Karola Glacier

Passing through Naijingangsang, one of the four major snow-capped mountains in Tibet. Like a beautiful woman quietly dressing up, Karola looks out from the mountains. It is reported that the Karola Glacier is the closest to the highway in Tibet, which is only about 300 meters away from the highway. Karola Glacier is located at the junction of Langkazi County and Gyantse County, about 71 kilometers away from Gyantse County. After coming out of Yamdrok Lake, crossing the Smil Pass at about 4,330 meters, you will arrive at the ice tongue of Karola Glacier. The front of the ice tongue is about 5,560 meters above sea level, and the place where you can watch the Karola Glacier is about 5,400 meters above sea level. The area about 5,600 meters north of the pass is a hanging glacier formed after the Ningjinkangsha Peak Glacier drifted southward. Naijingangsang is the main peak of Laguigangri Mountain, north of the Himalayas. Legend has it that it is the place where the four major mountain gods of Tibetan Buddhism, the Western Mountain God Nuoji Kangwa Sangbu, live. There are more than 10 peaks over 6,000 meters around Naijingangsang, which is one of the four major snow-capped mountains in Tibet.

The Karola Glacier is the closest to the highway in Tibet. The huge glacier stretches from the top of the mountain to the roadside, which is only a few hundred meters away from the highway. The crystal blue brings a cool feeling. Although the glacier is in black and white due to the dust on the road for many years, the upper part of the glacier is like a giant thangka hanging on the mountain wall, shining brightly under the sunlight.

It is truly magnificent. I am at a loss for words and can only repeat over and over again, "It's awesome". The altitude at the foot of the mountain is 5020 meters, and the altitude at the top of the mountain is 7191 meters, catching up with the altitude of Mount Namjagbarwa in Nyingchi. Unfortunately, a lot of it was blown up when we were filming the Red River Valley, so what we came to appreciate was not the most stunning appearance of the Kalaruo Glacier.

I couldn't let go of the pictures I took once I got there. Looking at the ravines, I thought that people who walked up must have become pixelated dregs.

Canora Glacier, there is a gate on the road, they stopped the car and asked for tickets, 50 per car, we said we didn't want to see it, we were just passing by, the toll collector also laughed, anyway, he wanted money, we had no choice but to give 50 toll. There is a parking lot after that, free parking with tickets, so we got off the car and took a look, it was really shocking.

By Ethan |

We slowly climbed up the mountain along the unfinished dirt road that was rolled out by predecessors. The slope was steep, and the underpowered car could only climb the slope at a low speed in manual gear. We parked the car on a flat ground halfway up the mountain, and had to continue climbing after getting off to get a closer look. The app showed that the altitude was 5,120 meters, and we felt a little short of breath after getting off the car, lacking oxygen, and could not do strenuous exercise. We put on enough clothes and slowly climbed up along the unrepaired plank road, stopping every three steps to challenge the limit of altitude.

It took about half an hour to cover the short distance, and fortunately we successfully reached the closest place to the glacier that could be reached on foot. There was a prominent warning on the hillside: "Avalanche is occurring, no going forward."

The sun was shining brightly, shining the valley without reservation. There was no plank road further up, and in the distance were Nima piles and prayer flags built by people. I walked slowly to the farthest point with small steps, and saw that the altitude was 5215 meters. Looking down at the whole canyon from a high place, the clouds covered the glacier, and it was clearly visible in the distance. The mountains were magnificent, and the cold wind condensed the light cloud water on the top with refrigerant, and the trickle flowed through the strong rocks one after another, endlessly; the fatigue curled up in the body after climbing 5200 meters was ironed out by the gorgeous sunshine.

The official entrance to the scenic area is at an inner bend on the west side. From here, you have to climb more stairs.

By Love you forever |

Looking up from the foot of the mountain, the top of the mountain is covered with so much fog that it almost occupies half of the entire mountain. Only a small part of the glacier can be seen. Before I came here, I always thought that this scenic spot should be quite large, but I didn't expect that a tower, an observation deck, and a long plank road are all here.

Now, this place has become the only way to Gyantse and Shigatse. With the heavy traffic, the ice tongue has been slowly pushed back, and the snow line has been getting higher and higher, and has retreated to one-third of the entire mountain. I wonder if such a white and solemn place will completely disappear after many years. If the ice and snow gradually melt away, it will be a pity.

