Donglin Academy was founded in the first year of Zhenghe in the Northern Song Dynasty, i.e. 1111 AD. It was the place where Cheng Hao, a Neo-Confucianist of the Northern Song Dynasty, and Cheng Yi, a direct disciple of the famous scholar Yang Shi, gave lectures for a long time. It was later abandoned. In the 32nd year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty, i.e. 1604 AD, Donglin scholar Gu Xiancheng and others rebuilt and restored the academy and gave lectures here. They advocated the spirit of "reading, lecturing, and loving the country", which aroused widespread response from scholars across the country and became famous for a while. Donglin Academy became a gathering place of humanities in the Jiangnan region and a major center of public opinion for discussing state affairs.

The Donglin Party’s “old nest” academy, where “the sound of wind, rain, and reading are all pleasant to the ear; family affairs, national affairs, and world affairs are all of concern”, has been “destroyed” and closed for half a year…
*2018.11.15-2019.05.15*Closed for renovation, not open, advertise widely, don't miss out
The First Girls' Middle School next door was also closed...
Walking past the memorial archway of "Donglin Old Relics" and the small bridge over the Pan Pond where fish swim leisurely, you will reach the "Donglin Jingshe". This was originally the ceremonial gate of the academy, and is now considered a "schoolhouse". Wood paintings showing the history of the academy are hung on the walls of the room. Passing through the ceremonial gate is the courtyard of "Li Ze Hall". The name of the hall came from Gu Xiancheng, implying that one can make friends with literature and help others with their friendship. It is an important place for lectures in the academy. Tables and chairs are placed in the hall for visitors to sit. Behind Li Ze Hall is the main hall of the academy, "Yiyong Hall", which is the symbol of the academic territory of the Donglin School. Visitors may be unfamiliar with the name of the hall, but there is probably no scholar who does not know the couplet in the hall, which is "The sound of wind, rain, and reading is heard by the ears, and the affairs of family, country, and the world are all concerned". Behind Yiyong Hall is the "holy domain", that is, the Yanju Temple dedicated to Confucius. The portrait and statue of Confucius are in the center, with four attendants on both sides. What’s interesting is that the plaque does not say “Teacher of All Ages” but “Zhonghe”, which fits well with the previous “Yiyong”.
In addition to houses, the west road also has a small pond and a small pavilion, which is more leisurely than the middle road. There are several study rooms here, including Gu Yuncheng's Xiaobianzhai, Zhou Yanwen's Xinjianzhai, Wu Guisen's Laifuzhai, and Wancuishanfang, where the academy gave lectures. Beside the study room, there is a small bluestone bridge, pearl koi, and green trees reflecting the pond. I think it was a place for scholars to rest and have fun.
The southernmost part of the east road is the "Zhengxin Pavilion". This octagonal pavilion has nothing special about its appearance, but the plaque hanging inside is eye-catching. "Nine Jinshi in one list" and "Three Jieyuan in six subjects" fully demonstrate Wuxi's brilliant achievements in the imperial examination. Going north from the Zhengxin Pavilion is the "Daonan Temple". When the eunuch party destroyed Donglin Academy in the late Ming Dynasty, Daonan Temple was spared. It is said that the founder of the academy, Yang Shi, and his disciples are enshrined in the temple.
Donglin Academy. With my student ID and Zuo Pang's teacher ID, I enjoyed free admission. A corner of the downtown area, a quiet place. The reputation of the Donglin Party is indeed controversial, and its achievements in teaching and educating people will last for thousands of years.
Donglin Academy was founded in the first year of Zhenghe Period in Northern Song Dynasty. It was the place where Cheng Hao, a Neo-Confucianist of Northern Song Dynasty, and Cheng Yi, a direct disciple of Cheng Yi, and Yang Shi, a well-known scholar, gave lectures for a long time. It was later abandoned. In 1604, Donglin scholar Gu Xiancheng and others rebuilt and restored it and gave lectures here. They advocated the spirit of "reading, lecturing, and loving the country", which aroused widespread response from scholars across the country and became famous for a time. Donglin Academy became a gathering place of humanities in Jiangnan region and a major center of public opinion for discussing national affairs.
I travelled a long way to get there, but it's still under repair and won't be repaired until 2020. I'm so disappointed.
