Card v cash
First time visiting Chicago
We have noticed while doing research that some bars & restaurants are stating cash only or an added charge for card payments
Is this the norm?
We have noticed quite a few European cities are going cash only but never seen it in America before
Just wondering how much cash to bring as we usually bring minimal cash and just use our credit card
In Chicago, the vast majority of restaurants, bars, and shops accept credit and debit cards. However, it is true that you may encounter a few “cash only” establishments or places that add a small surcharge for card payments. This is more common in smaller, independently owned bars, cafes, and casual restaurants rather than large chains.
Here’s what to expect:
- Cash Only Spots: Some small bars, dive bars, or food stalls may operate on a cash-only basis. This is typically to avoid credit card processing fees and is not extremely common, but it does exist.
- Card Surcharge: A few restaurants may charge a small fee for using a credit card, usually 2–3%. This is generally indicated on the menu. It is not the norm, and most places absorb the processing fee themselves.
- ATMs: ATMs are widely available if you find yourself in a cash-only spot. Keep in mind that some bars may have minimum cash-only purchase requirements (for example, $10–$15 for a drink).
Tips for handling cash vs. card in Chicago:
- Bring a small amount of cash for tips, small purchases, and any cash-only spots. $40–$60 per person for a few days is usually sufficient.
- Use credit/debit cards for most dining, shopping, and transportation—it’s safe, widely accepted, and convenient.
- Check menus or signs at entrances for “cash only” notices so you’re prepared.
- Tipping: Even at cash-only places, you can typically add a tip in cash. At card-accepting places, tipping on the card is standard.
In summary, Chicago is predominantly card-friendly, and you do not need to carry large amounts of cash. Bringing a moderate amount for small establishments or emergencies should be sufficient.
