Potala Palace

The highest and most majestic palace in the world is the most important symbol of Lhasa and even Tibet.
"Potala" is a Sanskrit word, also translated as "Putuo", which originally refers to the residence of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The Potala Palace is also a holy place in the hearts of all pilgrims.
It is mainly composed of the Red Palace and the White Palace. The highest Red Palace in the middle is an important place for religious ceremonies, and the surrounding White Palace is mainly the venue for the Dalai Lama's activities.
The museum houses pagodas, statues, murals, thangkas, and scriptures. The most eye-catching of these are the eight stupas of the five Dalai Lamas.
The locations for photographing the Potala Palace include the Yaowang Mountain Observation Deck on the southwest side of the Potala Palace, the artificial lakeside of Zongjiaolukhang Park, and the Potala Palace Square.

Things to note when visiting the Potala Palace

1. Potala Palace reservation mechanism: Now you can only visit through travel agencies, and if you book a ticket for the next day, the time of the visit is random, and you will not know the time until 5 pm! If you are on a flight the next day, you must consider it carefully. If the appointment is at 4 or 5 pm and your flight is also in the afternoon, this ticket will be invalid.

2. When visiting the Potala Palace, you must listen to the tour guide. There are many things to pay attention to!

3. When you are waiting in line, someone will change coins for you to donate, but they don't do it for free. They will give you 20% off. If you give 50, you can only get 40. So if you want to donate, you can prepare some coins to avoid being cheated.

4. Regarding bringing water, you are not allowed to bring bottled mineral water and drinks into the Potala Palace, but you are allowed to bring your own empty water cup. Otherwise, you can only buy special water for the Potala Palace! 5 yuan, it's quite reasonable

Red bricks and white walls ------ this is the Potala Palace. Located on the roof of the world, with snow-capped mountains and blue sky as the background, its heaviness proves its solemnity, its red and white show its purity, and its towering into the sky shows its sacredness. When I walked towards it, I seemed to understand the love story of Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng; I seemed to understand why it can become a dream place for contemporary people, why it is a symbol of holiness, purity and the cohesion of faith.

I read on the Internet that the number of tourists in the Potala Palace is controlled every day, and reservations must be made the day before so that tickets can be purchased and visited normally the next day. I failed to make a reservation yesterday due to time constraints, so I queued up to buy tickets early this morning with a try-it attitude. There were quite a few people in front of me, and the large group behind me even scared us. The early bird catches the worm, haha~ Finally, I successfully entered the Potala Palace. As a landmark building in Lhasa, the Potala Palace is still worth a visit!

So how can you take good-looking photos of the Potala Palace?

(1) Potala Palace Square

How to encounter a small pond in a good location that has not yet dried up in the sunny Potala Palace Square, and then take pictures of the beautiful reflection of the Potala Palace, has always been a big problem that bothered the author during the preparation period of this trip. Not to mention being anxious and anxious, at least a few hairs fell off. Until I received the selfless parting words from Brother Shanying, "Buy a bottle of water and pour it yourself." Happiness always comes so suddenly, and the truth is so simple that it makes me cry.

Of course, in addition to pouring water, the Potala Palace Square itself is the best location for taking photos of the Potala Palace.

At any time, there are many photographers climbing, standing or flying in the square. So please feel free to pose as the local residents have long been numb and have no intention of marveling at the sight.

(2) Yaowang Mountain (50 yuan)

Standing on the Potala Palace Square, there is a small hill on the left side facing the Potala Palace, called Yaowang Hill. There is a special viewing platform on it for taking the same photo as on the back of the 50-yuan RMB note.

Believe me, this is definitely the most crowded tourist spot in Lhasa. From Tibetan costume photos, wedding photos, to tourists checking in photos, from day to night, countless sturdy photographers direct the "models" to grab the few angles.

We climbed the Yaowang Mountain Observation Deck twice and stayed there for a total of one hour, and only took a few photos with less "intrusions".

(3) Park beside the Potala Palace Square

Opposite Yaowang Mountain, on the other side of the Potala Palace, there is a small park with a small pond. It is also a good place to photograph the reflection of the Potala Palace in the water, especially in the early morning and evening, when cameras and long guns are densely packed around the pond.

However, this is not a good place to take portraits.

(4) Nanshan Park

This shooting spot was recommended by Brother Shanying. Lhasa Nanshan Park is located outside Lhasa. The author took a taxi there. It is an artificial park built on a barren mountain. Construction began in 2012 and opened in 2016. The artificial lake in the park is the best place to take pictures of the Potala Palace and the majestic mountains behind it from a distance. Especially after the snow in winter, the white ice and snow cover the mountain, and the red and white Potala Palace is particularly beautiful against the pure white background.

(5) City hotels

Although there are no so-called "high-rise buildings" in Lhasa, some hotels or folk customs will open their top floors. Standing on these "roofs", you can take pictures of the Potala Palace and the buildings in Lhasa at the same time. Interested friends can pay more attention when booking a hotel, as hotels usually use the roof as a selling point.

