Sinan Road

思南路

Sinan Road was once a road in the French Concession. Towering plane trees lined the road on both sides, giving it a rich cultural atmosphere.
On both sides of Sinan Road, there are more than 20 garden-style houses built in the 1920s. Their styles are varied and almost bring together architectural styles from all over the world.
Today, Sinan Road still retains attractions such as the "Zhou Mansion" commemorating Zhou Enlai, the former residence of Sun Yat-sen, and the former residence of Mei Lanfang.
There are also some specialty shops along the street. You can sit in a coffee shop or visit antique shops to feel the history and romance of this city.

The petty bourgeoisie atmosphere of the French Concession is perhaps even more charmingly reflected on Sinan Road.

There seem to be more garden houses and French-style villas on Sinan Road than on other streets.

No. 88 Sinan Road is a high-rise building with more than 30 floors. Since the height limit for new buildings in the area is 18 meters or less, this small Western-style building is quite precious and has become the goal pursued by the middle class who want to own high-end residences in high-end locations.

Walking along Sinan Road from No. 65 to No. 71, the attentive observer will notice a discontinuous pattern of house numbers, jumping from the 50s to the 70s. Numbers 65 to 71 are all tucked away in an obscure alleyway. The buildings within are surprisingly identical, standalone garden houses. Experts say they are Spanish-style architecture.

Sinan Road is a refreshing alternative among its many attractions. Along the roadside are various old-style houses, including the Sinan Mansion, nestled among sycamore trees. It's recommended to visit in the morning for plenty of photo opportunities. I personally think you can spend 1.5-2 hours here.

This road, less than two kilometers long, is sheltered by plane trees, with Western-style buildings standing on both sides. If the Bund is the face of Shanghai, then this is the secluded backyard of old Shanghai.

There were almost no people on Sinan Road in the early morning, and the stone-like buildings seemed much softer than reinforced concrete.

There are also many celebrity residences and memorial halls, as well as some historical sites on Sinan Road. If you are interested in history, you may want to buy a ticket and take a look.

The word "mansion" in Sinan Mansion is the best annotation of the English word "mansion" and is also the standard translation answer of Baidu entries. I happened to stroll around Sinan Road today. Although there was a drizzle, I was still impressed by the excellent cultural atmosphere and artistic taste of the whole area. Although we arrived a little late and Sun Yat-sen's former residence and Zhou Mansion were no longer open to the public, the scenery of the whole block, the elegant temperament, and the stylish dining can all well reflect the Shanghai cultural life.

There were both unexpected and expected things. We must be lucky enough. Our plan was to go to Sinan Mansion, and we happened to pass through Tianzifang. Then, the first place we arrived at was Zhou Mansion. The architectural style and furniture of Zhou Mansion gave people a warm feeling. Although the colors are very ordinary, there are white and brick red, but they are combined together just right. It was the first time that I felt so close to Premier Zhou. I have seen the roads he walked and the objects he used. It seemed as if I could still feel his temperature, warmth, like a spring breeze.

"There is a kind of life called Sinan" One century, fifty-one garden houses, this is Sinan Mansion.

In the past, this was a place where celebrities gathered, but now it is a good place for people to relax. There are cafes, bars, restaurants, shops, bookstores and other leisure places.

This is also a famous street of historical figures, home to Zhou's Mansion, Sun Yat-sen's former residence, Sinan Mansion, Zhang Xueliang's former residence, Feng Yuxiang's former residence, He Xiangning's former residence, and Mei Lanfang's residence. Compared to the cultural atmosphere of Wukang Road, this place has a more grand feel. Combining the two, I think it's the flavor of Shanghai.

Because my colleague likes buildings like Shanghai Shikumen, we came to visit Sinan Mansion. I have lived in Shanghai for many years, but I have never been here.

If the Bund is the face of Shanghai, then this area is the inner courtyard of old Shanghai. Few tourists, not many cars, and the quietness makes it feel unlike the city center. Behind the houses lie stories of the past, some peaceful, some heroic, some romantic, some poignant. For those passing through today, those bygone days, though now history, seem to be right before their very eyes.

Sinan Road was once a road in the French Concession. It was lined with towering plane trees and many garden-style houses built in the 1920s.

During this trip to Shanghai, I planned to walk along several roads in the French Concession for a day. Hengshan Road, Sinan Road, and Wukang Road were all next to each other. I just followed the navigation and I was there. There were pubs, restaurants, and artist performances everywhere. It was a pleasant place.

