Shanghai JiaoTong University (Xuhui Campus)

上海交通大学(徐汇校区)

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the oldest universities in my country and is renowned both at home and abroad.
At the end of the 19th century, China was defeated in the First Sino-Japanese War and faced national crisis. Adhering to the belief that "self-strengthening begins with cultivating talent, and cultivating talent requires the development of education," Sheng Xuanhuai and a group of visionary individuals founded the Nanyang Public School, the predecessor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, in Shanghai. From its inception, the school adhered to the principle of "pursuing practical learning and practical industry," aiming to cultivate "first-class talents." Through diligent and tireless efforts, it became a renowned institution of higher learning in China by the 1920s and 1930s, earning the nickname "MIT of the East." During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, faculty and students endured hardships, relocating to Chongqing, persevering in running the school. Many students joined the army and fought bravely on the battlefield. On the eve of liberation, faculty and students actively participated in the democratic revolution, earning the school a reputation as a "bastion of democracy." In the early years of the People's Republic of China, to meet the needs of national economic development, the university restructured a number of its advantageous departments and disciplines to support the development of its domestic peer institutions. In the mid-1950s, responding to the nation's call for the development of Northwest China, the university underwent a series of changes, including westward relocation, dual-location, and independent operation, making significant contributions to the establishment of New China's higher education system and the promotion of socialist construction. In the 1960s and 1970s, the university was successively under the leadership of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the former Sixth Ministry of Machine Building, actively engaged in national defense research and talent cultivation, making significant contributions to the "Two Bombs, One Satellite" program and national defense modernization. Since the reform and opening up, especially since its direct leadership under the Ministry of Education, the university has boldly advanced reforms with a "daring to be the first in the world" spirit. These include being the first to organize a professorial delegation to visit the United States, the first to implement reforms to the university's internal management system, and the first to accept substantial donations from overseas friends, effectively promoting reforms in teaching and research. In 1984, Comrade Deng Xiaoping cordially met with university leaders, faculty, and students, and fully affirmed the reforms at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. With strong support from the nation and the city of Shanghai, the university, with the goal of "strengthening standards and creating first-class institutions," prioritized discipline development, successively restoring and developing disciplines in science, management, life sciences, law, and the humanities. In 1999, the former Shanghai Agricultural College was incorporated, and in 2005, the university merged with the former Shanghai Second Medical University, completing the university's disciplinary layout as a comprehensive university. In recent years, through the national "211 Project" and "985 Project," the university has attracted a growing number of high-caliber talents, rapidly strengthened its scientific research capabilities, and achieved its transformation into a research-oriented university.
Jiang Zemin, former General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The quiet, green campus where I played as a child has now become a bustling tourist destination. The former department buildings and long newspaper racks have been demolished and renovated into colleges or green spaces, losing their former pristine beauty. Autumn is the best time to view the campus, with fallen leaves blanketing the ground in a golden brilliance. A light drizzle creates a truly stunning scene!

Visiting Jiaotong University was a minor factor in choosing my accommodation for this trip. I always felt the campus was conveniently located near the campus. Unlike the winter gloom of universities in northern China, and despite the north-south climate difference, the environment here is more artistic and tidy. I strolled into a large square and saw a group of students wearing red vests, posing for photos on the steps of a monument. Further along, near the end of the main road, two tombstones appeared. They must be the tombs of patriotic veterans of Jiaotong University. I bowed solemnly at one of them and left with a mood that matched the weather. At the end of the road, I saw a signpost. A quick look revealed that the Jiaotong University campus isn't very large. Perhaps, like the old campus on Tianwei Jin Road, it has gradually become a historical preservation area... and the new campus is the main location for studying. Arriving at a building called "Gymnasium," I couldn't help but wonder: could this be the predecessor of a modern gymnasium? The style reminded me of the old building of the Tianjin Veteran Cadre Club, complete with the retro bowling alley inside. Walking past the gymnasium, you'll see an outdoor stadium behind it. It's not very large, but even in such cold weather, there were still many students playing, a testament to their youthful energy. Arriving at the stadium, I was almost at the end of one side of the school. As I was about to turn, I noticed the long, flowing grass in the flowerbed, quite intriguing. The tall trees beside it, combined with the gloomy weather, looked like a scene from Twilight. Walking past the library, I saw the law school's adorable logo. It looks like two dogs back to back, but it could also be a lion. It's a creative design. I have to say, southern universities seem to have a more Western feel. Walking past the law school, I spotted a Starbucks, a rare feature on campus in northern China. I can only understand that perhaps the academic focus here has gradually faded, perhaps becoming more of a graduate education campus, and more of a business venue. I reached the other end of the school again and heard the sound of a fountain. Having long been exposed to the cold of northern winters, I couldn't imagine such a thing operating in winter. As I got closer, I saw it was indeed gurgling. I was about to return to the subway station, but I needed to use the restroom. Seeing the name of the teaching building, which struck me as familiar (I'm an engineering student), I decided to go in and use the restroom. The spacious and bright space inside was refreshing, and the ancient architectural style was in keeping with the engineering school's style.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University currently has five campuses, but the Xuhui campus is undoubtedly the most impressive, home to the original Nanyang Public School, founded in 1896. This is also the university's most historical attraction, with parts of the Nanyang Public School ruins still preserved at Jiao Tong University, the largest area behind the old library.

