Hengshan Mountain, also known as Nanyue, is one of the Five Great Mountains in my country. It is famous for its magnificent natural scenery and cultural landscapes where Buddhism and Taoism coexist. It is known as the "Chinese Longevity Mountain".
The scenic area is full of verdant valleys, waterfalls and springs, exuding a sense of tranquility. The scattered temples add a lot of pious charm to Hengshan.
Hengshan is a holy place of Chinese Buddhism. It is the origin of the Southern School of Zen Buddhism. The Nanyue School of the Southern School was founded here.
The first day of the eighth lunar month every year is the birthday of the "Nanyue Emperor". On that day, sometimes as many as 100,000 believers come to Hengshan to pay homage to the emperor. From December to early February of the following year, you can enjoy the famous Hengshan rime.

The Hengshan ticket is very reasonable, half price 40 yuan~
After checking the ticket, you will enter the scenic area. The whole way is a combination of roads and steps. Walking on the steps is equivalent to a "small path that can only be walked by people". If you don't want to climb the stairs, you can take a longer detour and walk on the road. There are not many people hiking. Most of them take the scenic bus directly to Nantianmen. However, the atmosphere of the hiking trail in Hengshan is very good. There is only one road to walk on, which gives people a very safe and secure feeling.
You will see various temples throughout the journey, and you can find out their locations by comparing them with the map.
The hiking time was long... The difficulty was much lower than we thought, but it took a long time, a full five hours~
We had signed up for a group tour, so the itinerary was pretty fixed, first to the Nanyue Temple, then to eat, and then to climb Mount Heng. This arrangement was fine on non-holidays, but it became a problem during the Spring Festival, mainly because the climbing time was late. We came out of the dining area at around 2:00 pm to line up for the scenic spot bus. Normally, the line only takes about 15 to half an hour, but it was not right during the Spring Festival. There were really a lot of tourists climbing the mountain in the first month of the year, and the line was said to take 3 hours (we didn't line up later, and it was actually a little more than 2 hours).
After waiting in line for about a quarter of an hour, some people couldn't stand it anymore and quit the queue, and either chose to take a black car up the mountain or gave up. Of course, there were also some who insisted. We also quit the queue at that time, mainly because we thought that even if we queued up, we wouldn't be able to play for long before it got dark, and then we would have to queue for another three hours to come down, which was not worth it.
Then where to go next became our first consideration. At first, we considered sharing a black car with others, but we gave up because it was unsafe. Later, we thought about finding a hourly hotel to rest for a while and wait for the main group to come down, but it was meaningless. Finally, I had an idea. Since we had to queue up to take the car, we might as well walk up the mountain to play. There would be no queues when we walked, and we would be able to climb wherever we could. I asked the tour guide and he said that in our case, we could climb down after we reached the Martyrs' Shrine. Okay, let's set a small goal first: the Martyrs' Shrine.
The hiking route of Nanyue Hengshan is not difficult. We climbed up slowly along the Fanyin Ancient Trail. There were really few people along the way, with only a few tourists climbing. It took us three hours to finally reach the halfway point of the mountain. It felt really good for two people to have contracted half of the mountain during the Spring Festival. However, in the end we still couldn’t find the Martyrs’ Shrine that the tour guide mentioned, so we prepared to go down the mountain when we climbed to the farmhouse halfway up the mountain.
The sky gradually darkened, and we hurried and finally returned to the place where we came in before dark. This was also the first time in my life that I experienced the feeling of climbing a mountain at night. It was really intoxicating to climb from dawn to sunset and then to complete darkness. From then on, I realized that if you want to join a group during the Spring Festival, you must not choose a place that is too popular, especially if it involves climbing a mountain and going back and forth in one day, you must be cautious.
Finally when we got back to the bus we realized that although many people chose to quit halfway this time, there was only one young couple who actually did not climb the mountain. Everyone else climbed a certain distance up the mountain (some even quit halfway and then continued to queue again when they saw there were not many people in the queue). However, those who reached the top of the mountain also said that it was very cold on the mountain, the road was very slippery, and some places were frozen. After climbing down, they had to wait in line in the cold wind for three hours to get the bus down. At this time, we began to be glad that we did not insist on queuing up, otherwise it would be very easy to catch a cold.
Here's some information for those who climbed the mountain on snowy days. We climbed the mountain on December 31st. The heavy snow caused the bus to stop running. I took my family and children to climb for 2.5 hours to the half-mountain pavilion. I queued for 2 hours for the cable car and arrived at Nantianmen in 6 minutes. Then I climbed to Zhurong Peak in 1 hour. After coming down, I queued for another 2 hours for the cable car. It was almost 6 pm when I returned to the half-mountain pavilion. I went down the mountain in the dark, but there were so many people that I didn't have to worry about the dark. The road was very slippery, and crampons played a big role. I arrived at the bottom of the mountain at a little after 7 pm. There were many illegal taxis, and it cost 25 per person to Hengshan West Station. Although it was difficult to climb the mountain on snowy days, it was worth the trip to see this beautiful ice and snow.
