Leshan Giant Buddha

In the morning, I took the 7:21 bullet train from Chengdu East to Leshan and arrived at about 8:39. At the exit of the high-speed rail station, there are tickets for the scenic area through bus, which I sincerely recommend. It only costs 5 yuan per person, and the bus will depart when there are 25 people. On the bus, they will explain the sightseeing routes in Leshan. One is the lazy way, which is to take a boat to the Eight Immortals Cave, which costs 35 yuan for 30 minutes and take a panoramic view. When I went there, the Buddha had just been repaired a few days ago and the scaffolding had been removed; the second way is to go up the mountain. My suggestion is to climb from the back mountain and exit from the east gate of the front mountain. If you have one day, it is enough. The ticket for the front mountain is 40 yuan, and the ticket for the back mountain is 80 yuan, a total of 120 yuan.

Let's start with the key points. Take the through bus from the high-speed rail exit to the parking lot for 5 yuan per person. After getting off the bus, walk directly to the Eight Immortals Cave. Ask the staff to buy tickets for you to take the boat for 35 yuan per person. You can enjoy the panoramic view of the Buddha for 30 minutes. It is better if it is cloudy. There will be reflections when taking photos under the sun. Then the scenic area through bus will take you to the back mountain, and the tickets will be bought for you. You will enter from the back mountain. It is best to hire a tour guide for 60 yuan per person. The explanation is very detailed. If you are alone, he will help you take pictures. The most important thing is that the tour guide will tell you where you can take pictures, where you can't take pictures, and what position and angle are the best for taking pictures.

After playing in the back mountain, the tour guide withdrew, because the explanation of the back mountain was 60, and the explanation of the front mountain was another 60. When we arrived at the front mountain, the plank road was closed for repairs a few days ago, so we could only take pictures of the Buddha's head.

The most famous scenic spots are the 70-meter-high Leshan Giant Buddha, the 33-meter-high Sitting Buddha in the Cave, the 51-meter-high Medicine Buddha, and the 170-meter-high giant reclining Buddha.

The whole scenic area takes about 3 hours to tour. You can take the K1 bus out of the scenic area and bring your own coins. If you have early time, there is a food street near the high-speed rail station. The most famous one is Leshan Bobo Chicken.

The Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area is a national 5A-level tourist attraction, including the Leshan Giant Buddha, Lingyun Mountain, Wuyou Mountain, the giant reclining Buddha and other attractions.

The Leshan Giant Buddha, also known as the Lingyun Buddha, is 71 meters high. It was carved in the Tang Dynasty and was completed by three generations of craftsmen over 90 years. It is the largest cliff-carved statue in China.

This place has always been a Buddhist holy place. Lingyun Temple is very popular. It is a good choice to come here to experience Buddhist culture.

In addition to going up the mountain to observe the Buddha up close, you can also choose to take a boat to view the Buddha from a distance and get a panoramic view.

By boat:

1. Ferry from Leshan Port to the Giant Buddha, fare 1 yuan/person

2. You can take a cruise to see the Leshan Giant Buddha at Leshan Port, 50-70 yuan/person/time, the tour time is about 15 minutes. Since there is no dock, the boat will not dock, so tourists can only enjoy the view of the Leshan Giant Buddha on the boat.

I heard that the Leshan Giant Buddha is the largest Buddha in China. It is really huge. Walking at the foot of the Buddha, I felt that a person was not as tall as the Buddha's toes [grin]

It is very convenient to drive and park at the Big Buddha. You can park in a special parking lot on weekdays. If it is a holiday, you can park at a nearby farmer's house, which is very convenient.

There are two main ways to see the Buddha. One is to buy a ticket at the entrance of the Buddha and go up the mountain and then follow the plank road down to the foot of the Buddha. The other way is to sit on the opposite side of the river and watch. The boat will go to the foot of the Buddha and stay for a short time before leaving. I think the first of these two ways is more interesting. I recommend this method when there are not many people. The second method is shorter, but you can reach the foot of the Buddha in the shortest time and see the Buddha on the boat. I personally think the first way is more comfortable.

