Things to do

Hi

We’ve spent a few days for the past two summers in CB and love it and plan to come again in late July for 2:days. Looking for something different for my 16 year old son to do. He did downhill biking one time and we have done a little bit of hiking. I’d love suggestions on other activities that might be fun. Also any hikes to recommend on Cottonwood Pass? Thanks!

Crested Butte in late July offers a wonderful mix of outdoor activities beyond downhill biking and hiking, especially for a 16-year-old looking for adventure and fun. Since you’ve already experienced some hiking and biking, here are several suggestions to add variety to your trip.

Activities for your son (and family-friendly options):

  • Mountain Biking Adventures: If he enjoyed downhill biking before, consider trying some of the cross-country trails around Crested Butte or guided freeride tours tailored for teens. Crested Butte is often called the “Mountain Biking Capital of Colorado.”
  • Kayaking or Paddleboarding: The nearby Gunnison River or nearby lakes like Meridian Lake or Oh Be Joyful Reservoir offer rental opportunities and beginner-friendly paddling experiences.
  • Ziplining: Several outfitters offer zipline tours in the surrounding mountains which can be exciting for teenagers.
  • Rock Climbing or Via Ferrata: For a new challenge, some companies offer guided climbing trips or via ferrata experiences suitable for teens with minimal experience.
  • Horseback Riding: Guided trail rides offer scenic views of the valley and mountains, a slower-paced but memorable activity.
  • Adventure Parks / Mini-Golf: Crested Butte Mountain Resort has some summer adventure activities including alpine slides, climbing walls, and mini-golf, which are fun alternatives to hiking.

Hikes around Cottonwood Pass:

  • Cottonwood Lake Trail: A moderately easy hike with beautiful alpine lake scenery. Great for a shorter hike with rewarding views.
  • Scarp Ridge Trail: A more challenging option with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Good for teens who want a bit of a workout.
  • Cottonwood Pass Summit Area: Driving to the pass itself gives access to multiple trailheads; you can do short day hikes with spectacular wildflowers and vistas without committing to long climbs.
  • Snodgrass Mountain / Avalanche Lake: Offers moderate trails with high alpine scenery. The wildflowers are especially impressive in late July.

Other tips:

  • Check local outfitters for teen-oriented guided tours or rentals—they often have equipment and knowledge to make short adventures more fun.
  • Pack sunscreen, plenty of water, and layered clothing as mountain weather can change quickly.

With just two days, mixing one adventurous activity (like ziplining or kayaking) with a scenic hike on Cottonwood Pass is a great way to give your son variety and memorable experiences while still enjoying Crested Butte’s stunning summer scenery.
