I like western history and this museum has nice exhibits, especially of the earlier years, with Native American offerings, as well as pioneer days. The later parts of the experience are not quite as strong, but overall a nice experience and introduction to Wyoming.

I enjoyed killing some time at this museum. There's 2 floors - 1st floor is more about early beginnings of WY, 2nd floor more recent history. I enjoyed both. Don't forget to check out the boot outside of the museum.

Nice collection detailing the history of Wyoming. Our daughter loved the kids play area that reminded us of Little House on the Prairie. They also offer great kids' programs once a month.

Very historical environment and shows you a lit history of Wyoming. Brought my brother along and he was very impatient so we went through everything pretty quickly. Overall, beautiful place to take family and friends to!

We stopped here on our way to the Denver Airport and were thrilled with the detour. This museum was wonderful in giving us a true lesson in Wyoming history. Unfortunately, we were limited in time and only spent about 1 hour, but would have loved to see more!

Fantastic museum.
Cheyenne is the most laid back, low key state capital we've ever seen. We parked basically in front of the museum, on the street. It's easy to find parking about anywhere downtown. A kind lady at the the Wyoming Welcome center shared that if you have out of town license plates, you can park for free at the open air parking deck on 17th st. That was our plan, but we found 2 hour parking everywhere we went.
The museum is self-guided and has a little bit about so many aspects of Wyoming, from the renovation at the capital, to native peoples, mining and fossils. All of the displays are clearly marked, even the things they "want" you to touch and experience- which is really cool if you have small children along. There is a children's hands on experience room that looked interesting.
Very worthwhile stop if you're visiting Cheyenne. And the price absolutely can't be beat.

The Wyoming State Museum was a great find on Google search. We had a stop in Cheyenne and wanted something to do on the warm summer day. Easy to find, park and enjoy the displays. Learned of Wyoming's great contribution on equality. Natural history and National Park info. is a favorite of ours. Pleased we took the time to see it.

The Wyoming State Museum is a great place to start your trip in the area. It is free and provides a comprehensive yet brief overview of the history of Wyoming. You can cruise through the museum in an hour or two and leave with an understanding of the locations you will see throughout the state.

Donation-based museum with excellent displays! I learned so much about Wyoming's history, ranging from the time of the dinosaurs to modern times! I would highly recommend it.
There was plenty of free street parking outside.

Beautiful historical walk! We learned so much about what make Wyoming a national treasure . Truly educational and a pleasure of an afternoon.

The Wyoming State Museum in Cheyenne, which was established in 1895. is the official state repository for any and all materials concerning Wyoming's history and culture. And that's a lot more than you'd think. Located at 2301 Central Avenue in the state capital, the museum's permanent exhibits include coal, wildlife, fossils, Wyoming settlement, Native American culture and history, the National Park Service in Wyoming, recreation, tourism and artwork. In 2017, it opened a children's area called the Hands-On Habitats Lab. It features interactive exhibits that teach visitors about the flora and fauna in five Wyoming habitats. Current exhibits and collections on display include: artifacts of life in Wyoming from prehistoric times to the present; Native American artifacts from the Northern Plains region, including a Lakota horse mantle and Shoshone hide painting; clothing and personal items, including everyday dress for men, women and children such as military uniforms, bodice, skirt, bustle, baby shoes, pocket watch and band uniform jacket; household items such as furniture, coffee pots, quilts and knick-knacks, including an easy chair, wedding ring quilt detail and alarm clock; transportation artifacts such as a railroad signal lantern, automobile license plate and western stock saddle; tools for the home, laborers and skilled professionals, including an eggbeater, camera, medical examination chair and wood plane; recreation artifacts such as childhood toys, sports equipment, musical instruments, a coloring book and toy tea set; artwork, including original oil paintings and sculpture and prints created by Wyoming artists and works depicting Wyoming's diverse people and places, including an oil painting by Minerva Teichert and a photograph by Sue Rosoff; Natural History, featuring examples of minerals, ancient fossils and animal life, including fossilized fish and the skeleton of the extinct black footed ferret. There's a lot more to Wyoming than Devils Tower, Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

Well, in preparing for this review...I looked at the 'terrible' comments...this museum has had a complete make over.
I have been in lots of museums, and had been in this Wyoming State Museum several years back.
Totally surprised. A great experience. Loved the displays. There must have been an experienced group of professionals that had selected artifacts and commentary.
As I am a native of Wyoming, I found quite a number of displays concerning history of Wyoming that I was not aware of.
One disappointment was the two sheep by the sheep herders wagon...they were 'clean' ha. I would prefer to see sheep as they look coming off the range.
Thanks so much Wyoming!

This museum was very interesting and fun to walk through. The docents were friendly and helpful. Definitely worth your time to visit.

This is an exceptional museum of western history! Beautiful displays, wonderful gift shop! The staff was kind and courteous and very helpful! I could spend hours there and not see everything! Great for families, a date, or just for a day to oneself!

This is by far one of the best free museums I have ever visited! The displays are professionally designed and presented. The signage is easy to read. There are interactive activities and exhibits for children. This is a must-do when you are in the area!

I found this free, two story (with elevator) museum amazing with all there was to see and do. I was there when a group of school children were visiting and it was fun watching them enjoy the museum especially the interactive " Hands on Habitat Area" where you could smell a ponderosa pine, hear elk bugle, crawl through a prairie dog tunnel, etc. Wyoming is known as a "dinosaur graveyard" so there was lots of info on prehistoric times. Along the way I learned fun facts about WY such as there are over 400,000 pronghorn antelope in WY (only 750,000 in entire US) which exceeds the population of the state or the fact the tallest building in the entire state is the dormitory at the University in Cheyenne. If a subject pertains to WY, it is featured here. One of the more unusual exhibits I liked featured Thomas Molesworth (1890-1977) who designed a distinctive style of furniture that was functional and looked like it belonged in the Wild West. Outside the museum is my favorite of the 25 eight foot high boots (part of a fundraising project for the Depot Museum) titled "Licensed to Boot" created by a junior high art club from old license plates. The museum offers free off street parking and has a great gift shop. I spent three days sightseeing in Cheyenne, and my afternoon here was my favorite stop.

We were at the Botanical Garden and they recommended this place as it's free. My kiddo is 7 1/2 and she really enjoyed it. Some interactive stuff. Lots to see on 2 floors about Wyoming. Fun, affordable items in the gift shop.

Nice place as we walked the city stopped in friendly and free. Donations are whatever you feel. Cute for kids and area history. I say visit if you are walking the city stop in I would not make a special trip there.

Very nice museum covering a large variety of exhibits for a donation. Dinosaurs, fossils, mining, settlers, military and Native American exhibits on two floors. Would take 2 hours if you read everything. Learned a lot in an hour. Bring a sweater.

Every museum can only show a fraction of its collection, and the Wyoming State Museum is no exception to that rule. As a result, the exhibits change every few months, others are refurbished, etc. There are new exhibits at the museum which will be here for several years - so if you've been before it's time to go back! On 2nd floor is an exhibit about the National Park Service in Wyoming (to coincide with the National Park Service's 100th anniversary) and another exhibit regarding the history of the Wyoming State Capitol which will be there until the Capitol's renovation is finished - so another two years. The museum staff are very friendly, too.
Most of the exhibits are not interactive - you actually need to read the explanatory placards. But why not??? They are informative and you'll learn a lot!

This Museum is great for Wyoming History. It is free and covers a lot of history. It is very well put together

I really enjoyed going to the museum in the past and look forward to going in the future. Friendly, professional individuals.

I really went to see the capitol building but that was being restored, so...
This is right nearby so thought I'd check it out. So glad I did. This is not the most impressive in terms what is included (hey not everyone can have the Wright Bros. first plane, etc), but the presentation is absolutely first rate. You have to do the best with what you have and I can certainly say they do. Very well done.

This is a great way to learn about the history of Wyoming. It is a self guided tour but there are many signs along the way explaining what you are seeing. We got there with only an hour until closing but still enjoyed seeing the museum. There is also a small gift shop with Wyoming goods for sale.

The museum was opent but the gift shop was closed. I was very disappointed but told the gift shop was closed on Sunday for budget cuts. The museum was busy so surely the museum would have made some money. Makes no sense for it to be closed when the museum is open.

My son and I like to stop in here every six months or so. The staff are very friendly and the museum is kept up very nice. Being from the area I am always amazed at what I learn…as my son gets older he take notice of different things each time we are in. Very worth the stop!

Surprisingly diverse history museum. Dinosaurs, mining displays, western displays, military displays plus art displays and traveling displays. It's completely free and fascinating. There are displays for kids and displays that would only be interesting to adults. The gift shop is very nice and has the best assortment of western history books in town.

The building is a little forbidding, but once inside the natives are friendly and the exhibits excellent -- plus, admission is free! There's a dinosaur, and lots of old guns, and Indian artifacts, and stuffed animals, plus the mineral in Kitty Litter...you name it.