The place where political power and secular power intersect and compete with each other seems solemn, but in fact it is never peaceful. The military songs are full of murderousness and ostentation, which seem to suppress the sound of morning bells and evening drums and chanting scriptures, which seems a bit inconsistent. Only the sun rises and sets day after day, not caring whether it illuminates the golden roof of the Potala Palace or a dilapidated wooden house.

The Potala Palace is the symbol of Tibet. In Lhasa, a place of universal faith, the prayer wheels of the Potala Palace are supreme.

Turn the golden prayer wheels one by one, touch them gently with your hands, slow down your steps, and calm your mind.

Meditate on something in your heart and find the taste and feeling of Tibet.

It is forbidden to take photos inside the Potala Palace, so to protect the cultural relics and respect the faith, mobile phones and cameras should be put away. If you want to take souvenirs, just leave them outside.

By Hiko |

When you go to Tibet, the Potala Palace is a must-visit classic place. You need to make an appointment in advance. The overall color matching of the exterior is very beautiful. There are many Buddha statues enshrined inside, and locals often turn the prayer wheel inside or outside. Pay attention to your dress when entering, and there is a relatively strict security check. I heard from the tour guide that the mountain of the Potala Palace has sunk a little, and I don’t know if it will be possible to go up in a few years. If you want to go, hurry up. In addition, if you want to take pictures, it is recommended to go to the Potala Palace Square opposite, where you can take panoramic photos. You don’t need to make an appointment, but you need to go through security. Going at different times will change the color of the sky, and the photos will feel slightly different.

Speaking of the Potala Palace, tickets are really hard to get! Almost impossible! So I booked a small group on China-TravelNote. The disadvantage of going alone is that you can only rely on selfies. The Potala Palace looks so "new". The tour guide said that it was because the exterior walls had been repainted not long ago. In fact, it is not appropriate to use paint, because unlike the general exterior wall painting, the painting of the Potala Palace is actually "splashed". The paint made of pure natural raw materials is poured from a high place. It is not easy to see from a distance, but after going up and looking at the ground, you will know that it is really not painted. In addition to selfies, another way is to go to social, hahaha, and ask the Gelugpa sister to help me take pictures. The tour guide said that you can take pictures here. I didn't want to take pictures at first, but then I thought, I don't know if I will come again next time, and it is better to leave a photo than not to have less regrets. Looking at this staircase, I am really glad that I made an appointment today instead of the day I arrived, otherwise I would have a headache climbing this broken place with altitude sickness! After arriving at the wordless monument, you have to exchange for a formal ticket, and then you can really enter the Potala Palace. From this window, you can see that the exterior wall was really renovated by "splashing". All the materials used are natural mineral powder, and the people who come to paint the wall are all devout believers. Those who can contribute will contribute, and those who are not in Lhasa will do their best to buy the required materials and send them here. They are so selfless in guarding their beliefs. Speaking of this large area of white exterior wall, how many trucks of milk are needed~ In 2012, the ticket for the Forbidden City was a postcard, and Jiu sent it to me. I thought it was still a postcard now and thought of sending it to Jiu, but the ticket was changed. It's true, it's been so many years. But the tour guide said that there was a 3D version before, ah ah ah ah ~ Why did you tell me? ! There is a restroom at the entrance of the White House. It has the highest dry toilet in the world, but it is no longer in use. The tour guide said that gay men could experience the feeling of "flying down three thousand feet" here, and I feel sorry for my male colleagues. The relatively complete Potala Palace we see now was built in the 17th century. Standing here overlooking Lhasa, it is really hard to imagine how they built this great and magical building in such a harsh environment. I can only worship it. When I left the Potala Palace, I bought a book that is only available in the Potala Palace. It is forbidden to take photos in many places, but those contents are recorded and introduced in this book. The price is 230. I bought a book. It is very beautiful, but very heavy... When I walked out of the Potala Palace and saw this scenery, I felt very calm.

By When Go |

The most conspicuous and representative thing in Lhasa is the Potala Palace. It stands majestically in everyone's heart. Listening to the worship from devout believers like a temple. The White Palace, the Red Palace and the Yellow Palace, the three-color palaces are integrated into a whole, with the Red Palace as the center. I won't go into details, but when the tour guide introduced that you put your hands on the walls on both sides, the connection is a span of 1,000 years, I was actually touched at that moment. Was it a sigh of time and vicissitudes? Perhaps it was a sigh of this towering and ageless belief? Or maybe it was to understand the relationship between man and nature, etc. Now I can't tell clearly.

At 10 o'clock, I went to the west gate of the Potala Palace to get a free reservation ticket. I took it to the main gate to queue up and enter. I went through two security checks. Recently, the ticket is free. It is said that the ticket can be sold for more than 2,000 yuan in the peak summer season. It is really exaggerated. Recently, only one-tenth of the Potala Palace is open. Because it needs frequent renovations.