Old-style houses, Sinan Mansion, Starbucks. Take a walk in the early morning when there are fewer people and feel the old Shanghai.

By chencurl |

It represents the roads of Shanghai's French Concession and also witnessed the changes between the old and new societies.

By Goldfish in frying pan |

At the end of Tianzifang, you will find Sinan Road, which has a strong exotic atmosphere.

Compared to Tianzifang, the deserted Sinan Road was much quieter. Restaurants, bars, and cafes silently emitted soft light, and through the wooden windows, a few people could be vaguely seen enjoying dinner inside.

By syo |

Sinan Road is lined with towering sycamore trees.

Full of cultural atmosphere

There are more than 20 garden houses on both sides.

It brings together architectural styles from almost all over the world

It is somewhat similar to the Badaguan International Architecture Expo in Qingdao.

Today's Sinan Road

Attractions such as Zhou Mansion are still preserved.

By Meow |

Fortunately, Sinan Road has preserved a variety of buildings, living up to Shanghai's reputation as a "World Architecture Expo." Inside the Sinan Mansion, I saw a house with a large tree growing around it. Its branches and roots have already surrounded the house, and I don't know how many centuries ago it was built.

Walking on Sinan Road, looking at the dead trees around me, and then looking at the gloomy sky at two o'clock in the afternoon, I really couldn't feel happy. I kept complaining in my heart that it was not beautiful at all and it was difficult to take pictures wherever I went.

By White boiled water |

There are many houses on Sinan Road, such as Zhou Mansion, Sun Yat-sen's former residence, etc., which are recommended.

Sinan Road is not long, and it is very pleasant to walk around.

Recommendation index: Samsung,

Sinan Road is right next to Tianzifang. We arrived there a little after 9:00 AM. Coming out of Tianzifang, you'll see a long, straight street. If you're unsure of the route, you can use navigation or ask passersby; it's very easy to find. Sinan Road feels a bit like a tree-lined boulevard, with large trees on both sides, their leaves radiant. The weather was pleasant, and the temperature in June was quite comfortable. Walking along Sinan Road, you'll find old alleys and tiled houses similar to those in Tianzifang, and you'll see many motorcycles passing by. It's hard not to feel a sense of relief along this road.

There is an art gallery on Sinan Road, a two-story exhibition hall with a fee, but due to time constraints we just went in and took a quick look.

Sinan Road, located in Shanghai's Huangpu District, runs north-south, approximately 1.4 kilometers long. It lies northeast of Tianzifang, bordered by Huaihai Middle Road to the north and Taikang Road to the south. Formerly the French Concession, it was built in 1914 and was formerly known as Masnan Road. Dozens of garden-style houses line the road. Attractions include the Sinan Mansion, the Zhou Mansion, the former residences of Sun Yat-sen, Zhang Xueliang, Feng Yuxiang, He Xiangning, and the Mei Lanfang Mansion, making it a veritable street of Chinese historical figures. Take Metro Line 1 to Shaanxi South Road Station, Line 8 to Laoximen Station, Line 10 to Xintiandi Station, Line 13 to Huaihai Middle Road Station, or Line 9 to Dapuqiao Station. The area is a five- to ten-minute walk away.

By Blairon |

A gathering place for the former residences of famous figures, this area bears the marks of time. Even amidst the throng of tourists, the rustling of falling leaves can be clearly heard. In autumn, each leaf appears gilded. This area, home to 51 garden houses, is a living piece of Shanghai's history. Literati love to hold reading clubs here, and literary fairs are held regularly on weekends. It's also a perfect place to create photos at any time.

By Secret Escape Plan |

On both sides of the road are what everyone calls plane trees, but the leaves look like maple leaves? Anyway, the light and shadow created by these trees combined with the sun is very pleasing to the eye.

By PACER |

There are over twenty garden-style villas on both sides of the road, representing nearly every residential style of old Shanghai. As a result, the buildings along both sides are quite beautiful. These include the former residence of Sun Yat-sen, the residence of Zhou Yu, and the former residence of Mei Lanfang. Starting from the H&M flagship store on Huaihai Road, heading south leads to Sinan Road.

By Miss Hui |

Only a few doors are open to the public in Sinan Mansion. The other side is inaccessible. I took a look outside and left.

By Super cute little seal 🎈 |

Sinan Road is a short walk from Tianzifang, a street of Zhou Mansions, restaurants, and bars. This street is home to many historic buildings and small Western-style houses, which I really enjoy. Plane trees line the streets, providing just enough shade to cover the narrow street. Shared bicycles, yellow and orange, are neatly stacked along the sidewalks. Walking down the street in the morning is completely free of the scorching heat of Beijing, which I really enjoy.

