Chiang's Former Residence

The Jiang Family Hometown Scenic Area includes several smaller attractions: Wuling Gate, the small Western-style house, Wenchang Pavilion, Wuling Middle School, the Jiang Family Ancestral Hall, Fenghao House, Yutai Salt Shop, Xikou Museum, and the Mausoleum of Jiang's Mother. Admission is 120 yuan. If you do not visit these smaller attractions, you do not need to purchase an entrance fee.

I looked up the origins of Lishe Airport's name and decided to add this attraction as a last-minute addition. It's just over 20 kilometers from the airport, and parking is convenient. The area isn't too large, so it's often visited by elderly groups. It feels more like an ancient town, and learning about its history is quite moving. If you have time, I highly recommend a visit.

Xikou is a place with beautiful mountains and clear waters. If you have plenty of time, you can spend two days visiting Jiang's Former Residence and Xuedou Mountain. If you have less time, you can choose one of the two.

For a one-way trip from Ningbo to visit Chiang Kai-shek's Former Residence, take bus No. 988 from Ningbo Railway Station to Yinfeng Square (no transfer required). Walk the one-kilometer route to Wuling Commercial Street to visit the residence. After touring the pedestrian street and back, exit at Wuling Gate and enjoy a farmhouse meal at the entrance to Wuling Square. Then, take bus No. 266 from the KFC entrance to Xikou Bus Station and transfer to bus No. 987 back to Ningbo Railway Station. The 987 has a large fleet and seats are available at the terminal. Xikou Bus Station is staffed, and boarding is orderly and the journey takes about an hour and a half. For local specialties, the local Thousand Layer Pastry is delicious, 10 yuan a pack. The vegetarian varieties are the best. For a cheaper option, there's a small alley in the middle of Wuling West Road Commercial Pedestrian Street. You'll pass by it on the No. 988. This place is similar to a factory, with multiple ovens baking freshly made dishes. For meals, try the farmhouse cuisine outside Wuling Gate; the river fish is quite delicious. Eat the taro locally. It won't keep well if you take it away.

As a tourist attraction, it is a bit far from Ningbo city and transportation is not very convenient.

If you are traveling together with other attractions, such as Xuedou Mountain Scenic Area, then you can consider it; if you are visiting the "Jiang's Former Residence" alone like I did this time, the cost-effectiveness is indeed not high.

After all, the 120 yuan ticket price is not cheap among domestic tourist attractions. The entire scenic area is not very large, with only about 8 former residence buildings open to the public.

If you like the history of the Republic of China, you can gain much more by buying a few biographies for 120 yuan than spending half a day wandering around the scenic area.



Remember: If you want to go, you must hire a tour guide (150 yuan, a rich way), or go to the tourist service center to rent an electronic audio guide (30 yuan, a cost-effective way).

2023.7.20 The Chiang Kai-shek Residence is probably the most important landscape in Xikou Scenic Area. It is the former residence of Mr. Chiang Kai-shek. Coming here, you can feel the footsteps of history. Without Chairman Mao’s protection, it would probably have been destroyed in the war. The former residence is very complete, with exquisite and elegant facilities and a well-arranged landscape.

Our first stop was the Chiang Clan Ancestral Hall. While the hall isn't very large, it houses numerous Chiang family tablets. The walls showcase the family's rise to prominence, including, of course, Chiang Kai-shek's life. The Chiang family's former residence isn't large either, but it's elegantly decorated, showcasing the various Western-style furnishings popular at the time.

I personally don't like cultural attractions, and the Jiang family's former residence refers to several small attractions in Xikou Town, such as Wenchang Pavilion, Liang's Ancestral Hall, Fenghao House, Yutai Salt Shop, and Jiang's Mother Cemetery. If you don't go inside, it's free to wander around Xikou Ancient Town. Those former sites are just ordinary scenery and buildings, and even the furniture is mostly replicas. The rest are pictures and stories...

Cultural landscape, you don’t have time to go, but if you have time, just take a look

The Jiang Family's Former Residence in Xikou Town, Fenghua, Zhejiang. Xikou Town has three major attractions: the Jiang Family Ancestral Hall, the Jiang Family's Former Residence, and the Salt Shop.