I took the wrong turn when I got off the subway and entered through the east gate instead of the main gate, so the dormitory building wasn't particularly impressive at first. As I walked along the main road, I gradually began to appreciate the university's history and artistic flair.

I saw old buildings one after another, but many of them did not have detailed descriptions. If you are interested, you can scan the QR code on the wall to listen to the explanation.

The directions marked on the signs are only approximate. The most important thing is to slow down, otherwise it is easy to get lost.

If you keep walking straight ahead without paying attention, you might miss Zhixin Xizhai, the best student dormitory in the country in 1930.

Directly across from the Central Courtyard is the Central Lawn, where passing students rarely stop. Tourists do take out their phones to snap standard tourist photos before leaving, while elderly men and women doing morning Tai Chi exercises rest on benches after a few minutes of practice.

The old Jiaotong University Library, with its red bricks, exquisite and elegant appearance and white reliefs set against the backdrop of green trees, was built with donations from all walks of life, teachers and students, initiated by the 1916 graduating class to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the university.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University, founded by Sheng Xuanhuai in Shanghai, has a rich history and a charming campus.

By Can't get there. |

Arriving at the campus gate, I was pleasantly surprised by the century-old campus. Its strong Chinese influence made me think I was in Beijing. The old library's exterior bears witness to the passage of time. Inside, there's an exhibition on Jiaotong University's history. The corridors still retain their old red wooden floors, so squeaky you'd hear your high heels swaying through the hallways. Outside, a vast lawn littered with yellowing sycamore leaves creates a striking contrast: lush greenery on one side and falling leaves on the other.

This is an old neighborhood full of academic atmosphere. But it is a bit small.

By Big Bad Wolf |

The predecessor of Jiaotong University - Nanyang Public School has a lot of history and is worth a visit

By Kou Chunyu |

Admission is free, no tickets required. Unfortunately, the school history museum doesn't have many exhibits, but the architecture is nice. Cycling under the sycamore trees is the most relaxing experience.

By PACER |

Get a glimpse of the century-old campus. The Xuhui Campus, home to many historic buildings, offers a pleasant environment. If you have time, you'll want to explore the campus. The old Jiaotong University library, now the university history museum, is open for tours. From the East Gate of Jiaotong University, it's a five-minute walk to Tianping Road, where dense sycamore trees line the road.

By Sunny |

As you step into the Xuhui campus, you will see the main road lined with green trees, with century-old buildings standing quietly on both sides. With the mottled shadows of the trees, the entire campus appears tranquil and grand, with a strong academic charm.

Blue sky and white clouds, green grass, and gentle breeze... With my husband urging me from time to time, the casual stroll around Jiaotong University still makes me feel very comfortable!

It is said that the east gate of the Xuhui campus is the old gate of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It has red doors and green tiles, and is a building that imitates the gate of the Beijing palace. It’s a pity that we didn’t pass through this gate. Let’s come again next time we have the chance!

Jiaotong University is my country's earliest state-run modern educational institution. At the end of the 19th century, the defeat in the First Sino-Japanese War shocked the nation, and calls for a stronger China arose. The government needed to develop not only industry but also education. Consequently, in late 1895, the imperial court decided to establish a public school in both the south and north. Beiyang Public School, the predecessor of today's Tianjin University, was established in Tianjin, then the most prosperous city in northern China. Nanyang Public School, the predecessor of Jiaotong University, was located in Shanghai, a bustling metropolis.

Over the past century, Jiaotong University has undergone numerous ups and downs, forming a complex network. Its core network encompasses five universities in China: Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Southwest Jiaotong University (in Chengdu), and National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Each of these branches has also continuously integrated with other institutions as they have grown. For example, Shanghai Jiaotong University merged with Shanghai Second Medical College and Shanghai Agricultural College, while Xi'an Jiaotong University acquired Xi'an Medical University and Shaanxi University of Finance and Economics. Ask alumni of Jiaotong University today, and countless responses will be forthcoming. This century-old institution has flourished.