I suggest you try to avoid weekends and holidays. I went there three times. The first two times, there were huge crowds of people. It took at least 4 hours from the time I climbed the mountain to the foot of the Buddha. Why did it take so long? It’s because the plank road to see the Buddha is only one person wide. Only one person can go down at a time. Imagine thousands of people and only one person can go down at a time. How does that feel?

Early in the morning, there were neither too many nor too few tourists, most of whom were traveling in groups.



⬇️The remaining ruins are difficult to identify. I like the red rocks of this mountain, which gives people a feeling of entering the Buddha's kingdom.



⬇️This dragon is trapped in the mountain. It is unlucky for a dragon to swim in shallow water. Don’t take photos here.



⬇️The cliffs are full of inscriptions along the way, some are clear, some are weathered, and most are too high or too far away, the words are blocked or covered with moss, so it is difficult to see clearly. Many people skip these stone carvings when they visit the mountain. In fact, these stone carvings are also an important part of the famous mountain. People come here to leave inscriptions because of the name of the mountain, and the mountain is also famous because of the various traces left by people.



⬇️Unfortunately, the Buddha was under repair, and the entire Buddha was covered with iron frames and green nets. The road to the bottom of the Buddha was also closed, so we could only see the Buddha from the mountain, which was a pity. It must be spectacular to look up at the Buddha from the foot of the Buddha, and the rushing river at the foot of the Buddha must be very exciting!



⬇️The Leshan Giant Buddha needs repair all year round, which is also related to the humid and rainy environment here. The maintenance time is basically in the off-season. So although there are many people playing in the peak season, the probability of seeing good scenery is greater and more stable.



⬇️Don't scribble randomly, the scenic spot provides a special place to write your message. It is said that the Buddha, which has experienced many vicissitudes of life, will be covered in a glass box in the future for protection. Isn't that more alienated than the Buddha that was blocked by the Buddha I saw today? I don't know whether it is true or not.



⬇️Another good way to see the Buddha is to take a boat to see it, which gives you a wider view. The Buddha was built here in the hope that it would protect the people living down the mountain from floods. With the construction and operation of the downstream hydropower station, the river water below is no longer ferocious, and the water level can no longer rise.



⬇️Most of the caves on Lingyun Mountain are tombs of ancient people. In ancient times, cliff tomb burials were popular here.

If you have no taboos in this regard, it’s okay to go in and take a look, but there’s nothing worth seeing except a few stone chambers.



⬇️The weather is not very good, it is always foggy. If you continue walking, you can go to Mahao Cliff Tomb and Wuyou Temple, which are after leaving the scenic area, and there is no ticket. The winding path leads to a secluded place. The environment of the back mountain is indeed quiet and suitable for strolling. Few people visit the back mountain, and tour groups do not go there.

The tour guide on the direct bus to the Leshan Giant Buddha scenic area will give a 10-minute explanation, mainly to tell everyone how to visit the Leshan Giant Buddha. There are two routes:



1️⃣One is to go up the mountain to get close to the Buddha (people with good physical strength can choose)



2️⃣The second option is to take a boat to view the Buddha from a distance (a good option for those who are not physically fit).



😭Under normal circumstances, both options allow you to see the full view of the Buddha. However, since October 8 this year, the Nine-Curve Plank Road in the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area has been closed for construction, so tourists cannot go down to the foot of the Buddha and cannot see the full view. So we chose the second option without hesitation, not because I was physically weak, but because I wanted to see the full view of the Buddha. The Buddha under renovation is wrapped quite tightly~



🚾There is no toilet on the boat. It is recommended to go to the toilet before boarding the boat. The boat will not dock on the way, but will stop in front of the Big Buddha for a while for everyone to take pictures.



