Tanhualin

There are many coffee shops and specialty stores in the area north of Wuchang Garden Hill, south of Fenghuang Hill, from Zhongshan Road in the east to Desheng Bridge in the west.
The 1,200-meter-long block is home to dozens of century-old buildings. It is an old street that was gradually formed after the expansion of Wuchang City in 1371.
The main attractions include Renji Hospital, Wenhua Academy, and the Tomb of Ten Thousand Infants in the Orphanage. Every brick and tile is engraved with the historical memory of old Wuhan.
Various schools of architecture are located here, where Chinese and Western cultures converge. The century-old street has remained unchanged through wind and rain and has now become a literary and artistic district in Wuhan.

I walked through the alleys and hutongs from Zhonghua Road, and within a few hundred meters I saw the traffic sign for "Tanhualin".

But I was a little confused. I didn't do any research before coming here, and I didn't know what kind of tourist attraction Tanhualin was. I thought it was a forest similar to a park. So even when I saw the road sign and the construction around the road sign, I was still confused.

Later, I asked passers-by and found out that "Tanhualin" is a street preserved from the Republic of China, so we can call it an old street.

We arrived at Tanhualin around 8 o'clock in the morning. Most of the shops were closed, and it was very cold with the snow falling silently.

I kind of regretted being lazy after finishing the work because I was tired. Otherwise, I could have walked a few thousand more steps to appreciate the night view of Tanhualin. It should be colorful and lively, right? (I like taking photos of night views)

This street is not long, about 1,000 meters. Judging from the shops on both sides, it should be similar to the old streets in many cities, such as the Kuanzhai Alley in Chengdu, Yandaixie Street and Nanluoguxiang in Beijing, etc.

Since the doors were closed, I didn't stay long and just took a few photos.

There are quite a few former residences of celebrities on this street, but forgive my ignorance, I don’t know most of the owners of the former residences with labels on them, so I have lost interest.

I don't know if there was any activity at the church, but early in the morning there were young men and women lining up at the door to welcome someone.

There is a primary school on Tanhualin Street. From a distance, I thought it looked like the Five Avenues in Tianjin, a mansion of someone in the past. When I got closer, I realized it was a primary school.

Isn't it bad for primary schools to be in such a commercial place? Not only is it annoying, but it also costs money to go to and from school.

After a brief walk around, I followed "Rouge Road" and headed towards the Xinhai Revolution Memorial Hall.

In Tanhualin, you can take photos and stroll around, then find a small shop and enjoy an afternoon with the aroma of coffee. There are many interesting creative shops on the street, selling some handicrafts, tourist souvenirs and so on.

There are many cafes and creative shops, but there are still many locals setting up stalls on the streets, selling simple cakes, breakfast snacks, and small gadgets that were common in childhood. Although the main focus is on literature and art, it still maintains a local flavor.

Old Wuhan Soda, I admit that I was attracted by the sissy dragon... Different flavors of soda are okay to try.

Nowadays, no matter where you go when traveling in China, there are always a few places that are labeled as artistic and fresh, and finally turned into a street that can only be described as artistic. Then countless young people, whether Internet celebrities or not, rush to check in and take photos here, but they also ignore the slow life that should be enjoyed.

Unlike the cities I have visited before, Tanhualin seems to have a different charm because it still retains some old buildings. This is a rare preservation of the past history, traditional culture, and the feelings of the locals under the current trend of continuous renovation, which is combined with the concept of literary and artistic freshness, making people feel closer.

The area around Tanhualin has a long history. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was the location of the Governor's Office and the County Government. In the late Qing Dynasty, a large number of missionaries preached and taught here, thus building a number of buildings with Western characteristics. There are more than 50 modern historical buildings here, including churches, hospitals, schools, city walls, etc. Information about these historical buildings can be found on the guide board at one end of the street.

Tanhualin is located between the northern foot of Huayuan Mountain and the southern foot of Crab Cape (also known as Chengshan) within the city wall, and runs east-west along the two mountains. Historically, Tanhualin refers to the eastern section connected to the exit of Gejiaying. Now it has become a popular photo spot and a great place for photographers to take pictures. In addition, there are many coffee shops, snack bars, gift shops and various commodity stores on Tanhualin Street. Here, you can not only take satisfactory photos, but also eat, drink, play and shop along the way.