In addition, children under 1.3 meters are free of tickets and cable cars. In fact, if you are less than 1.4 meters, you don’t need to buy a ticket. Basically, you have been given a pass. If you really can’t, you can buy a ticket on the spot. 😊
Note: There are incense shops everywhere in Hengshan, and the prices of incense and candles range from tens to hundreds of yuan. If it is your first time to worship Buddha in Nanyue Hengshan and you don’t know how to do it, it doesn’t matter. When you buy incense, the bosses will teach you some basic precautions for worshiping Buddha.
Pilgrimage to Mount Hengshan: There are many incense shops in Hengshan where you can buy incense locally. If you bring your own, you must bring environmentally friendly incense before entering the mountain.
Accommodation in Nanyue Hengshan: Due to the limited accommodation capacity at the top of Nanyue Hengshan, it is often difficult to book a room, especially during the peak tourist season (on the mountain: 120-300 yuan/room). In fact, it is quite convenient to stay in a hotel with better conditions at the foot of the mountain (1000-160 yuan/room) and go up the mountain to watch the sunrise at night.
Mountain climbing: There are many unnamed walking trails. Just walk along them and climb up.
Hengshan is well developed and very safe. You can go there according to your own physical strength.
However, I still recommend that you buy a round trip ticket. Walking will really kill you. The smarter way for us was to buy a round trip ticket, take the cable car down to the Banshan Pavilion, and then walk down from the Banshan Pavilion to the entrance of the scenic area. This is more comfortable.
Tickets are only accepted in cash, so you must bring your own cash. Many tourists cannot buy tickets at the door, and there are no ATM machines nearby.
I think the ticket price is not expensive, but the round-trip transportation is more expensive than the ticket, which is a bit annoying.
There are many straw shoes, crampons, and anti-slip chains for sale at the foot of the mountain, but you can bring your own equipment.
As the minibus went up, we saw small pieces of ice on the flowers and trees along the way. In Hengshan Scenic Area, you basically take a minibus to the Banshan Pavilion, then take a cable car from the Banshan Pavilion to Nantianmen, and then you have to walk from Nantianmen to Zhurong Peak.
The crystal clear icicles and ethereal clouds bring everyone into a picturesque fantasy.
Overnight, it was as if I entered a pure and beautiful dream world.
The branches of every tree are covered with crystal clear ice flowers, one by one, in clusters, so graceful and elegant.
The pine trees are evergreen all year round and remain lush even in winter. The condensed rime is all in one direction.
The two leafless trees among the pine trees were covered with rime.
Surrounded by deep green, it stands out
The crystal icicles hanging on the trees all over the mountain and the ethereal clouds create a picturesque fantasy. Being immersed in the ice and snow, one cannot help but admire the magic of nature.
Looking around, the big trees are covered with frost and snow, turning into jade trees and branches overnight, presenting a beautiful scene of thousands of pear trees in bloom.
The ravines and peaks are covered in silver, and the jade trees and branches are crystal clear, like silver, so beautiful that it is beyond description.
Nanyue Hengshan is worthy of its reputation. A mountain is not famous for its height, but for the immortals who live there. Hengshan is a famous longevity mountain, and there are many believers, many of whom say it is effective. The scenery is OK, and it is convenient for travel.
The scenery of Nanyue Hengshan is great, the transportation is convenient, the ticket price and bus cable car price are not expensive. The main peak, Zhurong Peak, is 1,300 meters above sea level, and the ticket office at the foot of the mountain is only 100 meters above sea level. It takes more than ten kilometers of hiking to reach the top of the mountain, and the vertical climb is 1,200 meters in altitude. The intensity is still relatively high, but the hiking trail is relatively easy to walk. The carriageway and the step road run parallel to each other through the mountains and forests. There are some temples and other attractions along the way where you can see the scenery. They no longer sell tickets separately. The entire hike from the ticket office to the top of the mountain takes four to five hours at a normal speed, and it takes three hours at a faster speed. You can take a car or cable car to reach Nantianmen, which is 1,100 meters above sea level, which is closer to the top of the mountain. It takes more than half an hour of hiking to reach the top. There are some small shops selling food on this road, such as tofu brain, braised eggs, milk tea, sausages, instant noodles, etc. The prices are not expensive. Overall, Nanyue Hengshan is very good and deserves to be one of the Five Sacred Mountains. I recommend you to go!
Because we traveled during the National Day holiday, we really underestimated the number of people. It took 5 hours to get the cable car up and down the mountain. It was so hot that it was really hard for everyone. We took the eco-friendly car to reach Nantianmen. There was still a short distance left that we had to climb by ourselves. Fortunately, it took less than 1 hour to complete. The area on the top of the mountain is not big, and the scenery is not as good as imagined. It can be regarded as a challenge to complete the third of the Five Mountains. I may never come again. 😂
Although it is a place I want to visit, I can only give it three stars. It is really average. Compared with the situation of Mount Tai, the uniqueness of Mount Song, and the steepness of Mount Hua, it is too weak. Mount Heng, the northernmost mountain, has a hanging temple, while Mount Heng, the southernmost mountain, is really bland.
As the most beautiful of the Five Sacred Mountains, the scenery of Nanyue Hengshan is indeed picturesque. It is a bit tiring to hike to Zhurong Peak. There is a hotel on the top of the mountain, and you can also stay at Shangfeng Temple, which will be cheaper.
