Beautiful, so much to see!!!!

By Viviana42California |

Visiting for first time this part of the country, it was May during "Bulldog day" for new students undergraduate.
This is a private University, one of the "Ivy League" ones, and I lear is the third oldest University in USA, also one of the Colonial Colleges. The buildings are so beautiful, the campus georgeous, it really reminds me some parts of Europe, I never imagine to see any part looking like this in this country, the University is spread around downtown New Haven, and is a MUST see destination if you ever travel around here, is a lots of history around here, and picture perfect sports all over, a must see place here in CT.

great to visit

By NormIllinois |

Very enjoyable campus to visit. Not very crowded. I would suggest to take a campus tour and maybe take in some events.

Great visit despite rain

By Janteuwen |

We took the guided visit with a great student guide Alon, the grounds are magnificent but a good guide makes the difference!

Beautiful Campus

By marthaemi |

What a beautiful campus to see. It’s a great place to walk around and see all the beautiful buildings. New Haven has a lot to offer.

Unexpected

By Mimi |

We were in NYC and we like to visit college campuses around the country. Took the train from GCT to New Haven and walked from the station to the Yale campus - if you call it that. A green square is the gathering place though at this time of year is was only homeless and peddlers. Lots of beautiful buildings and an inordinate number of churches. Didn’t feel like a united campus area and not a great choice of restaurants. Wouldn’t take the almost 6 hour round trip again.

"Beautiful Campus"

By dorbillk |

Yale is a beautiful Campus to look at even if you don't go to school there. I have lived in the area all my life and I have not seen all of the campus. Every time I am in New Haven I walk the through the Campus love to look at the architecture of the buildings it is so beautiful. I can't wait until the new dorms are finished because they are going to be so nice.

Fall Visit to Yale

By Janet S |

Due to COVID we could not go into any buildings last year when our son entered grad school. This fall, Oct. 2022, we got the personal tour and it was incredible…the library, the divinity school, Marquardt Chapel, the music school, Dwight Chapel, Old Campus, The Beinecke Museum (my favorite), a beautiful, campus with a rich history and well worth seeing!

Lovely

By kathleen0 |

Especially the library! Loved the old buildings, the ceilings everywhere, the friezes outside the law building.

Not As Impressive As I thought It Would Be

By C M |

I'm a big fan of architecture, and it was nice, but just not as spectacular as we thought it would be. It did get dark early in November, so that could have played a factor in it. Most things were locked down (gates, etc.) and was hard to find the buildings we were looking for. I wouldn't make a special trip to see it again.

Magnificent

By anshul1goyal |

I was fortunate to be accompanying a student of Yale. He explained that all buildings were built to replicate some meaning. Like one of the buildings was built to replicate a building which was set on fire in London.

Blue Light District

By Grant |

Library was closed, that's for the one star less. The campus is beautiful and the architecture is superb. The parks south of old campus was full of homeless people. I have never seen so many blue "rape" lights in my life. Made me wonder how safe the campus is at night.

Nice collection of art

By mb52015 |

I did not expect for a college art museum to have such a wide collection of what I consider the masters of fine art.

Historical

By Linda M |

The Yale Campus is glorious! To walk through the grounds and tour some of the buildings is a walk in the shadows and influence of some of the brightest and best leaders in the world, in all walks of life. The environment of excellence is palpable everywhere you turn. It was a pleasure and a privilege to visit this world-famous campus.

Helpful and Friendly Tour Staff.

By DoverJungleboy |

My wife and I spent about five hours on the Yale campus. We could have spent a couple of days in New Haven. Plenty to do. We parked on the street on campus and worked our way to the visitor center. Fortunately, we met Patrick, the tour director. He was very kind to work us into a later tour. He also suggested Claire’s corner copia for lunch. An excellent recommendation.

We took the last tour led by a young lady from Texas. Her name started with a P. She was filled with energy. She was able to give us a succinct history of the college, showed us the major buildings and described the life of a student. We recommend this tour. Book it ahead of time on the Yale website.

Excellent half a day on the Yale campus. We would go back if we make it back to CT.

Beautiful

By cathyam2016 |

Walking around Yale was beautiful. There are so many great things to say. If you look up you see gargoyles on certain buildings which is awesome. You can also go see the oldest Bible. You can also go to two different museums. You can also take a backstage tour of the Yale Rep Museum. And of course you can go to Peles gym and walk around which is some of the newest equipment you’ve ever seen. I love walking around and Yale every time you walk around and you see something different.

family trip with young children

By Maria S |

We travelled with 3 young kids (1, 3 and 6 years old). We all enjoyed the views, buildings, atmosphere of the university. The libraries are amazing, you can go inside and look, most see! Since the weather was nice, we had picnic on the grass same as the students. :) Thank you!

Beautiful Campus to Tour

By cindy8 |

We took the campus tour on a perfect fall day. It is not directed at potential students, but made me wish I was one! The buildings look like they belong at Oxford in England, or Hogwarts! I recommend it if you are in New Haven on a lovely day.

Always inspiring to visit

By samuelabrams |

Love the collegiate Gothic and the presence of this campus. Full of history and always inspiring. Good visit

Like visiting Hogwarts

By JC P |

My son is doing his residency at Yale Hospital, so we had to check out the Yale campus. Like walking into a time machine or a visit to Hogwarts. The architecture is gorgeous. I could wander for hours.

Yale's Sterling Memorial Library has some 30 floors of books & more

By auntiearwen |

Every year, a small group of us include a Saturday at Sterling Library as part of our mini conference focusing on cults of the Roman Empire. The incredibly wide selection of books, prints, Judaica, coins, microfilms makes this a major destination point for our little group of scholars. You can search for titles, authors, keywords, etc. on Orbis, the online catalog. In order to gain stacks entry, you have to get (and pay for) a photo stacks pass, but the cost isn't much. There is also a station where you can scan journal articles etc. free to a thumb drive or to a file sent to your email address. Many seldom-consulted books are in off campus storage, so if you want to see one of those, get your 2 week stacks pass paid for a week ahead of time; you will then get a VIS number (for "visitor"), and then you can order the books sent to Circulation so that they'll be there when you show up at the library in person. There's a paid parking lot within easy walking distance of the library.

Very pretty campus

By tk1978 |

Yale was lovely to walk around. My son was fascinated by the large historic buildings and greenery on the campus. We found a nice little Greek place to eat lunch and some eclectic shops to browse. Would have liked to spend longer there.

One of our best.

By bklynbubba |

Make sure to take a tour of the campus which begins at the visitor's center. then afterwards walk around this beautiful campus yourself. Day or night, it really represents the best and shows with pride the highest achievements of the educational system in our country.

Graduation

By CocoWashington |

Absolutely astonishing! The entire town celebrated the graduates! The campus is seriously beautiful and the campus school of theology is outstandingly lovely.

Beautiful university

By _voichekm |

If you have a few hours to spend, go and see the Yale. I had a personal guide, my son, and saw the structures during the day and in the evening. The buildings are kept very well and it’s a joy just to walk through the campus. Try to get into the libraries and other buildings.

School trip

By janetalling |

I went on tour of yale with teachers and 11 special needs students (18-21)
We all loved it. The tour guides made the tour appropriate for these students in addition to answering adult questions and supplying info to teachers
It was extremely informative and quite an outstanding place to visit
I will bet that there are very very many new haven county people who have not seen Yale- and they should !!!

Beautiful accessible campus.

By Phyllis B |

Be sure to get a campus map because so many streets are one way. But the effort is worth is. A lovely campus.

Amazing

By Kecia |

This university is amazing even if it’s just to look at or visit ..the structures were a work of art ,super busy area though .

Huge campus!

By sirenazulclaro |

The Yale University Campus is immense! Seems fairly walkable with opportunities to enjoy greenery throughout campus grounds. Very close to Downtown so lots of eating options and things to do.

Incredible

By Pip M |

Stunning buildings everywhere you look! We were there on a Sunday afternoon so missed a lot of things being open but even wandering round looking at the architecture was perfect. We almost skipped New Haven on our trip but I’m so glad we didn’t!

City College

By niraash |

Though there is an old campus which is enclosed, a lot of the college buildings are in the city. Somehow, I find that colleges with traditional campus have more character.

Needed more time

By Strawberry Fields 4 Ever |

We walked around all day & still didn’t cover the half the area. The architecture is simply beautiful. We ate at Pepe’s too.

Architectural & Educational Marvel

By Steve W |

First visited Yale two years ago with my wife and son, a prospective student. Now he's a freshman at this marvelous university, and we've had an opportunity to visit three more times. I'm not sure that families or individuals without a direct connection to the school would be very interested in exploring the area unless they have a lively interest in history, tradition, and first class architecture. If you do have such an interest, by all means come see this school which is consistently ranked among the world's best and most beautiful. Yale is in the heart of downtown New Haven. You can make your way to 149 Elm Street on the side of the Village Green or take a self-guided walk starting at Phelp's Gate the entrance to the Old Campus, now a freshman dormitory center, on College Street directly across from the Green. Yale has a mix of architectural styles including Georgian as represented by Connecticut Hall, the oldest building on the campus and found within the walls of Old Campus, Brutalist as seen in Yale's School of Architecture building on Chapel Street, and old stately mansions now converted to undergrad admissions and a host of other departments on Hillhouse Avenue, once described by Charles Dickens as America's most beautiful street. However, the dominant style is collegiate gothic which gives Yale its Harry Potter Hogwarts feeling, a conscious building decision made less than a century ago to emulate, it seems, the medieval look of true middle ages institutions of higher learning, Oxford and Cambridge in Britain. Yale is old of course, founded in 1701, well before we were an independent nation, but it looks even older. The neo-gothic is abundant and striking in its detail and beauty. See the magnificent residential colleges, Branford with its magnificent Harkness Tower and Saybrook; visit the Sterling Library, a cathedral like structure that may be the second largest university library in the U.S.; don't forget to take in the gym- at nine stories it is said to be the second largest in the world. There's too much more to say, but space won't allow me to say it. Just walk, breathe the air, have lunch on Chapel Street or in one of New Haven's famed pizza parlors. Buy a sweatshirt on Broadway and dream of being young again, one of the privileged students at this amazing institution of higher learning.

Beautiful!

By Justine v |

If you are visiting New Haven the Yale campus is a must see!! The buildings are very pretty to see, with very intricate architecture. Also the little shopping street is fun, they have a huge book store and even some clothing stores. This area also has a lot of trendy little places to eat. Even if you have no intention of studying here it is just fun to see.

Great tour

By Jo A |

We did not identify there was a tour. Attended the tour centre and they identified an hour tour was available. Great selling point for university great for visit enjoyed thoroughly

Historical Campus Walk

By teacher152015 |

While on a tour of New England we spent a fall morning walking the campus of Yale University. The historical old buildings are beautiful and full of architectural detail. There are many hidden gems such as court yards and statues to see. Street parking is available near the visitors center on Elm Street.
Even if you do not plan to become a student here you will enjoy the history and atmosphere of the area.

Fantastic Building Structure

By D_v_D_USA |

The buildings around the city show an amazing structure, It is worth a walk around the street to see the different campuses.

Most Beautiful of the Ivy League Campus

By Gary N |

We have walked many of the Ivy League campuses. This is by far the most attractive. We only walked the "old campus" but it was worth the time. Spend some time in the library. The architecture is outstanding.

Beautiful architecture

By Messiah's H |

Once we got into the campus area the stature of these historical buildings was just awesome. The student seemed courteous and the grounds were very clean. The library area is a must-see- oh my you can't imagine them what a place to study! And I thought Penn State had a fantastic Library... considering Yale started as a seminary I should not have been surprised, what we saw was truly outstanding!