These natural landscapes have been formed through thousands of years of natural forging and the integration of human civilization. It took 1,000 years for the 200-meter-deep ice to form. Humans should not be a burden to the scenery. I prayed silently in my heart, hoping that it would melt slower and slower.

The car went around Yamdrok Lake and passed by the Karola Glacier, which was once the location for the movie "Red River Valley". The glacier right next to the road was breathtaking. The primitive and rugged here is completely different from the green trees and lakes of the Midui Glacier. The flawless white glacier is spread on the top of the mountain without any cover, and its shape is like a thangka, and it looks more like an eagle spreading its wings; there is no grass at the foot of the mountain, and the gravel has become soil. I heard that the glacier used to extend to the side of the road, but it has been shrinking under global warming, reminding us to always protect the environment. Nowadays, there is a fee for the viewing area, but in fact, it feels that the only difference in buying a ticket is that you can take a photo next to the stone with the name of the scenic spot written by hand.

By xiaoxiao |

The Karola Glacier is right beside the road. The glacier has melted to the middle of the mountain. Because a director blew up a part of the glacier when filming Red River Valley, the glacier is getting smaller and smaller now. Due to global warming, the glacier may disappear soon in a few years. The Karola Glacier is also more than 5,000 meters above sea level. I felt a headache after walking a few dozen meters, so I didn't walk to the end of the glacier.

Here, there are several stone tablets where you can take photos. A Tibetan will come over and hold your hand to take a photo. Out of a friendly attitude, we did not let her leave. She asked us for 10 yuan afterwards. Be sure to pay attention when you go there~ If you meet Tibetans in the scenic area, be sure to stay away from them.

In addition to Yanghu Lake, there was another attraction for the day, Karola Glacier. It was almost evening when we approached, but fortunately we arrived here before the sun set. Coming out of the Lujila Observation Deck, we walked along the south bank of Yanghu Lake in Langkazi County to Shigatse. On the way, after crossing the 4,330-meter Smil Pass, we came to the ice tongue of Karola Glacier, which is 5,040 meters above sea level. We didn't feel uncomfortable when we came down to check in. After getting on the bus, I told my companions that we seemed to have gradually begun to adapt to the altitude of 5,000 meters.

By Jiao Youyou |

Since the Kanora Glacier is right on the roadside, local Tibetans will stop cars and charge a fee. The ticket price of 50 yuan is not cost-effective. Our car decisively told the staff that we were going directly to Shigatse and did not plan to visit the glacier up close. So we just took a picture in the car and were satisfied with looking at the snow-capped mountains from a distance, saving 50 yuan per person.

By Skystream |

Karola Glacier is probably the closest glacier to the highway in China. It is also the only way from Yanghu Lake to Gyangze, so you won't want to miss it. If you have time, you can buy a ticket and hike up to the viewing pavilion on the ridge to see the beauty of the glacier from a closer distance.

By Kay |

To be honest, there is nothing to see. If you are passing by on the way to Mount Everest or Shigatse, you can stop and take a look; if you are going to Yanghu Lake from Lhasa, there is really no need to go to Karola. It is better to save time to go to Yanghu Rito Temple. The glaciers in Hailuogou are much more shocking than this Karola.

By Caterpillar & Acne Dragon |

On the way to Gyangze, you will inevitably pass the Karola Glacier. The surging snow-capped mountains turned into water and solidified forever on the southern slope of the Naijingangsang Snow Mountain. You can watch the passage of time and observe the vicissitudes of life.

By Long-faced Zhang Shaoxia |

The Karola Glacier is located on the southern slope of Naiqin Kangsang Peak (7,191 meters), one of the four highest peaks in Tibet. The upper part of the glacier is a gently sloping ice cap, and the lower part is two ice tongues in the form of hanging glaciers. The eastern ice tongue is 3 kilometers long and 750 meters wide.

By Amy-Fish |

We got off the stop and continued along the road beside Yanghu Lake, enjoying the picturesque scenery. After crossing the 4,330-meter Smila Pass, we arrived at the tongue of the Karola Glacier. We originally wanted to take a detour to the back of the glacier to explore what was going on, but halfway through, we encountered road repairs and could not pass, so we had to return the same way.