A two story museum providing the history of Wyoming. Took us under two hours to meander our way through the various displays.

I'm glad we took the time to visit here to learn about the history of Wyoming from prehistoric to present. I was surprised to read about the first state to allow women to vote as well as having the first female governor. Also the history of the coal, gold and uranium mines. The museum also has many Indian exhibits. This is a great place to visit, however, they did not open right at 9:00 as was posted.

Visited with my wife on a school day. Lots of school children playing hide and seek, but this didn't detract from learning about Wyoming history. Well worth a visit, and free entry too!

The curators did a good job with the displays. However, I sometimes got lost trying to determine which direction I should be going. There didn't seem to be a natural flow. Other than that, I found the museum informative and interesting. Lists of good historical and current information about Wyoming.

Very interesting museum, I like the way it is organized by category-fossils, gems, oil boom, wild west etc. Very clean, very informative. Well worth a few hours going through the exhibits, Kid friendly!

This museum is a must-see in Cheyenne. Lots of Wyoming history. And the museum is totally free.
The volunteer at the information desk was very helpful and friendly.
On the Saturday that we went, the gift shop was closed--supposedly due to budget cuts. This makes no sense--the gift shop would generate revenue for the museum. Government at work...

My husband and I went to the museum while taking the trolley tour of Cheyenne. When we entered, we were greeted by a volunteer who told us how the museum was laid out and what he thought was the best way to tour it. We were grateful for the information as his advice proved to be correct. We really enjoyed the Native American exhibit. Everything was explained and easy to follow. They also had a dinosaur exhibit and a Wyoming national park exhibit which were very interesting.

This museum is a must-see while in Cheyenne! It is excellent in quality and very well done. It is informative and taught both of us so much about so many topics/areas of history. I am not a history person like my husband and I still found it excellent and it kept my interest thoughout our visit - and that isn't always easy when it comes to museums. We were also very impressed that it was free and that they maintain such a high quality of museum. Great job Wyoming! Great job Cheyenne! We Wisconsinites were impressed!

Stopped by here after doing the 2 mile self guided walking tour in the morning. This is a very nice museum with lots of historical displays about Cheyenne, Wyoming, and the National Parks and Parks Service in the state. It is on two floors and can take about 2-3 hours to walk through. Very informative.

My husband and I enjoyed our visit to the Wyoming State Museum. The museum has historic exhibits (dinosaurs, fossils, etc.), old west exhibits, mining exhibits, Indian artifacts (clothing, bows, arrows, etc.) and more. They are open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 to 4:30 but close on state and federal holidays. The museum is large, easy to locate and is less than a block from the state building. It took us about 90 minutes to see everything and the museum is free. There is also a museum store.

First of all, admission to the museum is FREE, so you won't waste any money going in, even if you don't rate it. To be honest, the place is a little amateurish compared to other state museums, like History Colorado Centre in Denver, in that there is no coordinated, chronological story to follow. However, it does have a host of diverse and very interesting exhibits which are well labelled, and overall it gives a good flavour of the development of Wyoming and the industries that are, or have been, located here. The staff are very welcoming. The pride in their state is great to see and we had an enjoyable hour here. It is definitely well worth a visit to get a feel for Wyoming's history.

This museum is free and has permanent and changing exhibits. There is a cool Yellowstone coach here and a mammoth bone. It has a gift shop and a hands on room for kids.

Two floors of interesting artefacts and history. The staff member welcomed us and told us where everything was and best of all it is all for free.

You need to visit the museum to find out what the title means. However, this museum does not charge a fee, but if you would like a through history of Wyoming, then this museum is a must-do for everyone. Interestingly, there is brief exhibit of Matthew Shepard. Considering how progressive Wyoming has always been---way before California--Wyoming was the state that had equal rights where men and women were equal. Sad to say that the people who murdered Matthew Shepard cast a shadow on this fine state. By the way, if you want to see the State Capitol, it is closed until 2019 for renovations, so there is floor in the museum dedicated to the capitol.

We were in Cheyenne and the state of Wyoming for the first time. The employee explained to us very kindly where and what was exhibited. We all found the exhibitions very beautiful and informative. It is also nice that it is free. We can highly recommend this to get good information about this state including history and nature.

Free museum, something you really cannot beat. There are some really cool things in there that any history buff can appreciate. My little ones 4&7 also really enjoy going here. There is a neat little kids play area, as well as some interactive pieces for them as well. Well worth a visit if you have some time to spare.

If you go through here don’t forget to stop. Free is in everyone’s budget and the lady at the desk was so nice.
Thank you ?oming!

We were staying the night in Cheyenne on the home leg of a two week road trip. We got in to town a little early and my wife suggested that we check out the Wyoming State Museum. It was time very well spent as we learned a lot about this state's interesting history.

The Wild West at its best! Stories of Bill Cody, Buffalo Bill; Wild Bill Hickok; Indian Tribes; Fossils; a huge menagerie of Wild Animals and their habitats; Guns, Clothing, 1800 Posters.... way too much to cover in a review.
This place is amazing and you truly don’t want to miss it

Probably more than you want to know about Wyoming but does a great job of covering many subjects. Exhibits are well done and easy to understand. We learned a lot and enjoyed the visit. Wyoming was the first state to allow women to vote, first women governor, and the first Jewish newspaper.

You can learn a lot about Wyoming history and culture. State has done a great job and it's always nice when an attraction is free.

I learned a lot about the history of Wyoming. Most impressive was their early support for the role of women in voting and politics. My only wish was for better lighting of the exhibits since there was lots of signage for reading.

My husband and I went and had a great time. It's geared a little more towards kids but what museum isn't? I really enjoyed learning a bit about Wyoming (being new to the area) and if you're passing through its worth a stop with the family. I've been to larger, but since Cheyenne is a small town the museum fits.

We showed up here looking for something to do while it was raining! It was a pleasant surprise! It was free! It was very informative and enjoyable. People were accommodating! Facilities were clean.

If you are looking for something to do for an hour or so, this is a really nice museum on Wyoming history. It is a little hard to find but it is worth finding. The exhibits are well done for this small museum. It is definitely worth the time. Plus it is FREE.

FREE museum located in Cheyenne, Wyoming. We The Wyoming State Museum is a state government agency established in 1895 . The museum features a vast collection of objects from past to present, including art, history and anthropology. It took us about 2 hours to tour the museum. There are a variety of different types of exhibits located on two stories of the building. The staff were very kind, and thanked us for coming. Photos are allowed amd I have attached quite a few. Parking is free. This is a must while visiting Cheyenne!

This a very enjoyable place to visit, Located in downtown and with free admission ( Donations are welcomed ) it gives you a very complete history of the state,
There are two floors filled with the best and the worst that has happened, Take your time, read and enjoy, this is a well worthwhile visit.

The museum exhibits artefacts over eons of time from dinosaurs to pioneer days and beyond. Free entry so good value and pleasant staff

This museum has it all from geology to paleontology, natural history and the old west. You will enjoy the ease of moving from one exhibit to another with things to see, touch and feel along the way.

Cheyenne, WY is a great city. The State museum is a wonderful step back in time and history. I hope you can take the time to go through it and learn about the old west!

This is a small museum, but full of good history and information. The exhibits were very good. There were not a lot of people at the museum during our visit, so we were able to take our time and read details. The museum covers history of the bison, cowboys, Indians and other western events. The Wyoming football story was extremely interesting. A good place to visit for all history buffs.

This is a good place to spend an hour and learn a bit about Wyoming's history. It's not huge, but it's got some nice, relevant exhibits. It's also easy to access and get around in.

This was a very nice and informative museum that wasn’t busy on a Saturday afternoon. We enjoyed the children’s activities and the history of Wyoming.
The lady at the front desk was very helpful and offered my husband an available wheelchair to use.
The museum is free but we there is a donation box and a very nice gift shop.
Make this a must see on your travels.

My wife and I make it a point to visit local and state history museums when we’re on our road trips. More often than not, we have been very impressed with the use of displays, artifacts, and narratives used to summarize historical persons, events, and natural features that define a state or community. Our visit to the Wyoming State Museum was no exception. On the main floor, the recollection of major events that have occurred since early settlement was very interesting. The importance of natural resources to the state’s economy, including mineral and energy sources, was noted, but could have been given more emphasis. We particularly enjoyed the second floor section devoted to Native Americans. The second floor also provided the story behind the ongoing remodeling of the state’s capital building, which was also very interesting.
All in all, a very decent, but small history museum, especially given that it does not charge admission! One note; we visited this museum on a Saturday. Unfortunately, the gift shop, which had a lot of interesting things, is closed Saturdays.

Have had many of the displays up for several years. Would be nice to!have traveling and varied exhibits.

My husband and I enjoyed the Wyoming State Museum. Parking was easy, there was no charge, and the museum staff was friendly and helpful. We had been listening to Francis Parkman's Oregon Trail before we stopped so the exhibits about the fur traders and immigrant trails were pertinent to that book. The state Capitol is closed for three years so that will have to wait for another trip.