Great Atmosphere

By Helena L |

We wandered the campus, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the art and architecture. A lovely walk on a sunny afternoon.

Beautiful Campus

By Charles R |

Very pretty walkable campus and town. Staff at visitor centre were really helpful and directed us to the highlights to see in the short time we had. Visitor display is pretty light on content and could be improved with some exhibits of artefacts from various periods in the history of the campus. Museum of British Art is worth seeing. Works by all major British Artists throughout history are represented in Louis Kahn's masterpiece of gallery achitecture. Great to visit at start of semester when students were all out an about.

Enriching!

By Simba |

Go to the visitors center and join for a tour around the campus! Tours start at 11:30 and 14:00 and are free. They are given by students of Yale so they know a lot about the campus and the university itself. Very nice informing tour about the basics and the history of the university.

Worth a visit

By Alison C |

New Haven, Connecticut is in large part Yale University. The university old campus comprises many lovely buildings and grounds that offer a pleasant stroll around this town. Any Gilmore Girls fans will recognise the statue of Theodore Dwight Woolsey, which has one very shiny foot where generations of Yale students have 'touched the toe' for luck.

Breath in the Knowledge

By Bill A |

The day before we visited Yale - we had visited the Harvard campus - and I think the air at Harvard is just a little smarter then the air at Yale....could be wrong though. Fun place to walk around and hit up some shops and diners.

Great Walk

By ARose |

Great place to take a walk and enjoy the architecture. Most buildings look unique from one another and make a very enjoyable walk. If you want to get more history then you can take a walking tour. If you are near the area, its worth taking at least 30 minutes to walk some of the campus.

It's Yale!

By John C |

There are different kinds of visitors at college campuses. Tourists -- and these will find Yale accessible, commodious, gentile and attractive -- prospective students -- and these will want to take a tour since what they'll want to see and learn about won't be ordinarily visible -- and academics -- and these will feel comfortable, at home, and head to Sterling Library to see some of what the fuss is about.

Quick Walk Through.....

By Kkiimm |

We chose to stay in New Haven because of Yale. We were traveling with two teenagers and two students from their school are enrolled. We did not schedule an official tour but our walk through campus and its neighborhoods and stores made us want to return. Hopefully, next time as parents of a Yale student or two!

Something to see

By kguzzetta |

This is one of my must see places in CT. I almost went here for college, so had to go for a visit and was not disappointed. What a lovely campus, and enjoyed seeing the architecture and grounds. Kind of disappointed I didn't go there. The feeling of an old institution such as this has a special place in American Higher education.

Awesome

By LynnLagor |

What a beautiful place to visit, loved walking around the wonderful buildings, soaking up the atmosphere. We went into the library it is amazing in there, couldn't go up to the 15 floors of books to see the 10 million books, but we could go into the reference library. Would recommend this place to visit for sure, loved it .

Wonderful historical campus

By Mabel S |

Just strolling around the campus you could feel a sense of prestige and the architecture is so full of history. If you're new to Yale, you must join a tour with a guide to explain the history of the buildings. Don't forget to check out the library which is housed inside a majestic church building. There's a fascinating history related to the architect why the library building looks like a church and I'll let you find out yourself.

Just beautiful!

By Tina M |

We really enjoyed walking around the university - the buildings are so cool. Lovely campus with very tidy grounds and just an overall great place to walk around.

Nice campus – visit Ingalls Rink

By jjctraveler |

I explored the Yale campus on my own and did not take the tour. First of all, parking is horrible, which is to be expected at Ivy League schools. I parked in the Crown Street Garage in Downtown New Haven which cost $13 for the day. The Old Campus off the New Haven Green is stunning with mature trees, great architecture and students focused on their cell phones who will walk right into you. As you continue walking north you enter the newer parts of campus, which is sprinkled with many building designed by great architects. Unfortunately, the grounds and in many cases the buildings are in poor condition. A great example is Rozenkranz Hall by Cesar Pelli which needs a good cleaning, and the flower beds were full of weeds. Most of the buildings have (very rude) guards so you can’t easily explore them. As others have noted, the city of New Haven around Yale is very poor and scary, so be careful.
Must see buildings include the Becton Center by Marcel Breuer, a masterpiece in concrete with no guards so you can explore the first floor. Paul Rudolph’s architecture building which has a second floor gallery open to the public. The Payne Whitney Gym has a hall of fame for famous athletes from Yale who have gone on to great success, even presidents (if you can get past the rude guard). The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library which was just renovated, and of course the Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art (both free). But possibly the best building on campus is Eero Saarinen’s Ingalls rink which was open on my visit and you could explore the entire building. It looks small on the outside, but a soaring concrete arch supports the roof on the inside, like a shorter version of the gateway arch in St. Louis. Saarinen was a master and this building shows his great skill. Best building on campus.
The architecture of Yale still beats Harvard by a mile. And while some buildings and landscaping need cleaning and repair, Yale is still more respectful of them than Harvard.

History

By Meg F |

What a cool place to visit. This place has been around for hundreds of years and is a must see. The buildings are amazing and well crafted. Great history and a nice place to walk around.

Quick visit, should have stayed more time!

By Annex_BR |

On our way to Cape Cod from NY, we stopped for lunch at Yale (Food Carts by Ingalls Rink, nice experience), and since we still had many miles to drive, did only a quick tour by ourselves. Very beautiful campus, old buildings surrounded by well-cared gardens and trees. Should have planned a more lengthy visit, including the student-guided tour, to get to know the halls in more detail.

Picturesque

By Brian C. |

Yale has a truly beautiful campus. The architecture is amazing and the history of Yale is equally interesting. The campus is easily walkable and not hard to move through.

The Best

By ranno2017 |

Wonderful place to stroll through. Such beautiful buildings and so much to see. Cannot say enough about it's historic nature

Real life Harry Potter buildings

By i0e192 |

If you are in the Northeastern part of USA, make sure you take some time out to visit this great university. The buildings and history are so fascinating and there is so much to see. Words can't describe how peaceful everythong seems here.

Evening stroll with History

By Prfct_Fan_Food_Srvc |

After a fabulous and filling dinner, we decided to take an evening walk on the Yale campus.

It was a treat walking the area and seeing the historic buildings and structures.

I am hope the typical Yale student appreciates the campus architecture and many traditions.

Wonderful architecture

By Tigergram |

I used to work in New Haven and on my lunch break I wood walk through the campus of Yale University. The carvings on the buildings and the beautiful architecture is amazing. These buildings are irreplaceable. In spring the flowering trees and bushes add to the beauty. The Beinecke Library is awe-inspiring. The Law School's carved wood interior is a work of art. The Yale University campus gives the feeling of permanence and stability and the impression that it will endure forever.

A step into the past

By Leonhkny |

The campus of one of America's oldest universities is like a medieval fortress. A walk around the historic buildings and leafy yards is enjoyable. To go inside visitors have to join guided tours.

Beautiful campus

By Bdett M |

From SC, here for college tour. Campus is in the middle of New Haven, has a city vibe. Campus is beautiful, architecture is stunning. Everyone seems genuinely happy to be here. Campus is very walkable. Larger then we expected. Luved that the dorms are individual “colleges” with court yards and that an advisor/Dean is onsite. Campus feels safe, gated entry to colleges and all buildings locked. Wish potential students could see some classrooms/labs on the tour. Stadium and fields are pretty far away and not walkable. Nice downtown area with lots of dining n shopping options. Parking is limited.

Take the free tour!

By Victoria T |

Started with a video explaining what is available at Yale. Then a campus tour with a Yale graduate. Learned a lot about Yale both past and present. Wonderful architecture again, old and new.

Greenest urban university

By Kumu F |

Tour done by students..easy walk ..lots of secret gardens, old gothic carillon tower which will play Mozart and yankeedoodle depending on the musicians whim. Book ahead, wait for good weather....walking shoes. Inhale the history.

Beautiful Campus, Tour and Info Session Not As Good As Others

By AndreLePlume |

My son and I visited Yale on a tour of colleges in the Northeast. The campus is beautiful, but their info session and tour was much more poorly organized than some others (MIT, Harvard, Columbia, Penn). Plus New Haven has much less to offer than other cities. If you are interested in seeing old schools and getting an interesting tour, I would more highly recommend Boston and, especially, Cambridge area.

An inspiring place

By Andrea R |

If you are ever near Yale stop by and visit the University to become inspired by the architecture, the stories, the history and the art. We went on a student tour and got amazing insights into this amazing place. One of the libraries has a complete gutenberg’s bible- the first book ever printed. Worth a detour

BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS IN ALL SEASONS

By Elizabeth M |

I'm an alum, so I'm prejudiced. I just took two friends for their first visit and they love it too - one a Harvard alum so that's saying plenty, Everything from Victorian to New England brick to NeoGothic to post WWI modern. Yale is scattered over New Haven and West Haven; the main campus is in central New Haven; the Medical Campus in the southwest, the science and Divinity buildings to the east, and much science, technology, and storage on the West Campus. Yale Bowl is way out near the Merritt Parkway, while the majority of the campuses are close to I-95. If you haven't been there, take one of the guided tours before branching out to the museums, libraries, classroom buildings, main chapel, and others as they interest you. Parking is tight; however on York St. near Chapel is a parking garage a few steps from the Yale University Art Gallery, the Center for British Art, and the shops and restaurants on Chapel Street or, a block away from the corner of York and Chapel, are more shops including the Yale Bookstore run by Barnes & Noble. The Art Gallery is a destination museum, a must-see for art lovers.

Beautiful Campus!

By Kara P |

What a beautiful campus! We decided to stop by while on vacation just to check out the campus. So glad we did! The architecture is beautiful on each building. It was nice just to stroll and look at the beauty of the buildings. We also strolled through the Grove Street Cemetery to pay our respects to a few notable people that made significant advances in the world.

The best of the Ivy League

By Arpit Jain |

I have been to Harvard, MIT, Princeton. But by far this is more historical and more beautiful. I loved the architecture too much. A must visit.

Great Tour of Campus

By Venia g |

Loved Touring Yale. Made me want to go back in time and attend College here. Awesome guide and Great end of Summer Day to See a Beautiful Campus. Will go visit the Libraries more in depth the next time Im in town. If your thinking of going back to school or just want to see a Great Campus with wonderful people. Make sure you stop over to the Campus Tour best thing about it is its FREE.

Beautiful historical site

By joshua E |

Parking in the evening is free, during the day was reasonable. There are several different things to see all around the campus but, the beautiful architecture on most of the buildings is enough to enjoy for a few hours.

Beautiful Campus

By Andrew B |

I was blown away at how beautiful the University was. Aril was the perfect time for a visit. The buildings reminded me of Europe, unlike anything else I have seen in the U.S. The campus was walkable and had lots of helpful signage. Could not enter any buildings because of COVID. Great time though.

1 hour tour

By Lisa L |

My daughter and I took the 1 hour tour. We got a small look at life at Yale....architecture, the amazing libraries, student dorms...it was nice. Our guide was a junior there and he did a great job. We got all sorts of Yale stuff at the bookstore and it was a fun stop on our Gilmore Girls road trip.

Great place to visit even if you are not studying there

By Tanchigui |

Impressive buildings and grounds in this more than 300 years old Ivy league university. You need more than one day to enjoy the campus, see the buildings and visit the art galleries and libraries.

Beautiful Campus - Historical Visit

By Dave W |

The campus at Yale is beautiful. We strolled casually through the open campus on a beautiful Fall day with leaves falling and students running through the cool October weather. Besides the history and prestige, the campus is just a beautiful place to visit. Drive or walk most of the campus.