⛴The cruise takes about half an hour.

There are two ways to play in Leshan:

1️⃣Take a boat to see the whole view of the Buddha. No tickets are required. Just buy a boat ticket.



2️⃣You need to buy a ticket to go up the mountain to get close to the Buddha.



⬇️Arrived at the gate, bought tickets (90+5 yuan insurance = 95 yuan per person, and there are many tour guides there asking you if you want a tour guide, 50 yuan), entered the scenic area at around 9 o'clock, and went up the mountain along the mountain path. The mountain road of the Leshan Giant Buddha is completely child's play. Walk all the way to the top of the mountain and see the head of the Buddha.



⬇️Because there are many tour groups in the scenic area, you can just follow a group and listen to their tour guide's explanation. I personally don't think it's necessary to hire a tour guide. However, most of the tour guides in those scenic spots are part-time students. If you want to have fun, just hire one~



⬇️You can go to the foot of the Buddha along the plank road to take a full-body photo. Then walk up along another plank road. (Don’t go back) After visiting the Buddha, on the way down the mountain, you will pass by Lingyun Hall and other temples and walk all the way back to the entrance of the scenic area.



⏰The entire scenic area tour takes about 2 hours



⬇️We chose the latter. There are many tour guides at the entrance. You can find a tour guide to listen to the explanation. It is really hard to understand such cultural attractions without someone to explain. It is not expensive to hire a tour guide, just a few dozen yuan.



⬇️On the way up the mountain, the tour guide told us that there are two types of Buddha: consecrated and unconsecrated. You should worship the consecrated Buddha, because it is useless to worship the unconsecrated Buddha. The way to distinguish is to see if there is a red dot between the eyebrows of the Buddha. If there is, it is consecrated, and if not, it is not consecrated. I don't know whether it is true or not. Anyway, I am half-believing and half-doubting this statement.



⬇️The tour guide also told us some mythical things, what can be photographed and what can't be photographed. For such things, we can only believe it rather than believe it. There are not only big Buddhas on the mountain, but also many small Buddhas, but they are all severely weathered and damaged.



⬇️The tour guide said that we arrived just in time, and that if we come again next year we won’t be able to see the full body of the Buddha, but only the head, because they will build a pagoda on top to protect it, so only the head will be exposed. I don’t know if this is true or not.



⬇️The process of viewing the Buddha is to go down from the right side of the Buddha to the foot, and then climb up from the left side of the Buddha. The queue to see the Buddha was very long. We were probably the last one in line when we finally saw the Buddha. The Buddha looked sleepy and funny.

The Leshan Giant Buddha is indeed the largest stone-carved Maitreya Buddha statue in China. The Leshan Giant Buddha towers into the clouds, the Buddha's expression is lifelike, and every detail including the toes is carved very perfectly and meticulously.



💰I bought a ticket online for 90 yuan each, but when I got there I found many people buying boat tickets for 70 yuan each.



🚢According to the on-site staff, the cruise ship can provide a better panoramic view of the Giant Buddha, so I chose to buy a boat ticket. The boat ticket supports cash and Alipay and WeChat payment, which is very convenient, but you have to queue up to get on the boat because it is restricted in batches.



⏰We were very lucky to get on the boat after waiting for a while. Each boat can accommodate about 30 people. The whole journey takes half an hour. You can enjoy the river scenery on both sides of the river on the boat. It took about eight minutes for the boat to reach the foot of the Big Buddha. The master will stay at the foot of the Big Buddha for ten minutes to leave time for everyone to take pictures and record videos.

To go to the Big Buddha, you need to distinguish between the ticket office and the north entrance, which are more than 1 kilometer apart.



💰You don't need to buy tickets online in advance, the price is almost the same, but you have to go to the ticket office to pick up the tickets. If there are too many people queuing, it is better to take a taxi directly to the automatic ticket office at the north entrance to buy tickets, so you can walk less. But remember to go before 8:30 in the morning. After that, taxis are prohibited and you can only drive to the ticket office archway.



