Outer clothing and bag rules

I just bought a clear backpack but I'm wondering if you can bring outer clothing that doesn’t fit in the bag. Or can you wear multiple layers as you go through security?

Good question. For the Indian Wells Tennis Garden (which applies to events like the BNP Paribas Open), the clear bag policy is pretty strict—but when it comes to outer clothing (jackets, coats, etc.), you usually have some flexibility.

Here’s what the official policy says, plus some practical advice:

  • The venue allows one clear bag per guest. The acceptable bag types are:
    • A clear plastic, vinyl, or EVA bag no larger than 12″ × 6″ × 12″.
    • Or a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (like a Ziploc).
  • In addition to that clear bag, you’re also allowed a small clutch or purse (max ~4.5″ × 6.5″) with or without a strap.
  • As for outerwear (jackets, sweaters, blankets, etc.), these are typically allowed even if they don’t fit in your clear bag. Many similar venue policies let you carry these items over your shoulder or wear them through security.

Tips and things to keep in mind:

  • Be prepared to have your coat or jacket opened and inspected by security. If it’s bulky, they might ask you to fold it or wear it instead of stuffing it in your bag.
  • If you're bringing a jacket because of temperature changes (like cooler evenings), wearing it through security is usually the easiest way rather than trying to cram it inside your backpack.
  • Use the venue lockers if available: Indian Wells has storage lockers inside and outside the grounds. That way, if you don’t want to carry a bulky layer all day, you can stash it safely.

Bottom line: Yes — you can absolutely bring outer clothing that doesn’t fit inside your clear backpack. Security typically allows jackets and similar items as long as they don’t conceal anything suspicious, and they’re subject to inspection. Just be sure to follow the bag size rules for your main bag, and consider using lockers if needed.
