An interesting depot from years gone by.

By ArleneB435 |

My friend had ridden on a train 20 years ago through Whitefish and remembered the station as quaint so we stopped to spend a bit of time there. It was during off-season so the museum was closed and only a train agent was available which meant we were the only visitors.

First Train Trip.

Arrived from Chicago on the Empire Builder. This station is charming. A lovely setting and very European feel. I loved that the luggage was unloaded on old fashioned wagons.

Step back in time

Charming station- immaculately with with an adjacent historical museum... we found the staff helpful & professional staff!

Only draw back if you are awaiting the AmTrack train, no public rest room on property.

~~ Even if you are not waiting for the Amtrak go visit! It's FREE! ~~

By chventures |

Did you know that the Whitefish Depot is the busiest Amtrak station on the line from Chicago to Seattle? Not only that, there are many freight trains going through. We knew one of our sons would have a blast here as he has always loved trains. Here you can see them right up close. It really enforces how BIG (and long) these freight trains are. We spent a while here watching the trains etc. whilst we waited for the Stumptown Historical Museum, housed in the station, to open. The Stumptown Historical Society actually owns the entire building having purchased it from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1990 for $1 when they no longer wanted it. Thankfully these folks, including hundreds of volunteers,  stepped in to save and restore this beautiful piece of history.

The elderly lady there the day we visited was excited to tell us all that she knew. SO pleasant and eager to make sure that their hard work and dedication to preserving history not be forgotten. The museum is only small but don't miss it. It is FREE so you have nothing to lose.

A Unique and niche-ee little shop with great historical information and a goldmine for train buffs!

By Nattsky |

This depot, houses a museum and gift shop that one can spend hours browsing in and looking at the literature and small exhibits. Centered around the Great Northern railroad and the historical development of rails in that area, the depot is situated right next to an active station, where one can see mile long freight runs as well as passenger trains rolling on through. I've enjoyed this little shop, and the people who work there are always friendly and I've had great conversations there. Always try to stop there when in Whitefish.

Welcome center for HEAVEN.

This is very unique area in the upper western part of the state. Depot is quaint and is an active depot for AmTrack. Would suggest to all to visit. Like a little museum.  Would visit again.

Railroad history of Whitefish, Montana

Small but neat museum in old Amtrak station in Whitefish, Montana. Exhibit details railroad influence in development of area.

Amtrack - Whitefish

By sylvias77734 |

This is a nice quaint depot. I had taken the train from Seattle to Whitefish before and didn't have time to explore the depot. During this trip I spent a couple of hours walking around the depot. They have an exhibit of photos and an old train outside, nice place to visit.

A must-see if you're in Whitefish

By Dave_in_Reno |

The 90-year old Whitefish Depot serves Amtrak's Empire Building line. Well worth a quick visit if you're in the. The Alpine-style Depot features an interesting statue and a vintage Great Northern Railway motor coach.

Not worth a special trip

By 792rachelb |

We toured around the depot and it is historic and well- maintained with a small FREE museum. This was an okay way to pass the time in Whitefish but not a destination by any means.

The gorgeous Whitefish Depot and the monument

By Robby G C |

The Whitefish Depot was so splendid and huge. On both sides they had a train.

There was a monument of a father and his child, explaining about trains and the Whitefish Depot.

Underneath the monument, they showed how hard it was to work here.

A must see!

Worth the visit

By Mike C |

My 80-year old Dad has always been interested in the railroad system so I took him there for a visit. The train activity was quite active so that entertained him for an hour or so. The staff at the depot were very kind in talking with him as he asked many questions regarding the operations, types of natural resources being transported, the role of the conductor and so forth. He left the place so excited on what he learned and now is planning his next trip on taking a train ride across the U.S. He recruited his son (me) to be his travel buddy. I am looking forward to this adventure.

Nice little museum and train station

By Rebecca D |

We took Amtrak from Michigan to East Glacier/Whitefish - a great overnight trip, in a sleeping car bedroom. This charming station has a small museum staffed by "a history buff and a railroad buff" that showcases the history of the area and the railroad - and the depot was easy walking distance to our vacation rental. A small park adjacent is a nice place to rest as you explore Whitefish, just a short walk from downtown restaurants, and watch the trains go by.

Beautiful building

By rhwilkin |

The museum inside also includes a lot on info the Whitefish as well as the railroad. It's a free museum but they do take donations. Well worth the time to visit.

Small yet charming

By grandmommyof6 |

Lovely restored depot building. Small museum with some interesting history. The old "apothecary" cabinet is very nostalgic if older than 50. The only thing kids might be interested in is the old entire outside. Great to see a working train yard.

Cool station

By Joe W |

As a train buff this station is a step back in time.

It is in great condition, and the platform for the trains is nice and wide, which is great when your trying to get on and off the train.

Make sure if you rent a car, hertz is located in the station, making it very easy to pick up and drop off!

The Amtrak employees are nice and well informed about the area!

