Shantou Old Town

The Old Street District is a landmark building complex in Shantou and a must-visit place for returned overseas Chinese to trace their roots.
Most of the buildings are Western-style arcades, and a large number of them were built in the early 20th century. The styles are mostly imitation Romanesque, imitation Gothic, Baroque, etc.
The “arcades” for shelter from the rain, the rows of time-honored shops, and the slightly messy streets all reveal the unique historical style of the old city of Shantou.
This was once the most prosperous commercial center in Shantou. Walking through it, historical buildings such as the Shantou General Post Office Building and the Lao Ma Palace still retain their original appearance.

It was under renovation a year and a half ago, and it is still under renovation this year; but to be more precise, it is a reconstruction. The building after reconstruction has lost its original architectural flavor. I can only say that it will become more and more commercialized in the future. I personally prefer old buildings. It would be great if they could be repaired instead of rebuilt. The value of this place can be maintained for a longer time.

When we came here in October, Shantou's old city had already begun a large-scale renovation, and the entire old city exudes a sense of history. The exterior of the old city department store has been basically renovated and is shining again.

When you come to Shantou, you must take a walk around the old town and trace the prosperity and prosperity of history.

The main buildings are arcades from the Republic of China period. Most of the arcades here are three or four stories high. They now look dilapidated, but the appearance of the past can be seen through the arcade buildings. The snacks left between the arcades are a feast for the eyes.

Historical buildings such as the department store, Yongping Restaurant, Shantou General Post Office Building, and Laoma Palace still retain their original appearance, telling of the former glory of this place.

The ancient buildings here have witnessed the changes of history. When you come here, you will be moved by the scenery.

The time-honored shops lining both sides of the road, the slightly mottled and chaotic streets, and the quaint decorative patterns near the doors and windows all reveal the unique historical style of Shantou Old Town.

The ancient buildings here are a fusion of Chaoshan and Nanyang styles. Even though they are dilapidated and mottled, they still have a unique charm.

Today, the old city of Shantou has lost its former splendor, but everyone who knows this century-old history has fond memories of this familiar old place. The exquisite window style, the sun shining obliquely, leaving only mottled shadows. The unique Nanyang style, coupled with exquisite patterns and carvings, is so beautiful that it is fascinating.

Take a stroll through the old city, appreciate the exotic architecture, and feel the vicissitudes of history. If you go to Shantou, you must take a walk in the old city. Only historical things are worth appreciating.

By Natural |

This place is really old, and many buildings are marked as dangerous. It feels dangerous to visit. A small part is being rebuilt, and it is here that you can experience the historical atmosphere of decades ago, which is similar to the old city of Chaozhou. At present, most of these historical buildings are demolished for urban construction, and it is a blessing that they are well preserved here.

The old house contrasts sharply with the modern car

I grew up in Guangzhou and have always had a deep affection for arcades. It was only when I came to the old city of Shantou that I discovered that the arcades here have a different flavor. When people on the street ride motorcycles or bicycles and shuttle between the arcades, mothers come out of the vegetable market carrying a big bag of spoils of harvest, chatting along the way, and it actually feels like a peaceful time.

Please note that some areas in this small park are still under renovation, so if you see the road is closed, don't go there. Safety first, most of the areas are still not renovated, so you can go there without worry.

There are hardly any modern shops here, only old-style small shops. However, these small shops fit in with the local area. If some modern shops were interspersed here, they would look very out of place.

By Cute |

A shocking discovery was that the old city of Shantou was actually undergoing renovation. There were very few dilapidated ancient arcades left. Most of the arcades were surrounded by safety nets and scaffolding outside. I didn't know where the traditional Shantou snacks mentioned by netizens had been moved. I felt very disappointed, but fortunately I persisted and found some dilapidated arcades that had not yet been renovated. To be honest, the existing arcades are not as good as those in Beihai Old Street. At least Beihai Old Street is still prosperous and lively, with various shops still crowded with people, and the streets are also bustling with people.

By Rest, little thief |

I have never seen such a dilapidated old city. Is this a special zone? The distinctive modern commercial buildings all look dangerous and unpopular. The small park at the core is just a bunch of weeds. You can't see the appearance of the former commercial center at all. I don't know what the Shantou Municipal Government is doing? This is the history of Shantou and the root of Shantou. If it continues to be dilapidated, it will be destroyed.

