Jimei Aoyuan

Aoyuan is located in Jimei Academy Village. It was originally a small island, shaped like a turtle, hence the name Aoyuan.
There is a small temple on the island, called Aotou Palace, also known as Qianli Palace, which was destroyed by the Japanese army during the Anti-Japanese War.
In 1950, Mr. Tan Kah Kee expanded the island into the current Ao Garden on the ruins. Ao Garden consists of the porch, Jimei Liberation Monument and Tan Kah Kee's Tomb.
The numerous sculptures in the park are the soul treasures of Fujian stone carving art. The figures are in various poses and vivid images, and can express various expressions of joy, anger, sadness and happiness.

I have known the story of Jimei University and Tan Kah Kee before. Mr. Tan was a local who grew up here. Under his care, this land remained a peaceful place during the years of warlords. Today, the lush campus is dotted with various traditional buildings. The Tan Kah Kee spirit created it and must have taken root and been passed down to future generations.

After entering the Tan Kah Kee Park, I found that Ao Garden and Tan Kah Kee Park are connected. Ao Garden is on the right, and the Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall is on the left. If you go straight, you will reach the sea.

Tan Kah Kee's family was well-off when he was young. His father was a businessman in Singapore, but his investment failed and he owed a huge amount of foreign debt. In a blink of an eye, Tan Kah Kee went from being a "rich second generation" to a "poor second generation".

Tan Kah Kee showed rare calmness and extraordinary business talent, borrowed 7,000 dollars to open a canning factory. He found that Europeans were very interested in pineapples, but fresh pineapples were difficult to transport over long distances, and the newly emerging canning technology solved this problem. With the canning business, he paid off his debts and earned his first pot of gold.

When World War I broke out, the canned food export business was not doing well. Tan Kah Kee discovered a new business opportunity. The US economy began to take off, and the demand for rubber products surged. So he first bought a large piece of land to grow rubber, and then set up factories to produce rubber shoes, tires and other rubber products. The rubber business spread to many cities around the world.

Although Tan Kah Kee's business was large, he could only be considered a businessman, not a wealthy man. Because he donated most of his money to running schools, the amount of education funds he donated throughout his life is estimated to be equivalent to about 100 million US dollars. This was an astronomical figure at the time. Even in the later period, due to the global economic crisis, the company was seriously unable to make ends meet, but he still did not give up running schools and sold a large number of properties to maintain the normal operation of Xiamen University and Jimei School Village.

After reading about Tan Kah Kee’s life, I instantly understood why he meant so much to Xiamen.

Jimei Aoyuan is located on the southeast corner of Jimei Art Village in Jimei District, Xiamen. Aoyuan consists of three parts: the porch, the Jimei Liberation Monument and the Tomb of Mr. Tan Kah Kee. Entering the garden is a 50-meter-long porch. On the walls of both sides are engraved 40 bluestone reliefs of ancient and modern historical figures, three-dimensional serial statues, many of which are vivid and varied. Various expressions of joy, anger, decline and happiness can be carved. The unfurled red flag is as thin as a piece of paper, and the raised weapons are as thin as pens and chopsticks. It is a miracle of human ingenuity.

The memorial hall is magnificent and the square dance is joyful.

Aoyuan can be seen as a holy place with the tomb of Tan Kah Kee as its core. It can be reached by walking from the park. There is also a Liberation Monument inside. I haven't learned about its construction process in detail, but I just think the feng shui is very good.

According to Feng Shui, this is definitely a treasure land, and now it is the site of Tan Kah Kee's mausoleum. Whether it is the construction of the turtle-shaped mausoleum or the 12 stone carvings beside the tomb, they are all worth studying one by one.

As you enter Ao Garden, what catches your eye are exquisite stone carvings, which depict both modern China's revolutionary history and traditional opera scenes, all of which are classic scenes from ancient times to the present.

Aoyuan is the tomb of Mr. Tan Kah Kee. It is backed by the sea, with a large park and pleasant scenery. Unfortunately, the memorial hall is closed on Mondays.

It's just a small park, nothing special, not recommended.

As soon as I entered the door, I saw a Chinese-style veranda, which was transparent in all directions and had very special colors. Aoyuan was built by the sea, and an idle dragon boat on the shore gave me the opportunity to get close to it and explore the construction of a traditional dragon boat. The dragon head was brightly colored and majestic, and I loved it so much that I couldn't let go.

Fujian's dragon boats also have a history of thousands of years and are well-known. The boats, oars and rudders of Fujian's dragon boats are all made of fir wood, which is quite exquisite. The bow is equipped with a wooden dragon head, and the hull is painted with colorful scales, but judging from the length of the boat, the number of paddlers will not be less than 30.

