China Protect Panda Research Center Ya'an Bifengxia Base

中国大熊猫保护研究中心雅安碧峰峡基地

The Giant Panda Base, located within the Bifengxia Scenic Area, boasts expansive mountain and forest scenery and stunning natural beauty. It's a refreshing summer retreat and a perfect environment for the giant pandas. Following the Wenchuan earthquake, several injured giant pandas from Wolong were brought here for rewilding. The pandas are divided into three areas: those for returnees, young pandas, and adult pandas. Most of the pandas laze about high in the trees, creating a delightful sight.

The first thing you see when you enter the panda park is a few giant pandas. Each one has a wooden house, commonly known as a panda villa. These adorable pets spend their days sleeping, in all sorts of strange positions. Even so, they're still incredibly cute.

There are three spots for viewing giant pandas in the Ya'an Bifengxia Giant Panda Research Institute. Each spot is not far from each other.

The third point is far away, and we wanted to leave when we unexpectedly heard the calls of squirrels on the way here. Compared with the pandas at the first two points, the giant pandas at the third point are much more lively and very lovable.

There is a giant panda base in the scenic area, which integrates scientific research, breeding and tourism. It is divided into three exhibition and visiting areas: White Bear Square, Kindergarten and Returned Giant Panda Park.

The battery car ride was very convenient and relaxing. The pandas were very cute.

Together with the Bifengxia Scenic Area, there are many semi-wild giant pandas, but the overall feeling is not as good as the Chengdu Panda Base.

The environment is very good and natural. You can see pandas very close, and there are not as many people as in the Chengdu Panda Base.

This base was built for scientific research needs, and not many people from Sichuan make a special trip to see the giant pandas.

It is very suitable for bringing children to play, there are many cute panda babies

Time: November 2014. I went there during the APEC holiday. The ticket was bundled with the Bifengxia Scenic Area, which was a bit expensive. There are said to be more than 80 giant pandas, but I didn't see many. However, I saw a sleeping panda baby.

From a panda viewing perspective, both here and the two panda sanctuaries in Chengdu are exceptional in both quantity and quality, and both are worth visiting. The sanctuaries cover a large area, and the pandas are relatively dispersed. If you prefer not to walk, you can purchase a ticket and take the eco-friendly shuttle bus from the sanctuary to each location. Of course, walking isn't too far either. Pandas are very territorial, and each panda has its own large roosting area.

Around five o'clock in the afternoon, it was also the pandas' meal time. The staff shouted "It's time to eat" several times in Sichuan dialect. The panda that had been playing on the stairs immediately turned around and went back indoors. Another panda that was eating bamboo also dropped the bamboo and went back into the house to eat. It was very funny.

By Cold air in Shanghai |

Since the scenic area doesn't open to the public until 1:30 PM (I can only say that giant pandas have plenty of sleep), we opted to dine at a farmhouse within the scenic area. This option has two advantages: first, it prevents the car from being exposed to the scorching sun, and second, it saves us the 7-kilometer hike up the mountain. Of course, if you prefer walking, you can park at the scenic area parking lot and walk up from the base. While the food was basic, it was especially enjoyable to be able to enjoy it with so many interesting people. After dinner, it was a 5-minute walk from the farmhouse to the Bifengxia Giant Panda Garden. The map clearly shows that if you enter the garden from the visitor reception center, you'll have to walk a long way, or you'll need to take the scenic area's zebra viewing vehicle, otherwise you'll likely expend most of your energy on the journey. Why does the scenic area open until 1:30 PM? Presumably, this is to give the giant pandas plenty of time to sleep, making it convenient for tourists to take photos while they're eating. Otherwise, they might just end up sleeping, like you see at the zoo, which would be a waste of time. The first thing you enter upon entering the entrance is the panda nursery, home to the panda cubs. While you're still wondering why you can't see any pandas, the cubs are happily enjoying their meals. In the adult panda area, some are nibbling bamboo, others are resting, and no matter what, they're all adorable. Even if you spend the entire day here, you won't get bored; these adorable pandas are simply too cute. For those tired of walking, there are paid shuttle buses available to pick you up, saving you the trouble of repeated detours.

Panda Paradise and Ya'an Bifengxia Panda Base are very good

By There's only one person on the road |

The park is truly beautiful, nestled against a mountainside, with lush trees and verdant bamboo. As we walked in, the pandas hadn't been released yet. The staff must have started work at 8:30 and were still preparing, as we saw trucks carrying fresh bamboo along the way. When we arrived at the Returned Panda Park, we saw an adult giant panda munching on bamboo. Turning a corner, we saw another panda eating bamboo. Its paws gripped the thick bamboo like human hands, and it bit into the bamboo, snapping it apart with a pleasing snap. It was devouring the food with relish.

