Enjoyed our visit

By Scott M |

Only credit cards accepted for $10 a person entrance. If you have not read all about them, there is a lot of good information here. We did a ranger talk, but did not do a ranger tour. The monument itself is up a hill and entirely unshaded walk. Not great on a hot sunny summer day. Some educational stuff inside. The actual hangar and flight location is a short walk from the visitor center.

Historic learning experience

Our bus tour stopped here during a blustery windy Northeaster. Several things to explore within the museum including a ranger presentation. Many choose to walk the park over to the memorials. You can also drive to them too.

Nice Monument

By Lisa S |

This is a great monument to visit. Don’t miss the talk by the volunteer, held outside, especially if you read David McCullough’s book. It lasted about 30 mins and it was HOT in the sun! If you have easy carry chairs, here’s my tip, go inside the visitors center first and see/read all the exhibits. When the talk is announced you have about 30 mins. They remind you again too. If you walk to your car and get your chairs there is shade to set them up. There is a bench but it’s in the sun. A lot of people sat on the hard concrete. It’s a very good talk about the brothers.

Afterwards you are close enough to walk to the replica shed/cabin and the flight markers. If it’s not too hot out you have 2 options to walk uphill to the memorial OR drive around and park at a few different spaces around the base perimeter. Beware you still have a bit of an uphill climb. While you are here do not miss the bronze cast of men present that day or the plane behind the monument.

If you are national park holders, you can use that to get in for free.

I very much enjoyed this.

Worth It

By PaulBeve |

Really enjoyed visiting. Very educational. Lots of walking, which is good, so wear proper shoes. The view from the memorial of the surrounding area is awesome.

Wright brothers

By Karen S |

Well worth the visit. There was so much to see and read that I really enjoyed visiting the memorial.

Worth the stop!

By Mama Travels |

We had so much fun here with! It really helps to be able to catch the ranger talks as they give so much information about the history and nuances that you don't always get in history textbooks. We climbed all the way to the top of the monument and my sons got into the Junior Ranger Program (totally worth it as it helps them pay attention to the facts and details!). Love that the ticket is good for 10 days so we actually went back a second time to get the National Parks passport and sticker. It was a good educational experience for the whole family.

Outstanding

By Joebob747 |

Oh wow! This was way cooler than I expected. Granted, I'm an aviation net, so that helps. The small museum has an original propeller, engine case, rollers, fabric, and some other stuff. The display giving the history was helpful as well. I got chills when I saw the sewing machine that Bill Tate's wife used to sew dresses out of the fabric from the gliders and flyer. The people that rate this low are right, there is truly not a lot here. You want to spend 2-3 days looking at stuff, go to Dayton. If you want to take the time to just embrace and ponder what happened here and how it changed our entire life, I felt this had a bigger impact on me. And it's cool to watch the vultures soar around and think about flying just like the Wrights did. Even with my love of airplanes, 2-3 hrs is plenty of time.

What a cool site

By Dewayne P |

Upon entry you stop by a gate to pay for parking. Then you start your experience at the visitors center where they have a museum and gift shop. Docent led tours happen throughout the day or you can peruse the grounds at your convenience. Lulu, the ranger who gave our tour, was amazing! Lots of things to see while at the park.

Inspiration point

By csserious2 |

I had a dream to visit the amazing place where Wright Brothers took off in their first flight from the windy Kitty Hawk grounds filled with sand. The museum has a replica of the plane they built, some genuine parts and some pictures with narratives. But I expected more, like movies that depict their lives and efforts, and experimental setups that children love to play. Hence it was more of a place for inspiration rather than enjoying amazing artifacts. However, you can drive to the hill from where the flights took off and the adjacent airstrip. All in all, the museum deserves five stars any day.

Recommend for adults and families with grade school children and above

By AnnieDodgeCity_KS |

My husband, our 25 year old daughter(& her boyfriend), and I visited here. The lady park ranger did a great job giving us information about the life of the Wright Brothers…we took the 11 AM tour(I think there is a tour every 2 hours in the summer). Most of us walked up to the Memorial hill where the brothers first flew a glider. We also looked through the small museum that had a replica of the first electric powered aircraft. The museum also told the story of the Wright Brothers and their family. I think you need about 2 hours to see everything.

Good exercise and great views!

By Mark T |

A must-see for NC history! Walking trails are paved with varied inclines for individual capability. A nice experience for the $10 fee.

Family visit to the Wright Brothers

By acowen69 |

This was a really awesome place to visit . Well laid out and less walking than I had anticipated. Very family or couple friendly .. a definite must do if you are in the outer banks. Very informative staff .. provided lots of details and information. If you have young kids there is a lot of reading.

Wright Brothers National Memorial: A Tribute two Remarkable Ohio Inventors

By ArtsyGalBaltimore |

Attended the Ranger talk offered three time daily. Despite humid and hot weather, well worth the half hour in the sun. Highlighted the Wrights’ perseverance in the face of daunting conditions of weather, environment, and the challenge of discovery. Well designed visitor center with effective modeling. This visit a good complement to one in Dayton, Ohio

Wright Visit

By Ron O. |

A must visit in OBX!

Learn about the history of the Wright brothers and their mark on history. Lots to learn and see.

Met my distant relatives

By Ben M |

Great place for you to take your family and walk around. Great opportunities for pictures. If you pay for admission, you will be able to go back for 7 days at no extra cost.

Can use national park pass

By txtravelor_7 |

Lots of walking. Read online as enough isn’t mentioned how the sister helped in their success. Thought admission per person was high but was thankful the collector asked if we had the national park pass. I was more impressed by local preservations of plantations.

Must visit!

By wolfepack2013 |

This was a nice stop. The kids were engaged. The weather was beautiful. I have not been here in decades, so it was nice to see such a sleek upgrade to the site. Wear comfortable shoes.

Unimpressed

By Shank P |

Was looking for a plane museum and a little bit more open history, instead it felt more like a quick drive thru, they had a small museum inside, we politely passed up. It didn't look to exciting or interesting, do we made a u turn and left. I didn't go in the little museum they had, so i can't give them to low of a score. Also if your looking for aircraft this is not the place.

Make this a stop on her vacation

By 9Roytan |

It was an amazing couple of hours at this site. We walked all over and went up to the monument. It is an inclined walk which gets steeper near the top. My husband and I were fine, but there were some people who really struggled. It was amazing to see how flight began and how the process worked. It was well worth the entrance fee.

Very Interesting Site

By wfq164831 |

We spent about 1.5 hours at the museum and memorial. We learned a lot about the wright brothers and what it took to actually make that first flight. If you are a history buff, you will love this place.

A must do!

By Stacey C |

Excellent Ranger talk. Being a former military and commercial pilot, he was so knowledgeable and passionate about the Wright brothers and their invention.

Great park to take a walk! Good path for a stroller. I recommend wearing sneakers. So awesome to finally see this!

By donnabN8343FT |

Great walk ways for walking and a stroller. Wear sneakers or shoes that you don’t mind d walking up and down incline in. So historical!

Definitely worth a visit!

By 100Diane100 |

This was a must-see! Set up very nice in visitor center--very informative. They also had a ranger give a talk and little tour with Wright Brothers info. Climbing to the Memorial was definitely steep, but an accomplishment, lol. You can park closer to it to save steps though. AND purchase a National Parks Pass--you can save some money on all National Park sites.

Bucket List Item for any History Buff

By Al Makynen |

It is not often you get to be at the exact place where history was made. You get to stand where the first airplane took off and then walk to where it landed seconds later 100+ feet away. (Not at the top of the dune. That is where the glider flights took off and where the stone memorial now stands!) It is worth the walk to the memorial to experience the winds. Go to the Visitor Center and museum first to get a quick orientation.

Great overview of Wright Brothers inspiring journey to flight!

By Cheryl M |

I went in not knowing much about how man learned to fly and within 1-2 hours learned interesting history of the Wright brothers life and success in OH and NC. The 30 minute lecture was well worth the time….providing interesting information not presented in the museum. Stop and learn why we are now able to zip around the world!

Cool to See One Time

By The_Wanderer1992 |

I've heard about the Wright Brothers and their first flights in Kitty Hawk many times throughout life and I was looking forward to visiting here while in North Carolina. This memorial is owned by the National Park service. It is $10 for an adult. The park features a museum along with a driving loop that has a few spots to stop at. The driving loop includes a very steep walk up to a memorial dedicated to the Wright Brothers, an art sculpture featuring the Wright Brothers and the ones who witnessed their first flight, replicas of the hangers and the first four landing spots of their flights. Each spot had parking spots or you could walk on a nice day. It was raining and nasty outside on the day I went and hardly anyone was viewing the outside spots, but I still am glad I was able to see this memorial.

Excellent visitor center

By warnermrs |

Excellent visitor center. Interactive exhibits and ample space to social distance while taking in the breeze. Perfect Junior ranger booklet and fun badge for our 3 yr old. Paved path to the monument is an easy walk, though it looks intimidating.

Interesting

By Lyncal |

Long climb to the top. Would be nice to see some seating on the way up. The view is fabulous and worth the climb.

Great celebration of American Technology

By Chuck F |

Beautiful to see, shame it costs so much to get in. Can’t say that it was worth the expense. Maybe if we had been in a tour it would have been different.

Informative Stop

By J E F |

The visitors center has great, informative exhibits, and the walking tour was wonderful. The walk up to the monument is definitely worth it.

Where It All Began

By E_Rodgers82 |

It was an amazing place and truly inspirational. The role of sister Katherine was thoroughly explained as were the other siblings. It was a hot day, but the walk was enjoyable from the visitor center to the monument. From the monumentmm, you have a great view of the Kill Devil's Hill airport.

Very cool

By Kate C |

Super interesting. I didn't know what to expect but this exceeded my expectations. Interesting indoor museum and cool things to do/see outside too. Highly recommend.

Wright Brothers and their dream brought to life

By Yvette B |

A must do for visitors of all ages while in the area! $10 entrance fee per vehicle and masks are required regardless of vaccination status. The visitors center is very well done and brings the Wright brothers and their family to life. Their endeavor to bring flight from fantasy to reality is very well documented as is the progress since. Tours are self guided but park rangers are ready for questions and know their stuff! Like Why do we always hear of Kitty Hawk as being the birthplace of aviation when this is in Kill Devil Hills? I also noticed kids with booklets...I think it was some sort of scavenger hunt but what ever it was they looked like they were really into learning. Go Out side and see where the actual flight took place then if you don't feel up for the walk up the hill to the monument there is a closer lot on the back side. You can walk all the way around the hill to see a life size sculpture of the first flight but this can be done in a car as well.

Time to fly

By Tracie S |

This was up the street from where we stayed. Overall, it gave a thorough view of the first flights from prior to and after the flights. Informative and historical.
To see the monument, we drove to the base of the hill. The climb was difficult to the monument (steep, but smooth). For someone in a wheelchair or with a difficult time walking, seeing this from a far is the next best thing.
But the views are top notch!

First in flight!

By Linda B |

Lots of information about the Wright brothers trials and tribulations leading up to their flights. Definitely take the hike up Kill’s Devil Hill (paved walkway) and think of the brothers carrying their prototype up it…..when it was a sand dune!

Doesn't take long, historic facts and displays, take the bug spray

By Darla S |

Museum is worth the walk thru if you're a flight enthusiast. Outdoor areas are markers and signs with flight details. Out buildings not too interesting. The dune hill is worth the drive up to see the life size bronze plane and statues of that historic lift off. You can drive up to it and donot have to hike the hill to the monument. Although that is a good perspective view. All total indoor museum and outdoor space took us an hour. For those with national parks pass, its an easy choice. Might be expensive for a large family paying by individuals. Nothing interactive for kids and they'll be tempted to climb on displays or markers most likely. Plenty outdoor space though. Bring the bug spray if you walk outdoor paths.

Do not miss this exceptional piece of history where flying became a reality

By A Midlife Adventure |

I have to rate this as a five because I planned it purely for my husband who really wanted to see it while we were in the USA and contrary to my expectations I also found it really informative with plenty of information balanced with models, artefacts etc.