💕Adult tickets are purchased at the self-service ticket machine outside the north entrance. Both WeChat and Alipay are accepted. Children's tickets are sold at the pavilion next to it. During the peak season, they start at 7:30 in the morning.



💕The mountain at the entrance of Leshan Giant Buddha is covered with bee eyes. In fact, the purple-red sandstone is rough and easily weathered. The wind and sand erosion and water erosion form small holes on the rock. People can't help but try their two-finger Zen skills here to see how many levels they have practiced.



💕The first thing you see when you enter the north gate is the Xisheng Maitreya Cave. The Maitreya Buddha enshrined in the cave was built during the Republic of my country period. The tour guide will tell you that this Maitreya Buddha looks very much like a former leader of our country.



💕Some small Buddha statues on the red mountain rock walls along the way have long been eroded by wind and rain and have been completely unrecognizable. Although I have heard about the magnificence of the Leshan Giant Buddha, I am still shocked to truly feel that the Buddha is a mountain and the mountain is a Buddha. However, my face is much sloppier than before. I don't know when it will be my turn to wash it again.



💕Looking from the bottom up, it is even more majestic and spectacular. Before, the Buddha was not separated by a fence, and tourists could touch the Buddha's toes with their own hands, but later, in order to protect this priceless treasure that has gone through thousands of years of vicissitudes, tourists are no longer allowed to approach, and it is no longer possible to do so at the last minute.



💕Standing at the railing, you can deeply feel the turbulent river water, which is turning around and flowing endlessly at the foot of the Buddha. A few days ago, there were heavy rains in Sichuan, and the river water has reached the highest warning water level. If it still rains today, the Lingyun Plank Road will be closed.



💕If you go down the mountain, remember to go out from the left door of Lingyun Temple, which is a bit hidden.

The exit is at the end of the tree-lined path on the trail, with the sound of birds singing on both sides.

There are three gates in the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area: North Gate (entrance), East Gate (exit), and South Gate (entrance + exit).



💕The bus drop-off point and the gate most tourists enter is the North Gate, but the exits are at the East Gate and South Gate. If you need to take the bus back and don’t want to visit the Mahao Cliff Tomb, it is recommended to exit at the East Gate.



💕Because it is not convenient to take the bus from the South Gate. Plus, if you leave your luggage at the small shop at the North Gate, you still have to go out from the East Gate, walk left for about 200 meters and you will return to the North Gate.



💕To sum up, the route of entering from the north gate and exiting from the east gate is the best.



💕The walls in the scenic area are covered with cliff carvings left over from ancient times, all mottled with the passage of time.



💕It was not yet ten o'clock when we arrived, so there was no need to queue. So if you don't want to suffer the pain of queuing for a long time, it is best to come early and try to arrive at the scenic spot before ten o'clock.



💕The tour groups will gradually reach their peak from 10:30 to the afternoon



💕Everyone must estimate the time well, come early, come as early as possible, otherwise it will be very boring to waste time in meaningless queues, and the anticipation of the trip will be greatly reduced.

【Tips】

When visiting Leshan, it is recommended to go in the morning, go directly to the top of the mountain to see the Big Buddha, then walk the plank road to the foot of the Buddha to see the panoramic view, and then go to the Lingyun Temple. Because there are many people on the plank road, and many people will take pictures while walking, and walk very slowly, it is recommended to go when there are not so many people, otherwise if there are many people, it is estimated that it will take more than 2 hours to finish the walk~

If you just want to check in, you can still go there for 40 yuan for student and senior tickets, but don't go there on holidays, it's crowded! The plank road is very narrow and can only accommodate one person. During holidays, you have to queue for two hours and see the Buddha for 20 minutes. I personally don't recommend it, but the scenery in one place is still very beautiful!