By Ajiu's travel diary |

When it comes to the literary and artistic districts in Wuhan, Tanhualin is definitely one of the best.

On this street, the catering industry occupies more than half of the space, and there are also quite a few small-scale coffee shops, which seem to be designed specifically for literary young people to check in.

Walking through the winding alleys of Tanhualin, you can see dozens of modern historical buildings that are more than a hundred years old. The classic old buildings make people feel as if they can touch the pulse of history.

Although the old street has gradually taken on a new look, I hope it can still retain its original flavor in the end.

Tan Hualin, the name sounds poetic. It is located in the northeast corner of the old city of Wuchang District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province, adjacent to Shahu Lake in the north and the Yangtze River in the west. It is located between the north side of Huayuan Mountain and the Crab Armor Zone within the city wall. It is about 1.2 kilometers long and covers an area of about 1 square kilometer. It has a history of more than 600 years.

Transportation:

Take Metro Line 5 to Tanhualin Wushengmen Station, walk east from the exit, and you will see the sign for Tanhualin not far away. If you take Metro Line 2, get off at Crab Cape, exit from Exit A2, and walk through Fanyuehui to reach Tanhualin Street. I really don't recommend driving here, as parking spaces are tight and it takes time and energy to find a parking space, which affects your mood for sightseeing.

Recommended attractions

Old Street: As soon as I stepped into the old street, I was deeply attracted by the historical buildings. There are more than 50 excellent historical and cultural buildings with a history of over 100 years hidden here, and each one seems to be telling stories of the past. I especially recommend you to visit the former site of Wenhua Academy, which is the earliest school opened by foreign churches in Wuhan and the earliest church school in Hubei Province. It is now the site of Hubei University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

This time I can only say that I didn't order well, because Wuhan is going to hold the Military World Games, and everywhere is being renovated, including Tanhualin, so most of the shops we saw were covered with dense mesh, which really didn't look beautiful o(╥﹏╥)o. I went into a few small shops that were quite unique, with a lot of graffiti on the walls. If it weren't for the decoration, it would have been a beautiful place.

By Jeffrey |

I took a taxi to Tanhualin at about 5 o'clock. At this time, Tanhualin was under renovation for the military sports meeting, so only a part of it was open for visiting. The weather was hot, so I was a little disappointed. I visited for less than an hour and took another taxi to Hubu Lane.

By Timothy |

An absolutely niche literary and artistic travel destination, with Republican-era churches and literary shops, history and humanities, as well as small streets and alleys frequented by students from an art school, a medical university, and a key middle school.

By Gui Xiaorui |

I went to Tanhualin early in the morning. It was drizzling and the streets were deserted. There were a few art shops open. Maybe it would be more interesting on a sunny day and later in the day.

By Half a cup of Coke |

A very exquisite snack street with many beautiful things. Many shops are also very exquisite. It is also a good choice to buy some things to take away. However, because I went there during the Qingming Festival, it was raining when I was visiting Tanhualin, so I didn't visit it seriously.

By 59697 |

This street is more suitable for young people to take artistic photos. The small shops on the street are not very special. When walking through the streets and alleys on the way back to the hotel, the breath of life hits you in the face, which seems to be two different worlds from Tanhualin.

Wuhan Tanhualin: It is a village in the city. Some small shops that attract young people are opened in the old houses. It is very small, with few shops and no special features. It is basically a place for tourists to check in! There is no need to come! There are no repeat customers! Determined!

By Zhiqian's Qingxi |

The photos are nice, but the food is really not good. I wanted to have a drink while shopping but couldn't find any special drinks. The decoration of the shop is very good, but it is too expensive! !

By Mango, be happy. |

There are so many people. It's just one street with many nice shops.

By Hub |

I don't think it has much special features. It's not long and the walk is over. The things are quite expensive. The most frustrating thing is that cars can enter. The narrow road itself makes it difficult to walk around and take pictures freely.

By Yu Da Gou |

Very good, I recommend you to go there if you have time.

By Runaway Snail |

It's getting worse and worse. It used to be a very artistic place a few years ago, but now it's just an ordinary street with food and drinks, but the food there is not cheap and not very special.