It highlights this superb piece of history and engineering whilst also keeping the narrative true to life. I also felt the background message of dreaming something into reality was inspiring.
As usual in America the children are also entertained with interactive displays etc.

This is where flying first began to become real.

Very interesting!

By Aj Kirven |

Very cool piece of history! Definitely worth going to visit learned even more about the brothers and their historic achievements!

Once and Done

By BILLB47 |

This was first visit to the Outer Banks. This is a must see if you are in the area. Presentation was given by a Park Ranger. Very informative. Long walk and uphill to the actual memorial. Not handicap or elderly friendly.

A must see historical site

By Danielle D |

Amazing historical site. A must see while staying in the OBX. Well preserved and well laid out national treasure. Our Ranger guide was amazing. We visit the site every time we go to the OBX

Underwhelmed and don’t go in the heat of the day

By Lamby |

We were underwhelmed with the experience. The gift shop was very expensive. My husband was hoping for a small plane replica to purchase, which surprisingly they did not sell. The visitor center was not overly crowded but there really wasn’t much to see. It was vey hot the day we went and the walk from the visitor center to monument was brutal. We are young and athletic people but it was all in the direct sun and up hill. No shade or any assistance at the monument for anyone that might need it. There is a water fountain and water bottle refill
Station in the visitor center.
I would caution against the trek with children, elderly, or injured, especially in the heat of the day. There is parking closer to the monument if you drive further into the park after checking out the visitor center, which circles around the back to the outside plane replica that you can climb on.
Overall, glad we saw it but definitely once was enough.

Wow!! Just an awesome experience

By Lisa S |

Really enjoyed visiting this memorial. Lots of history here. It was really cool to walk the flight path. If you are in the area, it's a must see.

Interesting museum about flight

By Jill M |

This was a very interesting museum. Learned a lot about how aviation began. Good for kids & adults alike. Inside musrum had great displays of info, easy to read. Also had a replica of plane they built. Lots yo walk around outside to see.

I love this place.

By TheUnknownFranklin |

I absolutely loved this place.
Every part of it.
I spent around two hours here.
I loved the inside museum/welcome center.
The monument on the hill is so cool too.
I also loved that the admission covers seven days so you can come back multiple days. This is great if you come on a busy day full of students.

Glad we went; learned a lot

By htwh |

Hot and humid climb to the monument; the plane replica and statues were neat; inside there was a whole lot of history if you cared to read it all. This is the only replica of the plane since the real one isn't on display at the Air and Space Museum during its renovation.

Very interesting attraction!

By Lindsayyy412 |

A very interesting attraction to see, learned so much here that I had not previously known about the history of flying. Wonderful what the Wright Brothers did, my family and I enjoyed both the memorial as well as the museum. Definitely something to check out while in town,

View is fantastic!

By Tiffanyjim |

So we didn’t take a tour like we wanted to, was not enough time to do everything we wanted to do, so we went in the evening and walked up to the monument. It was a breathtaking view. Many people were walking up to the top and biking around the area. Next time we are in the area we are going to experience the full educational experience. What we did see was fantastic!

Wright Brothers NM

By Lisa J |

Beautiful monument! It is inside the State Park and if you are lucky like we were you will get to see a plane take off or land at the airport right behind the park. Its a very large monument that sits up on a hill, you can walk up ans see it up close if you would like. There is plenty of parking all the way around it.

Fantastic stop for all

By GiddyUpNGoTravel |

Another great National Park stop. Fun for all ages. There is a Park Ranger guided or self-guided tour options. People may walk or drive to the base Kill Deer Hill and walk up to see a birds eye view of the accomplishment the Wright Brothers made. Hard to believe in 1903 the area was sand and today it is grass. Make sure to visit the airplane and bronze figure exhibit behind the Kill Deer Hill memorial.

Great History Here

By Kurt K |

Parking was extensive. The replica plane and structures provided an added level of context. The historical notes were well described in the exhibit building. Restrooms are available. Access is easy.

Fly away

By 123Trina |

Very well designed and informative museum. The outside area was also well Designed with pathway to show you the spots that the Wright Brothers landed in. The huge memorial on top of the sand dune is beautiful even if you don’t walk to the top

Very nice visit

By Noé |

We finally visit this beautiful memorial and it helps us understand their stories better. There is also a very nice view from the top of the hill near the memorial but may be less fun for the little ones.

State park excellence

By Rhonda D |

State park excellence!. Was there for flag raising. Staff was informative and friendly. Cost 10 per adult. Plenty of parking. Exhibits were interesting in the museum. Some hands on and interactive. The grounds are well maintained. The monument has a walkable pathway up to the base or you can just drive around the mound.

A must see excursion.

By kep6962Ohio |

This was a great excursion on a chilly day. They have a replica of the plane inside the visitor center as well as many other fun facts. We had a presentation to listed to from a guide that was very informative.

In awe of the wonderful parents of the Wright brothers

By Myra |

Such a nicely laid out indoor exhibit with interesting, personalinsightful displays - the talk was great and we could see a replica of the plane. I loved it. I have so much respect for the Wright brothers parents. They were the best parents these kids could have had and if it wasn’t for their combined support and innate talents, that plane never would have taken off. The brothers were close and worked well together and encountered MANY obstacles and even crashed but they never gave up!
Love the family and the family history.
We did not tour the outdoor things, it was too darned cold and WINDY.
The reason the Wright Bros chose the Outer banks was for the wind there. After they got famous, the curiosity factor of the public got to be too much snd they moved

Must visit for the area. Learned lots, well maintained place.

By Robert Matsuoka |

Super cool place. Great visitor center, talks by park ranges. The monument hill looks great (but we didn't climb it because HOT!), the stone markers and hut recreation awesome, and the climbable flyer on the far side of the hill was lots of fun. Must visit!

Fabulous Documentation of The Wright Brothers Journey

By Anne O |

This is a must see to gain insight into early aviation. The museum has a trove of material on the brothers' early life, feats of design and engineering and ultimately their defiance of gravity. A replica of their plane is also on display. You can walk along the runway outside. Drive or walk to a bronze memorial depicting what that first takeoff might have looked like. It's very well done and brings their amazing accomplishment to life.

Better than expected

By Art and Ginny |

There are several cool aspects to this site. The actual marked location of the first 4 flights. The indoor displays including a full size model of the Wright Flyer along with some of the pieces of the original. A large monument on the hill surrounded by a loop road that has an excellent display of the participants of the first flight. Also a ranger's tour and discussion of the Wrights' efforts to fly. We loved it.

History (and Hiking)

By MomOf4GreatOnes |

Awesome piece of American (and world) history. Walking the field and seeing just how far those first flights were, it really is amazing how far we've come in 120 years. No cash is accepted - be prepared to pay the $10/person admission with a card. We didn't know there was a ranger tour and just did a self-tour walkthrough of the museum building and flying field. We found the basic info presented clearly on the signage and didn't miss having a tour guide, although I'm sure the rangers give a lot more detail. We hiked up to the monument - it was a hot day, and the path is steeper on the top half of the hill. (My husband has knee problems and had to take it slow, but he made it.) But the views from the top were worth the effort for us. Don't miss the bronze statues at the bottom of the monument hill, in the park on the back side. Great creative photo ops! We visited with 3 of our adult children, and they were interested in all the displays and sights. Our whole visit was just under 2 hours - more time would probably be needed for the ranger tour.

Beautiful Walk

By goldenparadox |

Didn't go to the museum on this trip, but walked the grounds and walked up to the monument. The grounds are beautiful and definitely worth walking and exploring. The view from the top of the monument is breathtaking and the statues at the bottom and equally worthwhile and work of art.

Engaging and educational

By Sue H |

At this site we could imagine how exhilarated the Wright brothers were when they first took to the air! The educational components were engaging and the actual memorial was worth the climb up the hill. A replica of the plane is housed in a spacious, light-filled area. We’ll be thinking about the brothers’ accomplishments on our flight back to Minnesota!

Walk the path of the first successful four flights

By ELinsky2015 |

A beautiful monument to the first flights of Wilbur and Orville Wright, this monument has a life-size replica of their patented aeroplane inside a small museum and gift shop. Interactive displays contain models showing how their design evolved from what was essentially a box kite to a flying machine. Markers allow you to walk the dunes where they landed on four test flights. A replica camp shows how they lived while building their plane. The monument hill is a pretty hike and a nice monument.

Good museum

By angeleyes27 |

We got the park pass as it is the same price as 2 tickets which were $10 per person. The museum isn’t real big but has some good information as well as interactive exhibits. I liked the life size replica of the flying machine. There is an outside area with a big monument and stones showing their attempts. My husband enjoyed the ranger talk. If you go early, it is less crowded

Fun

By Vincent |

:) Great experience. I will be back next time I’m in Kill Devil Hills. I’ll be sure to come when it’s not so hot next time. :) :) :)

Outstanding experience!

By Dan556 |

This was the first attraction my wife and I planned to visit during our stay on the Outer Banks, and our timing was perfect; we arrived minutes before the park ranger tour. Ranger Adair was born to conduct this tour. She was energetic and enthusiastic, and very well-prepared, including visuals. [We were told later that each ranger must do their own research and create their own tour presentation.]

We began on the back patio with the back story, then progressed to an outbuilding workshop for more details before moving on to a small stone monument where the tour concluded.

On our own, we walked out to each of the progressive flight distance markers, then reversed direction and walked up the hill to the memorial, where the views are wonderful.

We then toured the informative displays in the visitor center before driving around to the area behind the monument to see the bronze sculptures of the plane and people present on that December day.

We spent a total of 2 hours in the site, and enjoyed every minute. Don't miss this!

First in flight!

By DrCarraway |

Very educational and informative. There are quite a few opportunities to walk, a small (but good) museum, a small gift shop, and a full scale model of the Wright Flyer. Very clean and well done.

Must stop!

By not@work |

Very interesting museum and beautiful area. Explains in a way that you can somewhat unserstand the passion and tenacity of the Wright Brothers.

Informative

By Dean_Amy-2004 |

A well done site with lots of interesting information and models. While the original glider is in DC, you can see a piece of the original wing cloth in the visitor center. Areas to explore outside with the flight markers and replica “house” and hanger. Worth a trip up to the monument and drive around the loop.

Very interesting

By Steve D |

I wish there was more to see, but all in all very interesting. Dogs are allowed on the grounds but not the buildings. A pice of history.

History comes alive in this unassuming Outerbanks spot.

By BonnieS980 |

A fitting tribute to the brothers responsible for first flight! Loved the museum, the guided outdoor tour and the memorial up on the hill. I really wanted to stand where this event took place, and I felt that the museum and memorial was very fitting. It exceeded my expectations.

Informative and Inspiring

By Dakota L |

This was stop #3 of 3 of the National Parks of OBX for my wife and I and it was a fantastic experience. The museum had wonderful displays and a replica of the original plane used by the brothers. We walked from the visitor center to the 4 stones where each attempt landed and then did the small uphill walk to the monument which is enormous with a great view. Will definitely be stopping back here on our next vacation. There is a $10 per person charge which only funds the national parks so it’s well worth it.

absolutely worth seeing

By micr |

History was made here! In 1903, the brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright made mankind's first flights. The first flight lasted 12 seconds and traveled 37 meters. This and more is explained at the National Memorial. It is a must-see if you are on the Outer Banks. Admission per person is USD 10.00. Admission is free with the Annual Pass.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

By Vicki P |

Really well done. Very informative with information from their childhood to their eventually getting to Kill Devil Hills. Really nice display and excellent commentary from the Rangers.

Superb.

By SteveK28762 |

What a great place!
This is a superb memorial to one of the great milestones in history. The memorial is laid out superbly, with the details of the flights laid out across the airfield, marked by stones showing the landings of the first flights made by the Wright Brothers in 1903. The memorial itself looks over the airfield and also the statues of the moment when flight was achieved.
Very impressive indeed. Absolute must-see if you're in the area.

Worth seeing when visiting OBX area!

By Michelle C |

What a nice little memorial. It is a nice climb to the top of the hill to see the monument -view is lovely! The museum is full of information and history of the Brothers. My favorite is the wall of their family-many know the story of their flight vision but it is nice to see read about their parents and siblings.