By Mickey's Dad |

The Karola Glacier is located at the boundary between Shannan and Shigatse, about 5,000 meters above sea level. It is said that the glacier has retreated a lot compared to before. From Lhasa, go to Yanghu Lake, then to the Karola Glacier, and then to Gyantse and Shigatse. The journey is long but the scenery is beautiful.

By Zhuoma Xiyou |

Karola Glacier, one of the three largest glaciers in Tibet, is also one of the four sacred mountains in Tibet. It is 5,020 meters above sea level, and the peak of Naiqin Kangsang Peak is 7,191 meters. The upper part of the glacier is an ice cap with a gentle slope, and the lower part is two ice tongues in the form of hanging glaciers. The east ice tongue is 3 kilometers long, 750 meters wide, and the end of the ice tongue is 5,233 meters high; the west ice tongue is 4.5 kilometers long, 1.5 kilometers wide, and the end of the ice tongue is 5,145 meters high. The entire glacier covers an area of 9.4 square kilometers. The glaciers and avalanches in the movie "Red River Valley" were all filmed here, and it is known as a natural film and television base.

Beauty: You may have only seen the magnificent and rare ice towers, ice mushrooms, ice bridges, as well as the ice cliffs thousands of feet high and the dangerous dark ice cracks on TV and in magazines. The whiteness of the Karola Glacier not only symbolizes purity, but also permanence. As the saying goes, the meaning of life is not only living, but also poetry and distance. The Karola Glacier is poetry and distance...

Limit: When you come here, you will feel the real power of the plateau. Lack of oxygen will not only slow down your steps, speed up your heartbeat, and swell your head, but will also rapidly increase your sense of heaviness from body to heart, as if all the heaviness of this life has accumulated under the Karola Glacier at this moment. Perhaps, you think that when you arrive at the "Red River Valley", you must hum a few tender songs such as "People say you are leaving the village, we will miss your smile", but it is not possible. You really have no strength, and you are left with infinite awe.

Coming out of Yanghu Lake, heading towards Gyangze, you will find the Karola Glacier, which is about 5,400 meters above sea level. The wind is strong and cold. I covered myself with everything I could wear, but I was still freezing.

However, due to the intensification of the global greenhouse effect, the snow line of the Karola Glacier moves up a certain distance every year. Maybe it will disappear completely in a few years.

It is quite spectacular, with huge and steep slopes carrying glaciers formed thousands of years ago. Karula is melting, and perhaps in a few years we will never see such a spectacular sight again.

It just snowed here, and then the sky was clear. The sunlight reflected back through the snow on the surface, which was extremely dazzling~~

By When Go |

The Karola Glacier is a very magical place on the roadside. There is no reason not to pass by it. The sun sets and the snow-capped mountains are shining with golden light. It is beautiful.

On the way from Langkazi Line to Gyangze, you will pass by this scenic spot. The ancient glacier became famous because of the Red River Valley.

By the time we got here, dusk had already fallen, and the setting sun was gradually shedding a golden glow. The hilltops, where dusk was approaching, showed a clear difference in cool and warm colors and temperatures.

When we focused our eyes on the top of the mountain again, the magnificent scenery of "Sunlight on the Golden Mountain" appeared. Although it was sunset, if you don't take it seriously, it might give you a gorgeous visual experience like sunrise. The wind at the mountain pass was strong and cold on my face. The snow on the mountain was shining with a little bit of light, leaving behind a long shadow and beautiful memories. I like the splendor and splendor of that moment~

I turned a corner and it suddenly appeared, just under his feet. I didn't notice it at first, but when I came to my senses, I realized that it was really majestic, very spectacular, really very spectacular. The camera really couldn't express it. I looked at it for a while and suddenly I felt scared. Human beings are really so small.

We opened the car door and felt a chill. After getting off the car, you need to look up, as if a glacier is about to rush down. From the bottom of my heart, this Karola Glacier shocked me more than Mount Everest. You only look at Mount Everest from a distance and it doesn't seem as spectacular as you imagined, but this glacier is right in front of you, just like the people on the Titanic who saw a gray area at a cabin door and saw nothing until they looked up and realized that it was an iceberg several hundred meters high.

By Sheep don't eat grass |

When I first heard the name, I thought it was something particularly spectacular and magical, like the scene in the fairy tale world of Frozen. Maybe the greater the hope, the greater the disappointment. We took a quick glance at the foot of the mountain and didn't feel it was anything special, so we got in the car and left. After all, it was windy and cold, and we couldn't climb to the top.

