rice terraces Yuanyang
Hi I plan to visit Yunnan in the spring or fall next year. I have visited the rice terraces in Guilin. Wondering if the terraces in Yuanyang are bigger than those in Guilin? What is the best way to travel from Junming to Yuanyang ?
The Yuanyang rice terraces in Yunnan are among the most famous and extensive terraces in China. They are located in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Compared to the rice terraces in Guilin, Yuanyang's terraces are larger in scale, more dramatic in elevation changes, and more intricate due to centuries of Hani people’s cultivation.
Some key differences between Yuanyang and Guilin terraces:
- Size and scale: Yuanyang terraces cover a larger area with thousands of terraced fields stretching over multiple villages, while Guilin’s Longji terraces are smaller and more compact.
- Height difference: Yuanyang terraces often have steeper gradients and rise higher along the mountain slopes, creating more striking panoramic views.
- Photography: Yuanyang is particularly famous for sunrise and sunset reflections in the flooded terraces, making it highly popular among photographers.
For traveling from Kunming to Yuanyang, there are several options depending on convenience and budget:
- By bus: There are direct long-distance buses from Kunming to Yuanyang. The journey typically takes 8–10 hours and can be long and winding, but it is the most economical way.
- By flight: The nearest airport is in Jianshui or Honghe; however, flight options are limited. Some travelers fly to a nearby city and then take a bus to Yuanyang.
- By train plus bus/car: You can take a train from Kunming to Jianshui, then take a local bus or hire a car to reach Yuanyang. This option breaks up the journey and can be more comfortable.
Additional tips:
- Plan to stay at least 2–3 nights in Yuanyang to explore the key villages and terraces, such as Duoyishu, Bada, and Laohuzui.
- Spring (March–May) is good for water-filled terraces, while fall (September–October) is harvest season, giving golden-colored terraces.
- Accommodation options are limited, so booking in advance is recommended during peak travel seasons.
In summary, Yuanyang offers a larger, more dramatic, and culturally rich terrace experience compared to Guilin. Early planning for transport and lodging will help make the trip smoother and more enjoyable.