It is a good balance of things to see outside and inside.

Great activity for an hour or two

By dustnic |

This was a great place to stop while waiting for our rental property to be available after a long ride. We thoroughly enjoyed the Park Ranger’s enthusiasm during the Wind and Sand program. It’s a 30 minute live summary of the Wright Brothers. For someone who just wants a summary this is perfect. The visitors center is full of more detailed information boards for more details and a replica of the plane. We drove to one of the parking lots on the hill to go to the monument. It is still a climb to get to the top but if mobility allows the climb it is a spectacular view. It was up here looking down over the field where I felt a surge of pride for what they accomplished. We have a lifetime pass so the admission fee wasn’t an issue for us. When you turn 62 make sure you get a pass so you can easily visit all of the sites in the National Park System, it is well worth the $80!

A Very Special Memorial

By Ron N |

This Park is a memorial and a museum for the Wright Brothers. It is on the sight at Kittyhawk, North Carolina where they took their first four flights and where they spent several years developing and practicing their skills.
Since the dawn of humanity, human flight has been a universal dream and aspiration. It was a dream that many people failed to achieve and many believed was not possible.
This memorial tells their story and shows you the hill where they practiced with gliders which helped them problem solve. It also has reproductions of their hangers and living quarters. In addition there are large stone markers that indicate where their first four flights started and where each landed.
There also is a replica of their plane.
This is a great story of history and I believe that these two men changed our 20th century. I connect this event with the other quintessential achievement of that century, Neil Armstrong stepping on to the moon.
My hope is that a century that was torn apart by two world wars, will be remembered not for death and destruction, but rather for the spirit of adventure and invention of those two monumental events.

Interesting History

By Andy3838 |

It was interesting to see this place of historical significance. The museum had some good information and I liked seeing the replica plane. I'm glad I was able to visit but I expected there to be more. We were able to go through the museum, see the flight markers and visit the hill with the monument in a couple hours and that was with us taking our time.

A very beautifully done educational site worth the trip

By Wanderlassie |

Kill Devil Hills was our northernmost stop from Florida in order to see this monument. It was worth the trip. Everything is bright and well laid out. There was a docent in the barn describing the two brothers that was educational. It was amazing that this was built at a place that the Wright brothers loved. I would definitely recommend this site, even if the town around it is over-built with tourist schmuck.

A must see!

By Hannah D |

This is a must see while you’re in OBX! There is a little bit for everyone. The stones marking where the flights landed were very cool to see. To be on the actual spot where it all started was amazing! Lots of walking outdoors, but amazing exhibits. Would recommend!

This is a very well done National Memorial

By SunnysideDon |

My wife and i recently visited this memorial. I thought it was very interesting and the monument to the Wright Brothers itself is quite impressive. There are recreations of the hanger and the shed the Wrights lived in while conducting their flights. There is a marker at the point where the flights took off from and markers of where the first four flights landed, It was interesting to see how much progress was made in the distance of those first four flights. There is also a reproduction of the 1903 Wright flyer in the visitor center.
You can drive or walk to the hill on which the monument itself sits. It's a bit of a climb to get up to it but well worth the effort. If you continue around the hill there is a life size metal reproduction of the first flight complete with sculptures of Orvill piloting the plane, Wilbur running alongside and the witnesses to that first flight. It is OK to climb up on the plane and snap pictures which is pretty cool as well.

My one word of advice is to come early. There is no shade and it gets pretty hot in the afternoon. It also was quite crowded when we got there as well so you might avoid the crowds by getting there early.

Everything You Need To Know About the Wright Brothers and The First Flights

By DJ-Doctor-D |

It was great to just be in the place where it all began! We walked the entire property and looked at everything available. Lots of great facts and displays to help one understand the processes the Wright Brothers created. Really enjoyed it!

Excellent presentation

By 806Leanleft |

Throughly enjoyed, it wasn’t too detailed or large that one got bored. Hit all the highlights. Highly recommend.

Wright brothers memorial

By Nora S |

Place has so much history. Beautiful park with nice wide walkways. People weret walking, riding their bikes. Could be difficult if you have issues going up hills. It's a slow incline but could be difficult for some. You can drive to the base but still have a hill to the top. Breathtaking views from the top

Worth the walk up the hill

By Marc N |

Visitor Center very information. Memorial is atop a tall hill so be prepared for a walk. Make sure you take your camera for a photo op.

There is a lot more to see around the vast grounds.

By Jean H |

We visited on a beautiful fall Monday morning in November. Crowds were low, which was nice. We looked at the NPS exhibits and I got my NPS Passport stamped. The ranger didn't know where the restrooms were, she pointed outside and around behind where she was sitting when in fact the were out the door and immediately on the left. I asked another woman and she told me where they were.
The grounds are laid out well with the area where the test flights took place clearly marked, and high on a hill, is the Memorial - you can't miss it? But you might miss the added bronze airplane sculpture on the other side of the Memorial from the exhibits and the flight paths. It was installed in 2003, the 100th anniversary of the first flight.

Amazing Educational Historical Experience!!

By MuskokaBarb |

Very educational! An excellent museum with a visual story about how the Wright Brothers developed 'flight'.
A replica of the flyer is displayed in the museum. [Their original flyer is in the Air & Space Museum in Washington DC.]
On the grounds, there are distance markers and the very first runway.
The monument is a true tribute to these men.

Not much to see but a nice place to walk around

By RBonTheLake |

If you’re interested in aviation, or history, this would be interesting for you. The monument is nothing special but it was a nice walk to get to it. Some people may feel the walk is too much since it is on top of a hill. The museum has a replica of their plane, and some interesting facts. Since we had a national parks pass, it didn’t cost us anything. We spent less than an hour here.

Great summary of the Wright Brothers' experience

By Erin S |

We thoroughly enjoyed this place - visitor's center and outdoor exhibits. I liked how they used the Wright Brothers' story to apply to problems in general and how to overcome them. My favorite part was the outdoor diorama of the moment the first flight took off, with statues of who was there and where they were. We learned a lot.

A good tribute to the Wright Brothers

By Leon67203 |

The layout of the memorial is well done. The highlight for me was the layout of the first three flights. The walk up Big Kill Devil Hill gives you time to reflect on how committed these two were to perfect glider flight. The only thing is the visitor center's layout is too cramped and makes it haed to view the exhibits.

Great National Park

By Don J |

The history of the Wright family is extremely interesting and I wasn't familiar with it prior to visiting. It was especially interesting to see the engineering book and how they designed their experiments. The gift shop was great and the view from the monument on top of the hill is beautiful as well as the view from up there.

Educational and fun

By Jcox7483 |

We really enjoyed visiting the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Our kids loved it and were actually really interested in learning about the history here, which says a lot. The grounds are well kept, the exhibits are engaging, and the park rangers do an excellent job bringing the story to life. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in the area.

Where Flying Began

By Barbara Dee |

The visitors center has a small museum dedicated to the Wright Brothers, but outside is where the real history is! There are replica sheds where the Wright Brothers lived and stored their planes. On a long flat area are four markers indicating the four test flights, how far they flew, and how long they were in the air. Throughout the grounds are historical markers with information. There is no rush and you can leisurely stroll and take in the history of flight. There is a hill that has a paved path and at the top is the memorial to the Wright Brothers, plus it offers a view of the surrounding area. A great place to experience.

Go to the 30 min tour/speach

By Iowa_girl |

The memorial is crowded and facemasks inside the museum are required. The 30 minute informative speech they give a few times a day is worth hearing. When I went, they had chairs setup underneath a white tent. The park employees give the history of how the Wright brothers experimented and self taught themselves how to fly. I would really recommend the tour/speech. No masks required when outside.

Not An All-Day Affair

By Chrissiebear101 |

Wow! How cool it was to stand in the place where flight was invented! The museum is small but informative. We did not do the guided tour; it appeared there was a very long line for this on a Wednesday afternoon. Aside from the museum you can see the markers for the first four flights the brothers did, and can hike to the monument on the hill (which also offers a nice view!) There are some awesome bronze statues and you can sit near the airstrip too. You don't need a lot of time for this place but it is worth the visit for the historical significance!

Interesting

By Jennifer B |

There are a lot of interesting things to see, including a replica of their airplane. The museum is air conditioned for the most part. There is an area out back showing different parts of their take off, etc and a replica of their hanger and cabin and it’s all outside. The biggest thing is the monument. Be prepared if you decide to go see it because it’s a steep walk, and difficult if you are handicapped in any way. Especially in the heat!

Great Visit! Be sure to attend the Rangers Presentation

By momtodbl |

This was such a wonderful experience. I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was a small museum area that had displays and pictures, but the best part of this whole visit was listening to the Ranger tell the stories of the Wright brothers. He explained all the obstacles that they had to work through and how they almost quit. It had a little bit about the history of their family. It was so enjoyable and easy to follow. I recommend this it was a hot day and if you want to go and see the memorial, which is at the top of a hill, send your husband to take a picture. It was a little too much for me. I agreed to take a walk to the markers and take a photo of each of the markers indicating the distance that they flew on their four attempts on December 17, 1903. I cheated a little and took pictures of the first three walked halfway to the last one and I asked somebody else to share their picture with me. They did! This is a hot day in August. Take your children!!

A National Treasure

By kpslas |

Hard to believe we've only been flying in airplanes a little over 100 years. Learn how the Wright brothers defied conventional thinking and figured out how to build a flying machine by studying birds and building their own wind tunnel.

Enjoyable visit

By delawarevisitor2018 |

The ranger talk was very interesting and even though I have no interest in aeronautics, I thoroughly enjoyed our visit. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the Wright Brothers' quest to build a flying machine and why they decided on doing their test flights here. If you go, you must plan on attending the ranger talk because that is why this review has five stars.

Nice to visit.

By HarvestRecreations |

Lots of walking once you leave the museum. I enjoyed the pictures in the museum and the accounts of the first flight. The hill is a long way to walk but you can drive around. There is also a lot of walking if you want to visit the markers for the landing sights. There is a cost to enter the parking lot for the museum.

Great Views and Awesome Museum

By Tantalika |

We visited November 2023. We were traveling with the furbaby and all our activities had to be dog friendly. We all throughly enjoyed the Wright Brothers Memorial. The furbaby was welcome in all outdoor areas. We took turns visiting the excellent museum. My husband who initially wasn’t too excited about this selection found it particularly fascinating. It was probably his favorite excursion of the trip. Great views from the top of memorial hill. Note-there are signs warning about staying on the paths due to sharp vegetation. The signs aren’t lying. The one time the fur child stepped off the sidewalk he collected some sort of burr that had to be removed from his paw.

An Impactful Experience

By TravelHer |

The Wright Brothers Memorial and Museum is a fantastic place to visit. I'd seen the Wright Brothers Flyer hanging in the Smithsonian, but the full-size replica was tremendously impactful with the boulders marking the starting point and each of the 4 flights visible through the windows. Hike to the top of the famous grass-stabilized sand dune to view the Memorial, explore the Museum and the replica workshop buildings, walk the flight paths, and visit the small gift shop for a memento. You won't regret visiting this National Park!

So Wrong It's Wright

By NYTravelerBD |

The museum is informative and interesting, and the show stopped is a full-scale replica of the Wright Brothers' original airplane. My 11 year old daughter was pretty bored to be honest, but my wife and I loved running up that hill to admire the beautiful hilltop monument with sweeping views of the OBX.

Amazing story and amazing view from the monument

By lmk1126 |

Make your trip for a time when the park ranger is giving the tour because the details of this momentous event are fascinating.

Not to Be Missed!

By Kathleen |

What a great National Memorial to powered flight. The museum tells the story in a way that is easily accessible to everyone and is quite interesting. We loved the replica plane and getting to see original parts of it too. The staff is helpful and the museum shop is filled with great gifts. The hike and drive to the memorial is super cool. Just a great piece of history here focused on ideas, imagination and the ability to observe and keep trying.