Mount Hengshan, Nanyue, is the closest of the famous mountains in China, but I never visited it until this year.
When it comes to majestic beauty, Hengshan Mountain is indeed not as beautiful as Huangshan Mountain and Huashan Mountain. It is a bit similar to Mount Tai, and mainly attracts believers with its cultural landscape. Along the way, you can see temples and halls with prosperous incense. Of course, Hengshan Mountain is also very famous for its sunrise, sea of clouds, and especially the rime in winter. But then again, as an atheist, what is the point of climbing Hengshan Mountain on a hot day with no clouds in the sky?
From the perspective of the grand scene, there is really no place in Hengshan where you can see a more spectacular scene. This is far from the Kongtong Mountain and Wudang Mountain, which also have Taoist origins. The main reason is that the buildings on Hengshan are not large in scale and are scattered among the mountains and forests. There is no photogenic scenery between Zhurong Peak and Nantianmen, which have a relatively wide view.
However, the entire Hengshan scenic area is quite large, and you may not be able to walk more than one-third of it in a day, and you haven't been to the famous Magu Fairyland. Among the scenic spots I have visited, in terms of natural scenery, I feel that Huixian Bridge is the most worth seeing, but this is a scenic spot that requires a detour, and there are about 1,000 steps back and forth (for details, please refer to my comments on Huixian Bridge). In addition, the scenery of Huayan Lake is also good, especially the section of the Fanyin Ancient Road and the vines and vines at the foot of the mountain from Huayan Lake, which is quite artistic.
In addition to Huixian Bridge, I walked another sparsely traveled path, from Zhurong Peak to Guangji Temple. It was almost the worst mountain road I have ever walked in any major scenic area. The first half of the road was particularly difficult to walk on. The stone road was more than 30 centimeters wide and overgrown with weeds. Most of the time, I had to bend over and walk through the branches and leaves that grew wildly on both sides. The key point is that the scenery along the way was also very ordinary, and passing the so-called Yuwang Monument was also very disappointing (see my comments on Yuwang City for details).
Another thing that impressed me deeply in Hengshan was the sightseeing bus and toilets. You can buy a one-way ticket for the sightseeing bus, which not only takes you from the main gate to Nantianmen, but also from Guangji Temple to Nantianmen, from Sutra Hall to Nantianmen, from Bailongtan to Nantai Temple and then to Banshan Pavilion. I was lucky enough to take the bus back to Nantianmen from Guangji Temple, otherwise it would have taken me two more hours to walk.
The toilets in Hengshan are the most worthy of the name among the five-star scenic spots I have ever seen. They are bright, clean and comfortable, and have sofas and charging devices. In addition, the sedan chairs in Hengshan are clearly marked with prices, which is also worth a thumbs up.
Hengshan is also a summer resort. There are many inns in the back of the mountain where you can stay. Of course, many tourists will choose to stay in temples, and the price is not very high. Staying for a few days and slowly walking around the entire scenic area is also a good experience.
Hengshan Scenic Area, located in Nanyue District, Hengyang City, is a holy place of the Quanzhen Sect of Taoism, with an altitude of 1,300.2 meters. Due to its better climatic conditions than the other four mountains, there are lush forests and bamboos everywhere, which are green all year round; exotic flowers and plants are fragrant all year round, and the natural scenery is very beautiful, so it is known as the unique beauty of Nanyue.
We set off for the mountain at daybreak. The road up the mountain was winding, and I almost vomited when I was sitting on the minibus. Coincidentally, the bus was full of Cantonese people, who kept speaking Cantonese. My mother and I were so dizzy that we didn't have time to talk to each other. My mother is very afraid of motion sickness, because once she gets motion sick, she will have a hard time the whole day. But when the door opened, the Cantonese people in the bus, including my mother, were so excited that they took their cameras and started taking pictures everywhere without fear of the cold. It was so beautiful! The rime on Hengshan Mountain is really amazing, and we are so lucky to catch it. In the early morning, the sky on the mountain was cloudy and foggy. Gradually, the fog dissipated, revealing the blue sky, which was set against the crystal white mountain. It was indescribably clean and beautiful. It was almost noon when we returned to the mountain. The ice and snow had begun to melt, so it was better to enjoy the rime early!
If the weather is good and you can see the sea of clouds, it is worth going. When we went there, the rime began to decrease as the temperature warmed up, but the fog was still very thick, which was a bit of a rip-off. It is very convenient to take a bus directly from the high-speed rail station, and you can find accommodation near the Banshan Pavilion (cable car station). It is very convenient to visit the scenic area, and there is nothing to worry about.
It is not possible to start from the Nanyue Archway. After entering the mountain gate, it takes about 4 hours to climb to Zhurong Peak. There are gurgling water and many waterfalls at the foot of the mountain. In the middle, there are jagged rocks and rocks. It takes about 2 hours to reach Zhongting. Ignoring the cable car, continue up the mountain. At this time, the temperature drops significantly and the fog begins to thicken. It takes 3 hours to reach the Zushi Hall. Most of the physical strength is consumed, so take a short rest. Then go through Nantianmen to Zhurong Peak. Although the mountain is not high, the journey is long. Don't miss the words "Wuyue Duxiu". At the place where you take the tour bus in Zhongting, walk down about 100 meters.