This museum is Free! We really enjoyed learning about the 44th state, first woman governor and the first territory to write a law allowing women to vote! Plus a very thorough Indian exhibit with video of native Americans talking and showing how to make their craft. Animals of the areas, and the earliest of inhibants Dinosaurs. The interactive section for kids is well done. Learning about the Oregon Trail, we will go explore that region on our next trip to Wyoming.

Outstanding! Great for kids in the Hands On History Room.
Nice balance of displays.
Special exhibits well done.
Friendly staff willing to answer your questions.

This is a great museum for children and families. Lots of interesting history and activities for children.

We all enjoyed this museum!! 2 teenagers and 2 younger ones...well worth it! They have a near scavenger hunt that we all enjoyed!

We had very limited time to cruise through but I found myself wishing I had more time. I took some pictures of the interpretive signs to read later and just checked out the exhibits. I was disappointed to have to hurry but enjoyed what I saw. Learned a lot about Wyoming and the history of Cheyenne. Very enjoyable. The ladies who were working there were very accommodating.

We had some extra time before the rodeo and fit in a quick trip to the museum. It is free and worth seeing.

Extremely interesting museum with dinosaurs to current day items. You can easily spend a few hours there. I highly recommend it and it’s free! They do appreciate a small donation!

I have visited more extensive State History Museums (Tennessee, California). But my wife and I did spend two hours here looking at well presented thematic exhibits on different aspects of Wyoming. The exhibits were presented in a loosely thematic/chronological order and the displays were of the standard visual/caption type. There were few videos or large exhibits so not as kid friendly as some of these museums are but probably the most informative museum in this town. After visiting here consider going down to the Nelson Museum which is a good complement to this museum.

This is one of the best "free" museums I've ever visited. Interesting with lots of interactive stuff for the kids. Make sure to get the scavenger hunt forms for the kids. Our grandkids had a great time finding the items.

The museum was well organized with interesting exhibits on Wyoming. We went through it in about an hour. It is free. There is a kids room with samples of animal tracks, skulls, claws, talons that was fun to look at with the kids. As a non-Wyoming resident there were a number of things that we found to be interesting.

The cost for this museum is 0, nada, nothing. It is free admission and you will be truly impressed with the size of it. If you have time to only go to one museum then this is the place. We have paid admission to other museums with only a fraction of the exhibits that the Wyoming State Museum offers for free.

The staff was very friendly and the exhibits were great, there are multiple floor and so much to see here, would love to come back and visit again.

Love going to a State Museum if it is nearby. Great way to learn the highlights
about a state. Enjoyed!

The Wyoming State Museum was a neat place to visit. The exhibits were interesting, though it is clear that they're currently working on refreshing some of them. I appreciated that they did not just focus on the rosy parts of their history, though Wyoming does have a lot to be proud of--I'm glad I now know more about it! Definitely recommend. The museum admission is free so if you're just passing through you can stop in for a half hour or so to stretch your legs or you can spend half a day there.

I volunteer at the welcome desk so I am somewhat biased, but the State Museum is an interesting, education, and informative place with friendly staff. Displays are well done covering both history of the State as well as current activities. Special Family Day events on the first Saturday of the month and lecture series as announced. There is a "Hands On" area where children can dress up, play with various items, have pictures taken, etc. And it"s FREE!

We enjoyed walking through the museum and seeing the history of Wyoming. The museum isn't very big but worth going. We spent about an hour going through it. The volunteers were very nice.

Very nice museum. Local landscape photography section was amazing. Cowboy and cowgirl history fun. Nice historic gun collection. If you love western history, it's a must.

a lot to see,you will need to spend some time there, the staff i talked to were willing to talk about more than what was just put on the labels,,got some nice tips on other places i might want to see

We love museums and found this one to be highly accessible, well presented exhibits and generally very interesting I would visit again.

Free! Great history of the state. Mining, Indians and so many different types of animals. Fossils were amazing. Great gift shop too.

Free two-hour parking is available along both Warren and Central Avenue and in their lot. Superb 2-floor museum. Free and filled with varied and interesting exhibits from coal to mammoths to Indians to National parks. Literally something for everyone, Great for young and old. A happy place.

The newly renovated kid's area is seriously impressive. I would equate the quality to a nature and science museum experience with opportunities for kids to have meaningful, hands-on learning and fun.

We enjoyed this museum. plan 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. Cheyenne has light traffic compared to Washington DC. We found parking on the street.

Was very impressed with the exhibits and friendliness of staff.
Went back next night for halloween activities for the kids. Everyone was so friendly and gracious to us. They didn't know we were visiting from out of state. All of the folks we meet in Cheyenne were so friendly, courteous, and helpful.

The Wyoming State Museum has a lot to offer and provides a historical perspective of the immediate area and the state of Wyoming. The museum was a pleasant experience. Enjoy.

My wife and I were in town - this was a good use of time to get a little local history and involvement of people from Wyoming
There was also an art exhibit that displayed some very nice pieces
Very glad we spent time there today

Small but chock full of really great information and well put-together displays. Give yourself time to read and listen to all the displays and information. Very pleasant museum.

The Wyoming State Museum details the history of the state with lots of interesting information on the western migration of the United States. You will enjoy it.

Took my nephews here to check out the museum. They do an excellent job if informing about Wyoming and the mant people who have helped to create the state to what it is today. The scavenger hunt makes it more interactive for children.

Stopped off to see some sights in town. Saw this had favorable reviews. It was free, and the staff appeared thrilled we were there to check it out. Inside the museum was a wide range of interesting items from all ages of the areas history. Very interesting. Parking was free out front. Great stop

Loved this local state museum. Learned new facts about the state of Wyoming. Clean and modern museum. Donations accepted.

This was a nice museum with many artifacts about the history of Wyoming. It is a free museum which is nice for families. I highly recommend.

Not bad for Cheyenne, Show what life was like in the good old days here. My family donated a lot of items from the Cowboy era to this museum. You can learn a lot from here and see what is real in movies and what is made-up

Went with the family and pretty much we were the only ones there on a Friday afternoon. Again best part, it's free. So much history. Definitely for all ages. Well done Cheyenne. Well done.

There is more in this museum than one can get out of any travel brochure or the internet. Definitely worth a visit.

On my last day visiting with my son and his family in Cheyenne, I decided to take my 2 year old grandson to this museum. I absolutely loved this place! I found the exhibits interesting and engaging and all the kid friendly, hands on activities kept my grandson entertained. This should definitely be on your agenda while visiting Cheyenne. You can't beat the price as it free.

This is a fantastic museum which has much to appeal to all generations. Well laid our and well explained it gives a great insight in to the development of Wyoming. Our boys (aged 8 and 12 years old) particularly enjoyed the scavenger hunt which captured their attention for over 90 minutes and challenged them to read the exhibits.
Free entry. We found free 2 hours parking on the street outside. The museum has a small gift shop.
Would recommend a 90minutes visit for any one interested in exploring the history of the great state of Wyoming.

This Museum is not big compared to others we have visited, but it presents a fairly good idea of the local history, and it's well presented. The staff where friendly, and pleased to see all visitors.

Very complete, larger than you’d expect, we enjoyed the museum. The only critique is that it’s seemingly not in any kind of order. Still worth the visit.

This museum is just the right size for getting an overview of what the state has to offer. An hour or so will get you to each corner. This is a kid friendly place and everyone in our group learned something new. Also there is no charge for admission - donations accepted.

Great place to take families and very clean & interesting. Have a children's interactive area which makes it fun for the whole family.

Something for both the kids and the adults. It was informative, but also had some really interesting pieces in their collection. We spent about an hour visiting. It was free which was also nice.

This is one of the nicest museums I've visited across the country. And it's free! Lots of great exhibits.

interesting museum, many different types of displays, near the capitol, lots of parking nearby. Free

This was one of the better done museums I have visited...ir was so informative and the displays some of the best I have seen

this museum offers a great trip through the history of Wyoming. Each of the three floors is very well organized and offers a great variety of ways to educate us. There are interactive places for the kids, videos, as well as displays that come for a short time and then move on. Anyone who comes to visit me always is treated to a trip to this museum.

We enjoyed our visit to the Wyoming State Museum. The staff was friendly and the exhibits a great way to learn about the local history as a starting point for our stay in Wyoming.

Just one block southeast of Wyoming Capitol, this free museum will take about two hours to view comfortably. Good coverage of the history of Wyoming before and after statehood. (Coverage of native American experience in what is now Wyoming is extensive.) Children's hands-on nature room is amazing. (A child could easily spend one hour in that room alone.) One complaint is no dates on identification tags for display items. Small gift shop with great variety. Wyoming State Archives share building. Free (limited) parking on Central Avenue.