Must see

By Jean R |

Such a great museum. Very well done
A wonderful experience to explore the stories of our history of flight. There is hands on exploration. Visual entertainment and science of engineering from that era. The tools used and fabrication of building the kitty Hawk

History at its place, at its best

By Donna R |

Wright Bros Memorial has been on our "bucket list" of places to visit for a number of years. Before going here this summer, we also visited Wright Bros places in Dayton, OH, so that we were well versed in what happened out here in 1903. The place had great informational signage, or you could go to a (very popular) ranger talk, or both. We want to return sometime on a shoulder season, so that we can enjoy the place without so many people!

Definitely a must-stop if you've never been!!

By Laura R |

We loved the interactive exhibits and the opportunity to walk the first-ever flight path! The museum is super informative and the view from the Wright Brothers Memorial at the top of the hill is gorgeous.

Room to move around.

Good historical info.

Lots of cool info on Wright Bros. here. Indoor museum has lots of items to view. Outside paths and areas are very nice and well kept. Worth a trip. Don't miss the very back of area with large life size objects of first flight!

The park ranger that explained the history of the Wright Bros was very, very good!

I think that his name was Adonius-He was top notch!

Excellent Visit to a Historical Monument

By marts03 |

There are 3 parts to the experience. A Visitor's Center building is closest to the entrance (which I skipped). Then there's the monument on the hill, which is impressive by itself and also gives great 360 degree views of the area and out to the ocean. While the paths are flat and it's wheelchair accessible, it is a bit of a walk up-the hill, although worth it. Then back down on the ground are statues of the actual moment of flight. It's a short, flat walk around those. Overall, well-worth visiting, especially if you are an aviation enthusiast.

Beautiful place

By Ruben |

Enjoyed time at beautiful Wright Brothers National Memorial. The ocean view from the hill is so beautiful

Great trip for families - informative

By NCtraveler2929 |

Great visit. Open in Thanksgiving. Visitors Center very informative and interactive. Friendly staff. Outside of the center are replicas of the camp the Wright Bros stayed in for their flight attempts. Granite markers show each of the 4 attempts in 1903. You can also walk from the Center to the 60’ granite monument up steep paths; or you can drive on the one way loop road and get out and walk up (steep) paths. Great views from the top though to see the ocean and surrounding area. Restrooms not in Center building but in the side. Cost is $10/pp but if you’re a Veteran show your ID or drivers license with designation and free for you and 3 others.

Inspiring and memorable!

By Lee M |

We toured this on our first trip to the Outer Banks, and this was the best attraction we did. We spent 2 - 3 hours there. The indoor historical display with plaques containing photos and write-ups was fascinating. The tour guide was very skilled, enthusiastic and entertaining to listen to as she told the inspiring story of the Wright Brothers. The hike up to the monument was not that long, but was steep. We are in relatively good shape for seniors and it was easy for us. We saw some people with canes that made it up there. Definitely worth the money and a memorable excursion!

Highly recommend

By Nita M |

Great information about the Wright Brothers and their first flight! The monument is beautiful and the other areas of interest are great. There are even park rangers who give talks about the history of the flight. Great exercise if you want to walk to the monument and the marker for the longest flight at that time. But you can drive closer to the monument. Highly recommend.

History and Kite Flying

By GSW |

Great historic monument and museum. A multitude of great kites flying from the lawn: a whale shark, crab, flying horse, alligator and more!

Got see this place!!!

By Kevin G |

You have to go! This is where history took place and you can walk in the same place the Wright Brothers did. It's amazing to be here.

They have ample parking and a great place to explore how it all came together The walk to the monument is long and uphill so plan ahead.

Highly recommend this experience

By onehappylittlelady |

This was really done well - exhibit was small but interesting and really personalized the Wright Brothers for the average visitor. You felt you got to know their family and who they were, and this made the experience so much more accessible and less "museum-like." I had goosebumps standing beside the markers where the flights took off and landed, and watching small planes take off and land at the air strip really made you reflect in real time the impact the Wright Brothers had on our world.

NC memorial

This is a nice spot to visit if you're visiting the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Great for families and a place for a short hike.

Wright Brothers Memorial

By Knapp C |

We visited this memorial on a recent trip to Kitty Hawk. I found the museum to be very interesting. Looking at the beginning of flight to now in 2023 is truly amazing as to how far we have progressed. The flight line markers were nice to see and take pictures of. The reconstructions of the hanger and living quarters was nice. The monument at the top of the dune is a long walk up and there is no benches to sit on for those who wait for others to go up and come down. 10 dollars for 16 and up in age. National park sticker may get you in free.

Wright Brothers Museum visit

By Carol F |

The museum was highly educational and uplifting--beautifully laid out in a relatively small space. It was appealing for visitors of all ages.

Worth a Visit but Potential for More

By HighExpectations |

This is a site worth seeing providing great insight into an important historical event. The visitor center building itself is unique, too. However, it has changed some. The replica of the Wright flyer is still on display but they no longer do Ranger talks there. Everything that the Rangers used to talk about is now on signs that visitors have to read. There also used to be two larger out buildings with additional displays. It is worth the walk up the hill to the monument to see that up close. It seems that much more could be done here--especially to make it worth the admission price of $10 per person--but I am glad it is there and it is worth the visit.

A surprise we didn’t know we needed

By FoodBucketList |

We stopped here on Spring Break with no expectations. The property is beautiful. We walked several miles around the property to view all the landmarks. Entry was free the day we went, but there is a donation box inside the museum. The weather was beautiful so there were other families walking and enjoying the outdoors.

🏃🏼‍♀️wear tennis shoes

Rangers were great

By Scott M |

Staff was very friendly and well versed when questions got asked. The ranger taking admission was even from our home state.

Well worth the visit

By Pat Galvin |

We stopped at the Wright Brothers National Memorial on a sunny breezy day in April. We had a wonderful presentation by one of the Park staff. There were many interesting exhibits and information in the center. Once outside the monument’s kind of help you visualize how they pulled it off. We drove around the monument up on the dune to see the sculptures on the other side and it was impressive as well.

Imressive

By TnBB |

Very surprised at the extent and layout of this memorial. Plan to walk a bit to get to the top of the hill, which is accessible. Tip - if you can't or don't want to walk all the way there is parking at the base of the hill.

11 yr old loved it

By Jill H |

Very interesting, cool sculpture of first flight and the monument was awesome. Quite a walk up to see it but totally worth it.

Very nice experience and good for all ages

By sherrycat |

We really enjoyed all parts of the grounds, memorial and museum. The ranger in the museum (Chad)? was so nice and gave us so much information. The entire experience is amazing to see what these 2 brothers did to change the world. Make sure you walk the grounds to see the first flight distances and up to the memorial. If you have kids, they can play on a replica of the plane with Wlibur. We spent about 1 1/2 hrs. Very nice.

A great stop!

By Sara |

Really interesting tour and the monument is a lovely tribute to the Wright Brothers. Indoor museum and outdoor exists and monument.

Informative…and fun!

By NateTheGreat |

Very fun and very informative. It is very good for people who are on vacation and trying to learn a thing or two. There were many indoor exhibits, and also a lot of exhibits outside. Would suggest going there

Wright Brothers Memorial is Awe Inspiring

Excellent place to visit for all ages. I visited in August 2021 and had not been there since I was a child. I enjoyed it again very much. The National Park Service does a great job running the memorial. It is very educational. Don't miss it when you are at the Outer Banks.

First flight experience

This museum was very budget friendly A nice outing for our family of 12 we only paid $10 for everyone. Kids were free which is very nice. Also military discount for my father is a veteran. It is inside and outside but still very nice with the wind blowing Kids learned a lot

Brilliant Bicycle Mechanics & Inspiring Quotes

By Elsa C. L. |

The National Parks Service charges a fee of $10 per person which is worth all the knowledge gained from its museum.

Everything is impressive! The Wright Brothers’ story, their journey, their perseverance that led to the comforts of air travel from which we all benefit from, the beautiful grounds, the exercise walking from the museum to the monument and back and the markers of where the four flights landed.

Let your dream take Flight!

By Rapidfiremonkey |

Great visitor center with a nice gift shop. Also an uphill walking path to the monument. Wear comfy shoes for the monument path. Give yourself an hour and a half if you’re rushing and 3 hours if you’re taking your time. There is an area to watch small planes taking off of and an interactive photo area at the base of the monument. My little ones enjoyed walking the “flight path” of the 4 actual short first flights.

An amazing piece of History

By Colin Archibald |

Located in Kil Devil Hills, this is the location where the Wright brothers did their experimenting with gliders and the original flying machine. There are markers showing the distance they took on the original flights. The monument sits atop a hill and quite a climb, but with great views. The visitors center is a must as it gives you a great background on what exhists there ontthe site.

Very fun.

By Harrison |

Very nice place for a couple hours. When we got there we heard over the intercom,” please come outside for a tour guide.” We did and he was great! I recommend coming here for some history.

Cool history

Great history and so glad we visited. It was very clod and windy the day we went so the walk around was a bit overwhelming in the wind.

Good two hours

By D5187PYcaitlinb |

The memorial is a nice change of pace for a beach vacation - historic and uniquely Outer Banks. My kids (7 and 4) surprisingly loved it! They did the entire property and are still talking about it as one of the highlights of their vacation. It's a lot of walking though if you walk from the museum to the memorial so plan accordingly.

Must see on your Outer Banks trip

By Debbie P |

This was on the list to do on our outer banks trip - so glad we did. Rangers made the historical come alive...must see for aviation enthusiasts. Make sure to take the walk to the monument - views are amazing.

Awesome place

By Kevin C |

Absolutely gorgeous, if you are into Aviation at all or just a history buff this is a must visit. The museum is full of cool tid bits but the monument is best part, the view is amazing!

Great history!

By ColoradoRunner01 |

Very informative. Sadly had a broken foot so the outdoor walking was a little difficult. Those with disabilities may have limitations. But over all, had a knee scooter and was still able to make it to the top of the monument.

A must see!

By cprendi10 |

This is a great take in. I learned so much about the Wright family and how the brothers progressed in following their dream of flight. The museum was very interesting. We went to one of the two lectures about the gliders and flights and it was very worth it. We walked the hill, (suggest going up the left and down the right as there seems to be a bit more breeze on that side!) We also walked the lift off point and the landing markers. It's amazing that thinking of how long in human history it took to do this "first flight" that about a hundred years later we're sending people to the moon and flights to Mars etc. The bronze sculpture on the far side of the hill is worth it, take the car around if you don't want to walk too much. Definitely a must see!

Great monument

By Navigator00561803864 |

An amazing place to visit, easy walk around the museum and up the hill; beautiful view from the top. Painless way to inject some education for kids and adults during a beach trip. They had ranger presentations while we were there which we didn't attend but looked interesting.

Great spot to visit!

By JCS |

This is a great little museum. It is very well done. The replica of the Wright Flyer is right at eye level with lots of plaques describing how it worked etc, and they do demonstrations of wing warping etc every once in a while. There are a lot of windows so it is very well lit and just a pleasant place to be. Then you go outside and you can see the starting and end points of their first 4 flights, and walk up to the top of the dune where they did some testing. The views from the dune are nice. If it is a brutally hot day, you can skip the walk to the top of the dune, as it is not really an essential part of the story.

Amazing experience!

By Lion Holdings |

Standing at the very spot where Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved powered flight is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience. The museum offers a deep dive into the history of flight, with fascinating exhibits and artifacts. Plus, the replica of the Wright brothers' plane gives you a real sense of the innovation and bravery that led to this groundbreaking achievement. However, one thing to keep in mind is that the memorial grounds themselves can be relatively compact, and you might explore everything relatively quickly. If you're looking for a full-day adventure, you might find that you've seen it all sooner than expected. Nonetheless, the historical significance of this place is something you won't forget.

History alive

By Nomad |

One will leave this place thinking about the inherent danger and the risk the Wright brothers took. As well as their tenacity and grit. Also an appreciation for human innovation. The layout of this place and the ability to see this replica so close is the main treat. It really sinks in how much guts these guys had in making that flight. Walking outside to the markers is a must.

A Clear Sense of History

By James M |

This site commemorated the first controlled flight by the Wright brothers in 1903. The museum was full of interesting personal and technical detail. The outside park marked the first powered flight distances with stone indicators. The main memorial was atop the sand dunes where the brothers tested wing theory with gliders for years prior to the first flight. A wonderful tribute to 2 dedicated men. Definitely worth a visit.