Shantou Old Town is being renovated and rebuilt, but even if it is rebuilt, the framework of the original buildings is retained. I believe that after it is renovated, it will be more suitable for strolling in it and feeling the prosperity of the past. There are Zhongshan Pavilion, Tianhou Temple and a small theater here. It is worth spending half a day here, otherwise you will feel unsatisfied.

There are many Internet-famous shops hidden in this old city. The fronts are not very big, but the snacks are full of local characteristics. You don't need to deliberately navigate to find them, you can find them in a few steps.

[Old Town] is a landmark building complex in Shantou. The charm of Shantou is also reflected in these bricks and tiles. Many architectural styles incorporate some Western elements and combine with local characteristics, which have a sense of age. The old town is actually in the stage of renovation now. It is basically under renovation and maintenance. I am afraid that it may become more commercialized in the future.

Most of the buildings are Western-style arcades, and a large number of them were built in the early 20th century. This is also the most prosperous commercial center in Shantou City, but it is now under renovation, and only the small park has been completed. However, there are still some slightly messy streets and quaint decorative patterns near doors and windows, all of which reveal the unique historical style of the old city of Shantou.

[Small Park] A landmark building in the old city. Next to it is the department store, which is very retro and suitable for taking photos.

There are buildings and residential buildings with an ancient atmosphere everywhere, and any shot you take will turn out to be a blockbuster!

The Old Street District is a landmark building complex in Shantou and a must-visit place for returned overseas Chinese to trace their roots. Most of the buildings are Western-style arcades, and a large number of buildings built in the early 20th century are gathered here. The styles are mostly antique Romanesque, imitation Gothic, Baroque, etc. Shantou Old Town has been undergoing a comprehensive renovation since 2018.

Although the scenery is missing during the renovation period, traces of history and the structure of the building have been revealed.

The most surprising thing about my visit to Shantou this time was that the urban area of Shantou was full of dilapidated buildings built after the liberation, which was far from the expected image of one of the four special economic zones.

The old town was very quiet in the afternoon. There were no people. I walked slowly in the old town and felt the baptized buildings. I was not in a hurry. The time was just right.

The old street has been under renovation recently, but it is not yet fully completed, so you can see renovated shelves or fences everywhere.

Many places in Shantou Old Town are being renovated and rebuilt

There are almost no shops. I guess if it is built, it will become a commercial district.

By Shuishui |

Continue into the old town, but it is mainly under renovation, a large area.

But we can still see the glory days.

Near Xidi Park, there are a few renovated buildings to see. After walking for about ten minutes, I finally saw them. They are really nice.

By China-TravelNote users |

When we arrived, it was under renovation, so we didn't see many places. But I felt that this old town had no flavor anymore, like a replica of other buildings! It was a good walk!

By ~-~Ji~-~ |

It was under renovation when I went there, and there was dust everywhere, so I didn't stay long. It will definitely be beautiful after the renovation, and I will go there again if I have the chance.

By |

The old town is just across the Luoshi Bridge. The whole arcade is under reconstruction, so I went to Wuqiaotou. Some of the graffiti on the walls are very unique haha

By Mr. Daegu |

The old street is still under renovation, it should be very nice in half a year~

By Cancer Mumu |

The old city area is basically under renovation and maintenance, only the small park pavilion has been renovated. After seeing it, I have one feeling: what our ancestors left behind are all good things, and I hope these historical and cultural heritages can be well protected.

By Large cooking pot |

I arrived at the time when the old city of Shantou was being renovated. Many old buildings had been weathered for a long time and were in danger of collapse. The government had to rebuild them. One by one, the witnesses of history were quietly buried in the footsteps of time and forgotten with the change of generations. I had no choice but to pick up the camera in my hand and record some of the remaining scenes as much as possible. Maybe the next time I set foot on this land again, I will see a different scene.

By Misty Ranger |

Now the old city is repairing roads everywhere, only the area near the small park pavilion has been repaired. When we repair all these old buildings, the pedestrian street and shops will be opened. Then more people will come to travel.

The old buildings near the Cunxin Charity Hall are well preserved. During the Guangxu period, there was a great plague in Chaoshan area. At that time, the Zen Buddhist master Song Dafeng came to treat the patients with talismans, water and elixirs. Local merchants and gentry funded the construction of the Cunxin Charity Hall and the Dafeng Patriarch Temple, and these old buildings are still preserved today.

