The ancients revered Kunlun Mountain as "the ancestor of all mountains", "the ancestor of dragon veins" and "Dragon Mountain". Many immortals attained enlightenment here.

Hoh Xil, no tickets required

The Sancha River Bridge, Yuzhu Peak Observation Deck, and Kunlun Pass along the way are all excellent viewing spots, where you can capture the unique desolation and loneliness of the Tibetan area. As for the Tibetan antelope, it depends on luck. We only saw one from a distance at the Hoh Xil Observation Deck, which was worth the trip.

It takes about 8-10 hours to travel from Golmud to Hoh Xil without traffic jams. However, the Qinghai-Tibet Highway is a one-way road and is the main road to Tibet. There are many large vehicles, so the road surface is bumpy and road repairs are the norm. When road repairs are carried out, there will be a long queue of ten miles. Please be prepared and leave enough time.

In addition, altitude sickness is also real, especially when stuck in traffic and experiencing altitude sickness at the same time, which makes the situation even worse. Many people vomit until they are dizzy.

It was noon when we arrived at Kunlun Pass, which is the only way from Qinghai and Gansu provinces to Tibet, and is also a major pass on the Qinghai-Tibet Highway.

At the Kunlun Pass, there is a group sculpture of Tibetan antelopes with the words "Hoh Xil Nature Reserve" written on it, telling everyone that we have arrived at Hoh Xil.



Next to the group of sculptures is the monument to the martyr Sonam Dargye. People who are familiar with the Hoh Xil know him. In July 1992, Sonam Dargye organized China's first armed anti-poaching team. He has always been actively carrying out ecological conservation work in the Hoh Xil area to protect Tibetan antelopes. On January 18, 1994, Sonam Dargye died in a fight with poachers, protecting the Hoh Xil with his life.

Kunlun Pass is located in the middle section of Kunlun Mountains, south of Golmud city. It is the only way to go from Qinghai to Tibet.



We took the Qinghai-Tibet Highway on our return trip. After passing the Kunlun Pass, we were out of the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve and into the city of Golmud. The altitude also dropped from more than 4,000 meters to less than 3,000 meters. From then on, we no longer had to worry about altitude sickness, accommodation, food, and other issues.

It was a cloudy day, with snow and fog, which cast a veil over the towering Kunlun Mountains, making them even more mysterious. Kunlun Mountains are really different from other mountains. The entire mountain has a strange shape and stretches for thousands of miles. There is no grass on the mountain, and there are countless gullies, which look thick and majestic.

When the car passes through the Kunlun Pass, the surrounding scenery is amazing, as if the car is driving in a painting.

There are not many mountains worth seeing on the Qinghai-Tibet line, because the mountains are high, they do not look tall. But this is the ancestor of all mountains. Before the Han Dynasty, this was the end of the Chinese nation's world.

The Kunlun Pass is much lower than the Tanggula Pass, and the wind is not that strong. When we arrived, there was no one there, because we left relatively early.

Passing the Kunlun Pass, the snow-capped peaks are all around us, which is really stunning. The snow-capped peaks in June are particularly fresh.

The air also became cold due to the altitude, so I put on a thick down jacket. I didn't stay at the Kunlun Pass for a long time, firstly because I was afraid of altitude sickness caused by the sudden height, and secondly because it was really cold.

The road is slippery, please be careful. There are a lot of large trucks on the Qinghai-Tibet line! Be sure to pay attention!

(There is a restroom at the rest area at the mountain pass, but the conditions of every toilet in the mountain pass are very bad, so be prepared.)

Golmud---Kunlun Mountains (163 kilometers away, about 3.5 hours' drive). This section of road is very difficult to drive on. There are large cargo trailers entering Tibet along the way. Many roads have been damaged. Many trucks drive very fast, and it is not easy to overtake on a two-lane road. You must not be distracted when driving on this road. You must ensure that you are in good driving condition before driving. You must pay attention to safety. Kunlun Mountains are very majestic and towering.

The Kunlun Pass is 4,769 meters above sea level. My companions said earnestly: Don't jump, don't run. You will feel a little uncomfortable at the beginning, and your breathing will be a little shallow and fast... I walked slowly on the stairs, where there stands the portrait and monument of the Tibetan good man Sonam Dargye, and behind them are prayer flags set up by people who pray for him.

It must be a very cool thing to take a photo with the monument of Kekexili Nature Reserve, and you can get a lot of likes in the circle of friends!!!

Ladies can dress up to look ethereal or dressed up like men. Men can go unshaved for two or three days in advance, wear appropriate clothes and a greasy scarf, and they will surely attract applause from people who have never been here. In fact, this is just an ordinary mountain pass on the Qinghai-Tibet Highway.

Because there were no street lights on the entire mountain and there was snow on the road, we drove very carefully, but we could still feel the majesty of the mountain. Because there was no good place to stay between Nagqu and Golmud, we could only drive north. This was the first time we drove at night on the entire trip, and it was also the most tiring and exhausting one. At night, it is recommended that you choose to follow the car with local license plates. The drivers are generally more familiar with the road conditions, and there are many bends and twists along the way, so you need to pay attention to turning and passing cars.

After all, it is a two-lane road and large trucks all use high beams, which makes it scary to drive at night.

Kunlun Pass is actually the starting point from Golmud to the 4500m plateau over the Kunlun Mountains. After crossing here, the road to Lhasa is above 4000m above sea level, so be careful to prevent altitude sickness.

The climate of this mountain pass is very changeable. We experienced rain and snow and sunny days twice within a week.

One of the most important motivations in my heart for this trip to Qinghai-Tibet is to worship and measure Kunlun Mountain in person and fulfill my long-cherished dream.