Educational in a Beautiful Place

By Danielle W |

I visited this memorial on a family vacation. I have always been fascinated by the story of the Wright Brothers' first flight. History is a so important and this chapter is one of my favorites. I love learning about the origins of the world's greatest inventions. I would recommend this memorial for anyone. The space is spread out enough to allow an enjoyable experience. I left the memorial having learned a lot but with a renewed curiosity to explore more.

Educational and fun

By Ty B |

It has been 10-plus years since I visited this iconic memorial on the coast of North Carolina. I'm glad I returned on a summer Sunday afternoon to enjoy the very informative museum (which appeared to have updated exhibits) as well as climb the hill to the granite monument to the brothers' achievement. Educational and fun, it's well worth a visit for all ages.

Fascinating piece of history

By 420Lyn1 |

Allow at least a couple of hours to see this place. There’s the indoor museum including a replica of their plane. There’s a runway with markers to show how far they got with each trial flight. It’s worth reading about the Wright Brothers and their family…I thought it was just the 2 brothers but they were 2 out of 8 kids! Their sister was a big influence too. The walk to the memorial and outside sculpture is long but if you go back to your car it’s possible to park a bit closer to that area if you have accessibility issues. It’s fine for the handicapped too but if you’re in a wheelchair pick a healthy person to push as it’s uphill!
The only thing I would like to see added to this is a cafe of some sort. I think they could make a bit more money for the upkeep of the museum if they did. Would definitely recommend this place for a visit.

Educational AND interesting; well worth the visit!

By TravelingClaw |

The National Park museum is a true gem! It goes through the Wright Brothers’ systematic research and development program resulting in the first powered flight. And I learned a new tidbit: their mother was the mechanically minded one in the family, and she was a college graduate in the late 1800s!

Fun Family Day!

By Stephanie B |

A great view to walk around and read about the history of the Wright brothers. There is plenty to do outside and a small museum indoors to take a break from the heat. Plenty to keep all ages engaged.

Worth the stop

By TravlingTexan |

The Ranger inside gave a fantastic 10 minute presentation about the Wright Brothers’ airplane. He kept everyone’s interest. The museum was interesting and it doesn’t take long to see. If it’s a hot day, you can drive from the museum to the monument instead of walking. There are parking spots available near the monument.

Kill Devil Hill is a tough hike.

Major update for 20 years ago (Last visit)

By Joseph K |

Great explanations of what occurred regarding the first controlled flight. Can get crowded (even in November) so go early. Be prepared for wind (Why the Wright brothers chose this place). Nice drive around the dune top monument for those who can't walk it. Somewhat a wild area - we saw a deer cut across a field into some thick cover.

Unforgettable visit!

By NJCricketer |

The entire visit was magical - who would not admire the feats and efforts of the Wright brothers only a 100 odd years ago and the advancements that have taken place since 1903. Beautiful memorial, museum, ranger Tiffany lecture - all in all an unforgettable experience

Incredible National Memorial

By Alicia_JA |

This national memorial is a true testament to the incredible accomplishments of the Wright Brothers. The monuments and the grounds are gorgeous and I spent much more time here than I had anticipated. There were opportunities to do some walking, which I welcomed. It was a bit crowded on the day I went, but I was glad to see so much interest in a NPS site, especially since there was a hefty entrance fee (I don’t mind the fees as they directly support the NPS). It was an amazing experience to stand where the first flight occurred.

Very informative.

By travelrus |

This was a delightful gem. The museum was very interesting and not an insane amount of information. The outside part was very informative, you could see right where they flew.

We went there when it was overcast and somewhat rainy, it would be very hot if it was sunny out, there is no shade.

Would recommend.

First in Flight

By Sweetness01 |

Amazing experience. Thoroughly enjoyed visiting the museum and memorial. Learned about the 4 attempts the Wright Brothers made to experience flight. The memorial has a wonderful view. The weather was beautiful. The memorial is such a remarkable place. However, that hill is definitely a task to climb! Definitely loved the mask required for health and safety precautions.

History Well Presented

By Jonathan M |

The Wright Brothers National Memorial is one of our favorite national park service sites because it connects you to something that is a part of our lives to this day. The same winds that drew Wilbur and Orville to these dunes still whip through your hair as you climb to the impressive monument. The visitor center is spectacular in its design and in the way it presents the importance of what happened here in 1903. Plan to spend at least an hour and everyone should walk the 852 feet that marks the fourth flight of their historic day and then contemplate the fact that only 66 years later men walked on the moon.

Interesting

By Angela S |

We arrived in time to hear the park Tangier’s talk about the site. She was very knowledgeable. The monument was interesting. It is a long walk to the top of the hill so wear comfortable shoes.

Wright Brothers museum is pretty cool

By Ryan Codine |

This national park gives you a taste from back when the Wright Brothers, Wilbur and Orville were in their adolescences attempting their many attempts at flying in the sky with a man-made contraption.

Outstanding History

By LiketoeatCincinnati |

Outstanding historical site where Wright Brothers made first flight. The place is grass covered now but in 1903 this was sand and an ideal place for trying to fly. The monument is really awesome and the visitors center informative. We got in by using the NP annual pass. This is well worth a visit.

Wright Brother’s Museum

The Wright Brothers National Memorial Museum; this is situated in a State park, adequate parking spaces.. There are individual exhibits on the grounds The children were excited to see the preparation and departure of a Light aircraft. The visitor’s center was also amazing. On average a two to three hour visit.

Being from Ohio, as were the Wright brothers, I definitely wanted to visit this place when I vacationed here with a friend. This place is a must-do for history buffs as well as the average citizen. The memorial is a proud monument to two men who changed the world forever. The museum has many artifacts and information about that historic flight. The original runway is still there, with four markers showing how far the first four flights traveled. Employees are very nice and informative.

Worth going if you are in the area

By Dale S |

Very informative and many exhibits and stories about them first flights. You can actually see where they lived during the experiments and spots are marked where each flight landed

Educational stop

By DayTrip226769 |

This museum was very informational. Lots of history and can see how far each flight was. Climbing where they took off from gave the best views.

Worth the visit!

By KabarJaw |

One of the best National Memorials I have been to, I was very impressed. The trail part is a bit empty but if you want to skip it you can drive right up to the memorial.

Inexpensive and for the whole family

By Blessedmamasam |

I had a toddler and the walk to the hill was easy. The grounds are very well kept and bathrooms and water fountain are at the bottom of the hill also bottle refill stations and a photo area. The grounds is very large and have lots to see outside. Inside was very nice clean and informative. You get a free map and it was very cheap. It was $10 an adult and they let my child in free .

Loved this place.

By blackriverwoman |

Entrance fee of $10/person. Be sure to attend the ranger program. Nice visitor center with actual material from the original first airplane. Paved path to beautiful monument on top of Kill Devil's Hill. So glad we were able to come here.

Really nice museum and monument. It fall under the National Park Service so free with the yearly pass ($10 otherwise). Everything is set up well and the grounds give you a good feel of the task at hand. Follow us @WanderingParents

So very inspiring to be in this spot where The Wright Brothers changed the world!

By Leslie G |

Wow. I was quite taken with this place — inspired is an understatement. Just the thought of how the ideas…dreams…determination of these guys changed the world. I’m so glad we ventured here for this experience. The park ranger’s talk was well worth standing in the sun and listening…he was passionate about this place and the history made here.

The walk to the memorial was a nice walk — all the way to the top of Kill Devil Hill. Beautiful monument and part of the inscription won’t soon be forgotten: achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith

Great stop

By vacationgrl2010 |

Great museum stop - very clean and organized well. Fun to see plane replica and learn about Wright Brothers. The kids enjoyed the monuments outside as well. Covid safe inside w masking mandatory. Fun gift shop.

Awesome National Parks Site

By Travelman201777 |

Awesome historical site, made me proud to be an American to be at the site where these two geniuses and their team of local volunteers succeeded after years of hard work. The museum has nice informative exhibits. Highly recommend the walking tour given by knowledgeable, enthusiastic guides. I did it first and it made the rest of my visit better. The walk up to the monument is worth it. Cool statues.

Learning about history is fun.

By BRAD T |

The indoor museum was great. There was lots of information about how the Wright Brothers developed the different versions of their flying machine. There was even a full size replica inside. Outside had the four ending points of the first successful attempts. About a mile from the museum, on top of a large hill, is the monument. There are parking lots much closer to the monument that you can drive to and then walk up the hill (paved paths are all around the hill).

This is a must!!!

By Foodjunkie2004 |

This national park is a must to see. For this I say is because it is where aviation started by a few intelligent people.

This is a great and clean national park. I was very impressed by it. The museum is in great condition, the gift shop is a bit on the smaller side; doesn't seem to sell a lot of stuff.

The tour guide was very interactive and informative. She knew how to present the story and as well as tell it without skipping a beat.

An added benefit is the walk. It aas a great day to walk the entire park to take in all that it had to offer.

Once in a lifetime experience

By Uncle B0b |

We visited the memorial this summer and this is definitely a once in a lifetime experience where you travel back in time and become immersed in the spirit of the day when the Wright brothers lived . Several hours just "flew by" unnoticed. Park ranger ST gave it her all and delivered an excellent presentation - thank you!

Facilities were renovated and comfortable and you have the benefit of taking a nice walk with the enjoyment of some scenic views from the top of the large dune from which the brothers were launching and perfecting their gliders. you also have the opportunity to walk along the path of those first four flights that made history.

A must visit for anyone who loves America and its free spirit, especially families with young children. Next generation inspiration.

Educational but lots of walking

By Adam |

Very neat experience! A lot to be learned on this adventure. Educational, with a lot to see and read about the history of flight and the evolution of the Wright Brothers journey. Lots of walking so wear comfortable shoes.

A must visit when in the Outer Banks!

By April L |

Excellent visit to the memorial. We were part of the tour. The tour guide was very good at telling the history of the Wright Brothers.

A must see

By Kathleen D |

This memorial is very informative of the Wright Brothers determination to stay focused on their goal for flight. The exhibit is very well done and enjoyable to read and learn. There were lots of pictures and an actual replica of one of their planes.

Worth a visit if you like the history of flight

By Johnny H. |

Very nice museum, with indoor and outdoor exhibits. The main building has history panels and a full size replica of the Wright Flyer. But most of your time will probably take place outside, walking the runway (marked with where each flight successfully took off) and on the observation hill.
The hill is a bit of a hike, and really it just gives you a nice high vantage point over the museum grounds and Kill Devil Hills. On the other side of the hill is a sculpture depicting the day of the historic flight. You can walk to drive to it, and it was worth a gander.

Great place to visit

By Homecroft56 |

Wonderful memorial to this monumental American accomplishment. Visitor center had several displays - but no movie. Outside you can see where the four flights the Wright Brothers took on this memorable day began and ended. Up on the hill to the south is the large monument. Great place to visit and to bring your family.

Very informative

By adowneaster |

Plan to spend a half a day and walk up the dune itself and down the path of flight. The museum itself is loaded with information on the Wright family and the flight itself. A definite for families with school age children!

Had no idea!

By Joanne D |

Seriously had no idea what we didn't know about the Wright brothers and first flight.

Very informative, glad we went!

Second trip and loved it!

By Valerie P |

Second time going to the memorial and it was as much fun this time as it was the last time. It’s amazing to be standing on the same ground where flight was born.

Excellent Memorial/Museum/Ranger Presentations

By Willow1223 |

This is a must see when visiting the OBX. Lots of walking. National Memorial is most impressive. The Ranger talks are great. Very informative. You could easily spend 2 to 4 hours here depending on your interests. It’s quite moving when the planes fly low over the site, paying homage to the Wright Brothers. We learned a lot while here!

So Worth It - Glad We Did It!

By rhundt67 |

First off - the Ranger at the ticket booth was amazing! She, although quick, conversed with us and gave us a deal upon entry (should have been $10.00/person = $50.00 but we got in for $40.00 for 5 people and a dog). Yes, this is a dog friendly visit. There is quite a bit of hiking and in August it meant we were sweating, but so what, this place is steeped in history and they do a great job with signs full of information. There is the Kill Devil Hill monument but also several other smaller parts to check out. If you don't want to hike it all, there is a road that circles the monument to allow you to see everything.

