Chongming Island

崇明岛

Chongming Island is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River. It is the third largest island in China and is known as the "Gateway to the Yangtze River and Yingzhou of the East China Sea". It is the world's largest estuarine alluvial island and the world's largest sand island.
The water is clean and the wind is gentle, with natural scenery untouched by human intervention everywhere. The tree-lined island embankment is like a giant green dragon, coiled at the mouth of the Yangtze River.
In the early morning, you can climb to the east end of the levee and enjoy the sunrise over the East China Sea. In the evening, you can stand on the west side of the levee and enjoy the sunset over the long river while listening to the singing of returning boats. It is a refreshing experience.
The island boasts numerous historical and cultural attractions, including Yingzhou Park and Chengqiao Town's Danyuan Garden; Jinao Mountain, and the ancient battlefield where Zheng Chenggong fought a bloody battle against the Qing army.
In addition, there are many farmhouses, such as Qianwei Ecological Village, Yingdong Village, and Gaojiazhuang Ecological Park, where you can enjoy farm food, fishing, etc., which is very pleasant.

The typhoon is about to make landfall, and the visibility in Shanghai today is unusually clear. The three-piece set of Lujiazui is clearly visible before takeoff, and after takeoff, you can overlook Chongming Island accompanied by colorful clouds.

There are many people coming here to play on weekends and other holidays.

China's third largest island, Dongping National Forest Park and Xisha Wetland are both good

On Saturdays and Sundays, we drove to Chongming Island to stay in a farmhouse, taste farm food, go fishing, pick strawberries, and have a great time.

China's third largest island and the back garden of Shanghai.

By Under the city flag |

I never thought that there is such a natural, vast and beautiful place in Shanghai. It is worthy of being called the back garden.

By Low-key |

It is Shanghai's green lung and an ecological island with no factories on the island.

By Swirling Water |

I went there twice. The first time I took the Shenchong Line to the island and went to the southeast side of Chenjia Town to see the sea and reeds. The second time I went around the island, which was great. I loved the quietness of the island. It was hard to imagine that this was Shanghai. It felt more like a leisurely third or fourth tier town.

By Yary's Travels |

The more famous attractions on Chongming Island include Dongping National Forest Park, Dongtan Migratory Bird Reserve, and Xu Genbao Football Base. The entire island is covered with Metasequoia trees, and the environment is comfortable.

By 11 |

my country's third largest island, with nice scenery, but avoid visiting from November to March as the wind is so strong that it's unbearable. We recommend driving there and be careful of crosswinds when taking the cross-sea bridge.

Chongming Island is located in Chongming District, which belongs to Shanghai, China. It is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The entire district has a flat terrain and consists of three islands: Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha. The natural environment on the island is good and has not been damaged by modern industry at all. It is very ecological and environmentally friendly. If you have time, go there and breathe some fresh air!

We went to Chongming Island for a company event. The environment was nice and suitable for group travel and relaxation.

I've been to Qianwei Village Farmhouse, Genbao Football Base, Chenjia Town, and also played horseback riding, archery, and CS in the lavender manor. It was fun.

By Walter Jin |

When talking about Chongming Island, we have to mention Qianwei Village. We had a photovoltaic power generation project there in 2007. Back then, the on-grid electricity price was high, and so were the construction costs. After completion, we visited at least two or three times a year, not only for routine maintenance but also for visiting clients. Chongming is truly a green island, free of industrial pollution, and even its power generation is green, standing firm as one of the last remaining pristine havens of human civilization.

Live in a small farm with your family, eat the vegetables you grow and the fish and shrimp you catch, fresh and delicious. The air is good, and it is a good place for you to spend your vacation and retirement.

By fat hunk |

There are no streetlights on Chongming Island's roads at night, and the road is almost invisible after 7 p.m. I tried riding it for half an hour, but I couldn't see the road at all, so I wouldn't recommend it. The roads on Chongming Island are in good condition, and road bikes are completely fine.

By 2 Nan |

The streets of Chongming Island are very clean and lush with vegetation. Every day, there are trash cans at the entrances and exits, separating wet and dry waste, which is fantastic! However, transportation in Chongming is quite inconvenient, with few shuttle buses and long waits. Self-driving is recommended. Avoid visiting between July and September; it's too hot, and many scenic spots are completely unprotected.