Amazing Depot and Museum

By LadyAutum |

The actual depot waiting room was closed but we could see it through the glass doors. The floors are black and white checkered. The benches seemed to be beautifully preserved. I would have loved to have been able to go in to see the rest. It looked like the original depot would have been back in the day. This is a working train station with a museum next to it. No charge for the museum. Be sure to sign the guest book. I wish we had more time to see the museum. Many newspaper articles and period pieces.

Historic train station

By rvgolfski |

Our final destination was Whitefish. Luggage arrived in a timely manner. Nice looking station. Museum has a little of everything and the price is right (free). Good view of Big Mountain from trackside.

Nice to visit

By gdi2011 |

Very nice railway station. It is like going back in time, almost waiting to see an old train and locomotive entering the station.

If you enjoy railroads and people watching the depot is fun and educational

By eur0star |

Railroads were important for Whitefish. According to the history materials, Whitefish exists because the railroad built a new line, picked Whitefish for a junction and yard and moved out of Kalispell to Whitefish. All 300 railroad employees in Kalispell were required to move to the new City of Whitefish. From that beginning rail and the city have continued their relationship. Many freight trains go west to Seattle and East to the Midwest through Whitefish. Amtrak sends a train east and west each day. West to Portland and Seattle. That train splits in Spokane westbound and merges eastbound. I think the train heads to and from Chicago. There is a museum in this old depot that covers much of the history. Outside there is a nice restored vehicle the railroad had built to haul passengers and freight to and from Whitefish. It is great to people watch when the Amtrak stops. The depot is within walking distance of downtown and is across the street from the Farmers Market. Railroad buffs, All Aboard!

Small and Friendly

By KikiJamaicanTraveler |

Very very small museum area. But really interesting stuff inside. And the attendant that was on staff when we visited was incredibly friendly and had some of her own stories to share. I was really glad we stopped in.

History worth discovering

By IDsunshine101 |

A fun and historic spot and yet still very much a real working area. Unfortunately we didn’t get a tour due to covid 19.

Nice quaint piece of history

By Damien O |

Amazing little station. Good museum for the train station, good pieces of history preserved within an operating station

Small museum

By JJG |

Worthwhile short stop. Neat architectural building and well kept grounds in working train station. Small one room historical museum free.

All Aboard!

By LightingBolts |

Whitefish Depot is worth a look if you are interested in trains and local history. A working station and rail yard so something is always going on..The trains still roll here and when we were there a west bound freight that was over a mile long rolled through at low speed. Keep your kids in hand. The Whitefish Depot Museum was extremely interesting. We spent most of our time in there reading and looking at the artifacts and collections. Ask about the rare fur bearing trout! It’s all good and I left with a greater appreciation for Whitefish and the pioneers who settled the area. Whitefish has a colorful past. Time well spent.

Local Museum

By Vanessa P |

This place is a local museum as a train station as well. We saw a 100 years old floor weight. Super cool! The museum has simple pieces to demonstrate the local history.

Quaint, old time train station.

By Nashville_brent_65 |

We just moseyed down here after dinner and it's a cool looking train station.
It still has that old fashioned look and feel about it.
The Amtrak train came in while we were down there so that was a bonus.

Behind the trains you can see the ski slopes of the Big Mountain.

Whitefish is a neat little town.

Loved the history in the depot!

By AngCrab |

We met Flossie (who works in the depot). She was a shining star...she shared Whitefish history with us, provided us with touring tips, and encouraged us to move to Montana. We also met her husband, Jack -what a special couple! Thanks, Flossie for all of your tour tips! ❤️

Train to Glacier National Park

By FarAway278557 |

Took the train from Whitefish to West Glacier. Walked to Glacier Guides and Montana Raft for a whole day of fun. Walked back to West Glacier to take it back to Whitefish. Train was 3 hours late. That gave us time to eat a Bison burger and have a brew at the restaurant across the street.

Very quiet and the museum is great

By Janeen B |

The depot was clean and friendly. They closed for lunch, but was able to go around outside and visit the museum.

good if you like trains

By dorothy m |

lovely old station, well kept ,small museum but closed when we visited. It seemed a busy station with 3 trains in and out while we were there, really good if you like trains

It's Free and Small

By Dogpilot |

I think TripAdvisor is talking about the little museum there at the train depot? The museum is small, one room and it's full of interesting items related to trains and the railroad. If your in town and little ones take them; they might get a kick out it and learn something about train history. The depot is where you buy a ticket to travel to a destination by train an wait for it to arrive so you can start your journey.

Model Depot

By Raymond N |

A trip on the Empire Builder is magical. The Whitefish Depot is the crown jewel of the route. One can imagine stepping off the train in Switzerland or Germany. Surrounded by mountains, the Depot is a welcome stop on a long journey.

Just passing through

By worldshopper27 |

Beautiful old building nice history. We really just passed through after getting off the East bound Empire Builder.

Great Train Depot

By Herbalgirl10 |

Very cool place to spend some time. The train was actually in the station when we arrived. Scenic and functional building in Whitefish.

