The First Mound of the Great Wall

The First Mound of the Great Wall is the starting point of the ancient Great Wall. It was actually a beacon tower, and now only a mound remains. The scenic area also includes the Taolai River zipline, the natural suspension bridge, and the "Drunk on the Battlefield" sculpture group.
The most worth seeing is the Taolai River, the mother river of Jiayuguan behind the first pier. It is formed by the melting snow of glaciers on the Qilian Mountains and flows to Jiayuguan. There is a suspension bridge hanging over the Taolai River, which is steep and spectacular.
There are two drop-off points for the scenic area sightseeing bus. One is the museum at the west entrance. There is a glass observation deck in the museum where you can see the river below your feet through the glass. There is also a cable car that allows you to cross the Taolai River in the air. The second point is at the barracks. You can walk across the iron chain bridge to cross the Taolai River to the other side, and then climb up the hillside to get closer to the Taolai River.

The ticket includes the First Mound of the Great Wall, Jiayuguan Pass, and the Cantilever Great Wall. I suggest you come and see it. The First Mound of the Great Wall, as its name implies, is the first earthen mound used to build the Great Wall. It is still there and was built in the Ming Dynasty. In addition to the First Mound of the Great Wall, there are many other small attractions such as the Grand Canyon and the Glass Bridge. However, the journey here is a little far.

The Great Wall ends here. In ancient times when development was not advanced, nomadic cavalry could not cross this big canyon.

Entering from the north gate, the shuttle bus to the first pier costs 12 yuan round trip - but the slight slope of the road made us misjudge the distance, thinking it was only 1 kilometer, so we confidently walked along the road beside the city wall, but it took more than 20 minutes to arrive. The actual distance is 2 kilometers, so this 12 yuan shuttle bus can be said to be very cost-effective.

The scenic area is very large, and there is a large barracks under the cliff. In addition to the first pier, there are also many other contents such as zip lines, suspension bridges, and inn sculptures.

Before climbing the Badaling Great Wall, we first came to the starting point of the Ming Great Wall - the first pier of the Great Wall

When the rulers of the Ming Dynasty found that this was the narrowest throat of the Hexi Corridor, they began to station troops and build passes. Today, more than 600 years later, we took a bus to the first pier of the Great Wall. The short road of a few kilometers felt like a train heading to the end of the world. The endless Gobi Desert was about to swallow us up...

I swayed alone on the suspension bridge across the Taolai River for a while. Although I knew that there was only an antique military camp under my feet, I could still imagine a border battle with swords and horses. Even the cats and dogs lying on the ground were so aggressive that people dared not approach them.

As the name suggests, the First Mound of the Great Wall is the first earthen mound built in the construction of the Great Wall. It is still there and was built in the Ming Dynasty. After visiting the First Mound of the Great Wall Historical and Cultural Experience Hall, you can see this huge earthen mound. It is the starting point on the west side of the Great Wall.

After entering, you are forced to buy a sightseeing bus ticket, which costs about 12 yuan. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary small mound, nothing to see, but its actual significance is quite large, the Great Wall starts from here. It seems that there is something similar to a museum below, let me introduce this small mound.

The First Tower is the westernmost tower in the Ming Great Wall system. It was an important border defense site and was guarded by soldiers. The tower is located on the Taolai River Gorge, overlooking the magnificent scenery.

It is just a mound of earth, from which you can feel the hardships and difficulties that the ancients went through in building the Great Wall.

It is a site of a Great Wall tower, which is the starting point of the western end of the Ming Great Wall. However, the Taolai River Valley is more attractive in this scenic spot.

By Traveler from the West |

It's just a mound of earth, I can't feel anything.

I am from the northwest and I often see loess mounds. If you haven't seen them, you can go and have a look.

By Paramecium |

It takes about 20 minutes to drive from the "Hanging Wall Great Wall" to the "First Tower of the Great Wall". The tower is a building where the ancients used smoke and fire to transmit military information. This is the first tower from west to east of the Great Wall of Ming Dynasty and the starting point of the western end of the Ming Great Wall. It is hard to imagine that this earthen mound carefully protected by a circle of guardrails has such epoch-making significance.