The garden is okay. It doesn't cover a large area, but it is quite famous, mainly thanks to that couplet.
Donglin Academy is a place that will definitely appear in Ming Dynasty history books and documentaries. I arrived at around 8 o'clock and there were not many people. After the tour groups finished, they started to come. I like the names of the various small attractions, such as Lize Hall, Yiyong Hall, Xinjianzhai, Yanju Temple, etc. Friends who like history are worth visiting.
In the Ming Dynasty, there was a group of people who were pedantic, sour, full of clichés and unrealistic ideas, and immersed in their own imaginary spiritual utopia. But it was these useless scholars who believed in justice and dared to sacrifice themselves for justice and fight against the traitors to death. They all came out of this academy.
The location is not remote, but the inside is not contaminated by the outside world at all and is very quiet.
Donglin Academy was first built in the first year of Zhenghe period in the Northern Song Dynasty (1111 AD). It was the place where Yang Shi, one of Cheng's four major disciples, taught. It was later abandoned until the 32nd year of Wanli period in the Ming Dynasty (1604 AD), when it was rebuilt by Donglin scholar Gu Xiancheng and others. They gathered here to give lectures and criticize the government, which made them famous for a time. It has experienced ups and downs in the torrent of history and was fully restored in 2002.
It is open to tourists free of charge. Even so, since it is not a famous tourist attraction, there are very few tour groups and tourists coming here, but this just gives it the quietness that a college should have.
Although it is the weekend and the attraction is free, there are very few visitors here. During the tour, I saw a few people choosing a secluded spot in the yard, reading quietly.
Very quiet and elegant, with a sense of Zen. Unfortunately, I went too late and some houses were closed, so I didn't find the famous sound of wind, rain and reading.
This is a free attraction. It is more like a small garden than a college. Don't underestimate this small space. It is easy to get lost in it. It is famous for Gu Xiancheng's "I care about everything, including family affairs, national affairs and world affairs". It is the holy place of the Donglin Party in the late Ming Dynasty.
Donglin Academy, as a famous academy in Wuxi, is the place where the famous couplet "The sound of wind, rain and reading is pleasant to the ears, and family affairs, national affairs and world affairs are all of concern" originated. It is a good influence on scholars. Nowadays, the academy is free to visit and is worth a visit!
It is so quiet that you can almost hear the ancients telling stories and discussing philosophy. It is free of charge and extremely beautiful.
It has been free since January 1, 2018. It takes half an hour to walk around slowly. The garden is neither big nor small. There are mountains, water and corridors. It is very suitable to take a rest in the yard and bask in the sun in the warm winter.
There are halls connected to each other in the academy. There is the Donglin Museum where you can learn about the origin, prosperity and decline. If you have learned about the history of the Ming Dynasty, it is recommended to go and have a look. It is a breath of fresh air in the bustling city.
Many literati and poets gather here, which gives people a sense of the inheritance of Chinese culture. And many people sit here to make a cup of tea and watch the clouds and wind.
If you are interested in the history of the Ming Dynasty, you must visit Donglin Academy. The academy was destroyed during the Tianqi period due to party disputes, and then restored and rebuilt during the Chongzhen period. It can be said that all the buildings here are reconstructions, or that all the buildings here are historical sites, because the rise and fall here are all witnesses of the ups and downs of the late Ming Dynasty, so no matter whether they are new or old, they are very worth recalling. In addition, students are free of charge here. I think the elegant meaning of the academy "learning to make friends" can inspire us, "This day will never come again, the waves are pouring into the Fusang, the yellow group is dancing, and the hair has suddenly turned gray."
This is a well-known academy in the Jiangnan area and one of the top 10 academies in China. The academy has a strong traditional Chinese style and academic atmosphere. It is said that many people who went to Beijing for imperial examinations in ancient times came back here to worship and hope to be admitted. The buildings in the academy are also typical Jiangnan scenery. You can follow the official account to listen to the explanations. The ticket price is 5 yuan and it is recommended to spend 1-2 hours.