By Spring Snow Bottle |

If you have time, you can take a leisurely stroll. There are many unique small shops, especially a bookstore called "Shijian Bookstore". It has a careful layout, is quiet and comfortable, and has solo performances in the evening. It is recommended.

It is not far from Liangdao Street. You can come here to eat delicious food. There are also many delicious foods in Tanhualin. This is the Wuhan Art Street that was particularly popular in the past few years. However, what attracted me here were not the art shops here, but the old buildings, Qu Ya Ge Museum, and the School of Literature in Hubei University of Chinese Medicine.

By Guizi GUIZEE |

There are quite a lot of people going to Tanhualin. I heard from friends that this is a popular check-in spot. People who come to Wuhan want to come here for a stroll. There are many literary shops selling all kinds of crafts and handicrafts. Of course, there are also some special coffee shops located inside.

This is a free attraction. Tan Hualin is located in the western part of Wuchang District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province, next to Hubei University of Chinese Medicine. It is located between the northern foot of Huayuan Mountain and the southern foot of Crab Cape (also known as Chengshan) within the city wall, and runs east-west along the two mountains. Historically, Tan Hualin refers to the area east of the exit of Gejiaying. The current Tan Hualin Street is located north of Huayuan Mountain in Wuchang and south of Fenghuang Mountain. It starts from Zhongshan Road in the east and ends at Desheng Bridge in the west. It is 1,200 meters long. It is an old street that was gradually formed after the expansion of Wuchang City in the fourth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1371).

By Jie Minghao |

It is a quiet old street of art. There are various art shops and cafes on both sides of the street. Tanhualin is similar to Nanluoguxiang in Beijing, and there are also many art shops. Although Tanhualin is not short, these shops are concentrated at the west end of the street, unlike Nanluoguxiang where the whole street is full of shops.

By Hericium erinaceus |

I went there on October 1, 2017. This is a place I want to go again.

By DMG Dog |

Tanhualin is not very big, it is just a block, but it is home to dozens of nearly 100-year-old Wuhan buildings. Today, Tanhualin is more like the kind of literary streets that can be found in many cities, with internet celebrity stores, various small shops selling cultural and creative products, and coffee shops that sell literary and artistic sentiments.

Estimated visiting time: 1-2h (basically just take photos and check in. Many old-school buildings are surrounded by walls. I don’t know why, but I heard from classmates who studied in Wuhan that they were only surrounded in recent years).

You can find Tanhualin by following the signposts. At first glance, it is crowded with tourists, most of whom are young people in their twenties.

Cultural and creative stores can be found everywhere.

By Zhou Xiaoxiaoci 🔅 |

Recommendation index: five stars. Tanhualin is not far from Liangdao Street, and it takes about a quarter of an hour to walk there. Once you enter, you will find a lot of snacks, as well as sculptures of real people (at first glance, you might think they are sculptures, but they are actually real people in costume), and countless small shops. Almost every small shop is very fresh and small, and it is simply the favorite of literary youth. At the beginning, I was in a hurry to take pictures. My classmates watched me shuttle from one store to another, and then from one store to another. Finally, I got tired halfway through the shopping because I found that every store had the same postcard wall. My classmates also witnessed the process of me going from enjoying it to just glancing at it. But I have to say that Tanhualin gave me a great feeling at the beginning.

By YY... |

It's just a street full of young men and women eating and shopping. I don't recommend it.

By Chenchen |

Tanhualin gave me the feeling that there was no gate, just a long street with literary and fresh shops scattered on both sides, which was a good place for taking photos. But the heavy rain had ruined our idea of posing for photos.

By Tian D |

Tanhualin is a street favored by literary and artistic young people. There are many handicraft and small jewelry stores, as well as various small coffee shops. It is a bit similar to Gulangyu in Xiamen, but not as commercialized as the current Gulangyu. There are no Internet celebrity stores here. In comparison, this place is more quaint. The buildings here also look a bit old, reflecting the flavor of old Wuhan.

Primary schools are all quaint!

Before I came here, some people said that Tanhualin was not interesting. I will know whether it is interesting or not after I come here.

By Joyful |

If I were to summarize the characteristics of Tanhualin, I think it is a small street with a strong natural and cultural atmosphere, full of artistic and cultural atmosphere. The street is not long, just right for walking. There are buildings of various schools, where Chinese and Western cultures meet, and the Chinese and foreigners live side by side, which also shows the unique regional characteristics.