Leshan is located at the confluence of three rivers and is the hometown of Guo Moruo. His name comes from the two rivers, one of which is the Moshui River (i.e. Dadu River) and the other is the Ruoshui River (i.e. Qingyi River).



The foot of the Leshan Giant Buddha is at the confluence of three rivers. The Buddha was built because of the fierce water of the three rivers. It took 90 years from Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty to complete. After the Buddha statue was built, the water of the three rivers stopped causing trouble. Over the long years, the "treasures" on the chest of the Leshan Giant Buddha have been stolen, and the Thousand Buddha Caves have been severely damaged, but it is still solemn and compassionate, protecting the people from the suffering of floods. The tour guide said that this Buddha has no heart, so you don't need to worship it, just take a photo. In my heart, I silently prayed to the Buddha for the safety of my family, and also warned myself: resentment and hatred meet, you can't get what you want, and love and separation, only by letting go, the less desire, the happier you will be. Just like this big Buddha that has lost its "treasures", the "five aggregates" are all empty, and it doesn't matter whether you have a heart or not.

From 11am to 4pm now, our family, with the elderly and children, stood by the Minjiang River. The team had no intention of moving forward. It was not because there were too many people, but because the boats on the river were parked on the river. The dispatch was very chaotic, and there were only a few policemen to maintain order, and no staff to explain! Tianchi is also a cruise to see the scenery. The boats on the entire lake are in order. There are such beautiful scenery here, such terrible management, the gap between 4A and 5A is too big!!!

Check in at the Leshan Giant Buddha. After arriving on the island, just follow the crowd and keep walking forward. You can stop to take photos on the way. It feels quite interesting. At the end, you are right opposite the Leshan Giant Buddha. You don’t need to buy tickets or queue up to see it clearly. There are many farmhouses on this island. You can choose one to sit down and drink tea, play cards, chat, etc. It costs about 10 yuan per cup. This is the most simple way for local people to relax.

I had heard that the Buddha was under repair and the Nine-Curve Plank Road was closed, so only the Buddha's head could be seen. When I was preparing for a self-guided tour, I was struggling over whether to go into the scenic area to climb the mountain to see the Buddha or take a boat tour. The tour guide asked for everyone's opinions, and the group members were tired and said they wanted to take a boat. The boat tour of the Buddha only allowed a few minutes of stay in front of the Buddha, and the entire trip only took half an hour. It is definitely a must-have for those who are short on time or lazy.

After seeing all the natural scenery, you can also see the cultural heritage, Buddhist art and astronomical wonders. Tour time: 3 hours Transportation: Take the Xinnanmen bus, get off at Leshan Tourist Bus Station, then transfer to bus No. 13, and drive 30 minutes to the entrance of Leshan Giant Buddha. When you come to Leshan, you must try the famous Leshan Bobo Chicken. Bobo Chicken tastes a bit like hot pot. It is made by stringing various vegetables together, soaking them in seasonings and eating them directly. Main attractions: Giant Buddha, Nine-Curved Plank Road, and Cliff Carvings.

The Maitreya Buddha is as tall as Lingyun Mountain. The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain. Sitting in the Three Rivers, the raging waters of the Three Rivers calm down and no longer swallow up passing ships.

The Leshan Giant Buddha, carved out of loose and easily weathered red sandstone, has an ingeniously designed drainage and ventilation system that effectively reduces the direct erosion of rain on the Buddha. After more than a thousand years of wind and rain, it still retains the graceful style of the prosperous Tang Dynasty.