In the center of the north side is the tomb of Mr. Tan Kah Kee and the Jimei Liberation Monument. In his later years, Mr. Tan Kah Kee devoted almost all his energy to the construction of his hometown Jimei. In order to fulfill Mr. Tan Kah Kee's last wish, the north side of Aoyuan was opened up as a park. The park is full of pavilions and towers of different heights, which is a reflection of the combination of Chinese and Western styles.

Jimei Aoyuan is the tomb of Mr. Tan Kah Kee. Aoyuan is a small island. It was named Aoyuan because it looks like a turtle. The road leading to Aoyuan was built later. Coming here will make you feel inexplicably peaceful. Born in such a turbulent era, it is really admirable to be able to achieve such success! Compared with him, everything you encounter becomes a trivial matter. Be a little stronger and everything will be solved.

By Wu Li |

The overall style is grand and spectacular. Some details are also very attractive. There are vivid reliefs on the walls of Ao Garden, all of which are famous allusions in Chinese history. In addition, there are simple animal drawings on the pillars by the sea, which are very interesting and just within the visual range of children, which can help children learn cognition.

By Average NWA |

Aoyuan displays the tomb of Mr. Tan Kah Kee (earth burial) and the Jimei Liberation Monument. What is quite shocking here is the large number of reliefs. The content of the carvings is actually an encyclopedia, ranging from all things in the world to historical events, which contains Mr. Kah Kee’s educational thought of "teaching through travel".

Jimei Aoyuan is located in the Jiageng Park, that is, a park within a park - Aoyuan; this Aoyuan used to be a small island. Now there is the Xiamen Liberation Monument and Tan Kah Kee's tomb inside. From the outside, this Aoyuan looks like a peninsula, but in fact it used to be a small island. Later, it was filled with soil to form the shape of today's peninsula;

By close |

It is divided into three parts: Aoyuan porch, Jimei Liberation Monument and Mr. Tan Kah Kee's mausoleum. Kah Kee Park is located in the north of Jimei Aoyuan, and the gate is connected to Aoyuan. It was built by later generations to commemorate Mr. Tan Kah Kee's founding of education, cultivating talents and benefiting the society.

These are all scenic spots near the Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall. They should be very beautiful if the weather is clear and the air is good.

The most beautiful route to Aoyuan is to walk along the edge of the pond. There is a grand dragon boat race every Dragon Boat Festival. The pond is very large, and there is not much water in the pond in winter. You can see it when you get off the bus.

The tour guide said that "the stones in Aoyuan can speak". When you enter Aoyuan, you will see bluestone carvings of ancient and modern Chinese history on both sides of the porch. Each stone represents a period of history. Looking up, you can see the Jimei Liberation Monument towering into the sky. Mr. Li's tomb is located just south of the Jimei Liberation Monument. The coffin is in the shape of a tortoise shell, with only the tortoise body but no tortoise head. The tour guide said that Mr. Li was very low-key during his lifetime and did not like to show off, so his coffin will not have a tortoise head a hundred years later.

Mr. Tan Kah Kee is sleeping here. The architecture is very characteristic of the southern Fujian region, and the stone carvings are also very exquisite! If you have enough time to visit Jimei, Aoyuan must be an essential stop!

Next to Tan Kah Kee's former residence is Ao Garden, where Mr. Tan Kah Kee rests. There is a dragon boat pond in front of Ao Garden, and a hero memorial tower in Ao Garden. When the Communist Party liberated Xiamen and Jimei, considering that there were many school buildings in these two places, they gave up artillery attacks. It is conceivable that without the cover of artillery fire, many People's Liberation Army soldiers died here. In order to commemorate these sacrificed PLA soldiers, the local people erected this monument in this place by the sea to commemorate them.

The most special thing in Ao Garden is the "Bowuguan". There is a handicraft in southern Fujian called "stone carving", which is a craft in which women in southern Fujian use tools such as awls to carve on stone slabs one stitch at a time. In Ao Garden, all the walls and fences are carved in this way with various flowers, birds, fish, insects, daily necessities, mountains and rivers of the motherland, customs and habits, etc., covering almost all categories. No wonder this place is named "Bowuguan". Among them, there are carvings of some famous domestic attractions, which are probably carved more finely and have collection value, so they are protected by glass.

