Hi there,
I’m planning of staying in Nantucket for the weekend with my family 4 adults, a 2 years old grandson & my chihuahua.
We are celebrating my birthday and would love to know if it is a good time to visit. Could you please let me know if shops and restaurants will be open? Also, are there any local activities, wine tastings, or festivals happening during our visit? Will the ferry still open to get there?
Looking forward to hearing some advice.
Regards,
Vivian
Visiting Nantucket in the second weekend of October can be a lovely experience! While Nantucket does start to quiet down a bit after the summer season, it’s still an enjoyable destination for a family celebration. The weather can be a bit cooler, so be sure to pack accordingly, but the island is known for its beauty in the fall with fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Shops and restaurants will generally be open, but you may notice some of the smaller, seasonal businesses begin to close after Columbus Day. However, many of the popular restaurants and boutiques in the downtown area remain open throughout October. This time of year can also be great for finding seasonal promotions or sales in the shops.
As for activities, the second weekend of October is a great time to enjoy some of the local fall offerings, including:
As for getting to the island, the ferry service to Nantucket operates year-round, so the ferry will be available during your visit. However, be sure to check the ferry schedules in advance, as service times may vary slightly in the off-season, and some ferry routes may have reduced availability. It’s always a good idea to book tickets in advance, especially if you're traveling with a group and a pet.
Since you’ll be traveling with a toddler and a chihuahua, Nantucket is very pet-friendly, and many outdoor areas, including beaches and walking trails, are perfect for both kids and pets. There are also several pet-friendly accommodations, but it’s best to confirm directly with any lodging to ensure they can accommodate your dog.
Overall, the second weekend of October is a peaceful time to visit Nantucket. While the island may be quieter than in peak summer, it offers a great chance to enjoy the fall colors, local food, and laid-back atmosphere, all while avoiding the crowds of the high season. Enjoy your birthday trip!