Beautiful university

By joyhuang2016 |

Yale university is simply beautiful. Surrounded by lots of garden and small shops, this university is something that a lot of students would want to go. If you are a tourist, you can get a free tour around the campus. Be sure the budle up if you come during winter season

Prestigeous University With Beautiful Architecture.

The University is well laid out, though it is very modern in its thinking & facilities retains its Historic values, Driving through you can experience both Ancient & Modern Architecture merging well

Beautiful Ivy campus

Loved visiting the Yale campus during a business trip. I was amazed with the architecture and the traditional decor of the campus library and other common spaces. Made for a lovely stroll on a Wednesday afternoon.

A place I always wanted to visit

By Faye G |

I am from CA and visiting my Aunt & Uncle who live in Stratford. Their docs are at Yale in New Haven, so they arranged us to tour Yale University after her doctor appt. It was a great tour through the grounds. This place is so big and I love, love, love the stone buildings. The grounds are beautiful and I can feel all the history associated with Yale. I think any student attending Yale should be happy to attend not only a prestigious university, but one that is just gorgeous and welcoming.

Classic Ivy League University, historic gem.

By leisurist |

Yale is a great example of what a top level university can be. It looks the part. Meeting students or professors adds to the experience.

Simply stunning University

By SimoneBluefox |

Yale University is impressive indeed. A beautiful collection of Colleges and Halls all with beautiful architecture (even the more modern buildings) and some lovely green spaces within the colleges. If possible take a peak at the pool and the Payne Whitney Gym.

Varied architecture and a model campus

By malcolm_groome |

The campus feels quaint, even though it covers a lot of ground and has an impressive range of facilities. Different architectural styles blend well.

Nice visit

By Melissa L |

Nice place to visit even if you’re not a student, the architecture is amazing, is nice to go solo, with friends or family, I went with my 3 host kids, we enjoyed the walk there, took some pictures, spend time at the library, some stores at the avenue and went to have lunch in a vegan/ parve restaurante called Claire’s.

Beautiful campus

By Karen L |

We toured with our high schooler. Even if you're not scouting out colleges, it is an interesting place to walk around and visit. The library/museum has some really neat artifacts- including the Gutenberg Bible, and is open to the public. The student library is a converted church whose architecture is just gorgeous. The tree lined streets are very serene. There is a distinct academic flair fitting for an ivy league giant.

Spare time in work trip

By gromit68 |

Yale has a lovely campus. We walked to the visitor center and talked with the sophomore working at the entrance. She was very knowledgeable and made suggestions as to what to go see. We went to the library and nerded our over the reference library. We didn’t have time to visit the rare archive library. I definitely recommend a visit.

Excellent Tour

By rlwlawrisk |

We were able to sign up for a student's tour of the University. Our guide, Taylor, was s 2nd year student. He was very enthusiastic about both the University and the city. The tour lasted approx 2 hours and included 2 of the schools and the library. We enjoyed the history lesson and the walking tour.

A fine University with free tours.

By mike l |

You can sign up for free tours of the campus. I like the old campus and the library. Parts of one of the Indiana Jones movies were shot on the streets of New Haven and in Sterling library (where Indiana on a motorcycle went up the steps and into the nave).

Thoroughly enjoyed the free student led tour!

By Marion O |

We arrived at 10am and parked in a small parking lot on Wall St. near Temple Ave. $5 an hour. If you go on a weekend, you probably can find street parking. The Visitor Center is at 149 Elm Street in an old house. There is a small room with the history of Yale displayed. At 10:20 they show a video and the FREE student led tour starts at 10:30, and it lasts for about an hour. It is an hour of walking, no sitting, and is fairly fast paced. So I would not recommend this for elderly who walk slow. He did take us inside of two libraries, but the rest is an outside tour of the beautiful buildings. They operate rain or shine, but we were blessed with a beautiful day! Next time I hope to go to the Art Gallery, which is also free! Directions are on the Yale website.

Stunning Campus at one of the Finest Universities

By Alexandra Z |

Yale is simply beautiful. The myriad of Gothic-style buildings, the green spaces, the many beautiful residential colleges, the Beinecke Rare Book library, and so on all add up to make Yale as visually impressive as its reputation as one of the top, top universities in the USA. I love the cloistered residential colleges - such a great system. The concept is modeled after a Oxford and Cambridge (but Yale is not as grand and breathtaking replete with major historic architecture as the two in the UK) but it’s beautiful on its own merits. Also, at Yale students have access to all the residential college’s courtyards and dining rooms. I wish the buildings were authentically old but most of them were built before WWII so the illusion of an ancient university is incredibly real and simply beautiful. I think the campus is well organized and works well as a cohesive campus within New Haven.

A SCHOOL TOUR NOT TO BE MISSED

By JeffreyGL48 |

There's a free tour preceded by a 10 minute film. Production values are high. Surely a bunch of writers, actors and editors had their hand in this film. Tour leader (Amol) was knowledgeable, a great public speaker and had a nice sense of humor. I'd swear he was in the Drama School but he's going to do medical research. Oh, and the campus is interesting and historic as well.

Went to my step son's graduation ceremony at Yale and then saw him receiving his degree certificate at Morse College. Very beautiful buildings and university grounds. Art gallery was good considering it was free and that library, wow. Most impressive.

Very nice town to walk around. The buildings for photos are excellent it feels like you are in Europe. The Museum of Art was free to walk through. It was a nice stroll through Yale university campus.

Yale library

By Tal |

The library was beautiful. We can not enter to the campus without arranged tour. Walking on the streets of Yale next to the campus was very fun.

it all good

By Reginald T |

it a beautiful place to study and have a career.
plus go on tour over the university.it have a lot of history

It is very solid institution

By Talgat D |

The campus is very beautiful, something like Harry Potters buildings but very well organized. The World Scholar's Cup brought us there, so we were able to feel only Woolsey Hall where the Yale students have their graduation. It is very impressive place and it is an honor to be graduated at such premises.

At the top of world

By Jaatinen |

Amazing place where you really can feel the speciality and heritage of this University. Different colleges mix different faculties and thus creating unique atmosphere among the students. Hard to tell which is new and which is old as all is built to match the previous architecture.

Yale

By Pete |

We stayed at the Omni hotel which was one block away from Yale University. We walked almost the entire campus just admiring the buildings. The architect of the buildings is amazing . I just wish they would have been some kind of signage or a marquee that said Yale University established 1701 . It would have made for a nice photo op

Simply walking the campus and catching the Yale aura is awesome!

By Beverly B |

I thoroughly enjoyed walking through and around campus every day that I was in town. Do not miss the 6:00 and 7:00ish p.m. carillon bells that ring. Sign up for a free tour of campus which allows you to get into "student only" areas, fills you in on the history of Yale as well as the campus "myths". Make sure to walk the campus both during the day as well as at night.

Truly beautiful campus!

By Shimmergrl |

What a beautiful campus!! I stopped at Yale on a road trip and am so glad I did. I just parked on the street and walked around. The buildings are absolutely GORGEOUS! I was amazed at the architecture and beauty. The Sterling library was just stunning. I highly recommend spending some time walking around and just marveling at all of the buildings and landscape!

Beautiful Buildings

As a huge Gilmore Girls fan, a trip to Eat Coast USA wouldn't be complete without a trip to Yale.

It is an absolutely beautiful collection of buildings.

Very beautiful buildings to see. Worth walking around and seeing. It makes you curious to see the inside of some though.

Gorgeous and enlightening university vibes

By dustythoughts |

I love wandering around the Yale area, not just for the cool shops and restaurants, but also for the gorgeous buildings and laidback, intelligent vibes. Take your time and pay attention to the stunning details on the various buildings, wander to the Green to see what social activity's being held, and take a tour of campus if you have some time. The campus is a bit spread out and requires some walking, but it's worth a visit if you're able to manage the walk. Visitors can enter the library, which is great. In good weather, students will study outside, so between the students and the tours, it's a busy area.

Walking tour of Yale University

By Sharon S |

Yale University is a wonderful place for a walking tour and several museums, shops, and restaurants can be visited. The architecture is very interesting and it is interesting to stroll through Grove Street Cemetery. Hillhouse Avenue is a beautiful short street with lovely homes that have been converted into office buildings for the university. There are food trucks, a creperie, ice cream shops and good restaurants along with bookstores and shops.

Visitor’s center tour

By Janene L |

Meet at the visitors center at 10am or 2pm for a walking tour of campus. You will see the architecture and hear the history of the university and buildings. You are guided through the beautiful Sterling Library which was built like a cathedral. You will also see a residence college, and the Bynaki Rare Book Library. I recommend this tour over the admissions tour, unless you have a prospective student. It’s just an hour and ends at the Yale book store. Love the Bookstore too for all things Yale. Go Bulldogs!

A must visit one of the nicest colleges North East

By MtcSpoor |

The campus is very nice and it provides wonderful places to visit just roaming around, in your visit you can find places that by themselves are worth the trip like the Peabody Museam, the musical instruments, the library, etc. It is also nice to spend time in the restaurant around campus.

I want to go to Yale now…

By allifromWI |

We started in the visitor center, where a young lady gave us a map & some tips on what to check out. We spent a few hours checking out the campus. It’s a beautiful campus. The new buildings are interesting to look at and the old buildings are beautiful. My only complaint would be the lack of parking, but you’re going to see that at any urban university.

Stunning architecture

By Leanne G |

We came to New Haven to take a walking tour of Yale University. Our guide was Brandon and he was very informative. He even helped explain the college/university situation to us Canadians. So in love with the architecture. Such a beautiful place.

Beautiful Campus

By RagsKP94 |

We did a campus tour, followed by the information session. The campus is gorgeous. We were very impressed by the feel of a city campus that felt very green. Two libraries were the highlights of the tour. First the Beinecke Rare Books and Manuscripts library housed thousands of old volumes. Many of them are on display. All are available to students. They have two of the 21 surviving full copies of the Gutenberg bible. The second library we entered was the Sterling Memorial Library which is the main campus library housed in a building made like a church but without any religious stained glass or ornamentation.

The dorms or "colleges" were very interesting. Overall we had a very good experience. I recommend going on a tour even if you don't have a student looking to go to Yale.

Beautiful campus

By Always Find Adventure |

Wandering around this campus is such a nice morning or afternoon activity. You feel like you're in Hogwarts. The architecture is beautiful and the streets are just lovely to walk around. If you visit New Haven, I believe they give a nice tour as well.

Lovely walk around on a nice day

By Lola2104 |

We walked throughout the beautiful campus on a warm day. Several of the greens are pleasant to walk through or sit and people watch. The Sterling Memorial Library is outstanding along with the Beinecke Rare Books library. We parked in front of the Grove Street Cemetery (also worth a visit) in a shady metered spot for 2 hours and it was enough time for us.

Beautiful Campus

By LadureeFan |

This was my third visit to Yale -- the first two were guided tours. This time, I walked around on my own. Downloaded GPSmycity and revisited some of the beautiful architecture on campus. Especially love the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library....and Harkness Tower.

Beautiful Architecture

By lizzystick |

We just walked around the campus and looked at all the beautiful architecture. I felt like I was in another century , my Daughter said it was like walking into Harry Potter. I will definitely go back to explore more.

very nice university

By Rizalgs |

The campus is like castle, my daughter said some of the building like hogwards. make sure to join the campus tour.

Take University

By motorcar1 |

We have visited a few campuses in different cities and as we were in Connecticut, we decided to go to New Haven and see Yale. It has that university feel you get in places like Oxford. The building are just amazing and the area has the vibrant feel. We enjoyed our visit and recommend it if you are in the area.