You can go to Tan Kah Kee's former residence, Guilai Hall and Guilai Garden. In addition, the Aoyuan in Jiageng Park is divided into three parts: the porch, Jimei Liberation Monument and Mr. Tan Kah Kee's Mausoleum. The 50-meter-long porch inside has 58 bluestone reliefs of ancient and modern historical figures engraved on the walls of both sides. It records important historical events in ancient and modern China. On one side is ancient, and on the other side is modern. The stone carvings are very delicate, and it is really ingenious! Going further, you will reach the Jimei Liberation Monument. The stone railings of the monument are engraved with various rare birds, monsters and exotic flowers and plants. Together with the screen wall and Tan Kah Kee's Mausoleum, it is said to be a Feng Shui treasure land! After arriving at the monument, the stone carvings on it are full of historical events, and there is a sacred beast at every fence point. Aoyuan is my favorite place in Jimei Academy Village, or more precisely, Aoyuan District, because the memorial hall is next to Aoyuan. Mr. Tan Kah Kee's ashes are buried here. It faces the sea on both sides, with a wide view. There are traces of the original fishermen's life at the entrance. The white-tiled and red-pillared building in Aoyuan is really photogenic, clean and refreshing. From here you can see the bridge in the distance (I forgot what it was called). It's worth a visit, recommended!

Jimei Art Village and Aoyuan are mainly connected with Tan Kah Kee, the national hero who saved the country through industry. Jimei is more like a history lesson for me, writing the picture of war and rise experienced by the people of Xiamen.

The most worth seeing is Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s mausoleum - Aoyuan.

On the inner side of the walls surrounding Aoyuan are groups of stone carvings, which together with the stone carvings around the porch in the garden, the tomb of Jiageng and the monument form a stone carving museum. These stone carvings are the essence of Aoyuan.

The carvings in Jimei Aoyuan are extremely delicate, and the historical records are quite detailed. Not only can we learn about Mr. Jiageng's life and revolutionary trajectory, but also all major events and historical allusions in China's 5,000 years are included. This also fully reflects Jiageng's life philosophy of popularizing knowledge and attaching importance to education.

It is a very worthwhile place to go. The place is not big. My personal suggestion is to go early in the morning. There are basically no tourists if you go early. I guess I was the first tourist that day. The people I saw in Aoyuan were basically staff members. Aoyuan was built on the seaside. It can be said that one side is next to the sea and the other side is land. You need to buy a ticket to enter Jimei Aoyuan. At that time, I went directly to buy a ticket and entered. There were already staff selling tickets there early. I don’t remember it very clearly. I guess I had bought a ticket before 8 o’clock. In fact, you can also buy a joint ticket, which includes Jiageng Park, Aoyuan and Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s former residence. When you go to Xiamen, I personally suggest that it is necessary to arrange two days to visit Jimei to visit Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s contribution to the motherland. Moreover, it is basically calm in Jimei, unlike Gulangyu where there are so many tourists that they walk shoulder to shoulder. In Jimei, there is more of a quiet and peaceful feeling, missing old friends. If you want to stop and quietly enjoy the scenery and miss old friends, then come to Jimei.

By Peace of mind |

I went to Aoyuan in Jimei, Xiamen after the Chinese New Year in 2011. The ticket was included in the tour fee. The scenery was beautiful, the stone sculptures were exquisitely carved and of great significance.

By maya |

When revisiting the old place, my father was very excited. He said that the large buildings here have basically not changed. They were all built with money from Tan Kah Kee and are still in use. The quality is indeed good!

By Fruit Salad |

The iconic monument of Aoyuan is very ordinary, but the carvings on the stone walls around the square are amazing, with all kinds of plants, animals, events, legends, folk stories, and so on. There should be no duplicates in the whole square. The carving techniques are also different, with three-dimensional, flat, relief and sunken carvings, which is amazing.

By Coobi |

Mr. Tan Kah Kee's mausoleum is a patriotic overseas Chinese who returned to China to run industries and education. It is truly admirable.

By Xue Wenhan Cash |

Jimei is separated from Xiamen by the Jimei Bridge, a very long cross-sea bridge. Because of this bridge, the two places have different feelings. Jimei is like a beautiful village girl, while Xiamen is more like a young man dressed in fashion. When you enter Jimei, you will find a strong overseas Chinese culture that has been implanted into the entire Jimei culture. Jimei University Village has universities, high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools. You will see schools after walking a few steps. The schools are very simple with gorgeous concepts.

Due to the sultry weather, few people come to Aoyuan. The ticket is 30 yuan per ticket, which is a pass that includes Tan Kah Kee Square, Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall and Jiefangbei. The park covers an area of 100,000 hectares. There are various trees with unique shapes in the park, and the air is fresh and clean.

Anyone who is interested in Tan Kah Kee must come here to visit. There are many exhibits here, and very advanced technology is used, such as a group of wax figures. As long as you approach them within the sensor range, the wax figures will make sounds and tell their stories. You can also see the projection room, what the projection room used to look like, with rows of large wooden chairs, and watch the life of Tan Kah Kee.