On this 122-year-old campus, most of the original buildings have long since vanished, but a few century-old buildings remain, such as the Central Courtyard, the old library, and the General Office, all of which are worth a visit.

I didn't have the chance to study here, but I had the opportunity to receive a week of training here, which made up for the regret.

By tread |

I hadn't planned to go, but after visiting, I found it well worth the trip. It's incredibly friendly and peaceful. Each building is uniquely designed, housing a library, specialized teaching buildings, a cafeteria, and a supermarket. I passed by the auditorium on my way there, and a group of elderly people, some with gray hair, were having an alumni gathering. Posters for upcoming lectures were posted at the entrance. Since it was Saturday, some people were playing ball and others were rehearsing, but it wasn't noisy.

By Kitten Black_ |

The campus is beautiful, lush with greenery. I noticed many of the stadiums and libraries are named after people. Looking at the memorial tower, which lists the names of numerous individuals and groups who donated to the campus, I suddenly thought of the word "repay a debt of gratitude." You raised me, and I repay you for your education. This feeling is a testament to social progress, and I'm both delighted and proud.

Jiaotong University is very large. On Saturday, June 2, there were many tourists on campus. I didn’t meet any graduates taking graduation photos, which was a bit disappointing. However, I did see several groups of parent-child tours and parents walking with their young children in this university.

There are two Shanghai Jiao Tong Universities. The one in Xuhui District is more historic, and the buildings are quite beautiful. The other one is in Minhang District, but I haven't visited it, so I can't comment on it here.

The highlights of Jiaotong University in Xuhui District include the old library, the new upper house, the engineering building, the gymnasium, the general office, and the classical architecture at the main gate, among other historical buildings worth visiting. I've always had a fascination with architecture; I can't explain it; I just find it beautiful!

I've always wanted to visit Jiaotong University; the environment is fantastic. I visited the main campus, read about the history of the campus, and looked at the buildings. It made me wonder why I hadn't studied hard to get into this university. Shanghai is exquisite, and so are its campuses.

The signage for the classic entrance was unclear, and I rode my bike around most of the campus before I found it. Near the school gate is the Qian Xuesen Library, which has a very artistic exterior.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University, one of my country's oldest and most renowned universities, boasts a 122-year history. I happened to pass by its Xujiahui campus, and its architecture embodies both historical charm and contemporary innovation. The campus is clean and beautiful, and I highly recommend it.

I have been to some university campuses and found that the campus of Jiaotong University is really beautiful. There are many traces of Western learning in the buildings. There is also a monument to the source of water in the old library building. The gate of Jiaotong University is actually an excellent historical building. There are also the General Office, the National Strategic Research Institute, the Tung Chao Yung Shipping Museum, the Alumni Home and other European-style buildings. Overall, I feel that the environment of Jiaotong University is really elegant, the place is large and beautiful.

By J_J |

Although the Xuhui campus is small, it is very beautiful, with many ancient buildings: the library and gymnasium are both very beautiful, and there are many ancient trees.

By White tofu |

Jiaotong University boasts a 122-year history. While the campus is small, it retains several historic buildings, including the former library, which serves as the university's history museum. The museum boasts a wealth of information, rivaling other museums, offering a glimpse into the university's rich history. The various academic buildings of Jiaotong University are also magnificent, and even though we visited in autumn, the scenery was still stunning. Furthermore, there's a wide selection of Jiaotong University souvenirs, both attractive and plentiful. Visitors can purchase them at the souvenir shop near the entrance or at the souvenir shop downstairs at the Jiaotong University Hotel.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University was originally the Nanyang Academy during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. At the time, the Beiyang Fleet, a symbol of China's reforms, was defeated by Japan in the First Sino-Japanese War. Sheng Xuanhuai and a group of patriotic individuals believed that a strong nation must possess talented individuals, and that universities and colleges were the foundations for cultivating talent. Consequently, they established the Nanyang Academy in Shanghai. Following the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Jiao Tong University relocated to Chongqing. Following the Liberation War, some faculty and students relocated to Taiwan, forming the present-day National Chiao Tung University. Entering through the quaint gate, one is greeted by the quaint library and New Central Courtyard. The library was built in 1896, while the New Central Courtyard was constructed in 1910. Initially intended for student accommodation, it was converted into faculty offices after the founding of the People's Republic of China. With a Western-style veranda on the outside and a Chinese-style courtyard on the inside, it represents a masterpiece of Eastern and Western influences. Since the Tung Chao Yung Building is named after a person, it must have been built with funds donated by the Shanghai shipping magnate. Although many people may not have heard of this person like me, his son is indeed a well-known household name. He is the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Tung Chee-hwa. This building should be used as a teaching building now. The brick and stone structure of the house has arched windows, which should be influenced by Western architectural style. The two photos of the general office below used to be called Yung Wing Hall. It was built to commemorate Yung Wing, the earliest student studying in the United States who introduced Western learning to China. It used to be the main office building of the school and now seems to be idle!

