Su Xiaoxiao's tomb

苏小小之墓

Su Xiaoxiao's tomb is located beside Xiling Bridge on West Lake in Hangzhou. She was the most famous courtesan in Qiantang during the Southern Qi Dynasty and one of the most famous talented and beautiful women in ancient China.
After several damages, the tomb pavilion was destroyed by the Red Guards in 1964, on the eve of the Cultural Revolution.
It was rebuilt in 2004 and carved from Taishun bluestone. It is supported by six square pillars and has become the tomb pavilion we see today.
Legend has it that Su Xiaoxiao was buried beside Xiling Bridge after her death. In front of her is a stone tablet inscribed with the words: "Tomb of Su Xiaoxiao of Qiantang." This tomb is a household name in Hangzhou.

Walking out of the Xiling Seal Society, you will reach the Xiling Bridge at the other end of Xiaogushan Mountain. On one side of the Xiling Bridge is Xiaogushan Mountain, and on the other side is the north bank of West Lake. At the bridgehead is the tomb of Su Xiaoxiao.

Su Xiaoxiao's Tomb, also known as the "Mucai Pavilion," was a courtesan during the Southern Qi Dynasty (479-502). She lived in Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang). Her beauty was unparalleled, her talent and skills were exceptional, and she was universally admired. She often rode in a chariot decorated with oil-painted walls and fragrant flowers. She died of hemoptysis at the age of 23 and was buried in Xiling Village. Later generations built the "Mucai Pavilion" over her tomb to provide shelter from the elements for mourners.

2020.10.7 The tomb of Su Xiaoxiao, a famous prostitute, is also on the bank of West Lake, next to Wu Song's tomb. An old man is talking about Su Xiaoxiao's story.

The most famous tomb among these is that of Su Xiaoxiao, located near Xiling Bridge. This talented woman fell in love with a nobleman from the capital, but he was recalled by his father and never heard from again. Su Xiaoxiao waited for him by Xiling Bridge, her unwavering love culminating in her death, filled with hatred. While the story inevitably adds a touch of romanticism, the story of the impoverished scholar offering his benefactor a helping hand, and the talented scholar, upon passing the imperial examination, burying him by Xiling Bridge with the inscription "Qiantang Su Xiaoxiao," is a well-documented event. Literati and scholars were inspired by this poignant love story, and Wen Tingyun composed the poem "Song of Su Xiaoxiao":

Don’t spend the coupon to buy lotus, and don’t spend the gold to buy wine.

The spring face in the wine carries the sorrow of separation, and the lotus seeds in the water carry the sweet heart.

The girls in the Wu Palace have waists as thin as belts, and their home is in Qiantang, Xiaojiangqu.

Ever since my lover followed the wind, the spring water in front of the door has been green every year.

Reading it now, one can still feel the longing and anticipation year after year.

Beside Xiling Bridge, in Mucai Pavilion; because the Southern Qi courtesan Su Xiaoxiao was buried beside Xiling Bridge in West Lake, Hangzhou after her death, a Su Xiaoxiao tomb was built.

Su Xiaoxiao, a renowned courtesan of Qiantang during the Southern Qi Dynasty (479-502), was known for her exceptional talent and beauty, with a poignant and moving life story and love story. Legend has it that she was buried beside Xiling Bridge after her death, and her descendants built the "Mocai Pavilion" (Mocai Pavilion) on her tomb. Numerous poems, novels, and operas have dedicated her to her throughout history. "Her fame endures through the ages, and the stories of the Six Dynasties are recorded in Xiling," she has become a legend of the West Lake region. Throughout history, Su Xiaoxiao's tomb has undergone several destructions and reconstructions. In 2004, the Hangzhou Municipal Government restored the tomb and pavilion. Prior to the restoration, the tomb underwent extensive review by experts and scholars. The restoration process was based on the opinions and design sketches of renowned Chinese garden experts such as Meng Zhaozhen, as well as on the surviving photographs of the pavilion, meticulously restoring the original appearance. The pavilion boasts 12 pillar couplets, each penned by a distinguished group of calligraphers, making it the pavilion with the most pillar couplets in the West Lake Scenic Area.

