Private day tour of Yosemite from Oakhurst

Hi all. We are a group of 5, (maybe 6) adults in our 60's travelling to SF for a few nights and then driving to Oakhurst to see Yosemite NP for 3 days. We will have a NP pass, since we are going to Muir Woods while in SF, and we understand that we also would need parking reservations in both Muir and Yosemite (which we do plan on taking ourselves into at least once). However, we are interested in at least one private full day tour of Yosemite to get in all the highlights and get the lay of the land, so to speak.

Any recommendations? We are in okay enough shape to do some easy hiking and my priority is Mariposa Grove, but we still want to see and do as much as possible in the park while there. We are East Coasters and don't get out West often at all, so this is probably a one and done.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Visiting Yosemite for the first time from Oakhurst is a fantastic opportunity, and arranging at least one private full-day tour is a great way to see the highlights efficiently without the stress of navigating the park on your own. Since your group is in generally good shape but prefers easy hiking, you can plan a mix of scenic stops and short walks.

For a private day tour, consider hiring a local guide company based in Oakhurst or Yosemite that specializes in customized itineraries. Many guides offer full-day options that pick you up from your lodging in Oakhurst and return you in the evening.

Suggested itinerary highlights for a private day tour:

  • Mariposa Grove: Start your day here early if possible to avoid crowds. You can take the easy Grizzly Giant Loop (2 miles) to see the iconic sequoias. Some tours include transportation to the Grove, which is helpful since parking can be limited.
  • Tunnel View: Stop for the classic panorama of El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome. A short walk from the parking lot allows you to take photos and enjoy the view.
  • Yosemite Valley Highlights: Glide through stops like El Capitan Meadow, Cook’s Meadow, and Swinging Bridge. Most guides time these stops for short walks to viewpoints without tiring the group.
  • Bridalveil Fall: An easy half-mile round-trip walk to the base of the waterfall, perfect for a light hike and photos.
  • Optional Short Hikes: Depending on your energy, you could do the Lower Yosemite Fall Trail (1 mile round trip) or a portion of the Mirror Lake Loop for peaceful lake reflections and Half Dome views.

Additional tips:

  • Hire a guide who provides transportation inside the park, which alleviates stress with parking and shuttle reservations.
  • Make sure your guide customizes the day according to your priorities, especially Mariposa Grove and the valley viewpoints.
  • Bring snacks, water, and layers, as temperatures can vary between the valley and higher elevations.
  • Early morning or late afternoon departures are ideal to avoid midday heat and crowds.

Recommended guide companies based in Oakhurst or Yosemite area often have small private vans or SUVs and are experienced with first-time visitors. You can also ask for guides who incorporate interpretive talks about the park’s history, geology, and wildlife.

With one private day tour, you can comfortably hit all the must-see highlights, leaving the rest of your stay in Yosemite to explore at your own pace, do shorter hikes, or just enjoy the scenic surroundings from your lodging.
