Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, also known as Chen's Academy, is located on Zhongshan 7th Road in Guangzhou. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall was built in the 16th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign and completed in the 20th year. Tickets are 10 yuan per person, and there are corresponding tickets for students and the elderly. Ordinary tickets can only be purchased by scanning the WeChat QR code and following the official account. Only discounted tickets can be purchased at the ticket window. Everyone enters by swiping their ID cards. After entering, it is strongly recommended to hire a tour guide. A group of less than ten people is 100 yuan per group. In other words, ten people are 100 yuan, and one person is also 100 yuan. So you can form a group by yourself, but don't let the staff know. We secretly formed a group of eight with a Shanghai family. The two people who came later were too loud when they formed a group, and the staff heard and stopped them.

The stone carvings, pottery sculptures, brick carvings, handicrafts, etc. inside are indeed very exquisite and gorgeous, which is a complete visual enjoyment. With the introduction of the historical and cultural background by professionals, we have a deeper understanding of them and a better appreciation. The alleys, brick carvings, and walls inside are all very good places for taking photos. I took several very satisfactory photos inside.

There are many wood carvings in Chen Clan Academy. Basically, the doors are carved with patterns of flowers, birds, fruits, etc., which are lifelike, and each door is different.

10 yuan a ticket is not common in big cities nowadays. But I don't understand why many attractions in Guangzhou require ID cards. I can't buy tickets without my ID card, which is not very friendly for people like me who like to leave their ID cards in hotels.

Based on my limited knowledge of ancient buildings such as ancestral halls and temples in the South Vietnam region, this is the gorgeous and colorful carved corridor lintel glazed tiles. Several internal museums are quite good, especially the gold-painted wood carving of a hundred birds paying homage to the phoenix, which really fascinated me.

Chen Clan Temple, also known as "Chen's Academy", was completed in the 19th year of Emperor Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1893). It was a clan temple built in Guangzhou by Chen clans from all over Guangdong at a cost of over one million taels of silver, with the best craftsmen and materials used. The Qing government was worried that the establishment of a clan temple would lead to mass gatherings and pose a threat to the regime, so it prohibited the construction of clan temples by the public. The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is not very large. Its structure is divided into three axes and three entrances. It has nine halls and six courtyards, covering an area of 15,000 square meters and a building area of 8,000 square meters. There was originally a pool and a flagpole in front of the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, which is a standard configuration of Lingnan clan ancestral halls. Later, the pool was filled and a house was built. Now, after being demolished, it has been turned into a square, and the flagpole has been restored to its original state. The flagpole is a symbol of the honor of the clan. The stone on the flagpole is also engraved with the name, time, and ranking of the candidate, showing the name recognized by the country and representing the reputation and glory of a clan.

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall was originally a "Chen Clan Academy" built between the 14th and 20th years of the reign of Emperor Guangxu. It was just unexpected that Chen Clan Academy, which had experienced the war years, could not escape the man-made destruction during the war. Tens of thousands of tablets were burned down by the fire, and only two tablets survived. The large murals in the academy and the gate of the academy were also severely damaged. What we can see today is the academy that was restored in 1983, which is always a pity.

It was raining heavily when I visited Chen Clan Academy. Standing under the corridor, I saw the pottery ridge decorations and carved paintings become more vivid after being washed by rain. Walking in the academy, the architectural decorations with southern Guangdong characteristics are impressive. Every brick and tile, every window and every door shows the efforts of the anonymous folk craftsmen.