By Little Traveler |

Shanghai boasts a captivating island: Chongming Island. Located some distance from downtown Shanghai, Chongming Island can be reached by subway or ferry. While the ferry wait is longer, the subway is generally recommended for its scenic beauty. Unlike the bustling and crowded Shanghai, Chongming Island boasts pristine flora and scenery, serving as Shanghai's natural oxygen bar and the city's lungs. Many elderly residents enjoy strolling and relaxing on the island, a haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Dongtan Wetland and Xisha Wetland are excellent sightseeing destinations.

By Strong Sheep |

Early summer, the season for loquats, is here, and Chongming Island boasts numerous wild loquat trees laden with pale yellow fruit. Arriving on the island, you'll feel as if it's in a different time zone from Shanghai. Time passes more slowly, there are more plants, and driving is more enjoyable. It offers both the traditional, down-to-earth atmosphere and the interesting, aesthetic quality of life.

By Amber 53210 |

Two days and one night are actually enough for Chongming Island. If you go there in June, there are lavender on the island.

By I'm not a tomboy |

My first trip to Chongming Island left a very good impression. Standing on the bridge at the east end of Beiyan Highway and overlooking the vast rice fields, green woods and vehicles coming and going, my tense heart suddenly relaxed, and I felt that the injuries and tans were all worth it.

By KAREN |

In the past, we had to take a boat to get there, but now we can take a car, which is much more convenient.

By Little Sun |

Chongming Island has become incredibly popular in recent years, serving as a filming location for variety shows like "Where Are We Going, Dad?" and "Go Fighting!" This tiny island offers a unique blend of beauty and wonder. Chongming Island truly lives up to its reputation as China's third largest island. The island boasts a breathtakingly beautiful environment and refreshing air. However, if you're taking a group day trip to Chongming Island, it's best to bring some food, as the food on the island isn't very good.

By hh |

If you really want to visit Chongming Island, it's best to join a tour group. This way, you can avoid transportation issues and visit multiple attractions. If you want to take a ride on your own, take the Shenchong Line 6. There's really not much good food on Chongming Island, so it's best to bring some dry food. Women should also remember to bring some water or toilet water, as it's mostly woods and full of bugs.

By PlanetMP |

Chongming Island can be said to be a very relaxing and pristine island. You can have a great time by driving there in one day starting from Shanghai.

By O end O |

It's a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but don't expect to eat well.

By Relax-왕치 |

Chongming Island is currently undergoing road construction. I heard it won't be open until next year (2019), so if you're planning on going, you can put it off for now and try again next year! There aren't many small shops along the route! I was so hungry I didn't even feel hungry, but I was running low on water! I stopped by nearby residents to get a glass of water; the locals were very friendly.

By Traveling with a snail |

The water on the island is a letdown. Perhaps it's because it's at the estuary. It's all very turbid. The watermelons on Chongming Island are very sweet and delicious.

By Fernando |

Chongming Island is said to be a cycling paradise, but I didn't see many people riding bikes. In fact, upon arriving, I realized how large Chongming Island is, and cycling is quite demanding. Although the Chongming buses run very slowly, stopping almost every kilometer, we were still glad we didn't choose to ride.

By Blooming |

Chongming Island is huge. It's quite cold in the winter with the bitter wind and rain. If possible, go in the fall or summer. There are a lot of speed limits, which are quite strange: 80 in the middle of the road and 40 at intersections. There are pedestrian streets in the city, so if you drive, find a parking lot. The city is small, so there are plenty of places to eat.

By KING |

Very good, windmills, rape flowers, various birds, and of course memories

By Go it alone |

Chongming Island is the last island in the Yangtze River. It is made of silt because it was formed by the impact of silt transported from the Yangtze River, which is similar to the formation principle of Shanghai.

By Can't fly away |

Chongming Island impressed me more than I expected. Compared to the skyscrapers in the city, the rural life here seems leisurely and comfortable.