Has a lot of the Old West stuff when Wyoming was first becoming settled with Forts and the Cavalry vs Native American battles. Also has a lot of prehistoric fossils and bones found in Wyoming and animals that used to live here that are now extinct.

Glad we ran through this free museum. They have priceless items. I especially liked the western miniatures.I also liked the Indian exhibit.

Nice museum. Doesn't take long to go through and it's free. It has a kids' play section and things kids can touch at many of the exhibits. I really liked the dinosaur fossil section.

This museum does a good job at describing Wyoming...it's history, geology, natural resources, National Parks, people, and more. We spent a couple of hours touring and felt like we came away with a better appreciation of Wyoming. Also nice that it was free.

I love museums, even small museums, if they have a coherent theme, and the interpretation is compelling. I dont love this museum.

Pretty small by museum standards, but learned a lot that I wasn't aware of. Lots of mining in the area.

This is a great place to learn about Wyoming's history and geography. Who would have guessed this state is the number one coal mining state of the US? Or the first state to elect a woman governor was Wyoming. The displays were attractive and informative. And best of all, it's free! So take time to investigate the State Museum.

This museum was less than I expected, given the history of Wyoming. There are better museums in Wyoming to visit. It does have a nice area for kids to explore. It has easy access for handicapped and parking is nearby..

It's beautiful to learn from the prehistoric history of the State of Wyoming. There are dinosaur fossils is an out-of-this-world experience for those who keep that child inside. It's a great experience. I didn't know, but Wyoming is a state with a lot of natural resources, especially the baking soda that we usually buy comes from over there.

Such a nice stop to our trip. The museum was fun, informative, and most of all interesting to our 10 and 8 yr old.

Not so large as to be overwhelming, but with enough variety of displays to be interesting. The staff are very pleasant and are
knowledgeable about the museum

We enjoyed this museum. It's laid out well and the exhibits are labeled well. It covers all the historical aspects of the state from the early beginning and includes industries, military persons and early peoples. It's all good. They have a newly restored coach that would take visitors around Yellowstone in the early days. They have some terrific fossil exhibits. Upstairs right now, is an exhibits on the national park sites in the state and partial contents of items sent from France after WWII as a thank you from the French people. It's called the Merci Train. It's very special. Every state receive a boxcar full of gifts. Also now is a presentation of the refurbishment if the state Capitol. It has been closed since 2015 and will not open until 2019. There is a great film about the original building and the current restoring.

We visited the State Museum while we were waiting for I-80 to open. It was interesting to our young son. He loved hearing about water bottles made out of bison bladders and looking at all the old artifacts. Its a good place to stop if you have time in town.

This museum was well worth the stop. Provided a great deal of history with plenty of exhibits. It’s not an overly large museum but it didn’t have to be. Great place to bring children. There is a nice little gift shop at the end . The museum did not cost anything g bug they except donations.

We enjoyed the exhibits and learning experience. Two floors of great exhibits and a nice gift shop. Loved learning more about Wyoming!

This museum focusses on the land and people of Wyoming, starting with the dinosaurs. As one winds through the flow of exhibits, one is presented with a good overview of the nature and peoples during the state's history.

check out the old books in the archives room. The museum overall is worth the time. You can see fossils and human history in this museum

I have lived in Wyoming my whole life, yet never once set foot in this museum. I cannot believe what wonderful exhibits I had been missing.
This is a FREE, two story (don't worry, there is an elevator) museum which does and exceedingly complete job of covering all that makes up Wyoming. From the old west settlers to plains indians, all the way to modern education and technology in various fields. There are children's exhibits, scavenger hunts, play areas, and activities to keep most ages interested.
If you are a Wyoming buff, walking through each section is like traveling to each individual part of the state. Those who grew up here remember learning the stories of Nate Champion, the Johnson County Cattle Wars, Tom Horn, Hugh Glass, and a thousand other legends of the early American west. And all of those are are represented in some way shape or form.
If you are traveling through, be sure to stop in and see what makes up our beautiful state. If you are a resident, stop in and remember why the whole world looks at Wyoming with a childlike innocence.
As they say, "Like no place on Earth"

What a great museum, the atmosphere is inspiring and informative! A must see if visiting Cheyenne and a wonderful place for children!

Friendly welcome at the reception desk, then on into a very interesting museum. We felt we learned a lot from their very well laid out and informative displays. Stories of the mining disasters were very moving. All this for free too - recommended.

Unless you are in absolute hurry, a 1-2 hours you can spare to visit this Free museum will be definitely well spent.
The 4% extra room tax the State of Wyoming levied on all hotel stays some of it probably ended up here to support this fine museum.
It is 2 floors of wonderful displays, history, artifacts of past and present. You can get really immersed and 2 hours will go by before you know it.

Nice place to visit. I would recommend. Peaceful and relaxing. We rushed through the end as we only allowed 1.5 hrs and got there just before closing. Could have used another 30 minutes.

Took my four little ones here (7-6months) and they loved it. The kids room is fantastic! They severs levels of exhibits with everything from dinosaurs to modern creations. So much fun!

This museum is well worth your time! The multitude of subjects exhibited pertinent to Wyoming history was excellent, and all displayed with equal care and respect. There’s something for the whole family to enjoy and learn about, and the best thing is it’s FREE! Thank you, citizens of Wyoming!

This was a nice State museum. They had a lot of interesting things in there, stuffed animals, clothing of the cowboys, Indian artifacts, horse and buggies, things like that.

Maybe if you're passing through Cheyenne it wouldn't occur to you to enter a museum, but this one is absolutely worth it.
Small, but very interesting and communicative... run by enthusiastic and very friendly volunteers.
It allows you to quickly and pleasantly learn about the history of the state of Wyoming, the natives and the settlers, seeing many objects, settings and quick and effective explanations. Advised!

Cute little museum that is free to visit. Focuses on Wyoming's history and nature through various exhibits on its two floors. Can be done in roughly an hour. Very warm welcome by staff, who seem to be enjoying their jobs.

Near the state capital, this museum has a lot of history for Wyoming. A gift shop is also on premises and worth a look.

As a life-long resident of Wyoming, I toured the State Museum for the first time this Fall. The history was intriguing and the displays were very informative. Even though I am from the state, I would recommend a visit for anyone in the Cheyenne area. The Museum offers a great glimpse into Western Civilization and the true culture that has formed Wyoming.

Well worth a visit, donation based entry. Very informative & great exhibits. Some interactive sections for kids & good examples of wild life & predators. Will certainly visit again.

There is so much to see here! First, there is no charge to get in! There is a fun hands-on room for kids. It includes dress up old west clothing, and some fun interactive toys. My kids love going to the museum. They have great exhibits.

What a nice way to spend an hour or two if you are in town. The museum was quaint and clean. Each exhibit had an explanation that would be easy to understand for anyone. Make sure to go upstairs to see the Native American portion of the exhibit. It was worth it.

Really enjoyed this museum. Cheyenne really has a lot of museums so we decided to pick just one and were pleased with our choice. Covers the whole state and it is free.

My husband and I visited the Wyoming State Museum on our way to Montana and thoroughly enjoyed it.
There are really great exhibits highlighting Wyoming's many industries and of course, their history. The exhibits are logically laid out and easy to follow the history of the state. There are exhibits of the Native American people that are very well done.
It is a fairly large museum so plan on spending a minimum of an hour or two walking around. We highly recommend this museum for anyone visiting the area.

The staff here are lovely and it is free to get in. Some nice displays on Wyoming including the parks and Native Americans

A great place to start in order to get a sense of Wyoming history.
The museum segments its displays but they are full and comprehensive.
It was clean and all the interactive displays worked.
A small town, more trusting vibe was evident for example, in the child's area there were plenty of loose items, that in mega city museums just wouldn't be available.
I spent ~ 2hrs there and left with a better appreciation of Wyoming's industries, government, geology and personality.
It's free, staff was friendly/informative, and the location (caddy corner to the state capitol) was not congested and was safe.

I have been through this museum twice now. Really informative. Lots of stuff for all ages. I love the hidden images you have to find for a prize!

Small, easily browsed museum. Interesting Native American displays, helpful staff. Most interesting feature was a pair of Tom Horn's shoes.

We had been visiting Cheyenne earlier in the week and missed the closing at 5:00pm - came back through and spent about 2 hours here. The museum is by donation with exhibits equal to any larger city ever visited. Loved learning more about the State of Wyoming. Great displays for Native Americans clothing, artifacts, etc. Dinos and Wyoming early days. - great for all ages. Well Done!

This museum was excellent and well worth your visit. It’s also free. They had some really good exhibits that we enjoyed. Parking is free also.
I wish they had more on the various native American tribes & told more of their story. I would have also liked to see an exhibit on cowboys. There was also nothing on the internment camps of Japanese during WW2 as at least one was in WY. This is an important part of American history, shameful as it was, but it needs to be told.
The Girls Scouts owned a camp in Wyoming for over 21 years called National Center West where Girl Scouts from all over the world & the US came. I was one of the lucky ones to have been chosen to go there. I represented my state at my event. Hundreds of girls came through there & it’s such a part of WY history. Coming here affected me for the rest of my life. Can you please include this as part of your museum?