Walking alone in the Potala Palace, stopping and walking, panting, you can also ask for a guide, 50 yuan per person, I didn't follow, just wanted to stop and walk with the flow of people, you can also set up electronic equipment, 30 yuan, 15 yuan online. Make an appointment in advance

Most of the temples in Lhasa are decorated in red and white. The white is milk and the red is a plant liquid. Lhasa still maintains this maintenance method. I really want to lick it.

The Potala Palace is very beautiful inside. You are not allowed to take photos, so just walk slowly and feel it.

Most of them were Tibetans. They were chanting Tibetan, worshiping, and kowtowing, while I was walking the whole time.

The Potala Palace is free to enter in winter. You only need to use your ID card to exchange for a ticket. One ID card can be used once every seven days. Be sure to bring hot water when you go to the Potala Palace... Because for me, more than a thousand steps are very high. I didn't have altitude sickness when I came here. It's very difficult to climb more than a thousand steps. I was out of breath after walking for a while... Basically, I took a break after walking a few steps... It's best to bring hot water to relieve the problem of lack of oxygen and shortness of breath... It is recommended to ask a tour guide to explain the Potala Palace, 50 yuan/person. You can't wear skirts, shorts, hats, slippers, high heels, or hats in the Potala Palace.

The Potala Palace is very mysterious in my heart. You can't take pictures in the inner hall, you can only see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart. There is a huge Sutra Library here, which contains countless scriptures. The walls of the palace, the Buddhist hall, and the corridors are covered with murals, various reliefs, thangkas, and bursts of Tibetan incense. Before entering Tibet, I read many texts about the Potala Palace. Whether in the poems of Cangyang Gyatso, "The Third Pole", or in the notes of travelers, they are far better than standing at the foot of the Potala Palace, looking up at the sky, and bathing in the Buddha's light. It is the product of the interweaving of religious beliefs and natural wonders. Its solemnity cannot help but make every traveler become its believer.

By Dream Good |

Actually, there is nothing much to say about the Potala Palace! You have to join a tour group to go to the Potala Palace. It is very difficult to buy a ticket by yourself! And there are time limits. If you are late, you can't enter and you are not allowed to buy tickets for a week! According to the tour guide, the Potala Palace may not be open to the public in a few years! Because the entire palace is a rammed earth structure, it can't bear the pressure of too many people! It's a pity to think that I can't even go to the Potala Palace when I go to Lhasa in the future. Friends, you should go early!

By Xiaohai |

It was a strenuous task for us to climb more than 200 meters to reach the highest palace in the world.

We followed the tourists and many Tibetans and slowly climbed up the stone stairs, slowly reaching the outer White House, and slowly approaching the Red Palace in the middle of the White House. We walked and rested along the way, and it was hard to believe that the place I had always wanted to visit was so close.

When we reached the highest point and prepared to enter the palace, we were already at an altitude of about 3,700 meters.

Many Tibetans do not go to the Potala Palace, but instead circumambulate around the foot of the mountain where the Potala Palace is located, and they must circumambulate in a clockwise direction.

The Potala Palace still looks so mysterious under the night sky, as if to tell us that we actually know very little about it.

By Soy Sauce Yan in seclusion |

This is a very familiar building because it is printed on the back of the fifth edition of the 50-yuan RMB note. Everyone has seen it countless times.

However, this is a very unfamiliar building. Before coming to Lhasa, I only knew that it was the most luxurious palace in Tibet, just like the Forbidden City in Beijing, which I only knew was the residence of the emperor.

Ah, I finally saw the legendary Potala Palace!

I believe this should be most people’s first reaction after seeing the Potala Palace.

Of course, some people may be excited after seeing it, while others may be disappointed, because compared with the high-rise buildings in big cities, it does not look so tall and majestic.

No matter what, after thinking about it thousands of times in my heart, it is finally before my eyes.

Due to the large number of tourists in Tibet, in order to better protect the Potala Palace, the number of visitors is limited to about 2,000 per day. It looks huge from the outside, but many places are not open to the public. In the open parts, the corridors are actually very narrow, almost one-way streets, so it is very crowded if there are many people.

Although the number of people is limited to 2,000 per day, there are still quite a few people.

It's quite spacious before you enter, but once you enter you basically have to squeeze in with the crowd.

I walked slowly in behind a tour group, listening to the guide's explanation. As someone who has not seriously studied this period of history, I didn't understand what was being said... All I can roughly understand is that many things here are unique, priceless, and extremely valuable~~~

Because photography is not allowed inside, it is so dark that I can't take any pictures.

The tour route is a one-way street with no forks. Enter through the main entrance and keep climbing up. After reaching the top floor, turn around and walk out from the back~~~

The ticket to the Potala Palace is 200 yuan and is by appointment. You can make an appointment on the first day with your ID card, and then visit the next day according to the scheduled time period.

