Need Detroit homes tours recommendations
I'm love homes tours and have gone to the Indian Village homes tours for years. I also used to do the Palmer Woods tour. I just discovered the University District tour which I also loved. I'm curious if there are other homes tours people recommend in Detroit?
If you enjoy Detroit home tours like Indian Village, Palmer Woods, and University District, you’re in luck—Detroit and the surrounding areas have several other neighborhoods and events that showcase historic and architecturally significant homes.
Neighborhood Home Tours
Many Detroit neighborhoods hold annual or occasional home tours, especially in historic districts. These tours often highlight restored homes, architectural details, and local history.
- East Ferry Avenue Historic District: Offers tours featuring early 20th-century architecture and beautifully restored interiors.
- Boston-Edison Historic District: One of Detroit’s largest historic districts, tours focus on grand early 1900s homes and notable architectural styles.
- Midtown/Brush Park Historic District: Tours often include Victorian-era homes, many restored after years of decline, along with stories of Detroit’s history.
Specialty or Seasonal Home Tours
Some organizations coordinate seasonal tours or themed events, often around holidays or historic preservation fundraising efforts.
- Detroit Historic Home Tour by the Detroit Historical Society: Usually features several neighborhoods each year and highlights unique architecture and interior design.
- Holiday Home Tours: Several neighborhoods, including Indian Village and Palmer Woods, offer special tours during the holiday season, showcasing decorations and festive interiors.
- Architectural Foundation Events: Occasionally hosts tours of notable Detroit homes not included in standard neighborhood tours.
Tips for Finding Upcoming Tours
- Follow local preservation groups such as the Detroit Historic District Commission or the Detroit Historic Society—they often announce annual home tours.
- Check neighborhood association websites for smaller, community-focused tours that may not be heavily advertised.
- Subscribe to newsletters or social media pages of Detroit architecture or historic preservation organizations for updates on one-time or specialty tours.
With so many neighborhoods rich in history, you’ll find plenty of tours to enjoy beyond the ones you already love. Each offers a slightly different perspective on Detroit’s architectural heritage and local stories.