Jiaotong University is a century-old institution, spanning three centuries. The university has several campuses, including the Xujiahui campus, which served as its headquarters for over a century. The campus boasts many beautiful buildings, each nearly a century old. Located in the heart of the city, the campus attracts a constant stream of visitors.

The Xuhui campus of Jiaotong University boasts a rich history, said to be over 120 years old, and its architecture is quaint and charming. It's truly unique, offering plenty of photo opportunities. Two hours is more than enough for a visit. I recommend cycling there; while it's not very large, walking is too tiring. I actually stumbled upon this spot by accident. Yesterday, I arrived at Wukang Road after dark, so I decided to check it out again this morning. The subway stop I took was Jiaotong University, so I couldn't miss it.

If Jiaotong University is not the most beautiful campus, it is definitely the university that strives the hardest to promote itself. Every building on campus (almost every one of them is a historical building) has a detailed introduction and a QR code with rich content. If you don’t have time to read it at the time, you can go back and read it slowly. The old library is very beautiful. Of course, the other buildings also have their own merits. The protection work of the entire campus is particularly good. Jiaotong University is the first choice for Shanghai university tours.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is a comprehensive university ranked highly in China. It has a rich history, and its gate is probably well-known to everyone. It should be an ancient bracket-shaped gate.

Walking onto campus, I could barely see any students except during lunch. It was incredibly quiet, and if you weren't familiar with it, you'd think you were in some suburban area. After asking around, I learned that the Jiaotong University students were all studying in the library. This made me sigh with admiration: these are truly top-tier national universities, and they're truly worthy of our emulation!

In addition, there are many national laboratories in Jiaotong University, all of which conduct many national-level experiments. One of them is an internationally confidential experiment, which I was not able to visit.

As a national first-class university, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is definitely worth a visit. Personally, as a student, I benefited a lot from my visit.

Finally, Adrian, I wish you a pleasant journey again!

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of China's most prestigious universities, boasting a strong academic presence in engineering, business, and medicine. It has campuses in Xuhui, Minhang, Huangpu, Changning, Qibao, and Pudong, covering a total area of 4,893 mu (approximately 1,000 acres).

Although the Xuhui Campus of Jiaotong University is nestled in the heart of downtown Shanghai, the city's bustle is completely removed once you enter its grounds. Numerous historic buildings radiate the charm of this institution, a university that has endured for 120 years and spans two centuries. Meanwhile, the newer buildings on campus reflect the vibrant charm of this historic institution today. I believe it's a true blessing to be able to take a class in one of these historic buildings.

This 120-year-old university in the southwest has a unique feature: the temple gate on the Huashan Road campus. Don't miss the old library and the path next to the lawn. The gymnasium and the upper, middle and lower courtyards are decorated in a retro Republican style.

In addition to the scenery and history, the surrounding supporting services are also excellent. Going out of the west gate is Huaihai Road, and along Huaihai Road are the old concession areas; going out of Guangyuan West Road Gate is Xujiahui Hong Kong Exchange, which is extremely lively; going out of Panyu Road Gate is the famous Xinhua Road, which is said to have the most beautiful sky-covered plane trees in Shanghai.

I visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University for the first time in early 2014, or to be more precise, the Xuhui campus. It was raining that day, so I didn't walk around the campus much. But to be fair, the overall scenery of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University campus is quite average. I mainly visited the Qian Xuesen Library that time, which contains various archival materials of Mr. Qian, including the two brutal graduation certificates below, from MIT and Caltech.

The main part of the University of Transportation is in the new campus in Minhang. There are not many students and visitors who come here for its reputation in the old campus. Therefore, the Xuhui old campus, the real University of Transportation, is worth visiting.

I use the Jiaotong University Xuhui campus as a park. Whether I'm just strolling alone or meeting up with old friends, I often come here. There's a Jiaotong University station on Metro Line 11, making it very convenient; even a leisurely stroll from Xujiahui doesn't take long. As far as I can remember, except for a few special periods, Jiaotong University has always been free to the public, yet visitors are always sparse. It's a rare quiet spot in the bustling city, not to mention the beautiful scenery and charming architecture.