Donglin Academy was first built in the first year of Zhenghe in the Northern Song Dynasty (1111 AD). In the 32nd year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1604 AD), Gu Xiancheng and others rebuilt and restored it on the original site, and it became an important place for spreading Neo-Confucianism and lecturing in Jiangnan at that time. The famous couplet "The sound of wind, rain, and reading is heard, and family affairs, national affairs, and world affairs are all concerned" comes from here. In the fifth year of Tianqi in the Ming Dynasty (1625 AD), Donglin Lecturers and others were denounced as "Donglin Party" and persecuted, and the academy was demolished by strict order without leaving a tile. After Chongzhen ascended the throne, he punished the eunuch party and issued an edict to repair the academy. After that, it continued to be repaired in various dynasties of the Qing Dynasty. In 2002, the Wuxi Municipal Government carried out a comprehensive restoration of Donglin Academy. Today, this scenic spot cannot be said to be very good, and going there is just for a feeling.
2017.4
Not many people go to Donglin Academy, but the environment is very good and not many people go there during holidays.
The famous saying "The sound of wind, rain and reading is pleasant to the ears, and the affairs of family, country and the world are of concern to me" comes from here. The academy is not big, but the layout is very reasonable, with the style of exquisite gardens, a good place to calm down and read.
Get off at Donglin Square subway station, it's not far away, students can enter for free with a student ID, but non-students need to pay 10 yuan for tickets. The sound of wind, rain and reading is pleasant to the ears, and the family affairs, national affairs and world affairs are all concerned, all of which come from here.
There are few visitors and the area is not large, but it has a long history. It is a garden with history and stories. The scenery is also nice. I walked around it slowly and learned a lot of historical knowledge.
Before entering the garden, I first saw the relief group on Donglin Square. The ticket is 5 yuan. The official recommended tour order, but the garden is small, so it's okay to walk around casually. Gu Xiancheng's famous couplet "The sound of wind, rain, and reading, all sounds are pleasant to the ear; family affairs, national affairs, and world affairs, all are of concern" is hung here.
Donglin Academy was first built in the Northern Song Dynasty. It was originally a place for Cheng School Neo-Confucianism lectures, but was later abandoned. It was rebuilt during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. In addition to lectures, it also became a center for current affairs and public opinion. Its significance to Chinese history lies not only in education, but also in practicing the Confucian ideal of self-cultivation and peace. Its existence is like a declaration of the unyielding backbone of scholars to the dirty customs of the time. I went there a little late and didn't go in. I will go and see it when I have the chance.
Although it is not so famous, the supporting facilities are very complete. If you follow it on WeChat, you will get WeChat voice introductions of each point. This is a great point and worth learning from.
A very exquisite place. It was drizzling when I went there, it was quite beautiful
The educational significance is greater than the significance of visiting the past. The signs of artificial construction in the later period are too obvious, and the small garden is still very clean. There are few visitors, so you can walk slowly and take a look, but after coming here, you will find that there is nothing to regret if you don't come. Therefore, it is recommended that travelers who are in a hurry can eliminate this attraction.
The stone archway at the entrance - the symbol of Donglin Academy, reminds people of the famous couplet "The sounds of wind, rain and reading are all pleasant to the ears; the affairs of family, nation and the world are all of concern to me."
Li Ze Hall - According to historical records, it was the place where Yang Shi, a famous scholar in the Northern Song Dynasty, gathered to give lectures. Because the Donglin Party members were politically persecuted by the eunuch party headed by Wei Zhongxian, historical books have long praised the Donglin scholars for their study and teaching without forgetting the safety of the country.
The two small trees have thin trunks that are straight and tall; the dense leaves are round and well-proportioned but without branches, giving people a feeling of oppression and deformation. I wonder if this symbolizes the fate of the Donglin Party.
Walking along these corridors, you can seem to hear the sound of students reading aloud.
Rebuilt on the original site, it now looks like a children's learning center
Right in the city, you can absorb a lot of historical and cultural heritage;
The ticket is five yuan, which is very worthwhile. It's a pity that while you can enjoy the garden scenery, there are still children reading inside.
“The sound of wind, rain and reading are all pleasant to the ear; family affairs, national affairs and world affairs are all of my concern.”
This deeply rooted couplet comes from this academy, which rose to fame in the turbulent and dark era of the late Ming Dynasty. I don't have the ability to judge whether the people of Donglin are useful to the country or bring disaster to the people. It's good if the remains of such a historical building can make people understand and think about the past history. I really like this academy that is silent in the rain. It must be very pleasant to study in such an environment.