By inspiration |

On one side is the rolling Qilian Mountains, on the other side is the Taolai River flowing down the canyon, and on this side is an antique military camp. Even though I am not well-versed in literature, I still miss a few lines of poetry:

"The smoke rises straight up from the desert, and the sun sets over the long river."

"The wine is good in the luminescent cup, and the pipa music is urging me to drink."

"I left my parents in the morning and stayed by the Yellow River in the evening. I did not hear my parents calling me, but only heard the sound of the Yellow River flowing. I left the Yellow River in the morning and arrived at the Black Mountain in the evening. I did not hear my parents calling me, but only heard the sound of the Hu cavalry in Yanshan."

It seems to be becoming less and less relevant, but these lines of poetry really come to my mind.

It was my parents' first time in Northwest China, and this was the first attraction they visited. They actually walked around for three hours. We were said to be breaking the record. There are probably very few people like us who traveled all the way to spend three hours at the first tower of the Great Wall.

The "First Tower" is located in the south of Jiayuguan City and on the north bank of Taolai River. As we drive along the road, we can see the endless Great Wall along the way until we reach the "First Tower". We can see that the ancient Great Wall starts and ends either at high mountain cliffs or at river canyons.

There was a gate, surrounded by wire. Looking inside through the wire, it was still desolate, with only some low earthen walls.

By Adventure Travel |

Walking through the ancient barracks and the "Drunk on the Battlefield" sculpture group in the scenic area, looking at the river water surging eastward in the Taolai River Valley in front of you, the soldiers who were stationed there for the prosperity of the ancient Silk Road seem to be right in front of you.

Jiayuguan

The bright moon in Qin Dynasty and the pass in Han Dynasty, Jiayu Pass is the end point of the Ming Great Wall and the starting point of the policy of closing the country to the outside world.

Two points in a straight line, I always feel that the mixed feelings of these two points are a bit regrettable, but putting aside the historical merits and demerits, to be fair, Jiayuguan is a good place, backed by Qilian Mountains, with green shade and cool breeze, and there is no need to turn on the air conditioner even on a 30-degree day. You drink snow mountain water and eat beef noodles, and I think the beef noodles here are the best in the northwest.

The Great Wall is long, but it will eventually end. The memories are full, but it will eventually end. My nine-day trip to the northwest ended at Jiayuguan. I was still a hero yesterday, and tomorrow I will go back to the company to be a ninja. I am a little reluctant, but with Chinese characters in my hands and Tang poetry in my heart, Jiayuguan is not an insignificant pass for me, but a pass that is closely related to me.

I sincerely recommend everyone to come to the northwest. Although Jiuzhaigou is beautiful, it lacks human culture, the glory of the Han Dynasty, and the Hexi Corridor.

The first tower of the Great Wall where the ancients guarded the border. I took a photo from a distance.

By psyluo |

The first beacon tower of the Great Wall starting from Jiayuguan in the west was built on the edge of the Taolai River Gorge. It relied on the natural barrier to prevent the invasion of nomadic peoples, which shows the wisdom of the ancients.

The round-trip ticket for the sightseeing bus is 12 yuan, and one-way tickets cannot be sold.

The scenic area gate is not far from the scenic spot. If the weather is not hot, you can also walk by yourself. The sightseeing bus ticket is really not expensive, so it is recommended to take it.

The First Tower of the Great Wall is the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall. Today, only a piece of yellow earth remains, and the hustle and bustle and glory of the past have returned to tranquility.

The First Tower of the Great Wall is the most important tower in the south of the Great Wall. It is responsible for transmitting military information from the south of the Great Wall and the Qilian Mountains. It is equipped with docks, post horses, post camels, food and accommodation, firewood storage, etc., and is equipped with a certain number of guards.

