East Lake

Donghu, a small lake in Linhai District, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, gets its name from its proximity to the eastern wall of Taizhou Prefecture. Donghu is quite small, measuring 500 meters from north to south and 150 meters from east to west. Qing Dynasty literati likened it to a "Little West Lake": "Hangzhou has West Lake, Taizhou has East Lake. The beauty of Donghu is this Little West Lake." All roads around Donghu are open, offering scenic views of the lake and water. Deeper into the lake, the scenery is truly remarkable, with pavilions, towering towers, flowing tiles, a forest of steles, a stage, a pavilion in the center of the lake, and the Nine-Curve Bridge, showcasing the beauty of Jiangnan gardens. Admission to the scenic area is 15 yuan, with half-price admission 7 yuan. Discounts are available when combined with the Jiangnan Great Wall ticket.

East Lake, excavated during the Northern Song Dynasty, was originally a naval anchorage and garrison. In 1071, the fourth year of the Northern Song Dynasty's Xining reign, it was dredged and expanded by Qian Xuan, the prefect of Taizhou, and subsequently converted into a garden. East Lake is divided into three major areas: the front lake, the center lake, and the back lake. The front lake area comprises Yishui Villa, Rongxing Hall, and the East Lake Stele Forest; the center lake area includes the Lake Heart Pavilion, Bangou Pavilion, Luo Linhai Shrine, Qiaoyun Pavilion, Fengyuan Pavilion, and the ruins of the Qiaofu Shrine; and the back lake area comprises Qishui Garden, Xiaojian Lake, and Haijiao Garden, presenting a typical Jiangnan garden style.

I originally thought that the lakes in Zhejiang should be similar. After entering, I was deeply impressed. The pavilions and terraces are arranged in a staggered manner, small but exquisite. I saw the statue of Luo Binwang, one of the Four Great Scholars of the Early Tang Dynasty. It turns out he was once a high official in Linhai. There's also a Qian Family Ancestral Hall in East Lake Park, which shows how popular the Qian family was in southern China.

Linhai East Lake is named after its proximity to the eastern side of the Taizhou city wall. Originally, East Lake was the confluence of Baiyun and Shangong Creeks in the north of the city, flowing south into the Lingjiang River. East Lake was excavated in the second year of the Duangong reign of the Northern Song Dynasty (989) and was originally a place for naval forces to anchor and station troops. In the fourth year of the Xining reign of the Northern Song Dynasty (1071), it was dredged and expanded by the prefect Qian Xuan, and subsequently expanded through successive generations. In the eighteenth year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1679) and the tenth year of the Tongzhi reign (1871), the prefects Bao Futai and Liu Wangao undertook two major dredgings, bringing it to its present size. Today, East Lake Park is awash with rippling green waters, with pavilions and terraces dotted around, islands suspended in the middle, bridges connected by embankments, and nine-curve railing bridges. The lake and mountains reflect each other, and the spring flowers and autumn moons are filled with fragrance. The beauty of East Lake was so remarkable that Yu Yue, a famous Qing Dynasty scholar, praised it in his "Spring in the Hall Essays" by saying, "Hangzhou has West Lake, Taizhou has East Lake, and the beauty of East Lake is even better than that of the Little West Lake." He also said: "Beautiful mountains and rivers, less than half a mile away from Dongguo, it is suitable for both sunny and rainy days, how can it compare with the first building in West Lake." Chengdu has two East Lake Parks, and this is one of them, located in Xinfan Town. Many Chengdu locals may not have been here. Xinfan Town is also a characteristic town mainly engaged in the furniture business, which reminds me of Likou in Suzhou.

Taizhou was the primary settlement of the renowned Wuyue Qian clan. During his tenure as governor, Qian Xuan made significant contributions, including the construction of the Taizhou prefectural capital and the opening of East Lake. East Lake, situated directly in front of the Jiangnan Great Wall, is a worthwhile addition to your itinerary, boasting pavilions, towers, lake views, and stunning mountain scenery. Within East Lake Park, the Luo Linhai Shrine commemorates Luo Binwang, author of the poem "The Goose" and the timeless "Shou Wu Xing Wen."

Taizhou's East Lake Greenway happens to share the same name as a recently constructed scenic spot in Wuhan. I didn't have high expectations at first, but I was ultimately captivated by its tranquility and natural beauty. The entrance offers very cheap single, double, and quad bikes (5 yuan per person), which is much cheaper than Wuhan, hahaha.

The scenery here is quite different from the bustling East Lake in Wuhan. Taizhou's East Lake also seems to have a Zen feel: egrets tread on the blue waves, reeds grow tall on the beach, an old man sails a small boat, and friends and family ride together... I wish time could stand still at this moment.

The East Lake, not far from the ancient Great Wall, is an artificial lake dug by the prefect Qian Xuan in the fourth year of Xining in the Northern Song Dynasty (1071). The lake houses the Huxin Pavilion, Qiaoyun Pavilion, Hushan Temple, and Zhongyi Temple. You can visit them before visiting the ancient Great Wall.

Nowadays, few northerners can ride horses, but southerners are still good at sailing boats. For someone who loves natural landscapes, East Lake is definitely a great place to go. The artificially mined stone walls, the cool water, the swaying black-sailed boats, and the gentle breeze are truly relaxing. We also climbed a small hill above East Lake, where there is a tea garden. From the top of the hill, you can see the entire East Lake and the wall that separates the inky black East Lake water from the green outer water.

Although the ticket price for Donghu Lake is not very high, it still feels like a sweet burden when you add the boat ticket. But you must take a black-sailed boat when you go to Donghu Lake, so that your life will be complete.

Tourists seeking entry are unconditionally required to purchase a ticket.
