1st time in Maine

Hi there, I'm from Houston and I would like to visit Maine with just my Yorkie and myself. I'm 63 and a widow and would like a relaxing, beautiful stay with fabulous lobster at a good price. Where would you recommend I go? I'm flying in and if need be I'll rent a car. So maybe someplace with easy daytrips as well. Thank you ❤️

Hi there! Maine is a wonderful destination for a relaxing getaway, especially with your Yorkie. It offers beautiful coastlines, charming small towns, and a wealth of natural beauty. Since you mentioned you're looking for a mix of relaxation, scenic day trips, and fabulous lobster at a good price, I have a few recommendations for you. Here are some great places in Maine that would suit your needs:

1. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park

Bar Harbor is a quintessential Maine destination. It offers a beautiful harbor, quaint streets lined with shops and cafes, and easy access to Acadia National Park, one of the most stunning national parks in the U.S. There are plenty of pet-friendly accommodations, including cottages and small inns, where your Yorkie will be welcome. In addition, Acadia has several easy hikes, scenic drives, and viewpoints where you can enjoy the natural beauty at your own pace.

  • Lobster: Bar Harbor has numerous seafood restaurants where you can enjoy fresh lobster at a reasonable price. Try restaurants like Thurston's Lobster Pound for a great lobster experience.
  • Daytrips: Explore the town of Northeast Harbor, or take a scenic drive along the Park Loop Road in Acadia for some stunning coastal views.

2. Camden

Camden is another great option. This picturesque town, located on the Mid-Coast, is known for its scenic harbor, small-town charm, and stunning views of Camden Hills State Park. It’s an easy place to walk around and explore, with a variety of pet-friendly parks and outdoor spaces. Camden has a laid-back vibe that would be perfect for a solo traveler looking for peace and tranquility.

  • Lobster: You can find great lobster at Long Grain or Camden Deli, both offering delicious Maine lobster at good prices.
  • Daytrips: Take a trip to nearby Rockport for more beautiful views, or explore the charming town of Lincolnville and its beaches.

3. Ogunquit

If you're looking for a more beachy vibe, Ogunquit is a lovely coastal town known for its scenic coastline, beautiful beaches, and friendly atmosphere. Ogunquit has a relaxed pace, with easy walking paths like the Marginal Way, which offers stunning ocean views. There are plenty of places that will welcome both you and your dog, making it a perfect spot for a solo trip with your Yorkie.

  • Lobster: Head to Barnacle Billy's or The Lobster Shack for a great lobster meal right by the water.
  • Daytrips: Ogunquit is close to other picturesque towns like Kennebunkport and York, both of which offer more coastal beauty and plenty of local shops to explore.

4. Portland

If you prefer a slightly more urban setting with easy access to nature, Portland might be the place for you. It’s a lovely small city with a strong arts scene, great food, and a vibrant waterfront. It also has a number of pet-friendly accommodations and plenty of places to walk your dog along the waterfront or in one of the many parks.

5. General Tips

  • Weather: September is a fantastic time to visit Maine, as the weather is still warm but not too hot. Plus, you'll be able to catch the early stages of fall foliage, which will add extra beauty to your trip.
  • Car Rental: While some areas like Bar Harbor and Portland have great public transport options, renting a car will give you the most flexibility for day trips. Most areas in Maine are pretty accessible by car, and you’ll appreciate the ability to explore at your own pace.
  • Dog-Friendly Accommodations: Maine is known for being very dog-friendly, so most places will welcome your Yorkie. Just make sure to check the pet policy of each hotel or inn you’re considering.