Very interesting.

By thebakers400 |

Enjoyed the visit and hike to the top of the hill. The visitors center is very informative and the workers very helpful.

Nice tour and interesting history

By Suzanne M |

We enjoyed our visit here. Learning a lot about history. The visitors center is very nice and informative. The gift store has some interesting items. We paid $10 each to get in. You have to use a credit card as they do not except cash at the checkin booth. Large parking at the visitors center. There is a free tour at random times through out the day outside the visitors center where they tell you about the Wright brothers history and what happened. There are a couple of small buildings that you get to see. Their camp. Looking around the visitors center is very interesting. Our tour guide was very informative and kept the tour entertaining. We got more information from her than inside looking at the displays. But all of the displays were very interesting. They will also do another tour guide talk at the white tent that we did not do. Yes there is a large field to walk around and look at everything. You walk up the steep hill to look at the large monument. There is a closer parking area that you can drive around the hill to get closer to the hill to walk up. There are other things to see that you can drive to. Bathrooms that are very clean and large on the outside of the visitors center. A nice picnic area and another building with bathrooms that you can drive around to. Plan to visit for a hour or more depending on how much you choose to do. Very interesting.

They were geniuses!

By Kristy M |

You think you know the story, but then you come to this landmark and realize you only knew a tiny portion of the story. And it’s all here for you.

Life-size replicas and bits of the story interspersed throughout the Visitors Center and on the property give you a feel for how it must have been more than 120 years ago when the brothers’ first flight trials began.

We walked from the center to the monument, and had a better appreciation for what the area must have a look like a century ago. Wind and sand, and more wind and sand!

Beautiful place with a lot of educational value.

By Barion B |

This is a beautiful place to visit with a lot educational value. Growing up and living my entire life in N.C. ,The first flight was always interesting to me. In elementary school, this isn’t covered as much as I feel it should be. I learned a lot about Orville and Wilbur during my visit.

Beautiful grounds and interesting exhibits

By Sanj2561 |

This national park is a must-do when in the OBX. Very informative exhibits and a great storyline of the Wright Brothers.

If you think you might like it, you are probably going to be very pleased

By dbailey103 |

Fantastic museum. Very well done. Don’t miss the outside bronze exhibit. My favorite part. Highly recommended.
Everyone in the family enjoyed it

Beautiful memorial!

By Chrisha |

Really beautiful memorial! A bit of a hike to the top, but glorious views, and the airplane statue the kids could play on was a wonderful touch. We spent far more time here than we thought we would because we enjoyed it so much!

Fascinating place to visit, don’t miss the Ranger talk

By traveller976 |

Excellent historical site to visit, we were an extended family with an 11 year old and grandparents and everyone found it very interesting. We were fortunate to arrive at the right time for the ranger talk at 11am and he was excellent - such a great story teller and he really set the stage for our visit!! His talk alone was worth the price of admission! Definitely recommend a stop here.

Loved the views at the top!

By Brandi R |

We used our 4th grader’s Get Outside pass to enter. Beautiful, hot morning in July. The visitor’s center is nice. Tells the history of the Wright Brothers. There’s a small giftshop inside. Then you can take the .6 mile walk (one way) up to the monument. On the way you walk past their camp. If you’d prefer to skip the long walk in the hot sun during the summer, you can drive closer to the monument. But it’s a decent incline to the top. Views are worth it though.

If you miss this, you're not American

By Bruce & Laurie |

The highlight of a seven-day vacation. Although we've gone past it on numerous occasions, we had never taken the time to visit. Big mistake. If you have the time - 2+ hours, do so. You'll be enlightened, amazed, and proud. It's a fantastic feeling to walk exactly where Man first flew - actually left the land and flew. The museum alone can take over an hour. The grounds including the reproduction shed where Orville and Wilbur worked, the flight path and the monument (which was where they first started by flying kites) are immensely interesting. This is a MUST SEE / DO !!!

Been lied to for years!!!

By Stealth Reviewer Charlie |

Biggest shocker of my life! Always thought 120 ft was longer and that famous picture was actually in Kittyhawk! I have been lied to for 57 years lol ... For the history and aviation buff ... It's crazy cool that it started here. The museum is okay ... Nothing but replicas except for a wing swatch. You have to pay $10 a person ... You can be in and out in about 10 min if you wanted to ...

Excellent historical visit

By afootdr |

Great historical account !! A part of history that shows true determination and grit !! Can only imagine what they went through !! Very enjoyable !!

Important display of NC History

By MelissaClaire93 |

We had family in town and wanted to bring my baby cousin to see this. There’s a small museum with some information about the brothers and the flight. They have a model hangar so that you can really get a feel and nice visual of the first functioning airplane. The outdoor area has markings of all the first trial flights and a big monument. It’s quite a walk out to the monument but it’s nice views at the top. The volunteer staff member at the front was super knowledgeable and was able to effortlessly answer a few questions we had with great detail. Cute little gift shop. If you have a national park stamp book you can get it stamped here (they even have a stamp you can overlap with a museum in Ohio once you visit both! It’s the only one like this). It didn’t take us long to go through and walk out to the monuments (about 1.5 hours) but it could take longer depending on how long you spend looking at everything. It’s a nice little memorial to NC history and something to see if you’re in the area.

Nice stop

By Preston P |

The museum had so much information. More than I expected and wish I would have had more time. I didn't go up to the actual monument because I had seen it before. But there is a replica/statue of the plane behind the hill that I thoroughly liked.

It's alright at Wright Bros.

By Trish |

Great place, great history, absolutely worth the entry fee. The memorial is beautiful and the walk up to it was some great exercise.

Imagine what was!

By Ron D |

It isn't want is here or you can see.

It is the imagination of what was...

If you see the picture it is plain....concrete and a wing from a plane...

But having read about he wright brothers in several books...I could see the small shed. Having to ferry from the mainland.
The handful of people that lived here when they arrived...
My imagination was seeing this little plane actually get off the ground...go a very short ways and then come down.
They did it!

Great learning experience for family

By greglinmon |

Very good interpretation. In a short time of looking at displays, we learned a large amount of information. The visitor center is clean. Small store. The suspended airplane was outstanding. The walk outside was nice with the rails and markers for flights very visual. This site kept two teenage boys interested. Plenty of parking. It was interested saw very few if any NPS staff while there. People taking money at entrance and store was it. Saw no one else.

Greta Piece of History

By Red-Barchetta2011 |

This is a great place to walk through if you especially if you are into aviation history. As a aviation buff this was a must do visit for me. The museum in not big but they do a nice job to go through the history of the Wright Brothers first flight. Out side they have the markers where the first flight took place in 1903. Than you can take a nice walk to Kill Devil Hill and the monument they erected in honor of their achievements. If you don't want to walk from the first flight markers to the monument you can drive you car over and than than walk up the hill to the monument. There were great views from the top of hill. The top if Kill Devil Hill is where the Wright Brothers did a lot of their glider experiments. We did not spend too much time in the visitor center. There was tour group and it was crowded and did not like to be inside with too many people. To me this was one draw back. For me I really did not miss much because I know a lot of the history of Wright Brothers and the Wright Flyer. But this is a must see place if you visit he outer banks. A piece of important history for America and the world.

Great Memorial

By mstugger |

We enjoyed our visit to this memorial. The exhibits are good. It's a good idea that you can re-visit anytime in the next 7 days.

Must see!

By barbershopchick |

This is my second time here. It’s a definite must see as we can thank the Wright brothers (and their sister) for their perseverance in flight. Lots to see and do here. There is walking if you want to see the area they first took flight and more strenuous climb to the monument, but all is paved.

A memorial to two pioneering icons of history.

By Hudsonmccraw |

What a wonderful opportunity to visit a place where events in history would forever change the world, for the better. There is a small museum on the grounds with a replica of the first airplane. The markers for the duration and place of each of the first four flights are there, as well as a few outdoors exhibits showcasing replicas of the hangar and living quarters for the Wright brothers. There is a hill with a monument to the pioneers of aviation. It is a must visit of a place for anyone visiting the OBX area, regardless of whether one is an aviation enthusiast or not.

Beautiful day for a walk in history

By NJOYNC2CA |

You cannot go wrong visiting Kitty Hawk. $10 per person to get in is well worth it. Everything is well done. The ranger tours are a not miss. Beautiful walking. History everywhere. Take the time to read everything and walk the hill. The visitor's center is excellent!

Nice historic place to see

By carolynl654 |

Not much to actually see there but it’s neat being actually at the spot of such a historic event. Be prepared!! It’s $10 per person to even drive in. There’s a giant monument up on a hill that you can walk to but the best part is actually seeing how far each of the first flights really were, which are clearly marked with granite stones. The museum has a brief history of their childhood along with a detailed timeline of their work. If you’re really into aviation this is great, small kids?? I’d skip it until they’re old enough to know from the history books of what happed here.

10 out of 10

By Michele D |

Loved it. Perfect place to sneak some learning into the fun times. The kids have space to run and explore after a 10 minute Ranger talk ... I learned somethings.

Amazing!

By Nicole W |

This monument is a must-see. The walk to the top of the Kill Devil Hill itself is an eye opening experience- I cannot imagine dragging an entire glider up there! My son absolutely loved everything about it! Highly recommend!

Great way to spend a few hours and learn some history

By Gautam R |

Loved it! Something there for people of all ages! The museum has excellent exhibits, and it was really cool to see how far the planes flew. For those who want to do a bit more, hiking up to the gliding spot was fun with great views. A really awesome way to spend a couple hours.

Very well done park and visitor's center

By Dan B |

Since its part of the National Park Service there is an entrance fee. However, its well worth the time and cost. Visitors' center shows the Wright Brother's efforts thru time in great detail, the grounds where the flights occurred are well marked, and there's even a scale model of the initial flight taking off just behind the monument.

Nice memorial

By SAch40 |

Arrived on Tuesday after Memorial Day around 10:30 am. Nice memorial, great weather. Filled up fast. Nice walk along distance monuments and up to dune monument.

An American Treasure

By JenPNC |

This memorial is so beautifully laid out, with acres of space that allow visitors to walk, ride bikes, or drive to the various points of interest. We walked around the entire park, visiting each distance marker, the monument, the really beautiful sculptures depicting the flight, and the visitor center. (The workers there are so friendly.) The visitor center has a timeline in photos of the Wright Brothers lives and achievements. I thought the design of the visitor center was brilliant- understated and very representative of what it depicted. Definitely an unforgettable experience and we came away understanding and a much better appreciation of the context and geography of the amazing feats and intelligence of Wilbur and Orville Wright.

Well Worth the Visit!

By Vicky P |

Only $10 per adult (16 +) and Free for kids 15 @ under!
Very friendly and helpful park rangers. The museum was air conditioned (thankfully!) Masks are required indoors, but not outdoors. Very informative and well organized displays. You get to see an exact replica of the first flight machine the Wright Bros built and used! There’s a nice store to buy souvenirs at. No bags to carry your purchases in except if you choose to buy one of two choices available. I bought the .80 bag for the t-shirt I bought. Loved that you can walk where they marked the distances of the 1st through the 4th flights. An all around enjoyable experience.

Nice monument

By Yea W |

I visited on a late Friday afternoon, around 4pm. It wasn't busy at that time, plus the weather was windy, cloudy and cold. It was great visiting this monument and learning the history behind it

Dedicated to the history of flight

By D B |

The visitor center is wonderful. If you love aviation and a can do spirit, you will enjoy this place. Arrive early and plan to spend 2 hours.

Plan well

By Sarahaas |

We got there around 4 ish. We didn't realize they closed at 5. It should take about and hour and a half to see everything. We felt rushed. Definitely start earlier in the day. HOWEVER, the man at the admission booth said we could come back the next day if we ran out of time using our receipt. It was a LOT of walking even if you drive to the monument. We just couldn't do the big hill.