Feast your eyes!

By KOinFredVegas |

So packed with history and tradition. The architecture is literally too much to take in. Any one of the buildings I could observe for hours and there are too many buildings to count! Easy to look like a tourist because people just walk about and don't seem to notice the beautiful buildings and scenery. The campus is big and plenty to see. Also, surrounding campus there are restaurants and coffee shops and book stores from which you can get Yale gear.

Beautiful Campus and History

By Brian B |

What a beautiful campus. Unfortunately, there were no tours do to Covid protocols. The University dates back to 1701. Gothic style architecture and greenery are found throughout. It feels like the campus is the heart of New Haven.

Graduation ceremony

By Nataliia Z |

My daughter graduated from Yale this year. University is gorgeous and gives a lot of attention to the students. They can use the best sources for the work. Professors are friendly and helpful. The graduation ceremony was great and magnificent.

Doesn’t Disappoint

By Kristine8_73 |

We went on an official college visit, but I would recommend this visit to anyone who likes history, architecture, books. Lots of interesting stories about the orígenes and traditions of Yale.

Glad I went

By Chad H |

I had never been to Yale University before, but I took a day trip to visit its campus. It was lovely! Book store was crowded but had lots of cool merchandise and souvenirs.

Chill cloud

By Chill Cloud |

We visited the university because my niece had a debate competition. Wow was the word I heard everyday while walking the campus. We all were wishing how we would love to go back to college, only if we could study here at Yale. Very serene and calm with lots of heritage. We could tell the Buildings have witnessed more than one can imagine. Way to go Yale.

A place to be proud of

By Nader H |

We visited the University through the school guides. The school is very impressive and I wish the students the best.

architectural petting zoo

By redbird33 |

Yale has so many interesting buildings by very good architects. From the recent neo academic colleges on Prospect to Saarinen s masterpieces- Morse and Stiles colleges, Rudolf s A & A bldg, Kahn's art museums and less know former JCC, now the art school. Beineke library is without equal and the older bldgs full of lessons for the observant.

Historic

By Bob C |

Enjoy New Haven and the historic architecture of Yale University! Something different each time you visit with some of the best restaurants in Conn. within walking distance of the campus!

Beautiful campus and museums

By Charles D |

Yale has a beautiful campus in downtown New Haven with impressive classical architecture. Its houses a couple of art museums that are worth a visit. You can see impressionist paintings and work from great English masters including Stubbs, Gainsborough, and Reynolds.

Wonderful Walking Tour

By Barbara H |

We recently stopped in New Haven and hooked up with the walking tour of the University. Our student guide was very personable and extremely knowledgeable on the historical facts of Yale. So Interesting!

beautiful place, lovely people...

By DEXTOR |

It was well worth the visit. What a beautiful campus! You feel as if you are in mediaval times. Building are georgous...Everything is so well maintained and people are so friendly. Loved it!!

Rude and uninteresting visit

By Lance H |

Our visit to undergraduate admissions started out bad. My son checked in and was told without anyone looking at him that he was twenty-five minute early and to sit down. Not welcoming at all. After fifteen minutes he went to the bathroom and they decided to start the program ten minutes early. After showing a ridiculous video that while well produced, it was just silly and added nothing to a desire to attend Yale, we were all told that we had to move to a new building as they had not planned on so many people. The guy leading it said follow me and walked out. I guess we walked a third to a half mile. The guide never checked on who was following. Many people got caught at a cross walk. One lady on crutches never made it that I saw. The guide was a good speaker, but his content was worthless and sleep inducing. We'll look elsewhere for a university.

It’s fun to walk around campus just stay south of the hospital

By Justin W |

While it is nice to walk around the Yale campus and be steeped in its history just stay south of the Yale Hospital and around the Green as the neighborhoods around the campus are sketchy.

When you are on the core of the campus, the building are beautiful especially around the Green.

Another must see college campus

By Kay M |

Along with Harvard, Princeton, West Point and Virginia, for us Yale was a must see. We visit college campuses all over the place, but those five are so old and have such storied pasts, we made special trips just to see them. My husband is a WP grad, but we go back often because it gives us both goose bumps. Yale was similar for me even though the students aren’t walking around in uniforms, the number of famous people who have graduated from Yale, especially the law school, makes it fascinating to me. The architecture is a mixture of gothic, Georgian and modern. You think you’re looking at a church, but it’s a lecture hall or the law school. Unlike the other campuses we have visited, it was very easy to drive through and or park so you could see so much more. The Yale Visitors’ Center was good for us since it was too cold for us to take a 90-minute walking tour which they offer two or three times a day. We saw a film, read some history and spoke with a very nice guy who answered many of our questions.

Since 1701

By Swedishtomcat |

There is an official tour of the university but the very nice student on duty in the Yale University Visitor Centre offered us an excellent self-guided tour instead. She told us all the best places to see and so off we went with our map to venture around the famous university grounds.

As much a tourist destination as a college visit

By ncsaltygirl |

I lived 20 minutes away for 1/2 my life, worked there, swam there... and never took a tour. Went on a campus tour with my child and was delighted. The guides are witty, they share fascinating historical details, you are given background on fun architectural minutia etc. that can only come from the perspective of an insider. I would recommend the (free!) tour as a tourist attraction. Tours are about 1 hour - then hop over to Sal's or Pepe's for pizza!

good tourist walk

By RBCT |

Seek out tours to maximize your experience. The University is beautiful.Try to attend something in Sprague Hall... acustics are wounderful. My favorite tour is of Harness Tower -- incredible with its carillion recitals. It is a must!

Disappointed Many Buildings Closed

By pfefmeister |

We walked around the beautiful campus and wished we could have wandered inside some of the old brownstone buildings, but, unfortunately, they were all closed, so our options were limited. Others have pointed out the sketchy neighborhoods, but we never felt threatened. Grab a 2 hour parking spot - metered at $1 an hour - and walk around soaking up the atmosphere of one of the finest universities in the country.

Stunning architecture -looks like a real university should do

By BigMerk |

We were passing thru New Haven so stopped to see Yale. We parked on a street meter (fairly cheap for a couple of hours) and walked thru the campus. Each building was architecturally more stunning than the next and the giant iron gates were magnificent. We actually thru one of the quads and it felt just like a real university should do.

The one downside was the panic alarms situated every few yards which reflect badly on today's society and the specific area.

Nice atmosphere

By Jenny_7801 |

It was part of an spontaneous Ivy school road trip. The historical building are breath taking. The atmosphere is more urban or mix than Harvard. It a great Campus. Need to come back with more time.

Beautiful University to visit in CT

By Trail238500 |

Yale University is such a beautiful Ivy League School to visit full of history and beauty. A definite walk thru the college grounds. You will admire the architecture & designs lots of nice restaurants close by to grab a bite.

Beautiful campus and architecture

By 31HomeGames |

Yale's campus is exactly how you picture an Ivy League campus should look. Old Campus has stunning buildings, some over 100 years old, surrounding the classic quad. Yale is situated in central New Haven and the university buildings on the surrounding streets are often equally as beautiful.

Stunning

By michelewelker |

My son and I visited for a college tour. Parking is not fun, as is the case at every major university. We found some and walked around the entire campus. The bookstore is large and has everything you could possibly need. The campus is well laid out, everything is easy to find. The buildings are beautiful and old. Very pretty campus. Our only disappointment was that the ice hockey rink was closed for renovations.

Beautiful!

By coreywoo |

Taking in Yale, either on a formal tour or walk alone is fantastic! the architecture is beathtaking even just from the street view. The school does provide free tours which I have participated in twice. I would highly recommend them! seeing the schools history from the student perspective was very enjoyable.

Interesting insight into campus life

By German_Addick |

We were here for an hour-long guided tour of the Yale campus. We had booked the free guided tour in advance on the Internet. Visitor Center is a great place to learn about the history and famous graduates of Yale University. On the guided tour, which is done by a current student, we got a very good insight about everyday life on campus and of course also details about the buildings and the history. It was a very entertaining tour overall.

History at its Best

Daily tours of the University which encompasses a large part of New Haven, CT. Here is a link to tour information: http://admissions.yale.edu/tours
Tours are free and open to the public. On campus you will also find many, many amazing museums - many of them free and open to the public. The University is the City of New Haven so you will find great restaurants and entertainment (great theater) everywhere you go.

Best thing to do in New Haven

By Jabrd |

Nice tours. Architecture. Unless you have access to the University, a guided tour would be very helpful

best place to see in new haven.. wonderful building and museum

By sanju_222323 |

beautiful buildings.. great architecture.. large campus. Art Museum..everything is there, it is sort of one tourist spot rather than a university. I thoroughly enjoyed roaming this place. The library is so big and beautiful. The art museum has no entrance fee, it has 3-4 floors. the museum has gathered really nice sculpture and information from around the world.
Don't forget it comes under IVY league ;)

Worth a visit!!

By V3100RKamyb |

We stopped to spend a few hours walking around campus. We were on a New England summer road trip. It was easy to access off the interstate. Parking was easily available. The campus architecture is amazing. A must see. Having visited both Harvard in Cambridge and the Naval Academy in Annapolis on this trip too I can easily say Yale's architecture is top notch. It was quiet, clean, and beautiful.

It was easy to walk around.

We had lunch nearby at a lovely cafe. It was a beautiful August day.

Highly recommend.

Walk round the campus

By Marianne H |

The 15 minute introductory video was sung by students and basically seemed like a promo but the 75 minute tour was very good despite the cold. The buildings were beautiful and surprisingly the ones that looked oldest were quite new and had been carefully built to look old including pouring sulphuric acid over them. There was a statue of the first American spy who was not very good and caught and hanged. The statue did not look like him as they had no pictures. They chose a handsome student and used him as a model. The buildings that looked like churches and cathedrals turned out to be a library and a gym. Well worth doing. The tours are twice a day and can be combined with a visit to the Yale Art Gallery

Exceptional campus with great architecture & grounds

By RonL40 |

Great place to stroll and visit the historic campus. Peaceful and beautifully maintained. The Library is a treasure as are many of the buildings on campus. A treasure.

It felt like Europe!

By eaglesnesttraveler |

The library was filled with stained glass and beautiful art. The ceilings are decorated, every inch of the building is beautiful and this is why it reminded me of Europe. Stop in and look carefully at each of the details in the buildings.

Yale was classic...as expected!

By steve p |

Our short visit to New Haven and Yale University was one of those experiences that everyone should have. My wife just read the book about George HW Bush 'on being poppy' and it was special to her seeing where he developed his ideas from long ago. the architecture I enjoyed observing as I got to spend my day walking about the town while she was attending meetings. It did live up to expectations. the town of New Haven seemed like a nice small college town and did have it's share of homeless people, which I suppose almost all US towns do these days. I do wish there were more mental health options available everywhere, that would help a lot.

Amazing

History, now, future!! Everything You can feel here, it’s beautifull! The area is one of The most beautifull university area’s in The World!!

Fairytale place

By gelo7 |

This place feels like you've been transported into the past. The campus is clean and well maintained. Yalies, are a passionate and friendly group of students. Watching the upperclassman swarm our car, unpack it, and wisk our daughters stuff up 4 flights of stairs, will always stick with me.

Beautiful school

By gcvsd-cy |

I’ve been to New Haven a few times for swim meets, but this was the first time I went on an official tour.

I was always a fan of Yale’s architecture. And I’ve only ever seen Yale’s buildings mixed in among the New Haven backdrop. But on this tour, I got to really see and experience the others parts of the university. When in certain parts, like the Old Campus, it felt like a different world. I absolutely loved this school. This is probably the most impressive campus I’ve visited. And I’ve visited many of the popular, well-known universities in the North East and Mid-Atlantic. Of the Ivy’s, this is by far my favorite.