It is 5,000 meters above sea level and has a famous 40-degree glacier. Unfortunately, it is not open this year because it is so beautiful. Many people come here to admire it. One person got lost inside, so it will not be open this year.

As a result, the security guards of the scenic area were very fierce and said that we were not allowed to stop and take pictures without buying tickets! So domineering, I was on National Highway 318, and the scenic area’s guards were also on the national highway? I didn’t argue with them, I drove slower, and my wife rolled down the window to take pictures.

Karola Glacier is the closest glacier to the highway and can be easily viewed. As the saying goes, “If a place is close, it attracts many visitors.” Karola Glacier has become a popular check-in spot this year.

It was dusk when we arrived at Karola Glacier. The huge glacier was half silver and half golden, like a golden mountain in the sun! If we hadn't wasted half a day in the morning, we wouldn't have seen such a view.

By Peggy |

You have to walk slowly here. The wind is blowing and it's cold, and you have to be careful of homeless people who come to take photos without permission. They charge 10 yuan and they come uninvited, so you can't drive them away.

By Lunar_Astra |

It is not very big, just within the field of vision in the picture. There is a Tibetan family at the foot of the mountain. It seems like we are from two different worlds, a group of modern people are watching a Tibetan family living a primitive life. Although when passing by them, we would say a not-so-standard Mandarin, "Ten yuan for taking a photo, ten yuan."

The Karola Glacier is 5,000 meters above sea level, and I felt a slight sense of altitude sickness. People who are not suitable for traveling to the plateau, those with obvious lesions in the heart, lungs, brain, liver, and kidneys, and those with severe anemia or hypertension should carefully consider going to Tibet. Everyone will feel different degrees of shortness of breath, chest tightness, dyspnea and other hypoxia symptoms, especially to avoid colds, so be sure to keep warm.

When I was at the Karola Glacier, the wind blew my hat away, so I jogged for 2 or 3 steps. I felt short of breath at first, and then my heart rate increased rapidly. I felt dizzy and I almost didn't have the strength to walk back to the car, even though it was only a distance of 20 meters. After returning to the car, I tried to adjust my breathing. If you have altitude sickness, you must keep calm, breathe evenly, and empty your mind from thinking about complicated things to avoid consuming oxygen in your brain.

By Xin's direction |

The stones with words were put there manually later, and taking photos is also charged. At first I didn't know, and the Tibetans didn't see it, so I took a few photos for free.

The Karola Glacier looked even more spectacular against the backdrop of the azure sky, and at one point I even thought that everything before my eyes was not real.

By Sarah |

The undulating bedrock hills at the front edge of the glacier cause cracks on the top of the slowly moving ice layer at the front edge of the glacier tongue. The ice and snow melt along the cracks, forming a magnificent forest of seracs. On the seracs, the alternation of snow and dust shows various strange cloud-like folds, like patterns carefully carved by skilled craftsmen.

The huge glacier extends from the top of the mountain to the roadside only a few hundred meters away from the highway. The crystal blue brings a cool feeling. Although the glacier is in black and white due to the dust on the road for many years, the upper part of the glacier is like a giant thangka hanging on the mountain wall, shining brightly under the sunlight.

Karola Glacier is one of the three largest glaciers in Tibet and is also the glacier filming location for the movie "Red River Valley".

The glacier is extremely shocking to feel up close. The glacier stretches over several hills. The glacier water forms a thin waterfall between the dark rocks. Because the U-shaped valley rises, the sound of water and wind merge into one. The last sound you hear is actually like the sound of an airplane flying high in the sky. That ethereal sound is a magical white noise that makes it easy to empty your mind and is very psychedelic. The glacier water at the foot of the mountain gathers into a stream, nourishing a green meadow. Several small stone houses are scattered among them, echoing the glacier, like a small Switzerland in the East.

The Karola Scenic Area is a paid scenic area because the glacier is on the side of the provincial road. So if you just want to feast your eyes and take some photos, you can do so in the car. But if you stop in the scenic area to take photos, you will be asked to pay for the ticket.

