Whittier before train to Anchorage

We will be disembarking our cruise in Whittier around 8 am and are planning on taking the train to Anchorage that evening at 6:45 pm. I'm looking into things to do that day and wanted some insight. Two of us are interested in taking the train south to Spencer Whistle Stop and doing the paddling/hiking that is offered through the Alaska Railroad. The other 3 would rather stay in Whittier and do some fishing. Am I right in thinking that those of us going to Spencer would take the same train back to Whittier that would pick up the 3 that stay behind before continuing on to Anchorage? Does this plan sound doable?

Your plan for spending the day in Whittier before taking the evening train to Anchorage is definitely doable, but there are a few details to keep in mind to make it smooth and enjoyable.

Spencer Whistle Stop Excursion:

The Alaska Railroad offers a day-use stop at Spencer Glacier (sometimes called Spencer Whistle Stop) where guests can do short hikes and paddling activities. For your plan:

  • The train to Spencer Glacier will depart from Whittier and is typically a round-trip service for day-use passengers. Those going to Spencer will disembark for the activities and then reboard the same train to return to Whittier before the train continues to Anchorage.
  • The timing works well if your train to Anchorage is in the evening at 6:45 pm. You’ll have a few hours at Spencer for the hiking/paddling, and you can coordinate with the railroad for the pickup back to Whittier.
  • Be sure to reserve your spots in advance, as these side excursions are limited and often fill quickly during summer.

Fishing in Whittier:

  • Whittier is a small town, but it has good options for guided or self-guided fishing for salmon and halibut in nearby waters. Depending on your group’s experience, a short half-day fishing charter is recommended to make sure you’re back in time to meet the train.
  • If you go independently, plan your schedule carefully since ferries and small boats can take extra time. Guided charters often provide gear and know the best spots, maximizing your limited time.

Coordination & Logistics:

  • Yes, the group going to Spencer Glacier and the group staying in Whittier can use the same train back to Whittier before heading to Anchorage. Just confirm with the Alaska Railroad staff when you board in the morning so they know your group split and pickup points.
  • Bring snacks, water, and appropriate layers for weather — even in summer it can be chilly or rainy near the glacier and along the coast.
  • It’s a long day, but with careful planning, both groups can have a full experience — glacier hiking/paddling for some, and a relaxing fishing experience for others.

In summary, your plan is feasible. Book the Spencer Glacier side trip early, communicate clearly with the railroad about your timing and group split, and for the fishing group, consider a guided charter to maximize efficiency. This will let everyone enjoy a memorable Alaskan day before boarding the train to Anchorage in the evening.
