The most famous attractions in Jiayuguan are Jiayuguan Pass and the Ming Great Wall and its westernmost starting point. Visit the pass in the off-season and take a slow walk. In this frontier where wars are often fought, the Confucian Temple is taller than the Martial Temple, because the court still values literature, so civil officials can often influence the life-and-death battle situation on the front line with just their words in the comfortable rear.

I was stunned. How could the city look like this from the city wall? Chimneys were everywhere, and black smoke columns were rising into the sky. The already rainy sky was even more gray and chaotic. Suddenly, I felt like I was in the apocalyptic city in "Blade Runner". I heard it was a power station?

This city looks empty now, but it is actually a city that has survived countless bloody battles throughout history and still stands tall. I feel awe when I look at the bricks.

It takes 2 to 3 hours to visit Jiayuguan. Here you can see the magnificent might of the Great Wall and hear the poignant love story of the chirping of the swallows. Outside the pass, there are also some activities such as archery, camel riding and off-road vehicles. If you stay overnight in Jiayuguan City, you may want to go to Jingtie Market to taste the local delicacies.

The only thing you can see at Jiayuguan Pass is the pass. There are three layers from the inside to the outside. How can you miss Jiayuguan after visiting Shanhaiguan? In the Ming Dynasty, going out of Jiayuguan meant going abroad. You needed to hold a pass disc like Tang Seng, which is equivalent to a passport today. The lonely and ancient pass standing in the desolate frontier in the photos on the Internet is the promotional photo of Jiayuguan, which is completely different from the style of the old dragon head of Shanhaiguan, which built the Great Wall into the sea.

Jiayuguan, which has been newly restored and opened as a scenic spot, the busy craftsmen and the annoying smell of paint, can't make people feel the heavy sense of time. Although, Jiayuguan in the morning sun looks majestic and desolate. Standing on the wall of Guancheng, overlooking the vast land under the blue sky, to the east is the beautiful Jiayuguan city, to the south is the winding Qilian Snow Mountain, to the west is the vast desert Gobi, and to the north is the scorching Black Mountain. Vaguely, it seems that you can still hear the sound of horse hooves, and you can still imagine the majestic momentum of Jiayuguan in the past. Walking from the Guancheng scenic area to the exit, the scenic area actually set up circles and circles of stalls, some selling food, some selling counterfeit antiques, and some selling various MADE IN YIWU tourist souvenirs. Do you want to take a shortcut? No way! You have to line up and walk around like you are visiting the World Expo pavilion! I have never seen a more vicious commercial setting than the exit of Jiayuguan Pass Scenic Area!

Once you enter the scenic area, you need to buy a ticket and take the shuttle bus just like in most scenic spots. However, I have been to Jiayuguan before and know that the gate of the scenic area is not far from the scenic spot. It only takes about ten minutes to walk there. It’s just a bit troublesome to have to check the ticket again.

Jiayuguan City is actually not a pass, but just a small city built on the road in the Gobi Desert. Looking around from the city, on one side is the Gobi Desert extending all the way to the distant Qilian Mountains, and on the other side is the tree-lined Jiayuguan City. It is famous mainly because it was an important dividing line on the Silk Road at that time. Its geographical location is more important than its scenic spot.

There are electric cars for rent as soon as you enter the scenic area. I thought the scenic area was very large, so I rented one and found that it was just a circle around the lake. There is parking at the entrance of the scenic spot.

Later we found that it was completely possible to walk around the scenic area. We suggest not to rent a bicycle as it is a bit of a rip-off. Riding a bicycle is too cold. You can walk to the city gate.

Arriving at Jiayuguan in the early morning, the temperature was so low that I didn't want to take my hands out of my pockets. The northwest wind blew on my face and it hurt. From afar, the city of Jiayuguan was shining in the morning sun, and it looked even more majestic. Walking in Jiayuguan, one can't help but think of the bustle and prosperity of the ancient Silk Road. A hundred meters outside the west gate of the pass, there is a stone tablet with the words "The Greatest Pass in the World" erected in the Qing Dynasty.

Jiayuguan Pass is undoubtedly the iconic building of the Great Wall. The construction of the pass is very scientific, integrating defense and offense. It is located in the westernmost section of the Great Wall and is a very important military pass.

The city wall is trapezoidal in plan, with a total length of 733 meters and a height of 11.7 meters. Now (July 2021), Jiayuguan-The First Pier of the Great Wall-The Cantilever Great Wall has launched a scenic shuttle bus, 10 yuan per time, the car is very clean, there are many buses, and the last bus returns to the pass at 18:30; basically, it is full and the waiting time is no more than ten minutes, which is really suitable! The First Pier of the Great Wall-The Cantilever Great Wall is also this shuttle bus, 10 yuan. Therefore, if you want to go to three attractions, it only costs 30 yuan for the fare, which is very cost-effective! After so many years, the Jiayuguan Scenic Area has finally launched a scenic shuttle bus. I hope more tourists can know this news!

