Street Car

Hi all,

Are you allowed to bring a suitcase a little larger than a carry on but not the largest size suitcase, on the street car?

I won't be travelling during the busy time. Is there room at your seat or would you have to take up two seats?

The New Orleans streetcar system is operated by the RTA and is designed primarily for local commuters and tourists. Bringing luggage is allowed, but there are practical considerations based on size and passenger volume.

Luggage Guidelines:

  • There is no strict maximum size for a suitcase, but the streetcar is not designed as a luggage-friendly vehicle. A suitcase slightly larger than a standard carry-on is usually acceptable, especially outside of peak hours.
  • You should be able to store a medium-sized suitcase at your feet or in the aisle next to your seat, as long as it does not block the walkway or other passengers. You will not typically need to occupy a second seat unless the car is unusually crowded or the suitcase is particularly large.
  • Larger suitcases or multiple bags may cause difficulty, as the streetcars have narrow aisles and limited space between seats.

Tips for Traveling with Luggage on Streetcars:

  • Travel during off-peak hours to ensure there is room for your suitcase and to avoid congestion.
  • Position your suitcase near the end of the car or beside your seat, making sure it does not obstruct others boarding or exiting.
  • Keep your luggage manageable and avoid placing it in the aisle whenever possible for safety and courtesy.
  • If your suitcase is awkward or very heavy, consider using a taxi or rideshare for longer trips instead of the streetcar for convenience.

Overall, for a slightly larger-than-carry-on suitcase, you should be fine during non-busy times, and it will typically fit next to your seat without needing a second seat. Just be mindful of the aisle and other passengers when boarding and storing your bag.