The river flows east, and Buddhism comes west. The Lingyun Mountain behind the Buddha is Lingyun Temple, which was built before the Buddha. Passing through the Alsophila ditch, you will find the Lingyun plank road hidden between the cliffs of Qiyuan and Duiyue peaks on the left side of the Buddha. It cuts through the wall and holes, and builds a virtual space. It goes straight to the foot of the Buddha. On the stone wall on the right side of the Buddha, there is a steep plank road that was dug at the same time as the construction of the Buddha statue. It twists and turns back and forth, connecting the mountain where the Buddha's head is located and the Jiuqu plank road at the foot of the Buddha. Observe the world, think about the extraordinary, the end is ahead, hope is around the corner, walk out of the end in the corner closest to the "Buddha" on the Jiuqu plank road, and find hope.

My second one-day trip to Leshan Giant Buddha was an attraction I had wanted to visit before I came to Chengdu. The pick-up vehicle for the one-day tour still picked us up from the hotel very early in the morning. I chose a boat tour to view the Buddha because I thought it would be a relaxing trip and not tiring. Although the time is less than climbing a mountain, you can have a panoramic view of the Buddha, which is also unique. The cruise ship will stop in front of the Buddha for a few minutes for everyone to take photos. The view of the Buddha is quite spectacular and worth a visit.

In the entire Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area, the only thing worth seeing is this Buddha. But for this Buddha, I am still willing to come all the way here, because since I was a child, I have seen the Leshan Giant Buddha on TV, and I have always longed to see this miracle with my own eyes.

You can walk along the plank road to the Buddha's foot platform, and then climb up the plank road from the right side of the Buddha.

The plank road going down is slightly flatter, but you can't see the Buddha; the plank road going up is not far to the right of the Buddha, and you can always see the Buddha while climbing, but because the steps are relatively steep, it is not recommended for the elderly and children to climb.

The best angle to take a photo with the Leshan Giant Buddha is on the upper platform, near the exit, where there is a viewing platform. Let the photographer stand higher and the tourists stand in the corner of the platform, and the photo will look good.

There are two ways to visit the Leshan Giant Buddha, one is by boat, the other is by climbing the plank road. I personally recommend the latter because the journey is not very long and it is more complete to walk.

The Leshan Giant Buddha was built on the mountain. It was carved in the first year of the Kaiyuan Period of the Tang Dynasty and completed in the 19th year of the Zhenyuan Period, which took about 90 years. The construction of the Buddha was only 20 years after the Wu Zetian era, so when Haitong built the Leshan Giant Buddha, it chose Maitreya Buddha. Maitreya Buddha is the future Buddha who can bring light and happiness, which is consistent with the requirements of the Zhenjiang Buddha who calms floods. Local people believe that this giant Buddha is still blessing the people from all directions.

The river flows east, and Buddhism comes west!

The ticket price is 80 yuan. Go up the mountain to the head of the Buddha (Lingyun Temple), go down the plank road on the left side of the Buddha to the Buddha's feet, and go back to the Buddha's head from the right side. It takes about 2 hours.

Another way is to take a cruise on the river to see the panoramic view of the Buddha, which takes less time and costs 70 yuan.

The Leshan Giant Buddha, also known as the Lingyun Giant Buddha, is located on the east bank of the Minjiang River in southern Leshan City, Sichuan Province, next to the Lingyun Temple, near the confluence of the Dadu River, Qingyi River and Minjiang River. It is said that touching the ears of the Giant Buddha will bring good luck, and you can just pray for the health of your family and friends. It only takes about ten minutes to go down the mountain, from another gate (I forgot which gate). Generally speaking, it is still worth a visit.

As a Sichuanese, I still feel unwilling to visit Leshan Giant Buddha. So I went on a spontaneous trip. The toll from Chengdu to Leshan is 38. The ticket is 82. It is very lively. The locals believe in Buddhism. I heard that the Buddha has not washed his feet for more than a thousand years since it was built. There are many temples on the mountain. Friends who believe in Buddhism, it is worth a visit. Go straight for 10 minutes from the ticket gate, you can take a cruise and cruise the three rivers at night. But I feel that the water quality is not very good, so I didn't go. Friends who drive themselves should pay attention. The ticket gate is a one-way street.