There are two gates in the inner city of the pass, the east gate is Guanghua Gate, and the west gate is Rouyuan Gate. There is a Wengcheng on each gate for protection. There is a Luocheng outside the west gate, which is connected to the north and south walls of the outer city. There is Jiayuguan Gate leading to the outside of the pass, and Jiayuguan Tower is built on it. There are 14 arrow towers, enemy towers, corner towers, attics, and gate towers on the inner wall of Jiayuguan. There are guerrilla generals' mansions, well pavilions, and Wenchang Pavilion in the pass. There are Guandi Temple, archways, theaters, etc. outside the east gate. The entire building layout is exquisite and majestic.

It was quite boring, definitely not as good as expected, and the ticket price was not worth it. In comparison, it was not as interesting as the Xi'an City Wall, but the ticket price was twice as much. But Jiayuguan is a must-visit from a historical perspective, and they are taking advantage of this mentality so they charge a sky-high price.

There is no need to take the sightseeing bus in this scenic area unless you really don't want to walk a single step. It takes only 5 minutes to walk there easily, and the sightseeing bus takes about 1 minute. It is not worth the money at all. Many of the buildings in the city were renovated after 1990, so there is no ancient temperament. The surroundings are also decorated very newly. There are factories in the background in the distance, which is quite artistic. Only after leaving the customs, there are a few camels lying there. Looking in that direction, it is indeed an endless Gobi Desert, which is more in line with my expectations.

During the day, there is a venue in the city where various performances are performed in a loop. At 4 or 5 o'clock in the afternoon, I saw martial arts, magic, and comedy. I actually think it is not interesting, but many tourists are watching. I guess a large part of the ticket money is spent on this. After 5 or 6 o'clock, these people dress up as soldiers and stand guard at various city gates. There are also patrols walking back and forth. If they meet "suspicious" tourists, they will tease you, saying that you are a fugitive and want to be taken away, and you are not allowed to enter the city. This is quite fun.

This scenic spot actually has many different opening hours. I realized they were all correct after I went there. 22:00 is the time to stop climbing the wall, 17:30 is the time when the Great Wall Museum closes during the peak season, and I missed it and couldn't see it. 23:00 is the time to stop entering the scenic spot during the peak season. Everyone should choose according to their needs. If you don't go to the museum, you can enter the city later and it won't be so sunny.

Jiayu Pass has a special significance for the Central Plains civilization. When it was prosperous, the army went out of Jiayu Pass to pacify the Western Regions; when it was weak, it retreated to Jiayu Pass to resist the powerful enemies in the northwest. To a certain extent, it became the bottom line of the Central Plains territory, and Jiayu Pass, with its impregnable fortifications, has never been conquered by foreign enemies, so it is called "the most powerful pass in the world".

Jiayuguan is the westernmost pass in the Ming Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, if you leave Jiayuguan, it is equivalent to going abroad, so here you can experience the feeling and experience of people in the Ming Dynasty going abroad. When I entered, I walked to the other side on the left, the nine-eye spring, it seemed quite quiet there, there were not many tourists, not many visitors, I thought I had taken the wrong road, fortunately after walking for a while, I saw the ticket gate, and then I checked the ticket to enter, you can scan your face there, after the first ticket check, he will record your appearance, after the second and third attractions, you can just scan your face. When I entered, I happened to see some actors performing the Ming Dynasty, um, officers and soldiers fighting, and the wedding customs of the Ming Dynasty. There were also several foreign friends watching there, relishing it, but in my opinion, these are all child's play, all very funny. Then there is a gatekeeper inside called Duoduoguanzhao, and he doesn't allow taking photos. You can apply for their passport there, which costs about 30 yuan, and then they will stamp it for you, which means you have gone abroad.

Jiayuguan Pass is located in the southwest of the city. It was built in the early Ming Dynasty and was completed after more than a hundred years. The pass is an important part of the border defense fortifications in the Ming Dynasty and is connected to the Great Wall. Of course, most of the current pass was rebuilt later. There are the General's Mansion, Wenchang Pavilion, etc. in the city, which is still very majestic from a distance.

To be honest, it's not interesting, you can just not go.

The main scenic area of Jiayuguan has a very northwestern style and is completely different from the Great Wall in Beijing. There are many attractions in the city and the scenic area is very large.

Although the Jiayuguan Great Wall is very old, one can still feel the war and iron cavalry.

The information in the book is from the Ming Dynasty. It will tell you the process of building and closing the city of Jiayuguan. Of course, if you have been to Xi'an to see the city wall, you may think that the structure is very similar. But Xi'an is not a frontier in any era. In the Ming Dynasty, Jiayuguan was considered a frontier. When you go to the city gate and see the desolation in the distance, your mood will naturally be different from that in Xi'an. Looking at the city wall, you can imagine the tragic scenes of both sides when attacking the city.