It is a must-see attraction in Xikou. It belongs to the humanities category and can deepen your understanding of Chiang Kai-shek.

The Chiang Family Residence is the former residence of Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo. It is a group of buildings, including Fenghao House and Yutai Salt Shop.

In Fenghua, Ningbo, it is said that before Chiang Kai-shek left the mainland, he returned to his former residence and drew a picture of the round sky and square earth.

History will one day give a fair evaluation.

Not to mention the large number of people during the May Day holiday, the ticket price of 120 yuan is not worth it. There is not much content to absorb, mainly pictures introducing the Jiang family.

I still recommend going to Xuedou Mountain instead of visiting Jiang's former residence. It's really not worth it.

Chiang's former residence is not bad. You need a tour guide to show you around. I learned a lot of stories about Chiang Kai-shek. I feel that Chiang Kai-shek made a great contribution to his hometown by building Wuling School. It is worth a visit!

You will regret not going, and you will regret it even more if you go. The facilities in the museum are so poor that all the lights are turned off before the tourists have finished browsing. Doesn’t the local government agency take care of it?

Xikou is the hometown of Chiang Kai-shek and his son Chiang Ching-kuo. 22 historical sites including Yutai Salt Shop, Fenghaofang, Wuling Gate, Wenchang Pavilion, Chiang's Mother's Mausoleum, and Chiang's Ancestral Hall are well preserved, making it the "No. 1 Cultural Town of the Republic of China."

The price of the combined ticket is high, but Xuedou Mountain is still worth a visit and you can stay in a B&B on the mountain for one night at a reasonable price.

After walking 500 meters along the main road, Wuling Gate stands tall at the entrance, its carved railings and jade masonry creating a unique charm. Following the aged stone path, through Leting, we arrived at Wenchang Pavilion. It's said that this two-story building witnessed the love between Chiang Kai-shek and Soong May-ling. Our guide's description moved us deeply to see Chiang Kai-shek's deep affection for Soong May-ling, despite the countless rivers. Yet, we couldn't help but feel pity and injustice for the women of that era. We are fortunate to be born in this era of gender equality. The view from the second-floor window, embracing distant mountains and a sea of clouds, is breathtaking! Leaving Wenchang Pavilion, we walked down the hillside to a small, historic house. It felt as if we were transported back through centuries, experiencing the daily life of Chiang Ching-kuo.

It takes 45 minutes by bus from Ningbo South Railway Station to Xikou Bus Station. Take bus No. 266 from the exit to the gate of Chiang's Former Residence, get off and walk 20 meters. The attractions inside include Wuling School, small houses, a large ancestral hall, and Chiang's Former Residence. You don't need to take a rickshaw. It only takes about 1.5 hours to visit these attractions. Don't be fooled by rickshaws that charge 60 yuan.

Arriving in Xikou that afternoon, we'd already missed our tour time. All we could do was take a quick look around the Jiang family compound and take photos at the entrances of their various residences on a pedicab. The Jiangs truly were a wealthy family. It was breathtaking.

Back in the day, locks were beautiful, and keys were elegant and stylish. Since when did Chinese people start living so rough?

Let's talk about transportation first: most tourists from other places go to Ningbo first and then to Fenghua District. Take bus No. 988 from the South Square of Ningbo Railway Station to Yinfeng Square Station. The fare is 5 yuan and the ride takes about 100 minutes. After getting off the bus, walk straight to the first intersection, turn left, and then follow that road to the end to reach the scenic area.

I was in a hurry, so I bought a ticket to Chiang's hometown. The 120 yuan ticket included the Wenchang Building (the private villa of Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling, where General Zhang Xueliang was placed under house arrest in front of the Xuedou Temple in Xikou after the "Xi'an Incident" and was temporarily imprisoned for several days), the small villa (where Chiang Ching-kuo was imprisoned, with a replica of the "Blood Washing Blood" monument erected downstairs), the Wuling School Auditorium (one of the most beautiful auditoriums in the Republic of China), the Chiang Ancestral Hall, the Fenghao House (Chiang Kai-shek's ancestral home), the Xikou Museum, Chiang's mother's tomb, etc., which allows you to get a general understanding of the history of the Chiang family and the life trajectories of Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo in their hometown before 1949.