This is a great state museum that gives a good overview of the history of Wyoming and shows the natural resources that exist in the state. Not a large museum but just the right size and it's free! It's a must visit if you are in Cheyenne!

We really enjoyed this museum - wouldn't describe it as small as other reviewers. A thorough look at the exhibits is going to take a couple of hours. The museum has displays covering the area before Wyoming statehood all the way through present day. Better signage would help guide visitors through the middle area of the museum as the exhibits are best viewed in chronological sequence. The upstairs area is somewhat redundant, though there are some strong individual pieces on display there.

Best museum in town. I've been to five so far and this is my favorite. Would be good with kids. I'll be back

Went on a Friday afternoon. Barely anyone here. Well done. Plenty to see and the best part is it's free. Our little one really enjoyed the exhibit that had several hands on activities. Will return.

This museum clearly has someone that sets up the exhibits in a way that helps the visitors understand and interpret them. When we were there, there was a woman, Irina, that was working in the souvenir shop that was so knowledgeable about the museum and the gifts.

We visit this museum wherever we visit Cheyenne as the kids love it. It is very interactive and informative about the state and its history. Great staff and a fun gift shop.

Great place to visit, some very interesting displays, lots to learn about Cheyenne and Wyoming. We spent a few hours here as there was so much information.

Had some time to kill in Cheyenne and decided to visit the State Museum. Well worth the time. A lot to see and amazing amount of history. I was impressed with the variety of exhibits.

Having never been to Wyoming, this was a very informative and interactive visit. I learned about the different wildlife in Wyoming, the Indians, pioneers and national parks. It was definitely worth the time.

The Wyoming State Museum is not widely advertised. It is a well curated, extensive collection and an enjoyable atmosphere. It's worth a visit or even ten.

This museum is small but rich in resources for Wyoming history. They have a great kids section with dress up clothes (think old west), puzzles, an old soldier fort remade, and an arch (St. Louis) to construct. They have information on dinosaur activity in this area, coal history, native American resources, and other local history and artifacts. Kids enjoy this museum as it gives just the right amount of interaction, not too long or involved, and keeps them interested. Good resource for a small state!

I was hoping to really find a hidden gem, but myself and my children ranging from ages 3 - 16 were bored to tears. It took us less then an hour to go through. It was a disappointment.

I spent a good 2.5 hours here looking at all the different exhibits - lots of neat interactive exhibits early on, and lots of interesting information on regional dinosaurs, the building of the State Capitol building, Native Americans, and more... highly recommended, especially for FREE!!

Our family stopped by on a Monday morning on our last day of vacation in the Rocky Mountain National Park area. Very well done museum. Exhibits laid out for nicely. Learned quite a bit about Wyoming history. If you are in the area make sure to stop by.

You can't beat the price- it's free. It's also a very user-friendly museum. The exhibits are well-thought out and I learned a lot about the state. Some of the exhibits could use a bit of modernizing, but don't let that stop you from going and learning about sheep wagons, Western furniture, and more.

This is perfect for people that want to learn about Wyoming's history using pictures, natural history, and artifacts. This museum has videos and pictures, and many many artifacts.
Best of all they have qualified Rangers like Evan to give you a quick synopsis of the whole picture of Wyoming's history. And it's ALL FREE

We had a couple of hours to spend before heading to the airport and chose to visit here. We were happy with this choice - the staff were all very polite and helpful. We spent a couple of relaxed hours in the museum learning about the history of Wyoming - from a whole variety of aspects. The trip is well worth it if you want to know a bit more about this State.

I always visit this Museum when in Wyoming but it is starting to get a bit old and no new exhibits are ever added. If you have never been it is worth a visit but don't bother repeating as the only thing that changes are the seasons.

A rather simple and small museum covering the history and environment of Wyoming. Comes across as rather dated in its presentation. Worth a short visit if you are in Cheyenne.

We learned so much about the history of Cheyenne. This was an excellent museum. There was so much see. A must to visit!

Visited this free museum across from the state house. Great museum with artifacts, movie clips, and written history. For instance, First state that allowed women to vote, back in 1800's.

Free museum next to the capital building. Prior to starting our self guide tour of the capital; the visitor center staff member also recommend us coming here for a visit when we were done. Well, worth the stop to learn more regarding the history of the area. This was free when we went.

The Wyoming museum is really interesting and informative. It has paleo exhibits as well as a restored stage coach which used to take tourists around Yellowstone back in the day. There also is interesting info on mining and pioneer history as well as good exhibits on Native Americans upstairs. It is worth a visit for sure!

The museum is very large, we were surprised and best of all it was free. Donations welcome. Two floors with heaps of exhibits and videos.
Staff very friendly and there is a gift shop.
Well worth a visit if in Cheyenne.

We took two 8 year olds and they loved it, but we loved it too! It’s a place with all kinds of stuff so no matter what your interest is... there’s something for you. The kids interactive area was a big hit and it’s superbly done. I say go to this one!

Everyone should stop here while in the area. Great exhibits for young and old alike! The museum store is a first rate shop, offering excellent gifts and souvenirs.

We didn't have enough time to experience all the exhibits when we visited, but what we were able to go through was very well done.

Took grandson and family and spent a couple of hours in this museum. Eight year old grandson loved it with lots of questions!!
Learned lots about his interests for future reference.

Was very pleased with this museum. Very educational, easy reading and artifacts old and newer. Recommend visiting if you are in the area.
I didn’t have time but you can pick up the boot walk from here too.

Free admission with a good interaction for the kids. Well maintained with a lot information and things to see

If you're in Cheyenne, stop by this museum. It's free, but they do accept donations at the front desk. (drop something in there!) The displays are very interesting and cover a lot of different subjects, all Wyoming related. There's a hands-on area for kids with fun stuff for them. Been twice and will go again next time in town. Hopefully the remodeled area will be done then.

This was a very interesting museum. It was not expansive, it did not have a lot of expensive antiquities, but it was a treasure-trove of Wyoming state history from oil & gas to dinosaurs, and a very thorough native american display that alone could take nearly 2 hours to read all the material presented.

Our family truly enjoyed this museum. They have a "scavenger hunt" for children to help them track the history of Wyoming. Lots of beautiful displays, a play area for kids and a cool gift shop. We collect "smashed pennies" and they have several to choose from. There is a cool cowboy boot at the entrance which makes a great family photo op. The museum is free but you are encouraged to make a donation. Great way to get the history of Wyoming.

this museum is free. loads of different exhibits but if you are looking for the old west there are better museums in Cheyenne, but if you like natural history then this one will suit.

The Wyoming State Museum is a great way to learn about the history of Wyoming. Free admission (donations accepted) and parking on the street (free for 2 hours), this museum is attached to the Wyoming State Archives. There are numerous displays of firearms, fossil bones, clothing, and wagons. There is something for everyone here. They also have a gift shop attached.

We made a spontaneous visit to
the museum during a summer storm and were really pleased to have made the effort. The museum staff were very welcoming. We only had an hour to spend there although could have stayed longer. Great variety of information about the history of Wyoming right up to the present. There are many museums to visit in Cheyenne and I would definitely recommend adding this one to your list of things to do.

We were on the fence about going to this museum. On the one hand, it has great reviews and it's always good to learn about a place you're visiting. On the other we had a full day of snowy late April driving ahead of us and we were expecting some outdated or tired exhibits (learning the hard way). Surprise! We loved the Wyoming landscape and had seen a little of Cheyenne, but we learned a ton of new and interesting information about Wyoming (especially that it was first to grant women suffrage, a full 60 years before the national amendment!) - and it wasn't learning the hard way. There was a natural history section, a chronology of state history until the present day, a Native American chronology and history section, a national parks section, plus archaeology, anthropology, modern art, and a ton of state pride. It made us vow to come back - not only to the museum, but to spend more time enjoying this beautiful and fascinating state.

Very interesting and fun for all
Very much fun for children that have a liking for science and history of western ways. We enjoyed this visit very much.

If you are visiting Cheyenne, I would highly recommend a visit to the Wyoming State Museum. Great place for children also. And if you are a history buff, you will truly enjoy.,

We visited this museum after walking from the Historic Plains Hotel and doing a bit of a downtown walking tour one morning. We arrived right at 9am when it opened, and we could stay only until about 10am (1 hour). We easily could have spent 90 minutes or two hours. I thought the exhibits were very well done, and the kids enjoyed it as well. Particularly with free admission, this is a great place to spend time with kids when visiting Cheyenne.

First, Wyoming has no budget for exhibit acquisitions. That said, the museum offers a great array of historic pieces that have all been donated by caring citizens. There is a T-rex, as well as other animal displays that are all quite interactive. The Statehood era displays are impressive and the entire museum is free, although donations are accepted and encouraged. There are frequent family and children's activities taking place as well. The staff is friendly and informative. This is a must see for anyone that visits Cheyenne. They also have a wonderful souvenir shop downstairs.