In 1982, Hengshan Scenic Area was included in the first batch of national key scenic spots; in February 2006, Hengshan was selected into the first batch of national natural and cultural dual heritage lists; in May 2007, Hengshan Scenic Area was rated as the first batch of national 5A tourist attractions; in August 2007, Hengshan was listed as a national nature reserve.
The beauty of Mount Hengshan in Nanyue is indeed unique among the other mountains.
Hengshan Mountain in Xiaoxiang is high, and the scenery of Nanyue Hengshan Mountain is quite good.
Unlike Mount Tai and Mount Hua, there are shuttle buses that can directly reach the Nantianmen on the left and right sides of the mountain top. There are temples and Taoist temples along the way, and many people burn incense.
Among the Five Great Mountains, the first one I climbed was Mount Tai in the East, the second was Mount Heng in the North, the third was Mount Hua in the West, the fourth was Mount Song in the Center, and the last one I chose to visit was Mount Nanyue, which disappointed me because I basically didn’t have to climb any steps, and I didn’t have that tiring feeling of climbing to the top of the mountain.
The most impressive places during this trip to Hengshan include Magu Fairyland, Shilang, Shangfeng Temple, Zhurong Temple, etc. They all have a sense of otherworldly realms, especially Magu Fairyland, which is particularly like a scene from The Legend of Sword and Fairy.
I only remember taking a minibus all the way to the top of Hengshan Mountain. Even if we didn't reach the top, it wasn't far to walk to Zhurong Peak after we got off the bus. Anyway, we reached the top of Hengshan Mountain.
Passing by, didn't go in in a hurry, took a walk outside the scenic area
Nanyue, one of the Five Great Mountains of China, we didn't stay there last time. Actually, accommodation on the mountain is not expensive. Next time, we will stay there. I made a mistake and didn't take a car when I came down. Later, I walked all the way down. You can read my travel notes for details.
In winter, the cedars on the top of Hengshan Mountain are covered with ice, which is a very shocking fairyland covered in silver, while the bottom of the mountain is still a lush forest. It just feels inappropriate for the scenic area to drive all the way to the top of the mountain, which greatly affects the hiking experience.
The Five Mountains closest to Guangzhou are also worth checking in
As one of the Three Mountains and Five Peaks, you must visit Hengshan when you come to Hengyang. Hengshan is not high in altitude but it is not easy to visit. This is the most popular mountain among the Three Mountains and Five Peaks. Many people bring a lot of incense when they go up the mountain.
The rime of Mount Nanyue is crystal clear, a sea of ice in various shapes and sizes.
The scenery is very ordinary, and I feel that it is the worst scenery among all the famous mountains I have visited. The mountaineering is very intense, and it is different from ordinary mountaineering because most of the roads are winding and there are not many steps. The scenic spots are scattered, very similar to Lushan. It is basically difficult to walk all the way, even if you are a strong donkey, in one day. Many travel guides on the Internet are misleading.
We climbed Hengshan Mountain at night and reached the top in more than 6 hours. It was very cold at night on the top of the mountain. We climbed the mountain next to the incense burner for one night and watched the sunrise at about 5:40 in the morning. We mainly walked along the road when we went up the mountain, and sometimes took shortcuts on the small roads. We got lost on the small roads when we went down the mountain, and it took a long time to get out of the mountain.
The sunrise and sunset scenery is five stars, but the scenic area planning can only be given three stars. It is too unfriendly to tourists who want to climb mountains. If you don't look carefully for many mountain roads, you can only walk along the road. There is no more complete walking route. However, seeing the sunrise and sunset is already very satisfying, and the tourist experience is secondary.
The scenery at the top of the mountain is nice, the staff are polite and always smile when asking for directions.
The scenery is still very nice, although most people go there to burn incense... The "Fanyin Ancient Road" with cicadas chirping all the way in late June is very charming.
Stop 127: Hengshan, Nanyue, Hengyang. AAAAA, ticket 122 + bus ticket 80 (half price with voucher), no inspection required. Check-in trip, no time to climb to the top. Half an hour into the hiking trail, sweating all over. Overall, it's far worse than Mount Emei in Sichuan.
I just came back, it's good to exercise. University, it's time to go out and see the outside world!
Nanyue Hengshan should be the least interesting of the Five Mountains, right? Maybe it is because it is deep in the south. There are many tall trees on the mountain, and it can't be distinguished from other fairy mountains. But as one of the Five Mountains, you still have to come here in person if you have time.
The visitor center provides free route maps, so it is best to take one with you as a backup. Walk 200 meters east from the visitor center to a less obvious walking trail. From Fanyin Valley to Zhongzhimutan, we left the trail and headed towards the Martyrs' Shrine, giving up Shangzhimutan.
Going up further, we deviated from the main road and took the path that locals take to go up the mountain, missing many attractions. It was a bit of a pity. There were basically no tourists. Those who want to hike can try it. It is the most primitive step. If you take a tourist bus, some of the scenery cannot be seen.