It is well worth a visit, the scenery is picturesque and very similar to Cihu in Taiwan. Wuling Primary School is especially worth a visit.

The scenic area is quite nice, with a sense of history and beautiful scenery, and it has the quiet and beautiful atmosphere of a Jiangnan town. One drawback is that there are often dogs running around in the area, likely belonging to nearby residents. Some tourists even walk around with their dogs on leashes or even in their arms. Are they sightseeing or just walking their dogs? The staff said they have no control over this. This statement is really hard to accept.

The Chiang Kai-shek Former Residence has a package ticket for NT$120. The Chiang Kai-shek Former Residence Scenic Area includes seven smaller attractions, five of which are conveniently located on the pedestrian street of Wuling East Road. However, Dujuan Valley and Chiang's Mother's Mausoleum are located 4-5 kilometers away at the entrance of Xuedou Mountain Scenic Area and require a car, making it more convenient for self-driving tours. All of the attractions are related to Chiang Kai-shek, Soong Mei-ling, and their descendants.

It takes half a day to visit. I bought a 2-day pass, visiting Xuedou Mountain on the first day and Chiang Kai-shek's hometown on the second morning. There is a Starbucks and a KFC at the entrance of the scenic area. The scenic area is well planned and you can scan the QR code ticket everywhere. Taking photos with the special actor of Lao Jiang is a feature, but be sure to ask the price before taking photos.

Scan the Alipay QR code at the ticket hall to purchase your ticket for a 10 yuan discount. I bought a package that included the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and Xuedou Mountain (including internal transportation). For cultural and historical sites like these, hiring a guide is essential, otherwise the experience will be boring. I forgot about that at first and simply walked in. The scenic area doesn't have a gate or ticket check, only the smaller attractions do. Luckily, I found an excellent guide today, a local from Xikou whose grandmother's home is right next to Chiang Kai-shek's. I personally consider the must-see attractions at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall to be Wuling Gate, Wenchang Pavilion, the small Western-style house, the Wuling School Auditorium, Fenghao House, Yutai Salt Shop, the Chiang Clan Ancestral Hall, and Chiang Kai-shek's Mother's Mausoleum. The mausoleum is quite far from these, and I initially gave up on it. But I saw it on the way to Xuedou Mountain, parked in an alley, and walked through it. If I'd walked from the other attractions, it would have taken about half an hour. But it was packed, which shows how popular it is.

The Jiang family's hometown is in Xikou Town, more than 40 kilometers away from the center of Ningbo City. It has now become the Jiang family's hometown scenic spot and a cash cow for the local people.

Wushan Temple, Wuling Gate, Wenchang Pavilion, the small Western-style building, the Jiang Family Ancestral Hall, Fenghao Building, and Yutai Salt Shop, all places related to the Jiang family, have now been tied together to generate revenue for the government, with each person receiving 120 yuan.

This is the former residence of Chairman Chiang, Fenghua, Xikou.

Xikou is a place worth visiting near Ningbo. After all, it is Chiang Kai-shek's hometown and the scenery is nice. It is convenient to drive there. When you get there, you can take a rickshaw and climb the mountain. It is suitable for family outings.

Fenghua and Xikou, when it rains, it feels different

During a boring visit to Jiang's hometown, I tried to tell Meipi a story that my mother once told me, and then I saw Meipi's bored expression, and then I felt bad. I felt that Jiang's hometown was particularly boring.

The ticket price is also very expensive, 120 yuan per person, which includes several boring old houses and boring museums. If you are not a fan of Chiang Kai-shek, the cost-effectiveness of this 120 yuan is too low.

Jiang's hometown, various attractions are distributed along the streets along the river. There are various shops and snack bars on the street, and the prices are quite good. The cultural atmosphere here is quite strong. The transportation is also very convenient.

Xikou Town, a beautiful Jiangnan town in Fenghua, Zhejiang, boasts a rich history, picturesque scenery, a rich cultural heritage, and abundant tourism resources. It is worth a visit and it is best to avoid driving on holidays or weekends.