Settled for state museum because Capitol building is closed for renovations. The museum has a small display of the Capitol but doesn't do it justice. There are only 2 floors and not a whole lot to see. Free admission.

We sometimes have trouble engaging my boyfriend's kids, but I really wanted to do something in Cheyenne on this trip so we went anyway.
The museum is free (yay!) and the greeter was sweet and knowledgeable. We grabbed one of the scavenger hunts and the kids loved it. Definitely a great way to get them into being there.
Personally, the women's histoey highlights were amazing. And the corner on Indigenous women was very respectfully done.
Bonus points for dinos.

An exciting experience in the world of the Far West, really worth visiting it. Very pleasant and gentle staff, ready to help you better understand all the attractions of the museum. Nice room for kids to play with clothes and draw

Such a gem! Free admission, located on 2 floors with an elevator. Some of the first floor hands on areas need refreshing (antelope hide worn to tatters), some of the dioramas seem musty and dusty.
We felt the displays were balanced regarding cattlemen vs Natives, and the Parks Services were well represented—not just Yellowstone. The Yellowstone system was well documented though, from Teddy Roosevelt to the present.
Well worth the time.

This museum is excellent.
it is well worth your time and visit
they have a display about the rodeos as well as old carriages from the early 1800s.
The people are very friendly and they also have a very nice gift shop.

Displays are easy to move through and their gift shop has a wide variety of souvenirs from very inexpensive to higher end gems, books, etc.

Spent about an hour here trying to get to know Cheyenne better. This was amazing! I can’t think of a better way to do it. The buffalo, stagecoach exhibit, Indian and cowboy exhibits were fabulous! Best part is that it was free. Don’t miss this!!

Waiting for repairs, stopped in, learned it was free and very mellow and relaxing...learn at own pace. It was great to explore and see about history and culture.
The boot art out front was great to see and learn about.
We geo cached around the museum as well
Thank you!

Liked the exhibition. If you're in the area you should take your time and stop by. The admission is free.

My husband and I were in town for Cheyenne Frontier Days and were walking around the downtown area and looking at the cool large boots. One of them was in front of the museum, so we decided to stop in. This is a very well organized museum with a large number of interesting exhibits from wildlife to dinosaurs to art made from coal to Native American beaded work. There is not a lot of any one thing but a wonderful variety of quality exhibits. We were planning to just do a quick "walk through" and ended up staying for over an hour. I was very impressed by this museum and would definitely recommend visiting!

A relatively small museum that does an adequate job telling the story of Wyoming. Geared more toward school age children, there is no charge for admission but a donation box is available. Again, best for school kids and out of staters.

Visited here, but certainly didn't spend enough time to do it justice. A wonderful museum offering Wyoming's rich history. The dinosaur exhibit is pretty cool. Take your time and enjoy some cool history in a quaint setting.

A bit of a mish-mash, lots of small pieces of irrelevance. Could be currated better. Sheep herder wagon, Native American pieces, mineral/mining information all interesting. I'm sure there could be far more information about the history of ranching, settlers, Native Americans.

I really enjoyed my visit to the state museum. It had been years since I had been there. The exhibits were great, educational and there were interactive things for kids of all ages to do.
I plan on taking my grandkids to visit.

We are from the UK and really enjoyed this relatively small museum . The exhibits were well laid out with concise and informative explanations. Helpful staff .

All reviews have been straight correct on this wonderful museum. Kids had a great time and they enjoyed all the activities which have been created to be both fun and educational. Stepped across the hall to the state archives and was able to get a copy of my grandparent's marriage license with help from great staff there that day. Enjoy!

I had a great time. The staff was friendly.
The museum featured a variety of collections: wildlife, dinosaurs, mineral/mining, military, American Indian. The placards were clear and informative.

This museum is a great presentation of the history of Wyoming. The collection ranges includes dinosaur bones, multiple wagons, and numerous artifacts from the settling of Wyoming. The second floor has a large collection of Native American artifacts including beautiful bead work.

We are snowbirds and spend the summers in Fort Collins. We have devoted one day to visiting Cheyenne for the last several years, and this year was a visit to the museum and the capitol building. We highly recommend both. We spent about two hours in the museum which had exhibits that were interesting and easy to read descriptions of all the displays. Being originally from the east coast, we always enjoy learning about "the west" and all it has to offer. Free parking on the streets was plentiful and the museum was free. We highly recommend it.

I love this Museum, it takes me back to when I grew up in Denver.
➊ FREE ADMISSION !!! That's huge.
➋ Every museum I've been to the last several years is been some sort of indoctrination chamber for political change. I'm sick of it! This is the only museum I've donated money to in years. I love this museum.
➌ Here in Wyoming this museum still exhibits weapons. That means the guns used to shape this country.
Go here! Go here while you still can, it's important.

It has a little something for everyone! The children's section is great cause it's all hands-on!! There are other sections which are also hands -on. It is a great small museum.

This attraction is located a block away from the Capitol Building. Entrance here is FREE!
It has 2 floors of exhibits that include its local animals, precious metals ( jade, gold, uranium) , history of the Capitol Building, mining and miners, state parks, Indian clothing, indian reservations, etc.
Both the staff manning the Entrance of the museum as well as that working at the Gift Shop were very helpful and kind.
Tip: There Is a small elevator for those not wanting to use the stairs to go to the second floor. It is located near the restroom. Enjoy your visit, I did!

This free museum is within walking distance of the Capitol building. It has two levels and gives you a lot of information about Wyoming from flora and fauna, industry, dinosaurs, railroad, Native Americans, National Parks and more. Unfortunately the hands-on area was not open and no water fountains were available due to Covid. There is a nice, small gift shop and a sitting area. Nice overview of the state.

Of course kids might get a little bored of you stay too long but the stuff they have curated is incredible. It’s full of artifacts of all types and tells a wonderful story of how the West came to be from every area of life. Very impressive and best of all its FREE

I highly recommend this museum for anyone and everyone! 2 levels of great info and pictures! Friendly staff and great photo ops! Can't wait to go back!!

This fee museum does a great job of telling the story of the state of Wyoming. The exhibits are easy to read & the physical set up of the museum makes coming here an enjoyable experience. I highly recommend coming here.

An excellent collection of objects that tells the story of Wyoming beyond that of the frontier town. Very interesting and informative.

Free museum for visit to Cheyenne. Lots of information about the state with displays and static exhibits. Nice souvenir shop as well. Worth a stop if you are in Cheyenne!

Really cool museum. Shows all of Wyoming history. Very informative. The dinosaur exhibit was awesome. Learned a lot about the mining industry here too.
A fun place to take the whole family. Lots to see and interact with.

Not going to lie, I wasn't expecting much, but I was proved more than wrong. This is an excellent museum that covers just about everything you could ever learn about Wyoming, right from ancient times through to the modern day. Naturally there are sections on frontier life and national parks, but there are equally extensive sections on the region's industrial history, their involvement in the great wars, Wyoming's role in the national history of the US, and of course Native Americans. I came away having learned so much about the state, and was never bored or disinterested at any point.
This is an excellent museum and to top it off is free to enter as well. A must-do for anyone visiting Cheyenne.

Located in the Capitol Complex area of downtown Cheyenne this free museum gives a fair account of the states history. Only becoming a state in 1890, the museum delves into its natural history to include local animals and mineral history. An exhibit explores its prehistoric past which is quite extensive. Also, different perspectives are presented from settlers to the military's role in shaping the state. The Native American culture is also honorably portrayed in a contemporary view of the state's history. The museum is very kid and family friendly. It would be perfect for school trips and family visits. A visit to the small, but has something for everyone, gift shop is a great way to cap the visit. It is a MUST see while visiting Cheyenne.

Lots of exhibits both animal and historical, Everything is well documented. Exhibits are educational and well presented. A very nice way to spend and hour and a half.

Had some spare time and came across the museum by chance. Went and impressed by the displays......worth a visit especially as it is free.

Great museum that covers the history and details of Wyoming. Also many very good native Indian displays..

The museum exhibits are excellent and the facility is very attractive. Easy to justify stopping by for a quick visit, since there is no fee.

A very interesting museum of Wyoming state history. However there was very little about the native Americans who actually made up most of the historical time.

The man that great you is very nice and knowledgeable. The museum itself is very Iinformative. There is a lot of information about the Capitol building renovation. Even as adults we had a great time here. The best part is it is free.

Took my two wild cowboys here for a few hours. So much stuff to see and they couldn't get enough. There is a section for kids that allows them to play and learn about pioneer life. Very interactive and fun. Also has a gift shop with nice gifts very reasonably priced! A must see!

Spent a snowy day exploring the Wyoming State Museum. Such an interesting place, with so much more to see and learn than we expected. The historical artifacts were amazing. After enjoying the exhibits, I recommend checking out the adjacent gift shop with lots of unique and quality souvenirs.