You will hear everyone telling you that there are no tickets, no tickets, no tickets, but please go and queue up yourself. Because they want to sell you high-priced tickets, you know~~ It doesn't take much time to try it yourself, and there is nothing to lose by feeling it.

There is strict security check to enter the Potala Palace. Prohibited items are not allowed to be brought in, including lighters and mineral water. The whole tour takes about 2 hours.

By Ansheng Records |

You can purchase tickets for visits within 7 days by booking on the official website, but it is said that the website often cannot be refreshed during peak season and tickets are not available. I have not tried it and this method is not highly recommended.

The most recommended way is to join a tour group. You can sign up for a half-day tour of the Potala Palace, so you don't need to book the tickets yourself. The local travel agency has a special way to get the tickets, and there are tour guides to explain.

Things to note when visiting the Potala Palace: Men are not allowed to wear shorts or slippers, women are not allowed to wear skirts or high heels, and you are not allowed to bring lighters, matches, cigarettes, controlled knives, drinks, sunscreen and other liquids.

The tour time is basically controlled within one hour. The tour guide will take you to visit several major palaces and explain the history and religion of Tibet. The palaces are particularly magnificent and contain various rare treasures. The most impressive one is the Lingta Hall, which is simply breathtaking! The tower body is wrapped in gold, and the tower surface is also inlaid with rubies, sapphires, jade, pearls, etc. The number of various jewels reaches 100,000, and each one is worth a lot of money.

By Da Zeng |

Walking around the east side of the Potala Palace, I followed the Tibetans who were circumambulating the temple. There were almost no people who looked like tourists on the street, and there was no one inside the stainless steel guardrails that were usually used to maintain order in the queues. I turned to the entrance of the Potala Palace, and there were not many people queuing to get in. This scene made me feel that there were few tourists in Lhasa during the Spring Festival, and the Potala Palace could be entered at any time.

The area outside Deyangxia is the public area of the Potala Palace. After passing through Deyangxia and going up the steep stairs, you will reach the entrance of the White House. From here, you can truly enter the mysterious Potala Palace. After the implementation of the free ticket policy of "Winter Tour in Tibet", many temporary tourists suddenly poured in during the winter when there were few tourists. In the first two days when we arrived in Lhasa, there were almost no tourists from other places on the street. A week later, more people wearing jackets appeared on the street.

The Potala Palace responded to the free admission policy and also cancelled the ticket reservation. I thought it would be easy to enter the Potala Palace, but I didn't expect it to be a surging crowd. It seems that to enter the Potala Palace, you must line up early in the morning. Tips: 1. The entrance to the Potala Palace is the South Gate and the exit is the North Gate; 2. If you need to buy a ticket to enter, you can make an appointment at the ticket reservation office one day in advance. Next to it is the Square Police Station of the Chengguan District Public Security Bureau. It is strictly forbidden to take pictures inside the Potala Palace.

By Boiled water |

Be sure to book in advance. If you buy it near the time, the ticket will be very expensive. You also need to make an appointment. Generally, the tour time is two hours. Go there in advance and wait. Because it is a religious holy place, you should pay attention to the clothing. Girls cannot wear too revealing clothes. Boys must wear long pants, not shorts and slippers, and girls cannot wear skirts. Water cannot be brought in, but you can buy water inside. After entering the temple, you are not allowed to take pictures, and all murals are not allowed to be photographed. The guides will remind you where you can take pictures. Special reminder: It is said that the Potala Palace will be completely closed for repairs in 2020. It is not certain when it will be open again, so children who want to see it must hurry up to see it. Now the Potala Palace has started the AB route diversion tour. The long distance of the Potala Palace can no longer withstand such a large flow of people. Any period of history needs to be protected. Since you love her, you should take better care of it, right? The Potala Palace has a sense of majesty. Lhasa is also called the Sunlight City. Night falls quietly around 9pm. The Potala Palace under the sunlight looks much gentler against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds. Although it is the tallest building in Lhasa, the red and white gentleness always gives a sense of intimacy. Under the night, the Potala Palace becomes solemn in an instant. This tallest building seems to be overlooking the whole process, standing there like a guard to guard the holy city at all times.

By Ask for it |

Potala Palace, oh Potala Palace, even if I have seen you countless times, I still love you as much as the first time I saw you!

Standing under the warm sun, looking at the towering Potala Palace within reach, I feel satisfied.

I wanted to take a photo of the moment when the lights of the Potala Palace were turned on, so I asked the security police at the gate, and they told me that the lights would not be turned on until 8:30. As a result, when we walked to the vicinity at 8 o'clock, it was bright and majestic at first glance. Alas, I could only get closer and took a few unsatisfied tourist photos, and returned disappointed.

I got a ticket for on-site reservation and only had to wait for an hour to enter.

You are only allowed to enter the Potala Palace once, and you can't take photos in the Red Palace, so I just kept taking photos in the White Palace.

By Quincy |

The best angle to appreciate the Potala Palace, besides the square in front, is Yaowang Mountain, located southwest of the Potala Palace. This is also the location to take pictures of the back of the 50-yuan RMB note.