A place definitely worth visiting.

Wuling Gate

Wuling Gate, the gateway to Xikou Town, is said to have been a small nunnery before 1929, with an adjacent teahouse for rest. In 1929, Chiang Kai-shek transformed the gate into a three-room, two-room tower-style city gate. The characters "Wuling" are emblazoned on both sides of the gate: the outer inscription was by Kuomintang veteran Yu Youren, while the inner inscription was Chiang Kai-shek's own. He chose the name "Wuling" to show respect for his predecessors. Firstly, Chiang Kai-shek valued martial virtues; secondly, "Wuling" is a homophone of "Wuling" in Tao Yuanming's "Peach Blossom Spring." Sanli Old Street, just beyond Wuling Gate, is the hometown where Chiang Kai-shek and his son, Chiang Ching-kuo, grew up. Small Western-style houses line the street. Wenchang Pavilion is to the left of Wuling Gate, and Wuling Middle School is to the right.

After being mentioned so many times, I finally got to visit Chiang Kai-shek's former residence and learn about it. The four characters "Dear, Sincere, and Sincere" left a deep impression on me. I bought a combined ticket online for Jiang's hometown and Xuedou Mountain (including two shuttle bus rides, a train, and a cable car ride) for 250 yuan per person. A trip to Jiang's hometown alone would cost 120 yuan per person. This is a famous attraction, so it was bustling with tourists. It was the first tour group I'd seen in a few days.

The Chiang Kai-shek's hometown is an AAAAA-level scenic spot and a key national cultural relic protection site. Xikou Town, Chiang Kai-shek's hometown, is an ancient town with over a thousand years of history. Surrounded by mountains, Wulingtou faces Bijia Mountain on the south bank of the Shanxi River, forming an overflowing estuary, hence the name Xikou.

We first arrived at Wuling, a gatehouse built in the style of a Wuguan Pass. The inscription "Wuling" is engraved on both sides of the gate: the front is written by Yu Youren, a veteran Kuomintang calligrapher, and the back is in Chiang Kai-shek's own handwriting. Inside Wuling Gate, a three-mile-long street borders the winding Shanxi River. To the left of Wuling Gate is Wenchang Pavilion, also known as Leting. After their marriage, Chiang Kai-shek and Soong May-ling often stayed here during their visits to Xikou, making it their private villa. The first floor of Wenchang Pavilion served as a reception room, while the second floor housed Chiang Kai-shek and Soong May-ling's bedrooms and living rooms. After the Xi'an Incident, General Zhang Xueliang was sent to Xikou for house arrest and initially stayed in Wenchang Pavilion, where he stayed for 10 days before being transferred to Xuedou Mountain. On December 12, 1939, Wenchang Pavilion was destroyed by Japanese bombing. The current building was rebuilt on the original site in 1987. The living room and bedroom are not very large, but they are simple and elegant. There is a piano in the room, and wedding photos and paintings by Soong May-ling hang on the walls. This shows that Soong May-ling was very knowledgeable in literature, music, and painting.

Next door is a small Western-style house. It was originally the residence of foreign military advisor Donald T.V. After returning from studying in the Soviet Union, Chiang Ching-kuo lived here with his wife, Fang Liang, and son, Hsiao-wen. While Chiang Ching-kuo was living there, the east side of the upper floor housed his bedroom, the west side his study, and the center was his living room. On the first floor, a stone tablet inscribed with the words "Blood for Blood" recounts the tragic death of Chiang Ching-kuo's mother, Mao Fumei. In 1939, Japanese invaders bombed Xikou, and Mao Fumei was tragically crushed to death by a collapsed wall at the rear entrance of her Fenghao house. Upon hearing the news, Chiang Ching-kuo rushed from Jiangxi to attend the funeral. In tears, he wrote the four characters "Blood for Blood" to express his unwavering resolve to avenge his mother's murder.

