Yuelu Mountain - Gulushan Temple

Gulushan Temple, also known as Huiguang Temple and Wanshou Zen Temple, has a history of more than 1,700 years. It is the earliest relic of Buddhism introduced into Hunan and one of the early Buddhist temples in my country.
The environment of the temple is very quiet. There are two Podocarpus trees in front of the temple, which are relics from the Six Dynasties period. The temple houses precious Buddhist scriptures and ancient books.
Today, there is an endless stream of people coming to worship Buddha in Gulushan Temple. The temple is hidden among the layers of green forests, and the morning bells and evening drums are accompanied by the sound of Buddhist chants.

Lushan Temple, also known as Huiguang Temple and Wanshou Zen Temple, is located on the hillside of Yuelu Mountain on the west bank of the Xiangjiang River in Changsha City. It was founded by Li Fa Chong, a disciple of the Dunhuang Bodhisattva Li Fa Hu, in the fourth year of Taishi in the Western Jin Dynasty (268 AD). It has a history of more than 1,700 years and is the earliest relic of Buddhism entering Hunan. The temple is adjacent to Qingfeng Gorge on the left and Baihe Spring on the right. It overlooks the red maples and Changdao Xiangliu in front and the wind and clouds of Yubei and the deep ravines and forests in the back. It is known as "the first scenic spot in the Han and Wei Dynasties and the first dojo in Hunan", and is now a national key Buddhist temple.

There is an ancient temple on the hillside of Yuelu Mountain. It has a history of 1,700 years and is the earliest temple in Hunan where Buddhism was introduced. The temple is solemn and dignified, and you can have vegetarian meals during mealtime. In addition, the temple has a light commercial atmosphere, and walking in it can make you calm down.

Gulushan Temple was first built in the fourth year of the Taishi reign of the Western Jin Dynasty. The mountain gate is very unique and has an exotic feel. Covered with snow, it is as beautiful as a painting.

There was no one in the temple, except for the occasional monk walking quietly through the hall, which made it seem even more deserted. It really felt like a Buddhist quiet place, with tranquility everywhere.

The temple is not big, but I stayed there for 2 hours. It's because the scenery is so beautiful!

Lushan Temple is located in the ancient trees of Yuelu Mountain. It is one of the oldest temples in Hunan Province. It was built in the fourth year of Taishi in the Western Jin Dynasty (268 AD). The temple was originally named Huiguangming Temple and was renamed Lushan Temple in the early Tang Dynasty. The temple is adjacent to Qingfeng Gorge on the left and Baihe Spring on the right. It overlooks the red maple trees and Changdao Xiangliu in front and is backed by the wind and clouds of Yubei and the deep forest. It is known as "the first scenic spot in the Han and Wei Dynasties and the first Taoist temple in Hunan". It is now a national key Buddhist temple. The temple was founded more than 1,700 years ago and was destroyed by war six times. It was destroyed by the Japanese army in 1944. Only the mountain gate and the Sutra Pavilion remain. The hall has been restored and the Thousand-handed Guanyin in the hall is solemn and kind. The temple consists of the main buildings such as the mountain gate, Maitreya Hall, Daxiong Hall, Guanyin Pavilion, and Zhaitang. The mountain gate is in the style of a memorial archway with the words "Ancient Lushan Temple" inscribed on the plaque. The Sutra Repository is also known as the Guanyin Pavilion. In front of the pavilion there are two ancient Podocarpus trees, which are said to have been planted in the Six Dynasties and are also known as Six Dynasties Pines, becoming a living witness to the long history of Lushan Temple.

Lushan Temple: Lushan Temple is an ancient temple built in the early Jin Dynasty. It is the earliest large temple in Hunan. The great Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu once praised the grandeur of the temple with the poem "The temple gate opens high into the Dongting Plain, and the temple foot extends into the Chisha Lake". There is a banner with the words "Ancient Lushan Temple" on the mountain gate, and on both sides are couplets with the words "The earliest scenic spot in the Han and Wei Dynasties, the first Taoist temple in Hunan". There are two Podocarpus trees in front of the Guanyin Pavilion, with twisted branches and lush needles. The one on the left is said to have been planted in the Six Dynasties, called "Six Dynasties Pine", with an age of more than 1,700 years. The two ancient pines stand side by side in front of the pavilion. Passing under the trees is like a pass, so it is called "Songguan".

I have always been critical of temples (they are so-called quiet places but they are all commercialized), but when I saw the introduction of why this temple does not charge admission, I suddenly felt a good impression of it.

By Liyi |

After entering the gate of Lushan Temple, you can see many small turtles in the release pond. There are not many people in Lushan Temple, and I also saw the legendary abbot.