By Panda Star |

The place where the Red River Valley was filmed had an ice tongue that extended all the way to the current highway location. In recent years, with climate warming, the construction of asphalt roads, and the arrival of a large number of tourists, the ice tongue has been shrinking. Now we can only find the glorious days of Carolina in the films of that year.

By RexRen |

By Miss Lan |

Yanghu Lake is very long. If you drive along the lake, you will reach the Karola Glacier. The altitude here is about 5,000 meters, and the peak is 7,191 meters above sea level. The glacier has melted a lot in recent years, and only a small amount of glacier remains on the top.

The glacier closest to the road, the lower viewing platform is only 300 meters away from the main road, and the upper viewing platform requires a 1-kilometer climb, 5,200 meters, with oxygen tanks. When you climb to the top, you are only a few hundred meters away from the glacier, which is very shocking.

By g0 |

The highest point of the glacier is 5233 meters above sea level, and the parking lot at the foot of the mountain is about 5002 meters above sea level. There is a wooden plank road that zigzags along the hillside to the glacier so that visitors can see it up close. In the past, the Canora Glacier extended to the side of the road, but now it has retreated several hundred meters. Perhaps one day, as the greenhouse effect intensifies, the Canora Glacier may disappear forever.

The slope was very steep, and the wooden plank road was only partially accessible. At an altitude of 5,000+, we had to breathe deeply like swimming to inhale more oxygen with every step we took, and we had to stop and rest every two or three steps. The young men who were traveling with us also praised us, because they also had to try their best to climb.

Two little girls (I later learned they were sisters) came over to help me carry the tripod when they saw me struggling to climb the mountain at my age. I was really embarrassed to do so because climbing is very hard for everyone regardless of age. The two sisters insisted on taking over the tripod and helped me carry it most of the way up the mountain. I am very grateful for their sincerity and their willingness to lend a helping hand to others even though they were struggling themselves. It was very touching!

Karola Glacier is more like a viewing platform, where you can see the ice and snow on the mountain from a close distance. But I want to remind you that there are many Tibetans selling goods here, such as stones, beeswax, milk residue, etc. There are also girls in Tibetan clothes who want to take pictures for you. It costs 10 yuan to take a picture of one person. If she carries a child on her back, she will ask you for 20 yuan... If you don't pay, you may not be able to leave.

It is very spectacular. The movies "Red River Valley", "Battle of Gyantse" and "The Clouds and Water Ballad" were all shot here.

On the way from Karola Glacier to Gyangze County, where Yamdrok Lake is located, you can see the outline of the glacier on the roadside. But even if you stop by the roadside to take pictures and do not enter the scenic area, you will encounter local people in security uniforms who will charge you. If you encounter someone asking you for money, just act accordingly. They dare not do anything to passing tourists. You cannot look at the glacier for too long. If you look at it for too long, you will feel a little dizzy. It should be the legendary color blindness.

Not far from Yanghu Lake is the Karola Glacier, the filming location of the movie "Red River Valley". The scenic spot is right on the roadside! There are many glaciers and snow-capped mountains along the Ali Ring Road, but this should be the closest to the road. The long wooden plank road behind you leads directly to the foot of the mountain. From a distance, it seems to be connected to the melting ice gully!

The Karola Glacier is famous because of the Red River Valley. The glaciers that were blown up for the filming of the movie have not yet recovered. And the driver of our chartered car said that the Karola Glacier is disappearing faster than he thought. He passes by here two or three times a year. He has been in Tibet for so long, and the area of the glacier has been decreasing year by year.

Not far from the signpost of Naiqin Kangsang Snow Mountain, you will arrive at the Karola Glacier Scenic Area. It is the iceberg that Feng Xiaogang blew up when filming the movie Red River Valley! It is very shocking to see it up close. With global warming, the glaciers are melting faster. When you walk in, you can see many waterfalls formed by glacier meltwater flowing down! Across the glacier is the white snow mountain!

Although the scenery here is beautiful, the Tibetans' behavior made us feel embarrassed. As soon as we parked the car, several people would come around to ask for food and drinks. We gave them half a dozen Red Bulls and some chocolate candies, but they continued to ask for money and even my down jacket... I saw her carrying a child on her back and giving the child chocolate, but the mother stuffed the chocolate into her own mouth and threw the candy wrapper on the ground! ! Alas! There is really no cure for poverty~ Their behavior is definitely bringing shame to this snowy pure land!

