is sky, sand and water. Makes you think you are at a Florida beach. Because the beach area is so large, even when it is crowded you still have plenty of space to spread out. Will definitely be coming back again.

Enjoyed walking out on the Pier. It's a beautiful city park right on Lake Michigan. I would not recommend going barefoot in the sand though as I saw some sharp, broken glass. More than I would have expected so wear shoes.

We went here for a nice afternoon walk before heading to do some shopping. The beach area was nice and clean and the parking was more than ample. What a nice way to spend time together. We walked to the lighthouse, however, you cannot go up in it.

This park/beach was a lot of fun. Many families were out with kids enjoying the beach or fishing. We didn't have any luck fishing, but the breach and pier were a lot of fun. We traveled to the lighthouse, enjoying the concrete Boardwalk, sand, park benches and water. We will return when the opportunity arises.

So in this place is a beach, park and the zoo. At different occasions we enjoyed all of these with our family that included a toddler and a teenager. Everyone has fun.

I went for the zoo and take pictures. Disappointing. Hard to get good photos. Otter habitat was good except there no otters in sight. Upgrading going on. Needs it.

I remember going here since I was a kid. We always had fun and I have since brought my kids. I was a little upset because we had a park person tell us that we could no longer feed the geese which we had always done but I understand. Still beautiful and a great family spot.

We come to Washington Park Beach Atleast once a year, and it never disappoints!
It is so large that even when it is crowded you can find areas to be away from others. It is always clean and a good time for my family!

It's really romantic to visit Washington park and walk out to the pier on the evening. The view is great. Chicago skyline can be clearly seen most evenings

Very nice beach. Very clean. Was there for a couple of days with my wife and 2 children. We will definitely visit again.

Easy access beach. Zoo. Had to pay extra for that. Lighthouse nice to walk to. Clean beaches but
Bathrooms icky.

Beautiful lakefront and pier but an extra special visit is Christmas time when the park is transformed with thousands of lights and animated figures. So beautiful and they really do a great job!

We went in April and May to see the Lighthouse. There was no entry or parking fee during this period. Pictures of the pier and lighthouse are a must. But if the wind is from the North you will be sandblasted. The beach is huge and I would guess packed in the peak of summer.

At one time it was a dump then it was a lumber yard that it was an amusement park now it's just fabulous

Enjoyed a wonderful morning walk in early April----Spring just beginning. Blue skies/crisp air. The park is well kept. The lighthouse view is stunning.

The area was great for a quick visit. If we lived in the area and wanted to fish this would be a good place to go as a lot of people were doing trust that. Docking a few stars for the noisy crowds, some of which were teens just hanging out. That is fine, but two groups were being obnoxious.

This beach is family friendly, kids, seniors, teens...all ages. Not as busy as the Dunes.
Bathhouse is always clean, and so is beach area. You can also take a walk out to the lighthouse which is very pleasant. Great beach for summer fun!

Washington Park has something for everyone. Besides hosting some fantastic festivals, music (from classical to blues to rock and more...) and community events, Washington Park offers a nice, sandy, swimming beach with a diverse and friendly crowd, a hike out to the lighthouse on a cement catwalk (friendly fisherpeople on the way), some small dunes for the kids, great examples of ecologically responsible dunelands stewardship, playgrounds, a harbor, parklands, picnic areas, and more. If the New Buffalo, MI, area is supposed to be the start of "Harbor Country," then Washington Park is surely the Gateway to Harbor Country. Within walking distance, you have Bridges Restaurant and the Lighthouse Museum. Although they only charge admission in the summertime ($6 a car - I wish it was free but doubt they could maintain it so well otherwise), it IS a 4-season park. Spectacular sunsets, by the way. And although the concessions within the park can vary from year to year, the newest one is worth a try! Okay, so there is an annoying NIPSCO coal-burning electricity plant just to the west of the park, which makes it impossible to hike the beach westward to Mt. Baldy and the parks on that side of Trail Creek, but you can hike East all the way to Michigan! And unlike Michigan, Indiana supports a "this land is your land" kind of attitude about the 45 miles of shoreline in Lake Michigan - it belongs to the PEOPLE if it is below the high water mark. So, happy hiking westward! I am so glad we retired in this area - if you like nature, Washington Park and the newly revived Arts District in Michigan City will keep you happy, hiking & healthy, and busy all year long! There is NEVER not something to do!

There's so much to do here. You have a huge beach which is usually pretty clean. A water park area. There's plenty of boats to see. Gazebos are available here. Has a fishing area. There is a nice zoo across the street.

