Callanan’s Pass

Question regarding OSV. We are renting a property next summer that is right on Callanan’s Pass right at the entrance (past the checkpoint). How can I get a OSV permit for that entrance that is for Orleans residents only. Essentially we are staying at an Orleans residence for the week. I find it crazy we can’t access this entrance that is literally outside our door. Any tips and tricks!?!?

Callanan’s Pass in Orleans is one of the most desirable OSV access points on Nauset Beach, but it is very tightly controlled. Even if your rental home sits directly on Callanan’s Pass, the regulations for driving on that specific entrance do not change for visitors. The “Orleans Residents Only” rule applies strictly to the vehicle permit itself—not to where you are staying.

This can understandably feel frustrating, especially when the gate is right outside your door. However, Orleans limits that access point to full-time residents and property owners to reduce congestion, protect dunes, and manage emergency access in a very narrow space.

Here is how the system works and what options you *do* have.

  • Staying in an Orleans rental does not qualify you as an Orleans resident. OSV permits for Callanan’s Pass are only issued to year-round Orleans residents or property owners whose vehicle is registered to an Orleans address.
  • Visitors—even those renting a home in Orleans—must use the main OSV entrance in Chatham (Nauset Beach South), because that is the public-access OSV gate for non-residents.
  • Your rental owner cannot “transfer” or “extend” their resident privileges. OSV access is tied to vehicle registration and residency documentation, not to home address or rental agreements.

Options and Tips to Work Around the Restriction

While you cannot use Callanan’s Pass as a visitor, you can still enjoy OSV access and Nauset Beach with a little planning.

  • Use the Nauset Beach South OSV entrance (Chatham Gate). This is the only available OSV access point for non-residents. You can drive north along the beach (conditions permitting) even if you cannot enter at Callanan’s Pass.
  • Purchase the standard Cape Cod National Seashore OSV permit (if required for the route during your visit). You’ll need tire pressure equipment, proper gear, and compliance with vehicle and beach rules.
  • Park and walk in from your rental if beach-driving exclusivity isn’t essential—many renters choose this option since Callanan’s Pass residences have extremely close shoreline access.

Additional Notes

The town of Orleans has repeatedly confirmed that the resident-only policy is strictly enforced at Callanan’s Pass, and rangers check permits at the entrance. Turnarounds are not allowed on the dune road, so they are extra strict about who can proceed through that checkpoint.

Although it may feel inconvenient, your best option is simply to plan your OSV outings from the Chatham entrance and enjoy Nauset Beach from there. The ride along the sand is still beautiful, and you can spend the rest of your beach time accessing the water directly from your rental.