By Ha ha |

Chongming Island is a pearl in Shanghai. Its temperament is different from the bustling and lively Shanghai. It is quiet and natural, similar to Jiangsu and Zhejiang.

By 🐳Old Fish |

Chongming Island is the Shanghai Farm of Shanghai, which is great for weekend travel.

It's actually very convenient to get to Chongming Island from Shanghai. Just cross a cross-sea bridge and it's perfect for a family weekend getaway. The air quality in Chongming is really excellent, with a rare misty morning (not smog).

Chongming Island itself is a major tourist attraction, and with the embellishment of small attractions such as Dongping, it is even more beautiful!

China's third largest island, the Yangtze River alluvial island, has few people and few cars on the island, making it suitable for cycling.

By kaien |

Suitable for hiking and cycling around the island...

By Li Hanchu |

A large group of people came by bike. The weather was great. We baked potatoes and went swimming in the park.

By Self-salvation |

My wife's relatives live in Chongming, and we visit once or twice a year. The tourist attractions are mainly concentrated in the east and west ends of the island, mainly wetlands and mudflats, where you can see migratory birds in winter. There is also a Genbao Football Base in the middle of the island that you can visit. There are no heavy industrial enterprises on the island, and the main focus is on ecotourism.

By Travel on the road |

It's a good idea to rent a bicycle and ride around the island. There are many cycling teams on the island and the roads are in good condition.

By July's Commentary |

The place is large, the distance is far, there are many fun places, and it is the third largest island in China.

By Toast pineapple buns |

There is a special line from downtown Shanghai to Chongming Island.

It is recommended to get up early in the morning and leave from Shanghai to Nanmen. You can have something to eat at Nanmen before leaving. Nanmen is the most prosperous area with many things to see and do. Chongming's main attractions are two wetlands, a forest park, and an artificial manor (Purple Sea Heron Edge).

It will probably take three days to play all of it.

Forest Park and Purple Heron Edge are very close, both in the north. It is recommended to go to Forest Park first after arriving in Chongming at noon (it is hot at noon), and then go to the manor in the afternoon.

As for wetlands, the area near Xisha Wetland seems to be well developed, with many farmhouses and fishing houses.

The Dongtan Wetland is located in a relatively undeveloped area. It is a migratory bird sanctuary where you can watch the sunrise.

By Cancer who doesn't run rampant |

If you like nature, you can go there. It is very romantic to ride a bike around the quiet island with your loved one. There are also large lavender fields.

By Shark Chili John |

By Eric LeMoal |

What is the ranking of China's largest islands or what? The scenery is pretty good.

By Su Nao |

The resort hotel here is very good, and the others are just so-so.

By Alcohol-induced ghosting |

Chongming Island is indeed very large and suitable for self-driving tours. The island has not yet developed a climate for tourism, and it is more of a pristine natural scenery.

By lotus seeds |

If you live in Shanghai, you absolutely must spend a weekend on Chongming Island during spring or before the summer solstice. Witness the azure skies and seas of purple flowers; watch the sunset over the vast river, amidst seagulls; and witness the morning glow, the vast expanse of the sky and land... But I have two important warnings: TIP1. Never go to Chongming Island alone! The endless sea of flowers, the fluttering of butterflies, and the air are filled with the scent of love. Go with your loved one—the clouds, the blooming flowers, the shimmering sandbanks—everything will make you yearn for everlasting love. TIP2. Definitely drive! While public transportation is available, Chongming Island is so vast (China's third-largest island) that a self-drive tour is the most convenient way to explore. Driving on Chongming Island is a delight for both novice and experienced drivers. The roads are straight, the views are expansive, and traffic is sparse. Green belts are planted with a variety of flowers, including hydrangeas, over a foot tall. Even the most ordinary metasequoia avenues are lined with several rows of metasequoia trees. Just feel free to travel between road movies and romantic dramas!

By Wandering |

Considering the significant environmental and economic benefits of its wetlands, Chongming Island's lack of extensive development and tranquility can be considered a form of protection. Driving along the wetland road, the well-developed greenery and roads, along with the flat terrain offering breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset, offer residents of Shanghai and Chongming a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, making it a perfect place for a relaxing getaway.

