The second time I came to Beihai Old Street, I walked from dusk to dark again. The flashing neon lights on the roadside flickered on the street, and I suddenly missed my mother. When I was a child, I also lived in an old street like this. At that time, my mother also had a complicated shop. She was always very busy, so she got old before she got young...

Unlike other children’s childhood, my mother’s shop was next to the only old bookstore on our street. When no one was playing with me, I would often spend an entire afternoon in a corner of the bookstore reading Sanmao and Yi Shu. Although I didn’t quite understand books like “Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights” at that time, I read them all… That was almost my entire elementary and junior high school years… Haha, and when it got dark and my mother called me home for dinner, the street would be like this, with neon lights on and the aroma of food in the air…

Beihai Old Town is the birthplace of Beihai City. It consists of three streets: the Centennial Old Street (Zhuhai Road), Shaji Street, and Zhongshan Road, with a total area of 0.4 square kilometers. It was built in 1821, with a total length of 1.27 kilometers and a width of 9 meters. It is the longest and best-preserved arcade building in Lingnan, China. It is praised by domestic and foreign experts and scholars as the "Annual of Modern Architecture". After the signing of the Sino-British "Yantai Treaty" in 1876, Beihai was forced to become one of the foreign trade ports. Influenced by Western culture, the biggest feature of this street is "the combination of Chinese and Western architectural styles, and the integration of Chinese and Western cultural life".

Beihai Old Street is an old street with a history of more than 100 years. It was built in 1883. It is 1.44 kilometers long and 9 meters wide. The street is full of Chinese and Western arcade-style buildings. Most of these buildings are two to three stories high. They are mainly influenced by the Western scroll-column buildings such as the consulates built in our city by Britain, France, Germany and other countries in the late 19th century. The window tops on the walls on both sides of the street are mostly scroll-arch structures. There are carved lines on the outer edge of the scroll arch and the top of the window column, with smooth lines and exquisite craftsmanship.

It was my second time to go to Beihai Old Street. 12 years later, the old street has become much more commercialized. In addition to snacks, there are also some small commodity stores on both sides. Aunt Li's Shrimp Cake Shop is the most popular snack on this street. It is freshly fried and delicious. The owner of Mingying Roll Noodle Shop speaks in a dialect that is hard to understand. The roll noodles can be eaten dry or with soup, and some chili. The 5 yuan breakfast is simply delicious!

I went to the old street at night and it was still raining.

I think the old street may be more lively at night than during the day, but it cannot show the charm of the old street, it may just be bustling.

The Old Street is a street of ancient buildings with a typical Southeast Asian style. I like it very much. However, the yellow line is dim at night, so I can’t take pictures of the historical sense and beautiful style of the buildings, which is a pity.

I hope I will have the opportunity to break this regret again in the future.

I don’t like the bustling old streets and the noisy crowds. I wanted to see the history and spring scenery of the old street houses, but I didn’t see it.

Has tried to show his architectural appearance, after all, mobile phone, even Leica.

I also ate the internet-famous shrimp cakes. I guess I had eaten other things before, so I took a bite and put it in my bag to take back.

A short visit to Beihai. Hope to see you again!

The century-old arcade combines three styles: Lingnan, French, and arcade. The reliefs on the columns, the patterns on the parapets, and the cast iron windows are all very exquisite. Focus on the "Street Soul" sculpture, the former site of the Republic of China Post Office, and the Catholic Church. Every brick hides a story~

📍Address information

Beihai Old Street mainly refers to Zhuhai Road, located in Haicheng District, Beihai City, starting from Waisha Island in the west and ending at Sichuan Road in the east, with a total length of 1.44 kilometers. Just search "Beihai Old Street (Zhuhai Road Entrance)" on the navigation. It is not far from Silver Beach and Qiaogang, so it is very suitable to arrange it on the first or last day of your trip to Beihai~

🎫Ticket Information

Pay attention! The whole old street is open to the public for free. You can visit the century-old arcades without spending a penny. Whether you want to take photos or feel the atmosphere of the city, there is no barrier. Shops and snack bars on the street are open to customers. You can eat from the beginning to the end of the street for 50 yuan. Students and budget travelers are delighted.