The First Tower of the Great Wall, also known as Taolaihe Tower, is the southernmost tower of the Jiayuguan West Great Wall and the westernmost tower of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall.

Fortunately, you can go to the glass platform to enjoy the scenery

By China-TravelNote users |

It's pretty good. It's a joint ticket with Jiayuguan Pass. I thought it was far away and didn't want to go, but I was quite surprised after I went there. There is an exhibition hall to learn more, the river valley scenery is quite spectacular, and there is also an ancient village. If you have enough time, it is still worth a visit. It costs 12 yuan to take a battery car from the entrance to the inside of the scenic area. If you walk, it is 2 kilometers one way, which is a bit far.

By Happy walking |

Time has ravaged it into a scarred and desolate state, with only a mound of earth left, but it still stands proudly on the cliff. A wall, surrounding the ancient civilization, surrounding the vast years.

By There is no silver here |

The gate of the scenic area is still some distance away from the first pier. If you are in a hurry, you can buy a 12 yuan scenic area bus. In addition to the first pier, there is a mound of earth, a small exhibition hall and an antique barracks.

Standing next to the first pier and looking at the Taolai River, it can be seen that the site was indeed in a dangerous position.

By smile |

The construction of the scenic area of the First Mound is quite conscientious. Considering that simply looking at a mound is a bit monotonous, the scenic area has set up a small museum. There is a glass platform in the museum, and you can see the Taolai River below.

If the No. 1 Mound in the World had not been enclosed, it would not be considered to have such great historical value.

Hidden in the museum is a record of the historical changes of Jiayuguan. It is worth visiting. It is a good opportunity for adults and children to review history. You can also stand on the glass plank road and overlook the Taolai River, which originates from the Qilian Mountains and merges into the Beida River and flows slowly eastward (those who are afraid of heights should be careful).

There is also a glass observation deck here. I am afraid of heights, so I took photos with trepidation.

The First Pier attractions include the First Pier ruins, barracks, fortress, and glass observation deck. Except for the First Pier ruins, all others are newly built. Due to the high temperature and feeling tired, I did not visit the barracks.

The First Pier of the Great Wall is far away from Jiayuguan and the Hanging Wall Great Wall, about 7.5 kilometers away.

It is also called Taolaihedun. It is the southernmost pier of the Jiayuguan West Great Wall. It is also the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty. It was built on a 56-meter-high cliff beside the Taolai River. The Taolai River is also called the "Northern Great River". It originates from the Qilian Mountains.

The first tower of the Great Wall is of great significance to the descendants of the Chinese nation:

It echoes the "Old Dragon Head" in Shanhaiguan, Hebei Province. Together they form the head and tail of the "dragon" of the Great Wall of China, and have earned the Chinese nation the good name of "dragon."

If the Great Wall is a monument of the Chinese nation, then the first pier of the Great Wall is where this monument rises. It is a ruin. Tourists who like to see the scenery and visit beautiful attractions should not go there. However, tourists who like and care about the history of the Chinese nation and have historical connotations are advised to go there to experience it. The historical educational significance there is greater than the appreciation significance of sightseeing.

Now the remaining height of this pier is about 10 meters, and the rammed earth layer is 10-20 centimeters thick. If you have the opportunity to visit Jiayuguan in the future, it is best to visit the first pier of the Great Wall. Although it is not as famous as Jiayuguan, it is the origin of the Chinese dragon of the Great Wall after all. We should learn about it.

【The scenic spot is bad! Didi driver is a liar, 10 yuan detour turned into 111 yuan! 】Let’s not talk about the bad reviews of Jiayuguan scenic spot on the Internet, let’s talk about a disgusting thing I encountered today. It’s more than 7 kilometers from the Jiayuguan Railway Station to Jiayuguan Pass. Didi taxi showed an estimated 10 yuan. After getting in the car, the driver recommended us to go to the first pier of the Great Wall, saying it was very famous. We navigated about 7.5 kilometers away, but the driver said that route was blocked and the road was under construction. He took us for a detour of 12 kilometers to see a broken hillside. Later, we saw that Jiayuguan Pass was 3 kilometers away. We asked the driver to take us there. When we arrived at about 1 kilometer from the gate, we clearly saw a bus passing by, but the driver said he would not let us pass. We took a big circle of more than ten kilometers to Jiayuguan Pass. In the end, it was charged 111 yuan. I complained to the customer service decisively. Sure enough, I took a lot of detours. The customer service refunded 99 yuan. The result is as follows!