Stumptown Railway Station

By Hoss98057 |

A walk back in time, modernized.

Comfortable connection with our past, while being a hub for many of today's travelers.

Quaint city train museum

By ScottandJanelle |

The depot is a beautiful old building and the museum inside offers a quaint exposure to a part of the town that help set its history. There are some interesting displays and some good reading of newspaper articles and old stories. Outside the depot are some displays of train-related equipment. It's good for a quick diversion and a rest at the park across the street, but not recommended as a special destination.

May 2019

By Reed S |

This Tudor style train station is right near the town center of Whitefish. Its lower floor holds the Amtrak waiting room, baggage storage and car rental agencies. There is WiFi available along with some vending machines. On the one side is a local area museum. Outside there are some seating areas and exhibits of when it was the Great Northern railway. Its location by downtown offers a lot of shopping and restaurant options. It does have staggered hours throughout the day--according to train and bus schedules. This station is a nice place to spend a few minutes waiting.

Interesting little museum

By Terri B |

I spent a happy 30 minutes or so looking at the well-presented displays at the little Whitefish Depot Museum. There is a nice selection of train memorabilia and local items of interest. The lady at the desk is very friendly. The train depot itself is a little gem of a space.

Wonderful Historic Train Station

By Rene M |

Loved this historic train station. The station is still operational with 2 passenger trains arriving daily. A rail fan's true delight.

Great Train Station

By Shawna S |

My daughters and I have 3 or 4 trips from Whitefish to Spokane and back. I love taking Amtrak, this is such a nice train ride, and we are doing it again on August 3, I am so excited.

Gives a good overview

By alib2018963 |

Used Amtrak to get to Whitefish and stayed there overnight. The rail depot has some interesting information and artefacts. Good for passing an hour and finding out history.

Cool to see a working, historical depot

By cathi t |

The depot is a nice place to stop while in Whitefish. The museum is little and quaint but has some interesting things in it. The building is a cool design, plus it's close to downtown. I parked at the depot, ate lunch in the park and then walked up through the town. The depot is a good place to take a quiet break and use the restroom. I missed the amtrak that day as it comes once in the morning and once in the evening. Would have liked to see a train of people come through.

Historical Whitefish Train Station

By MontanaTrace |

Built in 1928, designed to look like an alpine hotel. Bring your camera, it's beautiful. Even if you aren't going anywhere by train, this should be a destination. The railroad was going to abandon the deteriorating station when the Stumptown Historical Society made a bid to buy and restore. Your visit will be a step back in time. AMTRAK's Empire Builder comes thru. More train passengers are All Aboard in Whitefish than any station from St. Paul to the west coast. Small but packed, the museum is also a good visit.

Small museum in an interesting building

By Claude M |

The museum is small and has a collection of pictures, artifacts, and news clippings to illustrate the town's history. All of it was centered around logging and tourism to Glacier National Park.

fun old depot

By dsdmontana |

A visit back in time with gret history for this old railroad town. They had a coffe shop when I was in there and it just felt like the older days.

Rail Station

By Eric G |

Not a full service station but attractive building and the staff there will help provide directions. It is close to amenities
Too bad Amtrak does not have more secure and user friendly bicycle handling on this leg. The Vancouver BC to Seattle leg is better.

Tudor Revival Architecture Train Station In Whitefish ,MT

By Jordan B |

The first time I arrived at the Great Northern Depot it was snowing. It looked like a winter wonderland. Very strange looking building for a train station. Tudor Revival type architecture. The times I have been there, the staff has been very helpful and friendly. I usually fly into Spokane and catch the Empire Builder train into Whitefish for my annual ski trip. You feel quite safe at the Whitefish depot, no shifty characters or drunks hanging around. Spokane is a little rougher.
You walk one block from the station and you are in the commercial area of Whitefish. There is a micro brewery , restaurants, pizza parlors, and even a small casino within two blocks. This train station has lots of charm and very clean.

Rush to the Museum!

By M&AEagle |

You can't miss the Whitefish Depot. It's a standout building; wonderful architecture and beautifully maintained.

The highlight for us: the museum. It's right there in the depot. And it's free.

When we walked in, a nice, older lady was there to greet us, and asked that we sign the visitor registry. In the background, Rush Limbaugh was on the radio, the volume turned on high. Only in Montana. (We loved it!)

The museum is a smallish room. It has galleys of old newspapers, photos, and interesting items behind glass displays. Lots of Whitefish history and stories about local characters of bygone days.

It you like to gain a "sense of place" when you travel, visit the museum at Whitefish Depot. It's interesting, fun, and you might even catch the Rush Limbaugh Show, too!

Neat history of the area

By LibbyMY |

This is an active train location. There is interesting history of the station as well as a museum. There is also the original baggage scale in the lobby.