We visited the Chiang Ancestral Hall, the Chiang Kai-shek's former residence, Fenggaofang (the ancestral house allocated to Chiang Kai-shek), the Chiang Kai-shek's ancestral home, Yutai Salt Shop (Chiang Kai-shek's birthplace; after his father's death, the family split up and the salt shop was run by Chiang Kai-shek's brother, Chiang Kai-qing), and the Xikou Museum. At the entrance to the former residence, a man dressed in a long gown, dressed as Chiang Kai-shek, took photos with tourists.

Street shops display many local specialties, and the famous thousand-layer cakes are baked and sold first, and the unique craftsmanship attracts people.

There's no entrance fee to the Chiang Kai-shek Scenic Area, but you do need a package ticket to visit Chiang Kai-shek's former residence! It's true that a place with outstanding people and beautiful scenery is a place of great people. With mountains and rivers, such a spiritual place is undoubtedly the place where great people come from! Go there and experience the cultural baptism of great people!

It was originally a small town in a remote corner, but unfortunately it was overdeveloped and became noisy and bustling.

As a cultural landscape of Xikou, it is necessary to come here once to see the birthplace of the Jiang family and understand the cultural customs of Jiangsu and Zhejiang... I came here on the second day of the Chinese New Year. There were so many people, so I decisively hired a yellow croaker cart. There were yellow croaker carts shuttling between the six small scenic spots, which saved time and effort. The driver also served as a free tour guide.

The Chiang Kai-shek family's birthplace primarily includes Wenchang Pavilion, a small western-style house, Fenghao House, and Yutai Salt Shop (the ancestral hall was built later). We recommend doing your research before visiting Chiang Kai-shek's birthplace, or hiring a local guide. A cursory tour of these cultural attractions, beyond simply "visiting," is generally meaningless. A guided tour typically costs around 100 yuan for a two-hour visit (prices increase by 50% during the Spring Festival holiday, depending on your bargaining skills).



In addition, friends who plan to visit Chiang Kai-shek's hometown during statutory holidays are advised to go there earlier in the morning, as the streets of Xikou Town are significantly more crowded after lunch.



After entering Wuling Gate, the first thing you see is Wenchang Pavilion (because the Wenchang Pavilion attraction is incorrectly geotagged on China-TravelNote, I will review it here first! Waiting for correction!)

Wenchang Pavilion was originally dedicated to Wenchang Emperor. Chiang Kai-shek rebuilt it in 1925 and it became a private villa for him and the Soong family. (Only Chiang Kai-shek would dare to invite a spirit to live there himself, though this may also be due to Chiang Kai-shek's Christian faith.) The cement tower in front of the pavilion is a water supply tower built specifically for the Soong family. The original pavilion was destroyed by Japanese aircraft on December 12, 1939. The current building was rebuilt in 1986 and is the only newly built cultural relic among the four major memorial sites in the Chiang Kai-shek family's former residence. On the other side of Wenchang Pavilion is the [Small Western-style House].

The furniture on the second floor was also a later addition, but it still adheres to the original design: the bed has six legs and a mirror at the headboard, for example. The upstairs living room and bedroom are reversed from the original layout, which feels a bit odd! The paintings by the Song family on the wall are nice, even though they are reproductions. The view from the second-floor window reveals Wenchang Pavilion's perfect location in Xikou.

It's just okay, not much to see overall. There are many tricycles around, which basically take you 50.

I didn't take many photos, but since I'm going to review it, Xikou is surrounded by mountains and rivers, and its cultural history is quite good. It's a place worth visiting on the weekend, climbing the mountains, and seeing the Maitreya Buddha. It will be another pleasant weekend. Don't go on major holidays or other major holidays. You won't be able to eat or sleep well, and a quick tour is not for me.

The main purpose is to visit the cultural heritage. Of course, the scenery is really good, and the feng shui is even better.

Visiting Chiang's hometown is like taking a history lesson again. I either stood there quietly looking at the pictures and texts on the wall, or listened to the vivid narration of the professional tour guide. It aroused a strong interest in me, who had no interest in history in class during my student days.

The whole street is full of them. You don't need to buy tickets for the old street, but you need to buy tickets for more than 100 yuan to enter the scenic spots, and you need to buy a combined ticket for several buildings. I feel that the cost-effectiveness is not high, so I just walked around the street.