This is the filming location of the TV series Red River Valley. The entire glacier is very spectacular. The glacier is constantly melting. The trend of global warming has caused the glacier to become smaller and smaller. The melted water has formed a large river at the foot of the mountain.

I had seen the glacier on the way before entering the Karola Glacier and was shocked by its texture, so I took a lot of beautiful pictures. But when I really arrived at the viewing point of the Karola Glacier, I lost the desire to take pictures.

I thought it was a glacier, but it was just a snowy mountain with a pointed top. At that time, local women holding children would ask you for food or buy something from them. If you gave something to one person, a group of them would come around and ask for more.

Known as the sleeping ice beauty (crystal blue, majestic, misty, peerless beauty), it is not only a geological history written by flowing years and ice and snow, but also a great work of art sculpted by time. Due to the high altitude, I had a slight headache, and other companions had headaches and shortness of breath to varying degrees. After all, it was 5,000 meters above sea level. At that time, I felt that high altitudes still needed to be taken seriously, and oxygen was so important.

The upper part of the glacier is a gently sloping ice cap, and the lower part is two ice tongues in the form of hanging glaciers.

My favorite is actually this glacier. The huge glacier extends from the misty top of the mountain to the roadside only a few hundred meters away from the highway. The higher you climb, the closer you get to it. The air becomes thinner and the clouds move lower, as if they are within reach. It is so spectacular.

From a distance, the glacier looks like endless white snow, but when you look closer you will find that it is tall and hard, with edges as sharp as knives.

We saw a beautiful snow scene. In fact, due to the filming of the movie "Red River Valley" and environmental reasons, the Karola Glacier is no longer intact, and it is really not as beautiful as the icebergs in the distance that we saw on the road.

The unknown glacier in the distance is spectacular, but you can't get close to it.

The glacier closest to the Tibet Highway feels so close yet so far away.

The ticket price for Karola Glacier is 60 yuan. Generally, you will be asked to buy a ticket when you see the staff when the tour bus stops. Because it is summer, Karola Glacier is not as beautiful as other online promotional pictures.

We were a little tired of the mountains and valleys along the way, and suddenly we found a large glacier, which was a surprise. The wind was very cold, and I caught a cold again. For the beautiful scenery, I think it's worth it! By the way... Karola Glacier is on the side of the road. When you get off the car to take pictures, someone will come to collect the entrance fee. It seems to be 60 or 81 people. We felt it was too cold, so we took some photos in the car. When the collector came, we left. This way, we can appreciate the beauty of the glacier and save some money.

The driver took us to the entrance of Karola Glacier and hung up prayer flags. He asked us to write the names of the people we wanted to bless on the prayer flags.

According to local customs, we hung our blessings in the windward direction, wishing everything goes well and be healthy. It is said that every time the wind blows and the prayer flags flutter, it is like reciting a sutra to bring good luck to the blessed person.

Nature is so magical. Even in summer, the snow on the glacier is still motionless and maintains its pride and indifference. In the photo, it looks like a plaster statue.

The Karola Glacier in Tibet is the closest glacier to the highway, only about 300 meters away. The Karola Glacier is located at the junction of Langkazi County and Gyantse County. You can see the Naiqin Kangsang Snow Mountain when you leave Langkazi County, and the Karola Glacier is not far away. If you stop the car at the top of the mountain, local Tibetans will come up to sell tickets. We did not stop at the top of the mountain, but stopped the car after turning around the top of the mountain, so we can see the glacier up close.

Roadside scenery, you must buy a ticket if you pass by, it is also good to be able to see the glacier so close

The original glacier was much larger than it is now, but due to global warming, a lot of it has melted. It is also said that when filming the movie Red River Valley, some glaciers were blown up for the avalanche scene.

Fortunately, we can now use high technology to simulate bombing scenes, otherwise the White House would have to be rebuilt countless times.

The entire scenic area is not very big, with a platform and a plank road. If you want, you can climb over the plank road and walk to the front of the glacier to experience its magnificence up close.

We have reached the mountainside or even the top of the mountain. We may not be able to see it again in a few years, so we just wandered around. Perhaps because we were too close to the road, the glaciers along the roadside appeared grayish white instead of snowy white.

The scenery is nice! But there are many Tibetans who want to take pictures with you and charge you