The tour itself was pretty good. The guides and presentation were informative and we got to see a good amount, especially on the Engineering tour.

Truly Unique!

By ReviewGuyNoVI |

The Central campus is spread out over 1.1 km square but it feels so much bigger. The rest of the campus covers over 1000 acres and good luck walking that distance.

We walked from the Benjamin Franklin Hall buildings to the Law School in the sweltering heat of 95 degrees and that was too much - not even sure how far away it was but I would advise against that in hot weather.

Yale’s oldest building is only from 1750 and resembles a large house, of figure. All the Gothic Buildings are immense and beautifully photograph.

FYI - street parking does require payment by either Credit Card or Coins - except after 9pm and Sunday’s by the Benjamin Franklin Campus.

Great campus in a quiet city

By evaldez2014 |

Yale University buildings have great architecture. The Woolsey Hall was a great venue for awarding ceremonies. The School of Management was ultra modern.

Yale University was a superb host to the World Scholar’s Cup which my daughter competed in. New Haven was quiet and safe for young students to come and visit for the competition.

Beautiful Campus

Yale is honestly beautiful, it looks like hogwarts. Its a great college campus however some of the surroundings of yale aren't the greatest.. but yale itself and its buildings are really phenomenal

The best place to learn.

Love the town & the university & the people

By WLSH |

We stopped by the university and the town on our way to Boston on Sunday. Our first impression is that the town is very neat. Then we walked into a downtown open church before the service was about to start. Everyone is very nice and friendly. We took the college tour that led by a student. We were able to go in Library(compare with other university this is a big plus, we realize later). Very passionate and informative and clearly. My teenage daughter enjoyed and so did we. Later that afternoon, we also walked into the visitor center and the museum. Everyone were very impressive, friendly and kind. I hope we will be back again.

University spread across the town of New Haven

By Nilesh Patil |

Supposed to be a famous university in USA. We visited since my daughter was attending Champions round of the world scholars cup. All big universities I visited before had a big campus. All university departments are in the campus. Yale is spread across entire town of New Haven making it very inconvenient to visit different departments. At least for me it's a very strange concept of an university.

Architecture, History and Great Community

By JSC |

Now that the student loans are long paid off and the stress of exams are over, each visit back to New Haven always includes a stroll through the campus. It would be hard to imagine New Haven without Yale and vice versa. Spend a bit of time reading about the University and its contribution to virtually every discipline...for over 300 years! If you are a serious history buff, find a guide to help navigate the campus and learn some of the fascinating history.
New Haven is often criticized as a "too small" and insignificant city. Following several crime laden years, I am amazed to see the transformation that New Haven has undergone with Yale being a major shareholder. Visit a museum, walk around Old Campus and enjoy the New Haven Green and of course try some of the world's BEST Pizza. Time well spent!

A genuine piece of history

By jopa331 |

The University and the grounds are a joy to explore. Very concerned that University is attempting to change history, by renaming buildings

Tour from Elm street visitor Center with a college student

By JZoopa |

Our walking tour with Scott started at the visitor center and took about 90 mins taking in the main points of interest as you are guided through areas of the campus that are restricted to pass holders.

This is a good starting point so you can get your bearings to come back to things of interest to you that you may want to spend more time dwelling on when the tour finishes.

It was fascinating to here how relatively new buildings appear to look so old and what techniques were used to create the aged look

The story of the first CIA agents roots in Yales history was funny to hear and how the the CIA copied the statue of Nathan Hale which is also replicated in Virginia

The first place to visit during a trip to New Haven, CT>

By Jack L |

One museum I had intended to visit was the Peabody Museum of Natural History, however this museum is temporary closed till late 2023 or early 2024. My visit was to learn of another museum or site. I met two very helpful women, however I didn't learn their names. After explaining my reason for a visit the Henry Whitfield State Museum was suggested, which was visited.

Like all visitor centers are books, maps, pamphlets &instructions to New Haven sites and surrounding town & villag4es. Just to the south about about 200 yards is a large parking lot at 275 S. Orange Street, which is a 24 hour lot. I parked across Orange Street at 75 George Street, with an entrance off George St. My time parked was at most 20 minutes with no payment, . There was a guard house yet no guard.

I was the only visitor, so had both women's help & ideas. A visit is recommended.

Traditional & Beautiful With Fantastic Students

By VikkiBee |

What a fabulous university this is! The Ivy League schools have always fascinated me so during a trip touring America, I decided to visit a few of the schools. This is my second university and it's absolutely brilliant both as an academic institution and as an historic attraction for the general public. There's a visitor's centre with some history about the university including an alumni area with actual students working and offering information on college life. Yale provides two different tours; one for students and the general public and one specifically for prospective students which focuses more on admissions etc. By the end of the tour, it made me wish I'd attended university here rather than in the UK which is where I'm from. The school is modelled from Oxford and Cambridge and the buildings are actually designed to look older than they are which is just incredible. Our tour guide Adam really knew his stuff and enlightened us with fun facts all the way around the campus tour. What a fabulous place to study, although I was very shocked to learn there's only 5,400 students here! The weather was nice and it made for a very pleasant afternoon stroll which is definitely a must-do if you're visiting the New Haven area!

Great Experience

By WorldTravelers1999 |

My brother attends Yale University, so we decided to go visit the school while in town. I especially appreciate the history here; even some of the classrooms still contain wooden desks and chalkboards. It’s hard to believe the people who came out of the place. This university was once among the best institutions in the world.

Beautfiul campus

By Weissgunn |

If in New Haven for another reason other than Yale, well worth a short while for a walk through. Unboudtedly one of the most scenic universities in the US, and certainly one of the most historic. Do yourself a favour...

Walking among history

By Alex B |

As a tourist visiting this historic university campus (the third-oldest in the United States) during summertime, I admittedly didn’t see or do much besides stop by the Visitor Center and wander the grounds of Yale’s Old Campus. The Visitor Center offers a free exhibit on the history of the university (it’s a series of mounted wall panels, and while very informative, it can get cramped very quickly if there are a lot of visitors in the room with you) and free campus maps. None of the other university buildings I walked past were open — it was a Sunday, so I wasn’t too surprised — but the Collegiate Gothic architecture of the buildings, especially the Harkness Tower and its bells, was so beautiful I didn’t really mind that I had to stay outside. Some day I’d like to come back when classes are in session to get a better sense of what the place is like, but if you love architecture or history, you’ll appreciate the grandeur of this university no matter the time of year.

Much to explore!

By Jen Travels |

You really should park and stroll for a few hours because the university is HUGE.
I went before school started, so it was not really busy, but now that school HAS started....

Parking is metered along the street. There's two apps, including Park Mobile.

University security was very helpful in directions and buildings to see.

You can see the School of Music, Art, Business, Yale President's house, their shopping strip, their religious school, and more.

There's so much to see here that I really can't mention it all, just because there's so many buildings the students use.

The dorms I believe are the ones students use a card to get into some big gates.

The shopping area includes food, clothing, Yale themed items, electronics, and more.

The Yale store had tons of items like clothing, toys, cups, stuffed dogs, and books.

There are not really any places to freely use the restroom.

Really recommend checking out Yale while in town. It's cool to imagine if I had tried harder in school and could've attended here 🤪

Sightseiing

By Sam13-Shane |

Took a train from NYC to New Haven to see coastal journey - off peak prices after 9. About two hours train. Walked round Yale Campus most of which is open to public. Small visitors centre. Could have done free Yale tour - one in morning , one in afternoon if we had been organised. Not much else to see in centre of NH.

Spring break at Yale

By ghotai |

Visited with my son over spring break--the campus was beautiful, but a heavy snowstorm preceding the visit was a damper on the affair. The campus is fantastic, and it was great that he could bring us into his college and show us around.

Yale a walk on the wild side

By TheVoiceofCT |

Had a great time at Yale U. took the walking tour and went to a great museum the Peabody and got to check out some awesome dinosaurs. The second floor is a hands on section with lovely colorful poison frogs. Great place to take the kids!

So lucky this is in my neighborhood!

By HEN |

The varied architecture of Yale University colleges with well-kept grounds and mature trees is a feast for the eyes. What a joy to do my 10,000 steps a day right from my door-step. It's like tourist heaven on earth without having to drive or fly anywhere. Easily 100 photographs worth keeping are snapped on each walk. The free guided tour from Yale's Elm Street visitor center (across from New Haven Green) into at least one of the libraries, a secured college quad or a dining hall, is well worth the wait and tolerating an odious visitor video. The world class art museums are free but not open on Mondays. Often a free-guided docent-led tour or student-led tour at the Yale University art museums is available on weekends.

Super place to walk and explore...

By Tom B |

We've got a friend who's a student so it was extra convenient to meet him and get a guided walk round and "tour." Checked out the library and the school of management...nice cafe...and enjoyed mooching round the buildings and grounds. It reminded me a little bit of a modern Oxford crossed with Harvard and how bad is that. Also went in the 2 galleries which were both worth a visit and were free. The place was on Spring break so it was quiet...hardly a student to be seen. We'll be back.

Great College surrounded by poor conditions

By Procurer |

Great College surrounded by poor conditions. You would never know it by its online pics but there is some very serous economic differences here. One would thick that the college would be spear heading in the community to improve it. However once in side the college it a very nice with it's Ivy wall keeping the community at bay.

A Must visit when visiting New Haven

By NN289 |

Very nice, Pretty, big, clean university. A must tour of the Yale University when visiting New Haven. Do the student guided tours. Very informative when visiting New Haven.

#1 University

By Larry Z |

What can I say? I graduated from Yale in 1980. It was the #1 university in America then and is still right up there. I grew up going to school there. Thr campus itself is spectacular, second only to the diverse student population. And New Haven is safe and a great pkace now.

Surprising!

By Extraordinary724131 |

Was sceptical of touring Yale however was pleasantly surprised at the grounds and history. The school has so funny takes so worth joining in a tour group.

Better than Harvard

By 15Eagles50 |

Visited it and Harvard with my son. You can feel the history and tradition for sure. Great facilities and buildings. They have very high expectation on GPA and SAT scores and their acceptance rate is about 6%.

Magical place

By Mark My Words |

There is so much going on here that absolutely transcends what you can possibly grasp in even several "servings" Truly a buffet of sensory experiences that demands overindulging...

Mix of the old and new

By bose_rima |

The university campuses are spread across town, and you can reach them from orange street or from the museum. Some of the buildings are centuries old and some fairly new.

Beautiful Campus!

By Christyn M |

Just enjoyed walking around the city/campus! Absolutely stunning! It's conveniently located right in the middle of everything so when you get tired you can just plop yourself down in a little cafe and enjoy an nice drink!

A very interesting visit

By Céline Spencer |

I highly recommand the free tour with a Yale student. It starts at 10.30 am with a 10-minute film in the visitor center and then the student takes you all around the university for more than an hour. Kiki, our young guide was great.

Good Thing they Bring Money

By Thomas F |

While it's true that Bridgeport is New Haven without Yale, it's a coin flip the trade off is worth it. While the classic buildings and the charity events and art festival are appreciated, the people inhabiting those buildings are a drain. The entitled attitude is insufferable. The administration actually put out a pamphlet for new students a few years back urging them not to stray far from the campus because of the dangerous locals. Also, if the locals were asked to vote on whether the transients who sleep and beg on the New Haven Green or the SJWs with the PC booths and demonstrations should be banned, the Elis would be ousted in a landslide. A favorite pasttime of the locals is to go to the eternal "Free Mumia" booth and say "If it's free, I'll take 3". As I said, if these guys didn't infuse a ton of money into the area, they'd be as welcome as ketchup at Louis Lunch.