🕙Opening hours

The old street is open 24 hours a day, but the best time is from 10:00 to 22:00. In the morning, there are few people and it is quiet, suitable for taking photos and viewing architectural details; it starts to get lively after 4 pm, and various snack stalls are set up one after another; the best time to take photos is when the lights are on at night, and the outline of the arcade is breathtakingly beautiful under the warm yellow light🌃

Beihai's century-old street is like a silk ribbon that travels through time, gently swaying in the sea breeze of the Beibu Gulf. This old street, first built in 1821 and originally named "Shengping Street", was once the most prosperous commercial district in Beihai, witnessing the transformation of this coastal town from a fishing village to a commercial port.

The buildings in the old street are a treasure of the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures. The blue bricks and gray tiles reveal the simplicity of traditional Chinese architecture, while the arched doors and windows and carved lines exude the elegance of Western architecture. Every stone slab, brick and tile seem to be whispering, telling the legend of Beihai's commerce and the vicissitudes of history.

Before 1927, this place was a bustling center on the Beibu Gulf, with numerous shops and noisy traffic. Today, although the old street has lost its former noise, the mottled walls are engraved with the life marks of Beihai people for hundreds of years. Walking through it, you can seem to hear the echoes of history and feel the gentleness of time.

Beihai Old Street is not only a street, but also a memory bank of a city. It carries the beautiful crystallization of the collision of Eastern and Western cultures, and also tells the story of Beihai's journey from history to the future.

It's a pity that it's cloudy. It would be so beautiful if it was sunny.

On the second day of the Chinese New Year, we set out from Yongzhou and drove to Beihai. The whole journey was 730 kilometers, and there were no attractions. Fortunately, the road was good and the car was good. In addition, there were not many cars during the Spring Festival. We took two breaks on the way. The 9-hour journey was very smooth. We arrived at Beihai Hotel before 6 pm. After a short rest, we came to Beihai Old Street in the evening to eat and go shopping.

Beihai Old Street is an old street with nearly 200 years of history. It was first built in 1821. When it was first built, it was called Shengping Street, which was only 200 meters long and 4 meters wide. With the continuous development of various historical periods, it has now become a commercial old street with a length of 1.44 kilometers and a width of 9 meters. The streets are full of Chinese and Western arcade-style buildings. The arcade is a modern commercial and residential building. The ground floor of the building is set back from the street and a public pedestrian space is left. Arcades are common in South Asia, Southeast Asian countries, as well as coastal overseas Chinese hometowns in China such as Hainan Province, Fujian Province, Guangdong Province, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Most of these buildings are two to three stories high, and are mainly influenced by the Western scroll-column buildings such as the consulates built in our city by Britain, France, Germany and other countries in the late 19th century. The window tops on the walls on both sides of the street are mostly scroll-arch structures, and there are carved lines on the outer edges of the scroll-arches and the tops of the window columns, with smooth lines and exquisite craftsmanship. The decorations and reliefs of different styles on the wall facing the street form two groups of aerial sculpture corridors in the north and south. The arcades of these buildings facing the street are both the extension of the road to both sides and the extension of the pavement to the outside. People walking under the arcades can be sheltered from wind and rain and avoid the scorching sun; the square columns of the arcades are thick and heavy, quite in the style of ancient Roman architecture.

After breakfast, we went to Beihai Old Street. Navigated to the parking lot of the old street. My husband went to visit the old street, but I was not interested, so I went to the Waisha Wharf Scenic Area. It is about 1 km away from the old street. After crossing the seaside street, many fishermen just came back from the sea, and seafood dealers were waiting on the seaside street. The seafood here is cheap and fresh, and conch is only 18 yuan per catty (I bought it from the dealer). I bought two catties and cooked it myself in the rice cooker.

Beihai was opened as a port in the 19th century, so there are many old Western-style buildings, combined with the typical arcade style of the south. The mottled surface caused by humid weather is the mark of time. The old street is quite long from east to west, and it is suitable for leisurely passing time to walk slowly. There are also many snack and dessert shops. However, many shops on the street also sell pearls and specialties, and there are not many places worth visiting.

By seaman5009 |

Beihai is one of the earliest trading ports opened in the late Qing Dynasty. The old street is flanked by Chinese and Western arcade buildings with a history of 150 years. The old street is 1.3 kilometers long. The east entrance is at the site of the North Customs Building on Customs Road, and the west entrance is on Sichuan Road. The arcades on both sides of the old street can provide shade and shelter from rain. Stroll along the old street, look at the old houses, and visit small shops. Large patches of bougainvillea are blooming on the century-old walls, which are bright and eye-catching.