Donglin Academy is a large garden building located in the center of Wuxi. It is famous for its former glory and rich historical heritage, but compared with the crowded Xihui Park and Yuantouzhu, it is very quiet. In addition to the exhibition hall, many buildings have been converted into classrooms - it is said that they are for children to learn Chinese culture.
The ticket seller actually asked me for my student ID. I was so happy for a week and I also caught a few free-range fairy magpies.
Definitely recommend~! It looks very inconspicuous from the outside, and it feels like a free morning exercise park. The door is open on the side, but once you enter, you can really feel the atmosphere of books. It is very quiet, and it seems that entering this courtyard is like traveling back to the past. No matter how noisy it is outside the courtyard wall, it is always very quiet inside. You can hear birds singing and breeze. There is also a Confucius School at the innermost part, where children will have classes. This is the best place to learn about China's profound culture~
The sound of wind, rain and reading is pleasant to the ears. I care about family affairs, national affairs and world affairs.
The history of nearly a thousand years is beyond expectation. It is much better than other academies. If you are looking for humanistic spirit, you can't miss it.
A sense of history, which is pretty good.
There are very few tourists in Donglin Academy. The whole academy is not big and very quiet. You can really feel that you can calm down and read here. Therefore, this place is not only a tourist attraction, but also a place where Wuxi students sometimes go to class.
The memorial archway of Donglin Academy is also one of the symbols of Donglin Academy. It gives people a very solemn feeling and I feel it is very beautiful too!
The small garden in the academy is not as exquisite as the Suzhou gardens, but it is also very comfortable!
Overall, Donglin Academy is a pretty good place. Although it is not as famous as Lingshan Giant Buddha and Yuantouzhu, it is still very good to come here for a walk and a look! I hope that the quiet academy environment can be maintained here.
Donglin Academy, a quiet place in the bustling city. It is not far from where we live. We found this quiet place on foot in the morning.
The environment in Donglin Academy is quiet and elegant. Being there, you are far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and it seems as if you can hear the sound of reading aloud in your ears again...
The scenery of the courtyard is quiet and peaceful. It is a bit clear and sparse in winter, and I believe it will be more beautiful in summer.
Free entry with student ID, the scenic spot was still under partial maintenance when I went there. Not many tourists.
Donglin Academy can be visited for free with a student ID, and the entire academy has a strong cultural atmosphere.
The modern and classical styles blend together. Many elderly people chat here.
While walking quietly, I thought that this was the road that my ancestors had walked, and it seemed as if the sound of reading aloud also touched my ears. At this moment, my soul felt as if it was washed and warmed. It was really worth the trip!
It is a good place to learn about the cultural background of the academy with a Jiangnan flavor.
It was first built in the Song Dynasty, in 1111 AD, by Yang Shi. The most well-known couplet is the one hanging in Yiyong Hall of Donglin Academy: "The sound of wind, rain and reading is pleasant to the ear, and the affairs of family, country and the world are of concern to me."
Donglin Academy closes at 17:00. When we arrived, it was nearly 16:00. We asked the ticket seller, who said we could get out in half an hour. We paid for the tickets, and our student ID came in handy. Seeing that my mother’s hair was a little gray, the ticket seller asked if she was over 60 years old. If she was, she could enjoy half the price.
As it turns out, Donglin Academy is really small, and half an hour is enough.
Donglin Academy, the ticket price is 8 yuan with student ID. Hidden in the downtown area is a college with rich history. It is hard to imagine the history here, the glory here, and the group of people who are deeply written in history - the Donglin Party. History is always written by the people of the time, and later generations can only appreciate that period of time, rather than point out. In the past, no one will ever know the true story. The exploration of history is just to know, but the truth of history and the background of history will not be known by future generations. To love history is just to understand and learn, to appreciate the art of history, and to understand one's own trajectory. History is not geography, and it is impossible to experience it personally. Even if you walk in this old site, you can only see books and learning here, and you can't see the vicissitudes of life here. The old site of Donglin... silently watching the time, just watching generations of talented people go out and come back.
