Driving to Durango in December
I’m planning a quick trip either week before or after Christmas for 4-5 days in Durango as a gift to my daughters.
My husband won’t be with us. Is it safe to travel the roads from Albuquerque airport to Durango in December?
I live in Louisiana and have no knowledge of driving in snow.
We could fly into Durango but the prices are more than double.
Recommendations?
I’m booking the train ride and will likely do a dog sledding day. Any recommendations toward that is greatly appreciated.
I know I’m doing this way last minute.
Driving from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Durango, Colorado in December can be challenging if you are not experienced with winter driving. The route is roughly 215 miles and takes about 4–5 hours under normal conditions, but winter weather can make the trip longer and more difficult. Snow, ice, and mountain passes are common, especially as you approach northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. If you have little to no experience driving in snow, it is generally not recommended to drive this route alone.
Some considerations if you are thinking about driving:
- The route includes high-elevation areas, such as the San Juan Mountains, which can experience heavy snowstorms and icy conditions in December.
- Winter tires or chains are required in certain conditions. Rental cars may not automatically come with these, so you would need to confirm with the rental agency.
- Weather can change rapidly, and road closures due to snow are possible.
- Driving alone in snowy conditions can be stressful and potentially dangerous for someone without winter driving experience.
Alternatives to driving yourself:
- Fly to Durango: Although more expensive, flying into Durango-La Plata County Airport eliminates the stress of winter driving. You could rent a car locally or use shuttles and taxis for nearby activities.
- Bus or shuttle services: Some services operate between Albuquerque and Durango, though availability around Christmas may be limited.
- Consider a guided tour: Some companies offer transfers or guided road trips that handle winter driving, which could be a safer option for your daughters and yourself.
Regarding activities once you arrive, Durango in December is wonderful for winter experiences:
- Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad: A scenic ride through snowy mountains. Check their winter schedule and holiday-themed trains around Christmas.
- Dog sledding: Local operators offer dog sled tours, often including short rides or full-day experiences. Booking early is important as slots fill quickly during the holiday season.
- Skiing and snowboarding: Purgatory Resort is nearby with beginner-friendly slopes if your daughters are interested in snow sports.
- Other winter activities: Snowshoeing, tubing, and local holiday events in downtown Durango can round out your trip.
In summary, if you have no snow-driving experience, flying into Durango is the safest and least stressful option, even if more costly. Driving from Albuquerque is possible with caution, proper equipment, and favorable weather, but it carries risk. Planning and booking activities like the train ride and dog sledding early will help ensure a memorable holiday experience for your daughters.