The walking path and the sightseeing lane will intersect, but you cannot get on the bus halfway without a ticket. If you choose a sightseeing bus at the tourist center, you can get off at each attraction. It is also convenient to take the next bus to go to other attractions after you have had enough fun.
It seems that every mountain has a South Gate to Heaven, and reaching the South Gate to Heaven means you have basically reached the top of the mountain.
We saw many stone carvings along the way. If you like calligraphy, you can watch them up close. We saw the wish tree halfway up the mountain. It is said that making a wish is very effective.
Because we were too tired from hiking the day before, we chose to take the shuttle bus down the mountain and walk for half an hour to Nantianmen to take the scenic area transportation bus, a one-way ticket. We went down the mountain directly without getting off the bus.
We hiked to the west line of Hengshan Mountain, starting from Banshan Pavilion, passing through Magu Fairyland, Lingzhi Spring, Chuan Court, Monk Huairang Cemetery, He Jian Villa, Mojingtai, Tianxia Court, Fuyan Temple and finally arrived at Nantai Zen Temple. Then we returned to Banshan Pavilion Shuxian Villa by the same route, which took more than 4 hours. The forest oxygen bar in the mountain was refreshing. It was very cool without the sun. Although we walked up and down the hill for more than 4 hours, we didn't feel tired at all. Everyone was in high spirits. Overall, I felt that Nanyue Hengshan was not as good as expected. The scenery was average, but it was well managed because it was a mature scenic spot.
I want to emphasize that if you are not very interested in the scenic spots in the scenic area, but just want to climb the mountain like me, then on the way to Hengshan, you will meet many incense shop owners who will introduce you to incense. You can say that you are just here to climb the mountain, and they will introduce you to the incense shop and send you to the middle of the mountain for only ¥120. However, I came here specifically to climb the mountain, so the boss said that it is ¥80 per person to bring in. They will also give you tickets, but the tickets are basically useless. They are either recycled by others or they are fake. However, I saw that no one checked tickets at the scenic spots in the scenic area. Then I remind you that there is still a lot of space for 80. Locals can enter for free. An uncle on the road said that it only cost 30 before, so everyone can bargain as much as they can.
It is recommended to spend one day in Hengshan. Walk up the mountain and take a car down the mountain. The way down the mountain is long and hurts your knees.
After arriving at the Nanyue Archway, you can take free bus No. 1, 2, 3, or 4 to Damiao North Gate Station and get off at the Visitor Center.
Luggage storage is available on the first floor of the visitor center for RMB 10 for an unlimited time. The second floor is the ticket hall, with tickets costing RMB 100 in the off-season and RMB 120 in the peak season. The tourist bus and cable car tickets are bundled together, with a one-way ticket costing RMB 44 and a round-trip ticket costing RMB 78. You can take the tourist bus up the mountain on the third floor.
Attention friends who want to walk up the mountain. If you don’t need to store your luggage and have already bought your tickets online, then congratulations, you don’t have to go to the visitor center. You just need to get off at the north gate of the temple, walk forward, pick up your ticket at the Kangjialong entrance, and walk up the mountain.
My route:
Visitor Center - Take a tourist bus to Banshan Pavilion - Walk to Mojingtai (West Route) - Take a tourist bus to Banshan Pavilion - Take a cable car to Nantianmen - Walk to Shangfeng Temple and Zhurong Peak (Sunset) - (Second Day) Zhurong Peak (Sunrise) - Walk down the mountain along the entire East Route
If you plan to watch the sunrise and sunset, you need to stay in the mountains. There are many farmhouses along the way that provide accommodation, but it is obviously not convenient to be so far away from the highest point, Zhurong Peak. I got Shangfeng Temple from other friends' travel notes. It costs 50 per night for a 6-person room, including two vegetarian meals, breakfast and dinner. Dinner starts at 17:20 and breakfast is at 6:00 at the latest. It is obviously a good choice, but the environment is really very ordinary. Of course, there is also a farmhouse near Shangfeng Temple called Chenxi Villa, the price is emm...
There are also tents available for rent.
In addition, as for food and water, you can bring some in your backpack. They are also sold on the mountain. The price of mineral water is about 4-5 yuan at Banshan Pavilion.
We originally planned to walk up the mountain, but the train was late to the visitor center at 14:00. It was said that it would take 5-6 hours to go up the mountain. We started to go down the mountain at 6:30 and arrived at the walking exit at 11:30, which took about 5 hours. From the scenery down the mountain, the scenery of Nanyue is really just average, especially below Nantianmen, which is basically a temple trail. The Fanyin Ancient Trail and the Martyrs' Shrine are relatively memorable.
But for me, it seems pretty good to walk down the mountain alone in the early morning while the sun is still so gentle, feeling the breeze. The feeling of not caring about the scenery along the way but only caring about the mood at the time makes people feel very happy.
Friends who don’t like climbing can choose to take the bus directly up and down.
Nanyue Hengshan Mountain Ticket: 80 yuan + 3 yuan. (80 yuan in off-season, 120 yuan in peak season.)