Past history preserved

By Adventurer2day |

Worth stopping to see the architecture of the past.besutiful building, but small space allocated for the history, but worth a visit to see how train depots once were constructed.
Hope it stays in place for generations to come.
Stay off tracks-trains still runnning!

Great opportunity to learn about the history of the area.

By Pam M |

Volunteers were excellent! They provided information and answered questions. This is a small museum, same building as Amtrak station. Don't just visit here when you are catching a train. This is worth a visit on its own. Talk to people, don't just run through the exhibits.

Beautiful national landmark

By nanagram11 |

We love the Whitefish AMTRAK station. It is so welcoming at the end of our long train ride. (We also love the train ride itself!) This station is an excellent history lesson and prepares the visitor for the culture and environment of the Whitefish area.

an old -fashioned museum

By ALISON H |

By modern standards the Whitefish Depot Museum is a bit of a jumble . I think everything the cutators have been given that refers to the community's past is on display ! However it is testimony to a community that wanted to preserve its past for posterity and the building in which it is has been restored with loving care by voluntary effort , Much of the contents refer to the town's railway past : it's an important station on the route of the Amtrak Empire Builder that travels between Chicogo and Seattle . However there is much to remind the visitor of Whitefish formerly Stumpstown , which began its existence as a logging centre . The volunteer guide was on hand to answer questions and fill in the gaps . We are glad we took the advice of the Art Gallery owner / tourist adviser who suggested we visit .

Huge Amtrak stop

By David H |

Huge Amtrak stop and Gift Shop with a quaint museum. Travel back in time and view pieces and photos of Early Whitefish. Station is clean and well kept. Just to the SE is a park with benches and tables just ready for a picnic.

Quaint and charming

By iluvcello |

Love the old charm of this train station. Has a museum next door which we didn't see. Its near downtown Whitefish.

Loved the train!

By Gigi |

Will definitely do this again! The views were amazing & the staff too! I wish I’d known about this years ago!

Great place if you love trains

By LorandAl |

Museum is awesome. Watched trains from depot. Great place if you love trains! Will definitely be back!

Almost a museum

By phat_dawg_21 |

The depot was a surprise. From the outside, it looks like an architecturally interesting building. Inside, it is still and active Amtrak station, but there are a lot of artifacts from earlier times. It was almost like a mini railroad museum.

We learned that it houses the oldest Hertz Rental Agency from signage in the lobby and from the owner who was happy to talk about the old photos.

Beautiful and Historic

By Kim V |

When youre in Whitefish, make sure to stop by the train depot. Not only is it a beautiful building, it has a free museum that has so much local history in it about the local area. Lots of memorabilia, and things to go through. Kids will love the frequent trains going through the station as well

A small station building with so much history and character! A must-see even if you're not a railway fan!

By The_Concierge_8 |

Find a reason to visit The Great Northern Railway Whitefish Depot/ Amtrak station even if you're not a rail fanatic or traveling via train. The Depot is historic and filled with character inside and out.

Apparently, Whitefish Depot is the busiest Amtrak stop between Seattle and Minneapolis!
It houses the Whitefish Museum which is small but contains a treasure-trove of information on the town.

Inside the station you will find the oldest Hertz car rental licensee in the country run by the Duff family for more than 60 years! Who knew!

You’ll find visitors admiring and standing on the large old-fashioned floor scale that still works.
And if you go out the front doors and walk along the platform, the view of the station building itself is lovely from that perspective. Built in the 1920’s, the timber building resembles a traditional Swiss Chalet. Best photos are taken in the morning!
There are public washrooms inside which are clean and well-kept.

To end your visit, there's a little green park right next door to the Station building with a large Mountain goat sculpture enclosure - nice for grabbing a bite while soaking up the sun, especially in the colder months while awaiting your train and that perfect morning photo!

Nice period building with historical data and a nice Mountain Goat display.

By terryLCO |

Went by just to see what it was and the building itself is beautifully preserved and has an information center inside. It is worth a stop by. Also has a large stuffed Mountain Goat in a glass case if you want a close up look at one.

Great small museum near the train station

By MK |

Good spot to soak in some history while you are in Whitefish. I was impressed by the exhibits and things to see at this museum.

Lovely Curator in the Museum

By linperk |

This was our first experience taking the train and had time the night before our departure to check out the depot. The museum was open when we got there and a very kind and knowledgable "young" lady was at the desk. She was able to tell us about some of the things we were looking at and gave us the history behind the depot itself. She and 30 other members of the historical society wanted to save the depot, so they bought it and restored it to it's current condition. She was afraid that as the members of her group age that no one will take over for them. They are hoping that the youth of their community will step up someday.

The following morning we checked our luggage and waited for the train in the lobby of the depot. Lots of history in this building!

CLOSED FROM 2P-4P

By GWushington |

Looked amazing from the outside! But they were closed from 2PM-4PM. Hopefully this knowledge will keep others from wasting their time. ALSO Parking was very difficult

Worth a stop!