Beihai's characteristic street of historical buildings, where you can experience the slow life of Beihai people. Although the street buildings are old, they are very impressive and suitable for photography enthusiasts

A must-visit attraction in Beihai. Friends who like taking photos can take photos for a long time here. The historical district is quite impressive.

By WinKing |

Beihai Old Street generally refers to Zhongshan Road and Zhuhai Road. The old street was formed around 1927, but its origin can be traced back to the early 19th century. Since then, a number of Western-style buildings have been built in Beihai. After more than half a century of cultural integration, the arcade old street we see today has finally been formed. These arcades are not simply copies of Western buildings. From the perspective of deep cultural roots, they are filled with the blood of the splendid civilization of the Chinese nation and are a beautiful crystallization of the collision of Eastern and Western cultures.

The old town architecture is quite unique, but there is nothing to see in the shops. I wanted to buy postcards and food twice, but no one was watching the shop. I don't know where the boss went... It was quite depressed. Then I went to my mother-in-law's dessert shop. I couldn't get used to fried food and it felt too greasy. The drinks were okay, but quite expensive. Figure 5, a total of 24 yuan.

By LZY |

The mottled walls of the buildings reveal the vicissitudes of this old street. There are many food stores here, which integrate sightseeing and food. It is a must-see attraction in Beihai.

By 々 |

The architecture of the old street is very special and exotic. There are many snack shops on the road just after entering the old street, selling roast meat, sweet soup, chicken rice, duck rice... Unlike the shops on the main street of the scenic area with some shining signs and shouting clerks, these shops are more populated by locals, grandfathers eating duck rice and drinking wine, children asking for shrimp cakes, white-collar workers who just got off work, these shops have more fireworks because of them.

By Wang.N |

The building is very unique. Pay attention to the fishermen at the street corner. It is very cheap and affordable. You can eat grilled oysters and snails. Pay attention to whether the ingredients are fresh.

By China-TravelNote users |

We went there at the beginning of the year and the weather was very good. It should have been the peak season and there were many people on the street, and the buildings were very old. Due to time constraints, we only walked halfway and did not walk from the beginning to the end of the street.

By Playmates |

Beihai Old Street is very long. Maybe it’s the off-season, so there are not many people here, which is really comfortable.

By Maggie travel |

This is an old street with a strong commercial atmosphere, but after all, it is a tourist street, so let's check in.

By Ajun |

I came here at night. It's a small commodity street! The shrimp cakes are delicious. If you want to eat grilled oysters, you should go to a crowded store. The chance of hitting a landmine will be smaller!

By silver |

Go straight along Sichuan Road. You will see Beihai Old Street - Zhuhai West Road. Most of the buildings on both sides of the old street are arcade-style. There are various old shops and specialty shops where you can stroll around at leisure. I bought my Laoyou Coffee here.

By Gong Teng Teng |

It still has a unique natural and old feel. It's good for taking photos. But the shops are rarely open during the day. It's very hot in September.

By I want omelette without egg |

A very long street with a sense of age. There are shops selling snacks and souvenirs.

By Po |

A very distinctive old street. It was off-season when I went there. It was very pleasant to stroll along the street.

By nn |

Although it is a bit commercialized, the characteristics of the arcade are still there, and my parents had a lot of fun playing there.

By Cocoqi |

I like this neighborhood very much. It is quaint and is a good choice for taking photos, eating, drinking and strolling. I went there during the Spring Festival. Coconuts are 10 yuan, cuttlefish balls are 5 yuan, and oysters and scallops are 20 yuan a dozen. It is more fun if there are fewer people in the off-season.

By Vampire |

There are many people on the New Year's Day. The typical Nanyang-style streets are lined with arcades on both sides.

It just feels a bit messy. The whole Beihai feels a bit dirty.

By raisin |

My first impression of the old street was that it was somewhat similar to Beijing Road in Guangzhou. Two rows of old, paint-peeling buildings stretched out into a street that seemed to have no end. The signs hanging on the side seemed to take people on a time machine back to Shanghai during the Republic of China period. Although the weather was gloomy, the old street was still crowded with tourists, including many Europeans and Americans with high noses and deep eyes, which shows that Beihai is well-known.

The first thing we did when we entered the old street was to buy shrimp cakes. As the saying goes, if you don’t eat shrimp cakes, you haven’t been to the old street.

In addition to the shrimp cakes that can be eaten, pearls that can only be seen are also a major feature of the old street. In the old street, one out of every four shops sells various pearl jewelry. The prices are not expensive. As for the authenticity, it depends on the person. The only ones that can compete with the power of the pearl shops are the large and small seafood restaurants. A dozen oysters costs 10 yuan, which is a great benefit to the people.