There is a tomb by the West Lake, it belongs to an ancient charming lady.

By The Count and the Maiden's Feast |

Su Xiaoxiao's tomb is located by the West Lake, a picturesque spot perfect for a talented geisha like her. The tomb is likely a cenotaph, but I wonder if it was damaged, otherwise even her clothes might be missing.

By Watching the clouds roll and unfold |

Spring water still flows eastward, spring flowers will eventually fall, whether it is legend or history, I just want to "live up to the spring":

Yesterday it was warm in spring, but today it is cold. The rain is misty, the fog is hazy, and the water beside the West Lake is hazy.

Xiling Seal Society, Xiling Bridge, the past is like smoke, the present is like clouds, and the spring flowers on the river bank are floating in the rain.

—By the Xiling Bridge, where is the oil-painted carriage now? Xiling Seal Society, descendants of a generation of masters discuss. So many events, past and present, let's not dwell on them! The spring river flows eastward, where I look down.

By Maomao |

Many scholars throughout the ages have praised Su Xiaoxiao, including Bai Juyi and Li He of the Tang Dynasty, Zhang Dai of the Ming Dynasty, and Cao Juren and Yu Qiuyu of modern times. Some writers consider Su Xiaoxiao the "Chinese version of La Dame aux Camélias."

By Knife and Pen Rice |

This was rebuilt in 2004 to restore the historical appearance of West Lake. There are neither oil-painted carriages nor blue horses. Apart from the couplets, everything else is just like this.

A small pavilion, a memorial to a famous prostitute

By September |

I used to think Su Xiaoxiao was Su Dongpo's sister, but later I made the distinction. Su Dongpo's sister was called Su Xiaomei, and Su Xiaoxiao was a famous prostitute! There is a pavilion on the side of the road. Anyway, there is nothing special. If you go to Gushan Road, you will see it.

By _Manny |

The famous Qiantang prostitute was said to be buried in Xiling. Later generations built the tomb here based on this "rumor".

By Persephone |

On the other side of Xiling Bridge, on the shores of West Lake, lies the Tomb of Su Xiaoxiao, also known as the Mucai Pavilion. Legend has it that during the Southern Song Dynasty, a beautiful and talented woman named Su Xiaoxiao lived in Qiantang. One day, she met the prime minister's son, Ruan Yu, at West Lake. They fell in love at first sight and secretly married. However, Ruan Yu's parents, officials in the capital, disapproved of the marriage and decided not to go.

Xiling Bridge is overgrown with weeds, but Su Xiaoxiao's tomb is still clearly visible, with the famous Baoshi Mountain behind it. The so-called "West Village Calling for the Ferry" and "Boats Heading to Xiling's Beautiful Place" in ancient poems and paintings all refer to this place.

By yellow |

Su Xiaoxiao's tomb is located right by Xiling Bridge, a circular tomb. Su Xiaoxiao was a talented singer who died of coughing up blood at the age of 23. I had read her biography before and came here out of admiration. I didn't take any photos, though, as I felt it was disrespectful to take photos in such a place.

By Chang Xiake |

"You may praise the willows of Suzhou, but the Qiantang River is even more beautiful than the girls in the imperial garden. If you understand the sentimental spirit, seek out Xiaoxiao, for the Su family lies deep within the green willows." This is a poem from the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi's "Willow Branch Lyrics," in which Su Xiaoxiao is mentioned. Even among the scenic spots within the West Lake Scenic Area, Su Xiaoxiao's tomb is highly renowned. "Born in Xiling, died in Xiling, buried in Xiling, to live up to my lifelong love of mountains and rivers" was Su Xiaoxiao's final wish. The incense burial site beside Xiling Bridge fulfills this beautiful wish while also adding to the beauty of West Lake's landscape.