Interesting history tour

By Bill T |

University conducts free student led tours of the campus from the visitor centre on elm st. Interesting history of the University and stories around the buildings and student life. Well Worth a visit.

Awesome legacy

By Carol T |

Beautiful architecture and the symbolic connections throughout the campus is noteworthy! The divinity school history is amazing and essential to this rich heritage that is Yale.

beautiful campus

By CR Pie |

architecture was beautiful. very walkable. the visitor center was well organized with maps available even when the office was closed.

One of the world's great universities

By Tim K |

If walking around a beautiful campus and imagining its impact on the country and world is your thing then Yale is a must visit. New Haven is Yale and the fact that it's in the middle of town speaks to such. The campus is a mix of classic New England, modern with a little small city life mixed in. This is college as you imagine and the tour is worth it.

What a treat to walk the iconic Yale campus!

By MidwestKathM |

Our first visit to the iconic Yale University campus. And it was amazing! Over a 24-hour period, we walked (and drove) to see as the buildings designed by some favorite architects: Eero Saarinen, Frank Gehry, Louis Kahn, Marcel Breuer, and more. We stopped by as many architectural beauties on campus as feasible, including the Paul Rudolph Building (School of Architecture), Yale University Gallery of Art, Bienecke Rare Book Library, Sterling Memorial Library, Becton Engineering Center, Ingalls Ice Arena, and the Stiles and Ezra Morris Colleges. We walked about the campus enjoying the public art, the courtyards, plaques, and the intricate designs on buildings. And went back at twilight to enjoy seeing the buildings lit up!

Historical

By MaryW |

Yale University is one of the oldest educational institutions in the United States. Its Gothic inspired architecture will make you feel wonder, even awe. The newer buildings are interesting, too. See if you can do a tour with the Admissions Office or slip into a lecture hall class. The best part is the Old Campus and the quad. Feel the undivided line of history.

Amazing Campus

By M P |

The campus is amazing. With architecture and antiquated buildings the Yale culture is quite distinct

Yale walking tour

By kel_nur |

Historically beautiful, great walking, so much to see and learn. Recommend dressing warm in November and walking for hours

Such a beautiful school

By Ang F |

It's a beautiful place. We walked around campus and looked around. There was an art museum we stopped by and it was interesting. Definitely worth visiting

Gorgeous campus

By LPLoveToTravel |

What a gorgeous and historic campus. We walked through greens, down alleys admiring the architecture and monuments.

Huge campus

By Nutharin |

Our daughter took a SIG program here. The campus was huge. There were a lot of classic buildings. Many green areas.

New Haven was just like a city of Yale university. Yale buildings was merged with people who live in New Haven.

Not many traffic here.

Nice free tour and way to see Yale

By Nigel G |

We took the free tour from the Yale visitor centre at 10.30. Our student host Kiki? Was very enthusiastic and friendly, she enthused our walking tour taking us to the key locations and giving us some history as well as some amusing anecdotes about Yale. The tour is primarily external looking at the old university buildings around the central campus. It also took in the central library as well as the Beinecke (where I managed to get stung by a wasp), both of these buildings are worth a visit, for their completely different but fantastic design and architecture. The tour took just over an hour and was a good way to see the UNi pick up some info at the same time.

Magnificent YALE!

By Maria Lorraine R |

A university campus you can not miss! The buildings are regal, I visited all the gates that I can, the iron work is remarkable on each one of them, the gardens beautiful, the architecture breathless, the mix of stone and bricks a must see...
Be careful during summer, the park around the church on Temple Street is full of homeless that some times approach you and could be dangerous.

Wonderful Place to Visit As A Tourist

By Peter M |

Needless to say, the Yale campus is exquisite. There is so much history, and the wonderful old stone buildings are a treat for the eyes. I loved just walking around on the campus.

Interesting place to walk around!

By Emily M |

This was a great place to walk around and see some unique architecture - some modern along with the old castle-type buildings. Recommend if you enjoy architecture. Not all of the areas were open due to COVID.

Beautiful Campus

By Lovelandmom_12 |

While visiting our daughter we walked around campus and it is beautiful. The Library is very pretty. We did some shopping at the Shops of Yale at Broadway. I recommend the Custom Bookstore for Yale attire.

Informative and highly recommend a visit to this historic and proud educational institution. Wonderful faculty and lots to learn. Will come back

Enjoyable

By Tom G |

A pleasant walk around Yale University at the heart of New Haven. Unhurried, not busy, attractive, open, beautiful. A most enjoyable afternoon.

Nice campus

By PaulWilliams3rd |

Had a nice tour of the campus. The Yale Art Gallery was the best college gallery we've visited. A lot of history.

Living up to its reputation

By lonelaser |

The Yale campus is dominated by impressive Gothic Revival architecture and careful planning. It looks like one would expect it to. The Sterling Library is more like a cathedral than what would be expected.

The campus invites long walks & contemplation.

Best attraction in New Haven...history, architecture, museums, Sterling Library

By JJFlash7 |

Best attraction in New Haven...history, architecture, museums, Sterling Library... no visit to New Haven is complete without touring the campus... the Arch, Old Campus, Peabody museum, the Whale ice rink

Beautiful Architecture and Lovely Campus

By b0livarh |

We were visiting to compare with other options for school. YALE has a lot to offer a young person. We were glad to have a tour guide that is an upper class man and she could talk from experience. She was very helpful. All visitors to the campus must visit the library, a one-of-a-kind library.

Official tour of Yale - fantastic

By travels_ahoy |

Went on one of the official tours of Yale by visiting their visitor center - tours are free, last around 75-90 mins, and run twice a day during the week and once a day at weekends.
Our guide was really friendly and very knowledgeable. We got to see various parts of the campus and the rare book collection/library was particularly impressive.
If you have time to spare in New Haven, I would definitely recommend this tour.

So very much worth the time

By Minnesota42 |

Parking is a little tricky if you are starting with the visitor center (and I suggest that you do that). After circling one way streets with metered parking we ended up parking in a lot by the retail area of Broadway and Elm and it worked out perfectly for us. The visitor center is not well marked on Elm Street and we ended up in the public library asking for help. The librarian said if she was paid for telling people how to get there she would be retired long ago. The center is located in a white clapboard house just to the block left of the library as you face the front of the library. We arrived at 10:15 AM and decided to go on one of the free tours of the campus. You've got to take advantage of this great deal. We had a wonderful Sr. Student from the university lead us through this beautiful campus to courtyards and places that we most likely would not have seen without her. As it turned out the tour ended by the Yale bookstore, right outside of where we had parked! It couldn't have worked out better. I would suggest an app or GPS driving through the city as it is loaded with one way streets. We are so glad we took the time to visit and take the tour.

Must visit! Very spread out

By SV0710 |

This University is great to visit, if in the area. Allow yourself time as the buildings are very spaced apart, and therefore will take a little longer to explore.

Best looking campus in the world is my vote

By Teammilitello |

Oh my goodness. Eye candy wherever we walked. If you love architecture, both new and old, this place will send you straight to heaven! I’ve been wanting to tour it for years (Thanks to Covid, you still can’t.), but even though you can’t enter the buildings, just walking the grounds gives you an excellent idea.

RIGHT DOWN THE STREET

By MIGLIACCIO1955 |

I have been working about 3 blocks to Yale University. The architecture is incredible, gothic unique. Yale is pretty big with the University and the Medical University part. Yale New Haven Hospital is also nearby. It is a really interesting place to visit in the courtyard. Very picturesque. Yale University is big and spreads out over New Haven. I have taken a lunch with me and ate lunch there on a nice day. There are a lot of restaurants multicultural. Parking is a little tricky in New Haven. Watch where you park. I walk right from work but if you drive, make sure the place you park is legal as the ticket person will be out.

Fascinating and very big area

By Jens F. |

You should take part in one of the public tours through the Yale campus. It's just only twice a day, but it's worth of it.

It starts with a very funny but professional video made by Yale students and alumnis at the visitor center.

Afterwards you'll be led through the different colleges and buildings at the campus. Sometimes, the architecture moves you back to the middle ages and you think you're living in a castle. On the other side, there're also very modern buildings. All in all, Yale has to offer a lot for students and the tour lead by students had fascinated me from the start until the end at the book store.

Honestly what is there to say, it's a stunning university

By CliveV - The Galloping Glutton. |

Yale is one of the Ivy League universities in the USA, and it's easy to see why.
The grounds are stunning, the main buildings are amazing architecture, and of course to get accepted is virtually impossible, but I have no doubt totally worth the effort

Yale Adventure

Beautiful campus and so exciting to see the library, what a magnivicent experience! The area is lovely to walk and also eat near the campus. Loved it!

Lovely!

By Katie C |

What a lovely campus! Take a stroll if you have a bit of time in the area, the buildings are absolutely beautiful!

Interesting....

By damiand10 |

A beautiful place with a historic background. Definitely worth a walkabout and be sure to hit many of the excellent eateries in the neighbourhood.

Some signage would help

By Vicky R |

Spent an afternoon wandering round New Haven which is full of history ( according to the friend I was visiting) but a distinct lack of signage meant that it isn’t evident. The Art muséum / gallery is worth a visit.

Yale University

By jwcorbett |

The Architecture and Craftsmanship of the buildings here are amazing. With the school starting in the early 1700s it still has the Past and the Present represented. A place any student would dream of going. You can do self guided or Guided tours here and the History is just amazing. Well worth the time.

Yale such a architectural beauty

By Missgege2 |

We took the visit with the university and it was such a good idea, we were speachless about the beauty of this university, library, park etc.

Visit to Yale

By prasan68 |

We visited Yale to check it out for our daughter! Needless to say we loved the place and it would be great if our daughter could be accepted there.

Beautiful

By Bri1711 |

Such a beautiful campus with so much history! So glad that my husband and I decided to take the store and just soak in all the history and sights of this beautiful college!

A legacy for all of time

By Andrew S |

How do you review a university? This Ivy League campus boasts some of the best planning and architectural works of any place in America. Colonial? Georgian? Brutalist? Modern? Gothic? Got them all, by some of the most notable architects of their times. Zig zag into the courtyards if you can, walk the streets, slip into little shops on Chapel street, get a bite to eat at any number of eateries. Yale, setting the standard for training some of the world's most influential leaders for over 300 years. The campus only complements that legacy.

Great introduction to the university

By C Nelly |

Went on a student led tour. Beautiful campus and lots of great information about Yale. If you like learning statistics and history about the university, this would be a good place to start. The student led tours are mostly outdoors and require quite a bit of walking around for the hour so be comfortable. Tour guides are very knowledgeable so ask questions! The tour ended at the Yale bookstore where you can purchase souvenirs or check out items in the Barnes and Noble type store.

Love this campus!

By Kristen T |

Each year we attend the Yale University High School Speech and Debate Tournament, and every year we have a wonderful time. The facilities are historic and beautiful. The only issue was that the chapel for awards was blistering hot. Otherwise, great visit.

Excellent University

By esse p |

Highly recommanded the free tour with a Yale student. It starts at 10.30 am with a 10-minute film in the visitor center and then the student takes you all around the university. The young guide was great.
Excellent University, one of the best on the world!

Compact and historical

By lakwatsera2014 |

It was a perfect summer day to go on foot for 5 hours (except for lunch). Wear comfortable shoes, it is an urban oasis

See photos of architecture, doors and yale-isms. Bikes. Gant shirts defined yale. Visitors center had a history of yale. Connecticut building. The old campus green.