Each panda enclosure here is built along the mountainside, resembling the pandas' natural habitat, with lush, dense forests. Some pandas hide in the trees, leaving only their black and white silhouettes.

By The delicate flowers on the other side stand upright |

The red pandas and giant pandas are both lazy and dirty, but the natural scenery inside is pretty good.

Due to the hot weather when we went, there weren't many pandas out. We only saw about ten in total, but that was still a good number! We were very lucky!

By . Leisurely. |

The air is very good, the pandas are very cute, everything is outdoors, and the tour route is also very simple

By Mao Dai |

It was almost 11:40 when we arrived, and we missed the morning opening time of the Panda Park. We bought the tickets online in advance and exchanged them at an office on the right side of the visitor center. It was very ZZ... Then the staff asked us if we were from other provinces,

They said there was a 50% discount for out-of-province tickets and asked me to refund the tickets I bought online. Is there such a discount? Why didn't they mention it on the official website or Weibo? ... They gave us a slip and told us to go to the ticket window to buy our tickets... Although they forced us to buy 10 yuan insurance and the online refund cost another 10 yuan, the 50% discount was still a good deal.

We then followed the signs to the Bifengxia Canyon Scenic Area sightseeing bus boarding point. There was a gate, but no one was checking tickets. We even went to the gate to scan our tickets ourselves... The driver didn't check our tickets after we got on the bus either... It took about 15 minutes to get off at the Panda Base Station.

Note: The sightseeing bus departing from the entrance goes directly to the Panda Base and does not stop at other stations. The returning sightseeing bus will ask you if you want to get off at several points. Once you get off, you will be greeted by the women from the farmhouse who are soliciting customers.

The full name of this panda base is the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (Ya'an Bifengxia Base). It is a different organization from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

We lined up at the ticket gate, waiting for the park to open. Then, when we tried to use the turnstiles, the attendant told us to go to the side... a road without turnstiles...? What's that turnstile for? I paid 15 yuan per person for the sightseeing bus.

The sightseeing bus route is from the entrance to the Returned Panda Park (furthest from the entrance) to the Panda Kindergarten, then to the White Bear Terrace, and finally to the entrance. Each stop is relatively close, but the route is generally hilly. On rainy days, the noble Returned Pandas are reluctant to come out.

The keepers tried to get them out, but the noble pandas, returning from overseas, ignored them. When we arrived at the panda nursery, we saw a particularly lively panda in a tree, completely different from the slow, almost motionless panda we'd always imagined. He was incredibly playful.

Walked back to the panda kindergarten...

Nanny called out to Qiao Liang from below for a long time before he finally climbed down. Qiao Liang began to eat, while Nanny continued to call out to Joey. After a long while, Joey finally climbed down. He returned to the two pandas he had first seen, performed a panda descent for the other two-legged creatures, and then returned to the house. Then he walked to Baixiongping. The rain had fallen heavily, and there were no pandas to be seen. After watching for a while, one finally emerged.

There is a very ugly statue at the door!

By Morion cat |

The only thing you need to do at the Panda Base is to buy a scenic area ticket. The entrances to the zoo and scenic area are on either side of the visitor center. Due to time constraints, I didn't go to the zoo. Unfortunately, the panda nursery at the Panda Base was closed for renovations and maintenance, so I couldn't see any baby giant pandas. I could only see adult pandas, and there were only a few of them, about ten or so, kept in separate captivity.

Hmm...it's still cute.

By Lonely Dancer |

The scenic area and animal area are both very good, it is worth visiting, the pandas are so cute

By Zhang Yang's Xiao Qiang |

Emma, the scene at that time was really loud with gongs and drums, firecrackers blasting, red flags waving, and huge crowds of people... It can't be helped, who told us to catch up with the May Day holiday~

We took a special sightseeing bus into the scenic area, and there was no extra charge. We spent 60 and didn't spend any more money. You can just sit on the sightseeing bus to the end.

The base isn't very big, and you can walk around it in about half an hour or so, so there's no need for a map. There was originally a unique pavilion called a kindergarten, which was where baby giant pandas were raised. Oh my god, it was under renovation when I went there. I'm so lucky!

We went to the Wildlife Park first, but it was still early. If you come to Ya'an and don't go to the Giant Panda Base, it's like you haven't been to Ya'an at all.

The Bifengxia Scenic Area is located in Bifengxia Town, Yucheng District, Ya'an City, Sichuan Province. In recent years, the basic service facilities of the scenic area have been comprehensively upgraded. The Bifengxia Scenic Area is divided into the Bifengxia Canyon area, the panda base area and the wildlife park area.

Pandas are very cute. I recommend going there. The scenic spot is quite mature.

