Chiricahua to Guadalupe to Santa Fe

We're in very preliminary planning for late April trip as follows:

Fly Boston to Tucson.

Drive to Willcox for 2-3 day stay exploring Chiricahua National Monument

Drive to Guadalupe Mountains in Texas. Hike and explore 1-2 days.

Ultimately arrive in Santa Fe for stay with relatives.

We are older but enthusiastic hikers who love to be outdoors in the southwest.

(Last year we hiked all over Sedona before heading to Santa Fe if this helps).

I am open to any suggestions. As I say-this is just a 'why not' sort of itinerary.

Many thanks.

Your plan for a southern Arizona road trip is well-structured and makes good use of your time. Staying in Phoenix/Scottsdale for 1–2 nights first allows easy access to the Mesa Market Place Swap Meet and the Apache Trail, while Tucson as a base for 3–4 nights efficiently covers the southern towns and desert attractions without excessive driving.

Key points to consider:

  • Old Town Scottsdale or nearby Tempe are ideal bases for Phoenix-area activities, providing a mix of restaurants, shopping, and quick access to the Apache Trail.
  • Tucson, especially near the Catalina Foothills or the eastern/northern side of the city, offers a desert setting with mountain views, making it a scenic and convenient hub for day trips to Tubac, Tombstone, Bisbee, Saguaro National Park, and Old Tucson Studios.
  • Driving times are reasonable, but allow extra time for scenic stops and occasional spring traffic. Winter and early spring roads are typically safe, but keep an eye on weather for any sudden rain or wind.

Accommodation suggestions:

  • Hampton Inn, Best Western Plus, or similar chain hotels are reliable and comfortable for your group.
  • Desert-view or mountain-view hotels in Tucson or Scottsdale add to the experience without significantly increasing cost.
  • Book as soon as possible for March, even if it’s a last-minute trip, to secure rooms near your preferred locations.

Overall itinerary distribution:

  • Phoenix/Scottsdale: 1–2 nights for the Swap Meet and Apache Trail.
  • Tucson: 3–4 nights for Sonoran Desert exploration, Old Tucson, Gaslight Theatre, Tubac, Tombstone, and Bisbee.
  • Optional final night in Phoenix if needed for an early flight or additional Swap Meet visit.

This approach minimizes backtracking, balances sightseeing with driving, and ensures your group can enjoy the desert scenery and attractions comfortably.