We spent a few hours looking through the history of Wyoming. Great exhibits giving you the opportunity to learn more about the incredible state! Such a variety of things!

This place was great. Very informative, information was succinctly presented in a manner that you could read, appreciate and learn from it. There is so much history in Wyoming - and it's all wrapped up in a nice little package in this museum. I particularly liked the National Park exhibit upstairs. If you have an extra 2 hours, spend it here. You won't be disappointed.

A must see while in Cheyenne, this museum really covers it all, from dinosaurs to current day. We learned so much about the state’s history and found the displays to be informative and helpful, really worth the time! We spent two hours here and the time zipped by! It’s free, too!

It seems they saved all the hard work for the fine Americans who were the pioneers of the state of Wyoming. You will know exactly what I mean by this when you visit, and have thoroughly immersed yourself in the exhibits, as I have done. This is an absolute gem of a museum. Its exhibits are wonderfully laid out so that all may enjoy, whether you are 2 or 102. I found the Native-American artifacts particularly interesting. Additionally, the lady at the front desk could not have been more helpful in answering my questions. I am a Canadian who resides in a large urban centre. I learned from this museum of the people who truly made America great in the first place.

After the success of our museum visits in Denver we called into this new purpose built museum. It was free entry and parts of the museum were still being completed. however there was plenty to explore and it helped us to understand the history of the area.
It is already a good visit and I am sure it will continue to improve and expand.

Lots to see and learn about. We could have spent more time there as it has lots to see. Free to enter and a nice gift shop.

Didn't have a lot of time to spend here, but was very impressed. Especially like the dinosaur exhibit.

Great museum and free showing history of the state and area. I would recommend the stop, parking was easy and people were friendly

For a small museum 2 floors they have packed in quite a lot of history here.1st floor has a bueatiful stagecoach that was used in Yellowstone before cars allowed.Fully restored to it original colors and glory.Basic histories of pioneers Native Americans ,geology, mining and so many uses. There is a volenteer at the entrance to answer questions and direct you to different areas.Free to public but they rely on public donations and much appreciated to preserve the displays.

The displays and timeline of early Wyoming life and culture are fascinating. The displays are much more than a picture on a wall, these take you through a time period that allows you to gain a perspective of what life in Wyoming was like.

Nice museum. Well put together with Old West history and very nice people. Outside the old depot you will find the famous Boots for a cool photo op.

We went to this museum and it had many Western and military displays. I was hoping it would have more Native American displays, but it was interesting. I like learning the history of the West and the visual displays help make the connections to what is written in history books.

...but I had such a blast! Lots of information here and lots of opportunities for interactive items. The Native American piece on the 2nd floor is worth the visit, alone. However, I was also quite partial to the dinosaur bones, too!

The museum has some general stuff you have seen lots of places before, and it's laid out a little strange but they have some good stuff as well. Cost is donation only which is nice. We'll worth 5 bucks to kill a couple of hours looking around.

We went on a Saturday afternoon and had a good couple of hours there looking at a wide mix of content that included dinosaurs, geology, ranching, resources, education etc. Alot of it was very interesting and it was good way of finding out more about the state. One disappointment was the shop being closed as there were some interesting looking posters that I would have liked to have bought. A bit of advice therefore is don't go on a Saturday if you want to get access to this facility.

My wife & I recently visited this beautiful museum, and I must say, we were blown away!
We are not big museum people. We prefer outdoor activities 9 times out of 10, but this may change everything.
First of all, the museum was super clean & well kept up. Secondly, the layout kept you yearning for the next display. And thirdly, the historical presentation of the early West, & Wyoming in particular, was not only fascinating, but very accurate & well researched.
In addition, the two women who worked the front desk upon entrance, were very informative, extremely pleasant to chat with, AND gave us tips on some other really cool things to do & see in the area,
We couldn’t have been happier we spent a couple of hours here ((could have spent more, or less, if not reading all the info cards).
Before leaving the building, would recommend a stop by the gift shop. They have a wide variety of merchandise ((clothing, jewelry, kids stuff, etc). The quality is very good as are the prices.

The Wyoming History Museum is located in the Capitol Complex and includes three interesting galleries describing the land and people of this state. These galleries are The Dawn to This Land Gallery, The R. I. P.: Rex in Pieces (a Tyrannosaurus Rex) Gallery, and the Barber Gallery that highlights the "Wyoming Story" and is dedicated to the citizens of Wyoming, past and present.
During our visit to the museum, we learned that Wyoming has more sites where remains of dinosaurs have been found than any other state. From exhibits about Wyoming's leadership in granting women the right to vote, we learned that in 1890, long before the 19th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution, the state passed a law giving women the right to vote. Additionally, the museum has several exhibits pertaining to Nellie Taylor Ross, an early Wyoming governor and the first woman elected governor in the United States.
The museum's exhibits are attractively presented in a spacious, multi-story exhibit hall. Near the entrance to the museum is a large gift shop that has a wide variety of books and other souvenirs related to Wyoming and its people.
We enjoyed our afternoon at the museum, left after learning lots more about Wyoming, and consider this museum to be one of the highlights of our visit to Wyoming. The museum does not charge an admission fee and has a friendly, very helpful staff. For all of these reasons, I highly recommend The Wyoming History Museum to TripAdvisor Travelers, especially to those seeking to learn more about Wyoming.

Went by here after visiting friends in Cheyenne. Front desk guy who worked there was absolutely excellent in giving us info on the state and museum. Can tell he loves his job. Also told us that there is a guy who comes in and does webcam instruction and teaching about things in museum to kids /schools across the country.
Great displays of Native Americans of Wyoming and first settlers of the state.

We had some time to kill so we decided to stop in. We spent about 45 inside but you could spend much more time if history is your thing. It’s free, clean and not busy so it’s definitely worth a trip. Parking was very easy also on a Friday afternoon.

I love this museum. I learn something new about our wonderful state every time I go. There is a great gift shop you don't want to miss!!

This is a fantastic small museum. My favorites were the models/miniatures and the silver set from the USS Wyoming. Free parking is easily available on the street.

Living in the Midwest you learn the history of the west, being here you experience it. We loved the museum. It is free with great odor mayor exhibits. Take the 20 mins to watch the cute Oregon trail video. The kids enjoyed it as it made the history fun! Great job! There is a play area for young kids and we saw several Kids dressed up and playing.

Wonderful and quirky bits of Wyoming's varied history. Really loved the section on the mining and minerals.

Friendly as soon as you walk in. I loved the room where you could listen to the wildlife of Wyoming. Being from the Midwest, it was such a great experience. s

Road trip! This museum is loaded with information and interesting displays. The front desk attendant, Mike, was friendly, helpful and informative. Free, so exceptional value!

We stopped at the Wyoming State Museum while visiting Cheyenne. The staff was fantastic and the exhibits covered everything from pre-history to modern Wyoming. Early American History of the early West was most interesting as well as some unexpected exhibits of Wyoming football, snowmobiles and wildlife.

I did not know Wyoming was so mineral rich and ideal for production of materials necessary to production of petroleum - bentonite is not common.
There is also substantial oil reserves huge coal beds and natural gas.
The museum illustrates the States progress.

For this to be a FREE museum, I think it is well done. Wyoming territory has a history that goes all the way back to the dinosaurs! People who visit will be taken through the ages and see exhibits on early peoples, the role Wyoming played in westward expansion, national parks in the state, and lots of historically significant artifacts. This museum is conveniently located across from the state capitol building (another FREE attraction).

We went with no real expectations, but the museum really grabbed our attention, and it did not disappoint. With a number of exhibits, this was a great way to learn about the culture and history of the area. We only intended to stay for a short time, but ended up staying for 90 minutes, enjoying every minute of it.

The Wyoming State Museum may be small, but it always has wonderful permanent and temporary exhibits. And it has special exhibits and activities for children and adults.

Often overlooked, yet it does an amazing job of brining the history of Wyoming to life. Don't miss this gem.

My husband & I recently drove from our home in eastern PA out to Utah. On our way back home, we spent a day in Cheyenne. We always seek out state museums to visit, in order to learn about the history and settlement of states that are new to us. This site was convenient to visit, with free parking and free admission. We enjoyed the exhibits here, which provided a nice general introduction to the state. My favorites were the interactive Hands-on Habitats Lab and the wooden folk art dioramas. We spent a bit over one hour in total here. It is not a comprehensive museum, but what they have is good. From here, it was a short drive to the Nelson Museum of the West (reviewed separately), another great Cheyenne site to tour.

We loved the State Museum. Our daughter was given a quiz book that she loved doing while walking through the museum. It's free and also has great parking facilities. Staff were friendly and very helpful. A must while visiting Cheyenne.

Every time we visit this museum, we see and learn something new. There are plenty of interactive displays that bring history to life for kids and adults.