Classic hiking route (the best route, covering several core attractions): From the entrance of Kangjialong, next to the tourist service center, pass the entrance of Shenglifang) enter the central scenic area → Huayan Lake → Martyrs' Shrine → Chuanyan Poetry Forest → Banshan Pavilion → Xuandu Temple → Zizhulin → Tiefu Temple → Xiangnan Temple → Zushi Hall → Nantianmen → Shizi Rock → Gaotai Temple → Shangfeng Temple → Zhurong Hall, and reach the highest peak, Zhurong Peak, 1,300.2 meters.
We started hiking at 10am and reached the highest peak, Zhurong Peak, at 16:00. The road signs were not very clear along the way, so we walked on roads, dirt roads, wild roads, and stepped trails. There were too many branching roads. (If you are hiking at night, pay special attention to the route. I originally planned to hike at night, but gave up because I didn't have a companion.)
Since it was the off-season and not the weekend, there were very few people, and it was indeed not as famous as Mount Huangshan and Mount Lushan. I felt that I was often walking alone along the way, and occasionally I would meet a few tourists going up the mountain. At first I thought I had taken the wrong path.
The main hiking routes include the Fanyin Ancient Trail, tourist trails and roads, which are intertwined and have many branches.
I actually walked onto the dirt and almost thought I had taken the wrong path, but occasionally I could see signs saying it led to the top of the mountain.
Hengshan is a mature scenic spot. You can travel by yourself. If you are not afraid of loneliness, you can go by yourself. Just be prepared. If you are like me and the weather is bad and you rarely go outdoors, I suggest you join a tour group. You can have someone to help you take pictures, share food with you, and play snowball fights with you. Otherwise, you can’t play snowball fights by yourself, and you can only take selfies with your hands raised high...
Tips for going to Hengshan in weather like mine:
1. Warm jackets, you must keep warm. Because it is really cold. Don't judge the weather there by the weather in Guangzhou. There is no comparison. It is super cold. Believe me~
2. Trekking poles, gloves, hats, disposable raincoats, non-slip sports shoes, preferably hiking shoes, which have good grip and are comfortable. Crampons (you can buy them there, they are sold at the foot of the mountain, 10 yuan a pair) Crampons are essential, otherwise you don’t need to climb, the road is icy, without crampons, you can’t walk, no shoes are useful, you must have crampons.
3. Be sure to bring some dry food, but don't bring too much. After all, you have to climb a mountain, and it will be very tiring if you carry too much. It was snowing and the bus would not go up the mountain, so I had to hike up by myself.
4. Wear a hat, scarf or something warm. Believe me, you won't regret it. It's best to bring a hand warmer. Don't count on the air conditioner to heat the room at night. It's useless if you turn it on because it's too cold.
5. Try to buy gloves that can be used to play with mobile phones. Believe me, if you buy the kind that requires you to take off the gloves to touch the screen and take pictures, you will be very cold. You originally wanted to take more pictures and take better pictures, but it was too cold. You didn't even want to take out your phone. You would feel cold after taking off the gloves for three seconds.
“Hengshan Mountain is like walking, Daishan Mountain is like sitting, Huashan Mountain is like standing, Songshan Mountain is like lying, only Nanyue Mountain is like flying.” It is one of the Five Sacred Mountains, a famous mountain in both Buddhism and Taoism, with beautiful scenery. Whether it is really as fast as flying as the ancients said, you have to experience it yourself.
From the north back door of Nanyue Temple, walk about 80 meters to the left to reach the Nanyue Hengshan Visitor Center where you can buy tickets and bus tickets. The day was good, there were many people waiting in line outside, and the temperature at the foot of the mountain was very hot. It was quick to buy tickets by taking the elevator to the second floor of the visitor center, but the waiting time outside was a bit longer. After buying the bus ticket and ticket insurance, walk to the third floor to pass the manual ticket inspection and take the tourist bus to start climbing. Get off the bus halfway up the mountain and transfer to the cable car. The tour bus driver reminded that if you don't get off the bus halfway up the mountain, you will enjoy more attractions. Few people get off the bus halfway up the mountain. Perhaps the hot weather is also a reason. We still insist on transferring to the cable car halfway up the mountain. Friends who come here for the first time recommend climbing the mountain once, especially in good weather, don't miss it. The rolling hills, mountains and mountains, good visibility, sigh that the scenery on the mountain is beautiful.
It was my first time to worship the gods. I drove there from Lianjiang with great enthusiasm. I saw frost on the trees when I climbed the mountain in the morning. The scenery was really beautiful. Although the fog was a bit thick, it was this hazy feeling that made me feel like I was in a fairyland...

Nanyue Hengshan - a wish trip! It's rare for more than a dozen classmates to visit together. There were laughter and joy along the way. We had a lot of fun climbing the mountain and taking pictures! The scenery is still good and worth visiting!
There were a lot of people. We waited for two hours for the bus to go up the mountain. Then the cable car was also very crowded. There were super long queues going up and down the mountain. The scenery was still good. It was quite hot when we went up the mountain, and we took off all kinds of clothes. But when we walked to Nantianmen later, the weather had changed. It suddenly became much colder, especially the road to Zhurong Peak. It was already past 5 pm when we climbed to Zhurong Peak. It was much colder. There was still heavy fog when we went down the mountain. The scenery was like an ink painting. It was a pity that we didn't see the icicles.