By Fujima MY Y |

The temple is nice, free to enter, and it feels very artistic inside. It is worth a visit

By Practice |

As soon as you enter the temple, you can see the release ponds on both sides. Fish are swimming freely, and there are turtles standing beside them. There are several small bamboo forests in the temple, which are tall and straight.

By Qing Huan-Awakening |

In addition to the two "must-visit spots" at the foot of the mountain, the Academy and the Aiwan Pavilion, Gulushan Temple is a quiet place that I discovered by chance. Without the crowds of tourists, it is a place where you can relax and feel the "good old days".

A very exquisite temple, located on Yuelu Mountain. What impressed me most was the ancient arhat pine in front of Guanyin Pavilion, which was very good. Friends who go to Yuelu Mountain recommend going there to see it.

When I was halfway up the mountain, I passed by and asked my friend about the elephants guarding the gate on both sides. Maybe the ancient temple came directly from India 1,000 years ago?

By Good mood every day |

Gulushan Temple is located halfway up Yuelu Mountain. You can reach it by walking up a mountain road from the south gate of Yuelu Mountain. The gate of Gulushan Temple is very distinctive, with two stone elephants at the gate. This is a thousand-year-old temple built in the Western Jin Dynasty and the earliest Buddhist temple in Hunan Province. Over the past thousand years, it has been destroyed by wars and rebuilt many times. During the Japanese invasion of China, this ancient temple was bombed, and only the gate and the Sutra Pavilion remained. The gate of the ancient temple shines brightly under the setting sun, which makes people feel respect.

The ancient Lushan Temple is still the location of the Hunan Buddhist College.

The ancient Yuelu Mountain Temple is surrounded by ancient trees and is very quiet. Although there are many tourists visiting Yuelu Mountain, when they come here, they all slow down their pace, lower their voices, put aside the worldly troubles for a while, and enjoy a moment of peace in their hearts. This is the natural feeling of coming to a famous mountain and ancient temple.

By Sycamore |

The incense is quite prosperous, which is not bad, but because it is a temple, it is not easy to take many photos. It is still good to pass by and take a look when climbing Yuelu Mountain.

By VIOLETing |

It is very big inside. The view of the temple from the mountain is quite different.

It is a good place to take photos. It has an antique feel and is very popular. You can go and pay your respects.

It takes half an hour to an hour to climb up the mountain to reach the Gulushan Temple. Things on the mountain are more expensive than those at the foot of the mountain. Ice cream is about eight yuan each, two eggs are five yuan, and so on. There are also blessed love locks, lucky bags, etc. Since you are on the mountain, you have to go and worship. The scenery inside the Gulushan Temple is average.

By Ting |

I asked for a fortune there, but I don't know if it works.

By janiyaha |

Gulushan Temple is free of entrance fee now, which is amazing. Although it is small, it has everything. With its profound cultural heritage and background, it is the ancestor of Buddhism. It is much better than those small and large temples that have sprung up now. It is a real temple, very effective, and it feels worth believing in! Many locals come here to burn incense and worship Buddha, very pious. Personally, I feel it is better than Kaifu Temple, both are ancient monuments.

By Quincy |

Gulushan Temple, as famous as Gukaifu Temple at the foot of the mountain, is not only the first Buddhist temple in Hunan Province, but also one of the earliest Buddhist temples in my country.

However, there are several modern signs hanging on the gate of such an ancient monument... "Changsha Yuelu District Buddhist Association".... It's blinding... The relevant departments have resources but don't know how to use them, and this thousand-year-old historical monument is wasted. I really can't complain.

The layout of the ancient Lushan Temple is very similar to that of the ancient Kaifu Temple. There are bell towers and drum towers on the left and right when you enter the door. It is hard to tell who copied whom. The styles are so similar. Could it be that the same construction team was hired when the ancient buildings were restored? However, the content inside is much worse than that of the ancient Kaifu Temple. In fact, just looking at the unsightly signs at the door, you can tell that the level here is not very high.

We didn't go into the Gulushan Temple because we were in a hurry.

I originally thought that a sacred place like a temple was not suitable for taking photos, but when I saw the "Hunan Buddhist College", I was like "Wow" in my heart, I felt it was so impressive!

The two elephants at the door are also particularly imposing.

If I have another chance, I will still go in and experience the Buddhist culture!

By _Go to the lake on the prairie_ |

In addition to the Aiwan Pavilion, you must also visit the ancient Lushan Temple when you go to Yuelu Mountain. It is also the Hunan Buddhist College and the place for Buddhist Association to study. There are many Buddha statues in it. As soon as I entered the temple, I had an indescribable feeling of longing, as if I had entered a holy place. I would worship devoutly in front of each Buddha statue, no matter whether it is effective or not, it is necessary to worship it. If you are sincere, it will be effective.

