Weekend between Christmas & New Year's

We will be staying in Boothbay this weekend, Saturday til Monday, between Christmas and New Year's . We are coming for Gardens Aglow, and plan to check out the decorations in Boothbay Harbor. I would love any other suggestions for must-see/dos. We have been to the area in the summer, but never in the winter. Thanks in advance!

Boothbay Harbor is a charming place to visit, especially between Christmas and New Year's, with its festive atmosphere and scenic winter beauty. While Gardens Aglow will definitely be a highlight, there are several other great activities and sights you can explore during your weekend stay. Here are a few suggestions to make the most of your time:

### 1. Explore Boothbay Harbor's Christmas Lights and Decorations

As you've mentioned, you plan to check out the holiday decorations in Boothbay Harbor, which is a must-see. The small town looks magical with its holiday lights, and many local businesses decorate their storefronts. Walking through the downtown area at night will give you a cozy, festive vibe. Don't forget to visit the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library and surrounding areas for some great photo opportunities!

### 2. Visit the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (Gardens Aglow)

Since you're already planning to visit Gardens Aglow, be sure to take your time exploring the 14 acres of stunning gardens lit up with thousands of twinkling lights. It's an unforgettable winter experience, and there are also a variety of indoor exhibits and a lovely gift shop to browse. The event runs through the end of December, so it’s a perfect choice for a winter visit.

### 3. Take a Scenic Winter Boat Tour

Although it might be too cold for a summer boat ride, there are still winter boat tours offered in the Boothbay Harbor area. Companies like Boothbay Harbor Shipyard offer private charters or scenic tours of the harbor. The winter views of the coast, especially with a light dusting of snow, can be incredibly peaceful. Just be sure to check ahead of time, as weather can affect availability.

### 4. Cozy up at a Local Cafe or Restaurant

There’s nothing like warming up by the fire at one of Boothbay Harbor’s cozy cafes or restaurants. Some great options to consider:

  • Boat House Bistro – A casual and cozy spot with great views of the harbor and delicious food, perfect for a winter meal.
  • Shannon's Unshelled – A warm, inviting restaurant with seafood and comfort food options.
  • Harbor View Café – Offers fantastic soups and baked goods, great for warming up after an afternoon stroll.

### 5. Take a Hike at the Boothbay Region Land Trust

If you're up for a little outdoor adventure, consider hiking one of the Boothbay Region Land Trust trails. Some of the trails may be a bit icy or snow-covered, so make sure you wear proper footwear. The trails offer beautiful winter views of the harbor and surrounding forest. A few popular trails to explore include the Linekin Bay Preserve or the Robinson’s Woods Trail.

### 6. Visit the Maine State Aquarium

Although winter may not be the peak season for aquariums, the Maine State Aquarium is still worth a stop if you're interested in learning about the region's marine life. The aquarium has exhibits focused on local species and sea creatures, and it's a relaxing place to visit if you want a break from the cold outside.

### 7. Explore Wiscasset

If you're looking to take a short day trip, Wiscasset is just a short drive from Boothbay Harbor and offers a picturesque village with unique shops, antique stores, and art galleries. It's a lovely spot to spend a few hours strolling around, and there are great places to eat, like Red's Eats, known for its lobster rolls.

### 8. Enjoy Winter Wildlife Watching

Winter is a great time to spot local wildlife in the area. If you're interested in birdwatching, Boothbay Harbor is home to many species of winter birds, and you might spot seals or other marine life along the shorelines. The region is peaceful and quiet in the winter, which makes it ideal for nature enthusiasts looking to enjoy the outdoors without the crowds.

### 9. Relax and Unwind

Finally, take some time to simply relax in Boothbay Harbor. Whether you're curling up with a book in front of a fireplace at your hotel or enjoying the quiet beauty of the harbor during the winter months, it’s a great opportunity to unwind and enjoy the slower pace of life.

With its picturesque views, cozy atmosphere, and festive holiday spirit, Boothbay Harbor is a wonderful place to visit in the winter. You’ll have no trouble finding activities to enjoy and making lasting memories with your family!
