Xujiahui Catholic Church

徐家汇天主堂

The largest Catholic church in Shanghai, built by the French Jesuits, is known as the first building in old Shanghai.
Modeled after French medieval Gothic architecture, the red brick walls and towering bell tower make this centuries-old building particularly eye-catching.
The temple has a strong religious atmosphere and a huge space that can accommodate nearly 3,000 people for mass at the same time. Many film and television dramas are filmed here.
Many believers come here every day to attend mass and pray. The green space in front of the church is a great place to take wedding photos.

To visit the main church, you need to pick up a free ticket at the Xujiahui Visitor Center. The ticket itself actually contains a brochure introducing the various attractions in the Xujiahui Scenic Area. For non-believers, there's not much else to see besides the church itself. Of course, the church itself isn't open to the public.

As for the church itself, it is now mostly used to hold weddings and worship gatherings.

According to reports, Xujiahui Cathedral holds Mass on weekdays, and multiple services throughout the day on Sundays and Catholic holidays. Large-scale worship services are often held during the four major Catholic festivals, especially Christmas.

When you arrive in Xujiahui, there is one attraction that architecture fans should not miss, and that is the Xujiahui Catholic Church.

It boasts a 109-year history. Despite numerous events and numerous renovations over the past century, it has retained its splendor. What continues to amaze us is not only the architecture itself, but also the people who have persevered through generations of this culture.

Please note that there will be religious services on Sundays and the museum is not open to the public before 2:00 p.m.

Located near Xujiahui subway station, it is a typical Gothic building and looks very nice.

By dilicle |

Free attractions, the Gothic architecture is very majestic, the stained glass windows inside are still beautiful even if they were replaced later, and the transportation is very convenient

By 2 Listen to Run |

There were very few people when I went there. The church was very solemn, with European church-style vaults and stained glass windows that were very beautiful and worth a visit.

By raorao |

I like this place very much. The Gothic church is very solemn and dignified.

A nostalgic church faith will help you live a peaceful life

By Patrick |

A very orthodox Catholic church. I was baptized here as a child.

By a moment |

The first time I walked into the church, I was deeply moved by the religious atmosphere as I heard the hymns. The guide at the door said phones were on silent, but photos were allowed. I glanced up, casually pressed the shutter, and left. For those without faith, it's best not to disturb this sacred place.

By Kou Chunyu |

It's beautiful and spectacular. There's a visitor center and a small kiosk at the entrance where you can get free tickets, which include admission to several free attractions at Xujiahuiyuan. Doors open at 9:00 AM. No slippers, short skirts, shorts, or tank tops are allowed inside the church.

By Left half of the wing |

It is free to enter, but you must go there in advance and wait for the staff to give you a free ticket before you can enter. You will listen to the story of the church in an orderly manner. Mobile phone photography is not allowed inside. There are volunteers to lead the tour of the church, one group every half an hour (Catholics do not need to get a ticket, tourists need to get a free ticket at the visitor center).

By Balls |

Girls must not expose their shoulders or knees, otherwise they can only take pictures outside the church. There is still a dress code.

By Guannan |

I have to mention this, and please forgive my ignorance. Opening hours are 9:00-16:00, except on Sunday afternoons. Shorts and slippers are not allowed. It's worth the visit, I highly recommend. I remember passing a street with delicious fried shrimp and internet-famous milk tea. If you can, avoid taking a car, as you can easily miss out on delicious food in the alleys. I was very restrained during this trip to Shanghai, but I still gained 10 pounds.

By Wei Ting |

It was evening when I visited, and the church was already closed. I understand that the church still has strict hours, and hasn't become a mere tourist attraction. Looking around, the high-rise buildings of Xujiahui have squeezed the church into a tiny corner. Advertisements in the alleys even shamelessly use the church as a landmark. I felt deeply sorry for the church, but there was nothing I could do. Perhaps in modern society, it can only bow to capital.

By She |

I was not allowed to enter because I was wearing slippers. Looking at the tourists who were also refused entry because they were wearing shorts or slippers, I felt that there were so many reckless people.

The largest library in Xujiahui was unexpectedly closed on Mondays. Another surprise! It's important to know in advance!

By Wei Chen's little fangirl |

We finished the tour quickly and the scenery was pretty good. Because of my attire, I didn't go into the church, but my friend did.

By Walker |

Nowadays, many believers come here every day to attend mass and pray, and the green space in front of the church has become a popular spot for newlyweds to take wedding photos. I don’t know why I wanted to come to this place, maybe it was because I suddenly had faith, and you can also worship here.