By CATTSAR |

Even though this has been upgraded, there is still the fell of the original depot. It is a great monument and through back to the time when train service was vital to Montana. Fully equipped with scales and other necessities for train travel there is also a great time honored ticket counter. The black and white checkered floor is classic. The attached museum and gift shop though small is very much worth the few minutes it takes to view it and is educational as well. The life sized stuffed Polar Bear that greets you is first rate. This is surely worth a bit of time while visiting downtown Whitefish.

Clean, historic, friendly

By TravelingProfessor |

A wonderful little station to wait for a train in. Clean restrooms, very nice & helpful staff. If you're going to rent a car here to drive to Glacier NP, rent Hertz. There isn't actually a desk there for dollar or budget, and crappy cell service (att only), and the Hertz guy is way pleasant and helpful and actually there to meet the trains.

Nice station

By Crystal M |

Very nice train station with lots of history. Within walking distance to downtown. Has a Hertz car rental in the station

Nice building

By Dara-Khmer |

It's like stepping back in time to when railway was king. It's a beautiful building to look at and located right in town making it worth a look

A glimpse of the past

By deedee1951 |

The 90 year old depot is still the amtrak station. There is a small local town museum inside with great old pictures , trains things and antiques. No admission fee although donations are appreciated.old train and lots of freight cars etc in yard behind museum . Kids will enjoy. Takes 15-20 minutes. Wheelchair accessible

It's what you think of for a Rocky Mountain Train Station

By Joannie B |

This quaint train station is the picture perfect location to capture the feel of what it must have been like when train travel was king and people came to the area for skiing and adventure. It shows it's age a bit but the building is beautiful and worth at least a quick visit.

Pleasant Diversion

By esleep |

A pleasant diversion in downtown Whitefish. A bit of still operational history and a neat museum at the depot on the station's past

Looking for specific book.

By asiamir |

Was unable to find the book "From Stumptown to Skitown"
at local bookstore but was able to find here.
They also had lots of facts about early days of Whitefish.

Great building

By SFuller12 |

The depot is beautiful. Very well preserved and the museum is quite nice. It is a working Amtrak station and it fun watching the trains come in. Too bad there isn't a restaurant/bar here...it would be an awesome location.

Old World treat.

By Dennis E |

You feel as though you are in Europe. So much to see in Whitefish. The people are so friendly and helpful.

A Highlight of Whitefish

By Karen P |

A wonderfully complete railway museum. Volunteer staff member very friendly and helpful. An interesting assortment of antiques including quilts, Indian beaded items, a vast collection of a drug store probably from the 1930’s or 40’s, toys, and lots and lots of railway memorabilia or all kinds. Neat things to purchase also. There were lots of people visiting the day we went, so it must be popular, but it wasn’t overcrowded. Was open on a Monday which was especially nice since a lot of museums are close don Mondays, and this was a bonus.

A real surprise with a lot of history packed into one small room

By sicuani |

I was with a group of former Lake McDonald Lodge staff members who were getting together approximately 50 years after working in Glacier between 1965 and 1970. Since the Lake McDonald side of the park was closed due to forest fires when we visited in early September of 2017, about ten of us went for a picnic in front of the Whitefish Train Station. Other members of our group had visited the Museum in the Train Station and we did the same. We were not disappointed. Flossie, the woman who is a shareholder of the train station which was purchased by eight individuals who bought what was then a run down building for a dollar years ago, was there to tell us the history of the Station where her father had worked. She was great and full of information. She also was quite sweet when we heard her ask her husband to go home and make sure and take the dog out for a walk. The museum is full of railroad memorabilia and amazing posters from the day of the Great Northern. There is even a fur coated fish which was "caught" in Iceberg Lake, not far from Many Glacier. A great way to spend about 45 minutes to an hour. Then take a look at the train station itself. You won't be disappointed. And say hi Flossie too.

Working Amtrak Depot and Museum

By Jackie M |

The museum of the trains and the Whitefish area was very interesting. I loved the old photos and newspaper clippings from the area. The Amtrak Depot was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful.

Amtrak to Whitefish

By VicCalore |

The depot at Whitefish is where we arrive via Amtrak & leave via Amtrak. We find the depot clean with clean bathrooms as well & a friendly helpfull service staff. Both the inside & outside display local displays of interest.

Like a movie set

By CTTravelers_too |

The wood benches and paneling are well kept and look and feel so out of time. In walking in to the depot we were hit with a feeling of erverence for the place. We were in awe of the living history we stood in and spoke in hushed tones as if we were in an old library.

On the other side of the depot is a small museum with a lot of memorabilia. Outside was a bus that was once used by The Great Northern RR and a vintage car (it was unlocked so we were able to peak inside).

This is worth a stop if you are walking around Whitefish.