During the winter tour of Tibet, all 5A-level scenic spots in Tibet are free of charge, and no reservation is required in advance, and you can visit on the same day.

From the square of the south gate, after passing through layers of security checks, we finally arrived at the foot of the Red Hill where the Potala Palace is located. Looking from the bottom of the hill, the Potala Palace looks even more majestic.

For the sake of protecting cultural relics, no photography or videography is allowed inside the White House and the Red Palace. Friends who want to witness the mysteries of the place can only come in person to feast their eyes.

By Kahara_ |

The Potala Palace is the world's highest-altitude magnificent building that combines palaces, castles and temples. It is also the largest and most complete ancient palace complex in Tibet. The outer wall of the palace is 2 to 5 meters thick, the foundation is directly buried in the rock layer, and the walls are all built with granite. According to our tour guide, a proper amount of milk and sugar are added to the white paint of the White House. Every year when the Potala Palace is painted, believers will come to help spontaneously, and many believers will donate their own milk as paint. The roof and window eaves of the Potala Palace are wooden structures, with hip-and-gable and peak-style roofs in the style of Han architecture. The wall under the eaves is decorated with gilded copper ornaments, and the images are all Buddhist instruments and eight treasures, with a strong Tibetan Buddhist color.

There are many collections in the hall, but filming is not allowed (including photography and videography). If you have plenty of time, it is recommended to follow the guide's explanation and take a slow tour.

This palace, which has a history of more than a thousand years, has many laurels on its head. However, among all those laurels, there is one that moves me the most - the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This land has gradually been integrated into the history of the Chinese nation because of Princess Wencheng's marriage. The great Potala Palace was originally built by Songtsen Gampo to marry Princess Wencheng. Is there any greater gift in the world than the Potala Palace?

Ticket A and Ticket B are automatically booked by the system. Ticket A has more itineraries, but it is unclear how many more venues there are. If you want to book again, you have to wait a week to make an appointment. Generally, you have to get the reservation ticket first and then the ticket. The time limit is very strict. It is more convenient if you have a channel to get it through someone you know. Now it seems that you don’t need a ticket to travel to Tibet in winter, but you still have to make an appointment in advance. It seems that the Potala Palace will not be open to the public in a few years. Anyway, I heard it, and I don’t know if it’s true or not. Friends who want to go should hurry up.

I rented a pair of headphones for 20 yuan. Deyangxia Square is the last place where you can take photos. You need to be pious when entering the main hall. The tour guide said that the black cloth is heavier and is made of yak hair. It is purely handmade and has a good windproof effect. The pattern on it looks like the logo of China Unicom, but it is actually a Chinese knot.

I got up at 5:30 in the morning and went to the ticket booking office next to the Potala Palace to book a ticket in the dark. When I arrived at 6:30, there were about 40 people in line in front of me. The booking window opened at 9:00, and I booked a ticket for the Potala Palace visit at 9:20 on the 25th. After booking the ticket, I went to the back of the Potala Palace and took a photo of her back. In the evening, we walked around the Potala Palace. The sunset made the Potala Palace beautiful and sacred.

The next day, Da Zi and I went to take photos of the Potala Palace. Although it was still dark, there were already many people circumambulating the Potala Palace. There are many people visiting the Potala Palace every day, and a long line formed in front of the gate at around 8 o'clock in the morning. We entered the Potala Palace around 9:30. We hired a tour guide who was very professional and dedicated. She not only introduced the architecture of the Potala Palace, but also introduced a lot of knowledge about Tibetan Buddhism. Da Zi likes white walls. The outer wall of the Potala Palace is surrounded by prayer barrels.

The deep impression that the Potala Palace left on me was not its historical accumulation and inheritance, nor the mountains of treasures inside it, but its magical architectural sense. The day before yesterday, before entering the city, I saw the Potala Palace standing in the center of the city from afar across the wide Lhasa River. Today, I looked at it up close and saw its red walls and white buildings against the blue sky, with wisps of white clouds floating in the sky. It was so majestic and overlooking all living things. In fact, the Potala Palace is not a tall building, but because of its unique architectural form and geographical location, coupled with its simple and powerful color composition, it creates and sets off its unique style.

I won't talk about the interior of the Potala Palace, but compared with a few years ago, there are a few more closed places. I'm afraid there will be less and less to see in the future.

You need to hire a tour guide, and you also need to learn something when traveling. I won’t go into details here. I hope everyone can go and see it with their own eyes, touch it, and feel it for themselves. Everyone will have their own different feelings.

It is a historical and cultural attraction, but its color scheme is not inferior to that of natural landscapes. In addition to nature, humans are also God's masterpiece.

I originally planned to go early to queue up for an appointment, but then I felt too tired and decided to sleep until I woke up naturally. I walked 2 kilometers from Guichu Hotel to the Potala Palace and exchanged 100 yuan in 50 cents at the Agricultural Bank next to it. There was no need to queue up, and there was a special window for changing money. It seemed that many people were changing money.