There is a bronze statue of an artist at the intersection, who will enthusiastically invite you to take photos. If you are interested, that's fine. If not, don't get close. Otherwise, after you pose for photos, a QR code will magically appear from nowhere. Please scan the code to pay.

Tanhualin is a place of literature and art, and is very popular among young people with literary tastes. Bookstores and cafes are hidden in the old streets. The poetic and picturesque atmosphere is perfectly integrated with life.

By Ear |

The best time to visit Tanhualin is from March to May or from September to November. The weather is relatively good during this period, which is the best time to visit. Tanhualin is an old street with residents living in it, so try not to disturb the residents when you visit it. And some ancient buildings that are not open to the public are still recommended for tourists not to enter.

By DrZou |

It's a hipster paradise with many coffee shops and gadget shops. You can also get stamps. The small streets are quite pleasant.

Tanhualin is a street where young artists gather in Wuhan. There are many small bars, bookstores, etc. It is not very big. It takes 2 hours to walk around. You can find a small bar to sit and enjoy the quietness of this moment.

By Supreme Power |

A street full of artistic atmosphere, with many artistic shops and various places suitable for pretentious photos. However, because they are all small alleys, there are more people. But it is still a small street with more characteristics.

By Alernm |

Tanhualin is a popular check-in and photo-taking spot in Wuhan. The short street takes you to appreciate different buildings and scenery, and experience the leisurely life of the city of Wuhan.

By Ning Xiaoxin |

After leaving the Provincial Museum, it was still a long time before we caught the train to Enshi in the evening, and my postcard task was not yet completed, so I took a taxi to visit Tanhualin, which is said to have a strong literary and artistic atmosphere in Wuhan. It was much smaller than I imagined, and there were several small shops selling postcards and other souvenirs along the way. In the end, I chose Maokong, ordered a cup of coffee, and started writing my postcards.

Tanhualin is a small place suitable for young couples and young artists.

By Gu Guzi |

A very artistic street, suitable for the tastes of us young and middle-aged people

By Piglet Exhibition |

When we arrived at Tanhualin, we first saw a commercial pedestrian street, which was stylishly decorated and full of petty-bourgeois commercial stores. We had originally planned to have lunch here, but after a walk around, we found that they were all homogeneous stores, and there was no local specialty, so we left the pedestrian street and continued to follow the crowd, passing a particularly crowded snack street, then we came to Tanhualin's Xiaoshipai, and then we would have more room if we walked forward.

Probably because there were no vendors setting up stalls in the front, the last section of the road was full of small shops decorated with graffiti. The whole thing was embedded outside a residential area. Looking up, you can tell that this is a residential area. The overall interest was a bit poor. The exit was not far from Hubu Lane. Turning into a small alley, it was like a market, with a row of vendors like in a vegetable market. When you walked out of the vegetable market, you saw the streets we were familiar with.

The many Western-style buildings, celebrity villas, and ancient streets and alleys in Tanhualin are indescribably beautiful. Really, if you come to Tanhualin, you must go there on a sunny day and at noon. If you come at night, you won't see anything at all. Where is the art? !

By Otaku Loves Traveling |

Tanhualin is indeed quite artistic, but it is no longer consistent with the pictures on the Internet. Many places are gone, and some places are surrounded by walls. However, there are still many places to take pictures. It is really good to walk around Tanhualin and find a place to eat.

By Dai Dai |

If you come here because of its reputation, you will definitely leave disappointed...

By Traveler's Kindness |

Tanhualin has nice scenery. I have walked through many cultural streets like this, but some of the small shops there are of very poor quality. There is a shop called Mr. Bei. The boss lady has very low quality, speaks very rudely, and judges people by appearance. I ate there with my children, and she actually yelled at the children; the banana milk particles were too big, and the tube was too thin, so I couldn’t suck it out; there were no pictures of the dishes inside, and they asked me to pay first, which felt a bit like a black shop; the steak was very unprofessional, the quantity was not enough to eat, there was only a little fruit, no eggs and pasta; the pasta was very spicy and had chili peppers; the pizza was not cooked and was burnt. I have never encountered such a shop, there is no detailed information, no invoice, and even no paper towels. I will definitely regret it after eating there, and I am in a bad mood. I thought it is not easy to do business, so I didn’t argue. I hope the boss lady can improve her quality, make the meal well, and don’t tarnish the reputation of Tanhualin.

