Short stop between DC and Orlando in August
Hi, I am travelling to the US from England in August, and we will be spending a few days in Washington DC before travelling down to Orlando for a week. We would like to stop somewhere else for a couple of days en route, but I am struggling to decide where. I have two children (13 and 16), one who is interested in cities, history etc and the other who is interested in beaches and more active things. I have considered Richmond (would get train from DC then fly to Orlando), Charleston and Savannah but don't know much about any of them and would welcome thoughts and other suggestions. I know we would need to do at least one flight, but if we could do one of the legs by train that would be a bonus but not essential. I am also aware it will be very hot in August so anywhere that is better for sightseeing in summer temperatures is also helpful!
All suggestions gratefully received, thanks. And sorry if this isn't the best forum, I wasn't sure where best to post.
For a short stop between Washington DC and Orlando in August with kids aged 13 and 16, balancing historical/cultural interests and beach/active options can be a bit tricky, especially considering the hot summer weather. Here are some well-suited options along the East Coast that provide a mix of history, activities, and potential for relaxation:
One thing to consider is the mode of travel. Taking a train from DC can be scenic and relaxing for part of the journey, while flying from the stopover city to Orlando can save time, especially with summer heat.
- Richmond, Virginia: A smaller city than DC, but rich in Civil War history, museums, and the Virginia State Capitol. Good for history buffs and city exploration. Active options include the James River for kayaking and outdoor adventures. You can reach Richmond easily by train from DC (about 2 hours), then fly from Richmond to Orlando.
- Charleston, South Carolina: Beautiful historic city with cobblestone streets, plantations, and a waterfront area. Offers history tours, museums, and carriage rides. For your child who likes beaches and active things, nearby Folly Beach or Isle of Palms are great spots. Charleston is very warm in August, so plan for outdoor activities in the mornings or late afternoons.
- Savannah, Georgia: Another historic southern city with a charming downtown, squares, and riverfront. Ghost tours, historic homes, and trolley tours are appealing to city/history lovers. Tybee Island is nearby for beaches and water activities. Like Charleston, summer heat can be intense, so plan accordingly.
- Outer Banks, North Carolina: If your family is willing to venture a little further east, the Outer Banks offers a mix of history (lighthouses, Wright Brothers National Memorial) and great beaches. Ideal for a more relaxed, nature-oriented stop.
- Virginia Beach, Virginia: Offers a long boardwalk, beaches, and some museums. Combines beach time and family-friendly activities, but less historic charm than Charleston or Savannah.
Other considerations:
- Book accommodations with air-conditioning, as August temperatures can be in the 30s°C (mid-80s to 90s°F) with high humidity. Afternoon sightseeing may be challenging.
- Early morning and evening excursions are often more comfortable. Indoor museums and attractions can be a nice respite from the heat.
- Flight options from Charleston, Savannah, or Richmond to Orlando are plentiful, making them convenient for a short stop.
- If train travel is important, Richmond is the most convenient from DC, but the city has fewer beach options compared to Charleston or Savannah.
Overall, Charleston or Savannah would likely offer the best combination of historic charm, cultural experiences, and nearby beach opportunities. Richmond works best if you want a short train ride from DC and a more city-focused stop without venturing too far.