Nanyue Hengshan, also known as "Shouyue", is a granite mountain with beautiful scenery. It is the only mountain among the Five Sacred Mountains located south of the Yangtze River. Hengshan has a total of 72 peaks, among which Zhurong Peak is the highest, with an altitude of 1,300.2 meters. The height of Zhurong Peak, the depth of Fanguang Temple, the beauty of the Sutra Hall, and the strangeness of the Water Curtain Cave are known as the "Four Wonders of Nanyue". Hengshan is a natural botanical garden and zoo with rich species of animals and plants, many of which are rare species. There are temple complexes here - Nanyue Temple, Huangting Temple where female Taoist Wei Huacun became an immortal, and Zhusheng Temple, a Buddhist temple. Hengshan has always been a place where scholars gathered to give lectures. More than 10 academies such as Yehou Academy, Wending Academy, and Jixian Academy have appeared here.
It is recommended that you take an eco-friendly bus to the South Gate of Heaven and then walk to Zhurong Peak. This will be easier because there is no means of transportation from the South Gate of Heaven to Zhurong Peak, and it takes about two hours to climb. If you want to go down the mountain, you can take an eco-friendly bus or cable car. The eco-friendly bus goes directly to the foot of the mountain, and the cable car needs to go to the half-mountain pavilion to transfer to an eco-friendly bus to go down the mountain. The temperature drops significantly in the evening, and it will feel a bit cold. It is best to bring a thin jacket to keep warm.
Nanyue is the longevity mountain among the Five Sacred Mountains in China, and the saying "Live as long as Nanyue" comes from this. This time I came to Hengshan mainly to pray for my grandma's longevity, and secondly to satisfy my hobby of collecting famous rivers and mountains. Of the Three Mountains and Five Sacred Mountains, only the Northern Mountain Hengshan is left, and I will conquer it next year.
For southerners, Mount Hengshan is probably the easiest place to see rime in winter, but it is not unusual for northerners. My favorite place in Hengshan is the Martyrs' Shrine, which is dignified and solemn without tourists. It is located at the foot of Zhurong Peak. Coming here not only makes me feel deeply moved, but also makes me respect the anti-Japanese heroes. Of course, Chiang Kai-shek also commanded the Battle of Changsha in Hengshan. You can see the small Western-style building where he stayed, as well as the secret passage and air-raid shelter in Hengshan. The whole way is full of crisp pine forests, which is very beautiful.
The scenery is beautiful and the air is good. The Nanyue Temple is very popular. The Bodhisattva is effective.
Nanyue Hengshan Mountain, with beautiful scenery and clear skies, is known for its longevity and beauty.
The last stop of the Five Mountains Tour. On the way, I heard from the locals that the sea of clouds in Hengshan is very beautiful. Although I didn’t get the beauty of the sunrise, it was enough to see the spectacular sea of clouds.
To buy incense, you need to look at the price on the incense. Some are 5 yuan, some are 8 yuan. Some are 12 yuan. A set of 28 yuan is usually paired with 5 yuan incense. Nanyue Xiaoxie Incense Shop is paired with 12 yuan incense. It also provides free temple accompaniment. Hengshan West provides pick-up and delivery. The store is very close to the temple, very convenient, and you don’t have to walk anywhere.
It doesn't live up to the name of the Five Great Mountains. The scenery is really ordinary. It is probably famous for worshipping Buddha.
You can watch the sunrise in Nanyue on a sunny day, and you can watch the fog on a rainy day. No matter what, the scenery is beautiful. For sunrise, you usually choose the Sun Viewing Platform and the top of Zhurong Peak. For fog, you must choose Huixian Bridge! Huixian Bridge is on a small path away from Zhurong Peak. It is deep in the mountains and is very quiet. Occasionally, you will see monks sitting in meditation or walking by in cloth shoes. When watching the fog, you will feel like you are flying to heaven. If you have enough time, you may as well go to Huixian Bridge to see the beautiful scenery of Mount Xiu after watching the sunrise or making a pilgrimage to the top of the peak!
The famous Hengshan Mountain is constantly visited by tourists
I went there during the Chinese New Year and encountered rime. I was shivering with cold. I stayed at the temple on the top of the mountain for one night. It cost 50 yuan and included dinner and breakfast. The accommodation conditions were a bit poor. I had to make do with it for one night. After all, I could set out early the next morning to watch the sunrise. Unfortunately, it rained that day and it cleared up at around 8 o'clock. It was great to see the sea of clouds at Zhurong Peak~
Hengshan Mountain is a famous Taoist and Buddhist holy place in China. There are more than 200 temples, monasteries, nunneries and pavilions around the mountain. The main peaks of Hengshan Mountain include Huiyan Peak, Zhurong Peak, Zigai Peak, Yuelu Mountain, etc. The highest peak, Zhurong Peak, is 1,300.2 meters above sea level.
The scenery of Nanyue is also good, with beautiful sunsets and sunrises, and many temples and Taoist temples, which are worth a visit.