By Chen Qiguang |

But when we were about to go in, my friends from Shanghai were stopped outside. Maybe their pants were too short. It seems that here you have to wear clothes that meet the standards before you can enter to visit.

By pancakes |

Who said there was a night view? I even chose an afternoon to go there.

There happened to be a worship service or gathering on Sunday, I'm not sure, but the seats were full of devout people, and tourists could also stand at the back and watch the ceremony.

The interior of the church is more shocking than the outside, and the crowds and ceremonies are even more awe-inspiring. I am not a Catholic, but I have been volunteering with some Christians and Buddhists for many years. I still admire those who truly do good deeds, and I am grateful for the God and Dharma they worship.

Taking photos is prohibited inside, so I strictly respected their religious customs and stayed at the end. The ceremony in the photo was taken on the outdoor big screen.

I went out for a walk and came back to take pictures of the night view. However, there were no lights. There was only a big screen from the shopping mall opposite projected onto the church, making it black and white.

Finally I put my phone on the railing and took a few pictures with super night view, which looked pretty good.

In addition, there is construction going on at the entrance of the church. It may become a nice green area in the future, with the square leading directly to the church.

By On the road |

I remember that it was free to enter, and the architecture inside was beautiful and majestic, but they didn't allow me to take photos, so I didn't take any photos. When I was looking for photos, I realized that there was no one that showed the whole church, which is actually very beautiful.

The Cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Shanghai, officially known as "St. Ignatius Church", is free and requires a ticket.

By SAMAN doesn't do shaman tricks |

Although I am not religious, I enjoy visiting various religious buildings, many of which are architectural masterpieces.

By Honey Prince |

There are not many people and the building is very beautiful. Girls should not wear short skirts and need to get a ticket first.

By Dark Angel |

Xujiahui Catholic Church, nestled near the bustling Xujiahui commercial district, stands out with its red brick walls and two towering bell towers, creating a striking medieval Gothic-style structure with centuries of history. Its rustic exterior and ornate interior embody a rich religious atmosphere, while offering a rare tranquility in the city. The church's window frames and eaves are framed by granite, while the roof, clad in graphite tiles and adorned with numerous stone carvings of the Son of God and the Lord, creates a solemn and awe-inspiring atmosphere. At night, illuminated by the exterior, the church is particularly captivating. The interior is even more magnificent, supported by 64 columns. At its center lies the altar, brought from Paris for Easter 1919. The vast space can accommodate nearly 3,000 people for Mass simultaneously. The pointed arched doors and windows are inlaid with multicolored glass, creating a breathtaking display of vibrant light and shadows as sunlight filters through the church.

By Er'er |

Open from 9:00 to 16:00, there happened to be a church service on the weekend of April 29th.

By Zimei |

This is a magnificent, exquisite European-style church with beautiful stained glass and paintings. There were devout believers giving lectures inside. The atmosphere was wonderful. There were fresh flowers, including fragrant lilies, by the seats.

When I was about to leave, a believer said to me, "Heavenly Father loves you."

I instantly burst into tears.

Introduction:

Xujiahui Catholic Church is a famous Catholic church in China. It is located at No. 158, Puxi Road, Xujiahui, Xuhui District, Shanghai, China. It is the cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Shanghai. Its official name is "St. Ignatius Church". There are the Bishop's Palace and Convent of the Catholic Diocese of Shanghai on the side of the church. The architectural style is medieval Gothic.

Construction of the current cathedral began in 1904, the 30th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, and the main hall was completed in September 1910. The five-story building, constructed of brick and wood, is in the French medieval style. Flanked by Gothic bell towers with spires, the main hall stands 50 meters tall. Inside, a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus stands atop the altar, overlooking the entire building and serving as the centerpiece. The cathedral covers an area of 2,670 square meters, with a floor area of 6,670 square meters, and can accommodate over 3,000 people.

In 2013, it was listed as the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units.

In September 2016, it was selected into the “First Batch of China’s 20th Century Architectural Heritage” list.

This was my second time to take photos in a church. The first time was at the Catholic Church in Shaoxing. I have always been interested in architecture, and the architectural styles of foreign churches have always been very special.

I really like this church⛪️. I finally checked in here~

By Ten grapefruits |

I had read reviews saying that this place has a good atmosphere and if you're lucky you might even see a wedding taking place there. But I was unlucky as the church closed after 4pm.

