Plus size women's aloha-wear
Can anyone recommend stores to shop that have good quality plus-size clothing for women, preferably with a bit of Hawaiian style but not loudly touristy? I am seriously plus-sized (4x above, 5x below) so I need generously-sized clothes.
Thanks in advance for all suggestions.
Finding plus-size clothing with a bit of Hawaiian flair that isn’t overly touristy can be a bit tricky, but there are definitely options around Honolulu that cater to more generous sizes and offer stylish, locally-inspired designs. Below are a few stores that could have what you’re looking for:
- Hilo Hattie: This is one of the best-known stores for Hawaiian clothing, and while it’s often associated with tourist-style items, they do have a variety of plus-size options with a more classic Hawaiian aesthetic. They carry dresses, tops, and skirts in larger sizes and often feature subtle floral and tropical prints, perfect for everyday wear without the heavy tourist vibe.
- Island Vintage Clothing: Located in the Ala Moana Center, Island Vintage Clothing offers Hawaiian-inspired styles with a more modern, sophisticated edge. While their selection of plus sizes isn’t as extensive as some others, they carry more timeless designs that blend well with casual island living. Their clothing is usually relaxed, with patterns that aren’t too loud, making them a good option for everyday wear.
- ABC Stores: While ABC Stores are often known for souvenirs, they also carry clothing that’s more stylish and less touristy than many other places. Look for their more refined aloha shirts, dresses, and wrap skirts in larger sizes. Many items are made from lightweight, breathable materials perfect for the island climate.
- Aloha Stadium Swap Meet: If you’re willing to do some digging, the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet is a fantastic place to find unique, locally made clothing. Many vendors offer custom Hawaiian-inspired pieces in plus sizes, from casual tops to dresses. These clothes are usually more laid-back and functional, offering a more authentic island vibe.
- Lane Bryant (Ala Moana Center): While not exclusively Hawaiian, Lane Bryant offers a wide range of plus-size options with a great selection of clothing that’s both stylish and comfortable. Some of their pieces feature subtle tropical prints, and their selection is generally versatile enough to incorporate island style without being too loud or overly touristy.
- Local Boutiques: Several local boutiques in Honolulu, especially around the Ward Village area or near Ala Moana, offer plus-size clothing in a more chic and understated Hawaiian style. Keep an eye out for shops that specialize in island-inspired fashions, where you can find pieces that offer the tropical look but are still elegant and wearable for everyday outings.
Additionally, if you’re comfortable with online shopping, there are brands like ModCloth or Torrid that offer plus-size Hawaiian-inspired clothing in sizes that range from 0-30. Many of their items have relaxed, island-style prints without the overwhelming touristy feel.
In terms of clothing styles, look for items that feature soft, flowy fabrics like cotton or rayon. Hawaiian prints in muted tones (instead of bright neon florals) are also a good option. Dresses, tunic tops, and sarongs can be great versatile pieces for layering or wearing casually in the tropical heat.
Good luck with your shopping, and I hope you find some beautiful pieces that make you feel comfortable and stylish on your trip to Hawaii!
