Chicago in summer

Hi. It will be first time going to Chicago in July. Apologies if someone already asked but could use some input or recommendations as to where to stay with my 10 year old and hubs. We want to stay within walking distance of the millennium park and riverfront and short driving to beach and navy pier. We were looking into Hyatt regency, fairmont, swissotel, Sheraton, and possibly Royal sonesta. Please let me know which you recommend as far as beautiful views and great safe location.

Chicago in the summer is a fantastic experience! The city is vibrant, with lots of activities and beautiful views, especially around Millennium Park, the riverfront, and Navy Pier. Based on your criteria, here are some insights and recommendations for where to stay in the downtown area with great views, a safe location, and walking distance to the attractions you mentioned:

1. Hyatt Regency Chicago: The Hyatt Regency is centrally located, within walking distance to Millennium Park and the Riverwalk. It offers great views of the city, especially from higher floors, and is a very family-friendly hotel. The location is perfect for exploring the loop, and it’s also close to the Museum Campus. While the beach isn’t immediately next door, it's just a short drive away. This hotel is a solid choice if you're looking for convenience and good amenities. However, keep in mind it is a large property, so it can feel a bit busy.

2. Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park: The Fairmont is a beautiful, upscale hotel located right next to Millennium Park. It’s perfect for walking to the park, and it's also a short stroll to the riverfront and Lake Michigan. It offers great views of the park and the skyline, and it has a luxurious, family-friendly atmosphere. The location is safe and convenient, with lots of restaurants and shops nearby. The Fairmont also offers a kid-friendly vibe with a nice pool, which might be a bonus for your 10-year-old!

3. Swissotel Chicago: The Swissotel is another great option located along the riverfront, offering wonderful views of both the river and Lake Michigan. It’s a little further from Millennium Park compared to the other options, but still within walking distance (about 10 minutes). The Swissotel offers spacious rooms and a great location for those who want to be near the riverwalk and also be a short drive from Navy Pier and the beaches. It's a safe area and has easy access to public transportation as well.

4. Sheraton Grand Chicago: Located on the riverfront, the Sheraton Grand offers stunning views of both the river and the city skyline. It’s a short walk to Millennium Park and has easy access to Navy Pier and the lakefront. It’s also very family-friendly, with amenities like an outdoor pool and great dining options. The location is perfect for exploring the heart of the city while being close to the riverfront and nearby attractions like the Magnificent Mile.

5. Royal Sonesta Chicago: The Royal Sonesta is located near the riverwalk and offers a more boutique hotel experience. It’s a little further from Millennium Park but still within walking distance (about 15 minutes). The hotel has a nice vibe, and the location is safe, though not as central as the others in terms of proximity to the park and waterfront. The rooms here also have great views, particularly if you're on the higher floors. This option might appeal if you're looking for a more unique, less touristy experience while still being close to all the action.

Recommendation Summary:

  • If you want to be closest to Millennium Park and have a luxurious experience, Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park is your best bet.
  • If you’re looking for a hotel with a great riverfront location and easy access to Navy Pier and beaches, the Sheraton Grand Chicago or Swissotel would be great choices.
  • If you're looking for something a little more affordable but still close to everything, the Hyatt Regency is a good option.
  • If you prefer a smaller, more boutique hotel feel, the Royal Sonesta might be a great fit.

All these hotels are in safe, walkable areas, making them perfect for exploring Chicago's main attractions with your family. You’ll find that public transportation is easily accessible from these locations if you plan to visit more distant spots, and with your proximity to Millennium Park and the riverfront, you’ll be right in the heart of Chicago’s vibrant summer scene!
