Fishing
Hi
We will be driving from San Francisco to San Diego in a few weeks taking in Monterey, Pismo on route. My son would like to go fishing- does anyone know if there are likely to be any trips running in any of these locations?
We have most time in San Diego at the end of the trip.
Thanks
Driving down the California coast from San Francisco to San Diego offers several great opportunities for fishing along the way, both for shore and boat trips. Depending on your schedule, you can plan stops in Monterey, Pismo Beach, and San Diego, each offering unique fishing experiences.
Monterey Area:
- Monterey Bay is known for both deep-sea and nearshore fishing. You can find half-day and full-day charter trips departing from Monterey Harbor or Moss Landing.
- Target species often include rockfish, halibut, lingcod, and sometimes salmon depending on the season.
- If you prefer something shorter, there are also pier fishing options at locations like Municipal Wharf or Lovers Point.
Pismo Beach / San Luis Obispo Coast:
- Pismo Beach offers both pier and surf fishing, which can be ideal if you don’t want a full-day charter.
- Charter trips are available from Avila Beach or Port San Luis for offshore fishing, targeting rockfish, halibut, and sometimes yellowtail.
- For a casual experience, consider shore fishing near the Pismo Pier or nearby jetties.
San Diego:
- San Diego is a fishing hotspot with plenty of options. Point Loma and Shelter Island are main departure points for sportfishing charters.
- Day trips range from 4 to 8 hours and target species like yellowtail, tuna, calico bass, halibut, and more.
- There are also family-friendly trips available that cater to beginners and kids, with gear and bait often provided.
- If you prefer casual or shore fishing, try Mission Bay or Ocean Beach Pier for easy access.
Tips for planning:
- Book charters in advance, especially in popular destinations like Monterey and San Diego.
- Check local regulations and whether a California fishing license is required for each location. Many charters include licenses for guests.
- Weather can affect trips along the coast; plan flexibility in your itinerary in case of cancellations due to rough seas.
Overall, your son should have plenty of opportunities for memorable fishing experiences on this coastal road trip, with San Diego offering the most variety and options if you want to end your trip with a full day of sportfishing.