There is a "Stone Hitting and Swallow Singing" in the city. Because of a legend about a swallow, it is said that if you hit a stone and it sings like a swallow, the soldiers will return home safely. There is a notice on the city wall saying not to hit the wall. So the stone just hit the "Stone Hitting and Swallow Singing" stone lightly, but I didn't hear any sound like the sound of a swallow.

You can see that the width of the wall is much narrower than that of the Badaling Great Wall, and only one person can stand there.

Jiayuguan Pass is not big, and you can finish the tour in a short time. When you leave the pass, you can see the vast Gobi Desert with only a few Achnatherum splendens swaying in the wind.

The First Pass

The Great Wall is ten thousand miles long, stretching all the way westwards, deep into the Gobi Desert. But I still haven't figured out why Jiayuguan has such a grand name and Qilian Mountains has such magnificent scenery, but the river across the way is called Taolai River. It feels like when I was concentrating on watching "The Lover" and suddenly looked back, I found that the author had been changed from Duras to Durex.

Anyway, there are always easter eggs along the way. If you overcome difficulties, you will be in trouble.

Compared with the remaining broken walls of the Han Dynasty Great Wall, Jiayuguan Pass is still well preserved. Standing alone on the Jiayuguan tower, one feels a sense of being alone and in tears, as if there is no one before or after, and the world is vast. Looking back at the thousand-year-old military fortress standing on the ancient Silk Road, one thinks of the thousand-year-old masterpiece "How many men have returned from the battles in ancient times?"

I strongly condemn the ticket inspectors at Jiayuguan Pass. The 9-day trip to the Northwest left a deep impression on us with the beautiful scenery. We visited more than 10 paid scenic spots. The service attitude of most of the scenic spot staff was very good, but the attitude of the staff at Jiayuguan Pass was extremely poor. On the afternoon of October 12, 2018, our group of 13 people set out from Ejina Banner in the morning and arrived at the Jiayuguan Pass scenic spot at around 4:15 pm. In order to save time queuing for tickets, we bought tickets on Ctrip in advance. When I arrived at the scenic spot, I went to the tourist service center to exchange tickets first. I was told to go directly to the ticket gate to scan the QR code. When we arrived at the ticket gate, the ticket inspector said that the network was broken and the QR code could not be scanned. After waiting for a while, another staff member said that the server restarted but it still didn’t work. Because it was already past 4 pm, I was afraid that there was not enough time for the tour. I discussed with the ticket inspector at the time and said that we had online ticket booking information and let us go in first. The ticket inspector said no, I asked what to do, and he told me to go to the tourist service center to exchange tickets. Why can an acquaintance enter by showing the booking information, but others cannot? 4. The female staff member in the photo, are you the wife of an official or the second generation of an official? Aren’t you afraid of complaints from tourists? As scenic area management workers, our philosophy is: 1. Tourists are God; 2. Tourists are always right; 3. Tourists come to us to give us money, not to pay for anger. A scenic area should not only have beautiful scenery, but also high-quality services, so as to attract tourists from all directions to visit. I hope the managers of Jiayuguan Pass will think about it carefully.

You need to scan your fingerprint when showing your ticket to enter Jiayuguan Pass (if you are traveling with multiple people, you only need to scan one person's fingerprint). After that, you need to scan the fingerprint of the previous person to enter the Hanging Wall Great Wall and the first pier of the Great Wall. The combined ticket at the beginning is not enough.

You don't have to take the sightseeing bus. If you walk along the lake to the first fork in the road where you see the city wall, staff will ask you to go left. Don't do that. You must go right and you can go directly into the city through the city gate. If you go left, you will go around a long way.

Not only are the souvenirs too expensive, but the exit also forces tourists to walk a kilometer of shopping streets - this distance is longer than the distance of a battery car.

The battery car is the most lacking in sincerity, and the entrance fee to the scenic spot is relatively high. The first section of the battery car is only 300 to 400 meters, and the route is set by people. Those who don't need to take the car give up their seats, and those who don't take the car have to walk more. It seems that it is designed for the purpose of taking the car, and tourists are sold as commercial resources to the vendors at the door. The scenery is still worth going.

The city wall is very high, built with rammed earth, and consists of an outer city, an inner city, and various gates of different sizes. When you climb the wall, you will have a broad view and your role will change instantly. From the outer city to the inner city, you have to go through many checkpoints, and you have to admire the wisdom of the ancients.

Jiayuguan, known as the No. 1 Pass in the world, has a strong commercial flavor. There are too many stalls and people shouting in the small pass city, which has destroyed the historical charm. . . . . .

I have to give Jiayuguan a bad review. In addition to the desolate feeling of the western wind and sand, it is not as impressive and large as Badaling and Mutianyu. It can be said that the gap is huge. The area of the scenic area is also relatively small, not enough to walk around, and the ticket price is not cheap, 120 yuan per person. The most infuriating thing is: the locals who rented double bicycles in the scenic area said that it took 4.8 kilometers from the starting point to the Guancheng, and deceived us into renting bicycles, but in fact it was only a few hundred meters away, and we could get there by turning a corner.