Worth a day trip.

Beautiful Campus -- Spend The Day Exploring & Learning

By yesharvardsucks |

Very walkable campus, especially with former streets converted into pedestrian walkways. Spend the day sightseeing, taking in the beauty of the campus. Feel free to enter the library and have fun. There are many great restaurants and shops to visit to help when you are hungry or wish to take home a memento.

What an Amazing Insitution

By AMsays |

I was here for my son's commencement from the prestigious law school, postponed 2 years because of Covid-19. It was a highly emotional day full of pomp and ceremony commensurate with the auspicious day. The day was extremely well organized by the school and capped off with an excellent lunch for all who attended
The grounds of this fabled institution encompass historic buildings that have seen remarkable events and famous scholars pass through. I especially enjoyed the Beinecke Rare Book Library and Connecticut Hall on campus. What an amazing institution...!

What A Great Looking Campus!

By urbanguy |

...........exactly as I would expect an Ivy League campus to look. Great to walk around about the history and the historical figures that were on these grounds previously.

Classic college atmosphere

By GoAlong2 |

We were in town for a wedding and were able to drive through campus and walk through the green. We enjoyed the classic architecture and collegiate atmosphere.

Downtown Campus and heart of New Haven

By Joann G |

The campus of Yale is the heart of New Haven. These historic buildings are visual delights on the exterior, and many just breathtaking inside. Walking the streets in this part of New Haven is sightseeing - among the campus population, and grand architecture. There is history around every wrought iron gate, small cut-through lane and stained glass! Don't miss driving the streets in the evening just to glimpse the lighted interiors and stained glass.
It's a privilege to experience the surrounds of this Ivy League institution...truly American heritage.

Great Campus Great School

By Philip B |

Really an old town gem. Top school in the nation. Can't go wrong! The surrounding area could be better.

A place of greatness

By adi_pundak_mintz |

Yale is world famous.
It is focused on excellence, global affairs and for better or worse, dominates New Haven.

The campus is beautiful, the people smart, and new h en has a lot to offer as a small city.

Recommended day trip from NYC on MTA north

Parker says "Hogwarts of Connecticut."

By Parker Sturbridge |

This campus is right out of a movie...Harry Potter or otherwise. Rich collegiate gothic architecture abounds, with multiple quadrangles and walkways, etc. Roam around, the place is huge. And there are some Revolutionary era buildings at the core. Then take a stroll to the art gallery or some of the restaurants on Chapel Street. A beautiful campus.

Reminds me of Cambridge University

By margaretc007 |

Visiting the Yale campus brought back memories of my stay at Cambridge University. Many of the campus buildings had an English feel to it, but there were contemporary buildings as well, such as the Yale School of Architecture and especially, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The latter was closed by 5PM on a Friday afternoon, so we were not able to go inside to see the marvelous Vermont marble from the inside (as I was informed). But just walking around the campus and absorbing the ambiance of a great place of learning was wonderful. Don't miss Maya Lin's "The Women's Table" dedicated to the women of Yale University. It is placed right in front of the Stirling Memorial Library.

Inspiring

By ugh |

The campus is incredible. So pretty. Will make you regret every decision you have ever made that didn't bring you to attend Yale University.

Lovely campus

By Amelia Edwards |

I visited Yale for a recent competition. The campus is so detailed and intricate - like nothing I've ever seen. The only downside is that you're confined to a very limited area because if you go out of the campus you're in a very unsafe area.

A student guided tour is a great way to see the campus

By Lilacwheaty |

Inspired by other reviews, we went to the Visitor centre for a guided campus tour, and it was really enjoyable and very well done.

The students are all charming and seem to genuinely care about sharing the pleasures and beauty of the place

The introductory video is very well done, and our guide peppered the tour with some personal touches that made it all more interesting

Tours last about 75 mins, and move at a reasonable pace.
The start times are not entirely clear on website, so best to check first if you can.

As a grumpy middle aged man, I was impressed and inspired by the young people around us.

Beautiful campus!

By debashish_sarkar |

Beautiful campus, old architecture really appeals to you. We started our tour after visiting Yale art gallery which was good as well. Strolled through the old campus buildings with young life all around. High street then going through rose walk, we saw students coming in at start of session with parents who had come to see them off. Then, we visited law campus, serene and beautiful, it was so quiet. Then , we took a right on Grove street and walked through Hillhouse Ave, rows of old houses now converted into office buildings with trees on both sides, it is a must place to visit. While on the return, there was a local stage event going in new haven greens. Overall, we had a good time and a long walk.!

Nice Tour

By kcmooreiii |

The student run tours of Yale are nice enough, and you learn a bit about the history of Yale and surrounding area. I had only hope to see more ‘inside’ the beautiful buildings that we were walking by.

Memory Lane

By Teri N |

My husband and his brother attended Yale for undergrad, so while we were there in December, we took a stroll through the history and stately campus. I was in awe of the ornate architecture and iron gates. Little did I know that Yale sits right in the center of town, as if the town grew around the campus.

Magnificent Architecture

By Wanderlust |

We visited the Yale Campus and did a walking tour. The architecture of the buildings is magnificent. Every building bore something interesting to see and every quad had something different. Definitely a walk through history.

Stunning place to learn

By Tony S |

Yale University is simply stunning. The buildings and the grounds are very well maintained and the history surrounding the place is amazing.

Historical University

By Hsin-Yi W |

Yale University is one of the top universities in the world especially in Humanities, Art and Law with a beautiful campus.

Most buildings are outmoded and historical since Yale University was founded in 1701, it is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States.

The only complaint I have is the bad traffic around the campus that we couldn’t feel relaxed while walking around the neighborhood.

my fifth favorite ivy school

By Walt B |

im elm city born and bred ( st raphael, NOT yale). this $25billion cadre of self anointed corporate banditos in the guise of a school hires thousands of locals and pays them just enough to keep them poor while dumping their selfish self involved students into our streets overrunning our infrastructure (which is crumbling because yale owns the most valuable land in the city- and beyond - and pays no tax on the properties.
I know this may cloudthe definition of a review, but a true review isnt just about the pretty things and the museums they allow us access to (bread and circus). reviews should be critical as well as containing praise where its appropriate.
The now decrepid yale bowl is a holy place to me where I spent the 70's and very early 80's walking down alden ave on crisp fall Saturdays with my dad being outside watching mediocrefootall and bonding and just being. the giant squid in the Peabody museum still excites me, and the school brings world leaders and great thinkers to southern Connecticut. but we local yokles always knew our place. we gave up parking spots affordable apartments and the right to freely roam about a good third of our city center to our tweed clad overloards.
yale is good school, but a horrible neighbor/landlord / power. and they dont care.
I cant get their students to look when crossing busy intersections or make an attempt to get to know and respect those of us who make their 4 year luxury tour of our home, but I can sure as hell call attention to their true corporate self serving culture.

thanks for the cool dinosaurs and crappy sports teams, but id rather just goto NYC and leave new haven to the new haveners. boola boola

Return as Alumnus

By Jody G |

The campus is looking better than ever as many improvements have been made. There is so much to see, but if you have time stop in to see Sterling Library on High Street, any of the wonderful museums and the bookstore on Broadway (where there are a variety of nice shops). Check the website for details.

Historic campus worth checking out

By Brittany_11_10 |

If you don't sign up for a group tour, the most you can do is walk around and look at the architecture (and see what kids paying insane tuition prices are up to on the quad, like playing Frisbee, hula hooping, and twirling batons--no joke). Still, it's worth checking out if you're in the area. The architecture is beautiful, and it's fun to see some of the older buildings and one of the older campuses in the US.

Finding metered parking on a street a few blocks away wasn't hard, at least not on a Saturday afternoon. Perhaps it'd be different on a weekday.

Charming people, breath-takingly beautiful campus

By Vastvedt |

I was fortunate enough to visit Yale campus for the first time and I was taken with how nice the people are here. They are intensely passionate about what they do and have a charming sense of humor which can be seen in the details of the surroundings. Wish I could have stayed longer

Beautiful canpus

By drlisat |

We went to the information session and campus tour and both were very informative and interesting. The tour went to two libraries and talked about the history of the architecture as well as the collection of rare books. The residential colleges are so neat, like a community within the campus. A very fun day.

Visit to Yale is a must if you visit connecticut

By 266mps |

I was in a visit to Yale with my 14 year old daughter who participated in the World Scholars Cup. While my daughter was spending her time participating in her tournament, I was visiting the university on my own as well as on a guided tour by one of Yale students.

The guided tours of one hour are free for anyone to join. Most of us who were on the tour tipped the student who conducted the tour.

I highly recommend these tours as it provides you with a bit of history and also a bit about student life.

Overall, you will feel proud to have visited a place which contributed so much to the future of the world.

Not what I expected

By drkaren2001 |

For anyone that has been to the University of Michigan......it is like Michigan with Harry Potter like buildings. Beautiful buildings within a city. The park we walked through at night seemed sketchy. This was confirmed by a nearby store owner that said that they close at 8 pm and get out.....claiming that "you don't want to be in that park at night! There are some shady dealings that go on". During the day it seemed fine. There are homeless people and beggars scattered about. But I did see many police officers too. I only felt unsafe at night.

Wonderful Tour

By TheSuze12 |

I take the tour every year with my students. I have never been disappointed and each year I learn something new about this gorgeous campus. Go to the visitor center and check out this wonderful tour. It takes about an hour.

Beautiful architecture!

By Florida Peggy |

A great walk on a beautiful campus. It’s fairly compact and full of beautiful buildings...especially Harkness Hall.

The Ivy Just Drips off the Buildings

By Professor S |

We did an informal tour of some of the Ivy League schools and struggled to put a finger on what makes each campus unique. Just comparing Yale and Harvard, Yale seemed a little more urbane, a little cleaner, and a little more disjointed (as in seeming like the melding of New Haven and Yale was hard to distinguish). Great architecture, wonderful history, interesting sights.

Most beautiful university

By only1kirk |

Yale has to be the most beautiful university. Its castle style look really sets it apart. I was most impressed by the student who was the docent of the visitors center. It was a very rainy day and we arrived soaked to the bone. The docent was pleasant and helpful. He directed us to places to visit on a rainy day. The visitors center appears to be a historic building and is decorated in that manner. It is also wheelchair friendly.

Beautiful building and grounds

By Dutchie33 |

We did the free guided walking tour of the Yale campus. Our tour guide Lewis was awesome and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

The buildings are absolutely beautiful so even if you learn nothing it's a nice way to spend an hour walking around the campus.

There is street parking by the Visitor Center which has a 2 hour maximum. We had arrived early so didn't want to take a chance that we would be longer than the 2 hours. We parked in the city parking garage that is under City Hall. The rate for 3 hours was $11.00 and no fear of our car being towed if we didn't make it back on time.

The tour ends in the Yale books store which is on the same street that the visitor center is on so it was easy to find our way back to our car.

If have time it's a beautiful area to just walk around

Beautiful Ivy Campus

By BoxingLawyer |

Yale is a very beautiful campus in the traditional Ivy League sense, a lot of history and very nice architecture. The original quad on "Old Campus" is very nice and the Sterling Library is impressive.

Great architecture and wonderful museums

By Carlos G |

Plenty of activities for all including several museums, art galleries and tours of Yale. There is a British and Modern art museum as well as a Natural History museum.

A pleasant walk

By PeteyP |

Beautiful campus, quite a lot to see with the surrounding art galleries, plenty of food options surround the campus, great place to walk around and take in the architecture.