Not to be Missed

By LKM |

Visitng this memorial made the whole trip to the OBX worth it. It's a beautifully run national monument, with an excellent museum and well-designed historical markers. Perfect place to take children.

Too crowded, given the virus problem

By Michael S |

We have been to about 60 national parks, monuments, etc. This one is of interest because of the history. A large marker stands on top of a hill, there is a small visitor center, a full scale model of the plane on the far side of the loop around the marker, and a few other buildings. While we were at the visitors center, it was packed with people and few wearing masks. The attitude that the virus was gone because 2020 was gone, seemed to be prevalent everywhere we went on this trip. We opted to not tour the visitors center displays or gift shop for this reason. Seeing the marker is no problem. It's quite prominent, and you can drive all the way around it.
If you have the time, the drive along highway 264 getting there was more interesting, in my opinion.

Up, up and away

By Rosemary G |

We had a great visit with an excellent talk by the Park Ranger. You could tell she really liked her job. I read David McCullough’s book about the Wright Brothers before I went.

Been to Dayton, Dearborn, D.C. and now Kitty Hawk!

By Kate Illinois1 |

We have been to Dayton Ohio- replica bicycle shop, family home site and museum, Dayton Air Force Museum- Wright Brother's 1901 Wind Tunnel, Dearborn Michigan- the real family home and Bicycle shop that was moved to the Ford's Greenfield Village. D.C. National Air Space Museum- original flyer. Now, we finally made it to Kitty Kawk. Lots to see and read in the museum. The female ranger did a great job demonstrating how to operate the flyer. We enjoyed every area walking around and actually learned a few more details.

Worthwhile visit

By smoo75 |

Seeing this historical site was very interesting and brought some history I had learned years ago to life. I found it fascinating to see the spot where the first flight took place. It is quite the climb up to the monument but I thought it was well worth it. It was a rather warm day so I wish we would have driven to the parking area at the base of the hill; I didn't realize how much parking was avilable there. I also enjoyed seeing the replica of the plane by the monument.

Our history

By deeremom430 |

I've been here several years ago, but came back with my aunt and uncle visiting from Michigan. It was a chilly day and there were not many visitors. We were able to take our time with the exhibits. We walked up to the monument and spent time seeing everything there. Then we drove around to the metal statues on the far side. There is so much to see and learn here, allow several hours for your visit.

Highlight of our OBX trip

By MG29851 |

This is a great place to learn about the Wright Brothers and the beginnings of flight. I love how they have the markers of the first 4 flights. It's a must-do if you're in the area. The walk up to the big memorial on the dune is super steep, but worth the hike.

Nice place, quick trip

By mgmorgan |

Its a nice place to visit. We thought there was more to see. There is the monument on the top if the hill, it gets steep towards the top, many didn't make it up. It's a quick place to visit, we were done in 2 hours.

Has gotten a lot more interesting

By Kitan G |

Was here years ago and it has gotten a lot better. Excellent museum, guide lecture, and outdoor exhibits for elementary school age and up. They really give an understanding of how difficult the achievement was and at sense of proportion of how primitive it was compared to now. For example, one exhibit had markers for the first day's flights and kids can run the same course and compare their times (often faster!). The monument may now be the least interesting thing there, except to people who enjoy climbing the hill.

A historic spot

By harryatkck |

The National Park Service administers this memorial & charges admission unless you have a pass. The visitor center is interesting. It has a full-scale model of the plane flown by the Wright Brothers & several exhibits on the principles of flight. There are 2 reconstructed buildings outside the visitor center. One is a hanger & the other is the Wight Brothers workshop & living quarters used while they prepared their airplane for the first flight. The actual flight path of the first fight is well marked & you can walk it. There is also a large memorial to the Wright Brothers that is located quite a distance away from everything else. If you are interested in the history of flight, you have to come here.

Fabulous Display of the Wright Brothers First Powered Flight!

By Pat H |

Every part of this Memorial space is filled with fascinating details about Wilbur and Orville Wright's historic first powered flight. The details about their perseverance and hard work in the Outer Banks at the beginning of the 20th century are truly inspirational. All the displays are will documented and attractively done. This was such a momentous moment in the history of aviation, truly ushering in the age of manned flight. It is awe-inspiring to see the dedication they displayed in such a physically difficult environment. Their strong values permeate their story, as well as the hard work they did. This is a memorial worth visiting when in the Outer Banks. Please don't miss climbing to the top of the dune to see the beautiful memorial.

First in Flightq

By Shawn H |

The education center was well done. Lots to learn and worth the stop. Fun to learn the details behind the Wright Brothers and their journey to flying

Such amazing history!

By DJB002 |

Loved visiting this memorial. Such amazing history. Lots of walking but I enjoyed it since we drove the rest of the day. Getting up the hill was a bit tough but so worth it. Highly recommend this memorial.

Enjoyable! Just don't arrive early.

By Tracy R |

We enjoyed our visit here! Just a heads up though, don't come too early because it's got a locked gate down by the busy road til right at 9AM. Cars were getting backed up there with nowhere to go. If you show up just after 9 it's fine.

Interesting.

By Sherry |

Very interesting and informative museum. I learned new things about the Wright Brothers. Curators did a great job with displaying details.

Fun family adventure!

By Rodney Lyles |

This is a great place to visit, for families or single travelers. My wife and I had a great time learning about the dedication and determination that the Wright brothers showed in their pursuit of flight. There were some fun activities and great exercise in touring the property and climbing the monument.

A must stop

By Staci A |

The tour guides are fantastic, fun and informative. The visitor center has a wonderful exhibit. And standing on top of the hill at the monument where the Wright Brothers took flight and looking down to the markers where they landed really transports you back to their day.

Very special visit

By Lisashubby |

Amazing history, especially for aeronautics buffs! You are taken back in time to the birth of flight.

History of the first flight comes to alive here.

By Gregg-Midlo |

The first flight of man comes alive at the Wright brothers memorial monument. Especially loved the life-size replica of the airplane and those at the first flight available for children and adults climb aboard ship along side the Wright brothers at the back of the base of the monument

Not worth the price of admission

By Review-er-er_er |

This park is overpriced for what there is to it. It’s literally a Visitor’s Center, a barn, a few signs and a sculpture. That is all.

Just mostly empty fields and a trail through the empty fields.

People who are rating this highly must not get out too much and therefore have a very poor frame of reference when it comes to National Monument and Park sites. That or they are very easily impressed.

We have a Lifetime National Parks Pass so it cost us nothing. Even at that, we didn’t spend very much time here at all.

Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. This area is FULL of refuges and lighthouses and other attractions that are free or of similar cost.

Highlight of our trip to OBX

By havanadaydreamer |

I learned so much about the Wright Brothers that I never knew. Very education and impressive. It's a must see at OBX.

Rainy Day Must

By k l |

The people at the desk were more than informative, having never really paid attention in school I soon realized there was so much more to the wright bros flight than I knew.

Great museum

By Julia K |

Wonderful place to learn about the history of the Wright brothers. Museum well organized. Fun areas for kids. They even offered a ranger badge to kids for completing some simple activities. Only down size is there is a lot of walking.

A pilgrimage for any aviation enthusiast!

By Stewfoot |

Bucket list item has been to fly into First Flight Airfield. Check! The monument is a short walk away. Museum tells much about the early research and development done by the wright brothers.

Where the sky has been tamed

By Allimuth |

An iconic place. Well preserved. A museum full of memorabilia that tells the adventure of the Wrigt brothers from the beginning when they built bicycles in Ohio. Not to be missed for lovers of flying and for all the curious.

Great view

By mizzrhoades |

The walk up was a little more exercise than I wanted that day but it was well worth it! The view was fantastic. I will be going again just because it was a nice view when I reach the top of the hill.

Nice Monument - History - Recommend

By CindyMcN |

We stopped here and only had a half hour but honestly could have stayed a few hours to walk around, see and read everything. Very nicely set up and lots of history. Lots of walking or they do have a car that will take you around - still have to climb the hill to the memorial though but worth the steps. Glad we went and would recommend.

Another Great National Park

By Sharron H |

Our hotel was a few miles from the Wright Brothers Memorial, so we drove over out of curiosity and were not disappointed. The interactive exhibits were instructive. We did not climb the hill because of the heat during summer, but this park is well worth a visit.

Amazing History takes you to new heights!

By Master Planner |

The contents and story within the NPS Visitor Center were well done, and brought details of all the struggles, work effort, inspiration, and final success front and center. Reproduction plane on site. Mostly reading, not interactive which was fine. The adjacent Monument Marker and marked milestones measured in feet in the wide open space from when man-made motorized Flight took off, really puts you there with a little imagination. Ranger talk we’ll done and highlights much of what is included on the museum placards. Best part of our beach vacation.

A timeless tribute worth visiting

By adventix |

I first visited the Wright Brothers National Memorial nearly 20 years ago, and returning with my family this time was just as fun. The museum is excellently curated – informative, engaging, and genuinely educational for all ages. The exhibits do a wonderful job telling the story of the Wright Brothers' journey from bicycle builders in Ohio to aviation pioneers. The full-scale replica of the original Wright Flyer is particularly impressive and serves as the centerpiece of the indoor displays. The outdoor grounds are well-maintained, with markers showing where each historic flight took off and landed. The monument itself is beautiful, atop Kill Devil Hill. The views from the top are stunning. We timed our visit to catch the sunset, and it made the experience even more spectacular – I'd highly recommend planning for late afternoon if possible.

Well worth the time to visit

By Lorraine B |

So much history here. The grounds are gorgeous, it is laid out very well for walking. There was a park ranger giving talks but we chose to just navigate the grounds on our own. There is even a replica of the plane used with bronze characters. There is a small fee to enter the park but so worth it.

Wright Brothers Memorial soars above expectations

By Evelyn H |

My husband and I have always wanted to visit Kitty Hawk where the birthplace of flight began. We could not let our trip to the Outer Banks fail to include this stop. This memorial was even more interesting and informative than we imagined. The timeline of the Wright Brothers chronicling their lifetime from childhood to the first flight was so excellently done and easy to follow with many old pictures on display taken from the Wright Brothers collection. The information on the research studied, sources used and data collected wonderfully reinforced how amazing their feat of flight was and the long journey it took them to accomplish it. The museum visit concluded with the life size version of their “glider” with information about the various problems they overcame or had to solve to get in the air. Markers outside showing the various flights distances again highlighted their amazing accomplishment. We ended our self guided tour at the monument erected in honor of Orville and Wilbur. Plenty to see so allow at least several hours if you are a history buff at all.

Must see

By Victoria H |

Really a must see while on the outer banks. It is a beautiful way to remember the Wright Brothers. The setting is just beautiful.

Worth a visit.

By neesejoct11 |

Listened to an informative ranger talk on Orville and Wilbur's beginning. Very interesting. Walked up to the memorial, and enjoyed the bronze plane and the moment their flight was captured on film all in bronze. Cool place. Was pleased to learn we could use our lifetime national Park pass there. Worth a visit.

Nice outing

By Tricia E |

This was fascinating! I was skeptical that I would find it interesting and it really was. We took a 12 and 13 year old and they were into it too.

Informative with easy access

By Jessica K |

This park is easy to get to, the ticket lasts for more than one day, the signs are very informative, there is a lot of space to walk around, and the different parts are accessible by driving.

Great time at Wright Brothers Museum!

By Kristie S |

Our family enjoyed visiting the Wright Brothers National Memorial. The view from memorial is breathtaking and definitely worth the walk!

Great piece of history

By DeeS9348 |

Thoroughly enjoyed it! I drove the loop road and was able to get out and take pictures of the sculpture. If you have any disabilities that prevent long periods of walking, don't try the paths. You can still enjoy the memorial

A moment in History to See and Relive

By ron S |

One reason we went to the Outer Banks was to see this National Monument. I love airplanes and anything to do with them. This one has a small museum and gift shop. Inside the museum is a replica of the Wright Brothers first airplane. The original is in the Smithsonian Air and Space museum. Lots of information on who the Wright Brothers were and how they made it work. I knew there was a hill but had forgotten on never knew it was only used for their glider practice that helped them get to the point of powered flight. We walked up the hill a little distance from the visitor center. Here is the huge Monument to the Wright Brothers. Wonderful views of the area and of the flight field. After coming down we checked out the replica buildings where they lived and worked. Next to them is a large rock where the flights left from. If you look down there is a rail that was used to leave as they didn't have wheels. Looking on out you see where each progressive flight went. Also it said which Brother was the pilot. The first 3 flights were short compared to the 4th. The biggest change from those early years is that grass has been planted to stabilize the sand. Once leaving the parking lot go around behind Kill Devil Hill. There is a metal artist piece of what it looked like on the first flight. Statues of everyone who was there to participate and witness this moment in history. The whole Monument is a great education piece for the young and old.