There is a post office established by the Qing government near the small park. Opposite the post office is the Shantou Port History and Culture Exhibition Hall, where you can learn about the history of the past. On the way home, I always go to Lao Chaoxing to make kueh and bring some kueh back. I love their meat, vegetable and sweet fillings, especially red bean and taro paste.

By Rice ball karenchow |

The old town, originally I wanted to see the ancient buildings here, but it turned out that they were all being renovated... It was like entering a ruined city. I believe that after the renovation, this place will be a very important "tourist attraction" in Shantou, because there are stories, history, and architecture. As long as we do a good job in attracting investment, there will definitely be limitless future~

I will come again when the renovation is completed.

By Muzi |

Arrived at the old city of Shantou on August 19th. All the streets nearby were under renovation. The completed buildings were similar to the various Shanzhai attractions. I guess it may become a standard tourist attraction in the future. I don't think about going there again. I am not interested in the beach. There seems to be no place to play in Shantou city except this place.

By Hahaha |

I really don't recommend this attraction. The surrounding area is in a mess and under construction. I'm also drunk.

By 💓 Xiaoting |

The next day we just strolled around the old town. There were many snacks, various kinds of rice cakes, sugar-scallion pancakes, beef balls and cuttlefish balls are my two favorites. You must buy them. Lao Ma Palace Zongqiu is right next to Lao Ma Palace, ten yuan each, and the delicious Shantou rice rolls have a lot of toppings. A colleague said that he had eaten rice rolls for more than thirty yuan and he couldn't imagine how much toppings were added. There is a small park next to the old town. You can walk around and then you can visit Fuhecheng beef balls.

By Potato Li |

When visiting the old city, the sun was too strong and we basically didn't dare to get out of the car at noon. We could only sit in the car with the air conditioner on and take pictures. There was no other way. We felt like we were going to melt looking at the sun. The buildings in the old city are quite distinctive, but they are being renovated recently. It is said that the inside will be renovated, but the outside will not be touched. After all, these buildings have some history, so it is normal to need maintenance. When they are completed, it will be suitable to go for a walk and take some pictures.

By Yuujo |

Which great god 🙏🙏 can tell me what I bought here? ? I was fooled!! I bought it in a store in the old city, I feel like I was lost in shopping!! The old city is being renovated everywhere now, I suggest you don’t go there!

By A snow pea |

Although the arcade building is quite unique, it still feels like a dangerous building, old and dirty. I hope it will be better after renovation. The place where we live is also in the old city area. There are residential areas nearby and small shops on both sides of the road. Because of the residents, it is quite humane here. You can see aunties carrying vegetables home and uncles sitting in recliners listening to operas leisurely. I think families who keep a lot of plants at home must be people who know how to live.

By Feathering |

Old-style arcade buildings with Nanyang style are a must-see when visiting Shantou

By Tyrannosaurus Rex |

I just want to ask how this app got the No.2 popularity. It's such a rip-off. I will definitely uninstall it.

By Zizi_XX |

Shantou's old city is dilapidated. The architectural style of the houses seems to have remained in the past ten years, but it has its own flavor. The small park area is being renovated now, so there is nothing to take pictures of. The snacks recommended online are either too big to attract customers or closed for the New Year. Some roadside stalls are pleasant surprises, but the prices are expensive. The traffic conditions are poor. The air is filled with the smell of motorcycles. Some roads are bumpy and difficult to ride. (This is just my personal opinion. Shantou is still a place worth visiting, but don't be too disappointed.)

By A snow pea |

Shantou's small park is located in the center of the old city. There are many snacks nearby, and tourists always come here for a walk.

When we went there, it was under renovation and it was night, so we didn't see anything.

Although the arcade building is quite unique, it still feels like a dangerous building, dilapidated and dirty. I hope it will be better after the renovation.

We live in the old city area, surrounded by residential areas and a row of small shops on both sides of the road.

Because the residents are all here, the place is quite humane. You can see aunties carrying vegetables home and uncles sitting on recliners listening to operas leisurely.

And I think that families who keep a lot of plants at home must be people who know how to live.

There is no point in preserving such a dirty and messy old city area. It is well known that Shantou's development and changes will not be achieved without it.

By Langya |

There are many old buildings in Shantou city. After experiencing the invasion of foreign cultures, many architectural styles have incorporated some Western elements and combined with local characteristics. Looking at these old buildings many years later, they have a sense of age.