The First Pier attraction is bundled with Jiayuguan, and you still need to take the scenic area shuttle bus to get there. It is enough to take a photo at the First Pier. On the contrary, the Taolai River Canyon seems to be much more interesting.

By Joy |

To be honest, it's just a mound, nothing to see. I bought the ticket at 16:10 and took the sightseeing bus for ¥12/person (you can choose not to take it if you have enough time, it's not very far), and came out at 16:55.

In fact, it is still of historical significance, but for someone like me who is not particularly interested in history, it is a bit boring.

By Nine |

The first pier is the western starting point of the Great Wall. It is built on the steep cliff of the river bank. It is magnificent and very impressive. There is also a cable bridge to the other side of the river.

By Nowhere |

As its name suggests, the First Mound is the first pier on the west side of the Great Wall, which is of great significance. However, it has an ordinary appearance, and many tourists say that it is "not worth visiting, just a mound, nothing else".

Personally, if you think this is "nothing", please don't watch it. Blasphemy.

Why is the southwest starting point of the Great Wall here? Looking at the simulated restoration of the barracks outside the tower, you can see the wide view of the first tower. Walk into the barracks and look at the first tower. The first tower is located on the Taolai River Grand Canyon. The terrain is dangerous and the view is wide. Even laymen can get that this is a good place to set up the checkpoints.

The Ruoshui River, where "only one scoop of water from three thousand rivers" is located, is located in the "No. 1 Mound in the World" scenic area.

Entering the scenic area from a gate made of earth, you can see the suspension bridge over the Ruoshui River from afar. After walking for about 20 minutes, you will find a man-made ancient village, the filming location of "Detective Di Renjie". After crossing the Ruoshui Suspension Bridge, you will see the filming location of Maggie Cheung's role as Tofu Xishi.

By Big Big Big |

The ticket price for Jiayuguan is also ridiculous. The three attractions are far away but it is indeed a package deal.

By Little chatterbox |

I think it's pretty nice. First, visit the museum, which has a glass viewing platform. Then visit the first pier. Then visit the Taolai River, where you can walk across the suspension bridge to the other side.

By Xlsong |

If Guancheng is already a chicken rib, then this is the chicken rib among the chicken ribs. Because of the bundled ticket, it would be uneconomical if you don't come. But it would be even more uneconomical if you come, and you have to buy a scenic spot ticket. Of course, you can also choose to walk a few kilometers in the vast Gobi Desert. And there is nothing to see inside, mainly the underground exhibition hall and the first pier. The only advantage may be that the scenery of the river valley is OK.

By Awa's Travel Diary |

The First Tower of the Great Wall, also known as Taolaihe Tower, was built on the bank of Taolai River during the Jiajing period. It is the southernmost tower of the Jiayuguan West Great Wall and the westernmost tower of the Ming Great Wall. It is 7.5 kilometers away from the city wall, bordering Jiuquan to the east, the desert to the west, Jiayuguan to the north, and Qilian Mountains to the south. It is responsible for transmitting military information.

Going forward, there is an ancient barracks built only for filming. Although it is not a relic of ancient times, it is worth going down to take a look. Passing through the barracks, you can see the Taolai River flowing in the valley. The iron cable suspension bridge crosses the river, which gives you a sense of natural danger! After leaving the barracks, you can visit the History and Culture Experience Hall.

The venue is built underground, and the main part introduces Jiayuguan, the First Pier and the Ming Great Wall, with pictures, texts, short films, and a Jiayuguan model display.