We arrived at the reservation window at around 11 o'clock. There were about a dozen people in front of us, not many people. When we got to the window and handed in our ID cards, a reservation ticket was printed with the visiting time printed on it (about two hours later). We were also told to enter an hour in advance. Basically, we just got the ticket and went in.

Before entering the Potala Palace, you need to go through a ticket check. There is also a coin exchange place next to the gate, but it is called "buy", which probably means there will be discounts. After visiting the Treasure House, you will go through another ticket check when you are ready to climb the Potala Palace. It mainly depends on the time. People are allowed in batches according to the scheduled time period.

After entering, there is another security check. The security check is very strict, similar to that at the airport. You cannot bring liquids or lighters. The security check channel is very narrow, and you can only line up one line to enter.

A man in front was found to have a lighter in his pocket, but when asked, he said he didn't have one. After being found out, he said it was okay and he didn't know how to use it. He was kicked out by security and his reservation was invalidated.

Many people say that you must hire a tour guide to explain the Potala Palace so that you can understand the Buddhist culture and the background of the palace. But my mom and I are lazy and just want to take a quick look. Isn't traveling about going wherever you want and doing whatever you want? So we just came here with our hands waving.

There were donation boxes placed every few steps along the one-way tour route, so I just passed one along the way. Although I didn't have a devoted heart to Buddhism, the general idea was that since I had come to visit a Buddhist home, I naturally had to show my appreciation.

Although I have seen countless beautiful scenery from Chengdu to Lhasa, I was still indescribably excited when I arrived at the Potala Palace. People say that there are three types of people who come to Tibet: those who have been heartbroken, those who are confused, and those who are crazy. I am not one of these three types of people, but I firmly believe that this must be an unforgettable experience. The Potala Palace is particularly beautiful against the backdrop of the blue sky. The Potala Palace is a palace, not a temple. Its political nature is similar to that of the Forbidden City. It was the political center of the Tibetan region in history. The place where we live is very close to the Potala Palace, so we can walk or take a tricycle to the Potala Palace for worship. I remember that five years ago, I drove the Sichuan-Tibet Line through Lhasa. Because of the rush of time, I only took a look at the Potala Palace and left. I didn’t even know that there were lakes in front and behind the Potala Palace. I worshipped around the Potala Palace clockwise. Along the way, there were believers who came to worship, regardless of gender or age, and they all had firm eyes. In the Tibetan area, you will feel how powerful faith is.

The Potala Palace (Tibetan: པོ་ཏ་ལ, Tibetan pinyin: bo da la, Willy: po ta la), located on the Marpori Mountain in the northwest of Lhasa, the capital of China's Tibet Autonomous Region, is the world's highest and most magnificent building integrating palaces, castles and temples. It is also the largest and most complete ancient palace and castle complex in Tibet.

You have to buy tickets for the Potala Palace three days in advance, and it is really hard to get a ticket during the peak season. But the travel agency made sure that they could buy tickets for the Potala Palace for us, so I saved a lot of worry hahahaha.

With blue sky and white clouds, we found a bench to sit down and quietly watched the bustling crowd. It is actually the best place to daydream.

We walked through the underground passage and arrived at the foot of the Potala Palace opposite. Surrounding the Potala Palace, Tibetans were worshiping devoutly.

The tour time of the Potala Palace cannot be confirmed. It is arranged by the official Potala Palace. The tour guide will inform the specific time the day before the visit. We were arranged to visit the main hall at 12 o'clock. We can pass the second gate of the Potala Palace (the gate of the wordless stele) at about 11:30 and enter the first gate at 11:00. Go to the meeting place on time at 10:40 to collect the ticket (reservation voucher) and the audio guide. The tour guide will first take you to the treasure house next to it for a visit and explanation. After passing the gate of the wordless stele, the tour guide will take away the ticket (reservation voucher) and exchange it for the real ticket. It is still allowed to take pictures of the exterior along the way, but it is forbidden to take pictures inside all the palaces. You can only appreciate and worship with your own eyes.

At 9 o'clock, the Potala Palace Square seemed to have not yet awakened, with few tourists and excellent conditions for shooting.

Generally speaking, when you come to Tibet and Lhasa, it is impossible not to take a photo in front of the Potala Palace... However, I am that impossible person.

All my attention was attracted by the majestic building in front of me. It is the highest palace, castle and temple in the world. It is really beautiful.

By Heart Fire |

We have always been wondering why the white lime on the walls was painted so casually. Later, the tour guide told us that the white lime was sprayed on with a high-pressure water gun, and that milk, white sugar, rock sugar, honey, brown sugar and other ingredients were added to the white lime.

Before entering the Potala Palace, the tour guide said that the least valuable things in the palace were gold and silver. After entering, I found that it was true. There was too much gold inside. There is a time limit for visiting the Potala Palace. In this short 1 hour, I received a lot of previously unknown information. The amount of information was too much to remember at all. I only regretted not learning about the Potala Palace in advance.