In front of almost every seafood restaurant there were waiters shouting to attract customers. Every time Lao Zhang and I passed by one, we felt like we had just passed a brothel. The shouts of every household were enthusiastic and loud. It was difficult for us to make a choice. Finally, we walked into a comprehensive store that sold both noodles and desserts. We ordered a bowl of shredded chicken noodles, a box of fried yogurt and a bottle of Sprite. The price was not affordable and the food tasted average. Only the soup in the noodles pleased me a little.

By Vito Ho |

The food is unique but! There are not many varieties, basically the same things are sold every two steps. There are also many shops selling pearls! The environment is quite unique, but they are all repetitive. You can go. But if you want to find something different, you may really need to be more careful (I saw a few unique shops on the map, but they are far away and you have to walk a long way)

By Hazy moonlight FOTO |

The current Beihai Old Street, except for the old-style buildings, has become a tourist street with Beihai characteristics. Tourists must visit it.

By Halfway monk |

The building is really old, very nice, a good place to take pictures, making people feel like they are in a foreign country. Aunt Li's shrimp cake shop has a queue, but Aunt Li's shrimp cake tastes almost the same as other shops' shrimp cakes, there is no difference, I queued up to catch the hot spot

By Mu Yi |

The old houses in the old street have not been modernized too much, and have a sense of historical vicissitudes and heaviness. There are few people during the day, but it will be very lively at night.

By Vicky |

I came here at night and it was very lively. There are bars, restaurants, specialty shops, etc. The arcades on both sides really take people back to the Republic of China era, especially the European-style decoration on the second floor, which makes people think about what happened in these streets and alleys in the past. It is worth a visit.

By Full of money |

A typical old street with arcade style, where you can eat and shop, it is a must-visit place when you come to Beihai.

There are many seafood food stalls on Beihai Old Street. Don't listen to the driver's words. This place is for locals and very cheap. You can eat 2-3 meals for the price of one meal. Then he took you to a store. The driver didn't walk around the store. We two women ordered half a pound of salt and pepper shrimps, two shrimps! Two crabs! Shellfish, one vegetable cost 469, two crabs cost 298. After we entered the store, we saw many drivers sending people to this store. Don't be fooled again.

By The kid's chatter |

The old street is a real old street, and you can see traces of history. If all the signs were changed to traditional Chinese characters, it would feel like being in Hong Kong, although I have never been to Hong Kong, but it is a feeling.

Also, there is only one main street in the old street, so you must walk around before deciding where to eat and drink.

The old street is next to the seaside. After shopping, we walked along the beach. The wind was very strong and there was a strong fishy smell. At that time, I thought it was the smell of the sea breeze.

By Zhang Xiaoyu is on the road |

The old street under the afterglow of the sunset has a similar architectural style to the arcades in Guangzhou and Xiamen. There are many shops on the street, which look good. There is also a shrimp cake shop that has been on the tip of a Chinese tongue, but there are too many people, so we didn't eat there. The cuttlefish balls sold there are delicious~

By Cindy |

It was the Mid-Autumn Festival, so there weren't many people on the street, which was great! The old street was full of dilapidated houses, and if it wasn't turned into a tourist attraction, I think it would be a great place to shoot a horror movie.

By Grind |

The typical arcade old street has many popular snacks. When there are not many people, renting an electric bike or a shared bike will save energy. The street is long and worth visiting. It is much better than some ancient towns. Popular shrimp cakes, whole squid cakes, sea stone flowers (the food mentioned in the documentary "Shunde Taste" [not this one, but they are sold], it is not easy to make a bowl, you must eat it), there is a popular late-night canteen, you can go there to check in. There are various restaurants outside the old street, please think twice about eating seafood. Even I, a Sichuanese, can spend 100 yuan on two very ordinary dishes in a Sichuan restaurant. But if you eat noodles, eat whatever you want, I love it.

By Gunbao. Hehe 😜 |

There is nothing surprising here, with its mix of local buildings and pure commercialism. Only the legendary shrimp cakes were satisfying. I even went to the wrong store, as there were similar signs all over the street, and you would be confused if you were not careful.

By Ottogo |

You must go to the Old Street and the Folk Street at night. It is not fun during the day and there is little food. There are many food stalls in the Old Street, it depends on whether you can choose. Many people go to the street next to it where there are many seafood vendors to buy and process them. The processing fees are almost the same. Grilled oysters are very cheap. The front half of the Old Street is basically souvenirs and the back is the food stalls.

