China Academy of Art

The China Academy of Art (CAA) is China's first comprehensive national art institution of higher learning. It was jointly established by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Zhejiang Province. It is also the earliest institution of higher learning to implement design, the birthplace of China's earliest art revolutionary group, the only place in China where a national key discipline of fine arts is located, one of the first batch of national "Double First-Class" world-class discipline construction universities, a key construction university in Zhejiang Province, selected for the national high-level university construction program for government-sponsored graduate students, a Chinese government scholarship institution for international students, one of the first national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and one of the first demonstration bases for studying abroad in China by the Ministry of Education.

Many people don't know that China Academy of Art has two campuses, one is the Nanshan Campus at No. 218 Nanshan Road, Xihu District (Baidu search usually pushes the address of this campus), and the other is the Xiangshan Campus at No. 352 Xiangshan Road, Zhuantang Street. Nanshan Campus is the old campus of the school. It is located on the edge of West Lake. It is relatively smaller than the campus and has limited opening to the public (not open to the public during holidays, winter and summer vacations). The famous campus of the Academy of Fine Arts is actually Xiangshan Campus, which is larger and open on holidays. It is just far from the city center, and there is only bus to get there (no direct subway). Those who want to go there can check the route in advance. We took advantage of the National Day holiday this time to avoid the crowds in the city center, so we chose the Xiangshan Campus of the Academy of Fine Arts, which is a certain distance from the city center. However, we only walked around and didn't go into many exhibitions. It took nearly 3.5 hours. I had been wanting to find the internet-famous wall and the crooked tree, but I was so tired, and I couldn’t find a commercial street to have lunch, so I lost interest later... At the last minute, I wanted to give it another try (I would be unwilling to come back without seeing it), so I walked to the other side of the campus, and saw many unique buildings along the way. The most important thing was that I finally found the internet-famous wall and the crooked tree I had been longing for... Only then did I realize: if we had not been attracted to the right by the stone statues on the right side of the campus when we first entered the gate, but had walked to the left, then we would have encountered the internet-famous wall earlier.

This trip to the Xiangshan campus of the Academy of Fine Arts was very rewarding. The architectural styles are very different but integrated, and there are also various exhibition halls (we didn't visit the exhibition halls carefully because we were concerned about the Internet celebrity wall) that display some history and the works of teachers and students. It is rare to find such a secluded art campus in the crowded Hangzhou, and it is worth the trip.

As an art student, it is as important to me as Peking University and Tsinghua University. Art schools always have a strong artistic atmosphere. No matter where in this school, no matter how remote the landscape is, it has its own unique artistic atmosphere. The gray-green, red and blue pictures, the bright but not strong color contrast, make this place one of the locations for portrait photography. Even the huge ancient camphor tree outside the wall of the design museum was a factor that Siza considered when designing. The staff of the design museum said that this tree needs many people to hug it. It is said that it was planted here a long time ago, so Siza kept it here. The green trees and red walls look very harmonious and lively from a distance.

In fact, I was afraid that they would not let me in when I went in, but there was no obstruction. After I went in, I saw green everywhere, but there were very few people. It was not until I was halfway there that I realized that the children were on summer vacation. No wonder there were not many people. I wanted to see the scenes in "Running Man", but the first step was to the sculpture and the library. I liked the spacious feel of the school the most, and the classrooms felt like I was watching an exhibition. There was a beautiful library inside, but it was sealed due to the holiday. The tiles used on the houses are the retro black tiles with Jiangnan characteristics. They should look beautiful in photos when wearing light-colored clothes. The colors are simple and not abrupt.

I went there in the winter of 2013. The building is unique and next to the West Lake. It would be nice to go in and take a look if you have time.

The Academy of Fine Arts is located on Nanshan Road next to the West Lake. Although the campus is relatively small, the design is very beautiful. I went there in winter and didn’t get to take pictures of the lush green scenery, but I did get to see some golden ginkgo trees.