If you're just looking to see the pandas, I wouldn't recommend it. Bifengxia is mainly for the scenery and the wildlife park. If you haven't seen pandas or have children with you, you can stop by while you're sightseeing.

On December 26, 2001, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Giant Panda Ecological Park at the Bifengxia Base for the Conservation of the Giant Panda in Ya'an, China, marked the official start of construction in Sichuan Province of the world's largest semi-free-range giant panda base. Invested in by the State Forestry Administration, the park, with a first-phase investment of 30 million yuan, will be divided into four functional areas: a breeding area, an office and living area, a bamboo-based area, and a wild panda training area. Upon completion in December 2002, the park will officially open. By then, Bifengxia will be home to over 16 giant pandas, with the number expected to reach 40 within three years. This will ultimately make Bifengxia China's largest semi-free-range giant panda ecological park, integrating giant panda breeding research, education, and ecotourism.

We decided to go on a whim. It was already late when we left Chengdu. We arrived at 3 or 4 o'clock, and the pandas were resting. So it's better to go early in the morning. There are many shade trees inside. If you can't wait for the pandas to come out, you can rest and enjoy the green scenery. Don't be like us... We went there and saw nothing.

By Lychee |

The pandas look very cute, but it seems that they only know how to sleep in the trees. There are so many tourists, I wonder if it will disturb their peace.

By An idle person |

It was nice to see pandas up close, but we went a little late that day and the pandas had all gone back to their cabins, so we didn't see many. The red pandas are so cute!

By Pineapple Milk |

There's not much to see at the Panda Conservation Base, with only the Red Panda Kindergarten and the Couple's Pavilion. The kindergarten is quite nice, with its adorable, cute little pandas. It's said the viewing distance is a bit closer than in Chengdu, but beyond that, there's not much else to see. The electric cars in the park are worth a ride, as the distance is quite far. The 15 RMB round trip is worth it, but there are no cars during the lunch break, so you need to calculate your time carefully to avoid only being able to ride halfway.

By Zeng Yuan |

There are sightseeing buses from the panda base to the pandas' residence, but the bus ticket is really not worth the distance. It's just a short walk away! The national treasures eat bamboo and play here.

By Bounce |

Ahem, this panda base in Bifengxia truly treats pandas as a health-conscious place. They're truly wild... climbing trees for tens of meters. One downside, though, is that there aren't many pandas here yet, and the tour routes are relatively limited. Unlike the Chengdu Giant Panda Base, where you can enter via Route A and exit via Route B, there's only one viewing path here; you can return the same way you entered. Generally, an hour is plenty of time to see the pandas.

By The years whisper |

The panda base is in Bifengxia. I had no interest in pandas, but my companions insisted on going. There are quite a lot of pandas. If you like pandas, I recommend going there. But the most intoxicating thing is the screams of girls.

By Tang |

Ya'an is a truly wonderful place, incredibly beautiful. It's known for its "Three Yas": Ya Yu, Ya Yu, and Ya Nu. Imagine what it's like. The Bifengxia Panda Reserve is right here. You can see pandas from cubs to adults. The Bifengxia base itself is beautiful, with its deep valleys and tranquil forests, and it's worth a few days' stay.

By CC |

Through the doorway, I saw a super cute giant panda, standing on its tiptoes and scratching the soles of its feet. From then on, I had a fondness for this place!

By Lime in the rain and snow |

In fact, it is better to go to Chengdu Zoo to see pandas here. There are only a few pandas in it, and they are very scattered and dirty. I don’t recommend it.

By S coriander |

The panda is so adorable. I saw it fighting with the keeper for bamboo and then eating it with such relish.

By FLH Dayao |

By sunnyqin0110 |

It's ok to take children to get in touch with nature, but there are too many people...

By Half a cup of autumn wind |

It feels pretty good.

1. Transportation: Don’t take a private car to go up and down the mountain (very expensive). There are buses from the bus station that only cost a few dollars.

2. Food: The snacks are pretty good.

3. Scenery: The protective measures at the zoo are quite good.

3. For the first time, the animals felt that tigers were not scary but super cute and were well taken care of. The baby pandas were too lazy and so silly and cute.

But the treatment of the animals is quite different. Some have huge luxury suites, while others are shabby rooms covered with moss. No one takes care of the ostriches, they are very dirty, and the environment is also terrible.

By Sung |

Pandas are so cute *^o^*. They put the bamboo leaves they eat into their mouths in a neat order. They find specific places to poop by themselves. They are so smart! There are also many pandas in the trees. Aren’t you too lively?