You are not allowed to take photos inside the Potala Palace, so there are no pictures of the inside. After leaving the Potala Palace, you can see many prayer wheels. It is said that there are 1,853 prayer wheels. I don’t know if it is true or not, but there are really a lot of them.

Although the ticket is free, it is not only tiring but also troublesome to queue up and get the reservation ticket. So we bought the explanation + Vajra knot online directly, 98/person. We queued up to take off our coats for security check to enter the Potala Palace. We were not allowed to bring water or fire... There were many long steps, so we could only walk and rest, otherwise we would be exhausted. The tour + explanation time was one hour. If we stopped for a while, the staff would loudly urge us to move forward.

The Potala Palace has a limited time limit for visitors to visit every day. The tour leader arranged an afternoon tour for us and waited for the tour guide at the designated location at around 1 o'clock. Fortunately, there was a tour guide, otherwise we would have just been a quick tour. There were so many people in the hall that we spent extra money to buy headphones so that we would not miss the tour guide's explanation.

The visit requires following all Tibetan Buddhist taboos: you cannot wear a hat or sunglasses after entering the main hall, especially you cannot wear a skirt. Tourists wearing skirts will be asked to change into pants before entering. You cannot take photos in the main hall, and you cannot step on the threshold with your feet. In addition, you cannot bring liquids, which made us worry whether the 30MI sunscreen will be confiscated, because in Lhasa, you cannot go out without sunscreen. Later, the tour guide said that sunscreen is fine. The least valuable thing in the Potala Palace is gold, the tour guide said. The Potala Palace is not only a treasure house of wealth, but also a sacred temple. For Tibetans, it is a noble religious symbol. For others, its symbolic power is related to the metaphysical realm: noble, great, solemn...

From the Jokhang Temple, we rode to the Potala Palace. We felt its majesty even more when we were there! The Potala Palace was built in 631 under the supervision of Songtsen Gampo, the 33rd Tibetan king of Tubo. It became the political center of the unified Tubo Dynasty at that time. Later, the Tubo Kingdom disintegrated and was severely damaged by natural and man-made disasters. In 1645, the Fifth Dalai Lama rebuilt the Potala Palace to consolidate the local government of Ganden Phodrang, which was a combination of politics and religion. Later, it was continuously expanded to its current size.

The Potala Palace is also a holy place in the hearts of all pilgrims. It is mainly composed of the Red Palace and the White Palace. The highest Red Palace in the middle is an important place for religious ceremonies, and the surrounding White Palace is mainly the activity place of the Dalai Lama. The Potala Palace must be the most magnificent building in Lhasa, the whole of Tibet. One theory is that this palace-style building complex was built by the Tubo King Songtsen Gampo to marry Princess Bhrikuti and Princess Wencheng; another theory is that it was built as the royal palace after Songtsen Gampo moved the capital to Lhasa. Later, the fifth Dalai continued to expand it in the 17th century AD and became the winter palace of Dalai Lamas of all generations, and the ruling center of Tibet where politics and religion were combined.

In Lhasa, the Potala Palace stands there eternally, and can be seen from many places in the old city. Its image has long been familiar to the Chinese people, but I didn't expect that the beauty would be even more breathtaking when it was close to them. You must ask for an interpreter when you come to the Potala Palace. We happened to find an uncle who looked a little vicissitudes of life, but also a little foreign. He had received leaders from both China and abroad, so he could even mix in some English. At each point, not only did he explain the ins and outs simply and clearly, but he also conveyed a theme of correctly understanding religion, understanding historical conflicts, and embracing various different ideas, which coincided with my thoughts. I learned a lot in the two-hour journey, but it was a pity that I couldn't take pictures along the way and couldn't remember them. The interior of the Potala Palace is indeed a treasure house. It is definitely worth it to go in and take a peek, even if you forget everything when you come out. Here, you can feel the purity of religion and the supremacy of secular power at the same time. This center of political and religious integration is very special in China. Tibetan Buddhism not only guides the masses in Tibet spiritually, but also affects them day and night in actual material life.

Tickets can be booked through the WeChat applet. Tickets are released at 7:30 a.m. the day before. You must ask for a guide. It is recommended to go to the top ticket office to arrange for a guide. There are many people selling guides at the entrance queue. They are too expensive. If you go inside, 10 people will share a guide for 20 yuan per person. It is a waste of time to come to the Potala Palace without a guide.

The Potala Palace is the landmark of Tibet. If you don’t visit the Potala Palace, it’s like you haven’t been to Tibet.

The Potala Palace is the highest point in Lhasa and can be seen from all angles in the city. The red and white Tibetan-style building is very magnificent and beautiful.

The South Square of the Potala Palace is the best place to take panoramic photos from the front.