By Boiled pork slices |

Chongming Island is so far away that it's a hassle to take a bus, then transfer to a ferry, and then take a bus. Chongming Island's attractions are perfect for a relaxing getaway. It's a great weekend getaway for the whole family and the kids to barbecue and play.

By Little Yunyun is white and fat |

It's a relatively leisurely place to get to the island by ferry from Shanghai.

By TaoM |

Because I only went to a few places, I felt it was okay, but not particularly good~

By Geng Qingteng_Glenn |

I went there for three days and two nights. It's really too far from Shanghai. I had to take the subway and then transfer to a bus. But after I got there, I had a lot of fun. The local people are very nice, and there are many farmhouses there. We were a group of more than ten people and booked one to cook our own food. It was very interesting.

By ~Leaf 🍃Bodhi |

It is becoming increasingly convenient to get there from downtown Shanghai, so you can go and breathe some fresh air.

By A bottle of oil |

A good place for leisure, very suitable for a two-day trip on the weekend, but buying seafood on the island is really a rip-off

Eat farm food, drive along the tree-lined country roads, breathe in the fresh air, and stay at a resort. It's a great weekend getaway.

The first time I went to Chongming was to participate in a marathon. It was next to the forest park and the environment was very good. I went there in June and could breathe very fresh air in the morning. The air was a little humid. Many people from Shanghai go to Chongming for vacation on weekends. It is a relatively good suburban resort.

The third largest island in China, guarding the Yangtze River estuary. There are wetlands and bird sanctuaries on it, which are worth a visit.

By Lin Zi Mu Mu |

I was fortunate to live in Chongming for nearly a year. It is a very quiet island. I don’t feel like I am in Shanghai at all. The air is so good that my skin feels great after staying there for a year.

*Going to the island: (Basically, there are two ways to get to the island: by car or by ferry. If you are driving, please skip this step ^o^)

By bus: Take Line 1 from the train station to Wenshui Road, then take the Shenchong Line 3, the fare is 20, and the journey takes one and a half to two hours. The earliest bus leaves at 5:55 and the latest at 21:00, with buses running every 15 minutes. From Pudong, you can take Line 6, the fare is 18. The final stop is Nanmen.

Ferry: From Shidongkou Wharf, take Line 1 to Fujin Road Station and transfer to Baoshan Bus No. 14, which runs directly to the wharf. It runs from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily, with buses departing every half hour. From Baoyang Wharf, take Line 3 to Baoyang Road Station and transfer to a bus (I've forgotten which bus it is, but it's right below the subway station). Ferry service at Baoyang Wharf is more frequent.

(I personally recommend taking a car to the island, which is more convenient as you don’t have to take the bus back and forth. The ferry is also greatly affected by the weather and will not operate in heavy fog or rain.)

* Sightseeing: (Chongming Bus Station is next to the South Gate, making it very convenient to take a bus to various attractions. Bicycle rentals are also near the South Gate Pier) Dongping National Forest Park, you can go there during the lavender season, the vast expanses of lavender are still very beautiful; Xisha Wetland, I think you needed a ticket when you went there, but I can't remember exactly, there are large expanses of reeds, green and beautiful, you can buy a reed pole at the door and go in to catch crabs; I have not been to Dongtan Wetland

* Accommodation: It is recommended to stay in a local farmhouse, which is quite a lot. The environmental and sanitary conditions vary. Search for some with high reviews in advance.

By Blurred eyes |

Now that the county has been abolished and the district has been established, I hope Chongming will continue to develop ecotourism.

I didn't visit any scenic spots on this Chongming Island trip, but I'm sure I'll be back. ↓ Pearl Lake, for example, is worth visiting. It's a natural oxygen bar, and the bird garden is also worth visiting. They chatted loudly overhead, perhaps even discussing you and me. ↓ I really want to see the lush scenery in the near future. ↓ The bird nests reveal that Chongming Island is much larger than I imagined! The farmhouses we passed by were truly impressive, with their authentic new rural charm. I guess it's worth staying there to enjoy the scenery. The locals are simple and lovely. The islanders are very happy. Completed.