Visited to have something to do while in Cheyenne. Was able to park our small RV in lot. No fee to enter. Relatively small museum.
Definitely some interesting collections and exhibits within. A lot of first floor devoted to kids activities.
Spent about 2 hours here, which was enough to see every exhibit and curation. Would be a good rainy day visit .

Cheyenne downtown is an easily walk able city. The museum is one street over from Capitol Ave ( the main road).

Nice exhibit of the history of Wyoming. The museum exhibits had informative and interesting facts. The museum seems to need more space and perhaps some updating. It’s free so perhaps there are funding concerns. Overall a great experience to learn about Wyoming.

Been there a few times, lots to look at and many things to read about. the movie they show on the west is great, I actually laughed. Something you should do at lest once.

This is a beautiful place to walk into! It is all set up in a way that was easy to follow and understand. The history of the west here is outstanding!

Spent a couple hours here with my wife and boys (pre-teens); we enjoyed it and learned a lot. IT"S FREE. Lot of cool history, things for the kids to touch, couple video, some great native american artifacts, easy parking...

The moment we approach the building I am afraid: it looks brand new and this worries me: I remember how the wonderful old Historical Museum in Denver, CO turned out into a new monster of political correctness and bureaucracy. However, my fears are not justified: this turns out to be a historical place with not a trace of politics or political correctness. It's not one of those modern monster museums where every area surrounds you with 3-4 screens and that many audio recordings competing with each other. What these guys lack in actual historical artifacts, they make up for with photographs and stories. Several areas of interest, including a section on the Wyoming Capitol, an architectural marvel currently closed for the next three years for extensive renovation works. Until the end of Sep there is also a copy of the first edition of Shakespeare's plays, a rare treat!
Oh, and did I tell you it was FREE?!

Spent half a day in Cheyenne with the family. The rating is what drew my attention. It was a great place to spend an hour or so. My kids 10 & 7 were entertained and I liked the history. It's not the biggest museum I've been to but it was well put together. I enjoyed my downtown experience and would recommend the museum.

Very impressive exhibits. Interesting and informative. Very nice displays. There was even a guide to tell of the history of sheep in the state.

A wonderful way to while away a couple of hours. You can follow your interests; rocks, dinosaurs, history. Free admission and free parking.

My family really enjoyed learning more about the history, people, and wildlife of Wyoming. We were impressed by the quality of the displays. We only had an hour to spend but could have stayed much longer.

This is a nice little state museum. It is laid out kind of randomly so it is difficult to grasp a timeline of Wyoming, but it makes up for it in the artifacts it has. We learned a lot about the state just by looking at the stuff. The gift shop has lots of cool things for kids and adults alike. No admission fee, freewill donations accepted. Since the state capitol is closed for repairs for the next three years, stop by the state museum for a visit instead.

Wonderful place to go to kill some time or just get out and get some exercise. Great place to take the kids, they have a very fun room dedicated to kids. Admission is free, you just can't beat this place. Each month there's another mystery to solve and able to find things you missed on previous visits. Great place!

A nice place to visit and learn about the history of Wyoming. Very good informative scenarios and great exhibits. A great place to spend a couple of hours.

This museum entertained us for over 2 hours. And it's free! Lots of free parking around too. Easy parking for our 24 foot RV. Expecially enjoyed the Kids Room, which had interactive items that I really enjoyed, especially picking up a skunk pelt!

One of the best laid out and informative museums we have been to. Absolutely loved it. Wide range of exhibits. Free, but donations requested.

The Wyoming State Museum delivers a great experience when you consider that admission is completely free, though they'll gladly accept donations. As a result, I take my 4 year old there periodically on bad weather days. It's not overly large, but the exhibits to a good job of telling our state's story. There's a kids area with plenty of hands-on stuff that will interest the under 10 set. Upstairs, there's a rotating exhibit that changes periodically. The volunteer in the front is always friendly. Don't plan to spend more than a couple of hours, but it's well worth a stop if you're visiting Cheyenne.

Great Museum, Great History On Wyoming, No Fee To Enter
A really nice museum in downtown Cheyenne with easy access to parking. A tremendous amount of history on the area and the State of Wyoming. Takes about 2 hours to sell the entire museum. I would recommend this as a place to visit if you enjoy history.

So much great info and fabulous exhibits, we ended up going twice. Easy to get to and find parking; spacious and well lit.

We just returned from an awesome family vacation in and around Wyoming.
We started with an overnight in Cheyenne. We did look around a bit before bed, and also saved a couple hours for exploring before we left.
I wanted to check out the state Capitol, and we saw it, but with the $300M in renovations underway, you cannot get in. We did see the Supreme Court, and then, as we walked, we saw the Wyoming State Museum, so we went in.
We learned a lot about the state, including:
- More on its being the first place in the world where women earned the right to vote - awesome!
- How they built the Capitol
- Insights into Native Americans and some awesome, modern, Native American art
- Introductions to the state's awesome National Parks
- What it was like to be a pioneer
- The state's dinosaurs
- A stuffed bison at the entrance
- An awesome cowboy / cowgirl boot outside the front door
The docent and gift shop lady were both friendly and helpful.
We picked up some postcards, and a compass and magnifying lens for our daughter and some kitchen spices for our son - he used them to help make dinner on the trip, and they made for awesome dinners!
We definitely recommend a visit!
Wyoming - like no place on earth!
Thank you, museum staff, for a welcomed visit!

Absolutely a must see when in Cheyenne. We throughly enjoyed the museum. So many artifacts, and great information about the Frontier Days. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming.

I was impressed with the variety and scope of the displays which took one from geological time to near the present. There are video recordings to watch. I was intrigued by the section on prospecting and a small kit for someone who wanted to prospect for uranium. This place is worth several hours to the person interested in history and geography.

In town for the Train event on Sunday and since I love museums we decided to stop in the Wyoming State Museum. They had two floors to tour which you do on your own but they give you a map. Several places to sit and listen/watch the videos on specific historical events.. very well laid out, bathrooms and elevators if you need. There is no fee but the have a donation bucket. There is also a small gift store. Great place for families to visit, though both my husband and myself thoroughly enjoyed!

This Wyoming Museum is fantastic!! I’ve visited it numerous times, and with no more room than they have, they depicted much of the History Of Wyoming very well!!! The museum’s exhibits are ever changing and I understand there are plenty of items in their storage to create TWO OR MORE MUSEUMS of this size!

Great collection of exhibits and information in a small museum (2 floors). We live in Cheyenne and make it a point to show the museum when friends/relatives visit us. There is something for all ages. Nicely organized and displayed, the exhibits provide themed snapshots of periods of WY history as well as hands-on experiences. The gift shop provides unique WY items for sale and well worth a stop.

The Wyoming State Museum is a wonderful way to spend a morning. The greeter at the front desk was friendly and welcoming. The museum featured a terrific exhibit of the state's history. I particularly enjoyed the exhibit about the state capital restoration. Be sure to visit the gift shop, too. There is no entrance fee, but donations are welcome.

Very nice free museum to wander around and learn about Wyoming. They're in the process of updating some exhibits but there was still plenty of stuff to see. The building is very close to the capitol building so if you go there this is a great place to go to as well without having to travel a long way.

Great to read about all the history of the area. It’s not a large museum but it had numerous interesting exhibits. The gentleman at the front desk was friendly and inviting.

Many facets of Wyoming's fascinating history are explored at the WSM. Exhibits change frequently, making return visits a pleasure.

learned alot. found out things that we never new.
The information we recieved i will pass on. The broucher could have had a little mre detail to it but thats ok.

Being our first time in Cheyenne was not sure where to go. Read all the reviews and decided to check Wyoming state museum because it was free! The museum had many artifacts and exhibits. They had a nice children's area. If you enjoy history you will enjoy this place. The museum is excellent for every level of reader. My son who is dyslexic thoroughly enjoyed the visual aspect of this museum. Museum is excellent for every level of reader.

A great way to learn about the state of Wyoming and it's history.
Kid friendly and the best part is it's free!

We had family in from Michigan and decided to take them to the State Museum. Wasn't sure if it would be an exciting excursion, but we were pleasantly surprised. Lots of great information about the state and their exhibits were pretty cool. It shows the progression of the state from prehistoric to now. There is something for everyone no matter what the time period. Our family really enjoyed it. Tour probably takes 2 hours to get through plus it is free.
Professionalism at Its Best
I didn't visit the Museum but have to use this title as Trip Advisor won't allow me to list the Wyoming State Archives...their bad. Anyway, the State Archives are located inside the State Museum building, turn left as you enter the door. If you are a history buff or genealogist or research historian looking for original and period papers and insider information about early Wyoming, this is the place! The fact that the staff is so knowledgeable and helpful was icing on the cake. Before my visit, I emailed the Archives a list of research topics as well as books and diaries I wanted to view. They found these items AND dug out additional information that I didn't even know was in their extensive, one-of-a-kind collection. A delight to work with such professional employees.