By NuoNuo |

The old city area is being rectified while retaining the original buildings and then reinforcing, renovating or removing them.

There are snacks along the way. The rice cake, oyster omelet and almond tea have become my favorites. The taste is excellent and the portions are large. The four of us were half full.

By johnhead |

Shantou's landmark old town! However, it is still under restoration. A large number of shops were opened during the Spring Festival. The shops are empty and have not been renovated yet! Come back in a year or so, you will be amazed!

There are several ancient temples around, which are worth visiting! Chaoshan temples are really unique, magnificent, exquisitely carved, and prosperous incense. The most important thing is that they do not charge admission. They are real temples, not fake temples that charge money! It is worth a visit!

By Taoist Pig Girl |

I visited during the Chinese New Year in 2018. There were so many people in the morning and evening, and the night view was beautiful! Some parts have not been fully renovated yet, and there are traffic restrictions, so you can only enter on foot. Many snacks are expensive, but there are also long queues.

By Ian Leung |

The old town is now undergoing major renovations, and the characteristics will be completely lost after the renovations.

By Sandy |

In the winter evening, the ancient city of Shantou shows the contrast between the former prosperity of Chaozhou merchants and their current decline, and the vicissitudes of history are everywhere.

By Little horse pokes wasp |

This was once a neighborhood built by the French, but it fell into disrepair and became very dilapidated. After undergoing exterior wall construction last year, it has regained some of its former characteristics, but it is still some distance away from true renovation.

By Wind |

It would be better to go there after the old city is renovated. It should be more beautiful than it is now. I was so happy. I ate the marshmallows that melted in my mouth in the small park. It brought back childhood memories. After strolling around Zhongshan Park, I unexpectedly found a leisure bar. The barbecue was delicious, crispy on the outside and tender and tasty on the inside... Hehe, foodies only have eyes for food.

By Janson |

Don't go to the old town recently! Construction is going on everywhere, and the roads are full of potholes. It really tested my driving skills! As the second most popular tourist attraction in Shantou, there are potholes and road construction, but I didn't see any prompts on the road. After driving in according to Gaode Map, I found that the road was blocked by construction waste. There is a reason why Shantou is still so poor as a special economic zone!

By He Anfei |

It will soon be renovated, and many delicacies and snacks will disappear. Friends who want to come will probably have to wait until 2019. It's a bit sad...

By Lijiang Lao Na |

Since the overall renovation of the old city has just begun, we are looking forward to what it will look like after the renovation.

By cherryketty |

If you are planning to visit the old town of Shantou in the near future, forget it, because the entire old town is under reconstruction and is still a large construction site with construction vehicles everywhere and the whole city is filled with dust!

By Son of the Wind |

The historical old neighborhood is very unique. It was under renovation when I went there. I liked it very much.

By Youqi smiling |

I followed the Baidu map to get there. It's all under reconstruction now. There's nothing there except a pavilion in the small park.

By Zheng Hewen |

The old town is well preserved and has a unique flavor, but it is under renovation now and it may take a few years to complete. I will come back later.

By ❤Queena_ |

When I went there, the small park in the old town was under renovation, so I didn't see its quaintness.

By geomachn |

When I went there, it was undergoing renovation and reconstruction. I believe it will be very beautiful after it is completed.

By Jun'er |

The characteristic of the old city is the arcade, which is full of historical flavor. The most famous department store was demolished halfway, but the demolition was stopped in time. There is also the public morality pavilion in the small park, which is also a landmark building. Now the whole old city is under renovation. It is also a great fun to enjoy the historical stories while eating Chaoshan special snacks here.

By Water Spirit Pearl |

The renovation has a huge impact. Not only is there nothing to see, but the bus is nowhere to be found, and the area is very large! It feels like there is construction going on for several kilometers. I really don't recommend coming here before it's completed. It's terrible.

By 🐰 Mr. Gray Rabbit |

This time I came just in time for renovation, so many of the features are no longer visible.

By Sa_Minmin |

When we went there, it was under renovation, so there were not many people and there were few snacks. Otherwise, we should be able to take more photos with stories and charm. We will go again when we have a chance after the renovation of the semi-colonial style buildings.

By 🎀Josie♒️clean🐼🎀 |

The old town is under renovation. The tour guide said it will be completed by the end of 2018, so don’t go there now. It’s all surrounded by green gauze. I feel sad after seeing it.