Monument to flight.

By Mike_Nancy |

Work to preserve history. The 4th flight was the history maker. Kids loved to climb on metal replica in circle around monument. Inside is display and replica. Social distance observed. I suggest asking questions of staff. Brings the story to life.i spend an hour. Walked to momument & museum.

The Wright Place To Learn About Flying

By SuperAdventure |

We stopped here while on vacation in Kill Devil Hills. It was a good stop for a few hours and so our kids could learn about the history of flight. The junior ranger program here is good for kids to do. We did the museum first and learned the history. Then we walked out to the statues recording the first few flights. It is hot in this area in the summer, bring water. Then we went back in the museum to hand in the junior ranger books. Then we went back to the car and drover out to the monument on the hill. If you drive around the the monument, you can see some statues on the far side and it also makes the walk to the top shorter.

Must do if you are rolling through..

By Steph M |

There were a lot of people here when we went. However, my family loved how cheap it was to visit. The monument itself is a bit of a hike uphill, but very worth it!

Good historic place to see

By Dmpishock |

A very cool place to see and kill a few hours at the OBX. Very close to our condo so a no brained to visit for the first time as usually stay in DUCK. The history is amazing and how these two created and finished their task of flight. Placards everywhere and lots to read and see. The monument is a nice little walk and nothing too harsh on a good weather day. Cool place to see

Enjoyed More than I Imagined

By Smiles4miles |

Before visiting this memorial I read David McCullogh's biography about the Wright Brothers, and I'm so glad I did. However, I didn't realize how impactful visiting the actual location would be. At the site it strikes you just how difficult and physically challenging dragging that plane up the hill repeatedly was. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit and are so glad we made this stop. If you have the America Senior Park pass entry is free.

plane good

By rodgerk943 |

if you are into history then you will love this place, tell how, the wright brothers went about building the plane and all the troubles they had and how they fixed it,just a neat place

Nice Walk After Driving A While

By Robin G |

We were driving along the coast and decided to stop here. It was nice and we were glad we stopped.

History Baby!

By Kuvasz1988 |

As a frequent flyer it was so wonderful to see the origins of flight. Such history here. I was awe struck by what was accomplished here. Consider the logistics needed in 1903 to complete these tasks. Astounding.

Nice visit

By Rich |

Really enjoyed revisiting.
Visitor center small but nice. Exact points the brothers progressed in thier initial flights are marked by markers. Then can take nice walk up to the memorial located on a hill. Listened to ranger talk. Don't forget to drive to model/statues on other side of memorial. Nice for kids.

A wonderful tribute

By Charlotte D |

I really enjoyed this, my whole life. I’ve always loved flying, and knew the story of the Wright brothers first flight, but it was amazing to go there and see the great tribute to the first flight. The museum was very enlightening, and the grounds are beautifully well kept the monument in the plane that we could take pictures in front of was inspiring. But don’t walk in the grass. There’s tiny cactus everywhere.

bigger than you think

By Michelle H |

We accidently came on the day of the kite festival so there was no park fee that day but it was very busy (clearly much busier than normal) and it started raining so all the people there for the kite festival were trying to stand in the visitor's center making it a bit hard to move around. The visitor's center is very nice with a replica of the flyer. Out on the grounds they have two buildings showing what their camp was like. And then stone markers that show the first few flights. One of the Jr Ranger activities was to race along the markers to see if you could travel faster than the first flights so the kids had a lot of fun doing that. The monument is at the top of the hill you can clearly see it from anywhere in the park. While it's a paved path the hike up the hill is steep so people with mobility problems would have a hard time getting up there. The sculptor is on the other side of the hill. It would have been a nice walk if it wasn't for the rain but we powered through. However the park layout is much bigger than you might think and there is probably some benefit if you can't walk easily to drive over and park at the base of the monument to see that and the sculptor. The rangers and support staff were all very friendly.

Must See

By TravelMavenWorld |

This is a must see for anyone with school age kids! Since the dawn of time, man has wanted to fly, but the actual accomplishment was quite a feat. It is a lesson in human endeavor: from concept to fruition was a long, fraught journey, but the Wright Brothers were up to the task.

Great afternoon visit

By aliciaburge |

My husband and I both greatly enjoyed this! There is a small museum with the history of the events. We also sat a listened to a ranger tell the story of the events both leading up to the first flight and after. Very interesting!

Interesting Story Telling

By Nicholas B |

It’s an interesting place with excellent displays. The telling of the Wright family story is on par with any narrative.

Interesting

By Katie H |

Definitely a must see. Took kids ages 7, 9 & 11 who enjoyed the learning experience. Things are a bit spread out so it can be a lot a walking to see everything

A National Treasure!

By cooker72 |

An American icon, that we have heard of our entire lives, was great! The replicas of the plane were great,,,the statues of the Wright Brothers and their friends were well done too! The visitor center was nice with lots of informative exhibits. We were lucky to hear a Ranger Talk. He gave lots of background information. A nice sop in the Outer Banks!

A must see

By trojan77 |

Very educational and historically interesting. Buildings of the Wright Brothers for living and working still on the site along with indicators of the path of first flight.

Walk where history happened

By Michael A |

Great place to learn about Orville and Wilbur Wright and the first powered flight. Beautiful full size replica of the flyer. One of the few places where you can stand right where history happened. If you can, listen to one of the ranger talks. They are always well done and I formative. Be sure to walk up to the Memorial for some great views and don't miss the life-size sculpture behind the memorial.

A MUST SEE

By sage97 |

Not enough to see but well worth the visit. The rangers are great. Lots of reading and pictures. The children can become jr. rangers. Great activity for the young. You will need at least 2 hours to enjoy it all. It cost 10 per person. Must wear your mask in the museum. Be prepared for an uphill walk to the monument, great views from the top.

Fantastic Tour - Great Historical Site

By TravelSunrise22 |

My husband and I really enjoyed the historical talk provided by the knowledgeable park ranger. The exhibits inside were interesting and the outdoor sculpture and building replicas. We would highly recommend this stop to anyone in the area.

Wright Memorial

By Amanda |

We really enjoyed the museum and monument. My son wanted to go here after learning about the Wright brothers in school. The museum was really nice and held my kids (ages 7 and 10) attention. They completed the Junior Ranger booklet and had a good time figuring out all the answers. There is a replica of the Weight brothers cabin and hanger outside and markers showing the distance of their first flights. The monument is on top of a big hill, but my kids didnt even complain during the walk.

We got here when it opened in the morning, this was probably a good idea as the line to get in was much longer as we were leaving.

Beautiful Memorial

By danbrenda2016 |

If you are anywhere near the OBX, it's well worth the time to stop here and learn about how the Wright brothers got everything started with aviation. Nice museum and grounds, and the monument is gorgeous.

Closed due to Government Shutdown

By MarkS |

Visited on 26th October only to find the site completely closed due to the government shutdown. Very Disappointed. The website has not been updated since 10th October so is misleading.

Great history of Wrights Brothers

By Kristi S |

Inside the visitor center is great historical information about the Wrights Brothers. Outside are spaced markers of their first four flight attempts. You can walk to each one to see their speed, distance and who was flying. It is a long walk from the visitor center up to the monument. Great views from the top of the monument. Would suggest visiting on a cooler or cloudy day.

Outstanding!

By DisneyDarwin |

Very good museum and outdoor exhibits, plus a nicely supplied gift shop. Take a ranger tour —- they make it come alive! On our tour, Amy gave us a vivid picture of Wilbur amd Orville’s struggles and time leading up to First Flight. The walk up to the memorial on the hill was the cherry atoo our visit.

Very nice park

By arewehavingfunyet4 |

Enjoyed it very much. Plenty of parking, clean and nice gift shop. The grounds are immaculately groomed and it’s easily accessible.

The Wright Stuff

By BillyMike52 |

Very impressive, educational, enjoyable place to visit. The park service has a very informational presentation that explains the invention process of the first sustained flight airplane. The grounds feature the monument atop a very high hill, the Wright Brothers living quarters reproduction and hangar, and the path of the first flight and depictions of the first 3 attempts. Highly recommend.

Educational opportunity for the family

By Nadia L |

Being from Ohio we had to visit. Important history was made here and the site does a fine job laying out the details. The indoor museum has a replica glider and interesting details about the Wright Brother’s family and how they developed an interest in flight. There was a lot of reading on the inside display so the line crawled very slowly to view everything. There’s a nice little gift shop and clean restrooms. The monument on the hill is quite a hike so we didn’t attempt. I didn’t really feel like it was worth the cost of admission but it was educational. They need more benches or places to sit around the outside exhibits.

So much fun

By Mark M |

We loved our visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial. It was so interesting and there was plenty to keep the kids interested. The tour was great and the museum was outstanding. Great views from the top of the dune with the memorial.

History...

By Craig |

The national park that honors the Wright Brothers is well worth the time. The museum features the story of flight through pictures and artifacts. There is parking for many.

Neat piece of history

By HAM04 |

This was such a great trip for us! Parking wasn’t an issue, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable about our questions. Displays were neat and actually getting to see a piece of the cloth to the wing was fascinating. We walked the runway and walked to the monument. Kind of a long hike for someone who is older or has trouble getting around. We would recommend visiting to anyone fascinated with history.

An unexpected gem

By N W |

I was somewhat ambivalent about visiting this site, but I was in the area and have a lifetime National Park pass, so I figured why not. I was blown away by one of the best visitor centers I’ve seen. The exhibits are outstanding - they capture the passion, dedication and inspiration of the Wright Brothers dreams of flying and they offer it in a way that can appeal to all ages. The replica plane makes it all tangible as do the outdoor exhibits showing the length of each flight. I was less smitten by the memorial but it does offer a great view, a place to stretch your legs and a real feel for what it took to keep testing gliders and planes among the dunes of Kitty Hawk. Definitely worth a visit!!

Wright Brothers

By Fearless799687 |

12 seconds that changed the World put Wilbur and Orville Wright at this isolated place called Kill Devil Hills which was a very large sand dune. The brothers would initially carry their airplane to the top of the sand dune to fly towards the large sandy flat field in front of them. They actually got help from locals to carry the airplane. Later this method proved to be futile and eventually moved to the flat area where they eventually succeeded in being the first people in history to fly a machine heavier than air in a controlled sustained flight on December 17, 1903. Twenty five years later to the day after their historic flight at this remote site three thousand people from over 40 nations gathered here to witness the laying of the cornerstone for the Wright Brothers Monument. Amelia Earhart also attended along with Orville Wright. It was the first time in history that a living person witnessed seeing a Monument to themselves being erected.

Fun Place

By Airmedic24 |

This is an incredible place to study the history of aviation. I visited this place as a kid and there has been SO much more added since that time. This is a must see for NC history.

Beautiful Park for Aviation History

By Steve M |

This is a beautiful memorial and a tribute for two pioneers in aviation history. I will start off the entrance fee is $10.00 per person 16 and older. The park grounds are well taken care of. You can walk to where the plane took off and see the markers of each event during take off. You will see a replica of the hangar and a wright flyer inside the visitors center.

Breathtaking views

By Marie B |

The main building is very clean and informative. The monument is beautiful. Although we could not walk up the hill to see it up close, it was great to be able to drive up the hill to get a little closer to it. Wonderful information on how the Wright Brothers were able to accomplish flight. If you are in the area it is a must see. It doesn't take that long and it is well worth it.

Informative

By Joel M |

The area is really nice. It is explained very well by docents. The landmark is impressive. The museum is real nice and informative. Family oriented.