Been here many times and always love it! Happened to be here the day of some exciting boat races! Beach was packed but well appointed and easy to navigate! Public restrooms were clean and concession stand and rooftop restaurant were open. Prices are reasonable and food choices were typical fare! Loved it!

The beach was nice. We appreciated the showers by the parking lot. The walk to the lighthouse is easy and the lighthouse is great.
The park does not accept cards which is mildly annoying. They should post a sign saying cash only.

You're going to pay anywhere you park, but it's a shame when you have to park so far away. Oh. It's more for out of state visitors too. So if you have small children make sure you have a stroller and some walking shoes if it's a busy weekend. This is a very busy/crowded area. It's a park, right next to an industrial area. :/ makes sense.

We really enjoyed our time at Washington Park. The day we went the red flags were out so we couldn't swim. With the dangerous rip currents you really must pay attention to their warning flags with recent drownings in the area. We still had lots of fun, safe fun. Our young children (8,5,4) had so much fun climbing the dunes. The views are spectacular. They also found a small pond on the beach to play safely in. After we spent time on the beach, we walked over to the splash pad which was free and purely delightful space for the kids. We also hit up the zoo which was a great time. We didnt make it over to the lighthouse, but we admired it as we drove by. So much to do and see. A great day!

For only $7 this was an easy to access and wonderfully maintained beach area. Very few people there in the morning so it was perfect for a stroll to the lighthouse.

The waves were crazy wild and the water temp was cool so we did not swim but enjoyed sleeping in the sun with our toes in the sand. Watched beautiful sunsets a couple nights. God's beauty and majesty in the wind, waves and sky was breath-taking.

WONDERFUL area for kids or couples to relax at. Trash is well kept with cans every so often and raking of the sand. We went on a weekend in the middle of July and surprisingly was not that crowded! There is a small zoo across the way and a splash pad off the parking lot. You pay for parking once (Usually $5-10) and can leave and re-enter all day.

Washington Park is a lovely spot on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. We enjoyed the camaraderie of the sailing-enthusiasts at the harbor, the beautiful weather on the lake, and a relaxing walk along the beach and out to the lighthouse point. (Well, it would've been relaxing but for the antics of the one child in the party... kept us on our toes!) Picnic areas were available for our use at dinner time. The park's amenities were well-maintained, despite the weathering delivered by the Lake, and the people were friendly and amenable.

This is a great family beach and very popular. Parking can be an issue at different points during the day. It costs to park, but they have in and out if you want to leave to eat. This place has a good sand beach and is next to a marina. There are also great waves versus some other beaches in the area and the water was reasonably warm. It does get deeper the further you go out and there was a riptide warning one of the days we visited. You could spend the whole day there playing on the sand and swimming and hanging out. They do also have handicapped parking. There is a cemented area with picnic tables if you can't go out in the sand. The are basic cement block bathrooms you can change in and an outside shower you can rinse off with. You can bring in umbrellas, chairs, covers, toys and coolers and most every reasonable thing. We had a great time.

Beautiful park. Marina, lighthouse and beach. Best place to get gorgeous sunsets on the water. Went there every night for pics of light house and sunsets. Bliss

Surprisingly nice beach although I wish people would pick up after themselves a little better. There were plenty of trash cans, but still some trash on the beach. It was MOSTLY clean, though. Also would be nice if there were more places to recycle. the amount of aluminum and plastic waste being generated on the beach and going to a landfill is sinful. As usual, I had to take things back with me to ensure things got recycled. If they're going to charge $7 to park (which is fine if it helps keep things clean), they should be able to offer recycling.
Soft sand and clear, calm water (when we were there, anyway) made this a great family beach. Kids could swim and I didn't have to worry so much.

The beach was not far from the parking lot. Alcohol allowed, as long as 50 feet from parking and no glass. Place to dump coals. Went after hours, so no fee to get in (5:00pm). Walk out to the lighthouse to get best pics and view. Loved it!

This is a great place for a nice beach and walk out to the Lighthouse Pier.
Plenty of parking. Fireworks are always the week later after the 4th of July.
Sit right on the beach. its usually the Saturday a week after the 4th weekend.
Great beach clear water and clean sand. You'll like this area.
Sand dunes to walk around in. MC Zoo right across the street.

My husband, 3 yr old daughter, & I had a great family day on the beach during our Indiana Dunes vacation. The beach was clean, & people were either friendly or kept to themselves (nobody acting obnoxious the day we were there, thankfully). There was a nice concession stand, but it didn't open till 5pm on Mondays (the day we were there). So we got McDonald's drive thru (we're on vacation, so we didn't pack a lunch) and came back. There is a $6 fee, I think, to get into the park, but you can leave & come back as long as you keep the little ticket visible from your windshield. We wanted to change clothes & walk down to the lighthouse to watch the sun set; as my daughter & I got to the bathrooms, we found the attendant trying to lock them up for the evening. It wasn't even sunset; I was surprised that they wanted to close things up. He waited for us to change, though...even let a few ladies in after us...which was very nice. Sunset at the lighthouse was absolutely beautiful, lots of people had their cameras set up to capture the image. A great way to introduce our 3 year old to the beach for the first time.