By to be honest |

The Bifengxia Panda Base, located within the Bifengxia Scenic Area in Ya'an, is a must-see for any visitor to the scenic area. The base's greatest achievement came after the 2008 May 12 earthquake, when the entire scenic area staff was mobilized to make emergency adjustments to the zoo and accommodate a large number of panda cubs from the Wolong Panda Base, making a significant contribution to the protection of this national treasure. Today, the base has become a major giant panda conservation center in my country.

By Manxi Muzi Li |

When I went there, the panda base was still under construction and there were only a few places where pandas could be seen. There were about 6 pandas sleeping in the trees, not moving at all. At first everyone was wondering if they were fake.

The Ya'an Bifengxia Research Base for the Giant Panda is located in the Bifengxia Scenic Area just north of Ya'an City, 18 kilometers from downtown Ya'an and 150 kilometers from Chengdu. It covers 1,074 mu (approximately 1,074 mu) and currently houses 22 captive giant pandas. The base is a panda paradise integrating giant panda breeding, reproduction, scientific research, rare wildlife rescue, and education. The base is divided into several functional areas: a panda breeding area, a breeding area, a scientific research area, and an office area. Since its opening, the base has focused on giant panda breeding, publicity, and education, while also supporting the rescue of wild giant pandas in neighboring areas. Leveraging the base's comprehensive functions of breeding, rescue, research, and education, the base aims to further expand the existing population over the next three to five years while maintaining a stable population. This will provide more genetic diversity and captive-bred individuals for release into the wild, ultimately achieving the goal of protecting and saving giant pandas.

The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda was established in 1980. Over the past two decades, through the unremitting efforts of scientific researchers, the three major difficulties in breeding giant pandas have been overcome: difficulty in estrus, difficulty in mating and conception, and difficulty in raising and surviving cubs. A total of 121 giant panda cubs from 81 litters have been bred, 105 of which survived, making China the world's largest captive population.

By Ding Ding |

Bifengxia is quite nice. I went there during my university graduation trip. It was drizzling in June. It was ok to play in Bifengxia without an umbrella, and the air was moist and I didn't feel thirsty.

By Hey, girl |

It was a bit cold when I went there, so I only saw three or four pandas. But it was worth it to see the baby pandas through the glass window.

By 8848 |

The journey was long. We started from Chengdu and didn't see many giant pandas when we got there. It's not as good as the zoo. The only difference is that the giant pandas have a better living environment and a larger area for activities.

By Cat looking at the starry sky |

In Bifengxia, we paid for the sightseeing bus when we went there, but later we found out that it was completely unnecessary. What’s even more disappointing is that we didn’t see any pandas. I don’t know if it was because we were unlucky, but there were a lot of tourists at the time, and many people didn’t see many pandas. To be honest, if you want to see pandas, the Panda Base in Chengdu is much better than this place!

By The Beast of the City |

Although I live in Sichuan, I don't see many pandas. The Chengdu panda base has more people than pandas, but here there are more pandas than people. I encountered a well-trained panda that posed for photos when people took pictures. It was so cute.

After the Wenchuan earthquake, the pandas from Wolong moved here. Bifengxia itself is a V-shaped canyon with beautiful scenery. The panda base on the top of the mountain is one of the most worthwhile attractions in Ya'an.

By Grass on the horizon |

Pandas are so cute. You must go see them. Many celebrities have adopted them.

By Beyond the clouds and mountains |

The Bifengxia Panda Base was our main reason for visiting Ya'an. We wanted to see giant pandas up close. While the Chengdu Wolong Base was also excellent, we wanted to visit the pandas' habitat and experience their natural habitat. The base is located within the Bifengxia Scenic Area. You can visit it while you're there, or you can take the scenic bus directly from the entrance to the base, allowing you to see the pandas first and then explore the surrounding scenery. The base has electric cars for 15 yuan per person, but I personally prefer walking. We saw many pandas, some lying down, some eating bamboo, some strolling, and some rolling around. They were so adorable. There are actually many pandas at the base, but only a limited number are open to visitors. At the far end of the base, there are a few red pandas in a separate area, where many visitors take photos. We also heard the pandas calling, which sounds like sheep, and later we learned that this is the call pandas make when they're courting.

By Little wild donkey |

When I went there, part of the panda base was still under construction, so there weren't many pandas. However, I saw some newborn baby pandas and four or five giant pandas. I happened to catch them having lunch, and the way they ate was so adorable!

By cocos |

I only saw 2 pandas. To be honest, the others were under maintenance. It can be said to be the most boring place. It is not as good as the Panda Base in Chengdu.

By Mint Love |

It's a bit cold in winter. Ya'an loves rain, and it rained on the day I went there. Although the air is really good. You need to be careful when feeding wild animals. A child's arm was bitten off long after I came back. Good supervision is actually worth going.