The First Tower of the Great Wall is the first beacon tower at the westernmost end of the Great Wall in the Ming Dynasty. It stands on the north bank of the Taolai River, and across the river is the Qilian Mountains. Only the remains of the tower are left, and my poem is not finished, and I am probably still drunk. The entrance of the scenic area is quite far from the first pier, about two kilometers. The sightseeing bus gets off at the underground valley, which contains the cultural experience hall. After the visit, I walked back and saw the first pier in the world, the starting point of the ancient Great Wall. Now there is only a mound left. After passing the city wall and walking west, you can see the Taolai River up close. The Taolai River is formed by the melting snow of the glaciers on the Qilian Mountains and flows to Jiayuguan. The middle and upper reaches are eroded by the river for a long time, and the riverbed is widening or sinking year by year, forming a large canyon with a depth ranging from fifty to sixty meters to eight hundred meters. There is a suspension bridge hanging over the Taolai River, which is steep and spectacular. Walk across the iron chain bridge to cross the Taolai River to the other side, climb the hillside, and you can see the Qilian Snow Mountain in the distance.

Ticket price: 22 yuan/person, sightseeing bus 12 yuan/person.

It was raining and snowing that day, but it didn't stop my enthusiasm for going to the First Mound. This attraction is the last one to go to among the three attractions in Jiayuguan. The First Mound gave me the impression that it was a big mound that had lost its original value after years of vicissitudes. However, the canyon scenery behind the First Mound was great.

The ticket for Jiayuguan is a package ticket. In addition to Jiayuguan Pass, you can also visit the First Pier of the Great Wall and the Hanging Wall Great Wall. Whether you buy tickets online or at the store, you must first pick up the ticket at the Pass Scenic Area before you can use the ticket to visit other attractions. Otherwise, you will have to buy a separate ticket here. With the ticket, you need to pay an additional 12 yuan/person for the scenic spot at the First Pier of the Great Wall. The scenic area is open until 19:00.

There is actually not much to see in this attraction. 30 minutes is enough. There is an underground exhibition hall, a military camp, and this pile of earth.

It is recommended to go to the Cantilever Great Wall after visiting Jiayuguan Pass, and then go to the First Pier of the Great Wall if you have time and energy.

The First Tower of the Great Wall, also known as the Taolai River Tower, is the southernmost tower of the Jiayuguan West Great Wall and the westernmost tower of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. The First Tower of the Great Wall was built in the 18th year of the Ming Dynasty Jiajing (1539 AD) by Li Han, the military governor of Suzhou. It is 7.5 kilometers north of the city and stands on a cliff nearly 56 meters high beside the Taolai River. The First Tower of the Great Wall scenic area includes: the underground valley (observation platform, natural hall, cultural hall and Taolai River Canyon) and the First Tower in the World. The Underground Valley Cultural Hall preserves a large number of precious cultural relics, especially the Great Wall Centennial Review. It includes the book "The Great Wall of China" by American William Edgar Gallo and the collection of 100-year comparison photos of the Great Wall of China taken by British William Lindsay. Among them, the 100-year comparison photos of the First Tower prove that the First Tower has basically maintained its original appearance for 100 years. Standing on the observation deck, overlooking the Taolai River Canyon, the First Tower and the bridge cableway in the distance.

Transportation to the scenic area: The distance from the entrance of the scenic area to the underground valley is about 3 kilometers. There is a shuttle bus from the scenic area to the gate-underground valley-the No. 1 Mound in the World-the gate of the scenic area.

Although it is another cloudy day, the ancient monuments appear to complement each other in such weather. It was once so glorious. When it was first built, it may have made important contributions to blocking the attacks of the grassland peoples time and time again. Countless smoke signals may have been lit here, and it may have protected the lives of people many times. Now it has lost its former mission and has been left idle here, turning into a lonely mound of earth. It is a sad story to think about it, but it has become a symbol of China together with the Great Wall. The diligence and wisdom of the Chinese nation embodied in it will continue to be inherited.