By Spring Sunshine |

The sycamore trees run through the entire street, making it quiet at night and suitable for a walk.

By A small boat |

The plane trees on both sides of the road provide a lot of shade, so you won't be too hot even if you walk on the road in the summer. The buildings along the road are also very unique.

By Riding a donkey to Lhasa |

I heard that the plane trees on Sinan Road are particularly beautiful in summer, but in winter~~

By DD |

Sinan Road is truly Shanghai. Sunlight filters through the gaps in the sycamore trees, even if it's not too sunny. A gentle breeze blows. The ivy-covered walls of the Sinan Bookstore are a bit bourgeois.

By tread |

Sinan Road is primarily lined with mansions and villas. The entrance to the Sinan Mansions isn't easy to find. It looked close from the subway, according to a map, but since we weren't familiar with the route, it took us 20 minutes to walk. We entered through a small alley off Fuxing Middle Road. The main road isn't clearly marked. It's a great place for a leisurely stroll. The various villas have been converted into various hotels and restaurants. It was morning when we visited, and it was quite quiet. No one was talking loudly. The occasional chef or kitchen helper would bask in the sun before going back inside. The only people taking photos were tourists, both young and old.

If you don't drink, eat or have coffee, and just look at it, you can kill half an hour, because you are just looking at the appearance.

By Guigui's road to weight gain |

The streets are lined with plane trees and there are exquisite villas. You can spend the afternoon strolling in this historic neighborhood. I especially recommend the Zhou Mansion, which is the location of the Chinese Communist Party's office in Shanghai. You can visit it inside.

By Ting Yip_ppppppp |

Sinan Road is arguably the most famous street in the French Concession, and a walk there is a must. It certainly feels like the "rich area" of the past, with many exquisite houses that exude a sense of nobility.

By Taste Girl |

It is not as literary as described in everyone's travel notes, but there are many places suitable for taking pictures. Girls who love taking pictures should not miss it. You can go in and visit the Zhou Mansion near Sinan Road. You can just scan your fingerprint, but you can't scan your face.

By Always happy little friend |

Sinan Road is shrouded in the shade of plane trees. There are many small yellow cars parked on the street, and the road sections with heavy traffic are a bit noisy.

At some of the residential buildings on Sinan Road, you can see many red flowers peeking out from the walls. These houses all have large gardens, where you can relax at the stone tables, gather with your family, or watch the children play. It must be a wonderful place to be.

By DrZou |

The famous Zhou Mansion is located here. The roadside is lined with French-style plane trees at the intersection of Fuxing Middle Road. It is worth a visit.

By Lu Aben 🎈 |

Sinan Road should be the former French Concession, the cultural heart under the plane trees, and a must-see for literary and artistic young people in Shanghai. Everyone has different concepts of tourism and beauty. The beauty of Shanghai is not just the prosperous Magic City and the fashionable world. Although there are no must-see attractions, it is very pleasant to walk on the road. There are also some foreign-style buildings that are open to the public for free, former revolutionary meeting sites, former residences, etc.

By Fishing Tour |

A leisurely stroll along Sinan Road reveals a vibrant landscape of European-style buildings and sycamore trees. Along the way, you can also visit the former residences of renowned figures such as Zhou Yu and Sun Yat-sen. The precious artifacts on display showcase the enduring achievements of these great men, adding to the historical and cultural atmosphere of the area.

By Meimeili's Zhao Camera |

Sinan Road is a road with a more French style. It is very close to Sinan Mansion, Tianzifang and Sun Moon Light Department Store.

There are dense sycamore trees on both sides of the road, which is very novel-like.

It’s a very quiet street with elegant and charming small houses. When you sit on a bench to rest, time passes slowly and it’s very comfortable.

There are many former residences of celebrities here, and the house styles are also very distinctive. You can walk around and take a look without having to be too specific. You can go to Sinan Mansion to take a look and take some photos.

Sinan Road is one of my two favorite streets in Shanghai, primarily for its cleanliness and orderliness, and the many Western-style buildings lining its sides create a unique charm. On my trip in late March, the trees lining the street hadn't yet sprouted their lush leaves. It's easy to imagine that in the height of summer, whether cycling or walking along Sinan Road, one would be captivated by the expanse of greenery.