We had a nice time at the beach here bathrooms could be closer but other then that it was an awesome day.

Washington Park and Zoo is wonderful the beach and zoo is so beautiful my family had a great time here on Labor Day weekend the zoo was so clean the kid have so much fun here and the beach is so clean we just love both the beach and the zoo and the cost was so low seven dollar for parking all day for both the beach and the zoo that is for both places seven dollar all together and for the zoo to get in is seven dollar this is a not to miss place for your family

I have lived here all my life and one of the main reasons is our lake front. During the summer you just cant beat it.

Make sure you use lots of spf 100 sunblock (not the spray kind) if you plan on being at the beach in the sun for several hours. The cool breeze and nice temperatures are deceiving when it comes to sunburn! Great place to go when you need down time and to recharge your soul. Loved interacting with the seagulls, the view of the lighthouse and the walk to it was so peaceful. The local town people walking to/from the lighthouse are very friendly. Volleyball nets, view of nice docked boats, fishing, restaurant, restroom available and a big parking area. Cost in June 2015 was $7 per car to enter park.

This park is $7 to get in but you can park rt on the beach if it's not a holiday or an event going on. The beach is large and the sand is clean. There are 2 sets of restrooms. There is also a splash pad right outside of the zoo. You can also walk to the light house and watch the boats go buy or do a little fishing.

Wanted the closest beach to our hotel in Michigan City. We are not from the area and had no idea. We just wanted to hang at the beach not the sand dunes. Parking is $7. On our visit the beach was clean and busy with families. The water was pretty clear and a good swimming area that was marked off for boats. Walked out to lighthouse. Couldn't find a working water fountain at bath house and vending machines not working-bring hydration. Restrooms and showers onsite.

not too crowded, reasonable entrance fee. beach is spacious with plenty of room for everyone - 2 volleyball nets on beach. pier with lighthouse short walk away. restroom facilities at beach. also in park is the zoo & a water park. Blue Chip casino/hotel is nearby - can see the beach from hotel rooms.

Parking it's inexpensive the beach is super clean gorgeous views will definitely come back and recommend to all my friends

A large parking lot (fee to park). Access to the Washington park ZOO,Marina, dunes and a large clean beach, along with a snack building and hosting boat racing and Coho salmon fishing and annual events galore sums up Washington Park.

Picnic areas. Close to zoo and spray park. Beach access and the beach is very clean. Lovely marina. Great venue for everyone in the family.

It is a nice place to relax and enjoy the sand beach on Lake Michigan. Cost you almost nothing and you can spend whole day at the clean nice looking beach. If you got lucky you can get wavy water as we got last time. Feel just like ocean just the water is not salty. Easy access to parking lot and bathrooms. There is also nice Lighthouse you can explore to. Little hills of sand beyond the beach will tire your kids very well. Right cross the street is little zoo you can visit if you get tired of sun. Definitely recommend
for family with kids.

Great place for boating, fishing, walking, picnicking. Every Thursday in the summer, there is live music at the bandshell. There's a Splash Water Park that's inexpensive and kids of all ages will enjoy.

This beach is nice and clean! New bathroom facilities and bar on the third floor. Very convenient as everything in one place: shopping, marina, beach and a lighthouse. Plenty of room to play beach sports too.

We enjoyed a beautiful evening with our grandsons at Washington Park. It has great sand and a beautiful lighthouse.
You must adhere to the warnings posted by the Lifeguards for the Ripcurrents. Many people have drowned over the years.
There is a small zoo across the street if you have children.

We were here on August 31st and had a great time. The beach was very nice and well kept for the number of people there. I do wish the bathroom area was nicer. We did not visit the zoo or splash pad, the kids had so much fun in the water they didn't want to leave. I can see how parking can be a problem, we arrived around 10:30 and did not have any issues, but it really filled up after 11:30. I was happy that we could take floatable toys to this beach, Indiana Dunes State Park does not allow them. We will visit again.

The Michigan City Lighthouse is pretty cool to visit, and the beaches were clean and well-kept. However, there is a nuclear power plant right there, and kind of takes away from the scenery a little bit in my opinion. There are better beaches to visit, but this one wasn't too bad.