The tomb of Su Xiaoxiao is a strange place. Su Xiaoxiao and Wu Song were two completely different people with very different personalities, yet they were buried as neighbors after their deaths. Fate is something that no one can predict. Although both were famous concubines, they were different from Li Xiangjun. Miss Li had national integrity, while Xiaoxiao had no touching deeds. Later generations praised her only by saying that she was "unparalleled in beauty, with extraordinary talent and skills. She was praised by everyone at the time. She often rode in a carriage with oil-painted walls and fragrant flowers. She died of hemoptysis at the age of 23 and was finally buried in Xiling Village." This was just praising her beauty.

By Colorful Rhapsody |

Small and beautiful attractions such as the Tomb of Su Xiaoxiao are interspersed among the trees, making you feel delighted and curious all the way, without the monotony and boredom of an ordinary walk.

By Jian Xu |

It is actually a small tomb. You can pass by it when you visit West Lake. If you go there, just consider it a visit. After all, it is quite famous.

By Yi Lai |

It's strange to say, Su Xiaoxiao and Wu Song are two completely different people with such different styles, but they were buried as neighbors after their death. No one can guess what fate is.

Although she was also a famous concubine, she was different from Li Xiangjun. Miss Li had national integrity, and the little girl did not have any touching deeds. Later generations only praised her by saying that "her beauty was unparalleled, her talents and skills were outstanding, and everyone at that time praised her for her beauty. She often rode in an oil-painted carriage, died of hemoptysis at the age of 23, and was finally buried in Xiling Valley." They were just praising her beauty.

It was destroyed, and the year is unknown. There was much debate about whether to renovate it later. In the end, it was rebuilt. Unexpectedly, its influence became increasingly greater. Things like success, like fate, are really hard to explain.

By Bruce Wei |

I passed by it several times, and the one I envied the most was Su Xiaoxiao. I just knew that Su Xiaoxiao’s tomb is here.

Su Xiaoxiao's tomb is located on the banks of Xiling Bridge in West Lake, Hangzhou. Su Xiaoxiao, a courtesan during the Southern Qi Dynasty (479-502), was known for her stunning beauty and exceptional talent, widely admired at the time. She often rode in a chariot decorated with oil-painted walls and fragrant flowers. She died of hemoptysis at the age of nineteen and was buried in Xiling Village. Later generations built the Mucai Pavilion over her tomb to provide shelter from the elements for mourners. This renowned courtesan of Qiantang, a place of deep regret, is a cause for deep sorrow. Many people gather around her tomb, touching and patting it, which seems quite disrespectful. It's located near Yue Fei's Tomb and Wu Song's Tomb, so it's worth a visit if you have time.

Su Xiaoxiao was a poet and singer. A talented woman of her time. She was chaste and self-disciplined. She wasn't a prostitute. Why are some comments bringing up brothels? I really don't understand.

Su Xiaoxiao wasn't a celebrity, but her story has left a tinge of color on West Lake. It's just that the sheer volume of people on West Lake doesn't reflect Su Xiaoxiao's melancholy.

By haojing |

It is a cenotaph, not a real tomb, just a tombstone and a pavilion.

By Arong_Fragrance |

Those who say the tomb is ugly, why not learn some history? Aren't the experts invited by the city government to examine and renovate it in the original style any more professional than you? Is it because everyone is renovating it in a fresh, clean style that appeals to everyone's tastes? I'm speechless.

By Lai Lai |

Located on the lakeside, towards Gushan Mountain from the Xiling Seal Society, the tomb of Su Xiaoxiao stands out from afar. Whenever I pass by, I stop by to pay my respects. This renowned courtesan of Qiantang, whose life story is so moving, passed down like legend to this day, has left a lasting impression on people. It's said that after her death, Su Xiaoxiao was buried near Xiling Bridge. Later generations built a pavilion on her tomb, and wrote numerous poems and essays in her honor. The current tomb was renovated in 2004, restoring the original, previously destroyed, foundation.

By A pair of small scissors |

The tomb of Su Xiaoxiao, a famous courtesan during the Southern Qi Dynasty and the most famous courtesan in Qiantang, is located next to the Broken Bridge. The original burial ground was a thatched lawn, which was also quite charming. The new layout really makes it look out of place and unattractive. The tomb of Wu Song, however, is quite well-built nearby. It's a shame.