It was the first day of the new year when we went there, so there were a lot of pilgrims. The open space in front of the mountain gate was directly fenced off for burning incense. The flames jumped very high, and the smoke was so irritating that it stung my eyes and choked my throat.

Lushan Temple is an ancient temple located on the hillside of Yuelu Mountain. It has a long history. The main authentic relics that remain are the mountain gate and Guanyin Pavilion. Since Yuelu Mountain is at a very low altitude, it takes about half an hour to walk from the foot of the mountain to Lushan Temple (it takes longer to climb from the south gate of Yuelu Mountain to Lushan Temple from the north gate of Yuelu Mountain). Lushan Temple is generally quiet, and there are still podocarpus trees from the Six Dynasties period inside.

On the way down the mountain, you will pass by Gulushan Temple. There are really young monks and old monks in it! They ring the bell, chant sutras, and shave their heads! I don’t know why, but every time I go to the temple, I always feel particularly magical and at peace, and I can also feel a sense of transcendence.

Although I see monks using smartphones too…

By dbho93 |

The monks had gone off work early, and the mist-shrouded Yuelu Ancient Temple was particularly peaceful. The temple as a whole was much more majestic than the Huanan Temple in Guangdong, and the courtyard in the corner revealed a hint of thoughtfulness, being small and exquisite.

By Luck on the tip of the tail |

On the hillside of Yuelu Mountain, it is relatively simple and quiet. The incense is not so strong, but it adds a sense of ancient charm.

We passed by Gulushan Temple, which had a strong Buddhist atmosphere. We stayed there for a while, took some photos, looked at the things sold by the vendors in front of the temple, and went into the temple to have a look, and also worshipped Buddha. There is also a Buddhist college inside. There is a kind of Bodhi fruit, which is very unique. It looks like stone, but it is actually a fruit, which is harder than stone! It looks very beautiful after processing! There are not many people in the Buddhist college, and it is very quiet! But there is a great atmosphere. We walked around inside, worshipped Buddha, and rested for a while. We didn’t take any photos. After all, it is a Buddhist holy place, and to be honest, I don’t know what to take pictures of.

Du Mu's "Stop the car and sit to enjoy the maple forest in the evening, the frost leaves are redder than the flowers in February" describes the scenery here.

There is a temple on Yuelu Mountain. When I got there, I smelled a very fragrant meat smell, which I found very strange.

By Cat Bear |

Gulushan Temple is really big. I got lost a few times and could not get out. My nanny taught me to go into the house to call people and worship the gods in the temple, so I worshipped the gods whenever I saw them, praying for peace of mind and of course contributing a small amount of incense money.

By Li_Little Flower |

It should be halfway up Yuelu Mountain. It's hard to take photos inside the ancient temple. Hehe, I didn't actually go in. Climbing the mountain is too tiring. I couldn't walk.

By Xiaoqi |

This ancient Lushan Temple is still in use. It is the Hunan Buddhist College. When you go inside, you can occasionally see monks in yellow robes. It was raining heavily and there was no one around. We sat on the benches under the corridor to rest. It was very quiet around us. There was a hint of fragrance in the air. Suddenly, I felt that the world had sunk down and gathered in this place without the noise of the world. I sat there for a long time but didn't want to leave at all. I said I really wanted to stay here, but my life ended before it even began, so I had to keep going. I waited for a while and then got up and left.

Because I read the Changsha guide on China-TravelNote in advance, I have a special liking for the Lushan Temple on the cover. The simple but colorful temple gate is really beautiful. Until I walked to the entrance of the real Lushan Temple, the temple gate was a little smaller than I imagined, but I still felt it was beautiful, small and exquisite, especially the stone elephant at the entrance and the relief on the temple door. I stopped to look at it for a long time. Lushan Temple is not as perfectly repaired as some temples. Some eaves are still a little damaged, but this point reveals a more simple temperament, without too much commercial flavor. It should be good to come here to chant scriptures quietly and cultivate your mind.

Coming down from the Sutra Library, I looked up and saw my favorite Heart Sutra written on the wall. I stood there and read it again, feeling extremely happy. It is indescribable to encounter something you love in a quiet and beautiful scenery.

Lushan Temple is located halfway up Yuelu Mountain. It is an ancient temple in the early Jin Dynasty and the earliest large temple in Hunan where Buddhism was introduced. It was renamed Wanshou Temple during the reign of Emperor Shenzong of the Ming Dynasty and was renamed again in the early years of the Republic of China.