Dirty filled with lots of trash and drunk people. Went there since I haven't been in years and it's getting worse...Michigan beaches are much better and cleaner

This is such a lovely park. The boats and the water look so pretty. The beach is nearby and there are all of the amenities a person needs: sun, water, shade and restaurants. It is good for families or just a couple on date night.

My family and I walked the beach after we went to the Washington Park Zoo. It was a very nice beach. We went to a few other beaches during our stay in Michigan City and this was the cleanest and nicest one of the ones we visited.

what an amazing view the water is so calming the boats are beautiful you can just sit and relax and forget about everything take pictures and have fun not worry about anything

We were killing time while waiting for our hotel room to be ready, so we went to check out Washington Park. We walked the length of the beach and admired the Lake. It was very windy and wild that day, so swimming wasn't allowed. The beach wasn't overly crowded when we arrived that evening. It seemed very family friendly.

This is a beautiful beach/park on shores of Lake Michigan. Pay a daily fee ($7 for out of towners) and park for zoo, kids splash pad, beach, lighthouse museum, pier, etc. Lots to do and see, gorgeous sandy beach. Beautiful boats to observe. zoo small and cute. Great view to walk out on from pier.

This is a great park and I'm sure the local residents make good use of it!. Lots of beachfront, lifeguards, trails running up and through the beautiful sand dunes plus beach volleyball courts!

Even in the cold, a visit to the lakeshore and Washington Park is a must when visiting MC. The huge sandy beach and pier allow for great walks or exercise in a peaceful setting. It was in the upper 40's when we visited and we walked all the way to the lighthouse. It was wonderful to see all the people fishing off of the pier and to hear the lake waves crashing on the rocks. We sat and played in the sand for an hour or so and found rocks, shells, and other treasures. There was a lot of debris on the beach, but it is early in the season and clean-up has not begun. It was still beautiful. We then went to look at the gazebo at the front of the park and enjoyed the stone and rock garden with benches and ponds. A hidden gem! even with the empty ponds, this area was magical for my six-year-old.

Great beach to spend the day with family. Beach is clean and not too packed. Keep in mind it is Lake Michigan so the water is cold and you must watch your family when they are in the water!

Good and very clean park.Enjoyed walking out on the Pier. It's a beautiful city park right on Lake Michigan. I would not recommend going barefoot in the sand though as I saw some sharp, broken glass. More than I would...

2 years of trips to this beach is on the beginning we hope. Reasons our family chooses this beach over the others along the lake shore:
1. Parking - while there is a fee of $7 (2017), that is lower than the $12 charged at other nearby beaches and there are plenty of spaces available (even on the weekends). For the most part, you can find a spot that is close to a beach entrance. We don't waste valuable time driving looking for a parking spot or walking long distances from the car. It's worth the $ for us.
2. Clean - all areas of the park are so clean! Plenty of trash cans for people to throw out their garbage in and we've yet to see a can overflowing at the beach or in the park area.
3. Restrooms - not the most ecstatically pleasing however, there are several different restrooms located within the park. Yes, you can show up in street clothes and have a place to change into your bathing suit (one of the questions we asked on our 1st trip).
4. Beach - the sand is powdery perfect (and again, clean). Sand bars located about 10-15 feet off the shore offer some shallow spots to stand on. There are not many rocks or pebbles on this beach.
5. Picnic tables - there are plenty of places to have your lunch without lugging it all the way to the beach.
6. Family friendly - the beach always has a mix of adults and families there. The nice thing is there is room to spread out so that everyone has space to enjoy their time. Room to build sand castles or play Frisbee or simply lay in the sun.
7. The park offers more than just the beach. The zoo, while small, is a good cool weather alternative. Take a walk on the beach to enjoy the view and then pay to go to the zoo for a few more hours of entertainment.

What a nice beach! We needed to get out of town with the kids, but only had a few hours. Washington Park Beach was only about 80 minutes from our home in Chicago. Parking was $20. Bathrooms and changing rooms are available. There were concessions but we didn't buy anything. If I was going to the beach for a day, I would definitely choose this beach.

Washington Park offers great white sand beach and shaded picnic area if you need break from sun. The park is across of a small zoo that can be a good attraction to your little ones. The only reason I am not giving five stars because it can be crowded on weekends.
City park by the beach
Part city park, part beach. The park part has picnic table, a gazebo, trees. The beach part has Lake Michigan & the pier. There's usually an entrance fee, but in April, there seemed to be no need. There were people walking out on the beach. We just drove through.
There's a bathhouse nearby also.
Near Christmas they used to have a nice drive through light show. I don't know if they still do that.
The zoo's parking lot is on the far side of the park as well as the "water Park".