By Peaches and plums do not speak |

Many people come here not to see the remains of the Cultural Academy in Hubei University of Chinese Medicine, nor to visit the foreign-style Tanhualin No. 32, but to come here for the literary style. From the store to the snacks, they all reveal the style of literary youth. There are cool and refreshing fried yogurt, and fragrant flower cakes. Or when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, you can occasionally see beautiful women wearing kimonos taking cool photos. This place is similar to Tianzifang in Shanghai, especially for literary youth, you must come and see it. This is their paradise!

As for prices, they are basically affordable.

I like the slogan of a small shop: "Three thousand prosperous people are not as good as a cup of tea." Many people outside the circle say that literary youth are poor and show off. I don't think so. This is a kind of sentiment, a pure love that has not been penetrated by the greasy world.

By Happiness(*^__^*) |

It’s a very fresh and artistic place. Walking slowly on the street, there are romantic coffee shops all around. I feel like I have suddenly turned into a literary young man!

By Willy |

I used to think that Nanluoguxiang, which is famous for its literary and artistic atmosphere, mainly attracts tourists and there are not many places to visit. After visiting Tanhualin this time, I felt that Nanluoguxiang is better in terms of overall appearance and popularity. Although some small shops in Tanhualin have very beautiful appearance and full of literary and artistic atmosphere, the overall feeling of the street is not very good. These high-value shops are arranged in a scattered and unsystematic manner, which has some impact on the overall visual effect. Moreover, as a tourist attraction, Tanhualin is indeed not very popular, and there are many fewer tourists than expected.

By lisa |

A very literary and fresh place. The scenic area is not very big. You can stroll around slowly. The appearance and interior decoration styles of the shops are different, but they are all comfortable and pleasing to the eye. They have their own characteristics. Many shops sell hand-painted postcards of popular attractions and buildings in Wuhan, various small flower bookmarks, etc. Many shops have postcard walls to record your mood and leave your footprints. Many years later, when you look back at yourself at that time, you don’t know what the scene will be like. Near the exit, there will be old people sitting and waiting to make sugar figures for tourists on the spot, people pushing carts to sell milk-flavored pies, and people selling peeled water chestnuts, bowl cakes, and of course bean skin and small potatoes.

By Rudeandcc |

Walk out of Hubu Lane for ten minutes and you will pass through a small alley where there are some people selling vegetables. It is a small market. After passing through the vegetable market, you will arrive at Tanhualin~

This is a small and fresh paradise, many of which are students. Here, each store is very unique. You will stop for each exquisite small commodity and unknowingly forget the time. Every corner here seems to have a story, waiting for you to slowly discover~

You can find a small shop, sit down and write postcards, or have a cup of coffee and enjoy a quiet afternoon.

A place that young people with artistic tastes absolutely cannot miss! A very beautiful and artistic neighborhood, close to Wuhan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with many beautiful girls. The street photos taken casually are all very beautiful, with cats and dogs all over the street, all very friendly. On the way here, the driver said that Tanhualin is not big, only about 200 meters, and I believed it, but when I got there, I found out that, yes, one street is 200 meters, but there are more than five or six streets crisscrossing here...

I didn't see any multi-style buildings, Chinese and Western cultures, or century-old streets. When I looked up, I always saw the surging crowds, the familiar tourist snacks, and the dazzling array of Yiwu small commodities. Oh my god, another Gulangyu Island, fortunately there were no slippers, long skirts, and straw hats all over the floor.

I just feel very sorry that a city’s imprint has been reduced to a noisy “strange thing” due to excessive commercial development and creation.

Well, there is no clear sign. It would be embarrassing if you accidentally walked into a residential area. It's just some popular online stores. Remember to avoid this person if you see him! It scared me.

Maybe people here get up late, so there weren't many people, but most of the shops were open, so it felt pretty good, so we ate and drank, it was very bourgeois, my daughter and husband liked it very much, it felt good.

A nice commercial street. The freshly brewed milk tea is still fresh in my memory. It's pretty good.

Since I went to Tanhualin at night, I didn't smell the coffee aroma all over the street. But it was very quiet at night and it felt good.