Donglin Academy is a place with rich historical and cultural heritage. Due to the length of this article, please search Baidu for a detailed introduction. I was originally self-abased and thought that if I went out without chewing Yililian, I would no longer look like myself on my student ID card. I wanted to buy a full ticket and have a round of fun. But when I bought the ticket, the uncle asked, "Do you have a student ID?" I took it out decisively... Thank you, uncle...
Donglin Academy is not big, with stone archways, Panchi, Donglin Jingshe, Lize Hall, Yiyong Hall, Yanju Temple, Daonan Temple and other buildings, as well as Gu Xiancheng's famous couplet. Both inside and outside the academy are worth seeing. Some say that you can see the whole academy from outside the academy, but I didn't notice this, but Donglin Academy is still worth entering.
It was very quiet at eight o'clock in the morning. There were old people practicing Tai Chi in the courtyard, and locals speaking the soft Wunan dialect walking around casually, feeling very comfortable.
The Eight Gentlemen of Donglin lived by the waterside and under the trees, but they were interested in worldly affairs. Apart from teaching, they often discussed government affairs and judged people. I went there in the morning, it was very quiet, and I felt the atmosphere of the academy.
"The sound of wind, rain and reading is pleasant to the ears, and family affairs, national affairs and world affairs are all of concern." In the breeze and drizzle, walking into Yiyong Hall of Donglin Academy and reading this couplet by Gu Xiancheng, it feels like being there in person. I feel deeply about the learning environment of students in the old days, which makes people today envious and jealous. It is exquisite and elegant, yet it does not lose its rules and regulations. I really want to travel through time.
Donglin Academy is similar to Tianyi Pavilion in Ningbo, my hometown. This kind of scenic spot, apart from its fame, has nothing much to admire or appreciate. The house has probably been renovated many times, and it doesn't look run-down at all, but after all, I feel that the traces of history are not heavy. Only when walking in it, I occasionally think of the scene where Chinese intellectuals discussed the future of the country and the suffering of the people hundreds of years ago.
Walking in the gallery of Donglin Academy, listening to the elegant sound of the pipa and the rich scent of books, quietly and slowly, I had the illusion of traveling through time.
Donglin Academy is located in the urban area of Wuxi. Although it is in the downtown area, it is not too noisy and the store is very quiet. It is quite famous, but the scenic area itself is actually not big. Anyway, the tickets are not expensive and there are not many tourists. You may as well go and have a look if you have time.
Donglin Academy is officially open to tourists at 8:30, but you can go in before 8:30. Some important visiting rooms are just not open. Tickets cost 8 yuan. There are many grandparents from Wuxi exercising inside.
Donglin Academy is very small. It was raining that day and there were few people. So the whole courtyard exudes an indescribable tranquility. Perhaps the gardens of Suzhou should also be viewed and appreciated slowly under such circumstances.
Donglin Academy gradually declined during the Qing Dynasty. In the late Qing Dynasty, it was renamed "Donglin Primary School" and later "Donglin Primary School". To date, most of the academy is used as a park, and a small part is used as classroom space for Donglin Primary School. On weekends, the local management unit organizes scripture reading classes and English classes, and it is still a place with a strong educational atmosphere.
Donglin Academy is not crowded, more like a street garden. I know it only because of a couplet: "The sound of wind, rain and reading is heard. Family affairs, national affairs and world affairs are all concerned." Entering the lobby, I saw this couplet hanging on the left and right pillars of the room, as if I could hear the scholars' voices. I wonder if the campuses of Tsinghua University and Peking University will become ticketed attractions in a few hundred years.
To tell you the truth, tickets to Donglin Academy are available for group purchase online, so we won’t miss out on saving even a dollar.
I was particularly surprised to find that there was a group of children at Donglin Academy who were reciting ancient Chinese texts aloud under the guidance of a teacher. Later, I learned that this was an activity organized by the local government in 2004 to "bring the sound of reading back to Donglin Academy". Parents who bring their children to play must go there on weekends to let them be influenced by this.
Donglin Academy is located in an alley in the center of Wuxi. It is not very impressive, but the Donglin Party played a very important role in the late Ming Dynasty. The academy was first built in the late Northern Song Dynasty and was rebuilt by Gu Xiancheng, Gao Panlong and others during the Wanli period. The entire academy is not large, but there are many things to see. Almost every room has its own story. It is best to hire a tour guide.