A good 5a, with beautiful scenery, very objective comments on Chiang Kai-shek, the Xikou Museum is well built, the tomb of Chiang's mother is not high but very far away, it is recommended to take the bus, it takes half an hour to walk there.

The scenery is very good, basically the same as it was 15 years ago, with fewer attractions. Chiang Kai-shek's former residence is still worth a visit. Other special features include peaches and big taro.

The former residence of the Jiang family is a street with neighboring stars scattered on the side. As you walk around, you can see thousand-layer cakes and monk cakes everywhere. As a local snack in Xikou, it is quite famous.

I spent an afternoon touring the Chiang Kai-shek Residence in detail. It was quite nice. The architecture was still similar to when I visited it ten years ago, but the overall planning of the scenic area was completely different. It was more systematic and more complete. It was indeed refreshing.

The environment is quiet, rich in cultural heritage, and there are many delicious foods. It is a great weekend destination that combines humanities, nature, and food!

This is a key attraction in the Xikou Scenic Area, located on Xikou Old Street. Originally, there were six ancestral houses belonging to Chiang Kai-shek. The current large area of Republican-era buildings was expanded upon after his rise to prominence. Numerous photographs of Chiang Kai-shek, his father, and his mother from various periods of his life showcase the history of the Chiang family and explore ancient customs and culture. This is a truly worthwhile attraction.

The Jiang Family Hometown in Xikou can become a separate scenic spot because there are indeed many ancient residences related to the Jiang family, such as "Wushan Temple, Wuling Gate, Little White Building, Wenchang Pavilion" and so on. It is the most important tourist attraction of my trip to Ningbo.

After all, the Chiang family has had a huge influence on Chinese history.

It mainly introduces everything related to Chiang Kai-shek. Almost every scenic spot has the same old photos hanging on it. It is interesting to listen to the explanation, but I personally feel that this scenic spot is not cost-effective. The scenic spot still retains the ancient architectural style, and the commercial atmosphere here is relatively strong.

Chiang's hometown has a strong flavor of the Republic of China, with many precious historical photos and cultural relics, which is worth seeing!

The Jiang Family Hometown in Xikou is a must-see cultural attraction for tourists to Ningbo. As the hometown of Chiang Kai-shek, the former president of the Republic of China, there are attractions such as the Chiang Family Residence, the Ancestral Hall, Wenchang Pavilion, Wuling Gate and Yutai Salt Shop (Chiang Kai-shek's birthplace) where visitors can learn about Chiang Kai-shek's life and experience the charm of the Republic of China. The combined ticket costs 120 yuan. If you do not want to enter the attractions, you can also take a leisurely stroll on the old street.

The Jiang Family Former Residence is a complex of buildings, comprising the Fenghao House, the Small Western-style House, and the Yutai Salt Shop. The Fenghao House, located on Xikou Middle Street, covers 4,800 square meters and has a total construction area of 1,850 square meters. The main gate, the Suju House, the Baoben Hall, and the independent small building are original, dating from the Qing Dynasty. The remaining buildings were expanded by the Jiang family in 1929. The Small Western-style House, a three-room, two-story building with a Western-style design, faces the Shanxi River in front and Wushan Mountain in the back. It covers 240 square meters and has a total construction area of 310 square meters. It was built in 1930.

A small town nestled between mountains and water, although it has been developed for a long time, it still retains its simple folk customs and beautiful scenery like a paradise. It is worth walking around! We went to the hometown of the Jiang family.

The Jiang Family Hometown is now an old street dotted with the Jiang family's former residences. Key attractions include Wuling Gate, Wenchang Pavilion, the small Western-style house, Fenghao House, and the Yutai Salt Shop. Wuling School and the Xikou Museum are also located there. Admission to the old street is free, and various Xikou specialties can be purchased here. Tickets are checked at the entrance to each attraction; please keep your ticket safe as it will be checked at each attraction.

The ticket price is 120 yuan, and there are no discounts anywhere. In fact, the old houses are not very big, but you must go and see them when you come to Xikou.

The scenery is beautiful, the people are outstanding, the mountains and rivers are picturesque, and the natural resources are abundant.