By Nannan |

The lobby is flanked by Gothic bell towers with spires. It's a perfect place for photos, and those who enjoy photography should check it out. The Xujiahui Catholic Church is a wedding venue, catering to urban professionals and intellectuals who yearn for a sense of solemnity, sanctity, and romance. The Catholic Church has always advocated for the sanctity of marriage, love between spouses, and a love for life.

When I watched the TV series "Old House Has Joy" with Zhang Xinzhe's songs as background music, I fell in love with this church at once. Later, I went to see it specially. Unfortunately, the old houses where the TV series was filmed have been demolished to build villas. Fortunately, this church is still there, and the later TV series "Fated to Love You" was also filmed here.

By jyun2001 |

Come visit after the renovation is completed. The opening hours are from 9 to 16 o'clock, and only in the afternoon on Sundays. Visitors are not allowed to enter if there is a mass.

You need to go to the tourist center next to it to get the combined ticket for Xuhuiyuan.

There is a statue of the Virgin Mary on the right side of the church.

The road in the middle of the church is generally not allowed to be walked on, but no one cares.

The church has many glass paintings, three layers high, covered with wire, so you can only see them clearly from the inside out. The paintings are all about religious stories, and there are no introductions, so I can't understand them.

There are small prayer rooms at the back and on both sides, and the tombs of two bishops can also be seen.

It is difficult to capture a panoramic view when taking photos outside.

Alpha & Omega.

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." Revelation 22:13

It took me three trips to Shanghai before I finally got to visit the Catholic church I'd longed to enter. After over two years of renovations, it reopened to the public at the end of last year. Originally, Weibo had advertised that it was closed to non-believers, so I hadn't planned to go before arriving in Shanghai. But when I arrived in Xujiahui, I couldn't give up and decided to check it out, even if it was just a glimpse from a distance. When I arrived, it was crowded. A foreign wedding had just concluded. I stood at the door, cautiously peering in. The social worker at the door said, "Go inside quickly; the explanation is about to begin." The joy I felt at that moment was indescribable. I remembered a quote from Shen Congwen: "Everything has its coincidences, but the results are as inevitable as fate." After the social worker's explanation, we were free to explore freely, and were reminded not to make loud noises or use flash photography. (A friendly reminder: it's really dark inside [sigh], so it's best to bring a camera. PS, don't bring a selfie stick.)

Built in 1910, it boasts over a century of history and is well worth a visit. Admission is free. Located behind Exit 3 of Xujiahui Metro Station.

The church is easy to find. Due to schedule reasons, I did not go in and just took a look from the outside.

I've always wanted to come here. It was under renovation and has just been completed. Although I'm not religious, I was really shocked. It's very beautiful.

By Diving without bubbles |

On the evening of December 31, 2017, I visited the Xujiahui Catholic Church, which had just reopened after four and a half years of renovations. I went inside and took a look. It was truly magnificent. Although I'm not a churchgoer, I was captivated by the solemn and awe-inspiring interior and stained glass windows. There was a religious supplies store just outside the entrance for believers to purchase.

I was really looking forward to it, but when I got there, I couldn't go in for some reason, so I just took a photo outside. This year, when I went to Guangzhou's Sacred Heart Cathedral, it was closed, so if you're planning to visit any church, be sure to check all the information.

By There are so many delicious things |

The entire Xujiahui area is very interesting. You can first go to the visitor center next to the Xujiahui Catholic Church to get a map, and then explore it bit by bit. Sometimes you can go into the Catholic Church to listen to mass, which is also an experience.

By Flower Tribe |

Warm reminder: Friends traveling from other places, don’t go there in August, as there is construction going on inside and you are not allowed to enter.

By Xiaohui |

I forgot where I saw the Xujiahui Catholic Church, but I really wanted to go and see it, but there was only an older church there, in medieval Gothic style, quite distinctive, but not very big. It was still under renovation and not open to the public. I just sat on the lawn outside and then changed buses to go back to Huangpu District. I suggest that if you are not on the route, you can skip this stop.

The Xujiahui Catholic Church is free and requires a ticket. If you're passing by, you can stop by. However, there are dress codes: no high heels, no skirts above the knee. Photography is prohibited inside, but you can sneak a photo at the entrance. If there's an event going on inside and it's crowded, no one will supervise. Although I'm not religious, the building itself is comforting. I have a strong connection to churches, and I believe love has nothing to do with faith. God will hear my voice. May God bless the kindhearted.