The so-called museums are basically replicas, and you can just look at the contrast between Jiayuguan today and yesterday. The Taolai River Grand Canyon has beautiful scenery. It's too cold in winter, but there are still some activities to play in summer. The first pier is just for fun. It's a bit far to enter the scenic area. The shuttle bus costs 12 yuan, or you can walk by yourself. Overall, it's OK.

There are many places that are repaired manually, which is much better than in the 1990s, but they charge admission

There are two entrances to the First Pier, the East Gate and the North Gate (the East Gate is close to the city, but there are fewer cars, so most people who charter a car like to go to the North Gate). Both are one kilometer away from the First Pier, and you need to take a sightseeing bus to get there.

Individual tickets: 21 yuan/person, sightseeing bus: 11 yuan/person

This area is very windy and sandy, and the distances between several scenic spots are not close. Against the backdrop of the Gobi Desert, you will feel thirsty.

Underground Palace: A little science to enrich your brain; the platform next to the toilet allows you to stand above the Gobi Desert and Taolai River.

You can closely observe the wind erosion changes of the first pier at different time periods, and you can also touch the city wall and feel the price paid when it was built.

Film and Television Base: Gobi Desert/Barracks/Sculpture/Taolai Inn; the statues of drunk people lying on the battlefield show that they are unhappy and helpless; the suspension bridge allows you to feel the wind and the rapids of the Taolai River; you can also find many active black beetles in the sand over there.

It is best to come here at noon when it is hottest, so it will be warmer and not too cold when the wind and sand blow. However, this place is quite a rip-off, and I will never come here again.

Also, tourists should be kind and not litter or draw on things. After all, its lifespan is limited, so protect it as much as possible.

To be honest, we are not sure whether it is real, but if it is real, it will gradually disappear with weathering, so if you can go and see it, go and see it, maybe it will all be fake.

The first tower of the Great Wall, October 2, 2008, Jiayuguan.

By Jennifer Zhu |

It was of great strategic significance in ancient times, but nowadays it is just a mound.

The name of the First Barrier is well-deserved. With the current water flow, it is hard to imagine how flat it was back then. Only a mound of earth remains on the First Barrier. History, along with the sweet wind, has blown the stories here into the world.

By Let's go |

The First Mound of the Great Wall is the starting point of the ancient Great Wall. It was actually a beacon tower, and now only a mound remains.

The mound is small, but the scenic area is huge. It takes two kilometers to walk from the ticket office to the mound, but you can also take a sightseeing bus. The walls of scenic spots throughout Gansu seem to be very long. What the Australian uncle said makes sense. If you can see the mound at the gate, who would buy a ticket to come in? They would just take a photo and leave.

There is another identical mound outside the scenic area, and the taxi driver said it was the second mound. But who is the first and who is the second may be a random definition.

The first tower of the Great Wall, Jiayuguan cultural site

By njshuhong |

The First Tower of the Great Wall, also known as Taolai River Tower, is an important part of the defense system of the Jiayuguan Great Wall. Jiayuguan is a tower at the westernmost end of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, and is also the most spectacular and best preserved ancient military pass along the Great Wall. The tower stands on a cliff more than 50 meters high beside the Taolai River. The terrain is extremely dangerous, and the river and mountains are in full view, which naturally forms a situation where one man can block the pass and ten thousand men cannot break through.

The "First Mound of the Great Wall" is a beacon tower on the ancient Great Wall, which is also a lookout tower. Once an enemy is discovered, fireworks will be lit to warn the enemy. There is one tower at a certain distance. The "First Mound of the Great Wall" is the starting point of the westernmost end of the ancient Great Wall. Visitors only see a lonely loess mound.

The First Mound of the Great Wall is the starting point of the ancient Great Wall. It was actually a beacon tower, but now only a large mound remains. After being exposed to wind and sun, I am afraid it will disappear little by little in the future.

From here you can see the Qilian Snow Mountain in the distance, which makes people yearn for it.

I personally think the first pier of the Great Wall is very good and worth a visit