If you want to experience the grandeur of a university, come here. Yung Wing Hall, the Engineering Hall, the Sports Hall, the Central Courtyard, the Upper Courtyard, and the West Dormitory are some of the few remaining old buildings at Jiaotong University, still retaining their original beauty.

If you want to relax and unwind, you can come here. On weekends, on the large lawn with a monument in the center, you can often see a few people playing with balance belts, and you can also see foreigners playing with flying saucers with their children.

We should also mention the Qian Xuesen Library, newly built by Jiaotong University to commemorate the centennial of Qian Xuesen's birth. While it's called a library, it doesn't have books for borrowing; it's essentially a museum dedicated to his life. Its hallmark remains the same: spacious and sparsely populated. Again, no entrance fee is required; a stroll through the library feels like a private retreat. The Qian Xuesen Library is across the street and can be accessed directly from outside the Jiaotong University walls.

The school building has a European feel from the outside.

As soon as you arrive at the entrance, you'll see the iconic stone lions. Inside, there's a lawn where many foreign students sunbathe. The library's architecture is beautiful, and I highly recommend a visit!

Jiaotong University is a prestigious place. We losers can only run around there.

I attended a conference for a few days in the building opposite the Qian Xuesen Library in Xuhui District, but did not spend much time exploring other places further away on campus.

I took the subway to Jiaotong University Station, but Jiaotong University is quite far from the subway station.

The most interesting building here is the old library, which is now used as the school history museum.

There is a large lawn that is off-limits and therefore well protected.

The library of Shanghai Jiao Tong University looks very old. I really like this kind of old building. It is European style and has a very charming feel.

Although the school is not big, it is quite nice. The Qian Xuesen Library is next door.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of China's most prestigious universities, with a profound academic influence in engineering, business, and medicine. After more than a century of development, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has become a first-class Chinese and internationally renowned university that is "comprehensive, research-oriented, and internationalized," and is steadily progressing towards becoming a "world-class university."

There is a post office at Gate 3 of Jiaotong University (No. 655 Fanyu Road). You can go there to send postcards. The postmark will be accompanied by the words "Shanghai Jiaotong University"

Shanghai Jiao Tong University. During my trip to Shanghai, I visited the main campuses of all four of Shanghai's 985 universities. Shanghai Jiao Tong University also has several campuses, and I chose the main campus in Xuhui District. Many of the original buildings are beautifully preserved on the main campus.

The Xujiahui campus is a college with a long history, formerly the Nanyang Public School.

The entrance gate on Huashan Road, commonly known as the "Temple Gate," is now awe-inspiring. Most of the campus buildings, such as the Engineering Hall, the New Upper House, and the Administration Building, retain their original historical appearance. These structures, constructed of red and gray bricks, have been renovated, leaving the exterior pristine and retaining a sense of age.

Between the dormitory area and the teaching area is the famous sculpture of "Drinking Water and Remembering Its Source", which is also the motto of Jiaotong University.

There are both old and new libraries. The bookstores next to the libraries often have a large number of subject books, attracting a large number of people seeking knowledge.

Now, the Xujiahui campus is mainly where graduate students and working students take classes.

As a famous university, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has a campus full of ancient charm. After a brief tour of the campus, I was pleasantly surprised.

The school gate is very interesting, with a bit of an ancient feel. The environment is very good, with many lawns and beautiful buildings.

We were visiting the Xuhui campus, and when we got to this monument, we happened to meet a group of students who were also visiting. I took a group photo with them, and they asked to take one for us as well. I liked the straightforwardness of those boys, so I took the SLR camera, held it in worship, blinked, and said, "This is my first time using it." And they took the photo again and again with great patience, getting the angle just right. There is a kind of beauty called "other people's campus," with tree-lined paths and lush greenery. The university where Du Xiaomei and I went was outside the sixth ring road of Beijing, but it was still pitifully small. However, if you ask me whether I love it or not, I still love it deeply. It has witnessed our growth, from meeting to knowing each other, falling in love, to missing each other, and staying together in the future.

I have a deep affection for Shanghai Jiao Tong University because my son studied here for seven years—four years for undergraduate studies and three years for graduate studies. From the age of 14 to 21, he spent crucial years here, transitioning from a boy to a young adult.

Most of the buildings in Shanghai Jiao Tong University are European-style buildings, which look particularly solid and safe.

The old library building of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is still quite antique and has the charm of a Shanghai mansion. Most of the old buildings on campus are mainly brick red.

The whole old Jiaotong University is actually very small...but the architecture is very beautiful and has a very classical atmosphere. I like it...