Due to the tight schedule, I was not able to have a good view of the entire Nanyue Mountain this time, which was a pity. Even so, I could still feel that the beauty of Nanyue Hengshan Mountain was well-deserved. Moreover, the biggest feature of Nanyue Mountain is not its beauty, but its longevity. Basically, everything about it is related to longevity, so it is also called Shouyue, the world's first longevity mountain. Shoushan, Shougu, Shouding, and Yanshou Village, it must have been destined for me to come here.
It was raining when I went there, so I didn't see anything. It takes a long time to climb the mountain. The transportation is convenient, there are free buses. But the distance is not far. I stayed in the temple on the mountain for one night, the environment is OK. But it is definitely humid. It's a bit regrettable, I will go again in the future
The motivation for writing this is to thank Fanyin Inn. The last two pictures are the inn's contact information. Fanyin Inn is not only clean, the owner is enthusiastic to pick you up, the food is cheap, breakfast is 6 yuan per person, dinner for two people is less than 30 yuan on average, one meat and one vegetable can't be finished, eggs and cucumbers are cheaper than in the mountains, and there is free laundry. The best thing is that Hengshan has a lot of rain, so they used traditional equipment to dry our shoes. Two people for one night, two meals, and four eggs and four cucumbers cost a total of 210 yuan.
The Hengshan Mountain is made of granite except for the mud. All the houses and roads are made of granite. There are many stone carvings on the cliffs. There are many Buddhist and Taoist temples, and many people worship, but I didn't see any monks or nuns. There are many couplets, and burning incense and worshiping Buddha has become an industry. The public toilets are very clean. The scenery is gentle, quiet and beautiful, and there is not much air.
Nanyue, one of the Five Great Mountains of China, is the fifth mountain I climbed, fulfilling a long-cherished wish.
The mountain is cool, the scenery is beautiful, and there are many stone carvings.
There were so many people that we hadn't entered the visitor center for more than an hour since 8 o'clock in the morning. What kind of management is this? It's so bad.
As one of the "Five Great Mountains" in China, when we went there in the morning, we found it was a tragedy. It was foggy and after reaching the top, we found that we couldn't see anything.
It is worth a visit. I went there at 12 o'clock in the morning. One of us in the dormitory climbed up step by step at night. It took nearly five hours and we walked very fast. The scenery is super beautiful. I saw the sunrise at the Wangri Terrace. It was super beautiful.
I feel that the purpose of going to Nanyue is just to climb mountains and worship Buddha, and the scenery is nothing special.
You must go in winter! ! ! ! ! ! I used to wonder, what is so good about mountains? And after returning from Huangshan, I didn't plan to see the Five Sacred Mountains. This time, my family drove there by themselves, so we just went. As a result, we just happened to catch the rime! ! Do you know how difficult it is for southerners to see snow? All we could see was rime! ! ! !

The highest peak of Nanyue Hengshan Mountain, with an altitude of 1300.2 meters
Here you can find Zhurong Hall, Moon Watching Altar, and the ancient stone carvings of "Nanshan"
Looking out over the Xiangjiang River and the rolling sea of clouds, the scenery of Mount Hengshan is breathtakingly beautiful.
Many people came to Hengshan
Unable to climb Zhurong Peak
Life is hard to start with.
Standing on Hengshan Mountain, you will find that there is smoke all around.
As if I were a fairy
Living in this paradise without fireworks
It's really beautiful here
The first time I got close to the sky, I found it so cute
Climbing up Mount Hengshan, the small hills of the past are nothing
Sunny weather
Taking photos with the background as the background also saves the filter effects
After I came back, I regretted not bringing a photographer to take more pictures.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha
As one of the Five Sacred Mountains, Hengshan Mountain is a little awkward. The scenery is a little bland, but it seems a bit unreasonable not to come here when you come to Hunan.
The ticket to Nanyue is 80 in the off-season and 100 in the peak season, plus 3 yuan for insurance (mandatory purchase). Hengshan is different from the other mountains in the Five Sacred Mountains. It has a road leading directly to the top of the mountain, so there are two ways to go up the mountain. One is to walk along the road. This road is long but easy, and the other is the hiking trail. This road is short but it is a mountain road, and it is tiring to climb. The two roads overlap in some sections, so we chose the hiking trail. I will not describe the climbing process in detail here as it is not interesting.
2017.2.10 The most important mountain climbing goal of Liangzi and I during our winter vacation trip is Mount Hengshan, Nanyue; this is also Liangzi’s goal of climbing the Three Mountains and Five Peaks. We climb up one mountain after another step by step relying on our own little feet; the Five Peaks are unique and the scenery is very magnificent. The climbing process is tiring, but the feeling of reaching the top of the mountain is comfortable. We feel the charm of climbing and experience the joy of climbing!
Hengshan Mountain, the Southern Mountain among the Five Great Mountains, is a mountain where people pray for good health, longevity and health. There is a saying that “May you be blessed as much as the East Sea and live as long as the Southern Mountains”, and the Southern Mountains here refer to Hengshan Mountain.
The highest peak is Zhurong Peak, named after the "God of Fire" Zhurong. There is a Zhurong Temple on the top of the peak, which is very popular.