Quaint. Visit the Museum Next Door

By Ohbygeorge |

This 'depot' although wonderful to look at is not visitor friendly. It is only available for Amtrak passengers. You cannot spend much anytime inside; just limited time checking in, purchading tickets and debarking. The rest rooms are off limits unless you are a paying passenger a nd the limited counter help is not. However there is rich railroading history in Whitefish and a short visit to the museum next door can be more pleasant. . The museum hours are limited, call ahead 862-0067. It is Stumptown Historical Society volunteer crew that operates the museum .Parking is sketchy. It is across the street from a little park that is over used during the summer. The whole area is a mess on Tuesday afternoons from May thru October due to the massive peddler's market. It is advertised as a farmer's market, but there are very little farmers at that market. Skip the depot and visit the museum early in the day. Some parking a block away to the east behind a great little library.

Amtrak did it right

By TAMAN1951 |

Many stations located in no so great locations in other cities but not so here.

Very clean and pleasant.

This makes a great trip from Spokane to a wonderful destination.

If all locations were like this and schedules were better more folks would ride trains.

Mosey on through

By Santo R |

We went to the museum to spend a little bit of time getting to learn about the town. There was not a lot of space but there was a lot of information and memorabilia to peruse. The working train depot has been purposely left in the bygone era and a is very warm and welcoming example of the days gone by. There is no charge for this excursion and is a good way to learn about how Whitefish roots were started. It's worth a bit of your time.

Whitefish Railroad History Explored

By Ryan E |

During my recent visit to the Whitefish, Montana area, I had the opportunity to visit the Amtrak Station.

Whitefish is a Railroad Town and the Railroad Depot is an excellent place to learn more about the Great Northern Railroad, the town's history and meet some great locals.

The Railroad Depot has a few outdoor displays including a Great Northern Railroad Switcher Engine, Bus and Sculptures.

In the Depot, there is a local museum with excellent displays and the opportunity to meet some Whitefish locals who were very helpful with providing area information and further historical information.

The Hertz Rental Car Location inside of the Depot is the oldest Hertz Franchise Location in the Country and the owner was a pleasure to speak to. Not only did he assist us with our Rental Car Needs but he also provided some great history of the area and places to visit.

There is a sense of community and family in Whitefish that is often misplaced in larger towns. The people are as important in the history of Whitefish as the Railroad is and I highly recommend visiting the Railroad Depot during your travels to the Whitefish area.

Great place to hang out while waiting for the train!

By Ellisa F |

Not a whole lot going on inside the station, but you if you can brave the cold, you can stand outside and watch BNSF freight trains while you wait for your Amtrak train to come in.

Very interesting

By clyde k |

Being a railroad buff it was nice to get to see what made Whitefish famous. It was a pleasant visit to the depot, mostly because of the lady at the desk. We had a nice chat about the city government and how forward thinking the people of Whitefish are about the town. We discussed how many people donated both time and money to get the town into the diamond it is today. The displays were many and nice place to get out of the rain for some local history.

A nice place to wait for the train.

The depot was very clean and interesting, with a couple of bronze sculptures and an old train bus outside for character. The toilets were clean and our brief visit was enjoyable.

A beautiful throw back to history but fully functional as well. We took the train from St Paul and back. The staff was great here.

Terrific little museum

By Ardy52 |

It was officially closed but a staff member kindly let us enter and so enjoyed seeing the amazing history in photos. We were told of early years and walked around the “working” waiting room of the train!

Neat old train station

By Spokaneman1949 |

WE came by train so we had to use the depot. It is adequate, way better than say the spokane station and had a good deal of history. There is a small museum that is worth checking out.

Former railroad employee worked in the museum the day we visited. Had all kinds of history and tidbits to share. Small museum but packed with local memorabilia not just railroad.

Rainy day fun

By BusterBear1234 |

Enjoyed relaxing time looking at local history for Whitefish area at the railroad museum. It brings back memories from childhood. Displays were varied. Well lighted for viewing. Pleasant atmosphere. Nice activity for rainy day.

Very well done local history and train museum. I stayed an hour or two. Nicely landscaped. Restrooms not available. Courteous volunteer host.

By Tanya T |

Decided to skip GNPark one day while on vacation & check out what was around in nearby towns. Stumbled upon Whitefish, & was so happy we did. First stop was the Train Depot. Very small train station & museum, but so worth stopping for.
The sweet elderly lady on volunteer duty was the cutest, sweetest, little thing & she seemed so proud showing off the museum items that I'm sure brought back many good ole day memories for her.
The items on display were very interesting and well thought out. Really took you back in time.
Afterwards we walked around the nice grounds & happened to notice a Freight train about to leave. So we waited & as the engine drove by the Engineer tipped his hat and made our trip complete.
Definitely stop by the depot if you are in Whitefish & you are the small museum type. It made the rest of our day in Whitefish so interesting since we had background info of the town fresh in our minds.

Historic Amtrak Depot

By Kathleen S |

Lovely to look at and lovely to spend time . There is even a local history museum attached and old car from the first and original Hertz car rental company

Great train station - very nostalgic!

By Lolo_Moana_Wahine |

The museum was closed even though the hours said it was supposed to be open, so we were a bit disappointed, but just looking through the windows brings to mind the hey day of train travel - loved visiting the grounds!