By Wind without trace |

In fact, what you see and eat is no longer important at this time. What is important is the nostalgic feeling for the old people, old things, old tastes and old buildings that have withstood the erosion and kneading of time. The memory of modern cities is difficult to distinguish from buildings, so these old streets and old buildings are more precious, because only from them can you vaguely distinguish the original ingenuity and elegance.

By Cat walking on colorful clouds |

In 2005, it was a rather run-down but original arcade street with several streets. It was not very popular, but it had the Nanyang style of the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. Now, more than ten years have passed, maybe it has been repaired or demolished. I don’t know what it looks like now.

Beihai Old Street generally refers to Zhuhai Road and Zhongshan Road. The road is not long, and both sides of the street are arcade-style buildings that combine Chinese and Western styles. There is a sense of vicissitudes under the mottled appearance. There are many pearl shops in the old street, and pearl powder is processed on site. In addition, there are some specialty shops, dessert shops, snack shops, etc.

It's a bit too commercial, but the buildings are very unique and nice to take pictures. Friends who like photography can go and have a look. You can also see the sea nearby, but you can't play in the water. 😊

By China-TravelNote users |

The various old houses on the old street are still worth seeing. If you bring children, it is not very crowded. Another reason is that it is cooler and cheaper. However, there are many restaurants near Beihai that overcharge customers. As long as you are not careful, you will suffer a loss and affect your mood. My group of 5 adults and 4 children were prepared to eat more than 500 yuan, but they were taken to the following restaurant by a tricycle. 3 dishes cost 540 yuan. They said there was no menu, which means there was no unit price. Then a fish was killed immediately before you weighed it, and it cost more than 300 yuan. We went to Qiaogang a few days ago, and 8 dishes including a grouper were only 540. Be careful with the following restaurant! A reminder of conscience!

There are other reasons for not finishing walking through Beihai Old Street, that is, the weather is too hot, and the shops on the street are repeated, so there is no need to move forward (so I was a little disappointed when I was here). However, there is still beauty! The architecture here is unique, a bit Western-style, and full of a sense of age. The most sold items on the street should be pearl-related products, pearl powder, pearl accessories, etc., and there are also some clothing and snacks.

You can come a little later in the afternoon to take photos, and eat all the way in the evening: shrimp cakes, cuttlefish balls, various specialty shops, and bought a pair of fish shoes for my son, he loves it very much!!!

The highlight is Nanyang Qiaolou, where some of the special snacks taste delicious.

I quite like the architectural style of the old street. According to the guide, it was built by overseas Chinese who returned from Southeast Asia. They do business downstairs and live upstairs. It seems that they live a happy life. However, I saw others say that many buildings upstairs are in disrepair and cannot be lived in, which is a pity. The contrast between the old and new buildings is very strong, and the style of the new decoration is really abrupt.

One side seems to be under renovation. I hope to see its new side next time I come. Haha.

The ancient buildings here retain their original appearance and there are many special snacks.

The characteristic of the old street is that it is very nice for taking photos. I met two groups of people taking wedding photos. There were a lot of people queuing up to check in for shrimp cakes. The fresh coconut juice was delicious. There was nothing much to buy, so I bought a few small conches for the kids to play with. The main problem was that the toilets had bad reviews. We couldn't find a public toilet. Finally, we found a private toilet in a small alley. Just throw a dollar in the small box when you come out.

Just like the night market, it doesn’t feel very fun. People who don’t like shopping are better off not going there.

Worth a look, but overall it's just so-so, the seafood barbecue is very cheap.

An old street, a street of specialties, without too many branches, with a nice atmosphere. It's okay to stroll around and have a shrimp cake supper, but it's not recommended to buy specialties here.

It is indeed an old street, and some of the buildings seem to be very old.

The old street is crowded and lively at night. Although the old street is old and the buildings are old, many floors are rented out to businesses selling snacks, souvenirs, specialties and the like.

The most amazing thing is that for some reason there are people selling musical instruments and drums...

So in fact, the old street is the kind of old street that sells souvenirs that can be found in every city. It is called Nanluoguxiang in Beijing and Kuanzhai Alley in Chengdu.

The old street the next morning was much quieter than the previous night, with a more historical feel, and everywhere felt old, much like Guangdong hundreds of years ago.