Sinan Road, named after Jules Massinan, a French composer from the early 10th century, is a renowned French street. It's said to boast over twenty garden-style villas, showcasing nearly every residential style from old Shanghai. Hidden behind the bustling streets, it slowly narrates the bustling, chaotic, yet prosperous era of old Shanghai.

Sinan Road, originally named Masnan Road in honor of a French musician, boasts a diverse collection of both Chinese and Western architectural styles from old Shanghai, creating a scene reminiscent of an international architectural exposition, showcasing the essence of Shanghainese culture. The renowned Zhou Mansion is also located on this street.

Beneath the bustling city of Shanghai lies Sinan Road, lined with plane trees and lush, elegant greenery. Here, you'll find the tranquility of old Shanghai, the traditions of its alleyways, and a relaxing, unhurried tranquility. Strolling along Sinan Road or cycling through it, we'll long forget Shanghai's fast pace, leaving only the gentle breeze to our leisurely accompaniment.

The same ancient buildings are there. Sinan Road is much less crowded than Tianzifang. It is also quieter and the scenery is beautiful. If the temperature is right, it is nice to walk around Sinan Road.

The French Concession is the best place to walk in Shanghai. The swaying plane trees and the historic buildings from the Republican era make it a pleasant place to visit any time of the year. Now that there are shared bikes, it's even better.

I don't particularly care about the form of travel, whether it's a strenuous backpacking trip or a relaxing, relaxing vacation. I care about the essence of travel. I won't accept superficial travel, or the frivolous, group-based tours that deny me freedom. My travels must bring me fulfillment and joy. Every city has its own beauty, and my journey to Shanghai has been gradual, starting with popular attractions like the Bund and Pudong, then progressing to charming streets like Sinan Road and Duolun Road. I enjoy this kind of in-depth, up-close encounter; it's fulfilling and enjoyable. Every trip I take benefits from the help of many bloggers, who provide valuable information. For example, this time I chose to hike from Sinan Road, Nanchang Road, Hengshan Road to Xujiahuiyuan, and I'm grateful for their help. These routes fully embody the unique character of Shanghai's streets: diverse European-style buildings, lush plane trees, charming décor and facades, and the sheer joy of walking. Sinan Road was constructed during the third expansion of the French Concession in 1914. Named in honor of the renowned French musician Massenet, who died on August 13, 1912, the area centered on Sinan Road was designated a refined residential area, where only Western-style buildings with sanitary and heating systems were permitted. Sinan Road boasts over two dozen garden-style villas, showcasing nearly every residential style of old Shanghai, including the renowned Zhou Mansion and Sun Yat-sen's former residence. From Sinan Road, passing Nanchang Road, it turns onto Hengshan Road, a thoroughfare connecting Xujiahui and Huaihai Road. The lush French plane trees lining the road and the distinctive, upscale European architecture nestled among the trees lend Hengshan Road a rich, exotic cultural atmosphere. However, the recent rise of Xintiandi on Huaihai Middle Road has overshadowed Hengshan Road. Hengshan Road is also a famous entertainment street in Shanghai, with more than 100 bars, teahouses, hotels, entertainment centers, beauty salons, galleries, etc., which attract mature white-collar workers with high-end consumption levels and young people with modern awareness.

Sinan Road becomes increasingly quiet and tranquil as you continue walking. It's a truly relaxing experience. Shanghainese native Hu Ge says he loves Sinan Road the most. I don't know what stories or memories he has about it, but this street certainly has a magical quality that makes you feel comfortable, calm, and truly enjoyable. If you have the time, you can walk slowly hand in hand with your loved one, chatting attentively.

There's an antique garden on Sinan Road. I was attracted by it when I passed by it on my bike at night, so I went in and secretly took a few photos. I couldn't see such a beautiful place without taking some photos. I would be doing my phone a disservice if I didn't. There are many interesting shops on Sinan Road, and I often ride my bike to browse slowly, capturing many beautiful pictures. However, I can only share a maximum of ten photos, so I can't post them all.

Sinan Road is indeed a good place to take portraits in autumn. There are plane trees on the roadside and groups of people in the morning. Sinan Mansion and Zhou Mansion are also worth a visit. It feels great to just walk around there. Zhou Mansion is free to visit and the house has been covered with plants, which is very special. Next to it is Fuxing Park and not far from Xintiandi. There are many former residences of celebrities, which you may miss if you are not careful. You can see the detailed guide in my Shanghai travel notes.

This road is also one of the attractions. What attracted me to walk on Sinan Road is that this road not only has many historical stories, but also has fascist-style villas left over from history on both sides of the road.