The first floor of the Potala Palace has a very beautiful garden landscape, as well as old offices such as the Snow Prison and the Snow Kingdom. The top is the core place where religion and politics are integrated - the Red Palace and the White Palace. The location is high and you need to climb up the slope to visit. Lhasa is 3,600 meters above sea level. You need to walk slowly when climbing the plateau, and you must not run.

I want to complain about the Tibetan tour guides. They don't let me listen. You talk, I think it's interesting to listen, but I'm not following you all the time. Why bother to be so fussy? To put it another way, the more you try to monopolize things, the more you will be washed away by the flood of big data. Night is a good way to appreciate the Potala Palace. After the lights are turned on, the solemn and majestic Potala Palace looks even more sacred in the dark. Under the illumination of the lights, the Red Palace is in the center and the White Palace is on the east side. A heavy sense of history rushes towards you. In addition to the Potala Palace Square in front, Zongjiaolukang Park in the back is also a good place to take night photos. The calm water surface clearly reflects the shadow of the Potala Palace, which is interesting. It is like seeing flowers in the fog. Why bother to be serious?

The most impressive thing about the entire Potala Palace from bottom to top and from outside to inside is that the stupa hall is decorated with turquoise as big as a fist, beeswax as big as a head, pearls as big as eyeballs, and of course countless dzi beads, rubies and sapphires. The least valuable thing in the golden and magnificent Potala Palace is probably gold. Alas, I feel sorry for the tour guide and the interpreter for a second. The textbook says that the Potala Palace brings together the wisdom of the working people of all ethnic groups and is a symbol of cultural exchange between Han, Tibetan and other ethnic groups. I think there is another sentence that can be added: this is the place where the wealth of the working people of the Tibetans from all dynasties is gathered.

In 641 AD, Tubo Songtsen Gampo built the Potala Palace on Mount Marpuri, reportedly to marry Princess Wencheng from Chang'an. At that time, the Potala Palace was far from its current grandeur. During the continuous construction process, the Potala Palace gradually became an unsurpassed complex of palaces, Buddhist halls and stupas. The completion of the Lama stupa in 1936 determined the current layout of the Potala Palace. In December 1994, the Potala Palace was selected as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

I was still a little out of breath facing the very high steps. The love story of Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng made the Potala Palace famous all over the world, but what people don’t know is that the current Potala Palace was not built by Songtsen Gampo for Princess Wencheng. The Potala Palace at that time was destroyed in the war. The Potala Palace we see now was built by the Fifth Emperor of the Qing Dynasty. However, in Lhasa, which is 3,600 meters above sea level, this still has to be said to be a miracle.

This kind of place needs no further explanation, it is the most sacred place in Tibet. The palace built beside the mountain, which serves as both a ruling palace and a temple, has a history of nearly 1,400 years. Of course, it has undergone many renovations in history to be as intact as it is today. However, although the interior decoration is very luxurious, the living environment here is not very good. Living in such a place requires a certain physical and psychological endurance. But it seems that Tibetans regard this place more as a place to cultivate their body and mind, so such an environment is needed to play this role.

As for entering the Potala Palace for a tour, there is not much practical significance. Tickets are hard to come by, and taking photos is not allowed after entering. Plus, if you don't understand Tibetan culture, what's the point of entering?

There are more and more people visiting the Potala Palace now. As the number of visitors is limited every day, remember to book tickets for the next day in advance. It is still worth a visit, but you must reserve time. It is said that the queue now takes several hours.

It takes about two and a half hours to visit all the open and explained places in the Potala Palace. Our Tibetan guide said that maybe in two years, the Potala Palace will be renovated again and will probably not be open to the public again. Friends who are about to go there and yearn for the Potala Palace should cherish their time.

If you have enough time, here is a suggestion: enter the gate half an hour to an hour in advance, and first go to the Snow Prison on the left. It is like the "Rent Collection Courtyard" and denounces the torture of slave society. It is said that there are two complete human skins inside. People with strong tastes and courage can take a look. The reason why it is said is that it was under maintenance and not open when we went there, but the Snow Prison definitely exists. Then you can go to the Treasure House on the right, which exhibits about 200 palace collections, including imperial edicts, seals, gifts, literature and books, palm leaf scriptures, Buddha statues, thangkas, ritual instruments, etc. After watching, enter the main gate to the mountain.

Every year the Potala Palace is repainted, adding honey and milk to the paint.

The top hall of the Potala Palace was built in a cave.

The jewels inlaid are priceless

The Potala Palace looks magnificent from the outside, but it is narrow inside and the stairs are extremely steep.

The reason is probably that there are too many collections, which results in limited space for activities.

Even the palace where the supreme leader resides is no more than this. They study Buddhism diligently and never indulge in extravagance and debauchery. They take saving all sentient beings as their lifelong career.

The Potala Palace is a landmark of Lhasa. It is worth asking for a good guide at the entrance. Inside are the residences and offices of successive lamas, as well as their stupas.

It is best to queue up early to book tickets for the Potala Palace during the Spring Festival. Although I didn't get in in the end, I took a photo as a souvenir.