Cool historic vibe

We LOVE picking up and sending off our college son from this depot! Feels like stepping back in time while enjoying the modern convenience of Amtrak!

Well worth a 30-minute pop in trip if you are in Whitefish. Cool architecture, a nice local museum with helpful staff.

Interesting displays

By joy12Blairsville_GA |

The Whitefish Depot is so amazing in its variety of well presented displays on the history of Whitefish and the train origins. You could easily spend an hour or two enjoying all that there is to see. While we were there a lady attendant was most helpful in answering questions and pointing out interesting items. The Whitefish Depot building is a historic building and well worth a walk around.

Train into Whitefish --- the best of the northwest

By Wendy O |

We took the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago and stayed one night in Whitefish. Cute town - stay at the Lodge at Whitefish if you can. The station and town are adorable.

Grumpy Clerk but easy check in

By Emily T |

As seems to be the standard for Amway Train Station Clerks, the check in clerk was grumpy and basically just got the job done. But we got our luggage checked and got seats on the train. Not much else to say.

Cozy

By deb1t2018 |

The people are so helpful and nice. Willing to help with anything. Nice clean and small depot, When we got in the gentleman was there to help you rent a car, give directions. When we left he was very helpful in letting us know when the train was going to arrive, how many people were on the train and what car we were going to be in.

Good Depot!

By pomaijensen |

There are only 3 car rentals here. Budget, Hertz and Dollar. Easy pick up and drop off. Bathrooms inside.

Feel a sense of history!

By Kyadventurer547 |

Have fallen in love with traveling by train and the Whitefish Depot exemplifies the charm that comes with train travel! The Hertz location is he oldest licensee for Hertz and he man that helped us I believe is he current owner and he was friendly and in a word "cool"! Really help set the tone for the trip once we arrived from Amtrak!

Nice stop in Whitefish

By Alana |

The depot had a nice little museum and the employees were really sweet and seemed to take pride in their job and surroundings. We stopped in and looked around and were glad that we took time out to visit.

Small but nice

By adventurer444 |

This little museum was a surprise. We were doing the walking tour around towm. We had to wait for someone to open up the door but it felt like we were waiting for the train. I had more inside than it first appeared. The man volunteering knew quite abit about some of the displays. It was quiet and a nice place to visit.

Wonderful surprise in downtown Whitefish

By Ben B |

Train stations in smaller centres are generally petit, but this a grand building with a delightful waiting room. There are lots of artifacts on display, and the bright black and white checker floor make it very fun and inviting. Generally, they have two trains a day come through, so check schedules, and you might be able to get the entire rail experience. Note: long-distance trains out here are frequently a bit late, so to actually see the train go through, some flexibility is needed.

Restored train station

By witraveler225 |

Came and left on Amtrak. This is a beautiful restored station. Trains actually stop here. Very nice. Upper level is used by the Burlington Northern Railroad. Lots of trains pass by here.

Interesting Place

By darrellkg7modjc |

Historic depot, the museum store is usually not open. Could have more historic photos, like has been done at the East Glacier depot.

Wrong Time to Visit

By Charming_Bird |

The location and grounds are very pretty. The park across the street, beautiful. However, the station itself was not open during the time we visited, which was early afternoon. Opens at 5pm - 7am .

Lovely Building, Interesting History

By CrankingChick |

We took a walk around downtown and stopped by the picturesque historic depot built in the Tudor style (1927, National Register of Historic Places). It has been carefully maintained and restored, and still welcomes visitors arriving by rail to this day. Inside there is a small museum (free, 10am-4pm daily except Sunday) and displays about the railroad and local history. I found the Hertz rental car office particularly charming; it is the oldest Hertz licensee in the US and has been operated by the Duff family for more than 60 years. Outside there are some displays of railroad rolling stock and The Bruck, a custom-built bus-truck combination that was used to transport passengers and their luggage between Whitefish and Kalispell. The weekend we visited, there was an arts and crafts show going on the the adjacent Depot Park which offered more to explore. I really enjoyed our stroll around the depot and town; there are paved trails that lead from here to the City Beach and also south along the banks of the Whitefish River.

Pleasant Surprise!

By Paula - The Canadian Explorer |

We discovered the Depot by accident (not in our original plans). The history of this place is rich, and you can picture yourself back in the time.

What a Find on a Rainy Day!

By VacaCouple2014 |

This Amtrak station also houses the Montana museum and It is worth a visit. They have so much history packed in this one room museum. The staff are very friendly and you cannot help but spend at least an hour reading about the incredible history of this area.

Cool Old Building and Museum

By Mary H |

I liked the Depot building and tiny museum very much, but after our Amtrak train was over four hours late, I was really ready to look at something else.

Great history here.

By rbwilwin |

They have a museum of the area, local writers and train history. Lots of items from the area and good information. Good place to take kids for local interest if coming from out of town.

old fashioned and adequate

By Robert H |

An older train station distinguished by the oldest Hertz rental agency in the entire country, run by a very friendly, helpful member of the family that originated the business.

