Haleakela Zipline time vs winds

I'll be going to Maui with my husband, son, and sister in mid-June and it's looking like we're going to have a lot of wind, especially in the afternoon.

We're going to do the Haleakela zipline some time during our stay and I'm wondering what the best time to go is.

I do get a little nervous ziplining (I've done it a bunch of times and it wears off after the first one or two lines), so I don't want to go when it'll be crazy windy.

Should we book the 9:30 time to avoid the winds? There's also 11:30, 12:30, 2:30, and 3:30. Are the winds pretty strong on the mountain?

Thanks all!

Visiting Haleakalā for ziplining in mid-June is a fantastic plan, and your concern about the winds is valid. The summit area of Haleakalā is very exposed, and wind conditions can vary significantly throughout the day. In general, mornings tend to be calmer, while afternoons often bring stronger winds due to thermal currents and the trade wind pattern over Maui.

Based on local knowledge and reports from zipline operators on Haleakalā:

  • Morning slots (around 8:30–10:00 AM): These are usually the calmest times for ziplining. The winds are generally lighter, temperatures are cooler, and the experience is more comfortable for nervous zipliners.
  • Late morning to early afternoon (11:30–12:30 PM): Winds can start picking up, especially on the higher lines. While still manageable, gusts may be noticeable and can add to the intensity of the ride.
  • Afternoon (2:30–3:30 PM): This is when winds are most likely to be stronger. Some lines may be temporarily closed if gusts are significant, and it can feel more turbulent during the ride.

Additional tips for your zipline experience:

  • Book the earliest available time (e.g., 9:30 AM) to minimize wind exposure and take advantage of calmer conditions.
  • Dress in layers; it can be chilly and windy even in summer mornings at higher elevation.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes and secure any loose items, especially glasses or hats, as wind gusts can be stronger at the summit.
  • Check with the operator the day before or the morning of your tour. They monitor conditions closely and may adjust start times or close lines if winds are unsafe.

In summary, yes — booking a 9:30 AM time is recommended to avoid the strongest winds and have the most enjoyable experience, especially for someone who gets a little nervous initially. Mid-morning or later times carry a higher likelihood of gusty winds that can make the zipline feel more intense.