By BiGyellowBiGWong |

There are all these old and dilapidated houses nearby, and almost no one lives there. Some of the doors were open and we took a look ~ WOW! Dangerous buildings! Very cool structure. We who are engineers kept talking about, ah~ How can this wall still bear weight? ! Ah~ This staircase is so rotten!

By Bullfrog |

This place is really old and dilapidated, with a century-old arcade that feels like it will collapse at any time. Walking through it, you can experience the vicissitudes of Shantou over the past century, and the hidden delicacies are worth a try.

By Arsene Caddy |

When I went there, many old houses near the small park were fenced off, so I could only take pictures of the farther ones. Be careful when taking the bus, because the road is closed, the bus basically does not stop at the small park stop.

By momo |

My favorite attraction in Shantou city, the architecture is very unique. Unfortunately, many buildings around it were fenced off and under construction. I really like this kind of old streets and alleys.

By Maple Travel World |

As the earliest special economic zone opened in China, Shantou seems to have risen too early, but now it lacks stamina and seems to be lagging behind the trend.

The new city has tall buildings and shiny new elevator apartments, just like any other city. Back to the old city with a strong market atmosphere, that is the daily Shantou, the buildings are not high, the shops are compact, the roads are noisy, turn into the small streets and alleys, overhead are crisscrossing electric wires, dilapidated arcades, pedestrians come and go, speaking the incomprehensible Chaoshan dialect, car bells and horns sound, motorcycles whiz by, the sun shines neither soft nor hard, and the signs of restaurants extend to the road. Time here does not seem to change, it is hard to tell whether it has been a dozen years or decades, it has always been like this.

By Drunk cat |

The old town is really old. I don't understand why it hasn't been renovated for many years. Most of the buildings are dilapidated. But there are still many authentic foods. I just hate that my appetite is too small.

By The sky is big and the earth is big |

The small park is the center of Shantou's old city. The surrounding arcades and streets such as Anping Road, Shengping Road, and Guoping Road are fan-shaped and radially distributed. Together with the old neighborhoods "Four Yongs and One Shengping" on both sides, they are the historical witnesses of Shantou's "hundred-year commercial port". The former glory has become dilapidated after a hundred years, and it is unknown where it will go in the future.

Although the buildings here are dilapidated and even dangerous, they are very characteristic of the times and carry the atmosphere of that almost forgotten era! Sometimes dilapidated things also have different beauty. It depends on how you discover them.

Shantou Old Town is the place where I was born and raised. I have lived here since I was a child. From its former glory to its later decline, I have witnessed it all! Every Shantou person, especially those born in the 70s and 80s, always feels a sense of regret for the Old Town. They think it is very beautiful, but unfortunately it does not receive much attention and attention. So they can only watch it continue to decline.

The Old Town of Shantou, located near the pier on the north bank of Rongjiang River, is the historical memory of Shantou.

By Alex |

Although it feels old and shabby, walking inside it feels like traveling back to the 1960s and 1970s. The old buildings that have been stripped of all their glitz and glamour still stand in this modern city, adding a lot of historical sense to this place.

By vivilxl |

You must eat rice noodles. In fact, I think every place has its own characteristics. Eating is the characteristic of Chaoshan. You will find all kinds of food and drink when you walk through the streets and alleys. Go and explore the food and enjoy life. Now I also want to go home and eat rice noodles at home. I really miss home.

The old city area is also called the Small Park, which covers the Anping Road, Shengping Road, Guoping Road and other blocks around the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Pavilion (the Red House). It is the commercial and cultural center of Shantou's old city, and an irreplaceable landmark complex in Shantou, a century-old commercial port. Most of the arcade buildings on the old street were built in the 1920s and 1930s. The 7-story department store was formerly the "Nansheng Company" founded by the Overseas Chinese Group in 1932. It is one of the landmark buildings in the old mountain and the symbol of the small park. Today, the old street is no longer beautiful, and the collapsed and dilapidated ancient buildings stand there quietly, as if reminding passers-by of its former prosperity. Fortunately, some buildings are being repaired, and the newly renovated old post office is holding a stamp exhibition.

Although I am not from Shantou (Jiaoji), I love Shantou's long history very much, and I will go there when I have time. In order to share these beautiful buildings with more people, several of us students made a set of postcards for the small park, hoping to keep these beautiful buildings forever. This is the address of our students' new store (***?spm=***&id=524923918656), you can take a look if you are interested.