Yale

By John B |

For 30 years, since I moved East, I thought of Yale as too imposing, too posh. Not long ago I was staying in New Haven for a month and a friend said I could get a library card at Yale as a professor from another college. I asked and they said yes. I'm grateful. It's a cool library and the people who run it aren't stuffy at all. Still, the walled campus is a bit much so I'll have to revisit this post.

You don't have to study here...

By LaVa Touristik |

…..to feel comfortable here.

Yale University is one of the most prestigious universities in the world, the third oldest university in the United States and you can see that in these beautiful buildings - you should visit it.

Mesmerisingly enchanting!

By Twesha D |

I am a prospective student at Yale and recently got the opportunity to visit the campus. I instantly fell in love with the campus, the buildings and especially the libraries. I don’t think you could find a better campus to live on.

Tennis!!

By Traveler2AM |

I went for the first time to the Connecticut Open Tennis Tournament at Yale University and had a very good time. It is a very manageable facility so one can easily learn where the practice courts are in relation to the stadium. The buffet in the air conditioned area was very good but on the expensive side. There are kiosks for food, clothing, etc.

Parking is reasonable.

Next year I will go again.

Not just a campus

By cdb1006 |

Just walking on the grounds of the university makes you feel special. The buildings are beautiful and you need to stop to appreciate the detail. The chimes at 7 pm we heard took you to a different world. Spend some time learning about the various statues!

Ivy-ish campus!

By YantiKiwi |

I love the architecture of the buildings on this campus. The campus has various facilities catered to the visitors, from the Visitor Center, cafes, restaurants, clothing shops, and others. I recommended the tourist to go for their Visitor tour at the Visitor Center, and you are entitled to 15% discount at the Yale Bookshop.

Beautiful campus

By Malene K |

If you find yourself nearby New Haven, go to see Yale's campus! There're free tours twice daily, and a lot of the museums and galleries are free as well. It's a beautiful and extraordinary campus!

First visit to Yale Campus to tour their museums

By Rosalea M |

Visited Yale Campus in late Aug. with friends. We toured the Art Museum and the Natural History Museum. Both of them were spectacular!! Beautiful buildings and helpful staff. The exhibits were top of the line and well done. I would highly recommend.

Great campus setting. Classic buildings.

Check out the Payne Whitney Athletic Facility. An older classic building which was way ahead of its tim. Also the Yale Golf Course is a must see/play if you golf. Art musuem and Woolsey Hall for theatre/musical events.

I visited this university on behalf my daughter.

By Krish_Chicago |

I visited this town and University just to get a feeling of an Ivy League School. My daughter keeps talking about all Ivy Leagues for her college dream and wanted to see how exactly this University is. Campus is beautiful and town looks nice. I am not qualified to talk about their education..

Beautiful campus

By Jake23 |

Yale is a beautiful college built within the city. Walk around and see the stunning architecture of the old campus. It’s right next to the New Haven Green as well.

Enjoy a walk through the open campus of a top university

By Harry R |

Yale is one of the Ivy League universities. Although it was Founded over 350 years ago Yale has kept up with the times. The new residential colleges are surprisingly built in a style consistent with the older buildings

Beautiful campus

By tnvol93 |

Stopped by here on a tour of the Northeast. the campus is tucked into the middle of the city, but the architecture of the buildings was beautiful.

Stunningly beautiful campus

By RK |

Really enjoyed the walk through campus despite being here at a time when there are no tours due to the pandemic. Super pretty!

Beautiful Campus!

By AshBernadette88 |

Deciding to take advantage of the nice fall weather, my husband and I took a stroll through campus, and we were very impressed with the beautiful architecture! The atmosphere was very collegiate and very picaresque with the late-fall leaves clinging to tree branches.

We'd like to take a tour next time we visit!

Beautiful campus

By Viknd |

3rd oldest university in the country and you can see it in beautiful architecture and classic buildings. Exceptional athletic facilities (Yale Bowl at different location 1.5 miles away) as well

Lots' to see in New Haven

By nkp |

Don't miss the British Art Center and the Yale Art Museum. They are both free and recently, beautifully renovated. BAC has a wonderful gift shop. Also, Peabody Museum with it's dinosaurs is great for kids.
Take a free and funny tour led by Yalies. No in museum cafes but Atticus on Chapel is good.

Too bad it’s in New Haven

By Traveler98769876 |

A spectacular college campus. It’s too bad it’s located in New Haven, CT. New Haven is one of the most dangerous cities in the US.

Beautiful architecture!

By Cathy S |

We walked around on a Sunday afternoon on our own. If you want access to more places take the free tour led by a student. If you like to go your own way the campus is easy to explore but huge! We only went in two buildings: the art Museum and the Beineke Library. Feels like your in Europe looking at the buildings.

Amazing. Simply amazing

By Alice Y |

God, Yale was beautiful. Went there for a summer program and absolutely fell in love with the campus. The buildings are so gothic and medieval, and the campus is actually integrated within the city, so all you need to do is step a few metres out of your college, and you're in a city. The Sterling Library and Science Hill were my favourites.

Walk around the campus with a collegue

By Keith G. |

My collegue was traveling home to New Jersey after being in Boston and we decided to catch up in New Haven. He was surprised (being he is from England) to learn that Yale is the heart of New Haven. I decided to take him on a tour of the campus and he was impressed. We toured as much as possible (security was perfect around campus) and he was amazed at the size but it was the architecture that was awsome (his words).

If you are around New Have is a must to see

By fcortina |

Otherwise, you will find typical American Gothic 1890-1930´s buildings the whole city is the different buildings of Yale. A must see is the old books library, that is something and if you are there you must stop by. People very friendly and helpful

Stunning University

By DaisyO2014 |

We were so lucky to be able to spend some time at Yale University as our daughter was attending a academic competition there for the week.

We had a tour of the grounds which was excellent.

In addition we got to have a lunch in the dining hall!

Bigger than I expected!

By wgomez28 |

We went to Connecticut specifically to visit Yale University. It was spread out through out the town which we were not expecting, the town is very pretty & home like. Some great stores around the town but overall it was not quite everything I was expecting!
I wish we would've went to Harvard too to compare both.

Guide Tour is recommended!

By Chris L |

Plan to show up at least 15 minutes early to watch the video in the Visitor Center. It was a little hokey, but as a senior citizen, I'm not the targeted audience. We were led on a walking tour of Old College by an energetic sophomore. She was well-informed about the historic buildings and school history. Of particular interest was her description of why students choose to attend Yale -- she liked the fact that she was among very bright individuals who don't have big egos. Good reason!
At the end of the tour, you're near the Yale Bookstore, so if you have time, it's a fun stop. Walking tour itself is one hour, so allow up to two hours for your parking meter payment. The questions below aren't really appropriate for this "attraction" but don't get me wrong, I think it's worth it. And free!

Amazing campus

Amazing structure and magnificent campus. Easy to understand why Yale is one of the best universities in the world.

WOW

By Rachel C |

Only walked around for about an hour as we were on a schedule to go home, but what we saw of the campus was absolutely beautiful and impressive. Lovely mixture of old and new in architecture!

Beautiful, historic campus, informed tour of history and student life

By Hale F |

While several parents and children obviously hoping to get into this prestigious school were along for the tour, the tour provides information for those folks as well as a history and character of the institution. The buildings are magnificent and the recent grad who gave us a tour bright and enthusiastic. The video gives you a glimpse of the academic and the tour informs about the student life, history and architecture. The library was fascinating particularly the features regarding Yale's graduates. I wish I had had time for the art museum. The tour guide could not explain what boola boola (the Yale Cheer) meant. however. Some things cannot be explained even at a prestigious University.

Massive modern campus but the old buildings are best

By KIERAN P |

The Yale campus covers a large part of New Haven Connecticut but you can cover a lot of it walking.I particularly liked the very old residential buildings. Really beautiful buildings with enclosed courtyards reminiscent of the old colleges in Oxford,UK.

Awestruck

By Dale R |

The campus is virtually the heart of downtown and most common areas on campus are pedestrian friendly. The buildings and history of Yale are amazing. We watched a video in the welcome center that was produced by Yale students on Why they chose Yale....a musical like LaLa land, it was great.

Fun to visit

By Fearless11094205871 |

We walked around campus and hit the shops. Cool buildings. Great feeling. Beautiful architecture and grounds.

Must see!

By Aimee H |

Visited the Peabody museum and ate the famous Pepe’s pizza (that’s a whole other review). I had my two children 4 and 7. They did pretty good but I had to cut short the walking tour. I could have strolled around Yale area for hours just admiring the architecture but little legs can only go so far. I recommend a day here just strolling and admiring. Truly a beautiful city.

Just touring the campus

By jeanjacquespsaute |

The campus looks great. I enjoyed looking at the different buildings and it was great taking a walk through the campus.

Open to the community

By Double "Ollie" Winner |

My opinion of this place is relative to similar institutions and differs from the majority. Having chased by ball-player around the Ivy League, this place felt the most unsafe due to its open connection to the city and the proximity of neighborhoods that don't feel so nice.

Great tour!

By Deb M |

The Yale student who led our tour was a delightful sophomore with an obvious love of the university. The campus is beautiful and learning some of the history was fascinating.

beautiful

very nice place to visit. take the guided tour of the university/ see all the important places.
try the blue state coffee place.

Get a guide (student)

Walk around and be inspired by a resident student telling much about this university. Yes, they have a gift shop :)

It's not about the center campus

By H2NY2 |

Yale University, as a campus, is okay. It's hard to get over the fact that it's not a European medieval monastery. It certainly tries to create that impression. For all of its competition with Oxford, the campus makes me think of Oxford, the real thing. So, sorry. Still, it's worth seeing if for no other reason than to enjoy the architecture anyway. It's nice.

Tour guide needed to speak slower

By AndyP1998 |

Make sure you get there 15 mins before the tour to watch the introductory film. Very enjoyable. Tour guide admitted at the start she spoke quickly. Ok for us because we were english. Some Europeans on the tour asked her to speak slower. She did for about a minute. Lol. The tour was more about her experience of being a Yale student along with showing some lovely buildings rather than being a historic tour. As such we enjoyed the tour but it won't appeal to everybody.

You can feel the history in the architecture

By Mark H |

One of the best places to wander around and experience one of the great Universities with its spectacular Gothic architecture. The campus is spread out over the center of New Haven with its residential college buildings, museums, parks and courtyards. A "must see" in the Fall when the leaves are turning all over campus, and one of our favorite walks in the snow in the Winter, as well as the Spring bloom. If you are a first-timer to Yale, consider taking one of the University walking tours, and don't miss the Peabody Museum, and the Modern Art Museum. Mory's Association is a great place to eat lunch and experience what and an Ivy League Club would feel like with its wood paneled walls covered with pictures of various college athletes, to its historic wood tables where people have carved their initials for over a century - another window into the past at Yale

Beautiful campus

By 12359peeksd |

We visited on a Sunday early afternoon. Unfortunately, the old campus was closed for an event, but a nice young man provided a map and suggested a route for us to see other parts of the campus. The architecture is beautiful! We parked on a meter (free on Sundays) at the corner of Church and Elm Streets and walked through the New Haven Green to get to the old campus. There were some sketchy groups of folks in the green which made us a little uncomfortable -- we returned to our car along the streets.

Good Insight to History & Buildings

By Scott B |

Tour went through the old sections of campus, buildings and explained a lot about the history and layout The old books collection library was really nice to hear about, only wish it would have been sunny the day we visited so we could see it light up from the inside. Overall the tour was informative, but our tour guide was a little chatty but you could see his enthusiasm about the school, campus and city. We took a baby in a stroller along and were able to navigate fine except into the aforementioned library.