Traveled by train to Whitefish MT. This Depot is full of history to read about as you start your trip. Takes you back in time.

Overview (inside and out) of Whitefish Depot

By annegentry31 |

I did not travel recently from the Depot but am frequently in the area. It is interesting from the outside as not only great view of Big Mt but an outdated train on the premises.

The inside has several pictures of the old train station and local areas. There are several venues for rental cars and a very interesting one that has been there for many many years. Also a piano that was donated in memory of a family member. There is an area to purchase soft drinks, chips, candy, etc at a reasonable price.

Loved the Depot

By rodjk37 |

This is a great old depot; very well-maintained - a traditional & classic style. I went inside, too and took lots of photos of both the inside and the outside.

Excellent small depot with museum

By Pat S |

Love the interior of the depot; the one part of the building is the museum and it has a lot of very old antique items and photographs. It was excellent and tons of stuff in a fairly small area. Definitely worth going into

Surprise it's a museum

By Jennifer W |

A nice surprise, I was strolling downtown and heading towards the train station when I noticed there was a museum. It's only one room off the train station waiting room ( and it's free) but it is stocked full of stuff, mostly train related. Fun to browse through all the items.

Love ❤️ to watch trains 🚂

By Mike C |

I love watching trains 🚂 come and go at this depot. You can see passenger and cargo trains going in an east or west direction. The depot building is old but historical and is well maintained. This depot is a busy place and is right next to the quaint town of Whitefish.

Historic depot

By stjoe14 |

This depot has been beautifully restored. I loved the rack of books for sale for one dollar on the honor system. I found a great read for the long train trip to Tilliston, N.D.

It's a train depot

By FXDL07 |

The museum at the east end is small but interesting, focusing on area railroad history. The other end of the first floor is Amtrak. BNSF Railway occupies the upper floors. Do not wander along the tracks! It's a no trespassing area and you can be cited or even arrested. The railroad cop there can be pretty mean.

The station master was super friendly and helpful; and it was warm and cozy inside!

By Tamara H |

We really loved this depot and all it had to offer. When we went in early in the day, the station master told us just what to do if we wanted our luggage checked and the 'right time' to arrive if we wanted to do so. What a breath of fresh air to have someone so down to earth and friendly. We arrived early as he suggested and our bags and snowboard were safely stored. It was warm and cozy inside with clean restrooms and vending machines. They even had TV's which I ignored because there was enough history and pictures in the structure to keep your mind engaged. When it got close to departure time, tons of people came rushing in with skis, boards and bags only to find it may not make it onto their train that night. Through it all, the station master remained calm and polite with a smile on his face. Our only regret; that when we went to go through the historical museum they have on site (it looked amazing) - it had closed at 3:00 P.M. due to winter hours. We hope to go back again in the future.

Time Travel

What an interesting place to visit - like you're in a time capsule to the old days. Great museum with lots of history. Sit down on the bench beside the tracks and watch the trains come and go ... Both kids and adults love the action.

Such a cute place to see the cool Bavarian architecture and learn about the history of the railway and Whitefish.

The train to Whitefish, Mt. From Red Wing, Mn. is amazing with views to die for. I was in a roomette and loved the privacy. I had stellar car attendants both to and from Whitefish. Can't wait to go back.

A tale of two reviews

By Campmaster55 |

There are two ways to review the Whitefish Depot Museum: As a fan of railroads; or as somebody that is not a fan.

For Rail Fans:
This is an awesome glimpse into the traditional small town rail system. The depot is much like it would have been 75 years ago. The attached small museum details the evolution of life in Whitefish as it related to the railroad. Outside of the museum, there is one small locomotive and a Great Northern "Bruck" (a combination truck and bus used to move passengers around town). It is a must see!

For Non-Rail Fans:
This is a tiny museum with a few small displays. It is attached to a small passenger depot. It's also very close to a vibrant downtown area with lots of cool and quirky shops and eating establishments.

As a rail fan myself, I thought it was well worth the trip. The rest of the group... well, not so much.

But they are not the ones writing the review. :)

Well Kept History

By dmittleman |

This beautiful train station is a fantastic building. Well kept with some great old locomotives on the grounds, you can wander around it freely. There is a small museum inside which keeps relatively short hours but is worthwhile if it happens to be open when you are there. But don't make a special effort for the museum. Make one to see the building.

Historic and charming

By David E J |

Nice place to wait for the train - rental cars on site. Couple of blocks from the downtown area. Small museum in the building.

Worth a Visit

By Dale W |

There are two parts to see here at the depot. One is the actual depot itself and the other is the small museum on the opposite end of the depot area. The depot itself is worth a visit to see the well-preseved features of an old depot. The wooden benches, wood floor, and the (original?) scale are all there. The museum is interesting for anyone who is interested in local highlights and some train memorabilia.
Note: No photos are allowed inside the museum.
