After breakfast, we walked along the West Ring Road to Bird Island. Although Bird Island has been permanently closed, the scenery is still beautiful. Heima River is located on the bank of Qinghai Lake about 220 kilometers west of Xining. It is the starting point of the Qinghai Lake Ring Road. From here, 78 kilometers along the ring road is the famous Bird Island. The section of Heima River towards Bird Island is also known as the West Ring Road. Many "bosozoku" hikers or bicycle enthusiasts choose to start their dream trip around the lake from Heima River.

The section from Heima River to Bird Island is known as the most beautiful section of Qinghai Lake, presenting different beauty in different seasons: in May, wild flowers bloom and flocks of birds fly; in August, thousands of acres of rapeseed flowers bloom brilliantly by the lake; and in October, when the prosperity is over, the Heima River grassland returns to tranquility, and Qinghai Lake also presents its most simple beauty.

Accommodation conditions in Heimahe Township:



Since it is a town near the lake, the hardware is not very good. In the past two years, some inns with good style have appeared one after another, and the hardware is also good. Most of them are built according to the standards of ordinary economic hotels, and the conditions can only be said to be average. However, the basic conditions such as cleanliness, hot water for bathing, and Internet are still no problem.

Lakeside tents: It seems like a wonderful travel experience, but the hardware is really not good. There is basically no independent bathroom, so you can't take a shower. It will be humid on rainy days, so it is not recommended for family travel. Erlangjian or Heimahe Township is also near Qinghai Lake, so the scenery is similar, and you can walk to the lake. However, most of the tents have been dismantled, so this experience is basically gone.



When you come to Qinghai Lake, the places where accommodation is generally concentrated are near Erlangjian Scenic Area, Heimahe Township, and Huanhu West Road. These are all near Qinghai Lake. Another place that is farther away is Chaka Town, which is a few kilometers away from Chaka Salt Lake. It is not recommended to go there as it is 70 or 80 kilometers away from Qinghai Lake and is too remote.

Convenience: After the development of Qinghai Lake tourism in recent years, accommodation and supporting facilities are much better than before. At first, only Erlangjian had good supporting facilities. Now there are many hotels and restaurants in Heimahe Township and Huanhu West Road (Huanhu West Road is relatively less). And it is more convenient to go to scenic spots such as Chaka Salt Lake or Bird Island from Heimahe, so Heimahe Township or Huanhu West Road is still recommended.



Note: It is important to remind you that July to August is the peak tourist season in Qinghai Lake, and accommodation is extremely tight, so you must book a hotel in advance. The prices are relatively expensive, and a very ordinary inn costs four or five hundred yuan a night, and the supply is in short supply.

The accommodation conditions were the worst this time, but even so it was still hard to find one. But in order to watch the sunrise over Qinghai Lake, I tried my best. It was very cold at night, and there was no private bathroom. It was not bad to go to the toilet in the dark.

After checking in, we had a full meal of mutton in a pit pot, which was much better than the one in Dunhuang. I saw how delicious Qinghai potatoes are. We started to enjoy the fresh air outside. We walked down the high slope with the neighbors, which was so wet that it was frightening. After a while, the rain came, so we moved inside. When the rain stopped and we finished eating, we saw two rainbows, which seemed so close to us. We were in a good mood after eating and drinking! Then we went to watch the sunset over the Black Horse River behind the boss's house. My husband, who was very interested, actually took his son across the river. You know how cold the river water was, hum! He left me alone on the other side. He went to help someone's car that was stuck in the ditch. Several people helped to find a local car and finally pulled it out. It was said that it was rented. It actually drove to the river. It was uncommon and unlucky! Go home. Go to bed early and get up at 4:30 to watch the sunrise, hehe!

In the evening, we arrived at Heimahe Township, which is also a very popular place on the Qinghai-Gansu loop tour. The first reason is that you can see the most beautiful sunrise over Qinghai Lake here. Second, it is the only slightly larger village with accommodation within a radius of 100 kilometers, and the homestays can be sold at the price of a four-star hotel.

When we arrived, there were already many tourists. The main street was bustling with restaurants on both sides. Lele wanted to eat lamb leg, so we ordered a roasted lamb leg and a bowl of hot soup. Oh, it was August, the whole country was scorching hot, but the nights here were so cold that people were shivering!

I had read some guides before and didn't have high hopes for the accommodation conditions here, but the B&B we booked was actually pretty good. The room and bedding were very clean, and there were electric blankets. Although it was August, it was still quite cold because it had been raining for the past few days! It was just that the bathroom facilities were a bit poor. The weather was cold, so we didn't take a shower. We simply washed up and rested.

Coming to Heimahe is not just to ride around Qinghai Lake, but more importantly to enjoy the beautiful sunrise over the holy lake on the plateau. Heimahe, located on the west bank of the lake, is one of the best places to watch the sunrise over Qinghai Lake.

The Black Horse River itself is not a scenic spot, but it is named after the sunrise. There is no ticket. However, there is a ticket for the viewing platform by the lake, which is 30 yuan.

Heimahe Township is a very simple town with only a few hundred households, most of which are restaurants and hotels, and there are also a few small shops.

When we got to the town, Ella and I quickly found a pharmacy and bought some cold medicine. It is said that the local cold medicine in Qinghai is very effective! After taking it, I felt more energetic. So if you are traveling around and you are short of medicine, you can try the local medicine. It is a Tibetan formula and worth having. The price is also affordable.



Staying overnight at Heima River is not only convenient, but also important because you can go there early the next day to wait for the sunrise. The sunrise at Heima River is one of the few must-see sunrises in China.

The price of food is about 2-3 times that of Xining. Heimahe is very cold at night, and the sky is still bright at 20:00.

The sunrise at Heima River is magnificent. I went there in early August. The sun rose at around 6:20 and I had to get up at 5:00 because there were too many cars. If there is one shortcoming, it would be the accommodation: as Heimahe is such a famous place, it's ok to charge 500 yuan a night for accommodation, but the accommodation conditions are too bad. It's the worst night along the Qinghai-Gansu Ring Road. So many people come here from all over the country every year, and many local accommodation owners also come from all over the country, but they have no intention of improving the accommodation conditions. This must be rated badly, so it is lowered by one star.

Heima River is not just black. To watch the sunrise, a group of barbaric locals drove a big truck in front of the sunrise viewing point and charged 20-50 yuan. You worked hard to find a favorable terrain early in the morning to look forward to a beautiful sunrise, but the locals drove leisurely in front of the crowd at the right time to watch the sunrise. When we were only a hundred meters away from the lake, we were stopped by local Tibetans. The road was fenced with barbed wire and an entrance was set up. The entrance fee was 20 yuan per person. They kept saying, "You have to pay to watch the sunrise. If you don't pay, you can't watch it." It's true that "live off the mountain", but without guidance and regulation, it will lose the potential for sustainable development. Although the sunrise is beautiful, it is ruined by human greed. Rather than saying "one sunrise feeds a village", it's better to say "one sunrise spoils a village".

Heimahe is a must-go place for traveling to Qinghai Lake, and it is also the camping place for most tourists. There is only one road, with hotels, kiosks and souvenir shops on both sides. In the peak season of June, July and August, there are many tourists, vendors, restaurants and inns in the evening. Sometimes it is difficult to find a room. If you don't eat and stay here, you have to drive dozens or hundreds of kilometers to find an inn. More importantly, you can watch the sunrise of Qinghai Lake here.
